he most important lesson I’ve learned about fatherhood? Always carry tissues and try to hang onto your sense of humour. Between Trump’s election, Brexit and the deaths of Prince, David Bowie and others, people talk about 2016 as being a historical low point for mankind. But it turned out to be the best year of my life. Leicester City won the Premier League and I became a dad. My own father died when I was 11. But I was lucky because I always had a lot of male role models in my life – my brother, my godfather, an English teacher, even a couple of older mates. That convinced me you don’t have to be a biological dad to become a father figure. All sorts of people can play a formative role in a child’s life. (And I don’t believe that my childless mates somehow lead shallow, self-absorbed lives either. They just go on way more exotic holidays.) Of course, fatherhood changed me in multiple ways. For example, every morning I now put on my T-shirt inside-out so when it inevitably gets covered in toddler snot and regurgitated Weetbix, I just do a quick switcheroo before I leave the house. The most terrifying thing about having kids is that they’re always watching you. They’re always copying what you do.

That does force you to try and raise your game. Fatherhood is the Champions League of manhood in that respect. Somehow you’ve got to find new levels of patience, selflessness and tolerance. Easier said than done when Baby Shark is on repeat. I don’t think men identify with each other as dads in the same way women connect with each other as mums. That’s a shame because we’re probably going through a lot of common experiences but we tend to experience them in isolation. That’s why two mates and I launched The Father Hood (the-father-hood.com), to try and create an online community for dads so we can stumble through the chaos together. Parenthood is life turned up to 11. You’ll get those sudden moments of giddy joy and then others when you want to gnaw off your own kneecaps with frustration. So it probably does expand your emotional bandwidth. Or leave you with a thousand-yard stare.
