FROM THE PUBLISHER: This issue includes several articles telling about how volunteers were the driving force to give us a library, a fire department, and a great 4th of July Celebration. We thank all of the people who contributed to these articles, but in particular we would like to make some special call outs to a group of individuals who were part of that great generation and who shared information and photos with us. Some people who shared their memories and stories were Joel and Geri Cowan, Frances Meaders, Tut Cawthorne, Margaret “Brownie” Jones Holt, Dave and Sallie Satterthwaite, Ginny Ellis, John Weber, Paul Talbott, and Phil Colson. We are indebted to the following people who shared their knowledge and resources to help us provide accurate information so that these articles represent real history. Without the help of Betsy Tyler, Jill Proudy, Paul Lentz, and Rebecca Watts we would not have been so accurate and would have missed seeing some of the historical photos that appeared in Rebecca’s book “Images of America, Peachtree City”. We hope that many newcomers will accept the challenge of the Welcome Sign and plug in to become part of a new generation of volunteers who will make our hometown an even better place to live.

eachtree City folks don’t let a little cold weather stop the fun! Throughout the winter and spring months, you can enjoy great events and entertainment. There’s plenty of fun right here in town, and more activities are just a short drive away. Download the “the Peachtree City app” for up-to-the-minute information on what’s going on in Peachtree City. Diversity is the Hallmark of Peachtree City Events This Fall brings the third annual Southern Hands Artist Studio Tour to the area, slated for Saturday and Sunday, November 14 and 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You’ll get to visit working artists’ studios throughout the county and watch as they demonstrate their talents. All types of art are represented, and it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some unique holiday gifts. A “Top 20 Southeast Event,” the Georgia Renaissance Festival blends circus-style
entertainment and outdoor theater with an arts and craft marketplace, then sets it all in a recreated 16th century European village. The magical theme includes strolling minstrels, jousting knights, hearty food and unique shops. Games, musicians and artisans abound at every turn, along with a village full of friendly characters, such as the infamous Kissing Wenches and even royalty. Festival grounds in Fairburn open 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends from April 16 to June 5, as well as Memorial Day. Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day are important in our community, with patriotic programs held on both holidays at the Veterans’ Memorial in City Hall Plaza. To the east, Fayetteville remembers the fallen with a program at its city cemetery every Memorial Day. Walk or Run— It’s More than Fun! One of the main attractions of Peachtree City is its more than 90-mile cart path system. It’s perfect

for all kinds of activities, including running—and that’s made our fair city a hot spot for racing events. Since 2005, the Peachtree City Running Club and the Peachtree City Rotary Club have joined forces for the Rotary Grand Prix, a series of events at local elementary schools. These runs and walks are designed as a fun way to get youngsters and their families moving and also to raise money for their schools. The series begins in the fall and continues at the schools through spring. Other events sponsored by the PTC Running Club include the Peachtree City Classic every October and a marathon relay in June. For a more intense running experience on the city’s paths, check out the Peachtree City 25K and 50K organized by the Darkside Running Club every November. This year’s event is set for Nov. 8. The club also holds The Running Dead Ultra every March in Senoia and an 8-hour race in nearby Moreland in May of each year.

>> the sign TO WELCOME
F
rom the very beginning in 1959, Peachtree City has opened its arms wide and welcomed visitors and newcomers! As visitors became residents, they contributed their voices and gifts to make their new hometown into an even better place. The story behind the sign The Welcome Sign at the corner of Highway 54 and 74 is a reminder of earlier days when newcomers were increasing at a rapid rate. It is well to remember those days and the attitude that prevailed amongst them: “let’s work together to fix it and make it better.” In the early days, the Welcome Sign was informative, but not so beautiful. It wasn’t until a few individuals combined their creative talents to build a new Welcome Sign, the one we see today. In 1995, the original sign was about 20 years old. Rotarians Bill McDonald, Tom Farr, Don Cobb and Frances Meaders decided the old sign should be replaced. It took the combined efforts of this team, plus many more that they encouraged to join them, to see their vision become a reality. 12 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2015 – SPRING 2016 |
Today’s challenge Our challenge today, as individual citizens, is to follow the model they’ve given us to keep making Peachtree City a better place than when we discovered it. Over the past 56 years, citizen leaders have kept working to improve Peachtree City to make it into what it is today. How do we add our talents and gifts to our city and community to make Peachtree City an even better place to live and raise our families? The remainder of this article is planned to help you see how the organizations depicted on the sign offer you the opportunity to “plug in and participate” in the quest to keep making Peachtree City a great place to call home. Community Service – A great place to start It is easy to just drive past the massive Welcome Sign without thinking about what it really represents. But, the sign displays the logos of some of the prominent non-profit organizations and clubs that are welcoming you to become part of the future of Peachtree City. Each panel represents an “opportunity to serve” and an “opportunity to plug in”. G G | G “Like us” on the Guide and the Peachtree City App facebook pages |G apps

hen considering how Peachtree City took root in its early years, it is easy to see that much of what we all appreciate about this city is here today because of one person or a small group of people who got behind an idea and made it happen. These people had the vision and the persistence to use their talents and abilities to rally public interest and city councils to make their idea become reality. Here are some people in our past, who did just that. Their efforts in those early years brought us more safety in our homes as well
as fun in our town. The stories in this article are just a small beginning. But here are some stories of encouragement. Our First Fire Engine and the Volunteer Fire Department In the very beginning of the city we depended on the Fayette County Fire Department to come to our aid and put out our fires. It was a big county and roads were not as developed as they are today. If a house or business caught on fire,
14 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2015 – SPRING 2016
it was a high probability that the help would arrive too late. In 1966 when Ralph Jones was mayor, Myron Davis “Brother” Leach was an old-time citizen and one of the original landowners. The Leaches were amongst the earliest settlers in Fayette County, dating back before 1850. Brother Leach was one of the first landowners who decided to work with the newcomers and not against them. He was on the City Council in 1965 and became our first fire chief in 1966, as he turned to the citizens to build a fire department made of volunteers.

The city had no budget for a fire department, and no money was available to purchase a fire truck. However, when a fire truck became available from the city of East Point, Ralph Jones personally signed the note from the bank for $3,000 (to get reimbursed later), and the Shell Station next to Willowbend let the City house the fire engine there. Until 1974, the fire department was all volunteers and all costs for equipment were paid out of donations. In 1974, the city for the first time levied a 4.01 mill tax and hired Brother Leach as the first firefighter and chief. (You can read more about the history of the Fire Department by going to the Joel Cowan History Room in the Peachtree City Library.)
Satterthwaite Fire Station 84 serving Kedron was opened in 1994 and named for Sallie Satterthwaite who was one of the original volunteers who served as Emergency Medical Technician, and who was the first woman to serve on the City Council. (Continued on page 16)

O
... and the library began
ur first library was a “book-mobile” serving Peachtree City on a weekly basis out of Griffin. In 1973, many of the 100-plus book-mobile card holders were unhappy with the service and organized themselves into a corporation with the intent to build a library for Peachtree City. The early organizers were Tut Cawthorne, President; Ginny Ellis, Vice President; Geri Cowan, Secretary; Dave Satterthwaite, treasurer; and Phil Colston, advisor. With the help of the Mayor and City Council, the Peachtree City Library Corporation was officially incorporated on May 7, 1973 and registered as a non-profit corporation with the State of Georgia. With a plan for the future, the committee gained support from the developer of the city at that time, Garden City, and also from the Kiwanis and Rotary civic organizations. The first permanent library was opened in a rented room in the City Hall building when the developer vacated the space to move to a new building in Westpark Walk. The library was stocked with donations and managed by volunteers Jenny Pyron and Willard Bryant. In 1979, M.T. Allen was hired as a part-time employee and shortly thereafter, upon the retirement of Bryant, she was made Librarian and later library manager. M.T. Allen provided the needed leadership to build the library through many expansions from 1979 through her retirement in 2007. In 1982, the library moved from its small rented space at Willowbend to a larger space in the Aberdeen Shopping Center. A state grant through the Flint River Regional Library made it possible to build a brand new 10,000 square foot facility that opened on July 15, 1987 in its present location.
an additional $200,000 from a state grant enabled the library to invest in new technology projects. A $4.9 million bond referendum in 2003 provided for another expansion of 11,000 square feet and a complete renovation of the main floor. The present facility was opened on October 31, 2005. In 2000, Peachtree City became a member of the Georgia Library PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services) through its membership with Flint River Regional Library System. PINES created a statewide “borderless library” that provides access to over 9.6 million books and other materials to all Georgians delivered free of charge.
electronic resources including Wi-Fi throughout the facility. Features include a dedicated Children’s Wing and a separate Teen Zone. The Library offers a host of programs for children and adults, as well as meeting rooms for civic groups. While the library is now funded and run solely by the City of Peachtree City, there is still room to participate as a volunteer. In fact, The “Friends of the Library”, lead by Paul Lentz, provides about 40% of the personnel and a substantial amount of funds to supplement the purchase of new titles and bring in authors to talk about their books. For more details about volunteering, visit the library website http://www.peachtree-city.org/index.aspx?NID=125 or http://www.peachtreecitylibraryfriends.org/ or “the Peachtree City App”.

f you talk to enough “old timers,” you will find out that we didn’t always have a 4th of July Parade. In 1975, one of our more active citizens was Sallie Satterthwaite who was “Fayette County Woman of the Year” in 1977. Most agree that it was Sallie’s idea that we needed to have a 4th of July Parade in Peachtree City, according to the Peachtree City pictorial history book, the “Images of America – Peachtree City” sold at the library. It states that In 1975 the Happiness Is … Independence Day celebration included a parade, which started at noon and saw its way to Riley Field, where a flag raising ceremony took place. The parade included floats, antique cars, horses, decorated bicycles and fire and rescue vehicles. We’ve come a long way since then! Last year, in spite of heavy rain, thousands of people, including many from out of town, attended the festivities. It started early in the morning with the 4th of July Parade and ended with a beautiful fireworks display at night. The Peachtree City Recreation/Special Events department says that 115 organizations participated in the parade last year.

IN PEACHTREE CITY o longer do we have to go to our computers and click on our favorite websites for information. Mobile devices are becoming increasingly more important in our daily lives as we learn to use our smartphones and tablets to connect to apps and websites. Traditional methods of getting information and communicating with one another will continue to be important, but social media finds their users prefer to get information from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and apps. Facebook Facebook started as a website (www.facebook.com) in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and four fellow Harvard students. It has now become a social networking service available to anyone 13 years of age and older, is available in 70 languages and reaches 1.44 billion people monthly.

So why is Facebook important to our community today? Like the original Facebook model, people joined Facebook to share photos of themselves, their families, their travels, their lives. As long as you give permission for someone to be your friend, they can see everything that you post on your personal Facebook page, and visa versa. But in the past few years, there has been a growing trend of people and organizations making special Facebook pages that range from public events to service clubs. Everyone has the opportunity to join their special interest group to get information and recommendations. These Facebook pages have taken on a different character from the original personal pages. Special Interest pages and forums are emerging A search of Peachtree City Facebook pages results in 13 special interest pages with the words “PTC” or “Peachtree City”. Bubble”, which reaches over 13,000 members. There are many more Facebook pages focused on other nearby communities and special interest groups outside Peachtree City, as well. While printed media, including newspapers, magazines and phone books, will continue to serve our community, it is interesting to note there are some significant success stories about individual citizens who have started up new Facebook special interest pages and apps. The growth in members on these particular Facebook pages and “downloads” of “the Peachtree City App” make it impossible to deny that a new generation of communication has taken root in Peachtree City. Sparks of Kindness–Public Page; 3,025 Friends Debbie Lowre McFarland started a special interest Facebook page in November 2014 called “Sparks of Kindness”. Debbie says, “There is too much hatred and negativity in the world. I wanted to start a wildfire of kindness instead. Invite your friends to join the group and post your pictures.” Join and post they did! In less than a year, “Sparks of Kindness” Facebook page has grown to over 3,000 friends in 17 countries around the world. Debbie encourages her “Sparkers” to spread smiles with random acts of kindness and to share those acts to inspire others to follow. She said, “It doesn’t take much to make a difference for someone – a compliment, a smile or leaving an encouraging Post-it note in a public area, taking a cart back for someone, etc…. We never know what someone else is going through and perhaps a small gesture could make their day.’’ One “Sparker” recently posted that they had taped some quarters on a public washing machine – it brightened someone’s day. Another person in the group posted that they had paid for the coffee for the person behind them. Success brought with it some problems to overcome. As the “Sparks of Kindness” spread like wildfire as she hoped, Debbie admits that she didn’t see the membership going so far away from Peachtree City – not her original plan. So in February 2015 she began another page

All you have to do is ask to join “Sparks of Kindness” and “Sparking Georgia”! Life in the PTC Bubble–Facebook Page–Closed Group; 13,000 members In August of 2010, Jamie Fukofuka moved to Peachtree City with her husband, Solomone, and their son, Laiatea, when her husband’s company transferred his job to Hartsfield Airport from Portland, Oregon. The family immediately fell in love with Peachtree City. Jamie used their golf cart to see the city, especially on summer weekends when Solomone had the family car. Jamie says, “I wanted a place where people could read all about Peachtree City that included events, places to see, things to do and share things with people that they might not know about in Peachtree City. I wanted the page to be specific about Peachtree City for two reasons: one, I only have my golf cart on weekends so I could only do things that I could get to on my golf cart; and two, our family absolutely loves Peachtree City and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I wanted to tell anyone and everyone about it.” Jamie decided from the beginning that she would make the page a closed group. She says, “I didn’t want to bombard all of my friends that were not in the group with posts that I made in the group. If it is public it shows on your newsfeed. If it is a closed group only the group can see it.” Later she discovered that the closed group had another advantage that allowed eliminating and monitoring spam. A casual posting on Jamie’s FB page by Neal Wauchope, the music director at the Georgia Shrimp Co., lead to the first Krewe of Bulle (Bubble) in Peachtree City. Neal said that he needed

At the present 13,000 members, the “Life in the PTC Bubble” has been the most successful launch of any Facebook page in Peachtree City. The app provides the user with over 20,000 direct links to businesses and events in Peachtree City. Everything can be searched by using voice or by typing in the search bar. & INDOOR FITNESS
Kedron Elementary Heart to Heart 5K and Fun Run. Photo courtesy of the Peachtree City Recreation Department.
OUTDOOR FITNESS Fun on the Paths With over 90 miles of public multi-use paths covering the entire city, and a mild temperature, we can enjoy the outdoors year round. You see lots more than golf carts on the paths. We walk, jog, run, cycle, rollerblade daily. The medical profession all agree that walking regularly provides a solid foundation for good health, and Piedmont Fayette hospital makes it more fun with their “Walk with a Doc” program. Some people enjoy being outdoors with a group of friends. They walk and run with friends from work, church, school, or clubs that they have joined. The Peachtree City Running Club is the second-largest running club in metro Atlanta, and they serve all ages. The club hosts several big races each year, as well as smaller races and fun groups. Fitness and fun at the lakes and ponds Our three major lakes, Lake McIntosh, Lake Peachtree, and Lake Kedron, provide a perfect venue for those of us who love the water. Canoes and kayaks have easy access ramps in all three lakes -swimming is limited to Lake Peachtree. Also, each of these lakes has playgrounds and picnic areas – scan the QR code on the map and you will see a video of them. Huddleston Pond has an exercise course, as well as a children’s playground. 32 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2015 – SPRING 2016

EXPANDS TO OFFER QUALITY SERVICE TO A GROWNING COMMUNITY
A
s Pinewood Studios gets busier and busier and Georgia Military College enrolls more and more students, it just makes sense that the heart of the community, Piedmont Fayette Hospital, grows to accommodate all of the action in the area. Piedmont Fayette currently employs more than 1,450 employees and a medical staff of over 500 physicians. More than 250 volunteers support the hospital in a variety of service areas. Piedmont Fayette is one of the largest employers in the area and has undoubtedly touched nearly every resident in one way or another since opening its doors in 1997. Their reach will go even farther with the expansion project that was announced last summer. Piedmont Fayette CEO Michael Burnett announced the 130,000 square foot expansion in June. The project will more than double the number of examination rooms in the emergency department. There will also be four new floors above the emergency department, leading to all remaining semiprivate rooms being converted into private rooms. The expanded emergency department is due to open late summer 2016 and the remaining parts of the expansion will in early 2017. “This expansion will help us better serve our patients,” Burnett said. “We have grown with Fayette County and we will continue to grow to continue providing world-class, compassionate healthcare to the communities we serve well into the future.” That high quality healthcare and service includes comprehensive cancer care and interventional cardiology among a myriad of other services. In 2014, the hospital became affiliated with the MD Anderson Cancer Network, a program of D The

The Williams Sonoma store, located in the Avenue, brought in local clay artist, Rich Brown, to work his potter’s wheel, inside their front window.
ou don’t have to go far to find something that you need or something in your price range. Peachtree City has a great selection of merchandise. Our local stores have everything the big boxes offer, along with the personal service you want and expect from upscale and personal boutiques. Today it is difficult to categorize the “grocery stores” from the “major retailers,” but they all still retain their brand identity. From groceries to fine furniture, from cosmetics to fine clothing, from household goods to children’s clothing, everything is conveniently located in our 7 shopping centers, without having to travel to nearby cities.
Every week Wednesday through Saturday, every Yard Sale is posted on “the Peachtree City App”. Just type or speak the word “Yard” into the search bar at the top and hit search – every listing will appear. Then touch Map and Driving Directions and you will see how to get to your chosen yard sale. Recently, the listings began to include a few featured items by name – so when you search for your desired item like “baby clothes” or “furniture” the search will bring up any Yard Sale featuring that item.
You’ll find treasured boutiques in our shopping centers as well as high end and name brands. On the bargain end of the scale, you can find some great deals in our local thrift stores and consignment shops throughout town.
If you love organic and fresh veggies, then visit our two farmers markets – the Peachtree City Farmers Market in the Aberdeen Shopping Center and Our Community Farmers Market in McDuff Plaza—they specialize in organic and locally-grown produce. The Peachtree City Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays most of the year and Our Community Farmers Market is open on Saturdays throughout the year.
Yard Sales are another form of shopping. The best way to shop Yard Sales in Peachtree City is to use your Smartphone and “the Peachtree City App”.

and to “support their local farmers and artisans”. Our two local farmers markets both provide an outlet for our farmers and artisans to meet and sell their products directly to the public.
Rich Brown, of Thirty2Potts, sells his creations at the Peachtree City Farmers Market.
Recently, one well known national brand took the idea a step farther. Williams Sonoma, in the Avenue, brought in a local clay artist, Rich Brown, to work his magic in the front window of their store. Rich, for the last several years, has been selling his creations in the Peachtree City Farmers Market, but it was his unique series of cookware that caught the attention of the Williams Sonoma manager. Clay items designed and crafted specifically for chefs, such as a special egg beater bowl with a thumb holder and spout, were produced for shoppers in the store. Rich, was 32 years old when he discovered his love for clay and pottery. So when he started his company it was natural for him to call it “Thirty2Potts”. He can be found in the Peachtree City Farmers Market every Saturday talking to his many customers and friends. He is a perfectionist with athletic skills that give him the unique handeye coordination to make these exceptional products – if you are looking for special gifts – talk to Rich! If he doesn’t have what you are looking for, he can probably make you one – or a whole set. SHOPPING ADVERTISERS

But when it came time to settle down and have time for his family he chose Peachtree City. That was 7 years ago when Neal joined Ant Murphy at the Georgia Shrimp Co. with the idea of bringing professional musicians to the Shrimp.

Popular recording artist Toni Byrd sings regularly at the Shrimp too -- mostly songs made popular by Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald; songs that you love to hear. Occasionally, she will sing a duet with Ant Murphy as they put their souls together to belt out a Sinatra classic. Tommy Dean is a well known Blues and Soul singer who teams up with Neal most Tuesday nights. If you love the blues you will love listening to Tommy accompanied by Neal on piano. Occasionally, some of Neal’s friends are in the Atlanta area and he brings them in for a few sessions. So you never know when you might be surprised! Right now you have a rare chance to get up close and hear a world class, award winning Blues artist ‘Little G Weevil’ who was the winner of the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. City Café & Bakery “Those Two Guys Vintage Jazz”, perform at the City Café and Bakery, where you will enjoy authentic German and Continental cuisine. Owned by German born Jorg and Doreen Schatte, Jorg acquired his culinary skills in Germany and honed his skills while working in New York. He and Doreen have been bringing Fayette County fine food in an authentic European atmosphere since 1998. You can count on the “Those Two Guys Vintage Jazz” duo, popular musicians Rick Massengale on piano and Bill Nelms on Bass, to provide delightful background music for your special night out. They play tunes you love and remember on Friday and Saturday nights except in October, when the Oompa band plays during Oktoberfest. You might also catch guitarist Danny Smith on some weekends, as well!

THE CHILDREN’S VILLAGE
S
A BROKEN FAMILY HEALS
am and Michael’s* whole world turned upside down when their mother lost her battle with cancer. The pain and loss was a heavy burden for the young boys, but tragically it was only the beginning of their hardships. After their mother passed, their father remarried. There was conflict between the boys and the new wife, and eventually she insisted that they be removed from the home. That’s when their father called us. Sam and Michael came to The Children’s Village, and after working with counselors and house parents, they slowly began to heal. Meanwhile, their father started to realize his wife was unstable emotionally. They separated, and ultimately divorced. He missed his sons deeply. He began to reach out to them, and the process of family reunification began to grow. Over time, a return plan was developed, and Sam and Michael were finally reunited with their father. If you‘ve ever wondered if your support of The Children’s Village really makes a difference, the answer is yes. Were it not for generous donations like yours, we would not have been able to help this family heal. God was at work in all of our lives. And when Sam and Michael left us to go home, we felt blessed to have played a small part in His plan.
Life in the Fyffe Cottage Marlond Fyffe, house parent at The Children’s Village for many years, shares some thoughts on teaching the boys in his cottage about serving God. “Spiritual mentoring in the Fyffe cottage includes accountability and active service to the Lord. Our greatest teaching moments often happen in the kitchen when the boys gather together and watch – or help – as dinner is prepared. They express concerns and share their thoughts about life. Having a place to feel safe to ask questions is important for all children. Sometimes we don’t have an answer for them – but that’s okay. We encourage them to take their questions to God in prayer. Our children enjoy being able to give back to their communities and we believe that service to others is certainly a characteristic of spiritual maturity. Our boys have volunteered with Southwest Christian Church to help with yard work and clean up at Arbor Springs Elementary School. Prayer is another important part of life in the Fyffe Cottage. Our boys are not shy when it comes to praying, and most will pray without coaxing from us. In general, they are very sincere when they pray for others who are experiencing misfortune. We teach them that prayer is essential to a believer’s walk with the Lord – and it is okay to Pray Big Prayers!”

50 Years of Loving People Christian City is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Since 1965, Christian City has offered life services and a safe haven for children in crisis, aged 5-17. The majority of children who come to The Children’s Village are victims of abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Christian City offers them a welcoming home environment, loving house parents, and an opportunity to heal and grow. We’d like to thank each and every one who donates to this ministry. It’s only through your generosity that children who have suffered so much are given a second chance. The 500-acre Christian City campus is also home to a full continuum of care for senior adults including multiple independent housing options, assisted living, a nursing and rehab center, alzheimer’s/dementia care unit, hospice and home health care services. More than 1,000 residents live on the campus today in this welcoming community of faith. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.christiancity.org, or call 770-703-2636.
