hen Kerala decided to explore the potential of ecotourism, the state was a pioneer in the sector within the country. With unexplored beaches, tranquil backwaters, pristine valleys and hills, exotic species of rare flora and fauna, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, enchanting art forms, festivals and cultural monuments, the state had the potential to become a top-class ecotourism destination. The State tourism department even set up a separate ecotourism wing to give policy support for the development of the ecotourism destinations in the state. As many as 56 places were earmarked to be developed as ecotourism destinations, with Thenmala becoming the country’s first planned ecotourism destination. But the recent report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) should act as an eye-opener to both the industry and the government. The ecotourism projects of the state which were launched with a lot of fanfare, are not delivering the desired results. The report points to the lack of proper planning, coordination, and lackadaisical approach from the part of the authorities as the main reasons for the sad state of affairs. This comes at a time when the government is planning more centers with an increased budget allocation of Rs 8.2 crore. According to the report, lack of online booking facilities, safari vehicles with trained drivers and other basic amenities, a reduced tariff during off seasons, and required publicity has resulted in declining visitor flow to all major ecotourism centres. The failure to introduce a flexible tariff system by extending nominal tariff reduction during the off-season (April–September) has also affected the plans adversely. Not getting prior approval from the Centre’s Ministry of Environment and Forest has also affected the development of destinations. With another tourist season about to peak in a couple of months’ time and the KTM around the corner, this is high time for all stakeholders to put their heads together and look for a solution to this issue, which, if left unattended, could play spoilsport.

Ayurvedic Healing in Kochi
I
t’s the time of the year again when Malayalis pack their bags and head to their favourite Ayurvedic centres for treatments that will prolong their much beloved lives. Since the days of yore, the Malayalam month, Karkidakam (between July 16 and August 16), has been the time when Malayalis head for special Ayurvedic treatments.
According to Ayurveda, Karkidakam is an important period for treatments, as
it affects the tri-doshas in different ways. During the summer season, preceding the monsoons, Vata tends to accumulate in the human body. The peculiar behaviour of Vata is its capability to aggravate any disease in the body, and can also cause new diseases. So, this time of the year is best to undergo Ayurvedic treatments that will basically decrease the Vata in your body. Some of the other reasons why Karkidakam is
the best time for treatments is: first, the body is more receptive to medicines during this time. So, if you have been considering getting yourself a full scale Ayurvedic treatment, this is the best time to do it. Second, during the highly humid monsoon season, the pores of the body are open to their fullest and hence, can easily absorb all the oils, poultices and concoctions applied on them. Also, Karkidakam is the
time when the monsoons are at their heaviest and the constant rains reduces temperature, which brings with it a damp environment, the chills, and also a host of waterborne diseases. The three doshas: Vata, Pitha, and Kapha, are thrown off balance leaving the body susceptible to pathogens. Hence, it is wise to resort to Ayurveda to strengthen the body against infections and be prepared to ward off illnesses with preventive measures.
Some of the treatments for this season include: Abhyangam: A synchronized
oil massage performed by two people that is both relaxing and comforting. Pizhichil: A continuous
stream of lukewarm medicated oil is poured and simultaneously massaged over the full body. Ilakkizhi: A technique in which a heated cloth bag
containing herbal leaves is softly punched on the affected area. Choorna Swedam: Similar to Ilakkizhi, except that instead of leaves, herbal powders are used. Mathra Vasthy or Kashaya Vasthy: Enemas that remove
toxins from the body and therefore, purify it.
Some of the places offering this unique treatment include: • • • •
Carnoustie Ayurveda & Wellness Resort at Alappuzha. Nattika Beach Ayurveda Resort at Thrissur. Arya Vaidya Sala, Ayurvedic Hospital & Research Centre at Thrikkakara. Fort Ayurveda at Hotel Fort House, Fort Cochin.

Old Kochi loosely refers to a group of islands consisting of Willingdon Island, Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, etc. Now, it includes Ernakulam city, old parts of Kochi, Kumbalangi, and outlying islands. It is one of the principal tourist destinations of Kerala.

Jewish Synagogue, Fort Kochi One cannot find a better place than Fort Kochi to explore the rich and diverse culture of the city. Also knows ad the Paradesi Synagogue, it is the oldest active synagogue in
the Commonwealth of Nations. Constructed in 1567, it is one of seven synagogues of the Malabar Yehudan or Yehudan Mappila people or Cochin Jewish community in

it was built by Sephardic or Spanish-speaking Jews, some of them from families exiled in Aleppo, Safed and other West Asian localities. It is also referred to as the ‘Cochin Jewish Synagogue’ or the ‘Mattancherry Synagogue’. Located in the quarter of Old Cochin known as Jew Town, it is the only one of the seven synagogues in the area still in use. The complex has four buildings. It was built adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace temple on the land given to the Malabari Yehuden or Yehuden Mappila community by the Raja of Kochi, Rama Varma. The Mattancherry Palace temple and the Mattancherry synagogue share a common wall.

with utmost care. The building itself is a piece of wonder with its three floors following the architectural styles of Malabar, Cochin, and Travancore. The entrance to this marvellous structure is constructed from the remnants of a 16th century temple in Tamil Nadu and wooden carvings collected from across Kerala. Pallippuram Fort
The fort in Pallippuram, Vyppin, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala was built by the Portuguese in 1503,
and is the oldest existing European fort in India. The Dutch captured the fort in 1661 and sold it to the Kingdom of Travancore in 1789. The fort is located in the northern extremity of Vypeen Island and is hexagonal in shape, a form popularly known as ayikkotta or ‘alikotta’. The fort is constructed using laterite, chunam, and wood, etc. The walls are thickly plastered using mortar. The doorway in the central circular slab is made of granite. All the six sides of the fort are overgrown with vegetation.

People from all parts of Kerala and outside, irrespective of caste or creed go to the church to seek the blessings of Mary, the mother of Jesus, popularly known as “Vallarpadathamma”. This is an ancient Christian Church built in 1524. Portuguese merchants headed by Vasco da Gama enthroned this miraculous picture of Our lady of Ransom at the shrine. The church was dedicated to the holy spirit, which was the first of its kind in Asia. The beautiful church was however destroyed by a heavy flood in 1676. The

church was re-established in 1676 and the famous picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected by Portuguese, who brought it from their native land. The picture is believed to have miraculous powers. The Portuguese built the first church on the site of the present church in 1524. It was destroyed in a flood in the late 17th century and a new church was built on the same spot in 1676. It was declared a special church by Pope Leo XIII in 1888, and in 1951 the Union Government declared it a major pilgrim centre.
Puthuvype Beach
One of the less visited but yet very beautiful beach is the Puthuvype beach. This beach has not been developed for tourism and
the local administration is making a lot of efforts to promote this place as an alternative to Cherai Beach, being a suburb of the city of Kochi. A lighthouse is also situated less than half a kilometer away from the beach, hence, this beach is locally known as the ‘Lighthouse Beach’. This lighthouse is one of the tallest in India.
Bolgatty Palace
It is a former palace built by the Dutch in India, located on the island popularly known as Bolgatty Island in Kochi. the Governor’s palace for the commander of Dutch Malabar, and later in 1909, was leased to the British. It then served as the home of the British Governors, being the seat of the British Resident of Cochin during the British Raj. The palace became the property of the state after independence, and was later converted into a heritage hotel resort. It now has a swimming pool, 9-hole golf course, ayurvedic centre and daily Kathakali performances, and is a holiday destination for Indian and overseas tourists. There is also a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is the first of its kind in Kerala. Located on the eastern coast of Bolgatty Island in the Bolgatty palace Heritage Hotel is India’s only international marina: the Kochi International Marina. Managed by KTDC, it provides berthing facility for 34 yachts and also offers services like water, electricity and sewage pump-outs. Hogenakkal Falls The Niagara of India in the world.
Dr. S. Bakthavatchalam Additional Director, Tamil Nadu Tourism
H
ogenakkal Falls or Hogenakal Falls is a waterfall in South India on the river Kaveri. It is located in the Dharmapuri district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, about 180 km from Bengaluru and 46 km from Dharmapuri town. It is popularly known as the ‘Niagara of India’. With its fame for medicinal baths and hide boat rides, it is a major site of tourist attraction. Carbonatite rocks in this site are considered to be the oldest of its kind in South Asia, and one of the oldest
18
Hogenakkal waterfalls, often referred to as ‘Cauvery’ or ‘Kaveri’ by the locals, offers an exciting holiday destination for Indians and foreigners alike. It is located about 750 feet above sea level amidst the Melagiri Hills. The route to Hogenakkal falls is scenic, with lush mulberry fields and giant terracotta guardian deities (Aiyanars). As
you approach the place, the roar of the Kaveri river and the abundance of vegetation in the area is sure to catch your attention. Hogenakkal is a beautiful place with picturesque scenes. The cascading beauty that goes by the name of ‘Hogenakkal falls’, is located on the Tamil NaduKarnataka border. Though a year round destination, Hogenakkal waterfalls has
a different character just after the rains. The area looks lush green, and there are a number of waterfalls that you may come across. Hogenakkal is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful tourist destinations. The broad stream of the river Kaveri gets forked at this point, forming an island from where one stream continues on while it plunges into a deep chasm
At Hogenakkal, the Kaveri river drops and creates numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain. In some places where the water falls as much as 20 m, it is said to sound like continual thunder. Soon after the falls, the river takes a southerly course and enters the Mettur reservoir. The river carries sediment which makes the ‘down river’ land fertile. At Hogenakkal, the river spreads out over a wide area of sandy beaches, then flows through to the Mettur dam and creates a 60 sq m lake called Stanley Reservoir. Built in 1934, this project improved irrigation
and provided hydropower. The best season to visit is soon after the monsoons, when the river is in full spate. But, some tourists prefer to visit during offseason to skip the crowd. A trip to Hogenakkal mainly revolves around the fall and the river. Waterfalls here fall from a height of 60 to 1000 ft. A boat ride here is a thrilling activity and a good way to get a slice of adventure. Rides are taken on the coracles, the round small boats that are locally known as ‘Parisals’. These are made from watertight hides stretched over lightweight wicker frames. July 2016 | ASIAN TRAVELLER

Boating at Hogenakkal.
It is assured that it will be a spectacular experience for the travellers. Don’t be surprised when a boatman asks you for Rs. 500 to take you on a coracle ride. Heavy bargaining is recommended. Another exciting attraction at the Hogenakkal waterfalls is the diving skills of local kids, who would dive for a fee. They can dive from a height of around 30 feet and climb straight up back on the rocks in no time. And the fee can range from 5 to 10 rupees. Hogenakkal waterfall is an awe-inspiring picnic spot with its waters
supposed to be having curative powers. Set in thick, green woods, it is considered both a sacred bathing place and a spalike health resort. Here, the water spreads for miles around. The area is surrounded by hills and offers lovely panoramic view. People can take bath in the Kaveri river, before and beyond the falls. Before reaching Hogenakkal, the river flows through a forest which contains herbs that are traditionally believed to enhance health. Hence, bathing in these waters are believed to be curative. At Hogenakkal, the Kaveri river enters the plains and
the river dashing against the rocks is a great sight. Freshly caught fish are sold by the gorge and various vendors selling water and snacks up and down the gorge rowing their parisals is not uncommon. The fish caught include katla, robu, kendai, keluthi, valai, mirgal, aranjan and jilaby. After leaving the gorge, on the left shore, one can find improvised stalls set up on the sand. There, one can let the fresh fishes be prepared in one of the many kitchens. Also, many people can be found swimming or bathing around there. 19

India’s government recently approved a new civil aviation policy for increasing regional connectivity, boosting cargo operations, and encouraging passenger traffic by reducing fares. Civil Aviation Minister, Ashok Gajapathi Raju said, “the policy will help India become the world’s thirdlargest civil aviation market by 2022, behind the U.S. and China.” Raju tweeted after the Cabinet’s approval that it would be ‘a gamechanger for the (aviation) sector’. The aviation policy caps airfares at Rs 2,500 ($37) for a one-hour flight between small towns and cities, and offers incentives to airlines to fly those routes. The government would refund 80 percent of the losses incurred by airlines due to the fare caps. The objective of the new policy was to “make flying affordable, safe and convenient and to promote
balanced regional growth, tourism, infrastructure and ease of doing business,” Raju added. Domestic airlines also would not get government approval before entering international code share agreements with other airlines. The government also threw out an old rule that required airlines to have operated for five years and have at least 20 planes before being able to fly international routes. India’s booming economy and growing middle class have helped to make it the world’s fastestgrowing air travel market. The number of passengers grew 20 percent last year, and airlines are announcing flights to new destinations in the country almost every week. Domestic air passengers are expected to jump from the current 70 million to 300 million by 2022, and to 500 million by 2027.

Thailand appoints Anusha Dandekar as Brand Ambassador; trains focus on ‘girly getaway’ segment
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched a campaign to target women travellers. TAT is keen that the destination – already famous as India’s favourite – becomes the premier choice for women travellers when they escape together for short breaks and weekends, bachelorettes, kitty parties and holidays. The tourism board is keen to benefit from the
first-mover advantage and has appointed Anusha Dandekar as its brand ambassador in India. The hip, young Aussieborn Mumbaikar, who many still remember as MTV’s VJ Anusha, was chosen for her inherent love for Thailand Anusha Dandekar. and the fact that she is symbolic of the exact segment that they want to target. “I have been to Thailand over 50 times during my career at MTV Asia – we shot there all the time and I have tried all the food. It is one of my favourite places and despite having visited so many times, it never gets old for me,” Anusha told team TAT in a meeting that cinched the Brand Ambassador deal. Why is Thailand keen
to pioneer destination marketing to the Indian women travellers? Because, it is a perfect fit. According to a study conducted by Thomas Cook earlier this year, 70% of women today prefer to travel with friends versus family. Moreover, many studies have indicated that culture, cuisine, spa and amp, wellness and shopping are the interests of these women travellers. They have also been shown to prefer to travel without a tour manager and correspondingly prefer safe, easy to navigate destinations. Thus, Thailand emerges as the perfect choice and the best fit for this segment because it meets all these needs effectively. Indian women travellers for most part will be familiar with Thailand as most of them would have visited previously. From a long-term standpoint as well, focusing on women makes perfect sense because overall travel
buying decisions are also increasingly shown to be taken by the woman of the house. Various studies conducted in India globally show that 70-80% of holiday decisions are taken by women. TAT believes that positive experiences in Thailand will lead women travellers to choose Thailand more often also for a family holiday in the future. Moreover, studies indicate that the segment is ripe with potential: An Amadeus study has indicated that between 2011 and through 2020, the women traveller’s segment would have grown by an astounding 891%! Anusha Dandekar visited Thailand for the destination’s TVC shoot and essentially experienced the thrills of a girly getaway in Thailand. She and the tourism board will be showcasing her adventures during the trip on social media besides traditional platforms for publicity.
