For India, more than anything else, it is a grand opportunity to woo foreign capital flying out of China. India needs massive inflow of capital to create jobs and build smart cities according to Modi’s vision. Because of Yuan devaluation, America may postpone revising the Fed rates upwards. This interregnum period is the golden moment of India to capitalize on. Once America revises the Fed rates, foreign capital will start making their homeward journey. China was doing too many things together. First it was expanding capacity beyond its demand, setting the stage to be the manufacturing hub of the world. Then domestic demand fell and with it the output. Exports, too, fell. To make it worse, the foreign capital inflow began to plummet. When misfortunes come, they come in battalion. China was in the midst of engineering a shift from export-led growth to an expansion based on consumer spending – while simultaneously trying to deflate a property bubble. Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman described the decision as “the first bite of the cherry,” suggesting more could follow. Wait and watch!

Australia, Brazil, Russia, Chile and Korea are expected to be directly affected because of their trade relations with China. Japan and India as competitors will be challenged, if not affected, and forced to turned the tide in their favour. Japan may devalue Yen and play the currency chess board with China, while trying to garner a larger global market share.

The profligacy of some American realtors took the world deep into a recession in 2008; can the devaluation of Yuan, the fourth in 12 months and the largest in 20 years, trigger another global recession? The answer depends on which part of the world you are staying.

S

ituated in Southeast Asia, Thailand is predominantly a Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant from India and China. Known by outsiders as Siam for centuries, Thailand has been something of a Southeast Asian migratory, cultural, and religious crossroads. Thailand offers over 1,000 miles of coastline of white sandy beaches, bays and coves, with many beach and island activities for people of all ages. Visitors can experience a revitalizing Thai massage in the “heavenly land of spas” or go shopping in one of Thailand’s upscale shopping malls, high street shops, bustling markets, and back street stalls. Thai food has become one of the most popular cuisines in the world, made up of the Thailand’s four main regions – Northern, Northeastern, Central and Southern. Travel to Thailand and experience all that Thailand has to offer! Developed enough to provide

AUGUST 2015 | ASIAN TRAVELLER

Thailand offers over 1,000 miles of coastline of white sandy beaches, bays and coves, with many beach and island activities for people of all ages. most comforts yet still wild enough to offer off-the-beaten path adventure, Thailand is a country ripe with opportunity for once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences. Whether you start with the world-class beaches in the south or the mountain villages in the north, Thailand will not disappoint. Cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai are bustling hives of activity and commerce, but you haven’t really seen the country until you’ve trekked in the mountains or enjoyed some face-time with elephants or the bold monkeys. Thailand’s attractions are diverse and each provides a rewarding and memorable experience in its own way.

7

Railay Beach Krabi province is home to some of Thailand’s most famous beach destinations, and Railay is the cream of the crop. Widely considered one of the best beaches in the country, Railay delivers on promises of white sand beaches, clear blue water, and a feeling that you’ve found a slice of paradise. You have to take a boat to reach the island getaway, with services available from Krabi town and Ao Nang. The beaches are the main reason to visit Railay, but it’s also a rock-climbing hotspot. Railay’s karst peaks draw adventurers both experienced and novice to try their hand at climbing the towering limestone cliffs. Among the many other active things to do, you can go elephant trekking, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and snorkeling, or take on some lighter options such as cooking classes and indulging in a massage. There’s also the tourist-friendly Diamond Cave, with a convenient walkway to accommodate curious visitors looking to do some exploring between stretches of sunbathing.

Koh Phi Phi The Phi Phi Islands, also in Krabi, are one of Thailand’s most popular resort areas for a reason. Only Phi Phi Don is inhabited, with day trips available to the surrounding islands. One of the fun spots on Koh Phi Phi is Monkey Beach, where you’ll come face-to-face, literally, with the namesake creatures. You can hire a guide to take you out on a small wooden boat or rent your own kayak. There’s also a small stand where you can buy snacks and fruit shakes, but hang onto your treats. If you leave them unguarded, the monkeys will brazenly dig in and chow down right in front of you. Long Beach is another nice spot on the island; it’s not a secluded place, but is great for watching the sunset. If you’re lucky and the tide is out, it’s a beautiful walk back toward

8

the main part of the island. Tour operators offer packages for snorkeling and diving trips, as well as excursions to the infamous Maya Bay, where the Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Beach was filmed. Because Koh Phi Phi draws so many tourists, there are plenty of tour companies arranging tickets to other beach destinations, such as Phuket, Koh Chang, and Koh Lanta. Though you would hardly know to see it now, Phi Phi Don was one of the areas hit hard by the 2004 tsunami. Guesthouses, restaurants, and

markets have been rebuilt and crowds still come in droves to the resort island. There is a small, somber memorial park to honor those who died in the tragedy, yet the resort areas appear otherwise revived.

The Grand Palace, Bangkok Even if your plans for Thailand mainly involve frolicking on a beach, cozying up to elephants, and eating as much Massaman curry and tom ka gai as humanly possible, you’ll probably spend at least a day or two in Bangkok. ASIAN TRAVELLER | AUGUST 2015

There’s plenty to see and do in the capital, but it’s perhaps best to start with the Grand Palace. This is the number one sightseeing attraction in the city, and it’s staggering in historical significance and craftsmanship. The grounds are a maze of royal halls, temples, and ancient relics, the most important being Wat Phra Kaeo, Temple of the Emerald Buddha. A relic within this temple is said to be a piece of bone or hair from the enlightened Buddha himself. Allow several hours to do the Grand Palace justice, but if you’re up for more walking afterward, you can easily take in some of the city’s other major landmarks. The famous Wat Po and Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn (a great place to watch the sunset), are also nearby. And as Bangkok is a main hub for international travel, it’s a great starting point for excursions throughout the country.

Sunday Walking Street, Chiang Mai Every looks forward to cheap and delicious food, and it can be found in abundance at Chiang

10

Mai’s Sunday Night Walking Street. Vendors sell all kinds of treats: pad Thai, chicken satay, samosas, crab cakes, fried bananas, sweet rotees, and fresh fruit shakes - often for less than $2 a piece. When you’ve satisfied your culinary cravings, you can peruse hundreds of stalls selling an array of unique goods such as all-natural soaps, hand-dyed textiles bearing the unique patterns of local hill tribes, incense and essential oils, musical instruments, paintings, wall hangings, and more. The market gets crowded every week without fail, no matter what time of year you’re visiting, so brace yourself and try to enjoy being part of the throng. This is a must-do in Chiang Mai, and is an essential part of the Thailand experience. If you’re not around for the Sunday market, or just want to get a taste of other market experiences in Chiang Mai, check out the Saturday Night Walking Street or the Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road, a daily event. For something less touristy, check out the daytime Warorot Market, near Mae Ping River.

Pai Thailand’s reputation as a country of beautiful landscapes and friendly people is thanks largely to the world-renowned southern beaches. Most people don’t realize that the vast north is also home to breathtaking landscapes, though these are of a different nature entirely. Northern Thailand, particularly the western region near the Burmese border, is marked by mountainous jungle terrain that is both rugged and beautiful. Pai, in Mae Hong Son province, is a perfect place from which to enjoy the country’s natural beauty as well as the famed Thai hospitality and cooking. This small town has developed a reputation as a mecca for hippies and backpackers, though you will see locals and families here as well. There is a small nightly walking street market, a variety of local and Western foods, and easy access to nearby temples, waterfalls, and the impressive Pai canyon. There is an air of cheerfulness and relaxation as you walk through the tiny town center, and it is this vibe that ASIAN TRAVELLER | AUGUST 2015

continues to draw crowds season after season.

Khao Yai National Park Elephants are revered in Thailand, and statues and paintings of them can be seen everywhere you go. There are many tour groups and elephant camps throughout the country allowing you to spend a day or more with the creatures, trekking through the jungle, bathing them, and even getting to help out with their morning feedings. But perhaps more exciting is the chance to see them in their natural environment, and Khao Yai National Park provides a great opportunity to do just that. You’ll see elephants roaming near waterfalls, exotic birds of prey, monkeys, and plenty of other tropical creatures that call the park home. If a one-day stay isn’t enough to take it all in, it’s possible to camp out at the park and get up early enough to watch the sunrise over the lush landscape.

Sukhothai Old City This is a favorite stop for history buffs and photography enthusiasts, as there are many lovely photo ops in this ancient capital of Thailand. Ruins of this old city still stand proud despite enduring centuries of battle and exposure to the elements. Sukhothai’s Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and much has been invested to restore and preserve one of Thailand’s most significant historical sites. Attractions here include many wats, which speak to the country’s long history of Buddhist devotion. Each structure tells its own story of the old society, with relics and influences from other ancient civilizations appearing in the design of each.

romantic ruins of the former capital. After the Sukhothai period, the city was the most important in Thailand, and the old palaces and temples stand as a testament to this. There are also several foreign settlements, where you can gain a greater understanding of the influence other countries had in Thailand at the time. Ayutthaya is located only a short bus trip or train ride from Bangkok, making it convenient for a day trip if you’re pressed for time. If you’re on a more leisurely schedule, plan on spending a few days in the ancient capital and rent a push-bike to tour both the old city and the new.

Doi Suthep Perhaps the best-known wat in Chiang Mai sits atop Doi Suthep, a mountain overlooking Thailand’s northern rose of a city. In a crowd of monks, devout Buddhist followers, and fellow travelers, you’ll have a chance to marvel at intricate religious carvings, observe worship rituals, and gaze out over the ever-growing sprawl of Chiang Mai city. Just be sure to bring a bottle of water and your walking shoes - the staircase to the temple is steep. At the base of the stairs, vendors hawk everything from tasty local treats to goods handmade by villagers from the surrounding mountains. There’s also a shop selling masks, elephant carvings, and home furnishings so you can do some shopping while recovering from the trek up and down the stairs. You can combine your trip to Doi Suthep with excursions to Doi Pui, a small Hmong village in the mountains. It’s far more touristy than other villages, but if you’re on a tight schedule, this will give you a taste of Hmong culture and a chance to learn more about the hill tribe communities in the region, not to mention purchase some beautiful hand-woven textiles. 12

The Bhubing Palace, open to tourists, is on the way to Doi Pui from Doi Suthep as well.

Doi Inthanon This is the highest peak in Thailand, and the national park that surrounds it is filled with some of the many the natural wonders that make the country such a draw in the first place. You can do some trekking and hike the mountain, or take a more leisurely route around the park. Several waterfalls and a hill tribe village are other draws, along with two pagodas built to honor King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. You’ll want to either hire a driver for the day or rent a motorbike and see the sites on your own, as you won’t be able to make your way through the entire park on foot. But it’s only about a two-hour drive from the city, so if you leave early, you can get in a full and satisfying day on the mountain.

Wat Chedi Luang Ruins aren’t exactly a rare sight in Chiang Mai, or in Thailand generally, for that matter. But there’s something about Wat Chedi Luang that is particularly beautiful and haunting. Constructed in 1401, the imposing structure was damaged during an earthquake in 1545. But it remains remarkable today, and you can still see the massive elephant carvings that adorn it. Beneath a huge gum tree on the left of the entrance to the precinct stands a delightful little temple, the Lak Muang. Built in 1940 on the site of an earlier wooden building, the shrine is the abode of Chiang Mai’s guardian spirit (Lak Muang). According to tradition, if the great tree should fall, disaster will overtake the city. The temple is something to behold at any time of day, but it’s particularly lovely at night, when it is all lit up. ASIAN TRAVELLER | AUGUST 2015

13

Wat Prasingh TThis temple stands at the heart of the Old City, which is where travelers spend much of their time. Amidst the close sois, or alleys, and heavy motorbike traffic, Wat Prasingh rises at the end of Rachadamnoen Road. It is the largest wat in the city, and dates to 1345 when an ancient king built it in his father’s honor. The father’s ashes are still buried on the grounds - but don’t let that spook you from visiting. The decadent structures are impressive, and it’s an especially great place to check out on Sundays. The wat’s most sacred shrine is a small building called the Phra Wiharn Lai Kam, erected during the reign of King San Muang Ma (1385-1401) to house the famous, now sadly headless, Sukhothai-style figure known as the Phra Singh Buddha. According to tradition the Buddha, in the familiar “calling the earth to witness” pose, came to Thailand from Ceylon, finding its way first to Ayutthaya and then to Kamphaeng Phet, Chiang Rai, Luang Prabang and back again to Ayutthaya before, in 1767, arriving in Chiang Mai where it has been ever since (but there are doubts as to the relic’s authenticity). Head to Wat Prasingh in the early afternoon and you’ll have a chance to browse a market on the grounds, perusing creative souvenirs and sampling fresh juices and teas after visiting the temple.

Floating Markets A visit to one of the floating markets is a fun way to do some shopping and eating while supporting local vendors and observing local commerce in action. Some do seem to cater more to the tourist crowds than to be part of the fabric of local Thais’ daily lives, but there are others that make for a nice authentic travel experience. You’ll need to get up early to visit a floating market, as vendors are out in their long wooden boats first thing in the morning with their goods, fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and tasty dishes. There are several floating markets near Bangkok, Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak being among the most popular. You can go it alone or join a guided tour, which can include visits to local houses and shops. 14

oty is nurtured in the Nilgiris or the ‘Blue Mountains’, it is a spellbinding little hill station in Tamil Nadu. As a highlight of Ooty tourism, it has pleasant weather all year round that makes it a perfect getaway destination in the summer. The lush green tea plantations and dense forests offer stunning vistas. South India’s most famous hill station was a realm of tribal people and shola forests till the British annexed the Nilgiris in 1799 and John Sullivan, Collector of Coimbatore, made the first stone house here in 1823. Over the years, Ooty- hardly ever called by its original name, Udhagamandalam- took its place as a Nilgiris tea-plantation hot spot. It served as the summer headquarters of the sahibs who ruled from Madras and got its own churches, bungalows and picnic spots. Much of which now makes it one of the most popular holiday destinations in India. During the holiday season, Ooty can be extremely crowded. But the secret to getting the best out

You will get a heady cocktail of rolling hills, tea plantations, villages, unbridled greenery, unexpected lakes. In the off season - when every comfort is still on offer and an umbrella and a change of socks can see you through much - look out for sharp fragrance of ghostly pines lining misty roads. Botanical Garden Ooty Botanical Garden is one of the best tourist attraction places which attract the tourist from all over the world. This garden was laid out in 1847 by the Marquis of Tweedale and is spread over 22 hectares ascending the slopes on the hill at an elevation of 2,400 meters above Main Sea Level. An explicit collection of flowering tress, beautiful shrubs, and rare colored lilies are seen. Flourishing green well maintained lawns, rare trees species a 20 million year old fossil tree, a monkey’s puzzle tree – monkeys can’t climb this tree, an Italian - style garden bordering, a immense variety of flowering bushes, flowers, and plants , fern house with a vast range ferns and orchids, a clear pool are some of the highlights of this garden. . Not surprisingly, it’s a favorite destination for students who specialize in plant science. The Garden is maintained by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu and has a very wide variety of plants that include different types of roses, imported shrubs, rare flowering plants etc. The east hill of this garden also houses the tribes of Nilgiris, called Todas. Their tradition and culture is a matter of significance if you were interested in human civilization. The “Summer Festivals” is held each year during the month of May in the Botanical Garden. A flower show along with an exhibition of rare plant species is held every year in the third weekend of May at this garden. If you were lucky enough you may run into your favorite movie hero or heroine. Botanical gardens have provided their best ambience support for many song sequences and still continue to do so.

Ooty Lake & Boat House From just behind the central Bus Stand (also near the Railway station) the famous Ooty Lake stretches, in an irregular ‘L’ shape, for about 2.75 kms in length and varying distances in width(100m – 140m). For the curious, this lake was artificially formed by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1823-25 by damming the mountain streams flowing down Ooty valley. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Pioneering Excellence He has over 12 years of travel management and operations experience in leading travel companies like Thomas Cook, Carlson Wagonlit and Rosenbluth Travel. During his tenures, he managed corporate travel for some of the largest global travel accounts like Halliburton, Flour Daniel, Infosys and Wipro. He has vast experience in transitioning and running operations for some of the largest travel brands of Europe. In this interview with Asian Traveller, Deepak Mavinkure, Founder & CEO RepuFact, talks about his stint at Travelguru and Repufact.

What was your inspiration in starting Repufact? I was part of the founding team at Travelguru, acquired by Travelocity in 2010 and later sold out to Yatra in 2012. With Travelguru, I am proud that we build the best hotel product for India and delivered leading edge technology solutions to global market leaders like Travelocity, Trust International etc. The strong domain experience in the hotel industry inspired us with the next startup, the idea is to build a world class product. RepuFact aspires to be the world’s

best analytical tool for the hotel industry. How do you define hotel reputation management? What are the functions involved? What is the competitive edge your firm can impart to your clients? Reputation Management seems like a much maligned word these days. What is the use of having a great reputation, if it does not help improve revenues or profitability? We are in the business of helping customers to not just

understand their reputation quotient but also correlate it to improved top and bottom line. We look at Reputation from 3 critical angles • From a customer’s viewpoint – With the democratization of the web, managing customer viewpoint has become critically important. There is the cookie cutter way (that most hotels adopt) and there can be a smarter way (that we can help the hotels with) to manage this well. • From the Hotel Management viewpoint –

ASIAN TRAVELLER | AUGUST 2015

When we source hotel data from 126 different sites across 25 languages, we can provide hotels with deep analysis of the guests’ thought process. Our 4 step analysis methodology helps hotels figure out the minutest of the problem/advantage that their customer perceive off, add value to it and helps them take tactical as well as strategic decisions • From the Hotel Business Unit’s viewpoint – A large part of our investment has been made towards ensuring that we have really strong customer analytical tools for the hotel. Our tool has the ability to combine data from RepuFact, the hotels private data and industry reports and churn mind blowing solutions that each business unit within the hotel can utilize to further improve their business. What is the ideal clientele you are targeting at? Today our client base includes 3 types of customers • Large hotel technology partners – Our partnership with RezNext connects us to 2000 hotels in India, across all sizes and ratings. We are also in final level of discussion with a global brand to provide guest analytics to their 8000 hotels, largely based in Europe and America • Chain hotels – Partnerships with Pride Group, GRT and JP Fortune are signed. We are also in talks with some of the largest Indian hotel brands and will announce some really large partnerships in days to come • Small standalone hotels – Our smallest customer is a 16 room property in Goa. We also work with niche upscale hotels like Vyatri Resorts, RainTree Hotels etc So any hotel that is serious in listening to its customers and improving its Guest

understanding is our ideal client. You are a pioneer in the field. You are unique in certain respects: the first customer intelligence technology platform in India, besides being the first start-up company. Your services offer enhanced revenue to hospitality industry. Can you elaborate? Yes, we are pioneers in this space considering our huge focus on analytics and our ability to not just highlight the challenges, but also provide solutions to them. I do not think there is anyone else in the world who is doing these analytics the way we are. Here are some ways in which our services can help hotels to enhance their revenues: • Grow direct bookings, thus saving expensive intermediator commission • Improve SEO and thus grow business generated from the website • Ensure repeat customers due to prompt handling of customer issues • Grow ancillary business from Spa, Health Club, Business Centers etc by focusing on strengths and weaknesses of each unit. Mr. Deepak, you played a leading role at Travelguru. How did you enjoy your stint there? How different is your role at Repufact? I was fortunate to be part of TravelGuru founding team since the first VC pitch that we made to Sequoia. We had a great team and I believed we build the best hotel product for the Indian Hotel Industry. It was a great roller coaster ride for us at TG, where we did see the peaks of 2006-07 and then the troughs of the recession that followed. RepuFact is a one of its kind product that we have built from a concept stage. The risks are

higher, but so is our confidence. We have taken great pain to talk to 100s of hotels and build a product that we believe suits them. It has been tough for us to convince investors that India can build a world class product, however now that we have a kickass product investors seem to be excited. We were lucky to have an option of three term sheets to select from! You are a game-changer of technology. What innovative technology are you introducing at Repufact? There are about four world different concepts that are combining to build this proprietary product. • Our first big solution is around tracking, identifying and sourcing any comment about our customer that is written anywhere in the world and in over 26 different important languages. So we provide a single platform to manage all reviews • We then use some of the world’s latest solutions to understand the semantics of the write-up. These semantics and broken into positive, neutral and negative sentiments, thus giving our customers a really simple and easy way to figure out the good and bad in their hotel as perceived by their guests • We have partnered one of the world’s best known analytics company to provide state-ofthe-art Business Intelligence to the hotel. From what I know, these are probably THE most comprehensive set of customer intelligence that anybody ever gives • Most importantly we then help hotels to keep in regular touch with their guests (while in-house or after check-out) and customize a product from them for either their existing stay or their next visit

f you are talking about dance or spirituality, there is no way you can leave out Shiva. The town of Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu is a tribute to Nataraja, the dancer avatar of the Destroyer. A temple venerated by classical dancers, the Nataraja Temple here is where the shivalingam has made way for an idol. The roof of the temple is said to be made of 21,600 tiles—the number of times a human breathes in a day. The gold-roofed temple and pillars depict Lord Shiva in the 108 poses of bharatanatyam. Here, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the tandava posture. ‘ As spring steps in, devotees in Tamil Nadu shuffle towards River Vaigai in Madurai. Men in silk-andsequined trousers make their way through the dusty streets, goatskin flasks slung over their shoulders. They fill the narrow-nozzled flasks with water from the river in preparation for one of the most important events in Madurai’s festival calendar—Lord Azhagar’s visit, which is celebrated as Chithirai Fair. And the house of worship is the Meenakshi Temple. According to legend, the wedding of Lord Shiva and his consort Meenakshi took place in Madurai, and the grandeur of the temple celebrates this legendary union. The temple’s five gopurams are known for their stucco work, and its ‘hall of a thousand pillars’ is a museum of icons, photographs and illustrations. Everything at this temple is larger than life—the temple complex, the colossal statues and the towers. Tiny in size but of mammoth significance is the island of Rameswaram. This is where Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva to atone for slaying Ravana, the demon king. The Ramanathaswamy Temple here has one of the 12 jyotirlingams in India. Interestingly, the island is in the shape of a conch. Another beautiful expression of faith in Tamil Nadu is the Santhome Basilica in Chennai, one of the only three churches in the world to have been built over the tomb of an apostle of Christ. Dedicated to St Thomas, the Basilica finds place in Marco Polo’s travelogues and the Feast of St Thomas in July is the biggest event here.

saving to buy him a fancy new uniform but to not come back for her that was just too much. Désirée took it upon herself to sneak off to Paris and track him down like the dog he was.

I could never have imagined that before Napoleon loved Josephine there was someone else in his life, someone who played a very important role in the French Revolution. Désirée Clary the daughter of a silk merchant in Marseilles loved Napoleon before he was anything to the French people. She fell in love with him when he was a poor low ranking officer in the military.

Upon arriving in Paris Désirée knew exactly where to find him. She went to the infamous “La Chaumiére”, Mme. Tallien’s salon where all the important people of France hung out. After being mistaken at the entrance for an escort Désirée was not admitted in until she approached a man in uniform and asked him to be “a part of him”. Désirée quickly discovered the reason Napoleon never came back for her. Josephine, the enchanting Josephine from the saucy island of Martinique was hanging on him.

Napoleon’s mother Mme. Letizia never really liked her daughter in-law Josephine and now I know why. He was supposed to marry Désirée and I do not think Letizia ever really accepted Josephine for that reason. Napoleon was engaged to Désirée and her sister Julie married Napoleon’s elder brother Joseph. It was when Napoleon left Marseilles to go to war and then onto Paris to clear up his military standing that he left Désirée behind. It was one thing to borrow her money she had been

Désirée had the unfortunate coincidence of showing up at the salon at the precise moment that the couple announced their new engagement to each other. Like any other woman who had just found she had lost the only love she knew, she furiously threw her glass of champagne at Josephine’s feet and stormed out into the rain. Wandering Paris in the

rain and tears she found herself by the Sein River. Emotionally distraught she tried to climb the fence to throw herself into the river but something held her back. “Even I was shocked that when she turned around to see what or who it was: it was the man in uniform at the salon who had saved her two times in one day.” They say what is meant to be is meant to be and it is just fate. It was mean to be that the hero General Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte pulled her off the bridge and saved her life. Jean-Baptiste was a realist; he loved France with every fiber of his being and did his duty to his country which during the times of the revolution was not an easy thing to do with the fractions constantly shifting. After Bernadotte met Désirée by the river she disappeared into thin air. It was not until her brother in law had arranged a special dinner party to impress a heroic general did the two cross paths again. This time though Bernadotte was not going to let her disappear again.

REVIEW - MOVIE

WHILE WE’RE

Young

N

oah Baumbach’s latest film, “While We’re Young,” begins with the image of an adorable infant with a sweetly tinkling lullaby playing in the background. It’s a contrast that perfectly encapsulates the film’s pushpull between the wisdom of age and the optimism of youth, as well as the balance it strikes between zesty ambition and quiet resignation. Baumbach’s lead characters—a longtime husband and wife played with a natural, lived-in chemistry – are so vocal about how content they are as childless New Yorkers in their mid-40s. And yet, when they strike up an unlikely friendship with a spirited couple in their mid-20s, they can’t help but get sucked into their energetic vortex. As writer and director, Baumbach allows us to enjoy the silliness of the older couple’s newfound lust for life. “While We’re Young” vividly makes fun of a specific subculture of hyper-articulate New York denizen, as well as the way its characters try to stave off the malaise of aging by clinging to characters who radiate the exotic promise of youth. But it also takes a clear-eyed look at the narcissism that can result from settling into a smug life of parenthood and domesticity.

Director : Noah Baumbach Language : English

But “While We’re Young” takes a turn in the third act as it grapples with some ethical dilemmas, and it doesn’t quite work. It becomes angrier and heavier as Josh uses his inquisitive nature to unearth some dark truths—both about himself and his new friends. It feels like a totally different movie as it reaches its very public climax, and an inferior one. Many Baumbach movies feature brilliant but immature people doing terrible things to each other and “While We’re Young” is no exception. The observant and mocking humor that makes the film’s first twothirds so breezy and enjoyable gives way to shattering realizations, but Baumbach ultimately tempers that instinct somewhat by exhibiting genuine sympathy for Stiller’s character.

Wellness Therapy in Taiwan

Modern medicine sometimes is not being able to effectively cure all ills – so people are willing to turn to alternative therapies to heal holistically and completely. And there is no better place than Taiwan to explore these possible health improvements. For years, Taiwan has encouraged the use of hotsprings, aromatherapy, sauna therapy, reflexology, acupuncture supplemented with medicinal food as a means to achieve optimum health. The massage techniques used in Taiwan include traditional Chinese massage, and other techniques from various parts of the world. Taiwan also has a large number of hot springs, and in most places you can take a relaxing hot-spring bath followed by a massage. A recommended 3-day wellness itinerary in Taiwan starts in its beautiful capital Taipei. Thanks to Taiwan’s fantastic public transport system, the area around Beitou is easily (and cheaply) accessible by a fast train! Beitou is blessed with the geothermal bounty of neighbouring Yang Ming Shan which is still an active volcano plus a National Park. Straight across from the Beitou train station is the Hot Spring Museum, a lovingly restored Japanese colonial-era bathhouse containing all you ever needed to know about the history of Beitou’s spas. A wonderful one-day trip in Northern Taiwan kicks off in Jiufen Old Street that used to be the center during the days of gold mining in northeast Taiwan. The most prosperous shopping district is Jiufen Old Street that goes through most of the village with its quaint shops and yummy eating joints. Then move on to the Yehliu Geopark that is famous for its sea-erosion landscape and natural beauty as most of the spots are very close to the sea. Post lunch continue the tour to Damsui Fisherman’s Wharf which is a scenic spot at the western tip of Tamsui, Taipei County. The Wharf is well-known for its beautiful sunsets, fresh seafood, sightseeing and leisure facilities; and is a lovely sight with 38

fishing boats bobbing on the water and their sails billowing in the breeze. Its then onto Damsui Old Street that is tucked in between Danshui waterfront promenade and the bustling ZhongZheng Road. Danshui Old Street is a pedestrian friendly street with many stores that are ideal for browsing and shopping for souvenirs from, and an enormous array of food stalls and restaurants. Now that is what we call a day well-spent! The next day head to the Jinshan hot spring region that is located on the northern side of Yangmingshan, the volcanic National Park. About an hour’s drive from Taipei, here on a clear day one you see right till the ocean at the northernmost tip of Taiwan’s rugged coastline. This area is also a popular haunt for hikers, who love to end their long day walking, at its many hot-spring resorts that are positioned beautifully against a background of sweeping mountain scenery. The next day, walk around Taipei City which also has a number of well-designed and professionally managed stand-alone spas and 5-star hotels that offer complete packages or just facials and massages. In Taipei, you can even opt for a foot massage or a reflexology session, with qualified practitioners that are available at popular tourist spots such as night-markets or at dedicated parlours near its famous sight-seeing points. Foot massage in modern Taiwanwas popularised some 30 years ago by a priest from Switzerland, Father Josef Eugster (in Chinese simply known as Father Wu;), who rediscovered and systematically developed the massage techniques in Taiwan. Some forms of foot massages massages in Taiwan are also eponymously named after him as the ‘Wu Massage’. Reflexology is known to promote blood flow and increase metabolism, and is ideal for Indian travelers after a long day exploring Taipei’s wonderful shopping and cultural sights! MP Tourism to Organize Second Edition of Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart InterContinental Bali Resort offers guests and visitors the opportunity to browse and purchase Bali’s colourful handicrafts at a twice-weekly art market held in the grounds of the Resort. The rich artistic traditions of Bali have lead to the evolution of a vibrant handicraft industry, in which handicrafts are created to be sold in the local art shops and markets, as well as for export worldwide, providing employment and business opportunities for hundreds of thousands of local people. Souvenirs and art objects range from everyday items, trinkets, fashion accessories, batik fabrics and shirts, sarongs, luxuriant silk scarves, kites, figurines and whimsical woodcarvings, parasols, paintings and homewares to iconic knick-knacks and collector’s treasures that you won’t find outside of the island. A wide range of handicrafts, both useful and decorative – including rice spoons, salad servers, bowls, fans, woven mats, purses, bags, hats, baskets, lampshades, boxes, wind chimes, photo albums and candle holders are made from natural fibres and materials such as pandanus, rattan, banana leaves, bamboo, roots and grasses, bone, coconut shell and buffalo horn. Paint, dye, shells, beads and other natural ornamentation is used to embellish these items, many of which have developed over time into distinctive art forms. You will even find boxes and model ships made entirely from cloves. Bali is well known for its busy art markets, which are frequented by residents, tourists, retailers and exporters. Most present a rambling scene of small kiosks arranged within a semi-open-air complex. Others, such as the huge Kumbasari art market in Denpasar, feature a covered layout within a dedicated building. Mahamantra, Book on the Essence of Leadership Released

Mahamantra, book on the Essence of Leadership released It’s vital in keeping up with the changing trends. In doing so, one has to also transform into becoming a Leader from just being a Manager. This in itself will enhance your capabilities to survive in the hospitality sector or any other sector. This is an excerpt from Raj Gopal Iyer’s new book Mahamantra. The author goes on to say that merely having skills that are tried and tested will only restrict you to a few clientele of your business. It is of utmost importance that one improvises his/her skill sets and out of the box thinking, in keeping pace to suit the ever-changing market trends and have the uncanny knack to face up to challenges that your competitors throw at you. This will definitely boost your share of the market. Mentoring is a must do for a true leader on his agenda. That is how one hones his skill sets. Mahamantra – Essence of Leadership is a complete guide to all those budding and aspiring Leaders in improving their skills which will help them in achieving their goals. Management v/s leadership – is often heard with distinction these days. If the management’s focus is purely on getting a job done, controlling budgets, with a keen eye on targets and steady execution. A true leader concentrates on the changing trends and innovation that will reap a better yield. Most have written about leadership and continuing importance of management. Success nevertheless depends on how it’s executed, controls and boundaries, systems adapted and processes. Without all these a leadership will only produce superficial dreams. Moreover, being a leader has 48

taken a shiny & romantic aura these days while managers have been given the grubby practicality. Leaders are superior beings helping the rest of us to greatness while managers are dull business functionaries obsessed with budgets, policies and procedures. Nevertheless, both leaders and managers are vital components form the crux of any business, which is very crucial. To survive and succeed in any business, all groups and businesses must simultaneously change in their execution and innovation by staying on course and foster changes apparently. Yes, the guidance, group skills and mindsets are required for serious changes and innovations differ from those that need continuity and steady execution. But that also means, that those in charge must be able to don different hats in being a change agent and steward of continuity to a Manager and a Leader, as and when the situation warrants. A true leader will always take responsibility of his subordinates work in leading from the front and set examples. Focus on what is necessarily required in making your employees more proactive and productive. Most importantly do not perceive yourself as a glorious leader, blazing new trails whilst leaving the mundane gritty details in making it all work to lesser mortals. One must at all time, keep preaching “I am Not a Manager” but the survival of the business does probably owe as much to your management skills as it does to your leadership talents. Hope this book will enhance the skill sets of all young budding managers to become true leaders with exemplary qualities in achieving their long term goals and improve them in their personal as well as professional lives. Thailand to Be a Premier Golfing Getaway

Goa to Celebrate Bonderam Festival

The Tourism Authority of Thailand concluded the Thailand Golf Travel Mart 2015. Designed to attract more golfers to Thailand, the event underscored the Kingdom’s rapidly growing popularity as a world-class golfing destination. TAT invited 153 golfers from 27 overseas offices to the Thailand Golf Travel Mart, held between August 4 and August 6 2015 at Dusit Thani Hua Hin Hotel. They networked and inked deals with 95 sellers across golf courses, golf schools, golf service providers and equipment dealers. This allowed them to familiarize themselves with golf courses and survey support facilities. Thailand has a lot going for it on the golf front: With over 200 world-class golf courses, many designed by internationally acclaimed architects, topped with competitive green fees against the backdrop of Thailand’s amazing landscapes and complemented by myriad attractions, the destination makes for a great golf escape. Traditional golf markets for Thailand have been Japan, Korea and Europe. Today, India and China have also risen to be key markets with many HNIs and upwardly mobile individuals jet-setting for golf getaways to Thailand. The golf market will be among TAT’s key focus areas in the years to come as the tourism embarks on a strategy aimed at ensuring qualitative (measured by spend, length of stay and maturity of the tourist experience) growth versus quantitative (measured by arrivals) growth only. Thailand has welcomed 426,876 Indians from January through May 2015, indicating that arrivals in half yearly arrivals crossed the half a million mark. In 2014, 946,269 Indians travelled to Thailand.

Goa is all set to organize the Bonderam festival, which is celebrated in the island of Divar, located 12 kms from Panjim city, on the fourth Saturday of August. This year the festival falls on August 22, 2015. The name Bonderam originates from ‘Bandeira’ – the Portuguese word for flag. During the Portuguese rule there were frequent disputes between the villagers on the Divar island over property issues. Thus the Portuguese introduced a system by putting up flags to demarcate the boundaries. The otherwise laidback island of Divar comes alive on the day of the Bonderam festival. The day begins with a Flag Parade from the main Divar junction, which is accompanied by a Brass Band. After this the Bonderam festival is officially declared open. Later in the day there is a fancy dress competition followed by the traditional float parade and a live musical performance featuring the famous music bands of Goa. The festival begins close to noon and concludes late in the evening.

Time for Rickshaw Run

It is time yet again for the Rickshaw Run to hit the road. Organised by UK company The League of Adventurists since 2006, the Rickshaw Run is the largest three-wheeler event on the planet. The brave participants from around the world are now gathering in Shillong. They are about to embark on an epic journey to Kochi, in the deep south of the country. The teams have no set route, 54

no back up along the way, and are truly on their own. Event Manager Matthew Dickens maintains a stiff British upper lip through the frenzy of activity in Shillong where 83 teams are prepping and pimping their rickshaws in anticipation of the grand launch on Wednesday 5th August. The participants representing 23 countries shall be riding, rolling and wiggling their way across the subcontinent in their tinny steeds covering approximately 5000kms on their way to Kochi. What makes this journey even more memorable and noble is the fact that each team raises £1000 for charity – with at least half of this going towards the official rainforest preservation charity – Cool Earth. Kochi is the birthplace of the Rickshaw Run and is therefore very dear to the event. With its charming and quaint streets it makes an ideal finish line, where the teams can relax – if they manage to complete the journey it that is. For many of the participants it will be many firsts – whether it’s travelling to India, driving a rickshaw or just experiencing the enthusiasm and love that the people of this country are so famous for.

Japan Introduces Website to Boost Tourist Spending Travelling to Japan could be rewarding as a recent survey by “Consumption Trend Survey for Foreigners Visiting Japan” published by the Japan Tourism Agency shows that some 90% of foreign visitors to Japan are “strongly interested in visiting tax-free shops,” in spite of the current situation where actual tax-free shop usage remains low due to lack of information. It has been witnessed that many visitors encounter difficulties after arrival in Japan like where to find tax-free shops, where free Wi-Fi is available and easy methods for exchanging currency. To ease all these hurdles HYOJITO CO. LTD. decided to enhance the travel experience of foreign visitors by introducing “TaxFreeShops. jp,” a comprehensive information website of taxfree shops in Japan allowing users to easily search or browse tax-free shops (containing the address, items sold, and map of the shops) online. For those seeking for a higher level of satisfaction, the website also provides special paid content that includes useful information such as shop photos, official website addresses, telephone numbers, and accepted credit cards, as well as exclusive shop-specific discount coupons. The website features high usability, as it was developed based on interviews with foreign visitors. ASIAN TRAVELLER | AUGUST 2015

Dyffryn Gardens Named Top Special Place in Wales

Kung Fu Panda-Themed Restaurant Opens on The Quantum of The Seas Royal Caribbean International and DreamWorks Animation commemorated the grand opening of the Kung Fu Panda Noodle Shop, a new family style eatery on board Quantum of the Seas and the first-ever DreamWorks Animation Kung Fu Panda themed restaurant on land or at sea. Guests will be able to give their taste buds a “Kung Fu” kick with the bold flavors of dim sum delights, savory noodle bowls and traditional Chinese desserts alongside Po and the cast of colorful characters from the DreamWorks Animation film Kung Fu Panda.

The Vale of Glamorgan beauty spot now joins last year’s winner Penarth Pier Pavilion in the Special Places hall of fame. Over the past 12 weeks thousands of people have been voting for their top Special Places in Wales, as part of National Trust Wales’s national conversation to find the nation’s most treasured place. Dyffryn Gardens was placed in the top five in July, as winner of the parks and gardens category and has been announced as the people’s official number one Special Place in Wales. Launched in May, Special Places kick-started a summer of campaigning by many iconic places in Wales to be the place that represents all that’s great about our country. An iconic Welsh landmark that’s steeped in history, Dyffryn Gardens scooped more than a third of the final votes, and was nominated for its breath-taking landscaped gardens, which include its famous cacti collection, arboretum and the recently-renovated 1920s garden rooms.

The newest addition on board, the Kung Fu Panda Noodle Shop will entice guests to indulge in four-piece dim sum, noodle bowls, such as Taiwanese spicy beef noodles, and desserts including sesame balls and custard tart. Guests also can strike a pose with Po and the Furious Five for a keepsake picture sure to reveal their inner Dragon Warrior. Menu items are priced a la carte, ranging from $2 to $5. The DreamWorks Experience, available only on Royal Caribbean, allows guests to get up close and personal with their favorite feature-film characters such as Shrek, Fiona and Puss In Boots of Shrek; Alex the Lion and the Penguins of Madagascar; Po of Kung Fu Panda; and Hiccup of How to Train Your Dragon. Guests can engage with their favorite characters during energetic parades, character breakfasts, themed activities and more. The DreamWorks Experience is available on Quantum of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas and Mariner of the Seas.

Nestled in the heart of Vale of Glamorgan, the site was taken on by the National Trust in 2013 and since then has reinforced its reputation as a mustsee tourist attraction for visitors both old and new. Its latest projects include the restoration of its famous garden rooms, which saw a number of the intimate garden rooms restored back to their 1920s splendour. These garden rooms re-opened just last month as part of the gardens’ Late Night Thursday events over the summer period. Special Places ambassador, TV personality and weather presenter, Sian Lloyd presented the team at Dyffryn with their prize – which includes money for a celebration event and official winners plaque.
