COMMON CAUSES of
NECK PAIN Neck pain is an extremely common complaint among adult Americans and can lead to headaches and referred pain down into
the shoulders, arms, and fingers.
While an injury like a car accident or a condition like arthritis could be the cause of your neck pain, there are several other causes that are preventable.
Overuse of Electronics The prevalence of smartphones and tablets is causing a common condition that medical professionals are calling “text neck.” When the head and neck are in a neutral position, the head weighs between ten and twelve pounds. However, most will look down to use their phone – and at even a fifteen degree angle, the weight of the head more than doubles to approximately 27 pounds. The amount of weight only increases, and many will spend hours per day looking down at their device. The long-term effects are unknown at this point, but in the short-term, this can cause pain and inflammation in the muscles of the neck. Poor Posture Think about your favorite way to watch tv or read – is it lying down with your head propped up? When relaxing, many people don’t realize that their neck is in an unnatural or unsupported position, and prolonged or repeated instances of this can eventually lead to chronic pain. Another common problem is the amount of time that most adult Americans spend sitting hunched over a computer. Very few will pay attention to their posture or even realize it’s a problem, but will experience neck pain and not be sure of the cause. Stress and Anxiety While it may not come to mind when people think about causes for neck pain, stress and anxiety can be contributors to neck pain. Muscles in the neck can become stiff and tight with stress, which can then lead to referred pain in the form of headaches. When you visit OSR Physical Therapy for neck pain, our team will perform a thorough evaluation and may ask questions about exactly where on your neck the pain happens, if you have shoulder pain or headaches, and if you have pain that travels down the arms. Your therapist will create a treatment plan that is designed to specifically help relieve your symptoms and increase strength, flexibility, and range-of-motion. The therapist may give you several exercises to work through, apply heat or cold therapy, use ultrasound, or perform manual manipulation. Additional exercises for posture may also be recommended.
