FROM THE PUBLISHER: Everyone loves our paths – all year long they give us great pleasure! Our editors, writers, and photographers combined their talents once again to give our readers a real treat – “The Great Path System – and why we love it!”. Seven beautiful pages of photos and great articles so you can learn some history and some on-going facts about our paths, too! Take a look at the drone videos taken by Tom Black and Amy Crespo, you will be delighted. See the QR codes on page 6 and page 10. Our newest writer, Shaelyn Comiskey, has lived in our “bubble” most of her life. Now a sophomore at North Georgia University, she looks back with heartfelt nostalgia on what it meant to be able to drive her golf cart around town and to high school. Many people living in our city give back to our community everyday by leading and participating in non-profit service organizations. The “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” section spotlights some of them– from members of the running club doing a path cleanup to some giant money raising events. erhaps more than anything, Peachtree City is known for its network of paved multi-use paths that criss-cross the city from one end to another as well as the ubiquitous golf carts that utilize them. What started out as a way for residents to drive their golf carts to the newly built Flat Creek Golf Course back in the late 1960s has become a way of life. Many towns have tried to emulate the path network but few have succeeded. Why? Mainly, because of its extensiveness. With more than 100 miles of multi-use path winding its way through more than 4,131 acres of dedicated green space, you can get nearly anywhere you want to go via the paths. Bridges and tunnels take us over or under busy streets to restaurants, shopping centers, or a friend’s house. Walk, run, or ride. The scenery is peaceful. The experience is exhilarating. The paths bring something to our daily life that is out of the ordinary, something that is missed when we are away, and something that is hard to explain to others. It is agreed by all that Peachtree City residents love their paths.
How We Use Our Paths
Peachtree City residents use their paths in numerous ways. You will see people walking, running, biking, skating, and of course, driving golf carts. Solitary walkers. Groups of high school cross-country team runners. Young and old. From sun up to sun down. The whir of the golf cart zipping along. The plod plod of runners. Low conversation, kids laughing and talking, strains of music playing, dogs barking. These are the sounds of the paths as we put them to use. 8 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2016 – SPRING 2017 |
Where We Go
It’s all about interconnectivity. Peachtree City was planned to be developed into villages, each with its own neighborhoods, retail center, office and commercial space, recreational facilities, and elementary schools—all of which are interconnected by natural green space and a network of multi-use paths. Villages are connected to villages, and so the path system has grown linking all people to all villages and each other. The vastness of the network allows us to use golf carts as a main mode of transportation. Even with a golf cart speed limit of 20mph, Peachtree City residents choose carts over cars much of the time. Just as in 1969, golfers with bags strapped to the back of their carts, leave their homes intent on their destination. Moms in golf carts merge into school carpool lanes to drop off kids. High schoolers tool down the paths in caravans toward McIntosh High School as traffic guards wave them across roads. You will find golf carts parked at pools, parks, the library, banks, restaurants and grocery stores—about anywhere you can drive a car in Peachtree City, you can drive a golf cart. Many shopping areas have designated golf cart parking places. Braelinn Village Shopping Area has added public charging stations so cart drivers can charge their carts while shopping. There is a row of five outlets on an exterior wall of The Little Clinic between the clinic and El Ranchero as well as another row on an exterior wall of Kroger between it and Papa Johns Pizza. There is also a charging station marked with a (Continued next page) G G “Like us” on the Guide and the Peachtree City App facebook pages | G G apps

sign between the path and the parking lot directly in front of the library and city hall. Peachtree City apartment complexes are golf cart accessible, and many advertise golf cart charging stations. Young teens who cannot drive a car can drive a cart. Older people who are uncomfortable driving a car can drive a cart. Currently, there are about 11,400 actively registered golf carts in Peachtree City. If you own a golf cart, it must be registered at city hall. You are required to show a title and pay for your license decal when you register. For more golf cart rules and regulations, see page 47.
Celebrating On Our Paths
Besides being a means to reach a destination, the paths are also the focal point, or even the reason, for many events and celebrations. They are integral to our Fourth of July. Specially decorated golf carts take part in the morning parade. Flags, banners, and streamers wave from carts as residents travel the paths to parades, festivities, and the best fireworks in the area. For December’s Hometown Holiday, a parade of golf carts follows Santa on the Trail of Lights from The Fred to Drake Field. Even Halloween takes on a new twist with streets jammed with golf carts, decorated with spider webs and string lights, taking kids Trick or Treating. The expansive network of paths also provides a means for a number of big sporting events in town as thousands run in the DIVA Half Marathon and 5K, the Annual Peachtree City Classic, and more. The Grand Prix race series, which benefits local schools, supports several hundred runners on Saturday mornings scattered throughout the school year. | www.peachtree-city-magazine.com | WINTER 2016 – SPRING 2017 | 9

Growing Up with the Paths by Shaelyn Comiskey

24/7 access to the path systems, it’s easy to take them for granted. We don’t realize how often we use the paths and how beautiful some of the stops along the way are. Lake Peachtree’s boat docks are one of the most popular places to go on a golf cart. During the day and evening, the strip of grass between the path and the lake is a good place to throw a blanket and have a picnic or meet with friends. Once the sun begins to set, it is the perfect place to park your golf cart and watch one of the most gorgeous sunsets in the city. For those who seek an adventure, try Flat Creek Boardwalk. The path has one boardwalk on each side, so it is convenient to park your golf cart or bike and walk directly onto the shaded boardwalk. For entertainment, join the trail of golf carts making their way to The Fred to see a concert on Friday or Saturday night. One thing to keep in mind is that the paths are not restricted to golf carts. Because the paths are separate from the roads and wind throughout the city, they are a great place to exercise. People are constantly running, walking, biking, rollerskating, and skateboarding, while others take leisurely walks with their dogs or go on bike rides with their families. Peachtree City is a planned community that was built around the use of golf carts and paths, so it’s no surprise that these golf carts and paths play such a large role in the residents’ lives. While the paths are great for exercise and golf cart rides, the best part about them is that they connect our city. They connect destinations, but they also connect people. No matter what age you are or what your life story is, you will see total strangers on the cart path who will welcome you with a warm smile or a friendly wave. This friendliness that is found both on and off the cart paths is part of what makes Peachtree City the one-of-a-kind community that it is.
hen you tell people from out of town that you take your golf cart to school or the grocery store, they give you a look of disbelief and proceed to kindly laugh and question why. Not everyone can say that they live in a town where golf carts are one of the main forms of transportation. With well over 11,000 registered carts, you can see one buzzing around just about anywhere. I have lived in Peachtree City for 17 years, and I still remember going with my parents to purchase our first golf cart when I was five. It is only now that I am away at school that I realize how much of my time at home was actually spent on a golf cart. When I was a little girl, my mom would pick me up from school and take me to soccer practice on the golf cart. When I turned 12, I was allowed to drive throughout the city with my parents. By the time I had my driver’s permit, I could drive the golf cart to McIntosh High School every morning. I loved my golf cart adventuring days, but none of them would have been possible without the paths. With over 100 miles of paths throughout the city, it is possible to go just about anywhere in a golf cart. In many instances, it is easier and faster than taking a car. With G

Our paths meander through wooded and park-like green space taking us to just about anywhere we want to go in Peachtree City. Here are some selected cart path sections to explore in a golf cart, on a bike, running or walking.
Lake Peachtree Loop
North Peachtree Parkway to Kedron Village Shopping
The path along North Peachtree Parkway is one of the hilliest and steepest in town. Along the way, you will wind through woods, bridges and tunnels, passing much of Lake Kedron, its boat dock and ramp, turtles sunning on rocks, squawking geese, and lovely neighborhoods. You will end up at Kedron Village Shopping Area where you will find dining and shopping.
Peachtree Crossing to Aberdeen Village Shopping
This network of paths passes through the heart of Flat Creek Golf Course, the city’s first golf course. You will meander along past tees and greens and over Flat Creek where it flows through the course. End your ride at Aberdeen Village Shopping Area, the town’s first village retail center built in 1973. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, you will see white tents marking the Peachtree City Farmer’s Market.
Aberdeen Village to Lake Peachtree
This path route begins at one of Peachtree City’s most iconic landmarks—the Bridge over Hwy. 54 built in 1972. You will pass by Village Green Park, the 9-hole
The Lake Peachtree Loop is one of the most popular path networks for runners and walkers. Many start the loop on the path in front of City Hall Complex. Going clockwise, you will cross over the bicycle bridge built in the early 1970s. The path, running directly beside the lake, offers great views. You will pass Battery Park boat ramp and dock and the earthen dam, built by city founder Joel Cowan in 1960. On the west side of the loop, the path runs through the first neighborhoods of Peachtree City—built before the paved paths were planned. A patchwork system of sidewalks and later-built path will lead you back to city hall.
Lake Peachtree Dam through Flat Creek Wetlands
From the Lake Peachtree dam and spillway on Kelly Drive, take the path system south through the Flat Creek Wetlands. You will pass the backside of the 50-acre McIntosh Trail Recreation Complex, where Frederick Brown Jr Amphitheater and other recreational facilities are located. This is also the starting point for the Flat Creek Nature Preserve, a 513-acre wetland that extends south 3.5 miles along Flat Creek. The path, which crosses the nature area boardwalk, winds through the wetlands all the way to Crosstown Road and Braelinn Village Shopping Area. Watch for wildlife! (Continued on page 12)

In 1969, once Flat Creek
Golf Club was opened, the idea of a “golf cart path” began to take shape.

South Peachtree Parkway to Three Ponds
This side of Peachtree City is less hilly than the north side so this path, which mostly parallels South Peachtree Parkway, is flatter, winding through woods and neighborhoods. This path is a portion of the course in the Peachtree City Classic, the DIVA Half Marathon and 5k, and other road races in Peachtree City. The path will take you to Luther Glass Memorial Park, also known as the Three Ponds area—a wide open, green space for playing, fishing and picnicking.
History of the Paths Did you know that back in 1959 when Peachtree City was first incorporated, paths were not on the minds of planners? No paths, only sidewalks were built along Hip Pocket Road, the town’s first area of homes. It was nearly 10 years later, once Flat Creek Golf Club was opened that the idea of a “golf cart path” began to take shape. Residents who played golf wanted to drive their golf carts from home to the golf course. In the late 1960s, a path was constructed from the Hip Pocket area to Flat Creek golf course. Next, paths were built in the Golf View neighborhood so the residents could get to the golf course with their own carts. But difficulties were developing. It was against Georgia law for golf carts to use city streets. The Peachtree City City Council began requesting a change to the law to allow golf carts to travel throughout the new town. So began Peachtree City’s great “golf cart controversy” as city founder Joel Cowan likes to call it. In 1972, the first master plan for the city included villages, the zoning of greenbelt areas, and 23 miles of paved path. A wooden bridge over Highway 54 for pedestrians and bicyclists was built to connect the Hip Pocket side of town with development on the north side of Highway 54. In June, Gov. Jimmy Carter turned down the City Council’s request for intervention on behalf of the city concerning the golf cart controversy of allowing motorized golf carts to operate on public roads. Although the City Council passed its own ordinance allowing carts on roads the summer of 1973, it was not until 1974, that state legislation finally passed allowing golf carts on the city’s streets. From that point on, residents and their golf carts had easier access to the towns neighborhoods, parks, golf course, services, and retail 12 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2016 – SPRING 2017 |

centers—including the newly opened Aberdeen Village Shopping Center In September 1974, construction began on a bicycle bridge over Lake Peachtree, connecting Aberdeen and Glenloch villages. The developer also began building cart path connections throughout the northern half of Glenloch Village. The City adopted a Land Use Plan in 1985 and a Comprehensive Master Plan in 1991. By this time, golf cart paths had developed into multi-use paths, and path connections built through 4,131 acres of dedicated open space, connecting village neighborhoods, retail centers, office and commercial space, recreational facilities and elementary schools was a signature part of the plan for Peachtree City. Today, Peachtree City residents enjoy over 100 miles of multi-use path.
Path Maintenance It is a big undertaking to keep up Peachtree City’s current 104.5 miles of path. Here’s what city staff have to say about maintaining Peachtree City’s most talked about asset. For 2016, $665,000 was budgeted for paving materials. Add in labor and equipment, and the total is closer to $1,800,000, which will get 10 miles of newly paved path this year. This is budgeted from the General Fund, which is made up of property/ad valorem taxes (40%); Local Option Sales Taxes (20%), other taxes, fees, licenses, and permits. Maintenance in ongoing throughout the year. The condition of paths is rated every couple of years on a scale of 1–100. Lowest rated paths get paved first. The city has a list of path connections it would like to include in the Master Plan. We also consider citizen requests and areas that have limited access. Currently, no funding is designated for new paths but several connections are included in the projects list for the SPLOST referendum in March Residents can help to keep paths beautiful by preventing and removing litter. Residents should report problems (pot holes, fallen trees or branches, etc.) by calling 770-487-5183. The best way to communicate with the Public Works Department is to note the 4 digit number on the nearest yellow reflective marker on theGpath since they use those numbers to respond to emergencies and problems. STAYING FIT W
By Shaelyn Comiskey
hen it comes to staying fit, many people become discouraged by their goals, body type, and schedules. However, personal fitness should not be a problem in Peachtree City due to the wide variety of local gyms and fitness programs. The opportunities are endless, and there is a place for everyone. Despite the differences between styles, trainers, and techniques, all of the gyms and programs have something in common: each one welcomes all of their clients, focuses on their relationships with their clients, and is 100% dedicated to helping their clients reach their goals. Pure Barre Even though these classes often utilize the ballet barre, clients don’t need a ballet background! This 55-minute full body workout consists of isometric movements with small or no weights that can ultimately help you get the same results as with heavy weights. Throughout the class, trainers remind their clients that the change happens when they “embrace the shake.” Pure Barre instructor Amy Bohrer says that the workout “is a challenge, but everyone leaves smiling.”
World Gym With over 100 classes per week between their 2 locations, World Gym has something for everyone. Their class schedule offers a different class at the same time each day to encourage cross training. The gym creates a “prescription for fitness” by pairing their programs with their clients’ goals. If group classes aren’t for you, personal trainers are there to help you reach your goals. Jim Christian, an unconventional 24 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2016 – SPRING 2017 |
strength trainer, uses only one major set of repetitions per exercise, and it has proven to get better results than conventional approaches. Fitness 54 On the inside, Fitness 54 looks like your typical gym, but the outside is one-of-akind. The backyard of the gym is complete with a sundeck for lounging, a picnic area, an outdoor pool, and a beach volleyball court. According to Maurice Alexander, the gym’s manager, the “non-intimidating” environment helps clients focus on “working at fitness and conditioning—not building big muscles.” Orange Theory Orange Theory is a small gym that bases its one-hour workouts off of your heart rate. The classes are designed to help you towards your goal while building confidence that can be taken out of the gym. Due to the small size of the classes, clients can form relationships with each other and with the trainers in order to create a support system. Nick Love, the regional trainer, says, “The trainers know that everyone is different with different goals. They embrace changes and celebrate the clients.” RowAmerica Rowing is a great way to stay fit for people of all ages. RowAmerica has programs for middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults. One of the great things about this program is that it does not require any previous experience. Despite the misconception

Georgia Parkour Academy Owner Coach Ryan was a two-time competitor on American Ninja Warrior, so this facility has several obstacles that are similar to those on the show. Office manager Lynn Jones says, “Parkour helps you figure out the limits and strengths of your body and makes it fun and exhilarating for you to improve on them.” Additionally, this facility also offers tumbling and cheerleading programs. i Other gyms and fitness programs in the area include Crossfit, Go Performance, Snap Fitness, Explosive Mechanics, Operation Boot Camp, Curves, The Bridge and more! If the gym environment is not the place for you, try Gym Guyz – they come to you. There are other fitness programs and groups throughout the community designed to fit your needs. For instance, try taking advantage of the cart path system and the exercise equipment on the perimeter of Huddleston Pond.

Piedmont Fayette Gets Better Images Through 3D Tomography
S
ome of the greatest advances in medicine have come in the field of imaging. One of the many new technologies that Piedmont Fayette has started using in the past year is 3D Tomography. Tomography is imaging by sections. Instead of a traditional mammogram, which produces one image, tomography takes multiple images in one millimeter slices and produces a 3D image of the breast. This is especially beneficial for the radiologist to analyze the complexities of breast tissue and can also provide women with dense breast tissue a better image than a traditional mammogram. “3D Tomography uses the same amount of radiation as a traditional mammogram and the process usually only takes a few more seconds than traditional mammography,” said radiologist David Bodne, MD. “There are big differences in the type of image produced though and we can detect smaller cancers.” The 3D Tomography machine at Women’s Imaging at Piedmont Fayette produces multiple images to create a 3D image.
To learn more about 3D Tomography, call the Women’s Imaging Center at Piedmont Fayette at 770.719.7007. Ee

LOOKING FOR GENTLY USED? Encore Interior Consignment photos by Marlene J. Koslowsky.
If you are looking to buy some “gently used” items, Peachtree City has several consignment and thrift stores, you may want to browse. Encore Interior Consignment Recently opened by Peachtree City resident Dana Ritenour, Encore Interior Consignment is a retail store filled with an array of items to decorate your home. This consignment shop only accepts quality, pre-owned, home furniture and decor—no personal items. Most of the store’s inventory comes from people who are downsizing or moving. Clients can bring items to the store, or the store will pick up entire rooms without charge and move contents to its 5,000-squarefoot space. Store coordinator Tonya O’Rourke displays items into attractive groupings that promote quicker sales. You will find furniture of all styles—sofas, chairs, dining tables and chairs, cabinets and much more— as well as every type of home decor, including rugs, draperies, art work, lamps, and seasonal items. Encore Interior Consignment accepts any furniture or home decor items that appear to be in good to likenew condition. The store will not accept any items that have been damaged by rips, tears, puncture, fading,
stains, or odors. It asks that sellers clean the items as cleaning helps in pricing and makes the item more like new to buyers. The store offers delivery services as well as pick up. The store also offers design services, such as home decorating, color consultation, custom artwork, and chalk painting furniture. Braelinn Village Shopping Area 266 S. Peachtree Pkwy., 770-629-2409; encoreconsignptc.com Clothes Less Traveled The first thrift shop in Peachtree City, Clothes Less Traveled was established in 1997 as a single store front on Huddleston Road. Co-founders MaryAnn Cox and Joan Velsmid needed a place to donate or sell the items that were being dropped off at MaryAnn’s office at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Over the years, the non-profit thrift shop steadily grew and expanded its space. Today, the non-profit operates out of a 20,000-square-foot building on South Highway 74. A volunteer Board of Directors, along with very dedicated volunteers, has generated a non-denominational, faithbased initiative that touches the lives of many in the community. All of the proceeds, above expenses, are donated to local 501(3)C charitable organizations or given as scholarships.

PEACHTREE CITY– PERFECT FOR YOUR SHOPPING DESIRES
S
ince 1973, when its first retail center opened, Peachtree City has witnessed a steady growth in shopping. Today, with a large, upscale outdoor shopping mall—The Avenue; 3 large shopping centers—Braelinn, Kedron and Wilshire; and 14 other major shopping areas (all of which are located on the pull-out map in this publication), there is no reason to travel anywhere else to shop! You will find a wide range of shops in town—everything from big boxes to upscale national chains to locally owned boutiques. You will also find a diversity of products sold—gifts, clothing, shoes, furniture, jewelry, bicycles, antiques, groceries, toys, musical instruments, pets, sporting goods, fire arms and golf carts to name a few. Many of these shops are owned and operated locally. For example, the locally owned Smith and Davis, established in 1965, is one of the area’s oldest operating stores. Located just east of the Peachtree City city limits, the store originally carried work wear, shoes and dress apparel for the mostly rural communities. As the community 34 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | WINTER 2016 – SPRING 2017 |
grew and changed, so did the Smith and Davis inventory. Today, Smith and Davis is known for its quality, brand-name apparel and shoes, especially trending brands like Southern Marsh, Simply Southern, Patagonia, Kavu, Ray-Ban, Toms and Chaco. Another locally owned store, Bicycles Unlimited, has been Peachtree City’s hometown bike shop since 1996. The shop sells and repairs bicycles, host rides, offers fittings and training (including a new spin class), and “loves everything cycling.” Named one of America’s best bike shops by the National Bicycle Dealers Association in 2014, Bicycles Unlimited has recently moved into a new building in the Braelinn Village Shopping Area. When it comes to shopping, Peachtree City has it all—everything you need at a price that will fit your budget.

E Peachtree City Farmers Market goers wait for Maine lobster delights at the “Cousins Maine Lobster” food truck. Owners of “Cousins Maine Lobster” landed a partner from ABC’s “Shark Tank to help build their business.
FOOD TRUCKS ARE FUN! Cousins Maine Lobster Started by two cousins in 2012, the first truck opened to a line 50 people deep. Cousins Maine Lobster quickly made a name for itself, catching the attention of the producers at ABC’s “Shark Tank” and landing a partner who helped them build their business. Often found at the Peachtree City Farmers Market, the truck offers dishes like Maine Lobster Roll, Lobster Quesadilla, Shrimp Tacos, and New England Clam Chowder. cousinsmainelobster.com
ver since we saw actor Jon Favreau rustle up Cuban sandwiches from his food truck grill in the 2014 movie “Chef,” we have been enamored with food trucks! And why not? Food trucks are fun! What could be better than standing in line on a beautiful day, ordering some Maine lobster or a New Orleans snoball from a food truck, and eating lunch on a picnic table under the pines? More and more food trucks are making their way to Peachtree City from Atlanta
Deep South Biscuit Truck Deep South Biscuit Truck makes hot, flaky, buttermilk gourmet biscuit sandwiches piled high with ingredients like BBQ pulled pork, fried chicken, pimento cheese, shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, and portobello mushroom gravy with sage. Menu items are made from scratch from locally sourced foods. Winner of The Critics Choice Award “Best Biscuit in America” in the 2016 International Biscuit Competition, Deep South donates a portion of every dollar’s profit to organizations like “The Giving Kitchen” and “Our Sisters House at the Atlanta Mission.” G

or the surrounding area. You will find them on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Peachtree City Farmers Market, at special events, or perhaps at your neighbor’s house catering a private party. Here are some of the food trucks that frequent the area. Some are attached to local restaurants, but most are part of the growing, national street food phenomenon of chefs creating dishes and cooking them from their restaurant on wheels.
Tex’s Tacos Founded in 2010 by two long-time pals as they washed down homemade tortillas with frozen margaritas, Tex’s Tacos is a fully-equipped restaurant on wheels that serves up an array of ‘Nueva Texicana’ eats—tacos, quesadillas, loaded lime fries, and a whole lot more. PROTECT YOUR LANDSCAPE THIS WINTER
W
ith winter upon us, yard work is probably the last thing on your mind. If you have not winterized your landscape, however, now is definitely the time. In addition to freezing temperatures, plants also are subjected to some fairly harsh winds during the winter months. Add to that, the sleet, rain and snow that is always a possibility and you quickly can see why a little plant protection is important. So, how can you protect your plants from the winter months? Here are some tips to get started.

them indoors for the winter. Barring that, merely moving your plants away from the elements is often enough to sustain them through the colder months. A covered deck, patio or porch are all great options when you cannot bring your plants indoors. The key is to make sure that your plants are protected from the cold winds, freezing rain, and snow. For added protection, you can wrap the base of your pots to provide extra warmth to the roots.

In-Ground Plants Harvest as much as you can from your annual flower beds and then pull up the remaining plants. Before putting down mulch, you should give your beds a thorough tilling. This helps to revive the soil and prepare it for planting next spring. If you want to add compost to your soil now, you can use some of the leftover plant matter that you just pulled from your beds. Otherwise, buy some compost material to work into the soil. Last of all, put down your mulch, and you are ready for spring. Perennials should be pruned closely, cleaning away any dead matter that might be lingering around them. Next, add a generous amount of mulch to keep the roots warm during the winter. If possible, water your plants thoroughly before the first hard freeze. Anytime freezing precipitation is in the forecast, you can add some additional protection by covering the bed with a wrap or cover. One note of caution here: the covers typically do not provide a great (Continued on page 46)

temperature is above freezing. Trees and Shrubs Just before the first hard freeze, give your trees and shrubs a good, deep watering so that they have a
generous water supply for the winter. Mulching around the base of the plants will help to insulate the roots and allow the soil to retain its moisture longer. i

PROTECTING OUR PATHS W
ith over 100 miles of multi-use paths to patrol, the Peachtree City Police Department stays quite busy. Three methods of patrol are presently used to patrol the path system on a daily basis -mountain bikes, all-terrain vehicles and motorized carts. Officers receive extensive training and must be certified on these alternative patrol vehicles. This year the Viking motorized vehicle was added to give the officers a new tool that will enable them to assist our citizens who need help. The Viking vehicle has a winch that can be used to pull a cart out of a ditch, a passenger seat to assist someone in need a ride, and a large first aid package.
Top Left: Sergeant Brian Eden, ATV ; Bottom left: Corporal Stephen Stoyell, Viking; Right: Officer Wendell Warren, Mountain Bike
All of these vehicles are in contact via the mobile command center and are supplemented by the Fire Department’s first aid vehicles at all major events.

T
he 2017 Winter Gala at Pinewood Atlanta Studios is scheduled for Saturday January 7, 2017. This will be the 4th Annual black tie event, and is privately funded to provide support for 17 local charities. The event will take place in Stage 17, Pinewoods newest 40,000 square foot stage. This year’s theme will feature an Enchanted Forrest and will incorporate a host of fun, creative experiences coordinated by C&S Film Concierge and supported by the generosity of over 40 vendors at Pinewood Atlanta Production Centre. C&S Experience Planners, Sally Herman and Cyndi Plunkett are excited about this year’s event, especially as the additional space will allow for even greater contributions to the local non-profits that participate. The goal of the GALA is to be the hottest ticket of the year and a once-a-year opportunity to experience the magic of Hollywood in Fayette County.
Last year’s spy themed Gala raised over $150,000 for local charities. Approximately 600 guests purchased tickets from local charities and were treated to spy movie experiences, including a custom make-up trailer where bruises, wounds and glamour make-up were administered. Guests interacted with animal actors, got action shots in front of a Green Screen and had the opportunity to bid on items at the silent auction. In addition, America’s Got Talent Finalist, Joe Castillo preformed his Sand Art to music. The Sand Art was then auctioned off for the charities. A fabulous meal was catered by Hanna Brother’s Extreme Motion Picture Caterers. Guests danced the night away to Rupert’s 10 piece Orchestra. The 2017 event will feature even more experiences and start the new year off right. Among the-non profits that benefited from the 2016 Gala were: A Better Way Ministries, Association of Village Pride, Boy Scouts of America, Camp Southern Ground, Fayette Senior Services, Bloom, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Fireman’s Foundation, Real Life Center, Promise Place, Midwest Food Bank, Southern Conservation Trust and Southern Motor Speedway.

Children’s Village House Parent Celebrates 40 Years
K
ay Harkness has been called “Mom” by hundreds of boys over the past four decades. In June 2016, she celebrated her 40th anniversary as a Christian City staff member where she is the lead house parent at The Children’s Village. Since joining Christian City Home for Children in 1976 as a house parent, Kay’s home has always been a boys’ cottage. In fact, parenting boys was second nature to Kay. She was one of six children in her family and the only girl. “Growing up with five brothers certainly helped prepare me for my house parenting role at Christian City,” she said. After learning about Christian City through their church and Atlanta Christian College (now Point University), Chuck and Kay Harkness and their 2-year-old son, Jamin, moved to Christian City’s campus in Union City to become house parents. Eight boys were under their care initially. When their daughter, Julie, was born the next year, they moved into a larger cottage where they cared for 12 boys in addition to their own two children. Her husband passed away in the ‘80s, but Kay stayed on. “We came here to serve and take care of the kids,” she said. When asked what has kept her here so long, Kay said, “There never seemed to be a good time to leave. It’s hard to part with the kids. I love Christian City. It’s home. And I always felt like there was a child at Christian City who needed me to stay.” Now, Kay is the lead house parent in the Crisis Stabilization Cottage on the campus of The Children’s Village at Christian City, which was founded in 1965. Children who come to the Union City campus from Safe Place locations like Quik Trip stations and local fire stations are primarily runaway and homeless youth. “They come in at all hours of the day and night, so we are ready 24/7,” Kay said. “Most of the children who come here in crisis have only the clothes on their backs, and some haven’t eaten in a day or more.” Children who come here via Safe Place can stay up to 21 days. If efforts to reunite a child with his or her parents are not successful, usually due to issues in the child’s home, the child may become a resident of The Children’s Village.
“I believe in our mission,” Kay said. “Christian City is a God-inspired development. Our goal is to reunite children with their biological parents. If that’s not possible, this campus becomes their home.” When asked what is so great about Christian City, Kay quickly answered, “The people who are here to serve are the greatest. The house parents, churches, volunteers and all our supporters from the community make Christian City what it is.” Now that she has passed the 40year mark in her career, Kay is looking toward retirement. But, she’s not planning on leaving Christian City. “When I retire, I plan to move into a senior living patio home at Christian City and spend more time with my six grandchildren,” she said. In fact, Kay is “grandmother” to many more. Scores of boys who have called Kay “Mom” over the years are now married men with their own families, and she enjoys hearing from them. They reminisce about the “early cottage” days when the children played ball on a field where the Welcome Center is currently located, and the swimming pool in the nursing and rehab center was an outdoor pool for the children. Gone are the days when the children and their house parents did all the lawn maintenance on the campus as well as maintaining the Harper cemetery at Lester Road and Jonesboro Road. “We even maintained the roadside,” Kay said. “Some memories are more enjoyable than others,” she said with a laugh. “Indeed, to serve for over 40 years is not only remarkable, but also indicative of Kay’s calling to this ministry,” said Philip Kouns, Chief Operating Officer of The Children’s Village. “Kay Harkness is one of those people that God has used in a mighty way! She has prepared and influenced young men in a significant way to leave the safety and comfort of The Children’s Village at Christian City and go into the marketplace, every branch of the military, and the Christian ministry to serve others as they were served here at Christian City. Thank you, Kay Harkness, for loving our children. Well done, thou good and faithful servant!” To learn more about The Children’s Village at Christian City, visit christiancity.org.
