The importance of

STRONG CORE MUSCLES

Do you know how much you rely on your core muscles? So many basic, every day tasks rely on strong core muscles – bending over, turning to look over your shoulder, sitting up straight, standing. Those are simple, basic tasks, but many exercise, have physical jobs, and do housework and yardwork regularly. In fact, even those who spend most of the day at a computer will benefit from a strong core, as a strong core takes the strain off the lower back and assists with posture. If your core muscles aren’t strong, you may experience balance and instability issues, chronic pain, and higher risk of injury. At OSR Physical Therapy, our team can assess your core strength and determine if that is an area that needs to be focused on. The core is not limited just to abs – the mid and lower back is included in the core as well. It’s important to do exercises that include all of the core muscles and not just the abs. Some exercises that may be recommended to improve core strength include: •

Bridge: lying on your back with your knees bent, raise the hips off the floor, focusing on tightening your abdominal muscles and avoiding tilting the hips.

Regular or modified plank: lying on your stomach, raise your body up so that you’re resting on your forearms, focusing on tightening your abdominal muscles and avoiding arching your back. A regular plank is when you’re balanced on your toes; a modified plank is when you’re balanced on your knees.

Superman: lying on your stomach with arms straight out in front of you, lift both your arms and legs off the floor, keeping your eyes forward.
