JONES magazine is published on the land of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation.

David Jones acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters we now call Australia, from the islands of the Torres Strait to the mountains of Tasmania, from the rivers of the east coast to the red earth of the west coast and into the sandy, rocky heart of this continent.

We pay our respects to all First Nations peoples, past and present, for their generosity and custodianship of Country.

As autumn begins, there’s a sense of anticipation in the air – for a change in weather, but also for a new approach to how we think about our wardrobes, homes, self-care routines and, importantly, how we shop with confidence. We know in today’s climate many Australians are feeling the impact of the rising cost of living. At David Jones, we recognise the importance of getting true value for your money. That’s why we’re focused on providing exceptional quality that stands the test of time and continues to deliver value, long after your purchase. Our dedication to offering value for money is reflected in our Price Promise^. If you find the same item at a lower price elsewhere, we’ll match it. This is not just about being competitive on price; it’s about delivering lasting value for our customers – whether it’s through our expertly curated selection of the finest international and Australian brands, our outstanding

customer service, or our dedication to sustainability. In this issue of JONES, we’re embracing new trends while staying true to the values that matter most: quality, sustainability and value. The theme, Confidence is Everything, runs throughout the issue, with more pages of shopping inspiration than ever before, including picks from Friends of David Jones such as Renee Bargh, the Hon. Julie Bishop, Megan Gale and Nathan McGuire. Our fashion shoot, captured at the Powerhouse in Sydney’s Castle Hill, highlights not only this season’s must-have pieces but also our important partnership with Australia’s largest museum group. Confidence is at the core of everything we do, both as individuals and as a retailer: it guides how we carry ourselves, how we interact and how we shop. At David Jones, we want you to feel that confidence in yourself, and feel it every time you shop with us, whether instore, online or on our new mobile app. With our expertly curated selection, world-class service and beautifully reimagined stores, we aim to make shopping easier, smarter and more rewarding. This season is for the savvy shopper who knows David Jones is the destination for the best style at the best price. We’re proud to be a trusted store – like no other.

OLIVER BEGG

Photographer

Shooting our fashion stories at the Powerhouse in Castle Hill “among so much history” provided a unique canvas for Begg. “The pieces in the mechanical room are visually so different to the locations we usually use in fashion.” While inspired by this season’s fashion, it’s a more home-focused item currently on his wish list. “My wife has entered her baking era so I’ve got my eye on a KitchenAid for her.”

LUCIANNE TONTI Journalist and author

The fashion editor and author of Sundressed: Natural Fibres and the Future of Fashion took a deep dive into how we shop now for this issue’s feature story (see p30). An advocate for making more sustainable fashion choices, each piece in her wardrobe is well-considered. So what’s she coveting for this season? “I’ve had an eye out for an oversized leather bomber for a while.”

MEET MARIMEKKO

Finnish fashion and homewares favourite Marimekko will be hosting its first fashion show in Australia, popping up at David Jones Elizabeth Street from 4 May to 28 June. The brand has also launched Maridenim, a collection based on the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign guidelines, which follows circular design principles. Three fits (straight, wide leg and barrel) are available in four shades (mid indigo, light indigo, black and washed black), and made, says the brand, using 80 per cent organic cotton and 20 per cent recycled.

SISTER

Fans of Erin and Sara Foster are familiar with the sisters’ self-deprecating sense of humour and not-always-friendly competition between themselves (as seen in their TV series Barely Famous) – which translates perfectly to the name of their brand, Favorite Daughter. New to David Jones, look for their range of tailored pieces for every day – pants, vests and blazers, which are imbued with a sense of cool-girl nonchalance.

OH MY, MULBERRY

Following on from the resurgence of the ’90s in fashion, there’s now a strong case for reviving everything we loved about the noughties. Take Mulberry’s ‘Soft Bayswater’ bag, a new twist on a bag that originated in 2003, now updated with a more minimalist silhouette. Even better, the brand has launched at David Jones and is available exclusively* at the Elizabeth Street store.

WARDROBE HEROES

Known for its ‘less is more’ aesthetic and quality craftsmanship, Byron Bay brand St. Agni is bringing its new line of handbags to David Jones. Look out for short-handled croissant bags, woven leather totes and simple rectangular shoulder styles, in an autumnal palette

BASSIKE

When it comes to functional, wearable staples, no one does it like Bassike, and this season the brand has a fresh collection of wardrobe must-haves – think heavyweight denim, butter-soft leather pieces and an edgy camo print. “It’s the perfect balance of tough-girl strength, effortless cool and a hint of seductive confidence,” says creative director Deborah Sams.

HAPPY 25 YEARS

Shona Joy marks its 25th anniversary this year, with the brand garnering a cult following at the Paddington and Bondi Beach markets in 2000 before releasing its first collection at David Jones. The new-season range pays homage to its beachy origins with well-crafted, effortless styles inspired by Bondi’s pastel-hued skies and nostalgic architecture.

From online shopping and app–based browsing to elevated instore experiences, we explore why the retail environment today is so different from yesterday.

One morning, while scrolling Instagram and waiting for an oat flat white at my local cafe, an ad pops up. The photo is of a woman standing in the middle of a dark Parisian street. Her long white dress is lit up by the camera’s flash, making the outline of her bare legs visible beneath the sheer fabric. She’s wearing low kitten heels and enormous diamond earrings. It’s not clear if my interest has piqued because it’s a beautiful dress, or because it’s an image of a night out, dressed up, between cocktail bars in the French capital.

Either way, the app has made the purchase straightforward. I can click through and buy the dress from the designer’s website and have it shipped to my front door. The transaction will be complete in a matter of minutes, the parcel in my hands within a week (or much less, if same-day delivery is an option). But I’m not one for impulse purchases. I close Instagram and make a mental note to find the dress instore so I can try it on and assess the fit and quality. But of course, in 2025, the mental note isn’t necessary. For the next few days advertisements for the dress appear on every website I visit. There are emails from the brand in my inbox, telling me I forgot something. Eventually, I cave and look for the dress online to see if it’s available in any brick-and-mortar stores near me, and also to suss out the best price. I also know there’s a chance it might pop up on a resale or rental site, which would appease the part of me that cares about fashion’s impacts on the environment.

For better or worse, we are living in an omnichannel retail world, in a market described as “chaotic” by The Business of Fashion, in its latest State of Fashion report. But Imran Amed, the platform’s founder, writes, “There is still opportunity to be found for brands that move nimbly and are quick to adapt.” In the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, a climate crisis and the continued reshuffling of global politics and trade, there is not one singular condition changing the way we shop now – there are several, and they seem to be moving all the time.

According to data released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Australia’s discretionary spending has dropped by about eight per cent in the past two years, the largest drop across OECD countries. “Spending has slowed down across the board, across all categories,” says Laura Demasi, the head of retail, social and consumer trends at Roy Morgan. “Clothing and household goods are at the pointy end of discretionary spending, and they’ve really trended down the most.”

Bridget Veals, executive general manager of womenswear, footwear and accessories at David Jones, is a keen observer of the shopping habits of Australians, but there’s one observation, she says, which has remained a constant. “When brands have brought out great products that feel new, we’re not seeing a big shift in consumer behaviour,” she says. “They still buy into brands they really trust and who are delivering on quality, price and design.” Revealing the truth of a tried-and-tested retail maxim: a winner is a winner.

This sentiment is echoed by Margie Woods, founder and creative director of Viktoria & Woods – a brand built on highquality, classic wardrobe staples, available at David Jones. “It’s not that [Australians] aren’t shopping, we are just being more considerate when it comes to evaluating whether the piece is something that is going to prove versatile and functional in our wardrobes,” she says. While, for some shoppers, a budget crunch means they might turn to investment pieces, another cost-cutting behaviour is something called ‘trading down’. “When people still need to buy clothes, they shift down to cheaper brands,” she says. “Instead of buying the $300 designer dress, people trade down to something that’s a bit cheaper and maybe go to Witchery or Country Road.” At David Jones, customers are trading down, too, but it is less extreme. “Designer level sales have softened but the ›

COVER

more advanced contemporary level has been good for us,” says Veals. “When the customer wants something new, she is buying it at a lower price.”

According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in August 2024, online sales are up about 6.5 per cent year-on-year. “What that tells us is people gravitate to online when they are trying to save money,” says Demasi. “You can do price comparisons online and it reduces the impulse buying.”

The rise of e-commerce is nothing new. In 2023, Australia Post estimated the online share of retail spend to be 16.8 per cent and that eight out of 10 households shopped online. But as our shopping habits become increasingly digital, along with the rest of our lives, designers and retailers have to find ways to elevate the customer experience across every format the purchase takes.

The idea of omnichannel retail is to streamline the transition from social media to online research, to an instore interaction and trying on the product, and then to purchase and delivery. At David Jones, this has manifested with the launch of the David Jones App, which can be used to shop online or to book instore experiences such as one-on-one styling services (including choosing your preferred stylist) or lingerie fittings. “We’re having huge wins getting online and instore to work seamlessly together,” says Veals. Essential to creating memorable shopping experiences is empowering sales assistants, Veals adds – whether offering styling advice, make-up tutorials or expert fittings. Retail staff have an integral and valuable role to play in creating moments of connection. “We’ve got 150 trained bra fitters,” says Veals. “Our very caring and engaged team takes really good care of our customers.”

“AUSTRALIAN

CUSTOMERS

ARE BEING MORE SCRUPULOUS WITH THEIR SPENDING. WE ALL ARE.”

For Deborah Sams, co-founder and creative director of Bassike, an enormous amount of thought goes into creating an inviting store environment, “from our lighting to fixtures and furnishings”. All with the aim to create “a special place to walk into,” she says. Translating memorable instore experiences to online has seen Bassike, also stocked at David Jones, invest in the ongoing development of its e-commerce platform. “User experience is continuously updated, with our team making changes to things such as checkout options, payment options – this all adds to the omnichannel concept we value,” she says.

The Business of Fashion says improving the online experience by using AI-powered curation, content and search tools is key to cutting through the crowded marketplace, narrowing down choices to eliminate “customer overwhelm” and convert to sales.

– Margie Woods, founder of Viktoria & Woods

As momentum towards online grows, traditional retailers are investing more time and money into elevating instore experiences to drive foot traffic and foster a different kind of in-person engagement. At Viktoria & Woods, instore interactions are crucial to building brand loyalty. “The person a customer interacts with instore is the first and most important brand experience,” says Woods. Her brand is working to impart that same feeling through social media, and has started creating content featuring retail teams. “Our staff style stories are among those with the highest engagement,” she says. “It helps solidify our fashion authority in a really non-intimidating way.”

Another force that has transformed the way we shop is climate change. In Australia, more than 200,000 tonnes of textiles are sent to landfill every year. Demand for circular, sustainable options, like rental and resale, reflects growing consumer concern about such impacts. A report from WGSN projected the global second-hand market is set to reach $US350 billion by 2028. In response, David Jones is enhancing its offerings through instore and online partnerships with rental service The Volte and reseller Blue Spinach. It is also a founding member of Seamless, an Australian body aimed at encouraging industry to help significantly reduce the volume of clothing going into landfill. “Circularity is really important for the planet,” Veals says. “We’d like to take it further in our future, too.”

At Viktoria & Woods, customer sentiment and a shift to a more sustainable future go hand-in-hand for the brand, which provides transparency as it charts its sustainability practices and progress. “Seeing customers become more engaged and concerned about sustainability is really exciting,” says Woods.

THE ’90S INSPIRED BY…..

It’s been happening for a while now: the slip dresses and the cutaway tanks; the boxier tailoring and the plaid and striped overshirts. The decade that gave us Gwyneth style, N’SYNC, Kate Moss and SATC is in the midst of a full-blown renaissance. If you did it the first time, you already know the drill: channel the preppiness of Clueless or the grunge-styling of Reality Bites; embrace Meg Ryan’s oversized tailored separates or the slinky silhouettes of Carrie Bradshaw to re-create the look today. The secret to success is to adopt one ’90s trend at a time –not all at once.

COOL AND COMFY

I’ll be postpartum, so comfort is key, but I don’t want to sacrifice style. Bassike does the best comfy tees and pants that also look great if you need to duck to the shops or run errands. A trench from Camilla and Marc never goes out of style – the brand has the best designs with beautiful quality. And I’d love a nice pair of jeans from Agolde, especially a relaxed-fit style.

FOR A NIGHT OUT

I love a structured blazer dress with black sheer stockings and heels, or tailored pants with a beautiful top by Christopher Esber –something I can feel good in and that will be flattering.

Maison Balzac candles add such a beautiful vibe, and anything from Dinosaur Designs is stunning and looks like artwork. I’d love to get into baking more – I’m obsessed with pavlova, so I’d love to get a stand mixer. And with a toddler at home, I find our floors are in constant need of mopping – a job I despise. My three wardrobe must-haves are a long trench coat, a puffer jacket with a sleek, tailored silhouette (and preferably in a metallic hue!) and a long, flowing duster coat to wear over jeans during the day or a gown at night.

EVENT READY

An oversized tuxedo jacket, skinny black pants and a crisp white shirt is a timeless look. And you can’t go past Manolo Blahnik embellished satin pumps in the boldest colour available.

BACK TO BASICS

A black leather jacket is always edgy, while a white shirt is a must for every season. Skims helps ensure you get the right lines and curves for whatever you’re wearing.

A chunky knit in cream or beige will work with your existing wardrobe – wear it over jeans, a ballerina skirt or even a mini. When it comes to shoes, the ballet flat is back, with full marks for comfort!

When the season starts to turn, it’s time to turn to tailoring. Why?

FOREVER FAVOURITES

TRICKED̵UP TECH AND CUTTING̵EDGE INNOVATORS ARE NICE, BUT SOME OF THE GREATEST BEAUTY BUYS HAVE MORE OF AN ENDURING APPEAL. THESE ARE THE CLASSICS THAT HAVE BEEN TRIED, TESTED AND ETERNALLY LOVED.

ANASTASIA

BEVERLY HILLS

Beauty Balm Serum Boosted Skin Tint in Shade 12, $77.

Beauty trends are famously fleeting – the razor-thin brows of the ’90s or the chiselled and contoured faces of the early 2000s didn’t stick around for long. But among the frenzy of the fresh, there are a select few beauty products that transcend trends and become bona fide beauty icons. These classic staples have earned their place on vanities – and faces –worldwide not by chasing what’s new, but by delivering consistent, transformative results that sometimes span generations. “True classics earn their status through reputation, reviews and results,” says Anastasia Soare, founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills – a brand that’s crafted its fair share of product icons to love both now and forever. Follow our guide to the enduring classics worth rediscovering, with top tips on where to splurge and save.

SKINCARE STAPLES

When it comes to impressive track records, it’s hard to beat Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, which has been reviving skin for more than 40 years. Long before hyaluronic acid became a trending phrase, ‘ANR’ (as it is affectionately known to its fans) was slathering skin with this incredible hydrating superpower. Clarins’ much-loved Double Serum has a history just as long. Today, one is sold every four seconds thanks to its radiant impact on skin. “In skincare, serums are the real workhorses – their potent, active-packed formulas make them an essential step for resultsdriven routines,” says skin therapist Diandra Politano. Meanwhile, Weleda’s iconic Skin Food is a rich do-it-all moisturiser that has been providing serious TLC for complexions (and used as a secret weapon by countless pro make-up artists) for nearly a century. For a more modern classic that will become an MVP in any routine, try Lano Golden Dry Skin Salve. Packed with traditional ingredients like lanolin, manuka honey and vitamin E, it’s a reparative powerhouse that can sort out a multitude of skin problems, especially dry lips. The beauty of building a skincare routine around the classics is that you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot. “Splurge on products with ingredients that are typically hard to formulate, like vitamin C and retinol,” says David Jones beauty buyer Samantha McLaren. “Formulating skincare is a mix of art and science, and getting these ingredients to work, not irritate, feel nice and last a long time is hard! Then, save on products that are less active and more sensorial, like body cream or face oil.”

FOREVER FRAGRANCES

Few fragrances are as instantly recognisable (and universally loved) as Chanel N5, which has been making women feel more beautiful for more than 100 years. The sophisticated composition and commitment to premium ingredients has won it favour generation after generation. Similarly, Dior’s Miss Dior has been the embodiment of timeless femininity since it first arrived on shelves in 1947. The glorious blend of rose and jasmine feels just as vibrant and lively today as it did then.

For a signature scent that feels fresh and fruity, the bestselling Jo Malone London English Pear & Freesia Cologne is the perfect choice. The British fragrance house uses an unconventional ingredient, natural pear extract, to craft a unique floral scent that has garnered a huge fanbase. The signature Chloé Eau de Parfum is another modern favourite with a cult following. Built around the enduring appeal of the rose, it’s the epitome of effortless elegance.

SMART SHOPPING

Investing in beauty classics is even smarter when they come with a sustainable twist. “I look for products that are refillable,” says McLaren. “That way, there’s a saving plus less packaging, which is a win!” Try these chic refills that combine luxury with longevity.

MAKE UP MARVELS

For Soare, there’s one element of a make-up routine which, regardless of trends, should endure forever: “Eyebrows have the ability to change your entire face,” she says. “They’re the utmost make-it-or-break-it step for ensuring features look in balance.”

Among Soare’s range of groundbreaking products is the Brow Wiz, which became an instant hit for its precision and natural results, with a pencil so finely crafted, it mimics real hair.

Complexion is another cornerstone of beauty, and Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation continues to be a certifiable superstar. “It’s not exactly dewy and it’s not exactly matte, so it makes for a really versatile base,” says make-up artist Jaque Di Condio.

For a classic icon that has recently become even better, don’t sleep on Dior Addict Lip Glow. It’s a balm that reacts with the pH levels of your body to bring out your lips’ most flattering shade. A recent renovation sees an expanded number of shades. If you haven’t tried it before, shade 001 Pink is the flattering-on-everyone star. If you’re more adventurous, try Icy Blue

How to take investment dressing to a new level while always staying true to your style.

Mention the term ‘investment dressing’ and it usually conjures up thoughts of camel coats, cashmere knits and a classic black suit. But let’s be honest, these pieces – while timeless – might not necessarily ignite your flame. Investment dressing can look different for everybody, depending on how you live your life and what you do for a living. The one unifying factor: it should always make you feel fabulous wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. Follow these expert steps to get it right.

KNOW YOUR PERSONAL STYLE CODE

The first step is to know what makes your style tick. “You should figure out your style DNA,” says stylist and creative director Petta Chua. “And you should invest in that style DNA, whatever it is – a colour, a cut, an item of clothing, a feeling that you need to have. Invest in that.”

When moving from Sydney to Austin, Texas, with her family, Chua had to make some tough wardrobe decisions. “I sat down and I went, ‘What are the things that I really love?’ And it was earrings and brooches. These are the things I never get rid of. I wear brooches in every possible way you can wear a brooch. So look at what makes you feel really good and go, ‘Okay, these are my core pieces that make me feel like me.’”

With this knowledge in tow, she feels that there is less regret when she purchases these items, and it’s also worth spending a bit more on them.

For Jac Hunt, co-founder of Jac + Jack with business partner Lisa Dempsey, it’s white shirts, fine-gauge knits and long skirts. “I have that many iterations, but I know they work for me,” she says. “I have different colours, different fabrics, different textures.”

CHOOSE ITEMS THAT PLAY NICE WITH EACH OTHER

“Modern investment dressing is all about a seamless integration into your current wardrobe,” says Hunt. Understanding her own style DNA, Hunt says her wardrobe is “almost like a jigsaw puzzle – everything kind of works in and around the core pillars of what I know really suits me”.

“ INVEST IN YOUR STYLE DNA, WHATEVER THAT IS – A COLOUR, A CUT, AN ITEM OF CLOTHING, A FEELING THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE. INVEST IN THAT.”
– Petta Chua, stylist and creative director

If you’re a denim person, for example, embracing new jeans silhouettes can be an effective way of updating your wardrobe while remaining true to your style. This is certainly the case for Dempsey, whose wardrobe is underpinned by wide-leg trousers or jeans. “There are just so many great new shapes in jeans,” she says. “I wanted the horseshoe-shaped ones – high waist with a wider leg. And it has overhauled my denim wardrobe.”

Chua adds that when you’re shopping, it’s worth taking a few of your favourite items with you to make sure that any new pieces will work with them.

TRUST YOUR GUT

When you understand the way your style comes together, it makes decisions easier, including alerting you to the wrong decision – and this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Chua admits to getting swept up in the moment when designer Raf Simons left Dior as creative director, thinking she should buy something from his final collection, for fashion posterity. “But the clothes were just not right for me,” she says. “I wore them and I’d be like, ‘Oh, maybe if I take it in and do this...’ If you are negotiating with yourself in a change room, don’t buy it. My worst investments are when I look at myself in a mirror and I go, ‘Ah, maybe.’ If it doesn’t come to you pretty quickly, it’s usually not the way to go.” ›

FASHION

DO THE MATHS

We’ve all justified purchases in any number of ways: new job, break-up pick-me-up, exotic holiday. But when considering the cost-per-wear logic, there is some merit in it.

“I’m the queen of ‘mathing’ my way out of any situation,” says Danielle Santin, David Jones’ buyer of women’s denim, active, swim and import brands. When assessing the price of a new purchase, she has a general rule: “You’ve got to be able to dress the piece up and down,” she says. “If you can wear it with a heel or a flat, that immediately halves the cost per wear. And if you can style it up with three different items – jeans or shorts or a skirt – again, you can divide that by three.”

And the overriding factor? If you don’t have to buy other things to wear with it. “It has to be a piece that you’ll wear over and over again and that you can wear back with your wardrobe,” says Santin. She adds that for an investment piece, you should look beyond the current season and envisage yourself wearing it for a number of years to come.

Rather than only wearing it once, eveningwear should also be something you can see yourself wearing for the longer term. “If you have a few beautiful evening dresses that you always put on and that make you feel sexy and confident, and it’s a silhouette that flatters you, that’s worth investing in,” says Santin.

“IT HAS TO BE A PIECE YOU’LL WEAR OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND THAT YOU CAN WEAR BACK WITH YOUR WARDROBE.”
– Danielle Santin, David Jones buyer

SHOP LIKE A PRO

“Try to shop like a stylist,” says Chua. “Have a moodboard. Fill in the blanks of what you’re looking for. If it’s a great coat, where are you wearing that? ‘I’m wearing it out for dinner. I’m wearing it to work. I’m wearing it with the girls.’ And then go, ‘Okay, what pieces in my wardrobe would I wear that with?’”

That moodboard could also feature images and names of people whose style you admire. For Chua, that includes Paris-based Australian costume designer and stylist Catherine Baba and her whimsical ’70s style, Oscar-winning film creative Catherine Martin, designer Susie Cave and First Nations writer/actor/ director Nakkiah Lui (“She makes everything just look so amazing,” says Chua).

For Hunt, it’s US designer Jenna Lyons’ masculine-feminine approach and her style signatures: “The glasses, the red lip, always denim with a blazer, with the shirt super unbuttoned.” Or the nonchalant style of actor Charlotte Rampling, and the uniform approach of designer Miuccia Prada.

CONSIDER THE LIFE YOU LEAD

“One of the things you have to be realistic about is where you go in life,” says Chua. “Invest in things that make you feel really comfortable and really good. And if that is white shirts, blazers – like all of the classics – do it. But if it’s pyjamas or A-line skirts, that’s fine, too.”

Hunt agrees. “I think that with a bit of age, you do get to that point where you know what suits you, and the life that you have.”

Ultimately, says Santin, if you invest in the right pieces, it will pay you back in spades in confidence alone. “If I feel really confident in my outfit, it changes my day,” she says. “I’m more efficient, I work harder, I’m more excited and I just stand a little bit taller.”

And everybody needs more of that in their daily lives.

Coming of

The Aussie brand expands its repertoire with a new line that stays true to the essence of AJE.

Edwina Forest and Adrian Norris need little introduction. The duo behind Aje are as woven into the fabric of the Australian fashion industry as the brand’s now-signature statement dresses and low-key luxe athleisure pieces. Now the designers, who launched their brand back in 2008, are expanding their offerings with Aje Studio, a collection focused on essential items that are a little more pared back. “We wanted to go back to our roots,” says Norris, referring to the early shapes, designs and fabrics that were created in the Aje atelier. “We saw so much success with [launching] Athletica [in 2021] and we know that our customer wants to wear Aje in all parts of her life. Our skills and our aesthetic work across so many different pieces and we saw the opportunity to expand that even further.”

The creative duo acknowledges that some of the hallmarks of their main line –the bold colours, vibrant prints, artful ruffles and sculptural silhouettes – might feel a bit ‘too much’ for customers to wear in everyday life. Aje Studio, then, injects a fresh perspective, with a coastal feel that nods to the brand’s beginnings in Noosa. It makes space for more easygoing pieces to come to life: the colour palette is largely neutral. It also sits at a more accessible price point.

With collections that cross a range of different styles and budgets, it’s clearly an Aje world, and we’re all just living in it. “We know there are people out there buying all three of our brands,” says Norris, who also aims for the ranges to be available wherever Aje’s customers are shopping. “We’ve always believed in bricks and mortar, but we understand the meaning of omnichannel – to meet customers in different places and be successful in all of them.”

The Aje team works hard to translate its message across all touchpoints, including its concessions within David Jones. “To touch and feel things is innately human,” says Forest. “We’re tactile by nature and that’s important when it comes to fabrications and innovation in that sphere.”

An artisanal, detail-oriented approach links the collections delivered each season by Aje, Aje Studio and Aje Athletica, be it a smartly placed debossed logo on a pair of leggings, embroidered florals

lining the bodice of a gown or pearl embellishments on the straps of a classic black slip dress. Subtle nods mark each item as distinctly Aje.

This sense of what fits the brand comes naturally to Norris and Forest, having worked closely together for almost two decades. “You have to have respect for each other and respect for your skills,” says Norris. “I think we’re really lucky that we still like each other and we know what we want the brand to look like and what we want the business to be.” Both Norris and Forest agree that each of their skill sets have grown and changed over the years. “You learn things and you also have to unlearn some things,” says Forest. “You have to be really willing to listen and relinquish some control to be successful.”

One key learning that has contributed to the success of Aje is how to communicate effectively. “That’s where trust comes from,” says Forest. She’s also quick to admit it’s not their hands alone that bring the brand to life. “We have a wonderful team of humans, but it’s definitely our vision –and when our vision is aligned, that’s when the best work happens.”

Words: Alice Jeffery.
Aje founders Adrian Norris and Edwina Forest.

Aje

In a world that’s increasingly driven by micro and macro trends and a 24-hour news cycle that demands attention, Norris and Forest have managed to have the confidence to do things their own way.

“Being authentically Aje is what we’re doing, and it comes easily,” says Norris. “It’s so much easier to be yourself than to try to be someone else.”

Another lesson? Letting go of the idea of perfection. Forest recalls a conversation about the creative process that she had with a celebrated Australian artist many years ago. “He told me he used to try to get things to 95 or 100 per cent, but to perfect things when perfection keeps moving is near impossible,” she says.

“He learnt to release things at 80 per cent, and I remember thinking, ‘How can you do that?’ But I get it now.”

Possibly the biggest lesson they’ve learnt throughout the years is to not be scared to make mistakes. “You can call them mistakes or you can call them lessons,” says Forest. “Had we not gone in certain directions, we wouldn’t have learnt what we learnt and moved forward to be exactly where we are.”

MINUTES WITH CHLOE DE WINTER

As her brand makes its David Jones debut, the co̵founder of sassy smalls label Nala talks comfort and inclusivity.

You co-founded Nala in 2022 on top of running your online Pilates studio, Go Chlo, and while going through a fertility journey. Clearly, you have much to be proud of. What makes you most proud about the brand you’ve built?

The fact that we’ve brought a lot of joy back into the experience of shopping for bras. I read a stat recently that said 45 per cent of women avoid bra shopping until it’s absolutely necessary because they feel like it’s a chore. I really think we’ve been able to transform that: we have thousands of people in our community who love our products, who have loved the experience of shopping for our products and who now feel good about themselves wearing our products.

Nala calls itself an inclusive brand. How do you cater to all genders and sizes?

We offer sizes XXS to 6XL in our briefs, and A to J cups in the tops and bras. It’s something we’re very proud of, and we’re expanding further because the demand for bigger cup sizes has been huge. We also do gender-neutral styles, and 90 per cent of our size range will be offered at David Jones.

As a physiotherapist and Pilates instructor, comfort must be important to you. Which pieces do you recommend wearing for work versus working out?

I am 100 per cent a comfy undie kind of gal. At the moment, I’m going through a Support Wirefree Bralette phase; it’s my go-to for every day and is perfect for me because I have breastfeeding boobs that don’t quite sit the way they used to! At night, I opt for the Bio Underwire Bra – I find it so incredibly comfortable, and I never used to find underwire comfortable. For workouts, the Classic Gee is the perfect G-string – I can’t get enough of it.

Which collections are you most excited to bring to David Jones? We’re excited to be launching into DJs with the Bio Butter range, which is made from a bio-based fabric [85 per cent bio-based nylon, made using regenerative sources such as corn]. It includes some of our bestsellers: the Support Wirefree Bralette, Strapless Underwire Bra and Bio Underwire Bra, as well as the Bio High Waist Brief and the G-strings, which everyone goes mad over. Then there’s the Flossy Mesh range, which adds a little bit of sexiness to your underwear drawer; it’s made from a recycled nylon fabric. In terms of colours, you’ll find the Nala faves: licorice, desert dust as well as some pops of colour. We couldn’t be more excited about this partnership. We know some of our customers want to touch and feel the products – to see the magic of Nala on their bodies before they buy – and this is their chance.

Any other favourite pieces?

The Mesh Comfort Wirefree Bralette has been a dark horse. It looks like a crop top on the hanger, but when you put it on, it gives the most amazing lift and shape to your boobs. You’ll never want to take it off.

MY PICKS FOR AUTUMN

NATHAN MCGUIRE

COOL–WEATHER ESSENTIALS

A Stone Island jacket or hoodie and Maison Kitsuné work pants and shoes are perfect for autumn. They’re great staples and will easily work in every wardrobe. And the sneaker of the season? Axel Arigato sneakers for sure –they’re stylish and cool.

WELL SUITED

For an event, I’ll wear a Calibre suit. The brand has styles for every occasion and the suiting is very comfortable. An Armani trouser is also an elevated pant that’s a great fit for your wardrobe.

MOST–WANTED ACCESSORIES

You can’t go wrong with a Tissot watch for all occasions – they’re expertly crafted and classic. Plus, an Ami cap – you always need a good cap. And my pick for a carry-all? An Ami shopping bag, which has a great shape.

FEEL GOOD SKINCARE

An Aesop body scrub is on my list for this season. It feels so good on my skin and smells amazing.

TIMELESS APPEAL

Whether it’s a jacket or jeans, denim is always good value – it’s timeless so it can last across all seasons and ages. I love Neuw and G-Star. Other great buys include a Patagonia sweater or jacket for a casual but stylish fit that has a retro vibe, and Rodd & Gunn Chelsea boots.

SUPER SAVVY TIP

Investment pieces don’t have to be boring. Consider buying something unexpected or try a new colour that grabs your attention. A Polo Ralph Lauren polo shirt is always a colourful and stylish option.

POLO RALPH LAUREN polo, $159
STONE ISLAND hoodie, $595
TISSOT watch, $1350
MAISON KÏTSUNÉ pants, $480
RODD & GUNN boots, $199
CALIBRE blazer, $499
PATAGONIA jumper, $189.95

New to David Jones’ menswear department is Rolla’s, an Australian denim and fashion brand that celebrates the classics – with a modern twist. Whether it’s a new pair of perfectly cut jeans you’re after or perhaps a go-with-everything shirt, Rolla’s is a must for laid-back styles you can wear with confidence.

NEW, NOW, NEXT ON A ROLLA’S

DOUBLE TAKE

Shawn Stüssy, one of surf and streetwear’s most iconic brand founders, has come out of retirement to relaunch S/DOUBLE, with the help of the three Hill brothers behind the equally beloved brand Globe. Expect to see plaid shirts, logo tees and surf/ skate styles galore when S/DOUBLE hits David Jones this autumn.

FRESH DENIM

The Hugo Boss universe continues to expand with the introduction of HUGO Blue. Designed to be more casual, the brand offers fashion-forward denim, fresh silhouettes and bold colours. Also new is Boss One – a curation of top picks from David Beckham, who is the brand’s global ambassador. Both ranges are available, exclusively at David Jones*.

RACING WITH REISS

A collaboration between two iconic British brands (Reiss and McLaren), Reiss X McLaren Formula 1 Team is as statement-making and impactful as you’d expect. But it’s not just about sporty jersey and racing pieces; in addition to printed shirts and coordinating shorts or trousers, the collection includes a smart wool-blend overshirt in McLaren’s signature papaya orange hue, intarsia cardigans and zip-through fleece jackets with a vibrant, very on-trend all-over logo print.

CIAO, MILANO

For more than 85 years, Boggi Milano has been getting men the world over fitted out in dapper styles made from the most premium fabrics available. Whether you’re hunting down a new three-piece suit for winter events, a luxe knitted sweater for smart-casual dress codes or simply upgrading your overcoat, Boggi Milano’s tailoring is second to none.

IN FINE FORM

Since debuting in 2019, SKIMS – the shapewear and loungewear line by Kim Kardashian and Jens Grede – has become one of the biggest names in underwear (and not just because of its famous founder). And now, it’s launched SKIMS Mens, offering boxer briefs, zip-up hoodies, ribbed tanks and jersey-style T-shirts made with the same comfort, quality and inclusive approach – think 11 colours and sizes XS to 5X – as its women’s range. Available only at David Jones, the line is also the official underwear partner of the NBA. If it’s good enough for Steph Curry…

STYLE MEETS SUBSTANCE

Larriet, a Melbourne brand that takes its name from lariat, a rope used to tether things together, was founded on this very principle: of intentionally bringing elements together. In its case, this means combining simplicity with functionality to create pieces that are designed to be worn and loved on the regular – think versatile shirts, nostalgic ringer tees and carpenter pants, all designed to be unisex so you can share them (or not) with your partner, sister or bestie.

GREAT GIBSON

Based in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, Gibson is a trend-forward brand that embraces a fresh approach to tailoring. Inspired by the Japanese penchant for discipline and precision and featuring stretch fabrics and distinctive prints, each slim-fit blazer, sharply cut pair of trousers and high-quality waistcoat merges traditional suiting with innovation and individuality.

PLUGGED IN

An electric vehicle̵fuelled future is already here.

Electric vehicles have been growing in popularity at a rapid rate over the past few years. More and more Australians are realising the dual benefits of these future-facing vehicles: not only do they reduce your carbon footprint (EVs produce no exhaust emissions because they don’t even have an exhaust pipe; a battery and an electric motor combine to do the work) but they also remove the constantly climbing cost of fossil fuels from your life.

In 2023, the number of new EVs bought in Australia more than doubled from the previous year, continuing a trend that had been taking place each year since 2020. And while it might have seemed like Tesla was the only brand in town when it came to EVs, the rise in demand has led to a huge increase in the number of options now available.

It’s important to remember that the average Australian drives less than 40km a day, which means you’ll only need to charge it occasionally, at home – and if you have a home solar system, you can do it for free when the sun is shining.

Porsche already offers the stunning, sporty Taycan EV, but it also just launched fully electric versions of its hugely popular Macan mid-sized SUV. Similarly, Mercedes-Benz is constantly expanding its electric offering, recently unveiling stylish EV versions of the Smart car,

which are not as tiny as the original (you could fit two of those in one car space), but are still very much Goldilocks-sized when it comes to city living. And MG has the sexy sports EV category nailed with the all-electric Cyberster. Initially, EVs were intimidatingly expensive, with most of them sitting above $60K. But a flood of cheaper brands and models have recently hit the market, including the enticing MG4, which hovers around the $30K mark.

In the past, the main concern for people considering an EV was ‘range anxiety’, but most modern iterations offer at least 400km between charges, and several offer more than 600km (including the Polestar 2, with 659km). In 2023, Australia also saw a 75 per cent increase in the number of public EV charging locations. Even petrol companies like Ampol and BP are now providing chargers at some of their service stations.

Then there’s V2G, or Vehicle to Grid, a new technology that is set to change the game entirely by using power from your EV battery to power your home. Because the batteries in EVs are so huge, they can hold enough power to run your house for three to seven days, according to the Electric Vehicle Council. This means, when V2G is up and running (it requires a bidirectional charger and an EV with all the necessary tech installed), it will be possible to fill up your vehicle with solar power during the day, then pull that power back out to meet your household needs at night. Which is great for your bank account and the planet.

An electric vehicle future certainly sounds exciting – but the most exciting part is that it’s already here.

The Cyberster brings a modern twist to the classic MG roadster.
The MG4 delivers a range of up to 530km on a single charge.

VAN GOGH

AT THE LUME

SThe record breaking experience returns to Melbourne.

croll through Instagram or TikTok and it’s likely you’ll see clips and photos of friends gazing up at, and immersed in, larger-than-life masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. That’s because each iconic artist has been showcased at THE LUME Melbourne, the largest digital art gallery in the world. In fact, when it made its debut in 2021, the VAN GOGH experience set records as one of the most-visited ticketed cultural experiences in Australia and New Zealand – which is why THE LUME is bringing it to life once more. “VAN GOGH at THE LUME Melbourne isn’t just an experience, it’s a phenomenon,” says Josh Ogilvie, the gallery’s general manager. “Bringing it back has been a response to incredible public demand. It holds a special place in the hearts of many.” ›

On now until 1 June, VAN GOGH is a cultural highlight, with a main gallery experience that allows visitors to explore the work and vivid world of the artist on an extreme scale. Each celebrated masterpiece is displayed in an immense 3000-square-metre space that reaches four storeys high, bringing new meaning to the term ‘immersive’. “THE LUME is an extraordinary gateway to art that welcomes everyone, from seasoned art lovers to families and experience seekers,” says Ogilvie. “It’s a place where art is no longer confined to a frame but spills into every corner of your senses.”

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

Café Terrace 1888: Inspired by Van Gogh’s “The Café Terrace at Night”, this eatery within the gallery offers a European-style menu that’s perfect as you take in the VAN GOGH experience.

Yoga in Art: Combining mindfulness and art, join in one of the yoga sessions held among the vibrant projections of natureinspired themes for a meditative yet energising experience.

Explore Melbourne: “Melbourne is an incredible destination in its own right, and there’s plenty to explore,” says Ogilvie. “Pair your visit to THE LUME with a day discovering the city’s famous laneway street art, rooftop bars or world-class dining scene – or visit the National Gallery of Victoria for even more cultural enrichment.”

Even if you witnessed the works the first time around, the latest exhibition features exciting new additions including Finding Vincent VR, a world-first virtual reality experience that delves even deeper into the life and soul of one of history’s most influential artists. Imagine standing under the swirling blues of “The Starry Night” or strolling through vivid landscapes re-creating “Wheat Field with Cypresses”, all while hearing the story of Van Gogh and his brother Theo. Unlike traditional virtual reality experiences, which participants do on their own, Finding Vincent VR allows groups

to explore the artist’s world together through a poignant, emotional experience that blurs the line between technology and art. “Combined with the immersive projections, music and dining in the main gallery, Finding Vincent VR is an unforgettable way to uncover the man behind the art – his passions, struggles and the enduring impact of his work – and experience Van Gogh like never before,” says Ogilvie.

Not only does the VAN GOGH experience offer a unique journey into the world of the inimitable artist, as the only gallery of its kind in Australia, a visit to THE LUME is an event in itself, with something for the whole family. “The beauty of THE LUME is that it bridges generations and backgrounds,” says Ogilvie. “For children, it’s an incredible introduction to the magic of art and culture, igniting curiosity and wonder in an environment where they are free to be kids. While for adults, it’s a chance to see familiar masterpieces in a whole new light. It’s a shared experience that’s as memorable as it is inspiring.”

Live like

Welcome to the perfect Italian holiday, where you see the sights but also discover hidden gems along the way. It’s made possible with small̵group travel – the biggest trend in touring right now.

inItaly

The real joys of exploring a new city come when you find that quiet laneway few people know about or you stumble across a restaurant filled with locals. And the only way to almost guarantee those experiences is with small-group travel. Think intimate conversations; leisurely 9am starts; premium coaches designed specifically for fewer people, and purposefully for more legroom and more view; and meaningful experiences that take you off the beaten track and into the homes, and at the tables of, the locals.

Insight Vacations offers classic and small group sizes, and both have expert local guides that actually live in the towns and cities you’re visiting. The small group tours are perfect for solo travellers, women, couples and anyone wanting to create bespoke holiday experiences. The tours can take you right across the world, but here we deep dive into the once-in-a-lifetime memories you can create in Italy – home to wonderful dining, breathtaking scenery, centuries of history and, of course, effortless style. ›

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

As chef Anthony Bourdain once said: “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.” He was right – it’s only when you get away from the crowds and meet the locals that you truly get a sense of the place. Insight Vacations invites you to the kitchen tables of locals, including Italian nonnas across the country. Dine at the home of locals in Alberobello, Puglia – a region famous for its orecchiette – or go to the source and see tomatoes being grown near Naples. This area is the only place in the world where the rare Piennolo tomatoes are grown, thanks to the volcanic soils. Stop for a leisurely lunch with the farmers overlooking Mount Vesuvius.

Tours to explore: Grand Italy and Sicily; Best of Italy

EXPLORE THE REGION’S BEST

One of the easiest ways to not feel like a tourist is to eschew large travel groups and move through a country with the people who call it home. Learn from them, explore with them and discover hidden treasures you would never have found by yourself. In Sicily, for example, Insight Vacations travel director Mark, who has lived on the island for more than a decade, can tell you his favourite food, depending on the seasons. “If you were to come in summer, there’s a small window of opportunity – some three weeks – to taste the delicious prickly pear gelato, which is really fine,” he says.

Travel director Filippo is an expert of Florence and can tell you the lesser known – but equally breathtaking – museums and galleries to visit. “The Museo Nazionale del Bargello is mostly focused on sculptures and displays the ‘David’ of Donatello –very different from the ones created by Michelangelo,” he says.

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE

There are few things more meaningful (and sensible) than being a responsible tourist, and seeking out local experiences that make a difference helps you be just that. In Perugia, visit Marta, who offers employment opportunities for local women by running a female-only workshop, preserving the ancient craft of loom-weaving. In Venice, meet artisan craftspeople continuing the tradition of glassblowing – its history dates back to the 15th century and each visit helps support the survival of the workshop and the craft. In Tuscany, wander around an olive oil farm, sample the product and enjoy an authentic lunch made with locally sourced ingredients. Each area of Italy is famous for a different style of food – and you’ll want to taste them all. In Rome, stop for pizza Romana by the Spanish Steps or go to a local restaurant and eat cacio e pepe, made simply with Pecorino Romano and loads of black pepper. Tuscan food focuses on fresh produce, such as legumes, olives, beef and pork, and every meal comes with freshly baked bread. Or enjoy a totally unique dining experience and eat in a baroque castle in Sicily. At Castello San Marco, you’ll dine on fresh seafood on the foreshore of the Mediterranean.
