ear 2017 is the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. AsUnited Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said in his message on the occasion, tourism has become a pillar of economies, a passport to prosperity, and a transformative force for improving millions of lives. The world can and must harness the power of tourism to carry out the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UNWTO Secretary General, Taleb Rifai pointed out 2017 was a unique opportunity to promote the contribution of tourism to achieving the future we want – and also to determine, together, the exact role tourism should play in the sustainable development agenda. This is considered as “an incentive to a foster social and political dialogue which can promote initiatives, investments and government actions leading to development and the fight against poverty”. “The 2030 Agenda considers sustainable tourism as a vector of development, job creation and the promotion of local culture and products. Tourism is part of the Sustainable Development Goals and contributes decisively to almost all 17 Goals through its impacts on fighting poverty, promoting decent jobs, improving gender equality and the livelihoods of young people or the fight against climate change,” said the minister of foreign affairs and cooperation of Spain, Alfonso María Dastis, at the event organized for the formal launch of the programme. Considering the present world scenario, tourism is one sector which could play a significant role in solving the socio-economic issues of that threaten to upset the society. So it is high time that all stakeholders work together to achieve the goals of International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

Amazing Thailand Thailand continues to amaze tourists with its tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, ornate temples, wildlife and yet modern. ‘Thainess’ is something to be experienced
T
he latest ITB World Travel Trends 2016- 2017 report marks that Mekong is emerging as a boom tourist region. The subregion, covering Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi, welcomed 58.7 million international visitors in 2015 compared to 51.9 million the previous year and 31.1 million in 2010. Between 2010 and 2015, Thailand has got an increase of +87% in international arrivals followed by Myanmar and Cambodia. Thailand is a wondrous kingdom, featuring Buddhist temples, exotic wildlife, and spectacular islands. Along with a fascinating history and a unique culture that includes delectable Thai food and massage, Thailand features a modern capital city, and friendly people who epitomise Thailand’s “land of smiles” reputation. Start with Bangkok, the political, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, Bangkok which features

both old-world charm and modern convenience, at times served up in an apparently chaotic manner, but always with a gracious smile.
The Grand Palace One of the most popular tourist attractions of Bangkok, the Grand Palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1780’s and later home to the Thai King. Even today the palace is used to host several official events like royal ceremonies and state functions. Situated on the banks of Chao Phraya River at the heart of the Rattanakosin Island,
the palace is spread over 2,351,000 sq ft. The palace complex has got several impressive buildings including Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It houses the small, famous Emerald Buddha dating back to the 14th century. The Grand Palace is currently partially open to the public as a museum, but it remains a working palace, with several royal offices still situated inside. The Royal Reception Halls used for ceremonial European style reception room. Dusit Hall is another attraction here and is regarded as the
finest architectural building.
Wat Arun The statuesque pagoda of Wat Arun, or The Temple of Dawn, on the bank of Chao Phraya has always been the most remembered scene of Bangkok’s skyline for ages. It is believed that Wat Arun was built during Ayutthaya era. The temple was redecorated for the first time when King Taksin relocated the capital city from Ayutthaya to Thonburi in 1767, and built a palace near where the temple is. Wat Chaen or Wat Makok was officially renamed in the reign of King Rama II as Wat Arun Ratchatharam (means Temple of Dawn) but the grand pagoda wasn’t completed until the reign of King Rama III. During the reign of King Rama IV, he ordered to move the royal ash of King Rama II to store here, as well as refurbished and redecorated several structures of the temple. When the renovation completed he renamed the temple Wat Arun Ratchawararam (also means Temple of Dawn), which is the temple current official name.
ASIAN TRAVELLER | January 2017
The main highlight of Wat Arun is undoubtedly the grand pagoda, or prang in Thai. Influenced by Khmer-style pagoda, the 67-meter-tall pagoda is made of cement covered by million pieces of China porcelains. It is surrounded by four smaller pagodas. Wat Arun is also involved in the Royal Barge Procession as the temple is where the king would travel by river to deliver new robes to the monks at the end of the Buddhist Lent period.
Wat Pho One of the most visited Buddhist temples in Bangkok, it houses the sacred 46 m long Buddha statue whose feet are beautifully inlaid with pearls and carved with holy signs. Thais refer it as the nation’s first public university thanks to 1,360 marble inscriptions about medical, historical and liberal sciences all around the temple where the people can read and
learn anytime. Marble inscriptions about medical sciences, anatomy and orthopedics are the origins of Wat Pho Thai traditional massage principles, which has made Wat Pho a world’s famous site. The traditional service, nowadays, is also available at the nearby pavilion. In 2008, Wat Pho was listed UNESCO’s Memory of the World (MOW) as a documentary heritage for Asia and Pacific Region.
Chinatown Food lovers shouldn’t miss this place. Bangkok’s Chinatown, Thailand’s largest Chinese community, is commonly known among Thais as Yaowarat, according to the name of the road where it is located. Thai Kingdom’s trade relation with the Chinese dates back to the centuries. Today, Yaowarat is widely known as the kingdom’s largest center of gold trade and a great foodie destination. Yaowarat will
simply amaze you at day and night. During the day, Yaowarat is a simple shopping street with both sides of this one and a half kilometer road shops selling gold, Chinese herbs, fruits and Chinese restaurants serving authentic cuisine. After sunset, the road turns into a street food heaven where a number of food trucks with marvellous food, from Chinese fried noodles to iced Chinese dessert, you hardly find elsewhere.
Floating Markets After the James Bond movie featuring Floating Markets of Thailand, there has been huge increase in tourist visits to watch the trade and life going on floating markets. There are a number of floating markets alive today for the tourists to choose from. WatSai floating market is located at Moo 2, SoiTavornwattana, Ekachai Road, in Chomthong district, Thonburi. Once, it
lost its prominence as many roads were built in this area. Naturally the necessity to reach here in boat was diminished. However the authorities understanding the demand for floating market, has restored it to a beautiful tourist attraction again. The tourists can cruise along the historical route with the scenes of many boats on both sides. On the banks of the river is Wat Sai where the red standstone Buddha images in different postures are located. These Buddha images were built in the reign of Ayuttaya. The tourists can stop by to make a merit and visit the Golden Palace which King Suer built as a dedication for the monks. There are also other interesting places to visit such as the ancient drum tower, the temple of King Rama III with Chinese style. The next stop is WatBangpratoonnork, where there are beautiful Ubosot at the bank of KlongSanamchai Canal.

For visitors who want to change the atmosphere can also visit the snake farm to see all the important aspects of raising a snake or buy local products at the bank of KlongDaan.
Hua Hin The seaside town of Hua Hin, meaning “Stone Head”, was named after the rocks at the north end of the powdery sand beach. Hua Hin became Thailand’s first beach resort after a train line was laid in the 1920’s to provide access from Bangkok and King Rama VII established his summer retreat in the area. With
a 5 kilometer-long beach that features numerous activities, the laid back and hospitable town of Hua Hin continues to draw both tourists and Thais. In addition to beach fun and games, outstanding seafood restaurants, and a vibrant night market, Hua Hin is well known for having some of the finest golf courses in Thailand, as well as some of the most renowned resorts and destination spas in the world.
Laem Phromthep For the stunning beautiful sunset photographs at Phuket, go nowhere else but at Laem Phromthep at the southmost tip of Phuket island. On a clear day, the view it offers is unparalleled. Go early and sit back to enjoy the sun setting behind the Andaman sea. With its landscape easily recognisable by sailors, it is also the location of the 50-feet-tall Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse, erected in 1996 to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the King’s 50th anniversary of his accession to the throne.

Therapeutic Jordan
The Jordanian east coast of the Dead Sea has evolved into a major hub of health & wellness tourism
W
ithout a doubt the world’s most amazing place, the Jordan Rift Valley is a dramatic, beautiful landscape, which at the Dead Sea, is over 400m (1,312 ft.) below sea level. The lowest point on the face of the earth, this vast stretch of water receives a number of incoming rivers, including the River Jordan. Once the waters reach the Dead Sea they are land-locked and have nowhere to go, so they evaporate, leaving behind a dense, rich, cocktail of salts and minerals that supply industry, agriculture and medicine with some of its finest products.
Jordan’s geography has given it an important role to play as a conduit for trade and communications, connecting east and west, north and south. Jordan continues to play this role today. One of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the world, the Jordanian east coast of the Dead Sea has evolved into a major hub of both religious and health & wellness tourism
in the region. A series of good roads, excellent hotels with spa and fitness facilities, as well as archaeological and spiritual discoveries make this region as enticing to today’s international visitors as it was to kings, emperors, traders, prophets and pilgrims in antiquity. The Dead Sea is flanked by mountains to the east and the rolling hills of Jerusalem to the west, giving it an almost otherworldly beauty. Although sparsely populated and serenely quiet now, the area is believed to have been home to five Biblical cities: Sodom, Gomorrah, Adman, Zebouin and Zoar (Bela). We all deserve a break from your hectic work life to rejuvenate our mind
and pamper our soul and body. Jordan is blessed with some natural therapeutic sites with luxury resorts which offer a diverse range of amenities. These luxury resorts aim at providing its visitors a unique and relaxing experience catering to all of their health and fitness and beauty needs. Dead Sea is regarded as the world’s largest natural spa. Its facilities like Dead Sea mud bath and a relaxing experience at private beach of the luxury resorts are worth an experience. At 410m below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth. Jordan’s Dead Sea coast is one of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the world, and it remains as enticing to international visitors today as it was to kings, emperors, traders, and prophets in antiquity. A large amount of investment in the area has provided the Dead Sea with new roads making the new and luxurious 5 star hotels like
Jordan is a land steeped in history. It has been home to some of mankind’s earliest settlements and villages, and relics of many of the world’s great civilisations can still be seen today. the Movenpick Hotel and Resort, the Jordan Valley Marriott, the Kempenski Ishtar Hotel, and the 4 star Dead Sea Spa Hotel easily accessible. The main attraction of the Dead Sea is the soothing abnormally salty water itself. The salt content of the water is 31.5% making the water so buoyant that it is impossible for the visitor to sink. The water also contains 21 minerals including high levels of magnesium, sodium, potassium, and bromine and 12 of these minerals are found in no other body of water in the world. Studies have shown the
combination of the Dead Sea water and the rich black mud found along the shoreline to have significant health benefits including increasing circulation, easing discomfort from arthritis, healing allergies, and revitalising skin. A trip to the Dead Sea would not be complete without a visit to one of the first class health spa facilities of the luxury hotels. Here the visitor can enjoy year-round a massage, Dead Sea mud bath, use the excellent fitness facilities, or just spend the day relaxing on their beautiful private beaches. The Dead Sea region is blessed with ozone and oxygen rich air, low pollution, year round bright skies with UV filtered
sunlight, and perhaps most famously, its mineral rich water and sea mud. Indeed there are few places on earth that are as naturally therapeutic or so conducive to spa wellness journeys, and Spa treatments at the Dead Sea capture unparalleled wealth in extraordinary journeys.

on Three Wheels With no set of rules, Rickshaw Run by the Adventurists is one of the most crazy events to look out for the pure fun and experiences it offers
A
3,000km Indian adventure in a 7 horsepower glorified lawnmower. The Rickshaw Run is easily the least sensible thing to do with two weeks. At each end of the Run is a party of earth shattering proportions but what is between them is all down to you. And luck good or bad. No set route, no back-up, no way of knowing if you’re going to make it. The only certainty is that you will get lost, you will get stuck and you will break down. It’s just you and your mates in a wholly unsuitable vehicle, traversing the subcontinent enduring whatever the road throws at you. The Adventurists are at it again, romping around the world in true swashbuckling style with the latest edition of their series of unprecedented and unpredictable adventures. New Years
14
2017 saw the launch of the January Rickshaw Run. Eighty four teams thundered along the Indian subcontinent from Cochin to Jaisalmer with only two weeks to make it. Their prize is inclusion into a noble and eclectic group - the Rickshaw Run Veterans. Starting in the tropics of Kerala and driving north to the Rajasthani desert, this adventure pits people from around the world against the wild landscape of India - all in the most illogical vehicle possible, the autorickshaw. In essence, the humble rickshaw is not a very good idea. It’s not very fast, it smells, it falls over when you go round corners and it breaks downs more often than an emo teenager; but somehow all this makes them better. With the Arabian Sea to your left and the Western
Ghats to your right, the only route is the one that gets you from the start to the finish and anything else in-between. The entrance fee to the adventure not only includes full use of the tuktuk, but also three days of test driving, a day of vehicle maintenance and repair, a snazzy pimp job, and some chunky emergency insurance in case you’ve had wax in your ears during those few days. The Adventurists know how to throw a decent shindig too, so each end of the adventure is capped with a cricket match against a local team plus a ginormous blowout with all the other teams. Teams are comprised of up to three people meaning the adventure could cost just under £550 per person to enter. Teams are also required to raise a minimum of £500 for
The Adventurists’ partner charity Cool Earth, along with £500 for a charity of their choice. So far the Rickshaw Run has raised nearly £2,000,000 for charities across the globe. The January Rickshaw Run launched on January 2nd and the finish-line party will be held on January 15th 2017, falling conveniently around the New Year’s holiday period for those outside of India. Inside of India, it offers a great way to break up a trip and a novel method of traversing one of the most culturally and geographically diverse countries on the planet. Team Hardy Leather Lips before embarking on the January Run said, “Zero planning done, bag packed last minute, flight in a few hours”. It awaits to be seen if their knack for lack of preparation will suit them in India.

Taiwan Lantern Festival
The bright and beautiful Taiwan Lantern Festival! Taiwan’s Lantern Festival is an occasion to celebrate with family and friends
T
he most celebrated festival of Taiwan –Lantern Festival will be held from 11 February to 19 February in 2017. Like Indians, the Taiwanese also celebrate festivals with fervour and festivities and it’s the best time for family and friends to get together and celebrate!
The Taipei Lantern Festival is held for several days at the Taipei Expo Park, reaching its peak on the day of the Lantern Festival itself. There are many traditional lanterns, electromechanical lantern displays, and large themed lanterns sponsored and designed by different companies.
Taiwan located in the western Pacific Ocean 160 km (100 miles) off the southeastern coast of the Chinese mainland is a convenient gateway to Asia for the Indian traveller. A number of airlines such as China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Southern and Thai Airways fly directly or with a stopover in to Taipei’s an International Airport from the Indian metros of New Delhi and Mumbai. The average flight time between India and Taiwan is of about 6.5 hours; and Taiwan is 2.30 hours ahead of India.
The Kaohsiung Lantern Festival is held along the Love River. During the festival period, both sides of the river as well as Wufu Rd., Heping Rd., Guangzhou St., and other thoroughfares have lantern exhibitions. There are also musical performances, helping to throw the whole city into a festive mood.
The festival is held across Taiwan in different cities every year like Taipei, Kaohsiung, Pingxi and Yenshui.
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is one of the most colourful activities of the Lantern Festival. Pingxi is a remote hillside town. In the past, those who worked or farmed in the mountains faced the risk of being robbed or killed, and they used lanterns to inform their families they were safe. The lanterns do not function as signals anymore,
but are now used as symbols of peace and good fortune.
Origin of Lantern Festival The Lantern Festival is an ancient Chinese tradition that dates back more than 2,000-years. The origin of the festival lies in the festive activities of an agricultural people celebrating the lengthening of daylight hours and the coming of spring after the New Year. The festival was actually started by an emperor of the Han dynasty (206 B.C. – 220 A.D.), who was a devout Buddhist and who ordered his people to display lights on the fifteenth night of the first month of the lunar year to pay respects to Buddha. Holding torches or lanterns on this night makes it easier to see deities descending from heaven to give blessings to the earth. During the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD), the emperors would celebrate the festival by ordering hundreds of beautiful women to sing and dance with lanterns in the brightly lit plaza. These festive activities gradually spread to the common people and developed into the most popular festival in the year after Chinese New Year. The festival is also called the Little New Year. In 1990, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau held the first Taipei Lantern Festival. Every year a gigantic lantern is installed in the middle of the plaza of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The lantern installation is followed by performances
16
like laser lights, music and sculptural arts. On the four sides of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, smaller lantern installations depict folklore and historical events. You can also find interesting live folk performances such as lion and dragon dances, acrobatic acts, folk art skits, mock battles, and booths that demonstrate and sell traditional handicrafts such as fan painting, lantern making, dough sculpture, candy-figure blowing, paper cutting, Chinese knot work, and many delicious snacks and sweets. During the festival period, a tunnel of lights is put up on the roads of Taipei, dressing up the whole city with glittering lights. Several media outlets and travel lists have recommended the Taiwan Lantern Festival as one of the best holiday celebration events. It has emerged as an international event, attracting tens and thousands of visitors from all over the world. Visit Taiwan during the Lantern Festival for a celebration like no other! The Taiwan Tourism Bureau is encouraging visitors to attend the 2017 Taiwan Lantern Festival (February 11-19, 2017) in Yunlin and Lantern Festival activities in other cities and counties. The Bureau has announced several offers for independent as well as family / group travellers during the occasion of Lantern Festival.

Surfing above the clouds: Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines going online on short haul and mid-range flights too Send emails from a height of 10,000 meters, do your online shopping while soaring over the Alps, stream videos above the clouds - and all of that with broadband quality. Soon, passengers of Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines will be able to go online on shorter journeys too - as they have already been able to do for some time on long haul flights. Last summer, Lufthansa received the so-called Supplemental Type Certificate for the Airbus fleet A320 from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and successfully concluded all the necessary preparation work. Now the next stage of testing on Lufthansa and Austrian routes will start, initially involving five aircraft in each case. Passengers who fly on these aircraft will be offered free Internet use during this test phase. The analysis of the user behaviour will provide the data necessary to further enhance the service ahead of its market launch. Harry Hohmeister, member of the Board of Directors of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and responsible for Hub Management, says “I am pleased that we can soon offer broadband Internet to our passengers on inner-European flights, giving them the chance to have a seamless digital experience. Since the launch of Lufthansa Flynet, it has been our goal to offer added value on board to our customers through
22
innovation - and that also includes our Internet provision”. In the first quarter of 2017, the number of Lufthansa aircraft fitted out with Internet access will rise to around 20. One by one, the entire Lufthansa A320 fleet is to be equipped with the latest advanced technology by the middle of 2018. The re-fitting of all 31 aircraft at Austrian Airlines is planned to be completed before the end of April 2017. As well as Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines, Eurowings also has plans to bring the Internet on board its aircraft – estimated launch is to be by the end of the first quarter 2017. A total of 69 Eurowings aircraft are to be fitted with the systems by the summer of 2017. Lufthansa passengers can gain Wifi access to the Internet using their own mobile devices. As well as email services, applications such as video streaming will be possible too. Market launch of the new service is scheduled to take place sometime during the first quarter of the year. Customers will then be able to choose between three different service packages FlyNet Message for EUR 3, FlyNet Surf for EUR 7 and FlyNet Stream for EUR 12 per flight. Whilst FlyNet Message only allows the use of messaging services such as email, WhatsApp or iMessage, FlyNet Surf also enables passengers to surf the Internet. With the FlyNet Stream service package, streaming is also possible. The packages can
be paid for by credit card or via payment services such as Paypal. The Internet service of Lufthansa Airlines and their technology partner Inmarsat uses the latest broadband satellite technology (Ka-band) and provides seamless, reliable coverage on short haul and mid-range flights via the Inmarsat network Global Xpress (GX). Inmarsat partner Deutsche Telekom will be the Internet Service Provider for Lufthansa passengers. Lufthansa Technik is responsible for the fitting of all the systems and components, as well as dealing with the required Aviation regulations and other statutory authorisations. They are fitting out the entire Airbus A320 family of the Lufthansa Group Airlines with the latest Ka-band satellite technology. By spring, almost 100 aircraft are scheduled to have been equipped. The aircraft can be fitted with the required antennae and routers on a series of ten production lines, working simultaneously, at the Lufthansa Technik sites. On account of the only minimally-invasive adjustments needed to the aircraft structure, the rapid re-fitting of even large fleets is possible - generally involving just four days downtime per aircraft.
Lufthansa Systems is providing the necessary technical infrastructure for Internet connection on board. This includes the network operations in the aircraft - the technical prerequisite for Wifi on board - as well as the provision of the necessary software for the operation of the FlyNet portal, through which the customer gains access to the net. Within the framework of their global partnership, Lufthansa Systems and Lufthansa Technik are in addition providing a modern, multifunctional digital platform (BoardConnect) to enable digital use cases ranging from entertainment to ancillary revenues. Both Lufthansa Group Airlines and external customers will profit from this strong cooperation arrangement. As long ago as 15 January, 2003, Lufthansa was the operator of the first commercial long haul flight worldwide to have broadband Internet access. The service had to be taken off the market in 2006 despite its technically reliable system and its growing popularity with passengers, because the necessary “Connexion by Boeing” satellites ceased operations. Since the end of 2010, Lufthansa has again been offering broadband Internet access on its intercontinental flights - once again as worldwide first.
