The most unexpected joy of fatherhood is how much it changes your perception on the important things in life. My kids have taught me a sense of independence and freedom. We’re very nurturing and caring as parents, but we want to make sure that they have their own personalities. We want to give them the space to create their own lives. Right now, Henri is into trains so he loves anything Thomas the Tank Engine or with wheels and tracks. Harriette loves arithmetic and learning. She’s a bit of an overachiever! My favourite Father’s Day memory would be the ones that I had with my father, who I’ll have lunch with this year on Father’s Day. I would always build him something, like a model boat or a plane; some object that he could keep. Creativity is the biggest thing in my world so I try to instill ideas around music, art and design in my children, too. Becoming a dad was truly the first time I felt useful. It’s given me a purpose and a love that I didn’t understand existed. That, and I had no idea how happy it would make me to see my boys in matching tracksuits. My kids have taught me patience and, “It wasn’t my idea. It just happened.” I’ve also discovered that it’s futile trying to have a work call with kids in the car. Spending time with them often involves simple things like asking them to come to the supermarket. As a family, we find it just as fulfilling as the other things we do, like kicking a footy, and going to galleries, museums or the zoo. My first Father’s Day with Bugsy was about as special as it gets. I love the day because it means a moment of relaxation. I don’t feel any pressure to have to do anything. Adding colour to my world means finding space and taking time to think, create, listen, love and reflect. When you become a father you become more in touch with your emotions. Often men aren’t taught emotional self-awareness and good communication skills, but my relationship with Mila has taught me that opening up emotionally actually brings joy. I try to instill in Mila a sense of cultural connection and pride as a young Kamilaroi woman. As an artist’s daughter, Mila can get a bit sick of art exhibitions, but I do love going to a good show with her and talking about what we see. She has taught me about taking better care of the environment and supporting things like sustainable fishing (she’s an aspiring marine biologist).
