T
he World Responsible Tourism Day celebrations held as part of this year’s World Travel Market London took up two key issues - overtourism and achieving the sustainable development goals – to debate. Of these, overtourism has already become a buzzword in the travel industry. Earlier in November over 60 ministers of tourism and private sector leaders gathered in London for the UNWTO / WTM Ministers’ Summit on ‘overtourism’. The meet put forward community engagement, communication, congestion management, adequate planning and product diversification as key aspects in dealing with ‘overtourism’. Speaking at the summit, secretary-general of World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Taleb Rifai has reiterated his view that “the key is to manage the growth sustainably, responsibly and intelligently and use the power of growth to our advantage.” “We cannot continue to build five-star hotels in three-star communities. Jobs and charity are not enough – we need to diversify visitors’ activities, reduce seasonality and raise awareness of less busy destinations,” he added. “Overtourism is destroying the very environment and failing to give back,” observed WTM London Director Simon Press, during the World Responsible Tourism Day event. Harold Goodwin, the responsible tourism advisor of WTM supported the view saying as a whole the industry was still doing very little and many were in denial. “Destinations have an overtourism problem but they just want more growth,” he added. It is high time that we look beyond numbers. Otherwise, the goose that lay golden eggs will eventually die, which we can’t afford.

Karnataka- a world within!
The state of Karnataka is an interesting mix of different cultures, flavours, landscapes, architecture and much more. While with one hand it embraces modernity, it relishes its past securely on the other
K
arnataka is a place where vibrant worlds seamlessly meld into one another every few hundred kilometers. You will find one of the best metropolitan cities in India at Karnataka- Bengaluru. At the same time you can find one of the earliest dynasties and its relics at Hampi. From vast fertile plains to dizzying mist covered hilly heights, waterfalls to
dense jungles, amazing beaches to holy temples… the amazement this state offers is plenty. It is home to people from different states- be it the North, North East or the far South. Karnataka even hosts the Tibetan refugees and is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in South India. Host to some of India’s largest and most powerful dynasties, the state has
across the centuries, carried a legacy of art and culture. Truly in a 1,91,791 sq km it is a world within. To know its diversity just check the different type of cuisines at Karnataka. Traditional Kannadiga cuisine is typically South Indian with a little bit of sweetness for added measure. But that doesn’t begin to sum it all. The feast of the land includes Udupi,
Mangalorean, Kodava and yes, Kannadiga, which again is a journey in itself - it varies with the geographical features. Even cereals vary and consumed in every imaginable form. Each preparation is different yet delicious. Mangalore is known for its rich seafood and spicy fish delicacies. Patrode, a special dish prepared by steaming stuffed colocasia
It is home to people from different states- be it the North, North East or the far South leaves, is a delicacy not to be missed. Akki rotti, or rice rotti, is a favourite not only in Mangalore but also in Malnad and Kodagu. Malnad cuisine is fusion of Kodava and Mangalorean fare. Key preparations include the midigayi pickle (tender mango,) sandige, avalakki (beaten rice) and akki rotti made of rice flour. meat and gravy hedonistic and is as distinctive as their costumes, customs and festivals. Pandi curry (pork curry) and Kadumbuttu (rice dumplings) are arguably the most delectable dishes in the Kodava repertoire. North Karnataka people love their wheat and jowar rottis (unleavened bread made of millet), a delicacy best savoured with a variety of chutnies or spicy curries. Bijapur Biriyani is another delight. These are just a few.
Bengaluru
For many it is still Bangalore. Malls, parks, pubs, theatre, cafes, art galleries, palaces - at any given point, Bangalore is buzzing and alive with activity. One of the most active cities in India it is also blessed with perfect weather and pleasant people. From a sleepy cantonment area of the British - tree lined avenues with quaint sounding names like Richmond Town and Victoria Layout, the city has grown into a thriving IT hub naming it as the ‘Silicon
Valley of India’. Bengaluru was even rated as the No.3 destination in the Best Travel Cities in 2012 by a prominent travel journal. A day might not be enough to explore this city. It is vast. Even when it is a large city it has got a mystic nature of attracting people towards it. Starting from the Bengaluru Palace, Vidhana Soudha, Attara Kacheri, Lalbagh Gardens, Cubbon Park, Museums, Art Galleries, Planetarium, ISKCON Temple, other pilgrimage centres all are equally November | ASIAN TRAVELLER
Bengaluru was even rated as the No.3 destination in the Best Travel Cities in 2012 by a prominent travel journal charming and attractive. Lalbagh Gardens and Cubbon Park boasts around 500 acres of lush greenery in the heart of the city. Lalbagh is home to India’s largest collection of rare tropical and subtropical
plants. Kempegowda’s watch towers, a surreal lawn surrounded by Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, a beautiful lake, a topiary park, a charming wooden bandstand and a glasshouse modelled on London’s Crystal Palace. Cubbon Park which provides the city a blanket with its tree tops is spread over 300 acres and also houses the State Library. The fountains, statues, different kind of trees and shady groves provide the city dwellers much refreshment. Little wonder, Bengaluru is
also called as the garden city of India. Nandi Hills located some 60 km from Bengaluru however remains the favourite spot for city dwellers to escape the chaos of the city. Apart from the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, the hills have become a popular tourist spot during summer. Tipu Sultan’s Palace and Fort, Tipu’s Drop, Horse way, Secret Escape Route are all attractions on the hilltop. Also, Nandi Hills is one of the unique places in Karnataka which offers paragliding activity. There are different opinions on how the hill got its name. According to one legend Yoga Nandeeshwara performed penance here, and so it was named after him. Another theory is that Nandi is also commonly called Nandidurga (Fort) because of the fort built here by the ruler Tippu Sultan. It is also perhaps called Nandi Hills because the hills resemble a sleeping
bull (Nandi). The hill gets its name from an ancient, 1300-year-old Dravidianstyle Nandi temple situated on this hill claims another theory. Anyhow, the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple in Nandi village is one of the oldest temples in Karnataka dating back to the ninth century. Built using rock, the temple has got two complexes- the first complex houses three deities and the second complex consisting of a huge and majestic kalyani pond. The construction of temple was completed by several kings. The foundation of the temple was constructed by the Banas of ninth century. The Chola rulers of the 11th century constructed the roof of the temple. The marriage hall was built by the Hoysalas in the thirteenth century and a wall of the second complex was built by the Vijayanagar kings. Beautiful stone carvings are part of the temple and a rich source of knowledge

for students of art and architecture. It is also cyclists and trekkers paradise. The sunrise on the hilltop above the clouds attracts many travellers during weekends and holidays. It is also popular among the birdwatchers and bird photographers as the hills have plenty of moist forest species. The evergreen forest patch on top of the hill is a favourite location for many migrant species of warblers, flycatchers and thrushes.
Mysore
The first two things which come into your mind when you think of Mysore could be Mysuru Dasara and Mysore Pak- the first being a grand festival and second being a grand sweet. The 10-day festival Mysuru Dasara starts on Navaratri and ends on Vijayadashami. It is a celebration of the victory of good over evil. From the olden times itself, Mysore used to celebrate the Dasara festival with all grandeur and pomp. Historical proofs suggest

The idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari placed on a golden mantapa (which is around 750 kg of gold) on the top of a decorated elephant is used for the procession on this special occasion that Vijayanagara Empire Kings as back as 15th century used to celebrate the Dasara festival. Even now it is celebrated with much fanfare with the flow of many domestic and foreign tourists to witness the festival charms. The Dasara Festival in Mysuru completed 400th anniversary in 2010. Coming back to the story of the festival, it was the day when Goddess Chamundeshwari (Durga) killed the demon Mahishasura. The Mysuru tradition celebrates the warriors and the state fighting for the good during this festival, ritually worshipping and displaying the state sword, weapons, elephants, horses along with Hindu Devi goddess in her warrior form
(predominantly) as well as the Vishnu avatar Rama. The ceremonies and a major procession is traditionally presided by the king of Mysuru. During the festival, Mysore Palace will be illuminated with numerous light bulbs and is a sight to behold. Various cultural and religious programs highlighting the dance, music and culture of the state are performed in front of the illuminated Palace.
On the last day of festival the streets of Mysore will witness the traditional Dasara procession (locally known as Jumboo Savari). The idol of the Goddess Chamundeshwari placed on a golden mantapa (which is around 750 kg of gold) on the top of a decorated elephant is used for the procession on this special occasion. Colourful tableaux, dance groups, music bands, decorated elephants, horses and camels form a part of the procession which starts
from the Mysore Palace and culminates at a place called Bannimantap where the banni tree (Prosopis spicigera) is worshipped. According to a legend of the Mahabharata, banni tree was used by the Pandavas to hide their weapons during their one-year period of Agnatavasa (living life incognito). Before undertaking any warfare, the kings traditionally worshipped this tree to help them emerge victorious in the war.
The sweet which has conquered the taste buds of people irrespective of ageMysore Pak also originated from Mysore. The Legend is that the royal sweet prepared by cook Kakasura Madappa in the palace kitchen hadn’t any name. He had used a mixture of besan, ghee and sugar to prepare this sweet which delighted the royal family. Madappa named it ‘Mysore Pak’. Even now it is the much loved sweet by the North Indians as well as the South Indians. ASIAN TRAVELLER | November 2017

Proud moment for Kerala Tourism at World Travel Market (WTM) London
S
etting an example for other state tourism departments, Kerala Tourism has won the award for World’s Best Responsible Tourism Project at the World Travel Market London for its prestigious tourism project at Kumarakom. Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran received the award in the presence of Tourism Principal Secretary Dr Venu V and Director P Balakiran. Kadakampally said the award was a recognition to the government’s efforts to ensure people’s participation in tourism activities. Kerala’s responsible tourism project at the backwater destination of Kumarakom won the award. The project had earlier won several national and international honours, including the UNWTO Ulysses Prize, Pacific Asia Travel Association’s Grand and Gold awards and five national awards. Kerala Tourism participated in the threeday WTM London 2017 highlighting success of the
state’s ‘Responsible Tourism Mission.’ Kadakampally led the state delegation which showcased Kerala’s bestselling products, including its award-winning Responsible Tourism initiatives, pristine beaches, hill stations, backwaters, houseboats and ayurveda therapies. The minister also launched an initiative
of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) titled ‘Ayurbodha’ highlighting the significance of Ayurvedic practices to attract tourists.
a community tourism network so as to “include the local community not just as a participant, or even a beneficiary, but as a leader.”
The special session on ‘Kerala’s Responsible Tourism Mission’ was moderated by Harold Goodwin, WTM Responsible Tourism Advisor. Dr Venu V, Jose Dominic, CEO, CGH Earth Hotels, and Xu Jing, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, UNWTO were present.
Jose Dominic, Managing Director of CGH Earth, shared the story of Coconut Lagoon, an incredibly sustainable property his company runs in the village of Kumarakom, which is itself a pioneer in Kerala’s responsible tourism mission. He explained how the commitments CGH Earth has made when it comes to operating its lodges are not just the more responsible way to act, they have also improved profitability, since their businesses stand out from the crowd and offer remarkable experiences. For example, he explained that Coconut Lagoon is zero waste, has its water needs served entirely from rainwater harvesting, and is now even preserving and

reintroducing the endemic Vechur cow species, while engaging its guests in all these stories. In an echo of Susanne Becken’s arguments from the earlier session, he added that it was essential for tourism to move away from a business model where companies commit two per cent to Corporate Social Responsibility and ‘good works’, which he said just means they can just do whatever they want with
the rest of their business. Instead, he argued, we need to design companies to be sustainable and “purposeful” in the way they operate their core business. More than 600 women, 500 farmers and 230 homesteads are making money through Kerala’s Responsible Tourism initiativethrough self employment, producer groups, micro enterprises and
innovative village life experience tours. The judges were impressed by the scale of the achievement in securing benefits for the local community and the zero waste and cleanliness campaigns. The judges also noted that the new state level Responsible Tourism Mission and the efforts being made to extend the initiative across Kerala to benefit many more communities and to measure and report impacts.

The Paul Resorts and Hotels to open up new properties in Coorg and Fort Kochi by next year Sanjay Varma, Resident Manager, Kumarakom Lake Resort talks about his love for hospitality among many other things to Asian Traveller open doors after the renovation early next year. With the growth of the company I do see myself handling more responsible portfolios in the years to come.
1. You have been in the hospitality industry for the past several years. Could you tell us about your early days? What made you enter the hospitality sector? I have been in the hospitality Industry for 20 years. I started my career with the Taj Group of Hotels with Taj Malabar Willingdon Island being the first, then moved to the Taj President, Mumbai and my last assignment with the Taj was at The Gateway Calicut. I worked with The Taj Group of Hotels for 12 years. As of now, I have been working with The Paul Resorts & Hotels for the past 8 years. I got to know of the hospitality industry through friends who were already working with renowned hotel chains. The industry was a lot to do with interacting with people which I felt was one of my core competencies.

Cyprus Visa Application Centres now in 16 cities in India VFS Global has expanded the network of Cyprus Visa Application Centres in India with centres for applicants now launched in four additional cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Goa, Gurugram, and Jaipur. The new centres commenced operations on 10 November 2017. The expansion of the network of Cyprus visa centres to a total of 16 cities in India signals the strengthening relationship in trade and tourism between the two counties. Earlier, applicants in Thiruvananthapuram were required to travel to Chennai to complete their visa application process for Cyprus. Applicants can now benefit from applying in their own city, and can avail of the additional services, such as SMS updates, courier services, online tracking services, among others. The centre in
Thiruvananthapuram was inaugurated by His Excellency Demetrios A Theophylactou, High Commissioner of Cyprus to India, in a ceremony held on 17 November 2017. The complete address of Cyprus Visa Application Centre in Thiruvananthapuram: First Floor, Asiactic Business Centre, Tc2/2408-3, Attipra Village, Kazhakuttam, Thiruvananthapuram – 695583. Speaking at the event, His Excellency Demetrios A Theophylactou, High Commissioner of Cyprus to India, said, “It is a pleasure to inaugurate the Cyprus Visa Application Centre, operated by VFS Global. The opening is quite timely, also due to a noticeable increase in visa related queries from Kerala. I do believe that this centre would further expand and enhance visa services and also promote peopleto-people contacts, thus
contributing to our bilateral relations. Kerala is a major state with a large percentage of human capital working abroad; therefore, the centre fulfils a vital service with respect to the provision of information and guidelines to applicants who intend on visiting Cyprus for tourism, business, study, as well as employment purposes. The centre would work in close cooperation with the Consular Department of the High Commission to achieve the goal of timely and
efficient issuance of visas.” VFS Global has served the Government of Cyprus in India since 2015. Globally, the company serves the client government since 2010, through a network of 21 Visa Application Centres in seven countries. With Cyprus emerging as a favoured destination for outbound tourism, VFS Global’s appointment as a service provider will greatly benefit the growing volumes of applicants from India.

agapattinam is far from the state capital Chennai. It is almost 300 km away from Chennai. Yet it does not deter tourists and devotees from coming into this district. For them it is their nearest place to visit their favourite pilgrimage centres and to go for other places like Nagore, Velankanni, Sikkal, Kodiyakkarai, Vedaranyam, Mannargudi and Tharangambadi.
The history of the place dates back to the Chola period. There is evidence suggesting that Nagapattinam was a part of the Cholamandalam and was called as ‘Cholakula Vallipattinam’ during that period. The place also finds mention in ancient Chinese Traveller Hieun Tsang’s book as ‘Padarithitha’ and
a reference to a Buddha Viharam considered to be built by Emperor Ashoka. With the arrival of Portuguese to India, Christianity was also introduced to the region as back as 1550’s. Soon after the Portuguese, it was the time for the Dutch and the British. Like the olden days, much of the livelihood of the people comes from the seaborne trade. Fishing, Agriculture and Tourism- especially pilgrimage tourism are the other important economic activity for most of the people of this region. Nagore Dargah, a 16th -century minaret stands proud in Nagore showcasing the Hindu and Muslim unity. Devotees from both religions come for prayers here. Most of the works of minarets were completed by Hindu kings. The Hindu- Muslim relation is further seen in the musical instruments used during Kanduri festival. Nadaswaram which is considered to be a typical musical instrument used in the temples and Hindu religious traditions are used here. The annual 14-day Kanduri festival is celebrated in commemoration of the anniversary of the saint Hajrath Shahul Hamid’s death. the temple is made of lapis lazuli which is a deep blue metamorphic rock that has been prized since antiquity for its intense colour. The temple is one of the seven temples of the Thyagaraja cult, classified as Saptha Vidangam, where the presiding deity Thyagaraja is believed to portray different dance styles. The temple is also known for the shrine of Neelayadakshi, the consort of Kayarohanaswami.
Soundararajaperumal Temple dedicated to Vishnu is the other attraction for Hindu devotees. The glory of the temple is that it is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu mentioned in Nalayira Divya Prabandham by Thirumangai Azhwar, one of the 12 poet saints called Azhwars belonging to the 6th –9th century. For Christian pilgrimage,
Velankanni is chosen by devotees from all parts of South India. Velankanni is one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India. Even though the pilgrimage centre is located 10 km from Nagapattinam, many devotees throng the church during weekends and special days. The Basilica of Our Lady of Good
Health, a Roman Catholic church built during the 17th century is also known as the ‘Lourdes of the East’. Pilgrimage to the basilica is common during September when people of many faiths, especially Hindus, Muslims and Christians of all denominations visit the basilica. It is estimated that around 20 million pilgrims visit the shrine from all over India and abroad annually.

That’s why Brussels Airlines proudly participates to the State Visit to the Republic of India of Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Belgians from 8 to 11 November in Mumbai. For the occasion, Brussels Airlines, together with Brussels-Capital Region and its other Belgian partners Brussels Airport, Bal Moderne and Tomorrowland, one of the biggest music festivals in the world, organise “Brussels Dances with Mumbai”, a dance event at The Gateway of India with Bal Moderne and the world famous DJ Lost Frequencies behind the decks. 2000 lucky winners of a Facebook contest were invited by Brussels Airlines to attend the event. “Our new service received a warm welcome here in the Indian market and we are very happy with the results. Adding this 6th weekly flight
confirms our investment in the Indian market. We are therefore very happy to participate to the Belgian Royal State Visit here in Mumbai. With this spectacular event at the iconic gate of India, we are proud to bring the best of Belgium to India and to emphasise on the importance of the economic bonds between our two countries,” says Bernard Gustin, CEO of Brussels Airlines. On its flights from and to Mumbai, Brussels Airlines combines Belgian and Indian hospitality in its catering, its movie selection and even in its crew composition. The airline hired Indian cabin crew members to cater to the needs of their Indian guests on the Mumbai flights. They work hand in hand with the airline’s Belgiumbased crew members. The Mumbai-Brussels flight
schedule allows seamless connections to many European, African and American destinations in the Brussels Airlines network, like London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol, Geneva, Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Stockholm, Milan, Madrid and the intercontinental flights to New York, Toronto, Washington and 19 African destinations. At the end of 2018, Brussels Airlines gradually renews its long haul fleet with the replacement of 7 of its 10 Airbus A330’s. The airline will introduce a brand new Business Class, improved Economy Privilege and all-new Economy Class.
