It’s where you’ve carried out rites of passage such as buying your first box of tampons with your mum, picking out the perfect shade of nail polish for your wedding day and

Over the past 40 years, Priceline has undergone various face lifts to reflect the changing times, but its commitment to helping Australians live their healthiest and most fulfilling lives has never wavered. Here, we revisit some of the brand’s key milestones and celebrate the people who have moulded Priceline into the company it is today – including YOU.

For 40 years Priceline has grown up alongside Australian women, evolving to meet their ever-changing needs in health, wellness and beauty

discovering box dyes when your greys

Where it all began

Priceline was founded in 1982 by New Clicks – a group of healthcare retail chains – primarily serving as a beauty retailer. The first Priceline store was opened in Highpoint, Victoria, and quickly became the city’s go-to destination for beauty and wellness essentials. Priceline expanded rapidly in its early years, with stores opening up in both city and regional areas around the country. After working in overseas pharmacies for many years, forward-thinking Pharmacist Andrew Rewell returned home to Victoria in 1988 and, full of inspiration, bought his father’s Pakenham Pharmacy. Alongside junior business partners Jeff Thom and Karen Dougall (who still work in the Pakenham Pharmacy today), Rewell soon saw greater potential for his small company and decided to partner with New Clicks to leverage Priceline’s retailing expertise into a pharmacy model. Throughout the 2000s, Priceline Pharmacy boomed and became widely recognised as a reputable destination for health, wellness and beauty needs.

Look and feel

While it’s difficult to imagine Priceline without its iconic magenta facade, the brand has sported a few striking looks in its 40-year history. When Priceline was launched in 1982, the store was known for its red text logo. As the brand grew and began to move into the pharmacy space, it adopted a modern red, white and black look with a sleek new font. Then, in 2008, Priceline underwent a significant rebrand: the stores got a serious makeover and adopted the trademark pink colour scheme that we associate with the brand today. To coincide with the changing store looks, the Priceline staff uniforms also evolved over the years. From white knee-length dresses with Priceline-branded ties to blue tunic dresses, vivid red vests and the chic black-and-pink ensembles the teams wear now, staff outfits have always been of-the-era.

Now we’re here Priceline store opening in Adelaide’s Myer Centre, 1991.

In 2022, after 40 years of growth, Priceline is exceptionally proud of all its achievements. The brand’s continuing success can be attributed to its incredible staff and customers who have allowed the company to thrive throughout generations. Priceline currently employs over 7000 people and has 470 stores across the country. Since launching the Priceline Sisterhood Foundation in 2011, over $8.65 million has been raised for its charity partners, including PANDA, Motherless Daughters Australia, Raise Foundation and Dementia Australia. The Priceline Sister Club has 7.5 million members, making it Australia’s largest health and beauty loyalty program, and it has an incredible line-up of brand ambassadors, including the vivacious media personality Chrissie Swan and the iconic Ita Buttrose. “Over 40 years, our customers have grown and we’ve grown with them,” says Priceline General Manager Andrew Vidler. “Our stores are the place customers come to have their spirits lifted, to receive real, classic care, and to be acknowledged and appreciated for simply being them.” priceline.com.au 9

People of Priceline

The Hopes:

Three generations strong

No matter the uniform they wear, the people of Priceline have always been the brand’s defining factor.

A decade of bestsellers

When Audrey Hope was born in 2005, her dad, Priceline Glenorchy Franchise Partner Geoff Hope, never imagined she’d end up the third generation of his family to work in their Priceline store. Audrey’s first shift as a Pharmacy Assistant was “a very ‘proud dad’ moment for me”, says Geoff. Having inherited the store from his Pharmacist mother Elizabeth, who bought the pharmacy over 35 years ago, Geoff considers his work a family affair. “I thought I couldn’t be prouder of the team but watching everyone thrive this year, and now with Audrey here, I am!”

They’ve witnessed changes aplenty and, notably, a gradual shift from a male-dominated workplace to one where there are more women. “Back then, our Managers, Assistant Managers and Trainee Managers were always male. Now they’re all female,” says Nancy. Although many processes have changed (the sisters much prefer scanning barcodes to entering PLU numbers manually), they note that Priceline’s customer service practices are the same now as they were back then. “We have always greeted everybody,” says Doris. “It’s really important.”

fabulous Priceline Ambassadors* Chrissie Swan and Ita Buttrose share how beauty, health and wellness have shaped their lives from 1982 to now

Chrissie Swan embraces an ‘80s style moment.

I gain inspiration from women who show independence, thoughtfulness and an abundance of self-care. WHO INSPIRED YOUR CAREER PATH? I’ve always loved Ita Buttrose, Amanda Keller, Dee Dee Dunleavy, Lisa Wilkinson, Yumi Stynes and Clare Bowditch… the list goes on. WHAT ARE YOUR ’80s BEAUTY MEMORIES? Mum ran nightclubs in the ’80s and had the most gorgeous clothes. She also had an absolute ripper of a perm.

WHAT’S ONE RETRO-INSPIRED TREND YOU’D NEVER TRY AGAIN? Probably thin eyebrows. WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT SKINCARE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNT? Get a good cleanser and moisturiser. Don’t mess with your skin too much. And drink water.

C

hrissie Swan is all about realistic health and beauty, striking the right balance between the two. While the beauty trends of previous decades were fun, the TV/radio presenter is far more excited about the diversity on offer in Priceline stores today.

PRICELINE: WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING A WOMAN IN RADIO IN THE EARLY 2000s? HOW DOES IT COMPARE IN 2022? CHRISSIE SWAN: I’ve been lucky in that I’ve largely been allowed to run my own race in my career. There have been a few instances where my role as employee and mother have not been properly understood but I feel that’s changing. Perhaps because I’m older and better at communicating my needs. I think I joined the industry when it had started to change for women from just acting in supporting roles to being the main content giver.

WHO WERE YOUR STYLE ICONS GROWING UP? Sadly the ’80s and ’90s were all about supermodels and unattainable beauty. It was tough growing up knowing there was a level of beauty I could never attain. These days 16 YOU 40th anniversary issue

s Founding Editor of Cleo magazine, media veteran Ita Buttrose addressed all aspects of a woman’s life with equal importance and accessibility, from the ins and outs of a healthy sex life to climbing the career ladder (and, of course, the best shape for your brows). Who better than Ita to pass on lessons learnt about health, wellness and beauty.

PRICELINE: WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES AS FOUNDING EDITOR OF CLEO MAGAZINE? ITA BUTTROSE: Cleo enabled women to talk without embarrassment about their ambitions, emotions, desires, bodies, health and sex. We encouraged women to read about and discuss what they wanted out of life. Cleo wrote about sex as though the magazine had discovered it.

AS THE FIRST WOMAN APPOINTED EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF THE DAILY AND SUNDAY TELEGRAPHS, WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE? Overcoming the common belief that editing newspapers was a man’s job. What would a woman know about editing newspapers? I didn’t go along with that kind of old-fashioned thinking. They were wrong and I intended to prove it to them.

WHAT THREE WORDS DEFINE ’80s BEAUTY FOR YOU? Big, bold, confident. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Don’t take your health and wellness for granted. Watch what you eat, do some type of regular exercise and don’t short-change yourself on getting enough sleep.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT SKINCARE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNT? To always wear sunblock on my face, neck and hands. Every. Single. Day.

Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Re-apply frequently. It is important to wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear when exposed to the sun. “I use this every day before I apply my foundation.” Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ 85mL, $14.99.

ARE THERE ANY KEY MOMENTS YOU CAN SHARE ABOUT YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH PRICELINE? As Patron of the Priceline Sisterhood Foundation, I’ve visited many Priceline Pharmacy stores across Australia. 2022: SMOKING KILLS

with the old

Guess what? Turns out a lot of the iconic health, wellness and beauty advice we were fed in the ’80s doesn’t stack up today

W

hile the ’80s introduced us to many wonderful cultural icons (Wham!, Ghostbusters and the Walkman, anyone?), it also left us with some questionable pearls of wisdom. Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-miski and Beauty Advisor Gloria Perez weigh in on some of the most common myths spruiked at the time, and then reframe them for 2022.

18 YOU 40th anniversary issue

NANCY EL-MISKI Priceline Pharmacist

1982: SMOKING HAS HEALTH BENEFITS

If you didn’t smoke cigarettes in the ’80s, chances are you stuck out like a sore thumb in social situations. Believe it or not, Priceline actually used to stock them. While that seems completely absurd now, the ’80s still held some old myths around smoking from the days when it was thought to have health benefits (crazy, right?). From weight loss to stress relief, falsehoods around the supposed ‘benefits’ of smoking were common up until the mid-’80s when anti-smoking messages began to emerge. 1

Attitudes towards smoking have evolved dramatically over the past 40 years as we continue to learn about the myriad health issues caused by cigarettes. Despite this, according to the Cancer Council, around 24,000 Australians die each year from smoking-related illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, stomach ulcers and various types of cancer, proving that we still have a long way to go. One of the major myths that experts have discredited is that smoking helps to reduce stress levels – we now know that the habit can actually increase feelings of anxiety and tension over time. “Nicotine creates an immediate sense of relaxation so people who smoke may believe it reduces stress and anxiety,” says Nancy. “To break the habit, adopt appropriate forms of stress relief such as taking a walk, having a hot shower or meditating.” We can also agree that the age-old excuse “it’s OK to be a social smoker” has no legs (surprised?). “There’s no healthy level of smoking,” says Nancy. “Every cigarette does damage to your body and you’re risking developing a dangerous habit.” The good news is, it’s never too late to quit; the benefits begin the moment you give smokes the flick. “Your heart rate reduces within 20 minutes, the carbon monoxide in your blood drops in less than a day and in a year’s time your risk of heart disease will be halved,” says Nancy.

FOR A HEALTHY TAN

In 1980s Australia, summertime was all about getting a ‘healthy’ bronzed glow. One of the most common ways to achieve said glow was to lather up with oil and bake in the sun for a few hours (the coconutty scent of tanning oil still takes us back). Oils contained little to no SPF, and we were encouraged to reapply them regularly throughout the day for an even summer tan.

Thankfully, conversations around tanning and sun protection have done a full 180 since the 1980s. “There’s no such thing as a healthy tan. Even if you’re wearing SPF, any form of tanning or sun exposure is bad for your skin,” says Nancy. “The increased UV exposure through tanning causes collagen breakdown, increased wrinkling, sun spots and thinning of the skin.” The best way to achieve a summer tan? Fake it. There are a multitude of self-tanning products on the market for all skin types and tones – many of them actually work doubletime by hydrating your skin as they bronze. But it’s important to remember that most fake tanning products do not offer sun protection so you must still apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you’re outdoors. “Make sure you’re wearing a high-SPF sunscreen every day and reapply every two hours,” says Nancy. “The Quick Flick’s Finishing Spray can even be used over makeup.” Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Re-apply frequently. It is important to wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear when exposed to the sun.

1982: FAD DIETS WILL HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT

Made famous by our favourite celebs, these eating plans defined an era of weight loss trends. “These ‘diets’ may provide short-term results but are hard to sustain and, ultimately, deprive you of the essential nutrients only balanced eating can offer,” says Nancy. They may, however, give you a good laugh.

The Grapefruit Diet: The ‘Hollywood diet’ involved eating a grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice with every meal, based on the myth that it helps burn fat (spoiler alert: it doesn’t).

The Cabbage Soup Diet: This diet involved consuming plain old cabbage soup two to three times a day – and the stricter you were with the diet, the better the results you got. Needless to say, any ‘results’ were shown to be very short-lived.

The Cottage Cheese Diet: Rapid weight loss was promised if you ate nothing but cottage cheese for three days. Turns out all the diet achieved was putting you off cottage cheese for life.

We now know that balance is the key to getting to and maintaining a healthy weight. “Weight loss is a lifestyle change starting with healthy eating, an active lifestyle, good-quality sleep and a positive mental state,” says Nancy. “Do your research before jumping into any exercise or healthy eating plan, and speak to a professional such as a Pharmacist, Dietitian, Exercise Physiologist, Psychologist or GP.” priceline.com.au 19

SNACKS ARE HEALTHY

‘Healthy’ snacks exploded onto the market in the 1980s and transformed the way we ate with their ‘low-fat’ claims. Turns out muesli bars, fat-free yoghurts and fruit juices aren’t as healthy as we once thought (perhaps that’s why they tasted so good). The common factor? Bucketloads of sugar. Today, we’re wiser about the treats we eat – and even how we eat them.

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t get excited as kids when our mums gave us flat lemonade to treat bouts of gastro. However, you may be surprised (or disappointed) to learn it might have done more harm than good. “Drinking flat lemonade isn’t the best thing for dehydration – it can actually make it worse,” says Nancy. “Due to its high sugar content, lemonade draws water out of the body, worsening dehydration.” These days, it’s best to treat dehydration with oral rehydration fluids, which replenish your body’s salt and fluid levels. These are also available as ice blocks – perfect for little ones. Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides 284g, $39.99. Consume as part of a healthy balanced diet containing a variety of food.

Want to up the health benefits of your favourite in-between food? Add supplement powders. “The health benefits of incorporating them into our daily wellness routines can include weight management, muscle growth, added nutrients and quick recovery after exercise,” says Nancy. “Powders have a naturally higher absorption rate and higher bioavailability of nutrients.” It’s a good idea to talk to your local Priceline Pharmacist or a GP before trying a new supplement so they can help you find the best one for your concerns. “I use a supplement powder containing magnesium as it helps my muscles relax after a long day of working on my feet,” says Nancy. Y T U BEA THEN NOW : X I F GLORIA PEREZ Priceline Beauty Advisor

When you think of ’80s beauty and skincare trends, what comes to mind? Perhaps a David Bowie-esque mullet paired with budgie-blue eyeshadow and a generous amount of red blush? Or a harsh facial exfoliator that always left your skin feeling red raw? Whatever image comes to mind, it’s safe to say that ’80s beauty and skincare trends were iconic (and clearly unforgettable). Gloria Perez breaks down some of the most popular skincare, makeup, fragrance and hair trends from the era and suggests how we can adapt them for 2022. While our children will forever cherish the photos of our bold hair and makeup looks from the ’80s, we can’t help but wish we’d been let in on this expert advice at the time.

1. PERMED HAIR

Bring out natural curls with a good mousse or curl cream for a much healthier way to achieve voluminous locks (your hair will thank you for it).

2. OVERPOWERING PERFUME

Less is more. Stick to subtle fragrances and apply them sparingly (just because you’ve become used to the scent doesn’t mean other people can’t smell it).

3. HARSH FACE MASKS

Opt for hydrating sheet masks that are gentler on your skin and don’t require any pulling or tugging.

4. CUCUMBER ON EYES

While this is still a great way to reduce puffiness and hydrate the under eye area, we’ve now got improved creams that soothe and diminish dark circles.

5. ABRASIVE PHYSICAL EXFOLIANTS

Heavy-duty physical exfoliants can cause micro-tears in the skin. Chemical exfoliants such as AHAs and BHAs gently get rid of dead skin without damaging the surface layer.

6. USING TOOTHPASTE TO DRY OUT BLEMISHES

A total myth. Toothpaste can be very harsh on skin, especially when it’s already been aggravated by acne or pimples. Use gentler products that will break the cycle of the zit, such as Nexcare pimple covers.

7. CHEMICAL CLEANSERS

Now that we’ve discovered the joy of natural skincare products, we’re choosing cleansers that are gentler on our skin and the planet.

8. LIP MOISTURISING

One of the best skincare trends to come out of the ’80s, it softens the delicate skin on your lips and protects them from environmental factors such as windburn.

1. Cake The Curl Whip Whipped Curl Mousse 250mL, $21.99.

2. Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Neon Eau de Parfum Spray 100mL, $110.

3. Essano Vitamin C Brightening Biodegradable Sheet Mask 23mL, $5.99.

4. Thin Lizzy Puffy Eye Remover Microcream 25mL, $99.99. 5. Q+A Apple AHA Exfoliating Gel 75mL, $17.

6. Nexcare Acne Absorbing Covers Assorted 36 Pack, $9.99. Always read the instructions for use. Follow the instructions for use. 7. Sukin Signature Foaming Cleanser 125mL, $11.99. 8. Barry M Lip Rehab Nourishing Lip Mask 9mL, $12.95.

’80s beauty is back T

(and it’s better than you remember)

his decade’s not exactly known for low-key beauty looks. Most of its greatest hits (see: powdery foundation, heavy contour and frosted eyeshadow) are worlds away from today’s no-makeup makeup. That said, the ‘80s did deliver on glamour and fun, and just as we’re embracing scrunchies, tapered jeans and puff sleeves again, ‘80s beauty is back in a big way. Worried you’ll end up looking like an extra from a Desperately Seeking Susan reboot? Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw schools us on how to make iconic ’80s beauty trends feel fresh for 2022.

Australis Lipliner Pencil in Teddy, $9.95.

“The ’80s was an era of maximalist beauty, which translated as striking lips – often pale pink, fuchsia or bright red – worn with a full face of makeup,” says Sarah. For a modern take, choose a standout lip colour in a glossy texture and team with pared-back dewy skin. Prefer a matte finish? Line lips with a flesh-toned lip liner first for a look that feels fresh. To avoid creating a Cyndi Lauper vibe, steer clear of shimmery formulas. Neon

Ultra-bright colours characterised the 1980s, with fluoro one of the top themes of the decade. The era’s style philosophy was all about standing out, and neon graced everything from clothing and hair accessories to makeup. Electric eyeshadow and nail polish were particularly huge, with acid green, highlighter yellow, safety orange and punchy pink manicures all the rage. For a 21st century remix, line just your upper or lower eyelids with a neon hue, and choose an opaque, shimmer-free neon polish for your nails.

Revlon Powder Blush in Tickled Pink, $26.95.

26 YOU 40th anniversary issue

A key element of ’80s makeup, bold blush – often worn in shades of pink or plum – was everywhere. Today’s advice is to apply blush to the apples of your cheeks; back then it was worn in a high, angled ‘stripe’. “This old-school contouring technique is called blush draping,” says Sarah, “and when done correctly, it can have a beautiful sculpting effect.” To bring it into the now, use a tapered blush brush to lightly sweep powder, or a finger or makeup sponge to apply cream blush, at the top of your cheekbones, blending well up to the temples.

Revolution Eye Bright Concealer in Medium, $16.

Luma Just a Touch Lip & Cheek Tint in Signorita, $29.95.

Barry M Clickable Eyeshadow in Intrigued, $5.

Glam by Manicare Hydro Lash 80.Hailey 1 Pair, $12.99.

Savvy by DB Kohl Eyeliner in Forest, $4.99.

The trend:

Vibrant eyes Kiss Magnetic Lash/Liner Kit, $29.99.

NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Shadow Palette in Brights, $37.95.

“Super-bright eyeshadow was a 1980s staple – think Grace Jones’ iconic purple lids,” says Sarah. Back then, eyeshadow trios were big news, and shadow was typically worn from the lashes up to the brow bone and layered with liner. For a contemporary take, choose a single shade (like cobalt, fuchsia or tangerine) and apply with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. “Keep the colour just on lids and buff it really well – you’ll be left with a soft wash of colour.” Not keen on all that blending? Try a streak of punchy liner or a coloured mascara instead. priceline.com.au 27

One ’80s beauty trend that won’t be back? Overly pale skin. “The foundations and powders in those days caused flashback when photographed,” says Sarah. “Thankfully, today’s formulas are a lot more sophisticated.” For help finding a foundation that perfectly suits your skin tone, see a Beauty Advisor in store. Max Factor False Lash Effect XXL Mascara, $27.95.

KEEN TO EMBRACE ’80s BEAUTY IN FULL FORCE? Try on a classic colour combo: blue shadow, coral blush and fuchsia lipstick. “To make it modern, swap full-coverage foundation for a glowy tint, blend everything really well and opt for a matte lip,” says Sarah.

Maybelline Fit Me Tinted Moisturizer 30mL, $19.95.

L’Oréal Paris True Match Blush in Rosy Cheeks, $25.95. Revolution Forever Dynamic Eyeshadow Palette Animal Magic, $12.

Fluffy brows

An ’80s beauty trend that’s back in a big way is naturally full and fluffy brows. Then, Brooke Shields was the undisputed queen of brows. Now? There’s plenty of celebrity inspiration, from Lily Collins to Sofia Vergara. “The new bold brow is less polished, which is great news for makeup novices,” says Sarah. Fill in patchy areas with a soft pencil or brow powder, then comb through with a spoolie brush. To set, swipe on a tinted brow gel. “Wipe off any excess product, then swipe upwards for a fuller look.” 1. Rimmel London Brow this Way Powder Kit, $12.95. 2. Natural hair is making a comeback and we’re into it in a BIG way

Big hair, don’t care. Of all the

‘80s trends showing up in our feeds again, we’re happiest to welcome back this one. But where it used to be all about the crimp, frizz, fluff and tease of heat styling and tool damage, this trend revival is all about keeping it low maintenance. Put down the crimper; it’s time to embrace natural hair. “I am a big fan of embracing your natural hair,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Kat Ramfos. “It’s individual to you and less time consuming – think of how much time is spent blow-waving and straightening, not to mention the hours spent in the chair colouring. With the right hair products you can make ANY hair type look great.” Now, in this magical space between salty summer strands and winter beanies, is the perfect time to figure out what your natural locks love best.

Chill out

We get it – the blow dryer is a girl’s best friend during cooler weather. But it has its downsides. “Heat styling fries the hair’s outer layer – the cuticle,” says Kat. “When that’s damaged, hair loses elasticity and feels dry and brittle, leading to split ends, breakage and frizz.” And while big is back, frizz can stay in the ‘80s. To minimise damage, shampoo less often to allow your natural oils to work through your hair and use a dry shampoo between washes. And remember, hair is more prone to breakage when wet. “Never use a brush,” says Kat. “Use a widetooth comb to detangle and dry your hair off with a microfibre towel instead of a normal bath towel.” 1. Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk 150mL, $15.99. 2. Herbal Essences bio:renew Potent Aloe + Manuka Honey Shampoo 400mL, $19.99.

Big perm energy

Love that big-curl look? Nothing says ‘80s like a spiral perm but these days we have better options. Freestyle’s velcro rollers are heat-free so you can achieve volume without the damage. Kat recommends keeping your heat settings on low and always using a heat protectant. “Spray it into your hands and work it through your hair to ensure even distribution and less product wastage,” she says. To help add a bit of va-va-voom to finer hair, apply mousse (yes, it’s back) to wet hair, then tip your head upside down and blast until 80 per cent dry. Flip back over and smooth sections with a round brush, working your brush out and upwards instead of down. “Hair spray was essential to creating and keeping big dos back then,” says Kat. Luckily today’s sprays are less tacky, better smelling and easier to work with and brush out. They are less harmful to the environment, too. So, give it a spritz – just don’t overdo it.

To enhance naturally thick hair, Kat suggests hydrating, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. “It softens and weighs it down,” she says. If you’re having sex, there’s always a risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). While some STIs have obvious symptoms, others can go undetected. They can also affect men and women differently. If you think you have been exposed to an STI, visit your GP and ask to be tested. Barrier protection (such as a dental dam or condom) helps reduce your risk.

Consent is sexy. (Who doesn’t want to hear someone say, “Yes, I’d like to have sex with you”?) Affirmative consent means using words or actions to demonstrate a willingness to engage in mutually agreed-on sexual activity. You should seek consent each time you have sex, even with the same partner. You can also withdraw consent at any point if you no longer feel comfortable or don’t wish to continue having sex.

pleasure; from telling them what you like to asking about their fantasies – and even trying out new moves. Master the art of seduction with a few choice phrases to begin, building your vocabulary as you level up to titillating conversations.

From sending a few flirty emails or texts to sharing a spicy picture with your partner, it’s important to be safe in any digital communication when it comes to sex. Even with trusted partners, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to safe sexting: gain consent (no one wants to receive unsolicited texts or images), protect your identity (don’t include your face or any distinguishing features) and think about timing (is your partner at work or with friends who might catch a glimpse?).

PRICELINE: HOW CAN A PHYSICAL DISABILITY IMPACT INTIMACY? KELLY GORDON: A huge thing to think about is physical safety. I often allowed sex partners to assist me with standing, getting onto the floor and personal care. Luckily I was always helped but I recently thought, “what if they didn’t help me back into my chair?”. HOW CAN PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY PRACTISE SAFE SEX? The fact safe sex isn’t always accessible needs to change. Disabled people are often denied STI checks due to lack of accessibility, or contraception because of risks like blood clots.

Spray 80mL, $11.99.

WHAT IS IT LIKE DATING WITH A DISABILITY? Disabled people are just that: people! We want good sex and healthy relationships, and we enjoy self-pleasure like most people. When the disabled community is ‘othered’ it causes awkwardness. People want to do the right thing but the worry of offending takes over the desire to date or chat to a disabled person.

Whether it’s post-baby or postmenopause, your sexual needs and desires will change as your life changes – and that’s OK. Do what feels right for your body in whatever stage it’s in. That might mean having more sex, less sex, adding more lubrication or anything else.

WHAT CONVERSATIONS DO WE NEED TO HAVE ABOUT SEX AND DISABILITY? We need to discuss raw topics, to normalise them and make it easier for disabled people themselves to have these conversations. We need to offer access to sexual health services, sex aids and tools to have great relationships and sex.

Whether you’re single or in a relationship, self-love is an important part of a healthy sex life. There’s no shame in getting to know what you like so you can instruct a partner, or simply enjoying some alone time. And there are some great toys on the market to give you a helping hand. 2. Elevit Pregnancy Multivitamin Tablets 100 Pack, $71.99.

rom menarche (when periods begin during puberty) to menopause (when periods stop permanently), the average woman will have had 450 periods in her lifetime. And while these 2000 days (give or take) spent bleeding are significant, there’s often little attention paid to the other stages of our menstrual cycle. The most important thing to remember is that everyone’s cycle is different. “While there are general indicators throughout the month, it’s important to get to know your own body’s rhythm,” says Priceline Pharmacist Soumya Pandya. “If your period comes too early or too late, these are signs of a hormonal imbalance, which you would need to see your healthcare professional to treat.” For women who are trying to get pregnant, it’s become common practice to track menstrual cycles using an app like Clue or Flo. However, it’s beneficial for anyone who gets a period to be aware of changes throughout the month. By taking note of how you feel (physically, mentally and emotionally) and understanding how fluctuations in hormones impact energy levels, metabolism, sleep quality and mood, it’s possible to optimise your daily routines and get the best out of each phase, says Soumya.

Phase one:

(days 1–7)

The onset of your period marks the first day of the menstrual cycle. While the uterine lining is being shed, the brain is producing gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH) and follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH). This is reflected by symptoms such as low mood, cramps or aches, and heightened emotions. “Slow down, rest and be kind to yourself,” says Soumya. “Your period should not be painful. Mild discomfort is OK but anything severe could be a sign that something isn’t right.” Now is the time to focus on gentle movement, such as walking, or restorative practices like yin yoga.

Phase two:

(days 8–14)

The days between the end of the period and ovulation are called the follicular phase, and are marked by the maturing of follicles and release of luteinising hormone. “An increase in oestrogen levels is associated with higher energy, a switched-on metabolism and faster recovery, so exercising will feel easier and you generally recover more quickly,” says Soumya. Fill your diary with dates this week (you’ll be feeling confident and glowy), work up a sweat with high-intensity training and weights (particularly if your goal is weight loss) and even book a wax (pain threshold is thought to be highest during this phase).

Phase three:

(days 15–21)

Your luteinising hormone and oestrogen are at their highest levels during ovulation, resulting in the release of an egg. If you’re trying to get pregnant, this is go time. “It’s likely you’ll have a higher sex drive, increased appetite and feel more alert and awake during this phase,” says Soumya. But at the tail end progesterone rises, which can lead to less focus or cloudy memory. When you reach perimenopause (the transition into menopause), ovulation becomes more unpredictable. You might begin to have cycles without your ovaries releasing an egg, but you’re still considered fertile until you’ve gone 12 months with no periods at all.

Phase four:

Always read the instructions for use. Follow the instructions for use.

(days 22–28)

If fertilisation hasn’t occurred during ovulation, you’ll enter the luteal or premenstrual phase. Your body will continue to produce progesterone, while the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone dip. “You’re probably going to feel the effects of PMS during this phase,” says Soumya. “Bloating, tender breasts and anxiety are quite common a day or two before your period but if you have extreme mood swings and tears for days, there could be a hormonal imbalance you need to address.”

On average, Australian women use 10,000-12,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime. A few simple switches can significantly reduce the single-use waste associated with periods. A more eco-friendly time of the month is as easy as...

A single pair can hold up to four tampons’ worth of blood. While some women choose to use absorbent underwear throughout their entire flow, others find them a great alternative to overnight pads (which can lead to unwanted irritation and disrupted sleep). Wear them day or night with no fear of leakage and then just pop them in the wash.

2. Libra Reusable Underwear

Menstrual cups are made from soft silicone or natural rubber. They sit in the vaginal canal and collect blood safely for up to eight to 12 hours (depending on your flow). While they might be a bit awkward to get used to, once you’ve made the switch there’s no looking back. Simply empty and clean your cup (a few minutes in boiling water will sanitise and remove any bacteria) after each use. Most cups will last for up to 10 years and can be recycled.

Moving to organic cotton tampons or pads (which are free from potentially harmful ingredients) lowers your risk of bacteria and other infections like toxic shock syndrome (TSS). he past 40 years have taught us how crucial it is to encourage open dialogue around once-taboo topics, such as mental illness, in our homes, workplaces and broader communities. Despite this, many of us still struggle to broach uncomfortable conversations with those we love the most – particularly the men in our lives. Learning how best to communicate with our partners, sons, brothers and dads about awkward or confronting subjects will allow us to show our support in a way that resonates with them.

According to Lifeline, men account for 75 per cent of daily suicide deaths in Australia. Men are also less likely than women to have regular health checks, meaning common health concerns often go untreated until the later stages. Experts suggest that one of the best ways to support men through mental and physical health challenges is to promote open communication. “We need to discuss all domains of men’s health with the males in our lives to continue breaking down the stigma surrounding men prioritising their health,” says Carl Nelms, a registered Psychologist and Director of Blokes Psychology, a counselling service that provides mental health support tailored to boys and men. “Early intervention is key for all health issues and the earlier men seek support and treatment, the better the long-term outcomes. Better men equals a better society for all.”

One of the biggest (and easiest) mistakes we can make when approaching difficult conversations with men is pressuring them to speak. After raising the topic in a calm manner – whether it concerns mental health, visiting a healthcare professional or otherwise – let them come to you at a pace they feel comfortable with. Once they’ve responded to your approach with an eagerness to talk, the key to engaging in health-related conversations with men is to emphasise two things, says Priceline Pharmacist Kieran Baker. “Firstly, a motivating factor. For example, men need to be happy and healthy to best support those relying on them, such as their family and children.” Secondly, the normalisation of having regular health checks. Kieran suggests framing the conversation in a matter-of-fact way: “If you brush your teeth each day, you are doing something proactive about your health already, so extending this to other areas of your health is just as important.”

If the idea of visiting a Doctor for a formal check-up seems daunting, they may respond better to having a casual conversation with the local Pharmacist. “Pharmacists are our best-placed health professionals to have those first conversations in a relaxed context,” says Kieran. They can be sounding boards for a wide range of health-related matters and can advise customers on the best course of action. “There is never embarrassment in the pharmacy,” says Kieran. Let them know about Priceline’s SiSU Health Stations, a fuss-free way of instantly checking blood pressure, body composition, BMI, heart rate, heart age and more.

Being aware of the common health concerns faced by men at different life stages can help us understand what they’re facing and offer better support. When it comes to mental health, Carl says it’s important to be aware of the ‘Big Four’: anger, anxiety, addictions and depression. “These often arise at times of life transitions for men, such as becoming an adult, transitioning to fatherhood and retirement.” Like women, men undergo a range of physical changes throughout their lives that can feel confronting and even embarrassing at times.

This daily multivitamin will help fill nutritional gaps and maintain his general wellbeing. Nature’s Own Bodyfuel Men’s Multivitamin 60 Tablets, $23.99.

Wellness check-ins are important during this stage as men join the workforce and undergo significant life changes, such as having children. Some of the important health checks that are often neglected during these years are skin cancer checks and regular dental visits, says Kieran. Fertility checks are also becoming more routine for men, and Help him keep are encouraged for anyone thinking about his vitamin D levels in check starting a family.

Baldness, obesity, erectile dysfunction and prostate health become key concerns for men at this age. If men feel uncomfortable discussing these issues with a loved one or partner, health professionals such as Pharmacists and GPs are equipped to provide them with the advice and support they need.

From age 60 onwards, regular health checks become more important than ever as men undergo various physical changes. Mild arthritis, hypertension and immune conditions often arise from the age of 60, and are best dealt with when identified early. “If we don’t see our Pharmacist or Doctor regularly, physical and mental health concerns become more challenging to treat,” says Kieran. “Many preventative treatments and medication adjustments can make a huge impact on quality of life.”

It’s really knocked my confidence, and I’ve started to avoid catching up with friends because I’m worried it will happen when I’m out and about. What can I do to stop this? – LEAKY LESLEY

Firstly, incontinence is very common. In fact, 25 per cent of Australians experience it throughout their lifetime, with 50 per cent of Australian women who experience incontinence being under the age of 50. It’s also common for women who are pregnant or postpartum. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it can be a very frustrating and stressinducing part of life. There are various different kinds of both urinary and faecal incontinence, and it sounds like what you’re experiencing is stress incontinence, caused when bodily stressors (i.e. coughing, sneezing or laughing) cause the bladder to leak. Luckily there are easy things you can do to reduce the likelihood of stress incontinence occurring. Performing pelvic floor exercises (under the guidance of a healthcare professional) can help to prevent and treat urinary incontinence at any age. I know it’s tempting, but please resist the urge to reduce your water intake, as maintaining regular fluid levels is vital for the healthy functioning of the body. Instead, try to only empty your bladder when you feel the need, and ensure your diet is both fibre- and vitamin-rich. Believe it or not, 70 per cent of Australians who suffer with incontinence do not seek help, so it’s important to always visit your local Priceline Pharmacist or GP if you feel like you need some extra support. Dear Priceline Pam, I think I have thrush – my vagina is itchy and I’m getting white and clumpy discharge. Why is it happening and what can I do to get rid of it? – STRESSED BESS

Yep, that certainly sounds like thrush. Experienced by 75 per cent of women at least once in their lifetime, thrush occurs when the balance of flora in the vagina is disrupted and an overgrowth of yeast takes over. Some medications such as antibiotics and oral steroids can increase your chances of thrush, as well as hormonal changes. Despite what many people may think, thrush cannot be caught and is not sexually transmitted. Treating thrush is pretty straightforward. Canesten has a range of gels, creams and capsules for clearing up thrush, so have a chat to your Priceline Pharmacist to see which one is right for you (don’t feel awkward – they’ve heard it all before). There are also some easy lifestyle changes you can make. Sugar is yeast’s favourite food, so try to reduce your intake and stick to the recommended two servings of fruit per day. Yeast thrives in warm, damp environments, so wear breathable underwear and change pads and liners regularly. Minimising stress, getting enough sleep and consuming a balanced diet will also help.

Dear Priceline Pam, My partner won’t kiss me good morning because of my bad breath. I brush my teeth (and even floss) day and night, and have regular dentist check-ups. I’m anxious that it’s starting to affect our relationship. How can I get rid of it? – SMELLY MEL

Halitosis (the medical name for bad breath) is normal when you first wake up because bacteria builds up in the mouth overnight. Staying hydrated and avoiding odour-causing foods (like onions, garlic and spices) can help relieve the severity, though. If you’re maintaining good oral hygiene, there shouldn’t be too much cause for concern. Maybe just brush your teeth or use some mouthwash before you say Colgate xxxx, $000 good morning. However, sinus infections, acid reflux and even poor gut health can contribute to unusually bad breath. If you find the smell doesn’t abate throughout the day, you should chat with your local Priceline Pharmacist or GP about underlying issues.

Dear Priceline Pam, Lately I’ve been feeling bloated and pretty gassy. I always feel the need to fart or burp after eating or drinking, and it’s really embarrassing when I’m out sharing a nice meal with friends. Is there anything I can do to stop it? – GASSY GABBY

While it’s easier said than done, try not to feel embarrassed about this. Healthy adults expel between one and two litres of gas per day. One in six people without a health problem regularly experience bloating, so this is very normal. Bloating and gas occur when the microorganisms in your gut microbiome get overexcited and produce too much gas for your body to handle. Certain foods increase your chances of flatulence. Foods containing complex carbohydrates (e.g. peas, beans and wholegrains) take longer for your body to break down, so they stay in your gut for longer and go through a fermenting process where the bacteria produces gas. To reduce bloating and discomfort, avoid carbonated drinks (such as soft drinks and mineral water) as these are a combination of liquid and gas. Lactose, gluten and alcohol can also cause gas and bloating, so it’s important to identify your triggers and avoid them as much as possible. To help relieve the symptoms you’re experiencing, try drinking peppermint tea, taking charcoal capsules (to neutralise the gut) and incorporating pro- or prebiotics into your daily routine.

Dear Priceline Pam, After each time my partner and I have sex, I have a few days of discomfort – it burns when I urinate and I feel like I can’t fully empty my bladder. When it happens I just try to ignore it. Do I have an STI? What can I do to fix it? – NERVOUS NELLIE

It sounds like you’re experiencing a recurring urinary tract infection, or UTI. These are very common – one in two women will get a UTI in their lifetime. A UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary passageway and the most common symptoms include a burning sensation when passing urine, the need to urinate in small amounts and pain in the lower abdomen. UTIs are not sexually transmitted, but sexual intercourse increases the likelihood of bacteria coming in contact with your urinary passage. To reduce the chances of getting a UTI, urinate before and after sex to stop bacteria from lingering in the urethra or bladder. Your Pharmacist will be able to recommend a treatment to help clear up your UTI. They may suggest a urinary alkaliniser for a burning sensation when urinating or cranberry supplements to prevent bacteria from attaching to your urethra. If your symptoms linger for a few days you should visit your GP.

Dear Priceline Pam, I think I sweat more than most. Even when I’m at my desk, I can feel my armpits getting damp and I get selfconscious about smelling bad. Is there anything I can do to fix it? – SWEATY SUSIE

There are a range of factors that influence how much you sweat, such as age (older people sweat less), gender (men sweat more than women), hormone levels (adolescents and menopausal women sweat more), stress levels, diet and your degree of physical activity. The amount you sweat is likely to change over your lifetime. One important thing to note is that sweat alone doesn’t smell – body odour is a combination of sweat and bacteria. When your skin’s bacteria begin to feast on your sweat, they can multiply and create body odour. Washing your body with foaming soap will reset your sweat and bacteria balance, and applying antiperspirants to your underarms every day will reduce the amount of sweat that your body produces in that localised area. Pull on your leg warmers and dust off your boom box: we’re talking ‘80s workouts with Retrosweat founder Shannon Dooley

Let’s get physical 48 YOU 40th anniversary issue

priceline.com.au 49

The aerobics craze of the 1980s truly was a fitness trend like no other. The best part was, it came with its own distinct fashion movement that still pops up at exercise classes (and fancy dress parties) to this day. Songs like Olivia Newton-John’s 1981 hit ‘Physical’ helped turn aerobics into a global phenomenon, with women around the world embracing high-energy workouts and brightly coloured activewear. The ’80s taught us that exercise doesn’t have to be a miserable chore – it can actually be a whole lot of fun. And it’s a good thing, too, because retro fitness is back in a big way. You can thank Retrosweat founder Shannon Dooley for the re-emergence of the trend. Inspired by retro fitness icons like Jane Fonda and the Rancan Sisters, Shannon started her ’80s-inspired fitness group to make exercise outrageously fun again. “I love that the original 1980s group workouts were a genre of movement that was completely led by female entrepreneurs,” says Shannon. Since 2011, the Sydney-based group has become a cult favourite for its playful approach to exercise, complete with ’80s-style fashion, music and dance moves.

Picture it now: Jane Fonda in a bright yellow, high-cut leotard and matching leg warmers, sky-high hair and the energy to match, aerobicising in front of a dynamic group of women. Makes you wanna move, doesn’t it?

POST-SWEAT ESSENTIALS

Leotards and leg warmers aside, there’s no denying that Shannon’s high-energy workouts also get your heart pumping. Retrosweat’s classes are designed to be totalbody workouts. “We star jump, flick-kick and grapevine to the sweet sounds of David Bowie, Bananarama, Wham! and Pat Benatar.” If you feel like you’re stuck in a fitness rut, get creative and embrace workouts that don’t take themselves too seriously. Whether you’re a fan of group fitness sessions or prefer exercising in your living room, retro-style workouts will leave you feeling reinvigorated and totally nostalgic.

Take it easy

If it’s been a while between workout sessions, the prospect of pulling on your activewear and jumping into a highintensity workout may feel a little daunting. According to Priceline Pharmacist Ed Tanzil, the best way to get back into the fitness game is to take it slowly and make a plan. “It’s always best to start with beginner-level classes,” he says. “This ensures you get the basics right and gives you the confidence you need at the start before stepping things up.” In your first few sessions back, you may find that you sweat a little more than usual. To ensure you’re replenishing your fluids and electrolytes appropriately, stock up on some oral rehydration products such as Hydralyte’s ready-to-use solutions. 1. Hydralyte Ready To Use

Replenish your skin’s moisture content with this hard-working moisturiser containing SPF. No7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action Day Cream 50mL, $49.99.

Limber up

To prevent injury, doing a proper warm-up and cool-down is important every time you exercise. “Think about your muscles like you would an elastic band,” explains Ed. “If your muscles are cold, the risk of snapping them increases substantially, but if you let them warm up a little, you’ll be smashing out your workout without any fear.” Depending on what kind of workout you’re doing (cardio, weights, abdominals – you name it) you need to focus your postworkout stretches on the key muscle groups you’re using. If you’re going for a jog, for instance, your stretches should target your quads, hamstrings, calves and adductors. 2. Pain Away Sports Pain Relief Cream 70g, $18.99. 3. Deep Heat Regular Relief 50g, $5.29. 4. The Base Collective Magnesium Bath Salts 200g, $14.99. 5. Nurofen Berry Burst 24 Meltlets, $9.99.

Mood booster

Ever felt a rush of excitement after finishing a really good workout? “When you exercise, your body releases hormones called endorphins that have a positive impact on how you feel, giving you that sense of euphoria after completing an intense workout,” says Ed. “Ensuring your body gets a regular and healthy dose of these endorphins is super important for maintaining a wellbalanced mind and body.” And let’s face it – if you’re doing a workout as fun as one of Retrosweat’s classes, it’s virtually impossible not to have a blast. 5 4

Strengthen your family’s immune systems before the sniffles hitch a ride home with the kids

T

here’s nothing like finally sending the kids back to school after the holidays only to have them straight back at home with the sniffles. As school term approaches, start shoring up your family’s defences ahead of time. By taking a few easy precautions, they (and you) will have a better chance of fighting off bugs before they barge in and disrupt your life. Prevention is the key to your family’s health. From supplements that help build up your immune system to germ-busting hand sanitiser, it’s time to build the barricades. Priceline Pharmacist Nancy El-miski has plenty of advice to get you through cold season in fighting form – plus tips for treating any rogue runny noses that sneak through your defences.

Strengthen their insides

As It Falls Hand Sanitiser 250mL, $3.79.

“Without a doubt, the best way to help your body fight off illness is to stay at a baseline level of health,” says Nancy. Eating a wide variety of vegetables, especially green leafy ones, and vitamin-C rich foods like oranges and ginger is really important, as is eating enough food to allow the body to function at its best from the inside out. For more of a boost, you might consider a vitamin supplement; there are plenty of kid-friendly gummy options out there, or milk formulas with added vitamins for bubs and toddlers. Staying fit and healthy, and making sure they get plenty of sleep, will help give their body the best chance of fighting off germs. If they do come down with the sniffles, often the best thing to do is to encourage rest and let the body heal and recover. You can help it along by making sure they eat plenty of strengthening foods, such as beef-broth soups which have plenty of iron, and maximising sleep. Stay hydrated with plenty of water and electrolyte-packed products such as Hydralyte. “Remember to reach for those daily vitamins and treat the symptoms as soon as they appear,” says Nancy. “Hydralyte, vapour rubs, antibacterial wipes, cough syrups, Panadol and Nurofen are great staples to have on hand when cold and flu symptoms appear.”

Difflam Soothing Drops + Immune Support Honey & Lemon 20 Drops, $6.49.

Clearwipe Lens Cleaner 60 Value Pack, $9.99.

Watch what they touch If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from the pandemic, it’s how to protect ourselves and our kids from surface germs – and it’s a good idea to keep these healthy habits going strong. “Teach your kids about good hand hygiene at school and home,” says Nancy. “Keep hand sanitiser in their schoolbag for emergencies.” Remind your kids to wash their hands after touching public surfaces and before eating or touching their face – and don’t forget to wipe down sticky surfaces with antibacterial wipes (BYO school devices are a breeding ground for bugs). Masks do an amazing job of stopping airborne particles from spreading, and social distancing is a tactic you can use post-pandemic if you know you’ll be around a lot of people who are coughing and sneezing.

The dishes that defined a decade take centre stage in this retro-inspired menu. With a few choice substitutions (think a booze-free cocktail and frozen yoghurt dessert), we’ve brought classic ’80s dinner party fare into the 21st century.

62 YOU 40th anniversary issue

1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Spread tomatoes on a baking tray lined with baking paper, drizzle with 1 tbsp of the oil and season to taste. Roast for 10–15 minutes until tender and skins start to split. Set aside to cool. 2 Meanwhile, combine prawns, half the lemon juice, half the garlic, chilli and 2 tbsp of the oil in a bowl, season to taste, stir to combine and refrigerate to marinate for 20 minutes. 3 To make the avocado puree, process ingredients in a food processor to a silky-smooth texture; season to taste. 4 Process half the tomatoes in a food processor with buttermilk and remaining lemon juice and garlic until smooth; season to taste. 5 Preheat a chargrill to medium-high heat. Add prawns and chargrill, turning once, for 3 minutes until cooked through. 6 To serve, spread avocado puree on a platter. Top with cos wedges, avocado, cucumber, prawns and roast tomatoes. Drizzle with tomato dressing, scatter with mint and serve with lemon wedges.

1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper. Heat half the oil in a large frypan over medium-high heat. Add the spring onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes until tender. Transfer to a food processor. 2 Add kale to the pan in batches and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes until tender. Add spinach to the final batch for the last minute of cooking. Add to the food processor and process until smooth. Add the ricotta then process to combine. 3 Transfer to a large bowl, add yoghurt, lemon rind, lemon juice and herbs; season to taste. 4 Cut a hole 4cm wide and deep from the top of the cob loaf and reserve. Remove the bread from the centre of the loaf, leaving a 2cm-thick shell. Tear bread into 3cm pieces and spread in a single layer on one of the trays. Drizzle with remaining oil. 5 Spoon the spinach mixture into the bread shell, top with the reserved bread piece and place on remaining tray. Bake both trays for 20 minutes or until golden. Scatter cob loaf with extra herbs and serve with vegetables and bread pieces.

Serve with a scattering of health-boosting nuts and seeds – think almonds, pistachios, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and pepitas – for added crunch.

Black forest Viennetta Prep: 1 hour Cook: 10 mins (plus freezing, draining overnight) Serves: 8 1.5kg natural Greek-style yoghurt ²/³ cup maple syrup, plus 2 tbsp extra 2 tsp vanilla bean paste Cacao powder, for dusting Cacao nibs, for scattering Cherries, to serve CHERRY SYRUP 150g cherries, pitted ¼ cup (60mL) maple syrup Juice of ½ orange CHOCOLATE GLAZE ¹/³ cup coconut oil, melted 2 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp cacao powder, sifted 1 Whisk ¾ of the yoghurt in a bowl with maple syrup and vanilla. Transfer to a large shallow container and freeze, whisking occasionally for the first few hours until frozen. 2 Put remaining yoghurt in a bowl, refrigerate overnight and drain excess liquid before mixing with the extra maple syrup until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag and refrigerate. 3 To make cherry syrup, stir ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 mins until cherries are tender and liquid is syrupy. Strain, reserving cherries and syrup separately. Refrigerate to chill. 4 For glaze, stir ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Cool to room temperature. 5 Line a deep 11cm x 20cm loaf tin with plastic wrap and freeze.

Remove frozen yoghurt from the freezer and cut into small chunks. Process in batches. 6 Spread ¹/³ of the frozen yoghurt in the base of the tin (keep remaining frozen yoghurt in the freezer). Scatter with ¹/³ of the cherries, drizzle with a little chocolate glaze and dust with cacao powder. Freeze for 1 hour, then repeat, layering so you have three layers, reserving some of the glaze to serve. Freeze top layer for 1 hour until firm then pipe drained yoghurt mixture over the top. Scatter with cacao nibs, dust with cacao powder and freeze overnight. 7 Just before serving, gently heat the reserved chocolate glaze. Remove Viennetta from the tin and place on a chilled platter. Top with fresh cherries and serve with cherry syrup and glaze.
