he various challenges that confronted the tourism sector last year did not deter the people from travelling, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. International tourist arrivals grew by 3.9% to reach a total of 1,235 million as Some 46 million more tourists (overnight visitors) travelled internationally last year compared to 2015, says the data released by UNWTO. As a result, 300 million more international tourists travelled the world in 2016 as compared to the pre-crisis record in 2008. By region, Asia and the Pacific (+8%) led growth in international tourist arrivals in 2016, fuelled by strong demand from both intra- and interregional source markets. “Tourism has shown extraordinary strength and resilience in recent years, despite many challenges, particularly those related to safety and security. Yet, international travel continues to grow strongly and contribute to job creation and the wellbeing of communities around the world”, said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai. Recalling that 2017 has been designated by the United Nations the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, Rifai said “we need to work closer together to harness the contribution of tourism to economic growth, social inclusion, cultural and environmental preservation and mutual understanding, particularly when we live in times with such a deficit of respect and tolerance”. Meanwhile, Kerala has registered a 5.71 per cent increase in tourist arrivals in 2016, welcoming 14.2 million visitors to the state. Though the note-ban has affected the domestic tourist arrivals it did not have a large-scale impact on foreign arrivals it seems. The unique tourism products and innovative marketing strategies helped the state to tide over the difficult phase. Overall it is an optimistic beginning to the new season and let us all work together to keep the momentum going.

World’s leading travel trade show- ITB Berlin 2017 concludes The last word in travel and trade- ITB Berlin 2017 concludes with a positive note on tourism despite the challenges like terrorism and geopolitical controversies

I

TB Berlin 2017 maintains its strong appeal with 26 halls fully booked before the event and with the presence of around 10,000 exhibitors from 184 countries and regions. Botswana was the official partner country and ITB Berlin Convention featured the key topics ‘Safety & Security’ and ’Artificial Intelligence’. The event also had discussions on Medical Tourism and Travel Technology which will continue to bloom in the coming years. As the world’s marketplace and the trendsetter of the global travel industry ITB Berlin once again impressively underlined its standing as the world’s leading travel trade show. International trade visitor numbers increased significantly and at 28,000 delegates (an increase of 7.7 per cent) participation in the 14th ITB Berlin Convention reached a new record. However, at

6

109,000 overall trade visitor numbers were down on last year due to strike action at Berlin’s airports. The event concludes the fact that face-to-face meetings between business partners from around the world have become increasingly important, especially at a time of uncertainty and geopolitical challenges. Digital transition has taken over the business of selling tourism at breathtaking speed. Positive forecasts for the European economy and in particular for Germany as one of the biggest source markets for international tourism have also given the sector a boost. The travel industry’s high expectations for 2017 have been significantly

helped by a resolutely favourable mood among consumers, while unemployment has sunk to historically low figures. One topic that occupied exhibitors and visitors throughout was consumers’ increasing concern for their safety.

They are prepared to adapt to the new situation and bring their personal holiday needs into line with the changes taking place in society. They now carefully think their holiday plans over and afford a great deal of consideration to their personal safety. “

Dr. Christian Göke, CEO of Messe Berlin GmbH: “Even in these uncertain times people refuse to be put off from travelling.

From 8 to 12 March 2017, over the five days of the show, more than 10,000 exhibiting companies from 184 countries and regions

displayed their products and services on 1,092 stands to visitors. The global tourism industry exhibited its latest products and trends on an area covering 160,000 square metres. At the 51st edition of ITB Berlin the number of buyers in a decision-making capacity was impressive. The spotlight was on Botswana as the Official Partner Country of ITB Berlin. On the eve of ITB Berlin Botswana hosted a spectacular opening ceremony, whetting the appetites of the tourism industry for more. With its sustainable tourism, safaris and wildlife conservation projects, its impressive flora and fauna and its rich cultural heritage, this fascinating landlocked

country in the southwest of Africa has positioned itself on the market as one of the most attractive holiday destinations on the African continent. As a green destination in the heart of Europe Slovenia, the Convention & Culture Partner of the show, presented sustainable tourism concepts and a wide range of cultural attractions at ITB Berlin. The digital transformation of the entire industry continues to move forward apace. The eTravel World at ITB Berlin attracted even more international exhibitors March 2017 | ASIAN TRAVELLER

and in particular startups from around the world. The increasing presence of payment system providers also underlined the growing importance of travel technology. Representing a new fast-growing market, Medical Tourism celebrated its debut. Among other exhibiting nations, Turkey, Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, Poland and Belarus provided a concentrated display of information and the latest medical tourism products at the Medical Pavilion. Featuring 200 sessions and 400 speakers over a period of four days, the

ITB Berlin Convention underlined its role as the world’s leading event of its kind. The latest topics ranging from geopolitical crises and catastrophes to artificial intelligence proved to be a fascinating attraction for visitors. 28,000 visitors (2016: 26,000) attended the 14th edition of the ITB Berlin Convention which took place in eight auditoriums on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. According to preliminary figures, on the weekend around 60,000 participants came to find out about the latest trends on the exhibition grounds. As

in previous years, it was possible to book tours directly at ITB Berlin. Even while ITB Berlin 2017 was under way preparations were gathering pace for the next networking event of the international travel industry: ITB China, which is due to be launched in Shanghai, will build on and strengthen ITB’s market position in Asia. From 10 to 12 May some of China’s leading travel companies will be represented at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Conference Center where the display area is already booked up. A new and successful chapter has already been written by Messe Berlin in another part of Asia. Launched ten years ago, ITB Asia, which takes place annually in Singapore, has established itself as the leading B2B event for the Asian travel market. With just under 800 exhibitors from over 70 countries and around 9,650 participants from 110 countries, this trade show and conference

points the way forward for Asia’s tourism industry. Over 5,000 accredited journalists from 76 countries and around 450 bloggers from 34 countries reported on ITB Berlin. Politicians and diplomats from Germany and abroad were present at the show. In addition to 110 delegations, 72 ministers, 11 state secretaries and 45 ambassadors from around the world visited ITB Berlin. The next ITB Berlin will take place from Wednesday, 7 to 11 March 2018. The event was also the venue to announce the 2017 National Geographic World Legacy Awards winners and finalists. Under the category Earth Changers — (recognising cutting-edge leadership in environmentally friendly business practices and green technology, from renewable energy and water conservation to zero-waste systems and carbon-emission reduction), the winner was Cayuga Collection, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Cover Story ITB Berlin 2017 The committee noted that this innovative hotel collection combines stateof-the art sustainability with experiential travel at eight unique properties in Central America. Reduction and monitoring of energy, water, waste, composting, recycling, and other earth-friendly initiatives inspire staff and guests to make green practices part of their own lives. Innovative practices also include eliminating plastic waste (at Cayuga, even drinking straws are reusable bamboo), and guests join popular behindthe-scene tours to learn how sustainability directly touches their vacation experience.

Among the finalists of this category, India also had a presence. Apart from Finch Bay Galapagos Hotel, Ecuador, ITC Hotels, India made it to the final list. Under the category Sense of Place — (recognising excellence in enhancing sense of place and authenticity, including support for the protection of historical monuments, archaeological sites, cultural events, indigenous heritage and artistic traditions), the winner was City of Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. The findings state that the oldest state capital in America considers safeguarding its rich heritage a duty and a passion. The historic downtown and surrounding area protect archaeological sites and cultural authenticity, including the Santa Fe Indian Market, now almost 8

100 years old and still going strong. Santa Fe’s annual festivals and events place Native American, Spanish, and Anglo heritage front and center, while strong sustainability initiatives also bring the past into the future. Adventure Canada, Canada and Awamaki, Peru were among the finalists. Conserving the Natural World, the third category (recognising outstanding support for the preservation of nature, restoring natural habitat and protecting rare and endangered species, whether on land or in the oceans) winner was North Island, Seychelles. “With the Seychelles Islands known as the Galapagos of the East, this luxury eco-resort’s innovative Noah’s Ark project has successfully reintroduced some of the Seychelles’ rarest and most endangered species back to nature as part of their restoration of native habitat on the former plantation island. Biologists on site monitor all aspects of the island’s ecology, contributing to greater global understanding of migration patterns, sea temperatures, and the impacts of climate change in one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. The finalists included Mark Thornton Safaris, Tanzania and Misool, Indonesia. The winner of next category- Engaging Communities was The Lodge at Chaa Creek, Belize. The award recognises the efforts for direct and tangible economic and social benefits that improve local livelihoods, including training and

capacity building, fair wages and benefits, community development, health care and education. The findings proved that Belize’s pioneer jungle lodge demonstrates that putting local people first benefits employees, villagers, and its own bottom line. The Lodge provides economic benefits to community projects across the nation, directing 10 percent of all room revenue to support social and environmental programs. They offer annual training and workshops to promote career development, and sponsor an Environmental Outreach Program, a free Eco-Kids summer camp, and scholarships and internships for local students. Andaman Discoveries, Thailand and Chambok Community Based EcoTourism/ Mlup Baitong, Cambodia made it into the final list. The final category Destination Leadership which recognises destination leadership, including cities, provinces, states, countries and regions that are demonstrating environmental best practices, protection of cultural and natural heritage, benefits to local communities and educating

travelers on the principles of sustainability saw Slovenian Tourist Board, Slovenia as the winner. With nearly 60 percent of its land protected, the country of Slovenia has successfully laid the foundation to become one of the world’s most sustainable destinations. The Tourist Board unifies all stewardship initiatives through its Green Scheme, which sets guidelines and provides tools for monitoring sustainability progress, instilling a culture of continual improvement in the country’s tourism efforts based upon benefiting local

communities, protecting cultural heritage and saving nature, including revitalising rural areas and creating authentic travel experiences for visitors helped Slovenia Tourist Board to secure this award. The finalists included the Riverwind Foundation/ Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, Wyoming, USA and Segera Retreat, Kenya. ASIAN TRAVELLER | March 2017

Around the world

Explore Madaba Art - Mosaic Jordan’s Madaba city houses several masterpieces of art made by nothing else but mosaics of Tourism. The only project of its kind in the Middle East, the Institute trains artisans in the art of making, repairing and restoring mosaics. Several neighboring houses built on Byzantine mosaic floors in Madaba were purchased by the Department of Antiquities to form the core of a museum for the city. The site was opened in 1987.

M

adaba, “the City of Mosaics”, located in Central Jordan is best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, and is home to the famous 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of coloured stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta.

The Madaba Mosaic Map covers the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The church was built in 1896 AD, over the remains of a much earlier 6th century Byzantine church. The mosaic panel enclosing the Map was originally around 15.6 X 6m, 94 sq.m., only about a quarter of which is preserved. In line with Jordan’s commitment to restoring

10

and preserving its mosaic masterpieces, Madaba’s extensive Archaeological Park and Museum complex encompasses the remains of several Byzantine churches, including the outstanding mosaics of the Church of the Virgin and the Hyppolytus Hall, part of a 6th century mansion. Other mosaic masterpieces found in the Church of the Virgin and the Apostles and the Archaeological Museum, depict a rampant profusion of flowers and plants, birds and fish, animals and exotic beasts, as well as scenes from mythology and everyday pursuits of hunting, fishing and farming. Literally, hundreds of other mosaics from the 5th through the 7th centuries are scattered throughout Madaba’s churches and homes. Close to the Church of the Virgin is the Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration, which operates under the patronage of the Ministry

A number of mosaics from Hesban, Ma’in Qastal, and Mount Nebo are on display in the open courtyard of the museum, along with a collection of lonian and Corinthian capitals, and a number of

Byzantine collonettes and altars. The museum also houses several collections of pottery, glass from Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. An important collection of Islamic pottery and bronze vessels found inside a room of the Umm AlWalid was conserved at the Institute of Conservation in Geneva and is now on display in Madaba. There is also a collection of silver Ptolemaic coins from Muraba’ at Musa and a collection of gold Umayyad dinars.

Mosaic sites are found surrounding Madaba at Ma’in, Hesban, Siyagha, Mukhayyat, Masuh, Mukawir, Nitel, Jamil, and, most importantly, at Umm Ar-Rasas (ancient Kastron Mefaa) with its fourteen churches, most of which date to the 5th and 6th centuries AD. The most famous, however, is the Church of St. Stephen dated to the Abbasid period (8th century AD).

Umm Ar-Rasas – A UNESCO World Heritage Site To the east of Madaba is Umm Ar-Rasas, a very ancient site that is mentioned in both the Old

and New Testaments of the Bible. The rectangular walled city is mostly in ruins but does still include several buildings, as well as four churches and some beautiful stone arches. The main attraction is outside the city walls within the Church of St. Stephen, which contains a very large, perfectly preserved mosaic floor laid down in 718 AD. It portrays fifteen major cities of the Holy Land from both east and west of the River Jordan. This magnificent mosaic is second only to Madaba’s world famous mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. ASIAN TRAVELLER | March 2017

PATA Asia Pacific

PATA Asia Pacific visitor forecasts 2017-2021 The much awaited PATA Asia Pacific visitor forecasts 2017-2021 is out. The leading voice and authority on travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region, PATA predicts a growth of 5 percent per annum in 2017-2021in Asia Pacific tourism (17.5%) and then Europe (11.0%). While the Pacific had the strongest annual growth rate as a supplier of foreign arrivals (6.1%), this was off a relatively small absolute base of arrivals; the conversion to an actual increase in volume a little over 861,000.

F

or several decades the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has published forecasts of international visitor demand across a range of destinations within the Asia Pacific region. The report, to be released in April, contains forecasts for international visitor arrivals to 39 destinations within the region for the period 2017 to 2021. It is important to note that the PATA forecasts relate to visitor arrivals as opposed to tourists (overnight visitors). This is done to consider the many near-border flows across the region that have a significant economic impact. Not every Asia Pacific destination is included, mainly because of data limitations or timing. However, the destinations that are covered by these

March 2017 | ASIAN TRAVELLER

forecasts account for around 98 percent of the total inbound foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific destinations, as reported by PATA. The forecasting unit of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU) has been working for some time with PATA’s Strategic Intelligence Centre (SIC) to refine and further develop the forecasts to improve accuracy and reliability. It comes as no surprise therefore to note that, over the last several years, when the forecasts have been compared to the actual arrival counts, the difference has been just one per cent. The integrity and robustness of these forecasts at the aggregate level is extremely high.

Expectations for 2016 Based on year-to-date data and the forecasts for

2016, current estimates are that the destinations as covered in the forecast report will return a combined inbound count in excess of 595 million foreign inbound arrivals. This would represent an annual growth rate of 3.4 percent on 2015 results and an annual volume increase of more than 19.6 million additional foreign arrivals. The level of growth differs markedly across each of the Asia Pacific regions, depending on the metric used. Annual percentage growth, for example, ranges from a high of 6.8 percent to a low of 3.2 percent while the annual volume gain is clearly favouring the Asian destinations, as shown in Figure 1. The origin market profile was dominated by the Asian source markets in 2016 (64.2% relative share), followed by the Americas

Asian source markets had both a strong annual growth rate (5.2%) and a large numeric base of arrivals so that the increase in foreign arrivals between 2015 and 2016 equated to more than 19 million. This represents 97 percent of the net gain in additional foreign arrivals between 2015 and 2016. There was significant variation in the dominant suppliers into each of the Asia Pacific regions however, with intraregional flows for example, accounting for 58 percent of arrivals into the Americas (Americas to the Americas), and 82.6 percent of arrivals into Asia (Asia to Asia). In both cases the intraregional flows showed the strongest numeric gains in foreign arrivals in 2016, relative to 2015. The Pacific region breaks this intra-regional dominance trend with the majority of foreign arrivals coming from Asia (37.1%), followed by the Americas (31.1%). Once again, both those origin regions supplied the greatest absolute increase in foreign arrivals into the Pacific in 2016, although the intra-regional gains were 11

PATA Asia Pacific

not far behind those of the Americas into the Pacific. At the sub-regional level it was once again all Asia with intra-regional flows in each of Northeast and Southeast Asia generating significant increases in absolute volume of arrivals between 2015 and 2016 as well as flows from Northeast Asia into Southeast Asia and vice-versa. The European source markets were generally strong into most of the Asia Pacific sub-regions with the obvious exception of West Asia, specifically Turkey. The strongest European numeric growth came from West, North and East Europe into Southeast Asia, but these increases were only just sufficient to cover the loss in arrivals from Europe into West Asia (-7.331 million). The result is that the overall flows from Europe into Asia Pacific were marginal for the year, relative to 2015. The strongest individual European markets in 12

2016 were the UK and the Russian Federation into Southeast Asia, both of which increased their relative arrivals count into the sub-regional destination by more than a quarter of a million. These were followed by Germany, France and Spain which increased substantially their arrivals into Southeast Asia and Central America.

The average annual growth rate of five percent for Asia Pacific destinations is driven largely by the 5.8 percent average growth rate into Asia which, by 2021, will account for over threequarters of all foreign arrivals into the Asia Pacific destinations.

numbering in excess of 300 million in that year.

At this time (2021), Asia will generate more than half a billion of the foreign arrivals into Asia Pacific, constituting more than two-thirds of the total because of its consistently high average annual growth rate between 2016 and 2021.

Southeast and Northeast Asia also see significant arrivals from Europe, especially from West and East Europe.

Over the five-year forecast period to 2021, foreign arrivals into the Asia Pacific destinations are expected to grow at an average rate of five percent per annum, reaching a combined foreign inbound count of close to 758 million.

The Americas and Europe will also be significant generators of foreign arrivals, the former numbering a little under 117 million by 2021 and Europe totalling over 76 million.

By the start of the next decade the Americas (as defined in this report) will be receiving 156 million foreign arrivals annually while Asia can expect to receive over 573 million. The Pacific is forecast to receive over 28 million foreign arrivals annually.

The intra-regional flows within Northeast and Southeast Asia, as well as the bi-directional flows across these two sub-regions, will continue to dominate the growth pattern in 2021 with the Northeast Asia-toNortheast Asia flows alone

Potential for 2021

The origin markets of West, North and East Europe will grow into the Asia Pacific over the forecast period. However, it is West Europe that will lead the way with an estimated volume into the Americas of almost 9.5 million arrivals in 2021. West Asia is expected to see a return to growth in 2021 with West, East and North Europeans in showing substantial volumes into that destination in 2021. (Note: Turkey is the only destination in the West Asia grouping for which forecasts are available).

Dr. Mario Hardy, Chief Executive Officer of PATA, said, “The importance of the Asia Pacific region, both as a receiver and a generator of international arrivals, has been evident for some time and the momentum certainly appears to be holding over the next five

years. With the maturing of many Asian source markets, destinations beyond the Asia Pacific region are also being increasingly explored. However, these destinations need to be ready to deliver a service that the increasingly sophisticated Asian traveller has already experienced in Asia and is now seeking in destinations further afield. envisaged to cater to the needs of air passengers in the next 20 years. The existing domestic terminal will now be shifted to the present international terminal, which in turn will be used for operation of business flights. The new terminal has centralised air conditioning system, 10 escalators, 21 elevators, three moving walkways, 33,000 sqft space for duty-free shops, 3,000 surveillance cameras, 700 fire detectors, 10 aero-bridges and modern baggage handling facility. It has a 100-percent LED lighting system. Capacity of the solar power plant at the CIAL is being augmented by 6MW, considering the additional energy requirement after commissioning of the new terminal. The original capacity of 15.5MW is sufficient only for the two old terminals. The first phase of capacity augmentation of the solar plant will be done spending `30 crore, and is expected to be completed by May this year. Soori Bali re-launched under new lifestyle brand we designed it, we built it and now, we run it too,” Soo Chan said. “For Ling and I, Soori Bali is as much a state of mind as it is a worldclass resort; it’s a peaceful, spiritual, healing and reenergising place.”

In the first bold move under his new lifestyle brand Soori, renowned architect Soo K. Chan has re-launched his beachfront resort, set between a volcanic sand beach and rice fields in Bali’s Tabanan Regency, as the ultimate wellbeing destination. The re-launch of Soori Bali, which has just joined Leading Hotels of the World, marks the first in a series of major developments to be rolled out under the Soori brand. Soori High Line, a residence opening in New York City’s West Chelsea, and Soori Niseko, a forthcoming ski resort in Japan, will underscore Soori’s philosophy of “living exceptionally well through holistic design”. Each of Soori Bali’s 48 private pool villas and residences are in the midst of refreshment. Soori Bali will soon introduce a new Indonesian restaurant, moored in a traditional wooden Balinese house amid the resort’s rice fields. Late 2017, Soori Bali will expand its vast helipad lawn

on the 10-bedroom Soori Estate totaling 5,250 square metres, culminating in the unveiling of a cantilevered platform jutting over the Indian Ocean. Soori Spa’s offerings are being significantly expanded, in line with the resort’s vision of being Bali’s premier well-being destination promoting a more harmonious and sustainable way of life. A team of onsite practitioners and visiting wellness experts will offer physical alignment and massage therapies, acupuncture, meditation, neurotherapy, and longevity procedures among many other bespoke techniques, while special retreats will be hosted throughout the year by visiting international wellness experts. Designed, owned and operated independently by Soo Chan, founder of Singapore-based SCDA Architects, and his wife Ling Fu, Soori Bali was conceived as the family’s private vacation home. But the setting was so compelling, and the feng shui such an overwhelming experience, they expanded their original vision from a private retreat to a more public experience. “What is unique about Soori Bali is that we own it,

20

Situated near Tanah Lot Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Bali’s most sacred places, the environmentally and culturally sustainable resort melds soothing natural surrounds with contemporary Balinese design elements, polished teak, and intricate terracotta tiles created by local artisans. Soo Chan said Soori Bali’s award-winning architecture drew inspiration from nearby villages and a stunning natural landscape. A dormant volcano, Mount Batukaru, towers in the near distance. Volcanic stone abounds in the region, so much so that Soo quarried light grey stone from nearby sources as the foundation for the resort’s buildings. A product of Soo Chan’s pioneering architectural style, Soori Bali blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. Myriad pools and courtyards open up spaces and promote natural light and crossventilation. The EarthCheck-certified resort minimizes its carbon footprint through its design as well as a host of measures including reduced energy consumption, water conservation, waste management and use of organic products. The hotel’s expansive facilities include an

infinity pool, gymnasium, library, spa, helipad, two gourmet restaurants, leisure concierge and butler service, and roundthe-clock room service. The 10-room Soori Estate comes with its own infinity pool, gym, spa, kitchen, chauffeur-driven car and private butler. Soori Bali will be joined by the opening of Soori High Line. A boutique residence by the famed High Line Park in West Chelsea, Soori High Line is comprised of 31 one to five-bedroom units, marrying crafted luxury with the pleasures of resort style living. Also designed and developed by Soo Chan, Soori High Line will welcome its first residents in early 2018 and will be joined by the forthcoming

ski resort Soori Niseko, currently under design. Set on the edge of the ocean between the Batukaru Mountain and terraced rice fields, Soori Bali is a hidden refuge, rejuvenating and peaceful; it is Bali as it should be. Designed, owned and operated by renowned architect Soo K. Chan and his wife Ling Fu, the resort prioritises environmental and cultural sustainability. Crafted out of local materials, Soori Bali maintains a true sense of place. Keeping things pure, its restaurants use fresh produce from nearby farms and spices from its own garden; the resort’s spa uses only the highest quality organic products. Kerala Tourism to introduce river cruise

M

odeled on the highly successful backwater cruise at Alappuzha and Kumarakom, the Tourism Department of Kerala is planning to introduce river cruise. The move is in view with a focus to Northern Kerala covering the rivers and backwaters of Kasargod district. This could boost the inflow of tourists into here with the upcoming international airport at Kannur. A theme-based ‘Malanadu Cruise’ is what’s in the mind of Tourism Department and links eight rivers and backwaters of Kannur and Kasargod districts. It will be a novel way to explore North Malabar’s traditional arts, culture, heritage, cuisine, martial art forms, rustic life and scenic beauty.

The Department aims to tap the tourism potential of these locations. The project worth Rs.400- crore also aims to develop a new niche tourism product for Kerala Tourism. Destination development along the 270km cruise route, generating employment to the local people and promoting handicrafts and handloom are the other aims. The 11 theme-based cruise has been chalked out based on the Chandragiri, Tejaswani, Perumba, Kuppam, Valapattnam, Anjarakkandy, and Mahe rivers and the backwaters of Valiyaparamabu and Kavvayi. The cruises — Yakshagana, River bathing and Water sports, Coastal Village, Handicraft, Mangrove, Theyyam, Malabari (Muthappan), Birds and Agri Cruise, Pazhassi Raja and Martial Arts — have been aptly named based on the unique 22

features, art forms, culture, heritage and cuisine around these rivers and waterbodies. Yakshagana and Theyyam performance and visit to Muderikadavu bird sanctuary, Ayirampara Pokkali fields, mangroves figure among the itinerary

worked out for cruise rides. Specially designed vessels with the latest safety features have also been proposed for rides. The longest cruise route of 37 km is from Munambukadavu to Valapattanam (Malabari cuisine cruise) and the Birds and agri cruise from Munderikadavu to Valapattanam, both along the Valapattanam river. The shortest 15-km cruise is from the Thekkil bridge to Thalangara along the Chandragiri tiver (Yakshagana cruise) and Martial arts cruise from Peringathur to Mahe along the Mahe river. The attempt is to take back the holidayers to the rich tradition and culture and showcase them through the novel Malanadu cruise, says architect Madhukumar who has worked out the concept. The project will be a big impetus to the tourism and infrastructure development of North Malabar and for generating employment, says Minister for Tourism Kadakampally Surendran. The preliminary works have commenced and

Kottapuram is to be the hub of operations. Tourism planners are trying to rope in local bodies, involve peoples’ representatives and get the financial assistance from the Swadesh Darshan scheme of the Union Ministry of Tourism.

Two new boat services allowed in Thekkady The Forest Department has given permission to the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation to operate new 120-passenger capacity boats in Thekkady. Earlier, KTDC had sought the forest department permission to

renew the lease agreement of forest land and launch two new boat services in Thekkady. Chief conservator of forests (Wildlife) and chief wildlife warden have recommended to the government to give permission to start two boat services and limit their number to three with a maximum capacity of 360 seats per trip. The government granted permission to the KTDC to assemble the newly-built vessels at the boat landing area in Thekkady and make a trial run. The order also says that the lease deed should be renewed within six months. Boating is the main

attraction in Thekkady and lack of it was badly affecting the tourism sector there.

Kochi to host tourism technology meet from June 8 The International Conference on Tourism Technology (ICTT), being organised by the Association of Tourism Trade Organisation - India (ATTOI) in association with Kerala Tourism, will be held in Kochi from June 8 to 10 at Hotel Le Meridien. Experts from seven countries - Andre Chow from Singapore, Billy Taylor from New Zealand, Christopher Tock from Malaysia, Donna Moritz from Australia, Lauren Cleland from the US, Nicky Kriel from the UK and Pierre Marechal from Belgium - will be attending the conference. “Technology is all around us, and the travel and tourism sector is no exception. So, it is high time all stakeholders adapted to the changes in the sector,” said ATTOI President Anish Kumar P K. ICTT-2017 aims to help tourism operators stay abreast with latest technology through the effective use of digital platforms. Match of Champions illustrates importance of sports tourism to Qatar

The first-ever Match of Champions attracted thousands of football fans, and is estimated to have brought over 5,000 international visitors to Qatar – particularly from the neighboring Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – and to have generated an estimated QAR 9.6 million* for the local economy. The large number of football fans that visited Qatar to attend the Match of Champions illustrates the value that sporting events can have for the tourism sector in Qatar, according to a senior Qatar

Tourism Authority (QTA) official. Commenting on the friendly between FC Barcelona and Al-Ahli SC, which took place at Doha’s Al Gharrafa Stadium on December, Rashed Al Qurese, Chief Marketing and Promotion Officer at Qatar Tourism Authority said, “The hosting of this Match of Champions is testament to the growing strength of Qatar’s position as a destination for global sporting events and its potential to significantly contribute to the growth of the tourism sector and overall economy.” Supporters of Saudi Arabia’s Professional League champions, Al Ahli SC and Spanish giants, FC Barcelona, were able to benefit from enticing travel packages including air

travel, accommodation and match tickets created by the match host, Qatar Airways, and QTA. Identified as one of the four priority tourism sub-sectors in the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy (QNTSS), sports tourism is defined as that which takes individuals temporarily out of their home communities to participate in sport and recreational activities, whether by competing, watching, or visiting sports associated attractions and facilities. Sports tourists also travel for sport education and sport-related business events, as well as to improve their health and well-being. Al Qurese continued, “We recognise the unique power that sport has in bringing people from around the world together in celebration of athletic excellence. With Qatar hosting a great number of

world-class competitions across a multitude of sporting disciplines, we are working closely with our partners to attract international sports tourists to visit Qatar.” Qatar also hosted the Italian Super Cup (Supercoppa Italiana) final between Juventus and AC Milan. The match, which took place on Friday 23 December at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium brought an additional boost to visitor arrivals this month, with over 3,000 tickets sold to international fans even before the match dates. The match marked the second time that the Italian Super Cup being played in the Qatari capital after Juventus took on Napoli in 2014 at the same stadium. (*This initial QAR 9.6

million estimate is based on 5,000 international visitors spending an average of 1.5 nights in Doha & QAR 1,280

each.)

in one of the main wings of the exhibition, further noting that like last year, the UAE was chosen as a ‘Focus Country’ due to its world-renowned tourist attractions, facilities and infrastructure. He also noted the diversity of the country’s tourism options and the development of services, as well as the presence of facilities provided for tourists from the moment they enter the country until their departure to ensure that they have a rich experience and consequently help promote Emirati tourist destinations regionally and globally. He also pointed out that India is one of the UAE’s top tourism patrons, saying that the number of Indian visitors rose by 9 per cent over 2015 to 2.3 million last year, accounting for 8.5 per cent of the UAE’s total visitors. Al Muhairi pointed out that the UAE’s selection as a ‘Focus Country’ for the second consecutive year has drawn significant attention from exhibition participants and visitors alike and contributed to a substantial increase in the number of visitors between India and the UAE. This, he said, highlights the importance of the state’s active participation in major tourism exhibitions, and push towards universal experience on other shows soon. For his part, Abdullah Al Hammadi, Director of the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Economy said, “The parties involved with the Ministry’s Pavilion include the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai), the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, the Ras Al

Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to taking part in the OTM travel trade show as part of the UAE delegation under the umbrella of the Ministry of Economy. The Authority’s participation in the event showcases Sharjah’s tourism offerings, continued H.E. Al Midfa, and allows it to communicate with influential stakeholders in the tourism industry. This strengthens the Authority’s strategic ties with the Indian market and allows it to benefit from the great momentum that this market can offer, as India is considered a key source market for Sharjah’s tourism sector. H.E. Saeed Al Semahi, Director General of the Fujairah Tourism & Antiquities Authority, said, India is a very important tourism market for the UAE in general and Fujairah

in particular; increased by around 50 per cent from 2015. This growth is the result of promotional workshops and heightened cooperation among the UAE’s tourism authorities and departments. We appreciate the efforts of the Ministry of Economy’s Tourism Sector in supporting and energising this vital sector.” H.E. Faisal Al Nuaimi, General Manager of the Ajman Tourism Development Department, added “Our participation in OTM 2017 is driven by our keen interest in creating a strong presence in the world’s biggest tourism market.
