Peachtree City is a very special place. Year after year the national recognition keeps coming and it is well deserved. We all live here because we love it and our lead article talks about all of the special pastime places that we enjoy so much. It was great fun working with our staff and seeking out some great photos to capture the joy of some of these 3rd Places. Hopefully, some of these will give you ideas of places you might be missing. Don’t miss the brief article about the new spillway – particularly the QR Code and URL that will take you to a video that Tom Black will be updating regularly throughout the construction. There are plenty of fun things going on over the next six months! Check out the Events Section happenings Here and Near! The Southern Hands Artists Studio Tour is Free this year – don’t miss it – perfectly timed for Christmas gift giving. Our Pull Out – Paths Map in the center of the magazine has been updated. The much anticipated bridge over the train tracks at McDuff and Senoia Rd is expected to be finished this fall. Our citizens have great hearts and give back to the community by volunteering in many different areas– take a look at our Neighbors Helping Neighbors Section and get involved. We want to give a shout out to our talented friends and staff who have put this magazine together – from sales, to writing, to design and photography they all bring their multiple talents together to produce a magazine that our city can be proud of. “I
first learned about “the 3rd Place” in the Fall of 2012. That was the year that Tricia Sterns wrote an article for our magazine about her Farmers Market in the Aberdeen Village Shopping Center. Her article got me interested in the Farmers Market, and every Saturday it became a priority for me to visit there. It got to be a fun thing to do and I learned a lot about organic food and gardening at the same time. It was on one of those visits to the Farmers Market when I saw an old friend and business associate, Todd Strickland. We stopped for a brief “how-do-youdo?” conversation, when I said, “Todd, I don’t think all these people are coming to this Farmers Market just to buy fresh, organic produce and handmade products. I see a lot more going on—people with their kids, grandparents, the family dog, and they are giving hugs to friends that they obviously haven’t seen for a long time.” Todd, who is Managing Principal of Historical Concepts and past Chairman of the Peachtree City Development Authority, responded with a slight smile
and said, “Charlie, I think you are on to something. Have you heard about ‘the 3rd Place’?” I replied that I didn’t know about the 3rd Place, but would like to learn more. Todd went on to tell me that sociologists had written some thought-provoking books—around 2,000, in fact—about the importance of 3rd Places. He explained that land planners and urban redevelopment professionals are creating 3rd Place spaces into their plans.” – Charlie Nelson, Publisher
degrees of stress and problems. Our 1st and 2nd Places are filled with stress everyday—issues of the working place, health, finances, and so on. No wonder we seek out that special 3rd Place that will provide us with a time of respite, a time to quiet our mind and slow our pace. Some examples of a 3rd Place could be a Farmers Market, a local pub, a church group, or a musical group. A 3rd Place is more than a solitary hobby. It will involve some friendly interaction with other people that we can call friends.
• So just what is a 3rd Place? Why is • 3rd Places are not the same for it important to us? There are three important places in our lives: First, everyone, but they do have some our home; Second, our work; and Third our special place common qualities. that provides for the social contacts that we need—very different than the other two. In our stressful, everyday lives, we typically leave our home early in the morning. We arrive at our work place where we work for the next 10-12 hours. We drive home for dinner and a brief evening before bedtime. Both our home life and our business life contain varying

The TV show “Cheers” is used as one illustration of a 3rd Place. Here are some of the characteristics that we find in this illustration: 1) It is a friendly setting—non-judgmental. 2) Newcomers are quickly assimilated into the group. 3) Everyone knows everyone’s first name. 4) There is no hierarchy—outside work and position

has little meaning to the relationships. 5) There is no set time for meetings—people come and go on their own schedule. 6) There is no schedule or set agenda—people show up at random times and leave at will. When you apply these characteristics to the Cheer’s illustration you can see that all of the social interaction follows these guidelines—to the extent that the postman is likely to be giving the psychiatrist insights on how to handle his love life. Where are the 3rd Places that we have in Peachtree City? Here are a few listed below. You will find others written about throughout this issue.
3RD PLACES THAT WE LOVE IN PEACHTREE CITY • Battery Way Park
Battery Way Park on the east side of Lake Peachtree is a favorite 3rd Place for residents to enjoy a
sunset over the lake. In fact, many residents gather at Battery Way in golf carts on a regular basis to socialize at the end of the day. The park has a newly rebuilt public boat dock and ramp for launching non-gasoline powered boats onto Lake Peachtree. There is also a lakeside tot lot, outdoor exercise equipment and picnic areas. Swimming is permitted by Peachtree City residents and their accompanied guests from Battery Way Park, but a safety boat or a highly visible floatation device is required if swimming more that 100 feet from shore.
• Drake Field
On the western shores of Lake Peachtree is Drake Field, 10 acres of scenic open space adjacent to the Peachtree City Library. Drake Field has long been a 3rd Place for residents. The park is named after Henry C. Drake, a Peachtree City physician who donated the land behind his clinic to the city in 1979 for use by the youth soccer league. Recently restored, Drake Field has a .25-mile loop with boardwalks and bridges around the park’s central grassy area. Other amenities include picnic tables, seating areas with Adirondack chairs and porch-
style swings, and public access to the lake. Future plans for Drake Field include an open-air pavilion, gateway entry, and a bridge that connects Drake Field to the Picnic Park
• Peachtree City Farmers Market The Peachtree City Farmers Market has definitely
become a 3rd Place for many. No matter whether you come alone to stroll the aisles and enjoy the musical entertainment, with family for Saturday morning treats and weekend shopping, or with co-workers looking for a lunch stop at one of the Market’s guest food trucks, the Farmers Market is a place to connect with friends and meet new ones. The Market hosts more than 50 farmers and artisans who come out each week offering the freshest produce, homemade breads, jams, jellies, local honey, grass fed meats, goat cheese, fresh flowers and bath products. The Market also has partnered with a local home delivery service for shopper’s convenience. The Market operates Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9am1pm.

a 3rd Place for moms and dads. The 5-acre park, which sits adjacent to Lake Peachtree and behind the municipal complex, offers fishing, a horseshoe court, a covered picnic shelter, and access to the fenced in All Children’s Playground. There is probably not a small child in Peachtree City who has not swung or played the chimes at the playground. The park features ramps and connectors that allow children of any ability to play. It also has a cushioned, rubberized surface that is smooth enough for a wheelchair, resilient enough to cushion a fall. The park is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week
• The Dog Park A 3rd place for many dog owners is the Dog Park in the McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex. This safe, fenced-in, clean and friendly area has plenty of room for dogs to play and exercise. It is divided into three separate areas to accommodate dogs of various sizes and ages. Each section features a gazebo and outdoor seating for owners, mulch ground cover, shade trees, and a water spigot. Bags are provided for dog waste. The Dog Park is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. It is 100% user funded and is managed by the Peachtree City Dog Park Association. Visits are $1 for up to 3 dogs at a time. A Dog Park membership is $35 per year for Fayette residents, or $45 per year for non-Fayette residents.

The Avenue
ANDREW MOTH, GM, helps to make The Avenue a 3rd Place
Andrew Moth realizes that communities need a sense of place—a place where people can gather and socialize with others. One of his focuses as General Manager of The Avenue Peachtree City is to make the shopping center a 3rd Place for Peachtree City residents. “The Avenue Peachtree City is not only a place to dine and shop but an inviting destination where you can relax and stay a while. We have many regulars who visit us daily just to sit outside, enjoy the scenery and listen to our property-wide music. Monthly events help the community feel like this is a place where you can meet up with friends, bring your family and socialize. Our summer movie series just wrapped up and our Thursday Night Out events begin in September. We are continually working on improvements to the property and introducing ways to excite our visitors. In the future, we will be introducing more experiential marketing, live music, celebrity appearances and much more. We are working hard to continue to be Peachtree City’s 3rd Place.” — Andrew Moth

>> OUR 3rd PLACES It’s Time for the Islands!
NEW SPILLWAY Imagine a week of sailing from island to island on a beautiful catamaran in the British Virgin Islands. Each day offers a new adventure as you sail to each island. The sails are 2 to 4 hours and the catamaran is always in sight of land. The boat has 4 large cabins, each with it’s own full bath. It is a wonderful way to get away and enjoy the water, wind and sun. Visit our website: www.SailtheBVI.com or call 770.378.9747 for more information.
Great fun at an affordable price.!
This artist’s rendering shows the $3,800,000 new spillway that began construction in early September to replace the old spillway (dam) which did not meet modern day requirements, and could not be repaired. The old spillway must first be removed which means that the water level in the lake will be partially lowered but not totally drained during the fall/winter season. Weather permitting, the project should be completed by June 2018 and the lake filled back to the normal levels. The QR Code in this article will take you to a link to an on-going video that will be updated from time to time throughout the construction. Tucked into a secluded, wooded area, the 2,500-seat amphitheater offers great acoustics and an intimate setting that includes lawn seating, picnic tables, and a Gold Section at the foot of the stage. In its 22 years of summer concerts, The Fred has drawn big names like Melissa Etheridge, Richard Marx and Pat Benatar, Hall and Oates, Peter Frampton, Michael McDonald, Blake Shelton, Gladys Knight, and the Beach Boys. About 20 craftsmen design and create custom wood work, airbrushing, custom
knife production, jewelry, metal fabrication and leather goods. There is a video and photography studio and a graphic design agency. Purchase tour tickets online at southernground.com. Artists’ work can be purchased at the end of the tour or at the Southern Ground Gallery on Main Street in Senoia. Proceeds of the tour and merchandize sales benefit Camp Southern Ground. This unique historic attraction boasts hundreds of WWII era artifacts, educational seminars, event space and hands-on learning. Groups and individuals are encouraged to call for a special tour of these amazing War Birds, perfectly restored and flying. In fact, you can take a ride in one of 5 War Birds—prices range from $60-$1,600 for a half-hour experience. Imagine soaring over Peachtree City in a P51 Mustang or T6-Texan! leaton’s is an innovative concept and first of it’s kind in Metro Atlanta. Gleaton’s picks up fine estates and collections from around the area every day and offers them for anyone to come in and buy. Being a licensed auctioneer enables Gleaton’s to allow bidding on the items as well. You have a choice to buy the item out right or you can bid right there on your mobile device or at home. EVERYTHING STARTS AT $5 on the bidding. People come in everyday and buy the high end items and check bids on their phones. You have to see it! Eric Gleaton, a professional realtor in Peachtree City, saw a need that had to be filled. People were selling their large homes and estates and there was an abundance of high quality furniture, household goods and personal articles that needed to be sold. Since the Gleaton family in South Georgia was experienced in the auction business, Eric decided to open up a one of a kind business in Peachtree City. You can visit the Showroom from 10am-4pm Monday – Friday, and 9am-1pm on Saturday. Also there are Live Auctions Every Thursday night at 6pm with amazing Antiques, Vintage Items, Home Decor, Tools, Jewelry and more!

re you looking for exercise or recreational activity? In Peachtree City, it can be one and the same! With so much of its Master Plan devoted to green space and paved multiuse paths as well as an abundance of recreational facilities, Peachtree City has much to offer when it comes to staying fit. Here are some ways to keep moving in Peachtree City. Peachtree City has over 100 miles of multi-use path for runners, walkers, bikers and inline skaters to enjoy on a daily basis. The path running around the east side of Lake Peachtree is especially popular on Saturday mornings. Groups of runners and walkers meet at the City Hall fountain and work their way to
Battery Way Park. The network of paths, mostly around The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater and south of Highway 54, is also utilized for numerous running events throughout the fall and winter, including the Peachtree City Running Club’s Peachtree City Classic which draws runners from all over the region. Road biking is another popular form of exercise in and around Peachtree City. Bicycles Unlimited and other bike shops in the area organize frequent bike tours for biking enthusiasts. Peachtree City Tennis Center, a nationally recognized USTA facility, has 24 courts (12 hard, 6 soft and 6 covered) and is open seven days a week. The tennis center serves everyone in the
community from the youngest juniors to the oldest seniors with developmental programs, high-performance programs, and drop-in drills and play. The center hosts numerous regional and national tournaments along with USTA and ATLA team play. The tennis center is also one location in town for the growing sport of pickle ball. For golf enthusiasts, there are four private championship golf courses in town, as well as a 50-acre public driving range and 9-hole, par 3 golf course in nearby Tyrone. Many times recreational fitness requires lessons. Many people love to dance and find it a great way to keep fit. You will find various dance

organizations and schools that offer classes, private lessons, and lots of social dance events. Participating in the Martial Arts is another way to improve health, strength, flexibility and cardiac stamina. There are numerous martial arts studios in Peachtree City for both kids and adults. Swimming is another way to stay fit throughout the fall and winter. The indoor pools at the Kedron Aquatic Center offer swim classes as well as open swim all year long while the Peachtree City Dive Center offers swimming, scuba and snorkeling lessons and experiences. Anything that keeps you moving contributes to staying fit and healthy. You will find plenty of opportunities to do that in Peachtree City.

or many people in Peachtree City, outdoor physical activity is a 3rd Place. Their love might be a game of tennis or golf, a bike ride, kayaking on one of our three beautiful lakes, or working out at one of our many local gyms. Due to Peachtree City’s extensive network of paved path, however, running and walking are probably the most popular physical activities for many in the community. All you need is a good pair of shoes and a desire to get outdoors. Any age, any size, and any degree of speed is up to you—whatever gives you that 3rd Place happiness and state of well being—that feeling of relaxation and physical release. With walking and running so popular, it’s only natural that a race, or in this case a series of races, would become one of the most enjoyed, on-going events in town. Founded by the Peachtree City Running Club and the Peachtree City Rotary Club, the Rotary Elementary School Grand Prix is a series of running events at local elementary schools that utilize the town’s extensive network of paved paths. These 5K races and
1-mile runs/walks are designed as a fun way to get youngsters and their families moving as well as raise money for their schools. The series, which runs from early October through May each year, began in the spring of 2005 with just 5 schools participating. Today, the series hosts fundraising races at 16 Fayette County Schools. Collectively, about $100,000 is raised for the local elementary schools annually, with over $1,250,000 raised since the start of the series. Many serious runners run their very first race in the Grand Prix series at their elementary school. Over 2,000 kids and adults run in at least 1 race each year. Participants are encouraged to run in more than just their own local school’s race, and about 100 people run in at least 4—the number in which you must participate to qualify for year-end awards. Participants earn points for each race, with the number of points determined by how you finish in your age group and gender. The Running Club marks off 1-mile and 5K courses
in the vicinity around each elementary school, and each school helps promote and organize its event. One of the best publicized is the Peachtree City Elementary Jingle Bell Trail in December where you will find a lot of elves and Santas happily running the course. The Rotary Club of Peachtree City holds an awards luncheon on the last Thursday of May each year for age

group winners. Winners receive a unique plaque with their own photo. This is one sporting event in which parents and their children can actually participate together, and about one-fourth of the awards involve parents, children and siblings all winning. As organizers point out, the races are held about once every other week during the school year, so participation is a perfect way to slowly get into running and chart your progress from race to race. Many people use the Grand Prix Series as a weight loss program that ends up being a lot of fun as well as a great way of supporting Fayette County schools. For more information about the Grand Prix Series, or to track cumulative points, go to ptcrc. com/rotary-grand-prix/.
For GEORGE MARTIN, Running is a 3rd Place Activity For many people in Peachtree City, running is a 3rd Place activity. Grand Prix Series Coordinator, George Martin, has been a driving force in the development of the Rotary Grand Prix, which has not only raised money for local schools but given youngsters their first opportunity to run competitively. “Over the lifetime of the Grand Prix Series, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City has seen kids run their first race at their elementary school and then go on to develop an overall love of running and be successful at competitive running in high school, college and as adults. The Grand Prix Series has raised more than a $1.5 million for Fayette County Elementary Schools, and this year will be the largest number of fund-raising races—17—in our 14-year history! And you can’t do them all if you don’t do the first one at Fayetteville Elementary on September 16th!” — George Martin
>> Peachtree City Rotary Club Elementary Grand Prix Race Series The Rotary Club of Peachtree City, in cooperation with the PTC Running Club, has created a series of races that provide the opportunity for both children and adults to participate in healthy events as well as raising much needed funds for our local elementary schools. Last year about $100,000 was raised by the schools and the series of races has became one more campaign in the fight against childhood obesity.

>> fitness & HEALTH Piedmont Fayette Celebrating 20th Anniversary with Expansion Awards
I
n September of this year, Piedmont Fayette Hospital will celebrate their 20th anniversary. In addition to honoring 20 years of providing high-quality, patient centered care to the community since 1997, Piedmont Fayette will also be recognizing some notable achievements and some recent additions. The hospital officially opened its new patient tower with a ribbon cutting ceremony in March of the year. Although the big construction is over, there is still renovation taking place throughout the hospital. Portions of the old emergency department are being renovated to match the style of the new area, the surgical area will get two operating suites and a renovation on an existing room, and one hallway of the center tower will be dedicated to education and training for nurses. As for new services being offered at the hospital, the cardiovascular unit recently added electrophysiology and radiation oncology has added brachytherapy, also known as high-dose radiation therapy. Previously, patients would have had to travel outside of the county to receive either of these treatments. Piedmont Fayette announced that it received the Healthgrades 2017 America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award earlier this year. This was the third consecutive year that Piedmont Fayette received this award. The distinction makes Piedmont Fayette among the top one percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its consistent, yearover-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. “This award demonstrates that we deliver the highest quality, compassionate care to our patients,” said Piedmont Fayette CEO Michael Burnett. “This recognition is made possible by the consistent and incredible work of our physicians, nurses, staff members and volunteers and the culture of excellence that we demand.” For more information about Piedmont Fayette Hospital, visit piedmont.org

There’s More in Peachtree City ... and it’s in Wilksmoor! By Jeff Warlick
T
he completion of the North section of McDuff Parkway has opened the door to significant new growth in Peachtree City. The expansion of Wilksmoor (what many often call the West Village) was long planned. Delayed for over 10 years the development is now well underway. The major developers are Kolter Homes and Pulte Group (doing business in Peachtree City as John Wieland Homes after Pulte acquired John Wieland late last year). The Kolter development is Cresswind and
the John Wieland development is Everton. The Cresswind development is particularly interesting and timely. Cresswind is designed as an active adult community. Kolter is known for it’s communities in some of the top locations for active adults. The portfolio includes communities in Florida, the Carolinas and Georgia. The Peachtree City location compliments the Lake Lanier development created several years ago. In
Peachtree City the development has been carefully planned to integrate with the sense of community in the City. Cresswind will provide both a feeling of community within itself that then extends to the greater community of the City; a combination that is difficult to beat or even duplicate. Residents will have the best of both worlds. Many residents have enjoyed the special nature of Peachtree City and the surrounding area while they raised a family. Now, they want to stay to be with (Continued on page 42)

family and enjoy a new season of their lives. In addition the city continues to attract new people that appreciate everything this part of Georgia has to offer. Economists may refer to it as aging in place, but the objective of Cresswind is to create an opportunity to live an active life in place…or as the developers like to say Living Better and Living Longer. The Cresswind development will have approximately 650 homes on over 400 acres when complete. It has already established itself with over 50 homes sold and delivered.

F
or a community its size, Peachtree City is blessed with an extraordinarily large number of people who volunteer as well as nonprofit organizations that are focused on helping their fellow man. For many, volunteering holds an important place in their hearts. For example, Mid-West Food Bank is a faith-based organization that helps other non-profit organizations to “feed hungry people.” In 2016, 4,000 people volunteered over 32,000 hours of service as the local organization provided $1,000,000 worth of food to over 280 non-profit organizations serving more than 188,000 people each month in and around our community. This achievement was entirely private with no federal or local funds used.
Peachtree City also has several successful non-profit retail organizations—such as Clothes Less Traveled, Well Spring Home Furnishing, the Graceland Thrift Store operated by Christian City, and A Better Way Bargains Thrift Store—that collect gently used clothing and household articles to be resold at lower prices to thrifty shoppers. These stores are managed by volunteers, and their profits are given back to the community through other non-profit organizations that are in need of the funds. This section of every Peachtree City Magazine is designed to highlight the good that people in our community are doing and give guidance as to how everyone can be a part of this great humanitarian effort.

Meet the
WATER GUARDIANS– an All-Volunteer Lake Reservoir Clean-Up Project.
The Water Guardians effort is led by Fayette County Commissioner, Steve Brown.
oating on our beautiful Fayette County lakes is a happy place for many residents. If you are B one of those, consider joining the Water Guardians, a volunteer lake reservoir clean-up project in Fayette County, helping to make our drinking water cleaner.
Volunteers use their kayaks to help collect trash from local reservoirs.
Introduced in March 2016, this all-volunteer group, organizes cleanups of lakes Horton, McIntosh, Peachtree and Kedron during the warm months. Local residents who have access to a canoe or kayak are asked to bring their boats and life vests to the designated lake and spend several hours hauling out trash. The county government supplies bottled water, trash bags and trash grabbers for picking up trash from the lake. Each participant who signs-up receives a free Water Guardians t-shirt. The effort, led by Fayette County Commissioner Steve Brown, has easily filled up a bed of a standard size pickup truck at each event, netting hundreds of pounds of trash. About 30 volunteers help at each event, bringing their kayaks, canoes and walking the banks. Each time the Water Guardians clean a local reservoir, they take a piece of trash and attach it to their “Trashcot” to commemorate the day. “The Water Guardians program is a great opportunity for my fellow water lovers with kayaks and canoes to give back to the community and protect our drinking water,” said Brown. “We have needed a program like this for a long time.” In accordance with lake rules, no one under age 14 is allowed to operate a kayak or canoe solo. All participants must have a life vest and everyone is asked to sign a liability waiver in order to take part in the event. The Water Guardians also solicit the use of small jon boats to bring the full trash bags back to the boat docks. Lake clean-ups are announced on the Water Guardians’ Facebook page and via email to registered participants. To register for upcoming clean-up events, send an email to WaterGuardians@ fayettecountyga.gov and include your name, daytime phone number, contact email address and t-shirt size. 50 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | FALL 2017 – WINTER 2018 |

Help us Feed More People in 2017!
>> style DECOR
What We Did in 2016
• Gave away and distributed $1,000,000 of food every month! • Served 280 different non-profit organizations serving 188,000 needy people in our region • Hosted 400 groups and 3,878 volunteers • Was rated top 1% by Charity Navigator
What We Want to Do in 2017
• Help provide support to the 48 agencies on our Waiting List • Increase our food donated and given away by $250,000 /month • Increase our monthly financial support. More money = more food = more agencies served = less hungry people • Increase our capacity to pick up food donations. We need another Tractor and 2 more semi-trailers.
What you can do!
• Be a provider. Consider making a monthly tax-deductible donation to Midwest Food Bank. We are ranked in the top 1% by Charity Navigator. A donation of $25 = $625 in food distributed. • Be a connector – introduce us to friends that you know who own or run businesses who can provide food, equipment or financial resources • Organize a group to volunteer. Great team-building opportunity for Corporate, Church, School, and Civic groups, Scouts, and Sports teams. Book early, currently scheduling groups 2 months in advance.

THE FAYETTEVILLE CHRISTIAN CHURCH CARES FOR CAREGIVERS Volunteers with a heart for service often visit nursing home residents. But, not everyone thinks of caring for the caregivers. “We are overjoyed with the ongoing generosity of Fayetteville Christian Church,” says Connie Hall, Volunteer Coordinator at Christian City. “For the second year in a row, a volunteer team from the church has shown their love for our staff by preparing and delivering lunch.” Len Romano, Christian City CEO, thanked the volunteers saying, “You are helping Christian City extend Christ’s call to love your neighbor. Through your selfless service, you are providing lifechanging hope to the seniors and children who live here.”

Fayetteville Christian Church Minister Andrew Higle commented, “We believe in the mission and vision of Christian City, and we want to support the physical and spiritual care that is provided to residents.” Church secretary, Helen Thornton, said, “It doesn’t take much to bring a smile to someone’s face.”
KEVIN McCORMICK, SQUARE FOOT MINISTRIES Kevin McCormick is founder of Square Foot Ministry, a faith-based, non-profit in Fayetteville that brings together volunteers from area churches to build and repair homes for needy persons in Fayette County and surrounding areas. “We think volunteering is a 3rd Place for many people. Square Foot Ministry’s vision is to express God’s love to the world by giving those in a position to help, the opportunity to help those who need it. Our vision is to transform challenged neighborhoods into safe, healthy living environments for deserving families by partnering with corporations, churches, non-profits, and the community itself.”

M
arlond and Lana Fyffe are Mom and Dad to eight boys, and their two biological sons. The family of twelve lives together in a cottage at Christian City Children’s Village. Most of the boys are teenagers. According to the Fyffes, “Spiritual mentoring in the Fyffe cottage includes accountability and active service to the Lord. Our greatest teaching moments often happen in the kitchen when the boys gather together and watch - or help - as dinner is prepared. They express concerns and share their thoughts about life. Having a place to feel safe to ask questions is important for all children. Sometimes we don’t have an answer for them, but that’s okay. We encourage them to take their questions to God in prayer.
Our children enjoy being able to give back to their community and we believe that service to others is certainly a characteristic of spiritual maturity. Our boys have volunteered with Southwest Christian Church to help with yard work and clean up at Arbor Springs Elementary School. Prayer is another important part of life in the Fyffe Cottage. Our boys are not shy when it comes to praying, and most will pray without coaxing from us. In general, they are very sincere when they pray for others who are experiencing misfortune. We teach them that prayer is essential to a believer’s walk with the Lord - and it is okay to Pray Big Prayers!”
