WELCOME

I

I’M SLOWER NOW, MORE IN TOUCH WITH MY FEELINGS AND WHAT I REALLY WANT TO DO...

’m a planner. I’ve always been that way. At the age of four I locked in my choices from The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book for every year until I turned 10 and planned my birthday parties down to the contents of the lolly bags five months out. As an adult, the fi rst thing I do every morning, before I’ve even wiped the sleep from my eyes, is decide on all my meals for the day, but mostly I channel my planning skills into meticulously researched and documented holiday itineraries. Pre-COVID, I liked to have two on the go at once so that as one trip ended I was already able to enjoy the anticipation of another, a light at the end of the tunnel of the everyday. Last year left all of us shook in some way or another, but none more so than the planners, like me, who learned – quickly and brutally – one basic truth: you can’t control everything. Things are not always going to go to plan, as per your perfectly formatted vacation planning spreadsheet. The only thing any of us know for sure in 2021 is that none of us ever really knows what life is going to throw our way. And whether that’s in the form of cancelled trips or cancelled Christmases, or anxiety before an interstate shoot in case the borders close (which happened to us a couple of times in the making of this issue), it’s taught us new skills in rolling with the punches and living more in the moment. I’m grateful for the lesson. I’ve become a person who doesn’t have a visceral panicked reaction when plans change in ways that are out of my hands, or when my time is taken up with something I hadn’t expected to have to allocate time to that day. I’ve realised you don’t have to spend more hours researching the thing than you spend on doing the thing to still have a great time. Like everyone, I’m slower now, more in touch with my feelings and what I really want to do and where I really want to be any particular time, instead of needing to predict it three weeks out. I spend a lot more time lying on the floor with my kids talking to them about stuff, instead of trying to drag them to places in an attempt to maximise our Living in the moment with days off. Some weekends we Elsa Pataky on our cover shoot do nothing at all. It’s lovely. This season at David Jones is dedicated to our newfound skills at being in the moment. From slowing down (like covergirl Elsa Pataky, page 56) to making the most of every minute, right where you are (especially if that happens to be on a weekend away with your girlfriends, page 74), I can’t think of a better way to be. Enjoy the issue,

When I hear the phrase ‘in the moment’ I think of being focused in the moment at hand without distraction from the past or future. I try to practise this daily with mindfulness and meditation. Meditation has had a profoundly positive impact on me. It has helped me to feel myself and be less inhibited. It’s wildly important for me to begin the day with a sense of ritual, something that grounds me and serves as the anchor point for the rest of my day no matter how chaotic it may become. My daughter has taught me to see things through her eyes, with all the fever of a first meeting. Every moment for her is precious because it’s new. She is such a curious, passionate little being and it’s inspiring to see her eyes full of wonder at our beautiful world.

To be in the moment, you have to understand your role and what you are bringing to the game and then trust yourself to deliver that. I always thought that if I was thinking instead of doing on the field, I was not in the moment. Something I’ve realised is that the only person that can help me be in the moment is myself. It’s my choice and it’s my processes in the lead-up that will help me get to that. Over the past year, when things have felt limited, I’ve always focused on what I can do – not what I can’t. This has helped me stay positive with a situation happening around me that I had no control over. If I had an extra hour in the day, I would spend it on myself, going for a swim in the ocean. When I’m feeling good, everyone and everything around me benefits from that.

When I hear the phrase ‘in the moment’ I think of being so all-consumed by one thing that you are truly present. [I have to admit] I struggle with that; my mind is always scattered in about 34 different directions. The last time I truly felt in the moment was during guided meditation a couple of weeks ago. It makes sense that I would be in the moment while doing an activity that requires you to be fully present and aware. I feel uninhibited most of the time – it’s in my personality. Given the nature of my job, I’m constantly having to give all of me: my thoughts, feelings, ideas. It can get to a point where I feel like I’m being extracted from so I like being able to be restrained. If I had an extra hour in the day, I’d spend it painting, crafting or anything that has me conceptualising and making.

T

he recent deluge of playful, tongue-in-cheek trends emerged as somewhat of a sartorial salve; a reflection of our desire to channel optimism wherever possible (even lockdown tracksuit sets came in every colour of the rainbow). But now? Dressing up is cool again, realised this season in exaggerated volume, bold colours, interesting shapes and party-ready accessories. As we move forward into AW21, the effervescence of smiley motifs, kitschy flowers and tie-dye prints from last season are sticking around but take on a cold-weather finish through floral prints, exaggerated lines and pops of electric monochrome. And volume is only getting to be more, ahem, voluminous with balloon dresses and skirts worn beneath candy-coloured knits or topped off with a puffer jacket. And though that appreciation for fun, bright, pretty, printed pieces evokes a comforting type of nostalgia, fashion need not regress to tap into a sense of play. Baby-doll dresses, micro bags and velcro sandals are grown-up ways to feel uninhibited. Of course, we can’t forget the movers and shakers. For them, there’s fringing, which lends itself not only to hitting dancefloors but to going viral on TikTok, too. Swish! Look to new muses; those who embrace fashion’s irreverence best. Take designer Blanca Miró Scrimieri, who shuffles around the house in yellow Roger Vivier slippers with oversized crystal buckles (casj!). Or creative director and floral artist Alfred Bramsen, whose love of swishy skirts and the colour pink is as joy-inducing as the dinnerware and cakes spotted on his Instagram. And speaking of cakes, though retro-look cakes are making a comeback, we’ll go on record as saying there’s nothing that can make you as happy as @juujuucake. It’s also what we have at home that guarantees a good time – polka dot plants, squiggly candlesticks, patchwork quilts, coloured glassware and checkerboard everything. Finding ways to be more expressive, less prescriptive and adopt a sense of joy? That’s the new normal. ¾ Maison Balzac* embraces the trend

Forever young

The best part about new Celine, under creative director Hedi Slimane, is the universality. While the French brand still stands for luxury, its pieces can be cherished by Gen-Z and their grandmothers alike. Take, for instance, the new Triomphe bag, $5100; with its textured, logo emblazoned canvas, its understated gold clasp and a cross-body strap, it’s destined to be paired with grownup tailoring but looks at home with sleek sweats, too. This ageless, timeless, trendless dressing is the fresh 2021 collective mood.

BIG LITTLE LOOK

“I love playing with extreme proportions and contrasting textures when styling a turtleneck. This winter I’ll be investing in a super oversized knit style in a luxe natural fabric. I’ll be wearing it layered over loosely tailored wool trousers and sneakers by day or over a silky slip for evening.” – Shadiya Nusrat, senior brand manager at David Jones

“Sade feels synonymous with iconic turtleneck moments. Paired with her signature slick hair, red lipstick and gold hoops, it’s become the fail-safe fashion formula to lean on when I don’t know what to wear.” – Hilary Bourke, copywriter at David Jones

But it’s also perfect layered under a suit when the weather hasn’t quite decided what it’s doing.” – Claudia Jukic, style editor at JONES

SCANLAN THEODORE turtleneck, $500.

MAKE IT WORK

SHRANKHLA HOLECEK HOW I START MY DAY: I spend the first 20 minutes of the morning in bed flagging urgent emails, peeking at the UMA Oils website and social media accounts to rule out any emergencies, and browsing news headlines. I get ready pretty quickly (boarding school training!) but have detox rituals I undertake religiously – tongue scraping, dry brushing, a quick pre-shower self massage with oil – but I’ve got them down to about a five-minute total. The make-up I can’t live without is UMA’s Ultimate Brightening Toner and Absolute Anti Aging Face Oil, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, Diorshow Mascara and a YSL Volupte Shine in a nude shade. I wear a lot of white, flowy pieces and heels often but days when I’m just with the UMA team, it’s a uniform of yoga pants and a sweater. WHAT KEEPS ME SANE: Cardio workouts in the day – either tennis, a short run or a spin class three-to-four times a week. A glass of red wine in the evening and, currently, the pause button on my inbox. I use a lot of essential oils – both the awakening and the sleep40

inducing kind – same with teas. While I take supplements often, even when I’m not on the road, I am religious about them while travelling. I use a lot of our own and also love Glow from The Beauty Chef. HOW I WORK: The CEO of a young company is both the highest authority and the janitor – often within a span of hours. I prefer to be a thought partner for every team member in every function rather than ‘boss lady’, as people problem-solve fantastically when they feel like they have ownership and are empowered to make decisions. THE WIND-DOWN: My husband and I are cooking more but sit down around the same time and catch up on our day. We’ll both do about 30 more minutes of work or email (I also take another 15-20 minutes on evening beauty rituals, gua-sha or jade rollers, a foot rub with Pure Calm Wellness Oil, slathering on our Absolute Anti Aging Body Oil) before watching a TV show and lights out at about 11pm. I have an ambitious to-do list every day but am more forgiving of myself if a few things spill over to the next. ¾

THE TIME IS NOW

PHOTOGRAPHY BEN WATTS / TRUNK ARCHIVE / SNAPPER IMAGES

W

After a year that has called for practicality and planning, Elle McClure asks how can we stir up a sense of being in the moment without evoking reckless abandon.

hether or not there’s a global pandemic occurring, a lot of things just absolutely would not go ahead if we didn’t plan them. Routine gets us to yoga, to the bus on time and to bed for our nightly eight hours. While this kind of structure provides stability and comfort amid uncertainty, even the best-kept routine needs flexibility, otherwise life can start to feel like one giant Google calendar. That’s where spontaneity comes in. Said to lower inhibitions, aid creativity and even counter anxiety, it doesn’t have to involve leaving your clothes in a pile on the sand while you run headlong into a body of water. The great thing about spontaneity is it often includes an element of novelty – doing something entirely new or doing it in a way we wouldn’t usually – which our brains thrive on. Novelty is recognised as crucial for brain health and development: as our brain is forced to process new stimuli, new synaptic connections between our sensory and motor neurons are created or existing ones are strengthened. These new experiences often also trigger dopamine in the body, which not only makes us happier but keeps us moving forward as humans, hungry for more new experiences. Experts liken it to playing video games: when you land on a new level, the excitement over what you might find there keeps you pushing forward, keen for more.

Of course in a world where there are 6000 tweets every second, 95 million photos and videos shared on Instagram daily, and one million videos viewed every day on TikTok, that desire for newness is constantly fed. But it’s not so much about your online feed as it is seeking out new offline experiences, exposing yourself to new environments or stimuli, and mastering new tasks – even if it’s a puzzle or knitting pattern (chic) at home. For the second instalment of their book The Right-Brain Workout, Russel Howcroft and Alex Wadelton are helping clear the brain fog with questions and challenges designed to get you to think differently. They range from imagining life as a pen in the White House, thinking up a new dance craze and drawing a self-portrait with your opposite hand. (Some of them sound like something you might do in school but that’s kind of the point.) Wadelton recalls a 1960s study that measured creativity in children, showing 98 per cent of five year olds approached problems in a highly creative way. By comparison, just two per cent of adults do. “Being creative is a natural state,” says Wadelton but for a variety of reasons we move away from it as we get older. He likens creative activities to going to the gym. “To make your body stronger and fitter you have to do it consistently, to get that work in. Your creative brain is no different. If you don’t work it out, it’s going to get weaker and weaker. Which is what happens as we grow older.” For Wadelton, creativity and spontaneity are closely linked. “Any way that you can experience something different to the usual is going to expand your mind and force you to grow in some way. “It’s so easy to just do the same old, same old all the time. But when you actively try and do new things, great things happen. So, try and do something you haven’t done before every day. It doesn’t have to be big, it just has to be different.” In his book Trying Not to Try: The Art of Effortlessness and the Power of Spontaneity, author Edward Slingerland explores how as relentless multitaskers we’re hardwired to think that routine and planning are the keys to success. But as Slingerland reminds us: “... many desirable states –

And if doing nothing conjures feelings of guilt or anxiety, Odell reminds us that’s quite normal in a world where we’re conditioned to think that doing nothing equates to laziness, instead of being a powerful tool to allow yourself the space for creativity and spontaneity. She believes, “Solitude, observation and simple conviviality should be recognised not only as ends in and of themselves, but inalienable rights belonging to anyone lucky enough to be alive.” How to get there? Odell calls for dropping out from technology, which she believes – while useful – largely keeps us distracted while the best parts of life happen offline. The state of anxiety, envy and distraction that she says social media can send us into is barely conducive to spontaneity. Instead, what is? Friends, family, community and nature. “We need to figure out ways to create a space for spontaneity to arise and not drown it out,” says Slingerland. As such, he’s another proponent for stopping yourself before you get lost in the endless scroll (translation: it’s time you finally made use of your phone’s timer limit function). Likewise, it can be useful to limit checking the news to once a day or emails only in work hours so you’re not trapped in a vortex of constant information. In a practical sense, these things can free you up for off time – even if you need to schedule in spontaneity to make it happen. And once you’re there? Slingerland says that spontaneity as an ideal can perhaps best be likened to the concept of flow, which was developed by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. “Flow happens when we hit the sweet spot between too easy and too hard,” explains Slingerland. Both Slingerland and Csikszentmihalyi hold that flow often accompanies the notion of something bigger than ourselves: whether it be people we love or ideas and values we feel strongly aligned with. Slingerland believes that in social settings flow “can occur in group activities only when we genuinely value the social relationships involved. We can effortlessly engage with others only when we care about, and feel relaxed with, the people we are with.” That sweet spot is determined by your level of genuine enjoyment and culminates in a loss of sense of self and time – like when you lose hours at a dinner party belly laughing with friends. In a recent episode of the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, comedian Amy Sedaris talks about one of her favourite pastimes, riffing with brother David Sedaris. She agreed with Conan O’Brien’s estimate that she spends hours in foolish fun “not moving the puzzle pieces of civilisation forward in any way” but, ultimately, she says, “We’re in the moment … always when you are right there, it’s like, you feel so alive. And I prefer that.” As counterintuitive as it might sound, it is possible to cultivate a sense of spontaneity, through actively carving out time and finding people and experiences that lead to the flow state. And when you get there, embrace spontaneity even if it means cancelling other plans or throwing your routine out entirely. After all, the flow that leads to spontaneity happens so rarely and can be such a joy that it shouldn’t be disrupted by the false concept of duty or an arbitrary routine. In a world where planning, streamlining and success are prized, there’s a certain joy to doing something off-the-cuff, to meandering, to doing nothing except being with people you love that almost feels like a radical act. Put down your phone, abandon the Google calendar version of the day (or even the next hour) you had planned and do something new just for the sake of it.

“Being creative is a natural state ... if you don’t work it out it’s going to get weaker and weaker.” happiness, attractiveness, spontaneity – are best pursued indirectly, and conscious thought and effortful striving can actually interfere with their attainment.” Striving for maximum productivity in all areas of our lives, constantly trying to optimise ourselves, along with our chronic aversion to wasting time can often mean that we end up “crowding out leisure time, vacation and simple unstructured pleasures”. It’s an idea which artist, author and avid birdwatcher Jenny Odell explores in her book How to Do Nothing. While she admits that for some people, “there may be a kind of engineer’s satisfaction in the streamlining and networking of our entire lived experience ... [we] still recognise that much of what gives one’s life meaning stems from accidents, interruptions and serendipitous encounters”. 44

LSA PATAKY is in slinky Dries Van Noten, a stylist expertly fluffing out the hemline of the dress so it falls just so around her ankles. A hair stylist plays redundantly with perfect waves that wouldn’t know how to fall out of place if they tried, while a make-up artist dabs at nonexistent imperfections (her skin is the colour of dulce de leche and just as smooth and creamy). Standing on the edge of a private jetty, the light hitting right where it’s supposed to, Pataky looks every bit a goddess, perfectly at home as the glamorous movie star being photographed for the cover of a fashion magazine. Famous since starring in a beloved Spanish soap opera at the age of 21, Pataky has been doing this all her adult life. Being on shoots is second nature to her. She enjoys fashion and getting dressed up; the woman knows her angles, which are many. But glamorous movie-star goddess is just one side of her. Another side – maybe the one she likes best – was revealed a few days before our shoot. In a video posted to her four million Instagram followers, she’s in shorts and a T-shirt as she helps pull a foal from its mother’s body in the dark of night, amniotic fluid gushing around her bare feet, her children watching nearby. They’d got the call after they’d gone to bed and she’d woken the family up to take part in what she calls one of the most incredible experiences of all their lives. “That’s what I love, it’s what I enjoy the most,” she explains. “Birthing a foal, that was a moment for me that I will never forget. And I would do it all the time but my husband would kill me because we have so many horses already!” (Pataky and husband Chris Hemsworth have a stable of around 15 horses at their property in Broken Head in northern NSW.) As a city child growing up in a Madrid apartment, living on a property surrounded by dogs, chickens and horses is a dream come true – an achievement, like her career as an actress, that Pataky puts down to her nature, a combination of stubborn determination and relentlessly sunny positive thinking. “I’m probably overpositive. I think it’s because my childhood wasn’t the happiest and you can either be sad about it and get stuck in it, like ‘Why did it happen to me?’, or you can try to make the best of it. And I decided in life that I just wanted to get the best of it. In any situation, I’m trying to always turn negative into positive and make things look better. But at the same time, I’m very passionate and I want things to be my way. I’m stubborn and I will make it happen.” The proof of the power of her positive thinking might be the fact that Hollywood has recently discovered Australia, specifically Byron Bay, as a relatively restriction-free location for film productions, giving Pataky’s career – which she’d stepped back from in order to stay close to her family – a surprising turn. “Before we had a family I’d

had a great life, I’d worked really hard, I did a lot of movies. Then [after the children were born] I decided to focus on them and leave my career on the side, to just do little things here and there and try to be happy with that, even though it was my passion and I loved what I did,” she explains. “It was hard in some moments, because you see the person you love doing what you’re so passionate about, you see them doing movies, and you wish you could too. But because of my family I didn’t want to shoot anywhere else and it was Chris’ moment – I just let him know that he could do what he had to do and we’ll follow.” Now, though, the opportunities are coming to her. Her latest role, in an unnamed feature film which starts filming in March, plays to yet another side of Pataky: #fitspo icon. She describes the role as “sort of female John McClane [from Die Hard], a cool, strong female role”, and if you were watching on social media through 2020 you would have noticed the impressive Linda Hamilton-esque changes to her body in preparation for the film. “There are so many great movies with strong roles for women now, which is amazing. It’s such a good thing to not only have movies where men are the hero but women too, to inspire little girls,” she says. “I have to be very physically strong, so it will be a good challenge for me.” Not that she would have embraced a COVID-bod even if the film hadn’t been on the cards; like Chris, she’s “obsessive” about fitness. “I exercise every time I have the opportunity, just for my head and mind. Every time I feel like I’m being lazy I get in some push-ups. When I’m walking with my friends on the beach I’m like ‘Why are we just walking? Why don’t we do lunges while we’re walking? Just a few! Ten!” Having a role to get uber-fit for has just given her passion a purpose, something she loves about her job. “One of the reasons I wanted to become an actress is because you can do so many things, become so many people. Why should I get just one profession when as an actress I get to be anything and I have to learn about it to get into the role? I can pretend to be a zookeeper, or get super strong for a role. Having a reason makes it that much easier.” Alongside movie star, wife, mother, equine doula and action hero, she is revelling in a new role at David Jones (see her alongside the rest of the new friends of David Jones on page 46). With this season at David Jones all about being In the Moment, Pataky muses on what being in the moment means for her. “For me, it’s my hobbies like horse riding, because I have to be in focus and I can’t be distracted. For Chris, it’s surfing. I think it’s a form of meditation, focusing on something that’s not the world and its problems. If you find that hobby that can take you from the world, it’s so special, it just nurtures your soul.” ¾

Amid the era of face masks and working from home, lipstick – once the go-to luxury during a recession – temporarily disappeared from view. THE BIG CHILL The mercury is waning but your skin doesn’t have to. This is the smart guide to better skin this winter.

116

JONES AUTUMN/ WINTER 2021

W

hen it’s cold outside, warm inside and humidity has left the building, your skin is usually the thing that suffers. And while a highfactor sunscreen is still the most essential tool in your arsenal for keeping it looking its best, winter’s typically lower UV index makes it prime time to treat your skin to some extra TLC. For a skincare routine that works harder, try these seasonal riffs and new product stars.

U BEAUTY The Super Smart Hydrator 50ml, $290.

NEED TO KNOW: PEPTIDES

If you’re chasing cherub-like cheeks and ‘bouncy’ skin this winter, consider adding peptides to your skincare mix. A supporting act to the building blocks of skin, peptides encourage youngerbehaving cells, to help plump, fi rm and soothe. For maximum efficacy (and more of a baby face by summer), peptides work best in pairs; coupled with hydrators in Napoleon Perdis’ serum and Emma Lewisham’s velvety cream, peptides replenish and illuminate dehydrated skin. U Beauty’s resurfacer keeps skin calm, bright and smooth, with peptides and a potent trio of retinol, AHA and vitamin C.

DO LESS

Dermatologist-strength formulations have made brighter, smoother skin even more attainable. But if you’re someone with an addictive personality, take note: you can have too much of a good thing. Overindulging in actives and exfoliators can disrupt skin’s natural moisture and microbiome-regulating powers, leaving it stressed and compromised (hello, redness, breakouts and bumps), especially in winter. To help skin find its calm, practise patience and adopt a gentle, pared-back routine. A cleansing oil such as Shu Uemura’s will wash away excess sebum, make-up and SPF without stripping moisture. Then lock in moisture and comfort skin with a weightless gel-cream moisturiser such as the uber-quenching hydrator from U Beauty. To restore irritated skin and plump fine lines overnight, La Mer’s fermented algae balm melts into skin to let good-for-skin bacteria flourish and rebuild your natural protective barrier.

Since all of that indoor heating tends to zap skin of its precious water levels, winter is the perfect time to rev up the richness of your moisturiser. But fine and sensitive skins need a gentle touch – dip into these comforting pots from Givenchy, Dior and Giorgio Armani to soften, smooth and replenish skin in one step. D AV I D J O N E S . C O M

M.A.C Fix+ 100ml, $39.

CLARINS Double Serum 50ml, $152.

DOUBLE-DOWN

For cooler mornings that are more slapdash than strictly self-care, streamline your vanity and enlist multitaskers and hybrid solutions to get the best out of your skin, quick-smart. Working to soften fine lines, calm irritation and even skin, Clarins’ bigger-than-ever dual-phase Double Serum keeps skin firm and radiant, no matter the season, while protecting against inflammation and dark spots with turmeric. For dewy skin and make-up that stays put, a moisturiser like La Mer’s Crème de la Mer (60ml, $470) hydrates skin with a velvet finish to smooth over pores and latch onto make-up, while M.A.C’s mist refreshes and quenches for glowing and juicy-looking skin long past lunch. 118

BEAUTY LA PRAIRIE Platinum Rare Haute-Rejuvenation Protocol 3 x 8ml, $2915.

SISLEY PARIS Phyto-Blanc La Mousse 125ml (launching soon), $180.

YSL Pure Shots Night Reboot Serum 30ml, $120.

TURN UP THE VOLUME

La Prairie’s latest, and most luxurious, skincare wonder works like intermittent fasting to get skin in shape. It’s a monthlong potent treatment, designed to be repeated four times over the course of a year, to recover skin from the ravages of time. It treats fi rmness, elasticity and volume of the skin with a super smart dual-phase formula. The result is a smoothed, tightened glowing complexion.

FROM THE TOP

EMMA LEWISHAM Skinreset Concentrated Pigmentation Serum 30ml, $140.

DERMALOGICA Neck Fit Contour Serum 50ml, $135.

The delicate stretch of skin between your face and your décolletage is often neglected, but forget to take care of your neck at your own peril. “The derma of the neck is thinner, which means less collagen production and greater sensitivity,” explains skin therapist Diandra Politano. A specialty formula that caters to this area, like Dermalogica’s Neck Fit Contour Serum, which lifts and fi rms in a lightweight, roll-on formula, gives the neck everything it needs. “Treat the neck as you would your eye area. Using your palms and fi ngers, sweep up towards the chin and massage for two-to-five minutes to stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage – the sides of the neck are the lymphatic gateway – then always sweep out towards your ears then return back down the neck to end,” Politano says.

BOUNCE BACK

Brightening speckled summer skin doesn’t have to be hard work – seek out antioxidant-rich cleansers, serums and moisturisers to add pigment-erasing power to your routine. To get a head start on smoother, clearer skin, YSL’s glycolic acid serum resets skin overnight, while Emma Lewisham’s plant stem cell and vitamin C serum works to minimise melanin and lift dark spots so skin looks fresh and new. To keep skin even and glowing, wash away pigment-inducing pollution with Sisley’s comforting foaming cream cleanser. It’s rich and creamy so won’t leave skin dry and is packed with potent antioxidants to make skin glow from the very fi rst step. ¾ D AV I D J O N E S . C O M

SECRET WOMEN’S BUSINESS EMMA LEWISHAM Illuminating Oil Cleanser 115ml, $70.

Emma Lewisham Lewisham created her clean beauty brand after she realised she couldn’t find the natural, sustainable, sciencebacked beauty products she wanted to use herself.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, JONES asks six brilliant (and local) bosses of beauty to muse on their own best secrets and most-loved product staples.

BUTT NAKED Coffee + Epsom Body Scrub 250g, $18.95.

WELLECO Super Elixir Greens Refillable Caddy 300g, $145.

BEAUTY PHILOSOPHY: Using 100 per cent clean beauty products gives me such a powerful sense of wellbeing from only putting natural and nourishing ingredients on my skin. I’m a minimalist at heart and think that true beauty is intelligence, kindness and empathy. PRODUCT MVP: I use Emma Lewisham Illuminating Oil Cleanser every day. I don’t think people place enough importance on cleansing. It lifts make-up, pollution and impurities from the skin and is a real antiageing powerhouse. THE ONE THAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD: The Skinreset Even Skin Tone

Serum was born out of my frustration at not being able to fi nd a clean, natural, efficacious solution for my hyperpigmentation. It’s the result of five years of research. KIT ESSENTIALS: WelleCo Super Elixir Greens and Butt Naked Coffee + Epsom Body Scrub. LOCAL FAVE: Antipodes Moisture Boost Lipstick in Dusky Sound Pink has been my go-to clean lipstick for five years. HOT TIP: If you believe in something, stand by it and don’t accept compromises. LUMIRA La Primavera Eau de Parfum 50ml, $135.

Almira Armstrong Her now-cult fragrance and candle business was inspired by the travel she did when she was a child. Now the chic vessels and dreamy scents adorn coffee tables, mantles and bedsides the world over. BEAUTY PHILOSOPHY: A minimalist routine, with simplified formulations that work. I keep my skin relatively make-up free but I don’t leave the house without mascara. And I wear SPF religiously. PRODUCT MVP: Lumira’s La Primavera Eau de Parfum – it’s a floral scent with woody base notes that add a little twist to your traditional florals.

LA MER Crème de la Mer 60ml, $470.

THE ONE THAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD: The Lumira Tuscan Fig

fragrance which is available in a candle (300g, $70) and perfume oil (10ml, $55). It evokes memories of my family holiday adventures and was the first scent I made. KIT ESSENTIALS: YSL Pure Shots Night Reboot Serum (30ml, $120), La Mer Crème de la Mer, Ultraceuticals SunActive SPF 50+ Face Cream (60ml, $52), YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara and Chanel Rouge Allure Lipstick ($58) in Pirate – the perfect bold red. YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara $60.

Amy Jean Linnehan When Linnehan launched her first brow bar at age 23, the idea of a dedicated browservice space was unique. She championed customised brows, expanded her empire across the country and has created products for better brows at home.

GIORGIO ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation, $105.

AMY JEAN BROWS Daily Brow Mask, $98.

FORMATIVE MEMORY: Growing up doing classical ballet meant I had my fi ngers in theatrical make-up from the age of six and I thoroughly enjoy the artistic process of applying it. PRODUCT MVP: My Daily Brow Mask stimulates growth and is blended with cold-pressed castor oil, making my brows and surrounding skin glossy and healthy. It’s a sleep-in treatment, so I feel productive while I’m sleeping! THE ONE THAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD: My fi rst pair of tweezers. They’re dual-ended, so two types in one device. I truly enjoyed the process of being innovative and taking risks, rather than delivering the same tweezers that you usually see.

KIT ESSENTIALS: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, La Prairie Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil (30ml, $520) and Hermès lipsticks – the texture and fi nish are exquisite. LOCAL FAVE: I always put Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm (15g, $18.95) on my 18-month-old son’s lips. And I use Rationale’s Essential Six. I’ve got two young children and now have make-up down to a five-minute look. PRODUCT MVP: I’m very loyal to my Essential Six routine. With a newborn and toddler in tow, time for a regular facial with a Rationale Skin Therapist is rare so I’ve become even more devoted to the 1 The Mask as a weekly treatment at home.

THE ONE THAT MAKES LONDON Wild Bluebell Cologne 100ml, $233. YOU MOST PROUD: The supernova at the moment is the new Rationale 3 Tinted Serum SPF50+ (available from 23 March). I know the years of research and development that have gone into this innovative formulation: a sheer, zinc-only sun protector with a beautiful feel for everyday use and layering under make-up. KIT ESSENTIALS: Oribe Serene Scalp Balancing Shampoo (250ml, $68) and Conditioner (200ml, $72), Weleda Skin Food Lip Balm (8ml, $12.95) for every day and Jo Malone London Wild Bluebell Cologne. LOCAL FAVE: Scents evoke a sense of memory and calm for me and I love Lumira candles. I like Sicilian Citrus in the office on days when I need a bit of energy – and maybe a little escapism! HOT TIP: Lead the way that is truthful to who you are. Kindness and resilience are vitally important.

JONES AUTUMN/ WINTER 2021

BEAUTY PHILOSOPHY: Beauty is an inside-out job and what you eat can have a profound impact on how you look and feel. I also love topical skin care. I make my own oil-based cleanser using a mix of essential oils and organic coconut oil and remove it with a muslin cloth. PRODUCT MVP: I start every day with The Beauty Chef Glow mixed into a glass of fi ltered water or blended into a smoothie. I passionately believe gut health can impact everything from our skin to our physical health to our happiness. THE ONE THAT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD: The fi rst-ever Glow powder was made in my kitchen in Bondi more than 10 years ago but we’re always looking to innovate, working with our team of microbiologists, naturopaths and nutritionists. Glow is now in its third iteration. KIT ESSENTIALS: Any of our Inner Beauty Boosts, depending on what my skin needs that day but it’s often Collagen, which is packed with bio-fermented ingredients to support the look of glowing skin. LOCAL FAVE: Jurlique’s Nutri-Defi ne Supreme Rejuvenating Serum is something I’ve recently integrated into my routine and have so far loved the dewy feel of my skin. HOT TIP: Don’t be backwards in coming forwards and always ask questions. And look after and nourish your body, especially your gut, as it regulates your immune system, skin, brain and metabolic health. And remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. ¾

“The issue of recycling what we toss is, in fact, not as simple as it seems.”

A WORDS LAURA AGNEW STILL-LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY EDWARD URRUTIA *INSTORE MARCH 21.

CLOSING THE LOOP

David Jones is partnering with recycling disrupters TerraCycle to help you give your beauty packaging a new life.

MORE GOOD THINGS HAPPENING IN THE BEAUTY DEPARTMENT...

Our kerbside recycling system allows us to recycle clean simple materials such as paper, cardboard, aluminium and PET bottles. However, beauty products are often packaged in ways to support our customers’ experience with them. This could mean the inclusion of rubber seals to maintain the product’s performance or the relevant pumps to ensure the product is dispensed correctly. The use of different materials like these can typically result in our beauty packaging being non-recyclable, relegating it to landfi ll. But there is hope. A privately owned and operated recycling service, TerraCycle takes those headache-inducing containers and turns them into shiny new things, and David Jones has just partnered with them to bring you BeautyCycle. Launching on Earth Day, April 22, you’ll fi nd a drop-off point in every David Jones beauty department across the country. Simply take your beauty empties – regardless of what they are and where you bought them – into the store and drop them into the BeautyCycle bin. Soon, they’ll be on their way to TerraCycle where each piece can be sorted and properly recycled. It’s a loweffort, high-impact move towards creating a beauty industry that thinks full circle. And like your nightly skincare ritual, it’s an act guaranteed to make you feel good. ¾

chieving a more mindful and lower impact lifestyle relies on accessible solutions to environmental issues. From reusable coffee cups and water bottles to bulk food stores and a transition away from single use plastics, we’ve managed to remove plenty of unnecessary waste from daily life. And the more we learn, the more discerning we become of what we buy and the brands we choose to support. And, although we’re more critical of our purchases in the lead-up to making them, it’s equally important to consider what happens when it comes time to throw them away. We’ve got composting veggie scraps and re-using post satchels down pat because they’re not much harder than lifting the bin lid (and we’ve had a handle on that since preschool). But the issue of recycling what we toss is, in fact, not as simple as it seems.

CLOSE TO HOME

From sleek city stays and wineries producing some of the country’s top drops to one-of-a-kind experiences in nature, Victoria is bouncing back from a tough year with trademark panache and a slew of new openings – and there are plenty of undiscovered joys to be had across the state. Words by ELLE MCCLURE

THE WINERY OUTPOST The latest in a string of chic winery-adjacent stays (think the Mitchelton Hotel in Nagambie and the Lancemore Lindenderry in Red Hill), the Polperro Farmhouse is a quietly stylish new addition from the folks behind its namesake vineyard in Red Hill. Like Mitchelton and Lindenderry, the property was designed by award-winning interior design firm Hecker Guthrie; the revamp of a mid-century farmhouse resulting in a stylish threebedroom stay that you and your gang will be plenty comfortable in. After a day spent exploring the region’s cellar doors, retreat back to your abode and its outdoor kitchen-meets-entertaining area for a meal you won’t soon forget.

THE ECO ADVENTURE Only recently completed, the Grampians Peaks Trail is a 13-day hike through the picturesque mountain range, about a three-hour drive west of Melbourne. Even the most experienced hikers will be awestruck by the dramatic cliff faces and impressive views on offer along the 160-kilometre route, as well as the rare insight into the Indigenous heritage of the area, known as Gariwerd. If your limited skill set means the full pilgrimage isn’t quite for you, a 36-kilometre track that takes three days and two nights might be more your speed. Either way, off-grid cabin-slash-tiny house Elliott is the perfect place to rest any aching muscles. You can find it near the town of Pomonal, a 15-minute drive from the trail’s start (and end) point of Halls Gap.

THE CITY STAY Set to quickly cement its position as the city’s buzziest new hotspot, the W Melbourne hotel is just one of the exciting new hotel offerings we’re being treated to this year after the inevitable delay of its December opening (so if COVID-19 messed with your 2020 plans, the W can relate). With 294 rooms and suites – the pick being the Extreme Wow Suite with a balcony overlooking the Yarra – the walls of the W are filled with subtle nods to Melbourne’s history and inimitable culture. While the hotel has five in-house restaurants and bars, the spot to beeline for is the guestsonly pool, Wet, complete with a gold roof, an adjacent bar and a rotation of DJs to ensure the good vibes don’t end. And with its secret laneway entrance and plunging spiral staircase, a cocktail at the W’s signature bar, Curious, might be the only tipple that’s more quintessentially Melbourne than a spilled beer at the footy. THE WELLNESS FIX Perhaps the only thing more relaxing than plunging into the geothermal waters of the Mornington’s Peninsula Hot Springs is knowing that your napping quarters aren’t far away. Already beloved for the pools set around its natural mineral springs, which range from ice-cold and tepid to positively balmy, the much-flocked-to spot has now added 10 glamping-style tents – albeit ones with heated floors and linen on the beds. After an indulgent massage or bath by moonlight, retreat to your room where the only things to disturb you are the bird calls when it comes time for morning yoga.

THE ROADTRIP WORTH MAKING Make some ground with a drive up to the beautiful northern border town of Yarrawonga, and a stay at the region’s exciting new opening, the Sebel, overlooking peaceful Lake Mulwala. While water activities abound, the real drawcard here is the adjacent golf course, Black Bull – designed by former professional golfer Peter Thomson – but if you don’t have a water hobby or swing of your own, relax on a daybed by the pool or sip a sundowner on the deck. The holistic Sol Wellness Centre will take care of tired roadtrip legs, while dining is at Elizabeth’s – helmed by chef Logan Campbell of the celebrated Jonah’s on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. You can even tour before your stay and stream the Spotify playlist they’ve created for the road.

Rolls-Royce Ghost IF ENLIGHTENMENT WERE A CAR, THIS IS IT.

If most super luxury cars are like a bejewelled Gucci evening bag, designed to draw maximum eyeballs and instant status to the wearer, the new Rolls-Royce Ghost is more like a Bottega Veneta clutch: thoughtfully designed, exquisitely made, and emanating luxury without ever screaming it. The new Ghost has been designed to appeal to the person who is drawn to minimalism and effortlessness in design; a movement the company is calling ‘post-opulence’ – but that doesn’t mean the car is any less luxe.

WORD OF THE DAY: JAPANDI

The perfect complement to its famously smooth ‘magic carpet ride’, all interior components are tuned to a specific sound frequency that gives you the most transcendent commute imaginable. The doors open and close for you at the push of a button, making you feel as if an invisible chauffeur is perpetually at your service. Then there’s the inimitably chic styling details, an interior illuminated with hundreds of tiny, ethereal stars which dim and glow whether the car is idle or on the move, plus a clever, secret spot which holds an umbrella colour matched to the car interior and a place to chill your champagne (should you be so inclined). It may be dubbed a ‘Ghost’ but this car is still going to draw a hell of a lot of eyeballs. And that’s before you’ve even considered it’s the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce to date, with features that embrace the very best of safety, visibility, control and connectivity.

A fusion of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics, this design movement brings nature, art and functionality together in a most pleasing way using wood, plant life and minimal but ultra-cosy homewares. We can’t think of a more soothing trend to fill our Instagram feeds. 142

ENTERTAINING

Green eggs and ham

We do like green eggs and ham – and think you will too with this Dr Seuss-inspired dish, paired with buttery toast soldiers. The green sauce is great on sandwiches, burgers or with grilled meat and fish, so make double (it’ll keep in the fridge for several days). 1 garlic clove ⅓ cup David Jones Extra Virgin Olive Oil

8 free-range eggs 1 cup pouring cream Splash of David Jones Extra Virgin Olive Oil 30g diced butter Crumbled feta, baby spinach and coriander sprigs, to serve 100g David Jones Sliced Australian Prosciutto, to serve Lime wedges and buttery toast, to serve Green sauce ½ cup firmly packed baby spinach ½ cup firmly packed coriander leaves 2 spring onions, coarsely chopped 2 pickled chilies, coarsely chopped ½ long green chill, coarsely chopped, or to taste

1 For sauce, combine ingredients in a blender, season to taste and blend until smooth, set aside. 2 Whisk eggs and cream in a bowl to combine, season to taste. 3 Heat oil and butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat until butter melts, add egg mixture and cook, stirring occasionally as egg starts to set, until softly scrambled – remove from heat just before the eggs are cooked to your liking as the eggs will continue to cook with residual heat. Add half the green sauce and fold to marble through the egg mixture. Divide among serving plates, scatter with feta, spinach and coriander, and serve hot with prosciutto, lime wedges and buttery toast soldiers.

Sausage and egg pizza

Nothing signals a fun day ahead like tucking into pizza for breakfast. This one’s a lighter take on an old favourite, and you can make the pizza dough the night before. PREP TIME: 25 MINS COOK TIME: 20 MINS (PLUS PROVING) SERVES 4 1 cup David Jones Passata 1 tbsp David Jones Extra Virgin Olive Oil, plus extra to serve 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 tsp finely chopped thyme, plus extra thyme sprigs to serve 1½ cups David Jones Chopped Kale 2 Peter Bouchier Pork Sausages, squeezed out of their skins and crumbled into chunks 2 buffalo mozzarella, drained and sliced 60m Parmigiano Reggiano, finely grated 4 free-range eggs Pizza dough 2 ⅔ cups (400g) strong flour 15g dried yeast (about 2 sachets) 2 tbsp David Jones Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 For pizza dough, combine flour, yeast and 1½ tsp sea salt in the bowl of an electric mixer and mix to combine. Mixing on medium speed, add 1 cup water, then oil and knead until smooth and elastic (6-8 minutes). Transfer to a large, lightly oiled bowl, brush with oil, cover with a tea towel and stand in a warm place for 2 hours or until doubled in size. Alternatively, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to prove. 2 Preheat oven to 240C or the highest setting. Knock back dough on a lightly floured surface, divide into four even pieces and roll into balls. Place on a floured tray for 20 minutes to prove. 3 Meanwhile, combine passata, oil, garlic and thyme in a bowl, season. 4 Working with one dough ball at a time, roll out to a rough 25cm round. Spread with ¼ cup passata mixture and scatter over ¼ of the kale and ¼ of the sausage. Top with ¼ of the mozzarella and ¼ of the parmesan. Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper, crack an egg into the centre, season and repeat with remaining dough balls. 5 Bake pizzas in batches for 8 minutes until golden brown and egg is cooked to your liking (if you prefer a firmer yolk, cook for another minute or two). Serve hot scattered with extra thyme and drizzled with extra olive oil.

Louise Olsen A gifted painter and creator of homewares label Dinosaur Designs, Louise’s home is filled with sculptural objects. “It’s so important to fall in love with every piece you buy.”

Otis Hope Carey “My work is intuitive,” says the Indigenous surfer turned artist living on the NSW North Coast. He uses subtle layering to create works rich in both texture and meaning.

This Exclusively Yours icon is also featured throughout this issue and indicates that the product is available at no other department store.

Colour

Have you always been creative? Yes, indeed I have been. I always took great care in the way I would position things in my room, the colours I wanted to occupy it. I was forever drawing, cutting out little pictures and creating collages, collecting and pressing flowers, and looking to nature for inspiration. I had a very active imagination and I loved to draw the places I visited. Accompanying Mum to galleries, the theatre and ballet was an entry to a magical world.

with Miranda Skoczek

The abstract painter and selfdescribed ‘colourist’ has a knack for engaging the viewer through colour to bring a special joy.

When it comes to your creative process, at what stage does colour come in? The birth of a new work happens so automatically – I’ve never planned a painting. I can literally start a new painting with the excess paint of a work that sits beside it, or from cleaning brushes off onto the canvas. The first laid colour informs the next colour to be used, and so on and so on. I have a theoretical understanding of colour, but I also employ its use decoratively.

JONES AUTUMN/ WINTER 2021

What colours do you like to surround yourself with in the home? Every colour of the rainbow and beyond! I do start with a somewhat neutral palette – with a grey sofa and ideally white walls – and then it’s a rather carnivalesque look on top. Art covers every inch of my walls. Pink and all of its manifestations speak to me the most. I find it so joyous and uplifting, and am forever painting with it.

Shape with Louise Olsen

One half of beloved Australian brand Dinosaur Designs, art is a constant for Louise and takes many forms in her home. How was a creative streak encouraged in you as a child? Both my parents were artists and were very encouraging of my creativity. Our home was like a studio; there were always drawing and painting materials available. Where do you most find inspiration for your work with Dinosaur Designs? I’m constantly inspired by nature; it never fails to amaze and surprise. You’re a sculptor and a painter. How do those practices complement your work with Dinosaur Designs? I come from an art school background, and Stephen [Ormandy, the other half of Dinosaur Designs] and I look at each piece like a little artwork. We use the same kind of philosophy for shape and form for those pieces as we would in creating a sculpture for an exhibition. We think it gives an everyday piece a life and beauty beyond simply being an object. 14

Texture with Otis Hope Carey

Surfer and artist, Otis utilises his artistic sensibilities to funnel spiritual significance into large-scale masterpieces.

What drives you to keep creating? Growing up in a big Indigenous family, family’s always first and foremost. So for me it’s always about making my family proud and leaving a legacy that my children can be proud of and share with others. How does texture play into your work? When I’m painting, what I try to achieve is visual texture. I lay down a backdrop colour, then I start to work on the layers and linework. The dots come last, and then I work on the layered lines again. My work looks as though when you touch it, it might have a lot of texture, but really it’s quite flat ... because when I paint, I try to visualise and bring to life a spiritual connection, or mimic certain songs or stories – so there’s a lot of depth to the ideas and the work. What inspires you? I love being able to paint at home. A lot of the time I’ll let the kids come in and watch me paint. They’re so in tune with their culture already. 24
