he recent attack on tourists in Barcelona has once again made ‘tourism-phobia’ a debating point. As World Tourism Organisation Secretary General Taleb Rifai has pointed out in an article, there are reports from all over the world about “citizens protesting against the ‘invasion of tourists’ and the expulsion of locals by tourism businesses”. The rise in anti-tourist sentiment is “a very serious situation that needs to be addressed in a serious way,” he said. Tourism, despite being a relatively new economic activity, generates 10% of the world’s GDP and accounts for one in every 10 jobs and 30% of world trade in services, reveals a UNWTO document. It is key to the economic well-being of many societies. That is one reason why United Nations declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. But, what the stakeholders should always bear in mind is that “growth come with responsibility”. According to UNWTO, “a sustainable tourism sector is one that promotes environmental preservation and protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.” But, more importantly, “it [should] promote engagement, commitment, and respect for local communities.” ‘Tourism-phobia’ is created when the players forget this basic rules and take things for granted. Tourism gets affected whenever something goes wrong in the social, political or economic front. But, the industry has shown amazing resilience and bounced back each time. But the current threat, ‘tourism-phobia’, would not be that easy to tackle, if it is as serious as reported. “‘Tourism-phobia’ on the part of citizens is largely a result of the failure to manage the growth in a sustainable manner,” says UNWTO Secretary General. As he rightly points out, it is the failure of management not of the tourism sector. So it is high time the industry stakeholders have a serious and earnest look at how we go about doing our business and make sure that the motto of the campaign of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development – Travel, enjoy and respect is followed in letter and spirit.

Ellora Caves

Ellora Caves located at Aurangabad is one of the largest rock-hewn monastic-temple complexes in the entire world. It also houses the largest single monolithic excavation in the world, the great Kailasa (Cave 16). Ellora was an important commercial

center in the past. The different caves also served as monasteries for monks, temples for prayers and a place for pilgrims to rest. The crowded tourists during the monsoon are the proof of its wide popularity. With the rains, the area blooms with lush green and small streams and waterfalls. The Ellora caves, unlike Ajanta, have a distinction that they were never lost to oblivion, due to their close proximity to the trade route. There have been numerous written records to indicate that these caves were visited regularly by enthused travellers and royal personages as well. It has got references in an Arab geographer Al-Mas‘udi’s writings as back as 10th century A.D. In 1352 A.D. the approach roads to the caves were repaired on the ensuing visit of Sultan Hasan Gangu Bahmani, who also camped at the site and visited the caves.

Buddhist religion while caves 13-29 and 30-34 represent Hindu and Jain religion respectively. All monuments are considered to be built during Hindu dynasties. A tourist can plan the visit of these caves according to the time available and depending upon the interest in ancient art. To get a glimpse of the representative art of Buddhism, Brahmanism and Jainism, tourists can visit Cave nos. 10 (Visvakarma Cave), 16 (Kailasa), 21 (Ramesvara) and 32 & 34 (Jaina group of caves) which usually takes about three to four hours. Cave nos. 2, 5, 10 & 12 of the Buddhist group; Cave nos. 14, 15, 16, 21 & 29 of the Brahmanical group and Caves 32 to 34 of the Jaina group will take an entire day to cover.

Ajanta Caves

With the next year marking 200 years of discovery of the World Heritage Ajanta Caves by British officer John Smith, Maharashtra is all set to celebrate the occasion. Even before, the cave was well known to the villagers nearby. But with John

Smith, it captured the attention of the western world. Located 60 kms from Jalgaon, Aurangabad, it has about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating back to 2nd century BC. The caves are famous for its murals, the finest surviving examples of Indian mural painting. The caves are located on the side of a rocky cliff that is on side of the small river. There are a number of waterfalls which adds beauty to the place. The caves located here can be chronologically divided into two phases viz. the early Buddhist caves of 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE and the

It was originally meant to be a secluded place in which to walk, and referred to dwellings or refuges used by wandering monks during the rainy season. It is considered that most of the donors at Ajanta, especially of the earlier caves, were traders. The site received support from the mightiest donor during its second phase and that was the royal patronage of the Vakatakas. There are

more than 100 inscribed and painted inscriptions narrating stories of these donors that also included monks, kings, ministers, and others. Ajanta is known for its narrative murals based on Buddhist themes like life scenes from the Buddha, Avadana stories of Bodhisattva, Jataka stories and panels based on Mahayana themes from Vipulya Sutras. Ajanta Caves were declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1983.

Lonar Crater

What will remain if a meteor weighing 1 million ton crashed into earth? Lonar, a town in Buldhana district of Vidarbha, 160 kms from Aurangabad is where you must go to find the remains of such a crash many years ago. It is believed that the lake Lonar Crater is formed due to one such meteor crashing down to earth. Lonar Crater is

one among the world’s five largest craters and thirdlargest salt water lake in the world. The perfectly round basin-like structure with definite edges, the common characteristic of volcanic origin was seen for Lonar Crater. But further researches proved that it was the impact of a meteor. The typical glassy material found around the crater according to them was created due to the heat generated by meteor impact. The lake has got many reference in the texts written by Valmiki Ramayan, epic poet Kalidas and a mention in ‘Ain-eAkbari’ authored during the later Mughal period. They referred it as Panchapsar owing to the presence of five different streams that feed the lake. The magnificent temples Daitya Sudan Mandir, the Shankar-Ganesh Mandir and Wagh-Mahadev Mandir still have some of the finest sculptures and the impressive architectural sensibilities that were prevalent during those times. The old architectural style called Hemadpanthi style which doesn’t use cementing agents for construction. Monkeys and peacocks can be sighted here in abundance. ASIAN TRAVELLER | August 2017

Alappuzha boat race

Every year on the second Saturday of August, the serene waters of the Punnamada Lake witness majestic snake boats racing across the waters to the rhythmic notes of boat songs

The allure of Alleppey

I

t was in 1952. India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alappuzha. He took a ride in boat from Kottayam to Alappuzha through water logged Kuttanad. Several boats including snake boats accompanied him on the trip. They conducted a race of snake boats even though it was not very properly planned. But the sight of oarsmen on the snake boats thrilled him. He was so excited that he jumped on to the snake boat which secured the first prize and the boat proceeded to the boat jetty carrying the Prime

12

Minister. Upon his return, in December the same year something came in search of winners of that snake boat race. It was a silver trophy which had a replica of a snake boat placed on a wooden abacus and an inscription: “To the winners of the boat race which is a unique feature of community life in Travancore-Cochin.” This trophy later came to known as Nehru Trophy and in fond memory of great Panditiji, each year Nehru Trophy Boat Race is celebrated. Even though Snake

Boat (Chundan Vallam) race is the most exciting race, there are also other categories of boats which participate in various events of the race like Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam. Only wooden boats are allowed to take part in the race. There is a separate race for Women in Churulan Vallam. The snake boats measuring over 100 ft in length with a raised prow is a majestic sight. But little do people know

ASIAN TRAVELLER | August 2017

about the preparations behind it. Preparations are large for boat race as winning the race is associated with the pride of each village. The cost to construct a new snake boat ranges from Rs.10 lakh to Rs.35 lakh. Under the chief boat craftsman, they will go in search for the right ‘Anjili’ tree. Even 2 or 3 months before the race, preparations begin to find the oarsmen. The village elders or the past oarsmen select the team for each year. They select 150 oarsmen depending on their stamina, speed and how well they get along with other team members. A camp will be set up for these oarsmen with special food so as to keep them in good shape. The camp will also have Yoga, physical training and rowing practise. The rowing practise begins with stationed wooden pieces in water and oarsmen

August | ASIAN TRAVELLER

rehearsing and practising on them. Usually the village raises money from all homes to run the camps. On race day, the boats will undergo a special treatment- polish with sardine oil. They believe it will help the boat to slide

He was so excited that he jumped on to the snake boat which secured the first prize and the boat proceeded to the boat jetty carrying the Prime Minister effortlessly through water. Each snake boat has got 120 muscular oarsmen including a captain, 3 helmsman and 20-25 singers to unite the team members and to keep them in rhythm while rowing. Recent amendments have set to limit the number of oarsmen to 95 in each snake boat even though

there is still no uniformity in the size of the boats. The end of the boat curves to a height of 10-15 ft and oarsmen there control the course of the boat with long oars. The story behind the Chundan Vallam is that in the past, the rival kings of Kayamkulam and Chempakassery (places near to Alappuzha) were at war. The battles were fought on boats along the canals of the backwaters. During one such battle Chempakassery King was defeated and to seek revenge next time, the King ordered his Chief Assari (Craftsman) to design a sleek battle vessel which could move faster and also provision to fire cannons. He even invited boat architects from his land to design and build faster boats for the troops. Koduppunna Venkitanarayanan, a wellknown boat architect of the region came up with a design. It had speed, manoeuvrability and

capacity to carry 100 ablebodied warriors on board. The best thing was its eel-like construction ideal for launching an ambush since it could be easily kept concealed behind the overhanging bushes on the river banks. Kings and colonial rulers are long gone now, but the love to snake boats for the people of Alappuzha never diminished. Other than any means of transport, the people living in the banks of backwaters of Alappuzha will have a vallam as their own. To a community associated so much with boats, the love for boat races is quite natural. The huge crowds gathering on the banks of Punnamada Lake cheering their team is a sight to behold. There are even people who swim in the backwaters cheering up their favourite team. It is nothing else, but unadulterated love.

Woman of the month

Tete-a-tete with Maulina Gupta It seems you have, over the years, established yourself in the hospitality industry. What attracted you to this business segment and how has been the journey so far? For me, hospitality actually happened accidentally. I was still in college when I got selected to do my Post Graduate Diploma with the Taj Group of Hotels. I am quite lucky and blessed having worked with the Taj Group of Hotels, Starwood and Hyatt. The journey has been great because I have been seeing a steady growth over the years and in that growth, I have also explored many hotels, many kinds of brands, many destinations, so there has never been a dull moment. What are your plans and changes you will implement in your organisation to attract tourists/customers?

Maulina Gupta, General Manager, Hyatt Place Gurgaon/Udyog Vihar, the recipient of the ‘Most Admired GM of the Year Award’ at National Awards for Excellence in Hotel Industry 2017 is all happy about her experiences in hospitality industry spanning 20 years with many hotel groups and various destinations

16

We as hoteliers are changing. The pace at which our guests and customers are changing is mind blowing. I think today, in reality, all our plans are typically short term and mid-term and anticipating this change. We ensure that we get our basics right, making sure we do everything we possibly can to create personal connect with our guests which has been the mantra for hospitality but it continues to be a strong focus and really focussing on the experience rather than the product.

My hotel per se is a select service business hotel. It doesn’t have the fancy elements that you would find in a luxury hotel but I think, even in my hotel, we have ample opportunity to create wonderful experiences for our guests, personal connect and the fact that almost 40% of our guests are repeat guests goes to show that we must be doing something right. Brief us about your first assignment in the hospitality industry? My first assignment was at the Taj Palace, New Delhi and I chose to be a part of Events which is actually the forte of Taj Palace and has been for years and I was quite in the thick of it for about two and a half years that I was in that hotel and it gave me a lot of exposure, gave me lots of learning and I understood the value of teamwork and support and how it can lead to success. Having been in the industry for quite some time, you will surely be having some great moments of glory. Do you mind sharing them? For me, my moments of glory are extremely spontaneous and ongoing. I do try to celebrate as and when I can with my team. I have been part of big changes at the Taj Palace itself when I was there, I was at the Rambagh Jaipur when it started undergoing its renovation, I was in Taj Bengal in Events when

we were on the top 2-3 hotels of the company in terms of the revenue so there was huge sense of achievement. I set up the entire Convention Services & Event Planning Department at the Hyatt Regency Delhi which till date handles phenomenally high profile and large conferences. I have two pre-opening hotels under my belt – The Westin Gurgaon which is one of the leading hotels in Gurgaon and the Hyatt Regency Gurgaon which is the largest MICE hotel in the northern region. Like I said, glory is where you look for it and I have been blessed with a lot of opportunities. Being a woman, what were the hurdles you faced from the industry? I know that women do face challenges whether they work in IT sector, financial sector or even the hospitality sector. As an industry, we still have a long way to go before we can really make it seamless for women to grow in the industry and do well. Having said that, we have already come a long way because we have fantastic women leaders now at the helm of hotels and at strategic positions in not only Hyatt but other hotel companies. But it is a matter of fact that as women progress in their careers, there is a huge dropout. And if you look at the percentage of women up to leadership team and then a department head and as they move to a leadership team, there is a massive drop and I strongly feel

ASIAN TRAVELLER | August 2017

that it is an opportunity for all companies to focus on because you would not want to lose out on good talent, enthusiasm just because we are not able to support the social and personal aspirations of women which whether we like it or not are very strong and demanding in our society. Somewhere I feel, the industry is still very traditional and there is that old boys club and it is not easy to break into that club but I’d like to say that it is work in progress. How do you rate your career success so far? I am very happy. I think it is a rat race and there is no end to it. I think it is very important to pace yourself with your own aspirations. I don’t like to constantly benchmark myself against my colleagues, friends or peers because I will always bring something to the table that somebody cannot and I’ll not be able to bring

August | ASIAN TRAVELLER

something that my colleague can, so I’m aware of that. If I’m able to do better than last year, if I’m able to learn and deliver something more this year than last year, I think I’m happy. From the career point of view, isn’t a job in the tourism sector very challenging? Tell us from your experience how you have handled demanding situations with calm and dignity? Yes, it is challenging and demanding purely because there is a very high emotional element in our industry which is not necessarily the case in a financial which is a number driven sector or a product which is a very specification driven sector. Ours has got a huge emotional element and handling emotions is not easy at all. The same experience can have very diverse impacts on different guests depending on their emotional state of mind, on

Somewhere I feel, the industry is still very traditional and there is that old boys club and it is not easy to break into that club but I’d like to say that it is work in progress their expectations. There is no cookie cutter solution or there is no magic wand to handle this, the only way is to live up to the empathy which is also a core value of Hyatt. Listen to the guest, truly try and understand where he/ she is coming from and then genuinely do the best you can with the resources that you have. Give them that due attention, don’t do a halfbaked job because people see that and I think if you can do these three things, I think you can handle more or less anything. Who is the most influential person in your life? My immediate family as

I’m sure is the case with many people. My father, I work a lot like I have seen him work; he was in the Indian Navy. Understanding the human aspect, I look at my mother for that. The biggest inspiration for me is my son. He is my purpose of my life so everything I do is centred on him. How special is the family for you? I don’t have a personal side or a professional side. It is all jumbled into one. My family is part of my work and my work is part of my family and that is how I’m able to balance my work and my life. Your future aspirations and plans To be a successful General Manager for this hotel and for my future hotels. There is a lot more to learn and it can only be learned only through experience since it is nowhere in the books. So I want to live through those experiences and then I will take it as it comes.

Kayaking

for a Cause in Kerala

An event with a difference! Chaliyar River Challenge 2017 is an example for how an event can raise awareness in people about river pollution, conservation of rivers and raising funds to clean up them

“C

haliyar River Challenge 2017” is the third annual event to help raise both awareness and funding to clean up the rivers. Held this year from September 22nd to September 24th the 68 km paddling event promotes the usage of our rivers for recreational usage and create a connection to the river with youngsters and tourists. The starting point of the event is from Nilambur, located on the foothills of Western Ghats and close proximity to Nilgiris. The ending point is at Beypore in Kozhikode district, where the river meets with the Arabian Sea. The three day adventure, a “leave no trace” camping concept offers opportunities at various levels from beginners, non swimmers to well established water sports enthusiasts. Leave No Trace refers to a set of outdoor ethics promoting conservation in the outdoors. It is built on seven principles: Plan

ahead and prepare, Travel and camp on durable surfaces, Dispose of waste properly, Leave what you find, Minimise campfire impacts, Respect wildlife and Be considerate of other visitors. The event will include camping, bonfire, team activities and healthy tummy authentic Kerala delicacies. On the riverbank at Marina Convention Centre in Kozhikode at the end of 68 kms the organisers will host an outdoor music concert. For those on the water for the first time, kayak lessons will be offered on the first day to prepare you for the adventure. Stand up paddlers are also invited to join our SUP contingent. Each participant will be given a one person tent at check in. The team leaders will be around to help out new comers to the world of outdoor activities. The tents will have ecotoilet which is ideal combination of comfort and functionality to accommodate full facilities for everyone who refuses to compromise on comfort and hygiene. Rivers are neglected in our country because we don’t really have any connections with them. We respect them as mothers

18

but forget this relation while throwing industrial waste, domestic waste and other wastes in them. We have forgot or never remembered to take a walk along the side of the river or swim in them because they are too dirty for it. Water adventure sports like rafting take place in hill stations only where water is fresh but as we come towards the plain-land, rivers have reduced to a drain as they are used more for commercial than recreational purposes. Chaliyar was earlier a polluted river from the effluents of nearby factory that destroyed the marine life and caused cancer in the local villagers. Chaliyar Action Committee fought for the cause of river with the support of villagers which resulted in the closure of the factory. Since then the river has come a long way to regain its original beauty and now the organisation of program like Kayak for a cause is helping in creating more awareness about the conservation of river. Architecture wonder Aries Guinness Chundan opened for tourists The longest snake boat in the world displayed at Aries Vismayas Max is the major attraction of Travancore Treasures, an exclusive tour connecting prominent film tourism destinations in Thiruvananthapuram city

A

ries Guinness Chundan, longest steel-made snake boat in Kerala, is all set to enthrall tourists once again. 143.25 ft long Aries Guinness Chundan, built at a cost of Rs.15 lakh in 2006, is reincarnating as a major attraction under the aegis of Indywood Film Tourism, a novel concept to brand India in global tourism map by blending the immense potential of entertainment and tourism. Aries Group Chairman cum CEO Sohan Roy officially inaugurated Aries Guinness Chundan on 31st July at a function held at Aries Vismayas Max studio. Now tourists can experience this architecture wonder displayed at Aries Vismayas Max Studio, previously owned by actor Mohanlal, as part of Travancore Treasures, ambitious project of Indywood Film Tourism, connecting prominent

film tourism destinations in Thiruvananthapuram. Indywood Film Tourism, is an initiative of 10 billion US dollar Project Indywood, promoted by 2000 Indian billionaires and corporates, which aims at elevating Indian Film Industry to global standards.

Visual extravaganza

The eleven-year-old Aries Guinness Chundan, one of the flagship projects from Aries Marine and Engineering Services, stormed into the Guinness Book of World Records for carrying 141 rowers and being the longest, fastest, safest and cheapest ever snake boat made of steel. It was featured in the Limca Book of World Records and Asian Book of Records as the longest steel made snake boat. The snake boat conceived by Naval Architect Sohan Roy became a prominent shooting location for more than hundred movies including Oscar qualified

DAM999, short films, advertisements, music albums etc due to its uncomparable beauty and 24x7 availability.

Punnamada’s pride

The snake boat is a tribute to people of Punnamada, where the famous Nehru Trophy Boat race is conducted. “At that time Punnamada was lacking a snake boat in annual water regatta. Most of the snake boats were from other parts of Alappuzha and the

Aries Group also has the credit of launching Safe Botel, first of its kind, the unsinkable houseboat in India region was ruling the race. As people from Punnamada cannot afford the huge expense of constructing a snake boat and maintain it properly, we decided to build an exclusive snake boat for the citizens of Punnamada without costing anything on its maintenance for more than a decade. And we titled our snake boat as Aries Punnamada Chudan because it was initially operated and managed by the people of Punnamada,” he said.

Setting new track

The entry of Aries Guinness Chundan became a turning point in the history of Kerala Tourism and it could have set new benchmarks in snake boat construction and race if it was not officially banned August | ASIAN TRAVELLER

from taking part in Nehru Trophy Boat Race due to some cheap political reasons eleven years back irrespective of getting full support from High Court. Aries Group also has the credit of launching Safe Botel, first of its kind, the unsinkable houseboat in India. This partially solar powered steel houseboat with eco-friendly features played an instrumental role in framing very strict norms for boats operating in the back waters of Kerala especially emphasising the safety of the passengers.

Array of hurdles

He added that the snake boat was launched surpassing lot of hurdles including lack of local infrastructure facilities at Punnamada, raw materials, trained manpower and approvals. “We faced lot of hurdles during construction. But determination, dedication and unity of our team led by traditional Thachan (carpenter) Babu helped to launch the boat with unique features in record time.”

Uniqueness

Another highlight is ladies can enter this snake boat. Normally ladies are not allowed in traditional snake boats as per Thachan Sastra. “But lot of foreigners including ladies used Aries Guinness Chundan for the first time to experience the beauty of sailing in snake boat and to explore exotic locations in Alappuzha. 19

The Nilgiri Toy Train Dr. S. Bakthavatchalam

This time around Dr. S. Bakthavatchalam, Additional Director, Tamil Nadu Tourism talks about the story and pleasures of the much loved Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Additional Director, Tamil Nadu Tourism

E

stablished in the early 19th century by the British as the summer headquarters of the Chennai government, Ooty now draws tourists wanting to enjoy the pleasures of a hillstation surrounded by Nilgiri mountains. Every traveller visiting Ooty makes it a point to travel in the enchanting Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The rush is so high that the tickets have to be booked months

prior to the journey or else you will not get a chance to travel in this route. Built by the British in 1908, Nilgiri Mountain Train which connects Udhagamndalam and Mettupalayam is 46 km. But to reach there the train goes through 208 serpentine curves, 16 tunnels, 250 bridges, waterfall hood, cliff edges and vast tea estates. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most picturesque toy train journeys in India. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the engine of the toy train X 37389 was built in 1925 at the Swiss Locomotives and Machine Works factory in Switzerland. It was operated 28

between Mettupalayam and Coonoor and was withdrawn from service in 2012. It was replaced with a new oil-fired steam engine in 2012. The total weight of the engine was 50.3 tonne and its hauling capacity was 979 tonne. The engine’s overall dimension was 10380 X 2590 X 3430 mm and its speciality was that it ran on rack and pinion ghat section. Travellers can catch a view of this locomotive

engine at the entrance of the Coimbatore Railway Junction as it has been mounted on a pedestal there. Even when in use, the engine used to change for a more powerful diesel engine at Coonoor to provide greater traction for the steep climb up to Ooty.

and twist and blends through 13 tunnels. After a steep climb, the train enters Coonoor, the little hill station known for its tea plantations. From here, the track is uphill till you reach Fern Hill at a height of 2,218 m, the highest point on the railroad. Shortly before Ooty, the line dips downhill. The numerous twists and turns, the experience of sitting in a train running across tall girder bridges, and over green hills before gently meandering through rolling tea estates will all heal your souls. However the stretch from Metupalaiyam to Coonoor is considered as the most rewarding phase of the journey filled with picturesque scenery. For safety reasons, the

train travels really slow offering travellers enough opportunities to focus their cameras and capture the views around. The proposed heritage walk around some of the important monuments of the Nilgiri Mountain Rail will include a guided tour around the Nilgiri Mountain Railway musuem, locomotive maintenance facility, track maintenance facilities and staff quarters allowing the travellers to know the hardships behind this mountain rail. Already the exclusive museum for the mountain railway at Mettupalayam and the shop selling souvenirs of Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Coonoor are favourite spots for tourists.

The train offers both first class and second class seating. Though there are unreserved tickets at the counters, it sells like hotcakes. Extensive rice fields surround the 7 km stretch between Mettupalayam and Kallar. Soon after is an impressive 21 km section through truly rocky terrain. The track passes over 26 viaducts, ASIAN TRAVELLER | August 2017

Qatar waives entry visa requirements for citizens of 80 countries Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (MoI), Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) and Qatar Airways announced last week that Qatar will allow visa-free entry for citizens of 80 countries, effective immediately. Citizens of those countries* wishing to visit Qatar will no longer need to apply or pay for a visa; instead, a multi-entry waiver will be issued free-of-charge at the port of entry, upon presentation of a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months and a confirmed onward or return ticket. Depending on the nationality of the visitor, the waiver will either be valid for 180 days, from the date of issue, and allow the visitor to spend a total of 90 days in Qatar (multipleentry waiver); or it will be valid for 30 days from the date of issue and entitle the visitor to spend up to 30 days in Qatar with the possibility of applying for an extension of the waiver for an additional 30 days (multipleentry waiver). According to this Indian Nationals will not require prior visa arrangements and can obtain a visa waiver upon arrival in Qatar valid for 30 days. These developments come as part of a series of measures that Qatar has taken to facilitate visitor access to the country. Last month, Qatar launched an e-visa platform, www.qatarvisaservice.com, through which travellers of all nationalities can apply for tourist and visitor visas with more efficiency and ease. The country is also considering further enhancements to its visa policy, such as waiving visa requirements for holders of a residence permit or a valid visa from the nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates), United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the Schengen August | ASIAN TRAVELLER

countries. This waiver would allow eligible visitors to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation by completing a simple online application at least 48 hours prior to travel. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “Today’s announcement places the State of Qatar as the most open country in the region. This is a momentous occasion for Qatar, making the number of nationalities eligible to enter our country without a visa the highest in region, which is something that we are very proud of. “Qatar Airways is the patriotic flag carrier for the State of Qatar and as such we are extremely honoured to bring millions of people each year to our beautiful, welcoming and historic country. This important initiative from the Ministry of Interior and Qatar Tourism Authority will provide an opportunity to welcome even more visitors, from even more countries, to experience the many exciting attractions that await them.” According to Hassan Al Ibrahim, Chief Tourism Development officer at QTA, visa facilitation is a critical component of the national tourism sector strategy, which QTA is currently reviewing in partnership with stakeholders from the public and private sectors. With renewed focus by the country’s leadership on diversifying the national economy, a revised strategy which empowers various players to boost the growth

of tourism is set to be launched on 27 September 2017, when Qatar hosts the official celebrations of World Tourism Day. “Easing entry to Qatar is a key enabler for the growth of Qatar’s tourism industry. With this announcement we are already turning the pages of the Next Chapter of Qatar’s journey towards 2030,” commented Al Ibrahim. “Together with our partners in the public and private sectors, we have examined all of the elements needed to create a smooth and enticing experience that can attract visitors from around the world. There is no doubt that facilitating and streamlining access at all ports of entry are key factors in creating a positive first and lasting impression of Qatar.” Al Ibrahim added, “With 80 countries eligible for a visa waiver, Qatar is now the most open country in the region and we are delighted to invite visitors to discover our renowned hospitality, cultural heritage and natural treasures.” Brigadier Mohammed Al Ateeq, Director General of the Department of Passport and Expatriates Affairs at MoI, commented, “We are very pleased to announce that nationals of 80 countries are now eligible for a visa waiver and can enter Qatar without requiring any prior visa arrangements. Together with our partners at QTA and Qatar Airways, we have been working to enhance our country’s visa policies and implement solutions to better facilitate travel to Qatar.

Further enhancements are being studied and we look forward to announcing them in due course.” In November 2016, Qatar introduced a free transit visa, which allows passengers of all nationalities transiting in Qatar for a minimum of five hours to stay in Qatar for up to 96 hours (four days). In May 2017, QTA launched +Qatar, an initiative to promote the country as a stopover destination, with the national carrier, Qatar Airways. These measures, along with intensified international marketing, have resulted in a 39% increase in the number of stopover visitors during the first six months of 2017, compared with the same period last year. As part of Qatar Airways’ and QTA’s combined efforts to boost tourism in the country, the award-winning airline has accelerated its global expansion plans, and recently announced the launch of a number of new destinations that it is adding to its network by the end of August including Kiev, Ukraine and Prague, Czech Republic. Yesterday, the airline launched Sohar, in the Sultanate of Oman. Qatar Airways also recently launched a direct service to Dublin, Republic of Ireland; Nice, France; and Skopje, connecting even more people to more places, and making it easier than ever for passengers to visit Qatar as part of their journey. *visit www. qatarvisaservice.com to know the complete list of nations. 31

SWISS raises first-half earnings to CHF 200 million Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) generated total revenue of CHF 2.36 billion for the first six months of 2017, a 3% increase on the same period last year (H1 2016: CHF 2.28 billion). First-half earnings before interest and taxes or EBIT amounted to CHF 200 million, a 31% improvement on the prior-year period (H1 2016: CHF 153 million). The substantial EBIT increase is attributable in particular to efficiency gains deriving from the current fleet renewals. First-half earnings were further boosted by larger traffic volumes and resulting higher revenues on both the passenger and the cargo front. SWISS expects to report a full-year EBIT for 2017 that is an improvement on the prior-year result. SWISS has posted strong 2017 first-half results. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) for the period were raised 31% to CHF 200 million (H1 2016: CHF 153

million). The improvement was achieved on total revenue of CHF 2.36 billion, a 3% increase on the prior-year period (H1 2016: CHF 2.28 billion). The positive results trends are attributable above all to efficiency gains deriving from the current modernisation of the SWISS aircraft fleet. The company has now received and deployed nine Boeing 777-300ERs to replace Airbus A340-300s on its long-haul services, and has ten Bombardier C Series aircraft – eight CS100s and two CS300s – in service on its short-haul network, where they have replaced the Avro RJ100. With their state-of-theart engine, systems and materials technologies, the two new aircraft types offer substantially-improved operating economics, which are having a correspondingly positive impact on cost structures. SWISS’s first-

half earnings were also boosted by higher traffic volumes, and thus increased revenues, in both its passenger and its cargo business. Systemwide seat load factor for the first six months of 2017 stood at 80.6%, a 2.1-percentage-point improvement on the prioryear period.

performance, which shows that our investments in our fleet are really reaping their rewards,” says SWISS CEO Thomas Klühr. “To further strengthen our market position,” he continues, “we will continue to consistently develop and refine our products and services both in the air and on the ground, together with our partners in the Lufthansa Group. And we will be working harder than ever to offer our customers the added value they seek from us a premium carrier.” SWISS is confident of offsetting the negative impact of these factors on its earnings results, and expects to report an annual EBIT for 2017.

SWISS saw a continuation of the positive earnings trends of the first quarter of 2017 in the second three months of the year. Secondquarter EBIT amounted to CHF 163 million, a 24% improvement on the prioryear period (Q2 2016: CHF 131 million). Second-quarter revenue was also up 4% at CHF 1.26 billion (Q2 2016: CHF 1.21 billion). “We can be very satisfied with our first-half business

The theme for the Amazing Thailand Pit Stop Hungarian Grand Prix is all about the opportunities that a driving holiday in Thailand offers the more adventurous traveller.

Mr. Martin Méchura, who purchased and drove the Tuk-tuk around Thailand before deciding on a whim to drive it all the way home to Prague, said “I came to Thailand to explore more off-the-beaten track destinations, and this Tuk-tuk allowed me to do just that. Everywhere I went, I was met with smiles and laughter that a ‘farang’ (foreigner) was driving a traditional Thai ‘taxi’. I drove thousands of kilometers throughout Thailand and bar a few mechanical issues, it was one of those

He received a round of applause when he started up the tuktuk after an 18-month hiatus. The appearance of the Thai vehicle at the F1 was to promote the fun of driving in Thailand, as well as underlining the uniqueness of Thai culture and the Thai way of life, which always contain an element of fun and relaxation.
