We also want to encourage you to celebrate you, which is why we’ve included a laundry list of simple self-care practices (page 30), luxurious face masks to pamper (page 20) and more. Through the celebration of individuality that fills these pages, we hope to remind you that you matter.

BASE CAMP How to find your perfect foundation
There are a few things to know in order to ace your base. Priceline Hair & Make-up Director Sarah Laidlaw shares her top tips.
UNDERSTAND YOUR UNDERTONE
Your undertone is the colour beneath the skin surface that affects your overall colouring. “Undertones are different to skin colour,” says Sarah. “Your skin colour may get lighter or darker depending on the time of year, but your undertone never changes.” Why is this important? Select a foundation with the correct undertone and you’ll look fresh. Choose wrong and make-up looks washed-out and mask-like.

For gorgeous texture sans damage, try this tool-free styling hack. Sometimes referred to as the ‘sock curl’, it involves twisting your hair around a pair of long, thin socks or stockings. It’s best to use a crisscross method, crossing hair over the sock then under it. Another tried-and-true method: apply a conditioning spray, wind heat-free rollers into damp hair before bed and wake up to curls.
“Get your basics right first.”
Naturally grey hair is a major trend. Keen to join the club? There’s a smorgasbord of products to help. For those already colouring their hair, a visit to your stylist might be in order. Professional advice is commonly to blend growth with highlights while the dye grows out – this can be mimicked at home with a streaking kit. If you’re already grey and want to add dimension to your colour, try a semipermanent toner.

17. Clairol Nice’n Easy Repair in 5 Medium Brown, $15.99.
For perfectly styled strands, you’ll need to get your wash-day basics right first. A clarifying shampoo will remove product build-up and leave you with super-shiny hair, while a nourishing mask will ensure it is soft, hydrated and easy to tame.
12. Hask Argan Oil 5-In-1 Leave-In Spray 175mL, $14.99. 13. Freestyle Bendy Rollers Value Pack 28 Pack, $17.99. 15
18. TRESemmé Deep Cleansing Shampoo 900mL, $10.99. 20. Bear Fruits Flamingo Smooth + Soft Hair Mask & Cap 20mL, $12.99.

14
DO THE SLIDE
Hair slides are the fastest way to make your ’do look ‘done’. To create a chic style in seconds, twist the front section of your hair on either side back towards the ear, then add a slide (or a few, if you fancy) to hold. 14. Lady Jayne Pro Fashion Pins 3 Pack, $11.99.
17
16
Happily, wrangling a hairdryer is no longer required – hot airbrushes are here to help. Designed to deliver a salon-style finish, they mimic the sleek look of a blow-dry but are much easier to master. Brush hair in sections for all-over smoothness or just tackle the top layers. Opt for one with rapid heating and you’ll be out the door in no time. 19. VS Sassoon Digital Sensor Hot Air Styler, $99.95. PRICELINE.COM. AU

Normal skin: Most tanning formulas suit this skin type as you’re not working against a particular issue, so choose your favourite to use.
About face
Dry skin: Make a creamy product your go-to. “The thicker base usually includes natural butters and oils to hydrate the skin,” explains Priceline Beauty Advisor Chloe Sibbel.
As well as delivering a healthy glow, facial tanners help to disguise scarring and uneven skin. Chloe’s top tips? Try mixing tanning drops into your regular moisturiser and using a mitt to evenly buff the product in.

5
2. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Natural Bronze Body Lotion 250mL, $10.49.
Flawless finish
Oily skin: Steer clear of heavy creams and opt for a lightweight foam or water instead. 3. MineTan Ultra Dark Express Self Tan Mousse 200mL, $21.99. 7
Sensitive skin: Choose gentle products with natural ingredients to avoid any unwanted flare-ups. 4. St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Vitamins Bronzing Water Mist 200mL, $49.99.
10. Bondi Sands Coconut & Sea Salt Body Scrub 250g, $18.99. 11. Vaseline Intensive Care Body Lotion Cocoa Glow 225mL, $5.39.
The bronze age
Mature skin can benefit from a faux glow. “It evens out skin tone and creates a smoother appearance,” says Chloe. As we age, skin is prone to dryness so exfoliate first to avoid patchiness and opt for hydrating formulas like oils or gradual tanners.
9
5. Le Tan Uber Fast Self Tanning Foam Violet Base 200mL, $29.99. 6. Dove Summer Glow Gradual Self Tan Body Lotion Medium To Dark Skin 400mL, $10.99.
12
PRICELINE.COM.AU
To keep your tan looking beautiful for as long as possible, it’s important to exfoliate. But because oil can leave your tan patchy, oil-free formulas are a must, says Chloe. It’s also vital to moisturise after every shower. If your tan starts to crack, scrub, then even it out with a gradual tanner.

As the temperature dips, it’s clear Autumn is on its way, and with it comes a raft of common skin conditions that can affect the whole family. Learn how to prevent and treat them below. 2
3
Rosacea
This inflammatory condition causes dilated blood vessels, making you look flushed. It can also present with small pimple-like bumps, which means it’s sometimes mistaken for acne. According to Priceline Pharmacist Linh Nghiem, it’s crucial to pinpoint triggers. “They vary but can include stress, cold weather, spicy food, alcohol, exercise, hot showers, sun exposure and humidity.” The goal of treatment is to reduce severity and prevent complications. “Prescription topical creams and oral treatments are often first-line treatment, but you need to see your GP about these.” Your Pharmacist can help you develop a skincare routine geared to reduce redness using non-sensitising, fragrance-free products. 1. Avène Antirougeurs Fort Relief Concentrate 30mL, $41.99. 2. Clear Skincare BB Red Cover Cream 50g, $32. 3. Avène A-Oxitive Antioxidant Defense Serum 30mL, $59.99.

This common condition causes dry, red and itchy skin. It can flare up all year, but cold outdoor air and dry, heated environments tend to make it worse. “Apply a moisturiser to the whole body at least twice a day plus an anti-itch product on any affected areas,” advises Priceline Pharmacist Jeyda Shiaxiates. “It’s also important to choose mild soaps and washes.” 6. MooGoo Eczema & Psoriasis Cream 200g, $24. 7. Ego QV Flare Up Wash 150mL, $12.99. 8. Cetaphil Face Gentle Foaming Cleanser 236mL, $16.99.

This is a catch-all term for different types of skin inflammation, so depending on the type you have, treatment options vary. As always, it’s key to see a health professional for diagnosis. In the meantime, calm a dry, itchy complexion with hydrating products that help to rebuild the skin barrier. In many cases, prevention is crucial, so avoid hot showers or baths as these can dry out the skin, making it susceptible to a flare-up.

Hand, foot and mouth
Occurring mainly in kids aged 10 and under, this is usually a mild illness. It causes an itchy rash, blisters and sometimes low fevers. See a Doctor for advice, especially if fevers are involved. To soothe the rash, try dabbing on calamine lotion.
Psoriasis
“Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition,” says Jeyda. “It can appear as inflammation, redness and scales, and sometimes patches will crack and bleed.” Sufferers should see a Doctor as there are medications that may help. To calm skin, reach for a moisturiser with soothing ingredients.

9. DermaVeen Extra Hydration Intensive Moisturising Lotion 500mL, $18.99. 10
Cold sores
Once you’ve contracted the herpes simplex virus, Linh says cold sore outbreaks can be triggered by everything from “hot sun, cold wind, changing hormone levels and stress to a cold”. The good news is they’re easily treated, and there is research suggesting vitamin C can be helpful – ask your health professional. 10. Swisse Ultiboost High Strength C 1,000mg 150 Tablets, $29.49. 11. Zovirax Cold Sore Cream Tube 2g, $15.99.
17
When dealing with irritation – on your face or body – avoid fragranced skincare and instead go for gentle formulas. Try to identify the cause of redness with a Pharmacist or Doctor. It may stem from a chronic condition or be a temporary reaction. 13. Bioderma Sensibio AR Anti-Redness Care 40mL, $42.99. 14. Ego QV Face Moisturising Day Cream SPF 30 75g, $16.59. 15. Teens: Acne
1
3
4 5
Acne affects more than 90 per cent of Australians aged 16 to 18. Once puberty starts, there’s an increase in hormones, which can cause sebaceous glands to go into overdrive. When there’s too much oil, pores get blocked and bacteria proliferate. Next minute? Pimples. To treat, a streamlined skincare routine is crucial. Incorporate products that contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide – both are proven acne-fighters. Moisturising is important to calm inflammation and balance the skin, so don’t skip it. And sunscreen
is a non-negotiable – aside from the obvious (UV protection), it prevents the sun from darkening post-acne scars. Try an oil-free formula created for acne-prone skin. 1. Clear Skincare Sunscreen SPF 30+ 50g, $30. 2. Benzac Daily Facial Foam Cleanser 130mL, $13.49. 3. Skin Republic Spot Clear Salicylic Acid Patch 48 Pack, $9.99. 4. ZitSticka Killa Clarifying Microdart Patch Kit, $39.99. 5. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel 200mL, $25.99.
Twenties: Uneven texture
6
18
Enlarged pores, mild scarring, rashes… uneven skin texture can first rear its head now. To reduce the appearance of large pores, look for products with charcoal – it helps to absorb impurities. Exfoliants based on AHAs and BHAs can help to minimise blackheads. You might also try an at-home

During this decade, many experience a sudden onset of sun spots thanks to years of UV. This requires a multipronged approach. First, start wearing sunscreen daily to prevent pigment from worsening. Next, adopt a treatment that gently resurfaces skin, such as an exfoliant with AHA (lactic and glycolic acids are good). You could also try retinol (vitamin A), which helps to speed up cell turnover. Melasma (hormonally induced patches of pigment) is another type of pigmentation that often occurs in pregnant women. Check with your Pharmacist or Beauty Advisor to learn which products are safe. 11. Fifties: Menopausal skin
An array of skin concerns can be brought on by the diminishing oestrogen levels associated with menopause. You might notice prolonged redness from hot flashes or breakouts caused by increased oiliness. See your Doctor or Pharmacist for advice. If symptoms are mild, skincare can help. Redness responds well to products formulated to minimise flushing, while spots can be nixed with pimple treatments.

Beyond: Sagging skin
Forties: Wrinkles
While facial wrinkles are signs of a life well-lived, they can be unwelcome. As we age, fine lines give way to wrinkle folds, deeper grooves caused by a natural laxity of facial structures. You can’t camouflage this type of wrinkle using skincare, but you can minimise their appearance. Plumping the skin with hyaluronic acid can assist temporarily, and there’s evidence that a collagen supplement can help to support the skin’s structure.

Ageing comes with many benefits, but dwindling collagen stores and muscle loss aren’t among them. Firming skincare products can go some way towards creating the illusion of tighter skin. A solid moisturiser or hydrating serum can help to plump skin, while retinol can boost collagen production. Talk to your Priceline Beauty Advisor if you’re considering it. 9. You’re pregnant! Congratulations. Now the fun begins. Ahead of you lies a whirlwind of scans, appointments and checks. Although there will be plenty of exciting times to come, there can also be some steep learning curves – it pays to be prepared.
Sort your supplements
PREP YOUR BEAUTY BAG
The main supplement most women will have on their radar is folic acid, but did you know you should start taking it prior to conception? “The recommendation is for women to take 400mcg of folic acid and 150mcg of iodine daily for at least four weeks prior to conception and for the first three months of pregnancy,” says GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander. Folic acid can decrease the risk of certain birth defects of the brain and spinal cord, and iodine is essential for healthy brain development. For some women, extra supplements such as iron or vitamin B12 may be appropriate – all the more reason to visit your GP for a pre-pregnancy blood test. Cenovis Women’s Folic Acid 500mcg 150 Tablets, $12.49. Blackmores I-Folic 150 Tablets, $19.49.
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use.
During pregnancy there are a few skincare ingredients you can no longer use. Chief among them: retinol. Some experts recommend you veto products containing hydroquinone and more than 2% salicylic acid as well. Always read the label. Follow the directions for use.
Remember to floss Vital vitamins As when trying to conceive, folic acid and iodine are the most recommended supplements for the first trimester. However, Dr. Preeya says there are others that can be of benefit, too. “Vitamin D is also recommended for many women but it’s worth chatting to your GP, midwife or obstetrician about whether it’s right for you. Iron may be suggested but this is dependent on medical history and blood results.” Ostelin Vitamin D3 1000IU 60 Capsules, $10.99. Blackmores Bio Iron Advanced 30 Tablets, $15.99.

GP & Priceline Health Expert
It’s thought that pregnancy can cause dental issues for some women due to – what else? – changing hormones. To help counter the effects of pregnancy on your teeth and gums, brush with a fluoride toothpaste and floss twice daily. It’s a great idea to visit your dentist for a check-up to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. Oral-B Satin Tape Mint Dental Floss 25 Metres, $3.49.
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
A note on morning sickness While most women deal with morning sickness early on, for a select few it can continue into the second and third trimesters. A morning sickness supplement can help to relieve symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. If you’re still suffering, see your Pharmacist or Doctor for advice on which medications might help you. Elevit Morning Sickness Relief 30 Tablets, $18.99.
Book in with your GP to chat through any concerns. Dr. Preeya says the key points are: past medical conditions and vaccination history, blood tests to check for things like rubella immunity, whether you should take supplements and genetic carrier screening. PRICELINE.COM. AU

SAVE YOUR STRANDS Many enjoy full, lustrous hair during pregnancy from a natural uptick in oestrogen, which boosts hair growth. The downside? Postpartum hair loss – a sometimes dramatic shedding after your baby is born. While you can’t prevent this cycle completely, you can manage it with nutrition and gentle haircare.

Simplify your skincare Pregnancy hormones can bring on dryness, sensitivity and breakouts (not everyone gets the “glow”). Make things easy with a gentle cleanser and simple moisturiser, then add in a treatment product to target symptoms (remember: retinol is a no-no). Some women experience an uptick in pigmentation thanks to melasma, a condition that can be triggered by increased levels of oestrogen and progesterone. To help counteract this, ensure you’re applying a high-protection sunscreen daily and avoid the sun. 1. Sun Bum Face Lotion SPF 50+ 88mL, $17.99. 2. Avène Cleanance Comedomed 30mL, $29.99. 3. The Jojoba Company Hydrating Day Cream 50mL, $32.99. 4. Sukin Foaming Facial Cleanser 125mL, $11.99.

POSTNATAL Once your baby has arrived, it may feel as though time passes in a blur. Between newborn snuggles, feeding and sleeping, your days will be jam-packed. But remember to continue to make time to look after yourself. With a bit of planning, practice and a few key products, it will all be much easier.
Among the many changes your body is likely to experience during pregnancy, one of the most common is stretch marks, which can appear on your breasts, hips and blossoming bump. They’re largely genetic but many women swear by nourishing oils and body butters to keep skin supple. 5. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Lotion For Stretch Marks 250mL, $16.99. 6. Bio-Oil Skincare Oil 125mL, $24.99. 7. Weleda Stretch Mark Massage Oil 100mL, $28.89. 6 5

5 MINUTES TO WELLNESS
A
ccording to Priceline’s recent Australia’s Health Report: when healthcare meets selfcare*, Australian women are more stressed than men, across all generations (women aged 16 to 24 are particularly affected, with one in six reporting high stress levels). While stress is a normal part of life, if it’s severe and persistent it can take a toll over time. It’s for this reason that GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander says ongoing stress management is important. “The goal isn’t necessarily to get rid of it completely but to implement simple changes that can help.” To that end, we’re embracing super-easy self-care strategies that can relieve tension in just five minutes.
“The goal is to implement simple changes that can help stress.”

Aromatherapy, the practice of using aromatic plant oils to promote wellbeing, is said to help enhance emotional health. Devotees report a reduction in the perception of stress and increased contentment. Sound good? All you need to get amongst it is an essential oil or two. Get ready to feel good

Write it down
It’s easy to feel burdened by what’s going on in your life if your mind is forever swirling with too much information. Trying to remember what to buy for dinner, who said they’d pick up the kids and when the dog is due to be wormed is a lot. Make a list of what needs to be done – it’ll allow you to prioritise, taking away that feeling of chasing your own tail.
Enjoy a drink
Taking a few minutes to prepare a drink you enjoy is a quick and easy practice most can integrate into their day. Herbal tea can be restorative and offer the chance to sit still for a moment. Other options include water spiked with collagen powder (for extra beauty benefits) and kombucha served on ice. 3. Swisse Beauty Collagen Glow Powder 120g, $29.99.
Phone a friend
As the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved. If there’s something on your mind that’s making you stressed, consider enlisting the help of a loved one. Sometimes simply explaining how you feel out loud can put things in perspective or inspire a new course of action – and if your buddy gives excellent advice, feel free to ask for that, too.
Have a laugh
There’s evidence that laughter can boost endorphins and aid in muscle relaxation, helping to create a feeling of calm. To take advantage, all you need to do is find a way to chuckle. Switch on a sitcom, ask a friend to tell you a joke or read a few pages of a funny book. Even an Instagram meme can be enough to produce a quick giggle.

Treat tired skin
Think you can’t boost parched skin in a hurry? You can. A quick sheet mask can infuse even the most sensitive skin with moisture, leaving it soft and fresh in minutes. To enhance the experience, use a chilled facial roller over the top. 4. Flawless Finishing Touch Contour Facial Roller & Massager, $39.99. 5. Simple Water Boost 5 Minute Reset Hydrogel Mask 33.5g, $4.99.
Just say no
Feeling overwhelmed by a never-ending to-do list? Learn the power of saying no. Whether it’s declining a playdate invitation or informing a colleague that you don’t have capacity to take on another task, saying no can help you reclaim control over your schedule. If the person overcrowding your day is you, consider what you can strike off your agenda or move until tomorrow.
Go back to basics
When life’s busy, we tend to make our own wellbeing our last priority. But it pays to make time for a little bit of self-care. Take a relaxing shower, do your skincare routine, moisturise your legs, brush your teeth and drink a tall glass of water – once you’ve taken care of you, you can take care of others. 6. Jergens Ultra Healing+ Hand & Body Cream 100mL, $7.99. 7. Oral-B Power Toothbrush Pro 3000, $149.99. 8. Antipodes Hosanna Culture Set, $59.99. PRICELINE.COM. AU

t’s no secret that becoming a parent means saying goodbye to sleep-ins. But while it’s normal for your sleep patterns to change as they sync up with your child’s, it’s important to ensure you’re still getting enough shut-eye as there are a number of risks associated with exhaustion, says Priceline Pharmacist Melissa Gannon. “Health-related concerns include an increased risk of depression and anxiety, and an increased risk and severity of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.” If you’re struggling to get the sleep you need, try Melissa’s advice: “While your baby is settling into their feeding and sleeping routine, it’s important to focus on yours, too.” If you can, nap during the day when the baby does and try to go to bed early at night. Too much to do? “Your list of jobs can wait,” says Melissa. “You won’t be effective at getting anything done without sleep.” It’s not just new mums who find sleeping difficult. “Changes to our body clocks as we get older, combined with an increased likelihood of medical conditions, can mean our sleep patterns change,” explains Melissa. If you can squeeze in a nap, remember that this time contributes to the total number of hours of sleep per day, so you may not need eight hours at night. Some medications can also make it harder to sleep. Knowing when to reach out for help is vital, not only to save your sanity but to also rule out any potentially worrisome causes, such as sleep apnoea. “If sleep deprivation is interfering with your daytime functioning, you should see a health professional to discuss your options,” says Melissa. And there are lots of them. Here are some of Melissa’s favourites…
Bioglan Sleep Tablets 90 Tablets, $24.49.
Natio Spa Relaxing Magnesium & Mineral Bath Salts 350g, $14.95.
STICK TO A ROUTINE
Not just for babies, a pre-bed routine can help you wind down. “Try listening to music, meditating, journalling or whatever works to relax you.” Melissa also recommends going to bed and rising at the same time each day.
AVOID CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL
“Steer clear of caffeine – coffee, tea and caffeinated soft drinks – close to bedtime,” says Melissa. Depending on how quickly you metabolise caffeine, this could mean within three to seven hours of going to bed. It’s also a good idea to avoid or minimise alcohol. “It might help you to sleep initially but it actually makes it harder to stay asleep.”
EXERCISE IN THE MORNING
“Exercising each day is important for many aspects of health, including sleep,” explains Melissa. “However, for some, exercising in the last hour before bed can interfere with getting to sleep as our bodies are still stimulated.”
SAY NO TO SCREENS

Caring for an elderly parent
For many, there comes a time when the parent and child roles reverse. Although this is challenging, it can be a gift to spend quality time with your parent in their golden years. As a carer, it’s important to take time out to recharge, so make sure you factor in a well-deserved break.
Making it through menopause
Menopause is a transformative period but one seldom discussed in a positive light. While you might experience unpleasant symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats (if you do, see your health professional about what can help), it’s also a major life milestone worth celebrating.

AGEING GRACEFULLY LOOKS different for everybody. While some prefer to use skincare and make-up to enhance their changing features, others prefer a more holistic approach. If you’re interested in exploring the latter, these natural supplements may assist in supporting your skin and overall wellbeing as you get older.
This protein occurs naturally in the body, but (like many things!) it depletes with age. Collagen supplements have been creating quite a buzz lately, but the benefits depend on the type you take. Types 1 and 3 are believed to help improve skin health and elasticity, while type 2 may support joint health. 1. Dr. LeWinn’s Marine Collagen Peptide+ Inner Beauty Powder 6g 30 Pack, $59.99.
Vit amin C
Renowned for its anti-ageing benefits, vitamin C is said to promote the formation of collagen. It’s also a powerful antioxidant, meaning it works to reduce the effects of freeradical damage. 2. Cenovis Sugarless C 500mg Orange Flavour 300 Tablets, $19.99.

JOINT VENTURES KNEES NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE? CONSIDER THIS EXPERT ADVICE You might feel like you’re the only person with creaky hips or sore shoulders, but GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander says you’re not alone. “When we talk about joint pain, people often assume we are only talking about osteoarthritis in older individuals, but joint pain can affect younger people, too – it’s fairly common!” Joint pain can be a symptom of many conditions, from arthritis and gout to some STIs, which is why it’s important to seek medical advice. As for pain management, it depends on the cause of your sore joints. “In rheumatoid arthritis we’d advise pain relief but also the addition of medications to treat the underlying disease,” says Dr. Preeya. “In gout, anti-inflammatories are often used to treat the pain, but management extends to reviewing lifestyle factors such as intake of alcohol and purine-rich foods like liver.”
DR. PREEYA’S TIPS FOR HEALTHY JOINTS
1
STAY ACTIVE “Choose lower-impact exercises such as swimming, walking and cycling – they may be kinder to your joints.”
2
MANAGE YOUR WEIGHT “In those who suffer from osteoarthritis of the hips and knees, a weight loss of five to 10 per cent can help with pain.”
3
SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE “Don’t suffer in silence – see a Doctor or Pharmacist for diagnosis and help with managing pain.” PRICELINE.COM. AU

Expert advice on staying well this Autumn
ith a greater focus on immunity than ever before, it’s no surprise we’re all looking for new ways to help fortify our body’s defence systems. Fortunately, there are a whole host of expertapproved tips and tricks to help you do just that. But, first things first, what exactly is the immune system? GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander explains that it’s a network mainly made up of white blood cells and a few organs (such as the spleen and tonsils) with defensive capabilities. “It’s a complex system whose role is to defend your body against infection.” Dr. Preeya says it’s a myth that you can ‘boost’ your immune system (“You can’t supercharge it or get it to function at superpower levels”), but you can support it in doing its job. Start by looking at your lifestyle. “Unmanaged stress can negatively impact the immune system,” says Dr. Preeya. “When cortisol levels rise, it can diminish the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens such as bacteria and viruses.” Similarly, sleep deprivation can prevent the immune system from functioning at optimal levels. “Sleep gives the immune system a chance to recharge

and recover,” says Dr. Preeya. “When you’re tired, you may notice you’re more likely to get sick.” You can also support your immunity by staying active and eating a well-balanced diet full of fruit and vegies. If you suspect you may be deficient in a vitamin or mineral, see your health professional for personalised advice. “If you have a diagnosed deficiency (from a blood test) – such as iron or vitamin B12 – you might see benefits from a supplement,” says Dr. Preeya. As we move into the chilly season, there’s one more thing we can do to stay well. “Keep on top of your vaccinations, including the flu vaccine,” says Dr. Preeya. “Lifestyle tweaks are great – and important! – but staying up-to-date with suggested vaccines in adulthood is a crucial way to support your immune system.”

THE AWKWARD ASK A Priceline Pharmacist answers the health questions you might be too embarrassed to pose medication, including oral capsules, intravaginal creams and pessaries. “These treatments are equally effective and, depending on your symptoms, your Pharmacist may recommend multiple options,” says Linh. “If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your Pharmacist so they can recommend the best option.”
INCONTINENCE
Linh Nghiem
A
Priceline Pharmacist
ccording to Priceline and YouGov’s Stress Study, which surveyed more than 1000 Australian women aged 18 and over last year, many of us are reluctant to share our health concerns with a medical professional – 47 per cent of women said they’ve self-diagnosed online rather than discuss their condition with a Doctor or Pharmacist. Here, Priceline Pharmacist Linh Nghiem tells us how to treat some common (yet rarely discussed) complaints.
THRUSH
Vaginal thrush is an infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast, with the imbalance often occurring due to medication use (antibiotics, oral steroids, oral contraceptive pills), hormonal changes in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or illnesses including diabetes and iron deficiency. Treatment options: Linh says mild cases can be treated with over-the-counter antifungal
“Defined as an involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control, incontinence affects more than five million Australians,” says Linh. There are different types of urinary incontinence, such as urge (a sudden need to urinate), stress (leaking urine during coughing, sneezing, etc), urinary retention (an inability to fully empty the bladder) and nocturia (waking up to wee). Treatment options: It depends on the type, but plenty can be done to help. “Lifestyle changes such as exercising regularly and good toilet habits can lead to improvements,” says Linh. Your Doctor can prescribe medication to calm an
overactive bladder or refer you to a physio who specialises in the condition. A Pharmacist can also recommend incontinence products such as wipes, washes, pads and pants.
HAEMORRHOIDS
Haemorrhoids are enlarged or swollen veins around the outside of the anus or in the lower rectum. “They can be internal or external, and are then categorised based on severity,” says Linh. You may notice blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet after a bowel motion. “There may also be itchiness, discomfort or pain around the anus or you may find a lump,” says Linh. Treatment options: “Pain and inflammation can often be relieved with over-thecounter treatments including medicated creams, ointments and suppositories,” says Linh. “If inflammation is severe, your Pharmacist may recommend a corticosteroid cream, too.” They might also suggest lifestyle modifications to keep you regular and prevent recurrence.

THE TOOLKIT
n recent years, there has been a growing focus on supporting gut health. Known as your ‘second brain’, the gut microbiome is home to trillions of organisms (think: bacteria, viruses and even fungi), some friendly and some not. Experts believe the relationship between these and the rest of your body can affect your overall wellbeing. GP and Priceline Health Expert Dr. Preeya Alexander says it’s an area we’re still learning a lot about: “We know the gut plays a role in immune health and also in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.” A preventative approach can be of benefit. Dr. Preeya’s advice? Keep it simple. “Eat plenty of fibre,” she says. “It’s been shown to help with the growth of good bacteria.” If you have trouble ticking off your two and five, a fibre supplement may help. “Eating a wide variety of richly coloured fruits, vegies and wholegrains helps introduce more good bugs into the gut,” adds Dr. Preeya. You may have heard that fermented foods such as kimchi and kefir are good for your gut. “Fermented foods are rich in good stuff like bacteria and enzymes that help support your gut health,” says Priceline Pharmacist Melissa Gannon. Pre- and probiotics may also help good gut bacteria to flourish, promoting a healthier digestive system if you’re in need of extra support. (Ask your Doctor or Pharmacist which strains could be beneficial to you.) Bone broth is generating buzz as well – it’s rich in gelatin, which may help soothe inflammation and support wellbeing. Apple cider vinegar capsules can help ease inflammation and assist sluggish digestion, too. And remember, never be embarrassed to talk to a Pharmacist about any gut problems – they see many people with the same issues and it’s their job to help.
