Calan Mai is the traditional Welsh celebration of the first day of summer in the Celtic calendar. Here at the Centre, we’re hugely proud of Wales’ folk music tradition and thought it would be great to celebrate Calan Mai with other artists who share our strong Celtic heritage. So we’ve invited Breton and Welsh musicians to the Centre for a whole day of live Celtic music. The evening, in partnership with the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, will feature Welsh musicians including singer and harpist Siân James, 5-piece group Calan and 50-strong folk music orchestra Y Glerorfa and their step dancers. Joining them will be Welsh singer-songwriter Lleuwen Steffan who, although born and raised in Wales, currently lives in Douarnenez in Brittany. In addition to this the traditional Breton

bagpipe band, Kevrenn Alré will perform Breton music and dances, and singer Nolwenn Korbell, who has recorded in Breton, Welsh, French and English, will also join the Breton line up. Two years ago Wales was the first country to be showcased at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany – the largest Celtic festival in the world. Each year thousands of artists come together to celebrate their rich musical heritage and the success of Wales’ involvement has led us to work with our friends in Brittany for the first time in creating a headline gig here at home.

Free music festival… During the 10 day festival, the harbour town of Lorient buzzes with music and performance and we wanted the Centre to have the same feel during Calan Mai so are holding our own mini festival. Come down and grab a coffee or a pint and from midday onwards you can hear the best from the Welsh music scene throughout the Centre, including Colorama, Heather Jones, Bethan Nia, Brigyn, Sibrydion and 9Bach. We really hope you can make it down to Cardiff Bay to celebrate Calan Mai with us; we can’t wait. Dathlu Calan Mai: An Interceltic Celebration is supported by Wales Arts International

Cuba produces some of the world’s finest ballet dancers. Renowned for their unparalleled honed, classical technique and impeccable style, Ballet Nacional de Cuba has a reputation for bringing classic ballets to life with characteristic Cuban passion. Making their debut at the Centre this May, this impressive company performs two appealing programmes choreographed by Artistic Director Alicia Alonso; Magia de la Danza and Giselle to live orchestral accompaniment by Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the Orchestra of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Magia de la Danza is an indulgent night out. It’s a spectacular showcase of extracts from seven of the company’s most famous classical ballets including The Nutcracker, Coppelia and Swan Lake. It’s a sure fire bet for ballet lovers and those trying ballet for the first time alike.

For the full effect of Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Giselle is a celebrated work in the company’s repertoire and is danced with all the vigour and passion they are famed for. This is an emotionally charged tale of a peasant girl who falls for a nobleman, which in the wake of tragedy, moves between the human and supernatural. In doing so it also brings audiences under its spell. Alicia Alonso, Artistic Director of Ballet Nacional de Cuba, will hold a Question and Answer session following the performance on Wednesday 5 May.

“It’s exhilarating, breath-taking stuff.” The Guardian

South America is the hottest thing in dance right now. Modern, sexy, edgy, fashionforward. These are all words frequently applied to this fantastic Brazilian company, led by one of the most successful female choreographers on the planet. Deborah Colker’s Cruel is all about the fine line between pain and pleasure. Cruel hints at the harsh brutality, egotism and manipulation hiding behind love and conventional beauty. Colker’s dancers fly across the stage at break-neck speed and a set of oversized furniture plays with our sense of scale and reality. Colker’s last show at the Centre, Knot, received an instantaneous standing ovation and we can’t wait for her return to Cardiff. danceconsortium.com Free post-show talk: Tue 11 May

“ The production is as slick and smooth as Sedaka’s voice” The Gazette The story of one of pop music’s greatest singer songwriters is brought to the stage. Follow the remarkable life of this Brooklyn taxi driver’s son through his years as a teenage idol in the innocent 1950s, the harder times of the 1960s and his return to the top of the charts in 1974 with Laughter in the Rain. Oh Carol, Breakin’ Up is Hard to Do, Solitaire, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, Calendar Girl, Little Devil, Stairway to Heaven and Amarillo are songs that bring great memories flooding back for everyone who remembers the originals. And what a wonderful introduction to these iconic hits for those who weren’t lucky enough to have been there the first time around. We know you’ll be fascinated by this inspirational true story of triumph against the odds.

Zemblanity

Until Now

Wondermart

Clowning goes back a long way – think of the court jesters and buffoons who entertained people way back when. That bouffonery is still around today – and Zemblanity is an ode to the artistry of dark clowning; delivered at a mind-blowing, adrenalin fuelled pace. The six young men that make up Zemblanity are skilled athletes as well as stupidly funny – so as an audience you are left in awe, while wetting yourself laughing at the same time. What more could a Blysh audience need?

Mimbre fuses acrobatics with theatre and dance, consisting of three female performers who tell their stories by creating imagery with their own bodies…the result is beautiful display of strength, agility, grace and skill. This is a dreamy production; the women’s strength and grace create a charming and innocent piece of acrobatic work showing off the mischievous humour of our three performers…

Wondermart takes a playful swipe at supermarket culture and consumerism by taking participants on 30 minute journey through an unassuming local supermarket. Wheeling through the aisles, following instructions from a headset you become immersed in a magical world in a familiar setting – an entirely different kind of trip to the shops than the one you’ll be used to… and the coolest thing? No-one knows you’re doing it.

Enough with the wintery weather. We’re ready to liberate ourselves from our snow boots, emerge from under our blankets and look forward to some summer fun.

16 Jul, 8pm, Tickets £8-£12* Audiences at the Centre’s first Blysh festival last year agreed we delivered on our promise to put some colour back in their cheeks. And we want Blysh to be a permanent fixture on the festival circuit – so it’s 2010 and Blysh is back. Blysh is a festival of carnival and vaudeville entertainment, packaging up the comic and cabaret, the bonkers and bizarre. There will be plenty of surprising goings-on in the Weston Studio – as well as free street arts and theatre performances in and around the Centre, for everyone to get involved in. Join us this July to drink up the sunshine… all that snow, a distant memory… Check the website for details of acts as they are confirmed or join our monthly e-news for regular updates. * The price you pay depends on the how popular the show is and how earlier on you book.

Cirkus Cirkör is a circus company from Sweden who combine technical, acrobatic brilliance with some of the most imaginative, absorbing storytelling on the circus scene today. Their show Inside Out leads you into the fantastical backstage world of a circus company – with all its bizarre, eccentric, otherworldly characters. It’s full of playful illusion, slight-of-hand magic tricks and trapeze as well as knife-edge balancing acts that keep the audience in a state of awe and amazement. This show also features the best act of juggling we have ever seen (if you think juggling is throwing three balls in the air think again). And their fantastic on-stage live band (Irya’s Playground) provides an atmospheric soundtrack.

But there’s also something else that makes this show so special. As the narrative draws you gently into a backstage world; without being conscious of it happening, you realise you’ve completely let yourself go, and have been swept out of the realms of reality into a weird and wonderful dream world – where magic really happens. It is like being thrown back into childhood where real life and fantasy are so marvellously blurred. Audiences leave this show younger than they went in, emotionally exhilarated and happy to have witnessed such beautiful theatre. Dance doesn’t get more soul stirring – or more accessible – than Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The company’s 30 dancers seduce their audiences with an energetic mix of verve, charm, athleticism and explosive energy. In their very first visit, they bring their most popular and critically acclaimed piece to the Centre. The equivalent of Swan Lake to Matthew Bourne, Revelations is the company’s great showstopper and has rapturous audiences on their feet whenever it is performed. It’s a glorious celebration of the rousing gospel, spiritual music and blues of 1930s Texas and Ailey’s great tribute to the black heritage in America. Music plays an important role in the company’s performances using jazz, blues and popular soul music soundtracks to accompany the work.

Suite Otis, with music by Otis Redding and Dancing Spirit, a tribute to their artistic director Judith Jamison, are perfect examples of this and leave the audience feeling truly uplifted. We think this is the perfect introduction to dance. There are lots of clips on YouTube including Revelations, which give a really good idea of the sheer joy guaranteed from this world-class company. Experience the full-on, primal power of Kodo, the world’s most celebrated Japanese drum ensemble. Two meanings are embedded in the name of Kodo. First, heartbeat: the primal, tender sound as heard in the womb. Second, children of the drum: reflecting Kodo’s intent to play their drums simply, with the heart of a child. Since exploding onto the world stage almost 30 years ago Kodo have travelled the globe, combining roof-raising power with extraordinary finesse to deliver a physical theatre performance like no other. Inspired by the powerful, natural beauty of their home on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan, they have fused traditional forms with fresh influences to create a new, unique sound.

Featuring 22 of ABBA’s greatest hits, the musical tells the story of a mother and daughter the night before the daughter’s wedding. Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny story of love, laughter and friendship has been delighting audiences around the world for over 10 years. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, Mamma Mia!’s tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek Island paradise.

The hugely successful English language International Tour has been seen by more than 3 million people in over 45 cities. More than 40 million people worldwide have had the time of their lives at the show so we thought it was about time Wales joined in the fun.
