TEENS
Wage a war on hormoneand stress-affected skin with these purifying picks that will tackle breakouts, oiliness and clogged pores. 1. Morning and night, use a cleanser formulated for acne-prone skin to remove excess oil. Try: Cetaphil Pro Acne Prone Oil Control Foam Wash 236mL, $17.49. 2. For a deeper clean, use a targeted exfoliant or mask one to two times a week. Charcoal helps draw out bacteria, while tea tree oil soothes skin. Try: Carbon Theory Charcoal & Tea Tree Oil Breakout Control Facial Exfoliating Scrub 125mL, $24.99. 3. Opt for a lightweight gel moisturiser to lock in hydration without overloading the skin. Try: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo(+) 40mL, $31.99. 4. An oil-free sunscreen is the final step. Don’t forget to reapply if you’re spending all day outdoors. Try: Clear Skincare Sunscreen SPF 30 Plus 50g, $30.
20s
This decade is all about forming good habits. Look to protective antioxidants and potent peels that will help prevent future concerns.
1. Introduce a double cleanse to rid your skin of make-up and impurities. Start with a balm formula to melt away daily grime, following up with a hydrating second clean. Try: Q+A Grapefruit Cleansing Balm 125mL, $18, and Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Cleanser 125mL, $15.

2. Antioxidant-packed vitamin C is your new best friend. In the morning, layer a serum under your moisturiser. It will brighten your complexion and help neutralise freeradical damage caused by sun exposure. Try: Skin Physics Oxygen-C Vitamin C Brightening Serum 30mL, $19.99. 3. Put your faith in targeted peels to enhance your exfoliating routine. Alpha hydroxy acids (such as lactic and glycolic acids) slough off dead and dull

skin, while beta hydroxy acids penetrate deeper to cleanse pores and improve congestion. Try: Revolution Skincare Multi Acid Peeling Solution 30mL, $20. 4. You know the drill: SPF is non-negotiable, especially when using active ingredients. A spray formula can be applied as the last step in your routine (even on top of make-up) and allows for easy reapplication throughout the day. Try: Avène Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+ 200mL, $34.99. It’s time to step up your skincare routine. Add formulas packed with active ingredients that work to improve texture and tone as well as target fine lines. 1. Bakuchiol is a natural alternative to retinol, working to smooth and plump the skin without irritation. It’s best to avoid direct sun exposure after use, so let your products do the work while you get your beauty rest by choosing an overnight cream or mask. Try: Sukin Purely Ageless Pro Intensive Revitalising Overnight Mask 50mL, $34.95. 2. After cleansing, layer on a serum that delivers a concentrated dose of Holy Grail ingredients such as vitamin E and squalane for nourishing hydration. Try: Models Prefer Green Routine Face Serum 30mL, $25.99. 3. Opt for a lightweight, tinted sunscreen for daily wear. Conceal as needed, and add a dab of blush and a flick of mascara to master the fresh-faced look. Try: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Fluid Facial Sunscreen SPF 50+ 50mL, $31.95. 1

40s If you’re in your fabulous 40s, now’s the time to focus on layering your skincare. Look for powerful ingredients that will work to reduce the appearance of spots, dullness and other signs of damage. 1. We love vitamin C for its antioxidant properties and brightening ability. Choose an exfoliant that incorporates this powerful ingredient to buff away
dry and damaged skin, and help energise your complexion. Try: Trilogy Vitamin C Polishing Powder 30g, $39.99. 2. Brighten, smooth and hydrate the delicate eye area with a specially formulated cream. Keep an, ahem, eye out for caffeine on the ingredients list – it can help to reduce the appearance of puffiness. Try: Alya Skin. Pink Pearl Illuminating Eye Cream 15mL, $39.99.
3. Retinol is a magical ingredient when it comes to looking after your skin (it smooths fine lines, brightens skin and minimises breakouts – pure witchcraft). Combine it with glow-inducing vitamin C to really supercharge your skincare. Try: StriVectin Super-C Retinol Brighten & Correct Vitamin C Serum 30mL, $112. 4. Probiotics help support the digestive system, which can impact the appearance of your hair, skin and nails.
To really get that glow from within, look for products that also include collagen, which helps maintain skin elasticity. Try: Life-Space Probiotics + Skin Glow 150g, $41.99. 5. We know how important SPF is (a daily sunscreen should have been part of your routine for years by now). Look after your lips as well with a soothing balm that offers broad spectrum protection. Try: Natio Moisturising Lip Balm SPF 50+ 4g, $4.95.

Add a moisturising body wash to your shower routine to help keep your skin soft and supple. Try: Ego QV Gentle Wash 1kg, $19.99. 3. It’s not just our faces that show signs of ageing; taking care of your hand and nail health is a key part of any beauty regimen.

YOU SPRING 2021
During the chilly months, many of us turn to rich, hydrating skincare products to protect our complexions from the effects of cold and dry temperatures. But when spring rolls around, these trusty winter beauty mainstays can be too heavy for the warmer weather. “As the seasons change, it’s best to switch to more lightweight alternatives, as thicker products combined with the heat can make your skin too oily and cause breakouts,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Krystal Koulis. “These lighter options will absorb faster and leave the skin feeling cool, which can help with visible puffiness.”

Should it stay or should it go?
Now that you’ve got your skincare sorted, it’s time to overhaul your beauty bag. Start by placing each product on a clean towel, then give your make-up storage a thorough clean with an antibacterial wipe. Next, go through your products and bin the ones that have overstayed their welcome. Not sure where to start? As a rule of thumb: mascara, eyeliner and foundation should be kept for no longer than six months while powderbased products like blush or setting powder should be fine for 18 months to two years. But above all, note any changes in smell, colour or texture, which are telltale clues a product has gone off. If in doubt, chuck it out. Besides having the potential to clog your pores, expired cosmetics can also cause irritation and infections.
Brush up on cleaning Brushes and other application tools are often porous and prone to collecting build-up from make-up, dead skin cells, sebum and grime – creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. “Applying dirty brushes onto a clean face doesn’t just defeat the time you’ve spent caring for your skin, it can also lead to breakouts and irritation,” says Krystal. So keep your brush maintenance in check by cleaning them at least once per week. STEP 1. Rinse your brushes under warm, running water and apply a peasized amount of brush cleaner to your palm or a brush-cleaning mat. STEP 2. Swirl the brushes around in the cleaner then rinse thoroughly. Examine them closely and if any make-up remains, repeat this step. STEP 3. Lay your brushes flat on a clean towel in a bright, airy spot to dry. PRICELINE.COM.AU

Fancy a bit of ‘eye yoga’?
These days, yoga isn’t just for your body, it’s for your eyeballs, too. This curious practice, now trending worldwide, involves performing a variety of ocular exercises, such as focus shifting, rolling or holding your palms over your eyes. While there’s no substantial evidence that eye yoga can help correct sight conditions, “There is some indication it might help your ability to focus your eyes and help relieve symptoms of eye strain,” says Linh.

your screen brightness to a level suitable for your surroundings and repositioning the screen at an arm’s length away. Reducing glare from sunlight or internal light and trying a blue light filter will help alleviate strain throughout the day, while keeping your eyes moist with lubricating drops can help provide fast relief.

here’s no feeling like the relief of switching off the computer at the end of a long day and resting your tired eyes. Long hours of screen time can contribute to a variety of eye issues including strain, dryness or irritation, and can even lead to more serious side effects such as loss of focus flexibility and near-sightedness. “We tend to blink less while staring at the blue light from a screen, and the movement of the screen makes your eyes work harder to focus. We also don’t typically position the screen at an ideal distance or angle, which can cause added strain,” says Priceline Pharmacist Linh Nghiem. “All these issues add up and can lead to lasting effects on vision, especially in children.” If you can’t limit your screen time due to work or other commitments, there are steps you can take to reduce the impact on your eyes. Get in the habit of looking at an object six metres away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Linh suggests adjusting

ith a seemingly endless supply of lotions and potions on the market, skincare can be a rather confusing topic. Ceramides have been around for a while, but have recently experienced a renewed surge in popularity. Naturally found in our skin cells, they help build up a barrier to lock moisture into your skin. They are also said to have anti-ageing benefits as fine lines and wrinkles are more visible when skin is parched. Swisse Bio-Ceramides Renewing Defence Cream 50g, $24.99.

These are all types of acids that can help treat a variety of skin concerns. AHA: AHAs, or alpha hydroxy acids, include glycolic, lactic, citric and tartaric acids. They’re used to treat hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, fine lines and uneven skin tone. BHA: BHAs, or beta hydroxy acids, include salicylic acid and some citric acids. These can get deeper into the pores than AHAs and can help address acne scarring, rosacea and sun damage. If you’re trying to treat multiple skin concerns, it’s possible to use both AHAs and BHAs, but not at the same time. Because they both exfoliate the skin, layering the ingredients could cause dryness and irritation. Instead, try alternating them on consecutive days. PHA: PHAs, or polyhydroxy acids, are new to the skincare scene. Another type of acid exfoliator, PHAs can work wonders for your complexion by enhancing skin renewal. While suitable for all skin types, their gentle nature makes them good for sensitive complexions.
Clear Skincare Copper Peptide Serum 15mL, $45.
LESSON 4: PEPTIDES
Natio Treatments Skin Renewal Ceramide Line & Wrinkle Cream 75mL, $21.95.
LESSON 3: RETINOL
LESSON 1: AHA, BHA AND PHA
Olay Regenerist Collagen Peptide24 Moisturiser 50g, $59.99.
Considered to be one of the best anti-ageing ingredients, retinol (vitamin A) can boost the skin’s natural renewal process, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and increase collagen production. It’s best to start with a gentle formula a couple of times per week to see how your skin tolerates it, then build up to a higher active percentage. Because retinol makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, you’ll also want to be diligent with your daily SPF.
Sun Bum SPF 50+ Face Lotion 88mL, $17.99.
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Reapply frequently. It is important to wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear when exposed to the sun.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that are naturally present within the body, forming the basis of proteins such as collagen, elastin and keratin – all essential for healthy skin. But like with a lot of things, age causes our peptide production to slow down, compromising our skin’s texture, strength and firmness. Applied topically, peptides encourage skin cells to build collagen and elastin for a revitalised complexion.
LESSON 5: VITAMIN C
Renowned for its brightening ability, vitamin C is used to improve the appearance of dull skin and pigmentation. It can also promote collagen production and smooth fine lines and wrinkles, while its antioxidant properties help protect the skin from free radicals.
Skin Physics Dragon’s Blood Retinol Sleep Serum 2% Retinoid 30mL, $29.99.

Seeing green
Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, is a Japanese therapy that aims to connect all five senses to nature. It’s not a physical exercise as much as a mental one – a gentle stroll is as strenuous as it gets. Listen to the sounds of birds, breathe in the fresh air, dip your toes in a stream. It may sound a bit airy-fairy but that’s the whole point, right? Giving yourself the space to be free from commitments, conversations and constant updates is exactly what we need. Spending time in nature is the perfect excuse to take a digital detox because you probably won’t have reception anyway. While we might not all live near magical woodlands, the practice can be transferred to wherever you have access to the natural world: a park, a beach or a paddock.
INTO THE WILD The great outdoors is the inspiration for rewilding, the latest wellness trend proving that getting back to nature really is the best therapy

fter living in the confines of various lockdowns over the past year, it’s no wonder we’re craving wide open spaces. In search of this escape, rewilding has emerged as the latest fixation for wellness fiends. The concept is borrowed from a progressive approach to conservation where nature is left to take care of itself, free from intervention. By the same thought process, removing ourselves from the expectations of society and switching off from the relentless churn of technology by spending time in nature can let us begin to repair. Keen to reconnect with the earth? Here are three ways you can tap into the trend.
Maybe it’s the algorithm at work, but tiny houses and far-flung cabins are flooding our newsfeeds of late. So it seems the next big thing in travel is actually quite small. There’s something charming about the thought of spending a few nights holed up inside a house in the middle of nowhere. The trend is all about a less-is-more mentality. Bring only what you need and let nature be your entertainment.
Cream of the crop
A do-it-yourself mindset has led to an increase in homegrown vegies gracing our tables. Whether you’ve got space in your own backyard or can join a community allotment, gardening is the ultimate expression of nurturing nature. Skip the farmers’ market and sow your own seeds for fresh leafy greens, creamy potatoes and some topsy-turvy carrots. They might not be perfect, but they will be your pride and joy. Nourish your vegie patch with compost for a truly circular kitchen. And if your space is limited by the four walls of an inner-city apartment, try a herb garden or chilli plant on your kitchen windowsill.
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.

A NEW ROUTINE
Daylight savings can interrupt even the most routine sleepers. But never fear, there are ways to prevent sleepless bubs and overtired toddlers. Being prepared is the key to a smooth seasonal change. In the lead-up to the clocks going forward, start shifting sleep and feed times 15 minutes earlier each day. For example, if your TOP TIP first feed is normally at Blockout 7am, from Thursday start blinds are at 6.45am; then Friday at a saviour 6.30am; Saturday at for older 6.15am; and by the time children who Sunday morning comes might be around, your bub will be confused adjusted to the new 7am. about going This gradual shift in routine to bed will help the whole family before transition more easily to it’s dark. the time change.
BLESS YOU!
Just like adults, your little one might suffer from seasonal allergies. “One definite downside of spring weather is an increase in pollen in the air,” says Priceline Pharmacist Linh Nghiem. “Itchy eyes and skin, sneezing and a runny nose are all common hayfever symptoms.” A saline nasal spray can help keep baby’s nose clear of congestion, which is important for sleeping and feeding.
HEAT WAVE
The warmer temperatures can make your baby sweaty, flushed and cranky. “Sweat rash might appear as red patches in the creases of their elbows and knees,” says Linh. Applying a soothing cream or moisturiser will help calm skin and relieve discomfort for your bub. Loss of appetite is also common in hotter weather. Cool baby down before meals using cold compresses and by dressing in lighter clothing for comfort.

September 23 – October 23
You’re all about balance, and Pilates offers the perfect mix of stretch and strength to satisfy your athletic tendencies. As an air sign, you’re blessed with the gift of the gab. Staying in touch with your nearest and dearest is super important, and you’re not afraid to pick up the phone. If you’re looking for new minds to mesh with, joining a book club is a great way to stimulate that strong intellect of yours. Ruled by Venus – the planet of indulgence – treat yourself to a spa day when you need a little pick-me-up. Why not book the facial, the wholebody massage and the luxury pedicure. You’re worth it.
October 24 – November 21
Boxing is the best way to burn off that feisty Scorpio energy. If you’re stressed or under pressure, channel any negativity into the positive pursuit, taking it all out on the punching bag in front of you. Be kind to yourself and try to find ways to unwind from all that zest. Pop a few drops of essential oil into a diffuser and fill your space with good vibes only. Patchouli can help calm turbulent emotions and simmer anger. Lavender and frankincense can also help soften the Scorpio sting with their grounding properties. Product of the month: Remember to take a deep breath. Try Natio Focus On Breathing Pure Essential Oil Blend 25mL, $29.95.
SAGITTARIUS
Ah Virgo, the perfectionist. Playing tennis is a great way to harness your analytical and hardworking nature while building up a sweat. Your endurance makes you a mean opponent, just don’t overdo it with your obsessive traits. Off the court, you find calm in organisation. From Marie Kondo-ing your home to writing to-do lists, order makes you happy. Journalling is a great way to silence the inner monologue that can drive you crazy.
SCORPIO
August 23 – September 22
November 22 – December 21
You can’t be bound by the four walls of a gym. Freedom and spontaneity are your defining traits, which make hiking the best activity to satisfy your wandering personality. To revive tired legs afterwards, try an infrared sauna. It’s said to penetrate deeper than a traditional sauna for a more intense detox. Your lucky colour is purple, so set the LEDs to violet for the dual benefits of skin-clearing (blue light) and anti-ageing (red light). Product of the month: Satisfy your wild side with a down-to-earth palette. Try Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eye Shadow 4.8g in Addictive, $24.95.

PISCES CAPRICORN
December 22 – January 19
Your disciplined nature makes you the perfect marathon runner. As an earth sign, you’re practical, responsible and self-reliant, so the meal prep and schedules that come alongside training for such a feat are part of the fun. After all, setting goals and working to achieve them with relentless ambition is what gets you off. But all work and no play makes you a dull Capricorn. Remember to take time out every once in a while – get your nails done, meet a friend for brunch and shake off those inhibitions.

YOU SPRING 2021
For Aquarians, mental exercise is just as important as physical. Grounding is the best therapy for an air sign like you. It’s an activity that sees you immerse yourself in nature to reconnect with the earth’s energies, which helps restore your body’s natural balance. Try walking barefoot across sand or grass, touching the trees around you and really listening to what’s going on, whether you’re by the ocean, on a mountain or in a rainforest. The best part is taking the opportunity for a total tech detox. Don’t be tempted to snap the sunset for the ’gram – just let it all soak in. Product of the month: Detox your mind and body. Try Ecopure Bath Detox Loofah Brush, $14.99.
February 19 – March 20 It might seem obvious for a water sign – and one with fish as its symbol, no less – but wild swimming is the perfect activity for you, Pisces. Not simply about doing laps, it inspires you to get off the beaten track and find natural bathing spots such as waterfalls and ocean pools. It’ll satisfy your adventurous spirit, plus plunging into cold water has proven health benefits, including calming anxiety – which we all know your hyper emotions need. When you’re dried off, indulge your artistic flair in adult art classes. From drawing to ceramics or even knitting, there’s no end to your creative pursuits. Product of the month: For oceaninspired beauty, try The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics 30mL, $12.90.
ARIES March 21 – April 19
Determined, assertive, passionate: these are the traits that define you. So what’s the perfect space to channel your energies? Competitive sports – think soccer, tennis, water polo or netball. Anywhere you can show off your athletic flair. A desire to get the most out of every day means you’re used to surviving on minimal sleep, but maintaining that pace can lead to you being a bit moody. So make time for a moment of self-care – and perhaps another coffee – in your day. Product of the month: To hide those tired eyes, try Models Prefer Eye Brightener 2.6mL, $13.99.
April 20 – May 20
Strong like a bull – your celestial spirit animal – strength training is the best exercise for Taureans. You’re well-acquainted with the weights rack at the gym and your stubbornness pays off as you refuse to leave until your program is complete, no matter who is monopolising the kettlebells. So how do you unwind? Chances are you love a lazy Sunday morning. Embrace it. In fact, choose a good book, make a cup of tea and stay in bed all day. Product of the month: For a healing soak, try Natio Spa Relaxing Magnesium & Mineral Bath Salts 350g, $14.95.

GEMINI
May 21 – June 21
With a mind that goes 100 miles a minute, and a personality more high-octane than a spin class, you need to take a chill pill, Gem. The best way to centre yourself? Yoga. Gliding into downward dog or challenging yourself with crow pose is how you find a moment of calm. Your endless curiosity is the perfect reason to try a new hobby (or two, for the twins). From learning a foreign language to throwing a vase on the wheel at your local ceramics studio or even nurturing a bonsai tree, indulge your whimsy and engage in thoughtful activities where you’ll meet like minds.

The homebodies of the zodiac, Cancers have whole-heartedly embraced the new wave of at-home workout videos. From ballet barre to HIIT, let your intuition guide you and choose the exercise that serves you most each day. Ruled by the moon, your emotional and empathetic nature can sometimes take its toll, so make sure you carve out a space to have your own needs met. Therapy is a great way to unleash your inner voice, learn how to express your feelings and manage your emotional load without boiling over. Product of the month: To create a sanctuary of calm, try Natio Home Scent Spray Mist Lavender 100mL, $17.95.
LEO July 23 – August 22
The leader of the pack, you’re not afraid to be the centre of attention. So dance. Learn a sultry samba or live out your Dirty Dancing fantasies in ballroom classes. There’s no denying that you love the drama, so something theatrical, such as a community play, could also be a great hobby. With a warm-hearted nature, you don’t take yourself too seriously. How do you prepare for being in the spotlight? Skincare, of course. Pop on a robe and let a hydrating serum or mask do the work. Product of the month: To get showtime-worthy skin, try Andalou Naturals Age Defying Rejuvenating Serum 30mL, $44.95.
Product of the month: For a scent as multifaceted as you, try Jean Paul Gaultier Classique EDT 50mL, $126.

STRESS T EST
Stress can be a frustrating part of everyday life, but perhaps never more so than when it shows on our skin. Here’s how you can regain control and look forward to clearer days ahead
EDWARD TANZIL Priceline Pharmacist
I
t’s completely changed life as we know it, so it’s no surprise that the pandemic has caused an increase in stress and anxiety among Australians. And when we’re stressed, it shows. “During periods of stress, the body triggers a series of hormones to be released in order to activate our fight-or-flight response,” explains Priceline Pharmacist Edward Tanzil. “One of those critical hormones is cortisol. Increased periods of elevated cortisol levels can eventually lead to increased acne breakouts and thinning of the skin.” Elevated stress levels create an imbalance by disrupting the hormones that regulate sebum. More oil production leads to more clogged pores and,
34
YOU SPRING 2021
you guessed it, more pimples. Stress acne differs from the hormonal spots you might experience at that time of the month, appearing in the oiliest areas of the face, such as your forehead and nose. If blackheads, whiteheads and a greasy T-zone feel like a throwback to your troublesome teenage skin, that’s because your body was dealing with a lot of stress and change at that age, too. Thankfully, the rules remain the same when it comes to treating it as an adult, so be sure to gently and thoroughly remove dirt and grime to avoid acne-causing bacteria. And while some complexion concerns are only skin-deep, when it comes to combating breakouts, it pays to look at what external factors might be at play, too.

REGULAR ROUTINE
A regular cleansing and moisturising routine will help keep breakouts at bay. Do it morning and night so that you’re thoroughly removing excess oil, dirt and sweat, and be sure to use products that match your skin type. “Maintaining good skin requires a regular, gentle approach rather than an aggressive one-stop-shop fix,” says Edward. “Avoid the temptation to use overly harsh products on your skin, and don’t chop and change products constantly.” Build your best skincare routine, adding in specialty acne products where needed.

BE KIND, UNWIND
For those who have been medically diagnosed with a skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, you’ll know that stress can cause flare-ups due to the inflammatory response triggered by cortisol. Finding ways to relieve stress will help to improve your skin plus contribute to your overall wellbeing.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Research has shown that specific foods might be linked to a higher incidence of acne breakouts. High levels of sugars and fats often appear in the diets of acne sufferers. Edward says balance is the key. “Rather than including or excluding certain foods, it’s usually best to focus on maintaining a balanced diet.” Reducing your intake of cheap calories and prioritising nutrient-rich foods is the foundation of a healthy lifestyle – and good skin. If you’re still struggling to get an adequate intake of nutrients, supplements can help support your diet.

GUT INSTINCT Feeling bloated? Here’s how lifestyle factors can have an impact on the mechanics of your gut
GEOFF HOPE
Priceline Pharmacist
Y
ou know that ‘blah’ feeling after eating? The one usually accompanied by a sore gut and perhaps the undoing of a pants button (hey, it happens to the best of us). From simply overindulging to more serious conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or coeliac disease, bloating is a common concern. “Rich foods, meals that are high in salt or carbohydrates and carbonated drinks can all lead to that uncomfortable, swollen feeling,” explains Priceline Pharmacist Geoff Hope.
YOUR
TOOLKIT When food isn’t digested properly or fully absorbed in the small intestine, it travels through to the large intestine, where bacteria turn it into gas. Some foods are more likely to make you gassy (we’re looking at you, brussels sprouts), but we’re all different so a food that makes your stomach swell might not necessarily be a trigger for someone else. The good news is that making dietary changes and improving your microbiome can help the body break down foods properly, absorbing the nutrients it needs and removing waste more efficiently. While it’s always worth seeking professional advice about your diet if you suffer from bloating, here are a few ways you can improve digestion and support your metabolism.
KEEP MOVING
PRODUCTS MAY BE AVAILABLE AT SELECTED STORES ONLY. CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE ON 1300 88 44 11 FOR YOUR NEAREST STOCKIST. PRICES ARE PRICELINE’S NORMAL NATIONAL SELLING PRICE AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. PRICES AND STOCK MAY VARY IN STORES AND ONLINE. WHILE STOCKS LAST.
Regular exercise can encourage digestion, but vigorous exercise can sometimes trigger gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea and heartburn. If this is the case for you, keep things slow, opting for low-intensity workouts such as walking, swimming or yoga.
CHEW, CHEW, CHEW
Chewing your food thoroughly gives your body the best chance of digesting it efficiently. The act of chewing not only physically breaks down the food, but it also triggers the release of enzymes to help with the digestive process.
STAY HYDRATED
There are a few theories around drinking during meals (some more myths than others), but the general consensus is that drinking water in moderation is a good thing. Taking small sips between bites can help you pace yourself, meaning you take in less air. All the more reason to keep drinking your eight glasses a day.
EMBRACE GOOD FATS
Processed foods and rich, fatty meals can make you feel sluggish as they take the body longer to break down. But don’t dismiss the good fats! Foods that are high in omega-3, including fish, nuts and seeds, give good gut health.
Good gut health has an overall impact on the immune system. Vitamins and supplements can help regulate bowel movements and reduce bloating.
Bioglan Apple Cider Vinegar 120 Capsules, $25.99.
BAN BOOZE
The digestive system works extra hard to expel alcohol from your system as quickly as possible. This throws your regular gut function out of whack, as the digestion of food takes a backseat. And if you’re mixing spirits with sugary or fizzy drinks, it’s a bloating double-whammy.
FORGET MIDNIGHT
Happy Flora Cleanse & Relieve Laxative Tonic 220mL, $16.99.
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
Metamucil Daily Fibre Supplement Orange Smooth 673g 114 Doses, $31.49.
SNACKS
Avoid eating too much right before bed to help your digestive system take it slower at night. This way, while you’re sleeping, your gut can stay focused on repairing and rebuilding important tissues – not digesting that late-night ice-cream.
This medicine may not be right for you. Read the label before purchase. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
JUST RELAX

ertility is a complex and emotional issue. But it’s a pertinent topic: one in six couples in Australia struggles with fertility issues. It’s a statistic that affects men and women equally. “In 40 per cent of couples, the cause of infertility is related to the sperm, in another 40 per cent, issues arise within the female reproductive system,” says Priceline Pharmacist Linh Nghiem. So why does it feel like the burden weighs heavier on women’s shoulders?

Even though the phrase ‘biological clock’ makes us shudder, it’s an undeniable truth. A woman’s fertility starts to reduce when she’s in her early 30s and it steadily declines after the age of 35. As more women exercise their right to pursue education, careers and establish their lives before deciding to start a family, it has become imperative to have all the facts about fertility. And starting the conversation sooner rather than later is the key to understanding your options. When it comes to getting pregnant, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical. Everything from what’s on your plate to stressful work and demanding deadlines can impact your body’s functions. And of course, alcohol, cigarettes and drug use can hinder your chances of conceiving, too. “If you’re trying to get pregnant, it’s best for you and your partner to maintain a healthy lifestyle, reduce your alcohol and caffeine consumption, stop smoking, eat well and exercise regularly,” Linh says. Zooming in on exercise and nutrition, and getting to know your body’s rhythm, will help bolster the reproductive system. “Your cycle, or the regularity of your cycle, can be affected by stress, changes in weight or excessive physical activity,” Linh says. The physical tolls that stress and anxiety take on the body upset

its most important functions, from disrupting your sleep patterns to delaying your menstrual cycle. While it may be easier said than done, finding ways to relax and take the pressure off pregnancy can help your chances of conceiving. Getting to know your cycle is an important step in understanding any hormonal imbalances you might be experiencing. Keeping note of your moods, symptoms and periods in a diary or health app is the best way to track which phase you’re in throughout the month. Ovulation typically happens around the 14th day of your cycle, but at-home tests and basal thermometers can help determine your peak chances of conceiving. Similarly, monitoring your cervical mucus and noticing the telltale signs of ovulation (it will be very wet and stretchy, resembling raw egg white) is your body’s way of signalling when the window of opportunity is open.
Tracking your menstrual cycle and changes in your cervical mucus are the best ways to know when it’s time to get down to business. Keep in mind that conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis, which affect the structure or function of the reproductive system, can reduce fertility or delay conception. Women with these conditions may want to

Fitness and nutrition guru Libby Babet breaks down the hottest new workout trends for spring

YOU SPRING 2021
THE
WARM UP
Prior to any workout, you should warm up to get blood flowing to your muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments before you put them under strain. When you’re cool, static stretching can create microtears that may turn into injuries, so try dynamic stretches (ie moving stretches) such as lunge walks, squats, butt kicks, star jumps, push-ups and bodyweight hinges. Start light and build intensity once your blood is moving and you’ve worked up a sweat.
If you’re time-poor, try... micro-HIIT workouts Research shows that short bursts of intense exercise (aka HIIT, or high intensity interval training) can be an efficient way to get fit. A popular method is tabata training, which is 20 seconds at full exertion, then 10 seconds rest, repeated for four minutes. It’s great for reducing body fat, but whether it’s right for you depends on your goals and current level of conditioning. It will help with your general fitness and body shape, but isn’t the ideal type of training if you’re looking to run a marathon, for example. Incorporate some other types of exercise into your week, too, such as brisk walks and Pilates.
NUTRITION TIP
No matter what fitness regimen you’re following, you can’t train out a poor diet. So eat ‘real’ foods as much as you can and get as much variety as possible. This means plenty of fruit and vegies, plus the best quality animal food sources you can get your hands on, ideally organic, grass-fed and regeneratively farmed. If you’re following a plant-based diet, get your iron and vitamin B levels checked regularly and consider a supplement if necessary.
If you need a workout refresh, try... dancing From high-intensity dance styles such as Afro Step and Zumba to the classics like jazz, dance has become popular among those keen to change up their workout routines. It’s been shown to not only be a great physical workout, but a mental one, too – learning choreography helps build neural pathways and improves your mental capacity. And to dance well, you need to be in the moment, which means disengaging the analytical part of your brain and getting in the zone to really focus on your form.

If you’re feeling nostalgic, try... rollerblading If you care for the environment, try... ‘plogging’ Combining the Swedish phrase ‘plocka upp’ (to pick up) with jogging, this unique fitness craze merges jogging with picking up litter. A win for both your fitness and the environment, it’s a great workout to do with your friends and family. Having started in Sweden, the fitness trend has gone global in recent years via social media, with plogging groups popping up in all corners of the world. And it couldn’t be easier to get started: simply slip on a pair of gloves (and your sneakers), grab a bag and join the movement.
Rollerblading is in the midst of a renaissance as people turn to retro workout methods for exciting ways to elevate their heart rates. Up the ante by combining it with dance for a unique cardio workout that will also improve your coordination. Known as roller dance, this fun fitness trend is already huge online, where you can find countless tutorials that will take you from beginner to advanced. Want to give it a try? Make sure you wear a helmet, kneepads and take all precautions to avoid hurting yourself. Blackmores Super Magnesium+ 100 Tablets, $28.99. Helps to support muscle recovery, reduce cramps and boost energy levels. Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
If you’re working from home, try... a workout app More time at home has resulted in an explosion of online workouts such as yoga classes on YouTube. And because they’re so convenient, it’s a great way to stay consistent. But remember, it may not be the best option if you’re new to fitness as technique is important to avoid injury (and you won’t have someone watching and correcting your form at home).
THE
COOL DOWN
Cooling down and stretching after a workout can help to reduce muscle soreness by keeping your blood circulating and decreasing lactic acid build-up. Try static stretching after your workout when your muscles are nice and juicy, as this is a great time to work on your flexibility and mobility. A cool down also calms your body, helping you go from the fight or flight mid-workout state, back to a more relaxed feel.

How learning to hone your gut instinct and wake up your inner voice can help you live a happier, healthier life

YOU SPRING 2021
U
ntil recently, ‘living intuitively’ might have sounded like a woo-woo concept, with little scientific evidence to support the notion that intuition even existed, let alone that it was a principle we should live by. But a 2016 study led by Professor Joel Pearson proved the existence of intuition from a neurological perspective, defining it as “the ability to make successful decisions without rational, analytical thought or inference”. When faced with a new situation, the study concluded, the mind looks for similar experiences stored in long-term memory and presents judgements accordingly, often based on subtle perceptual cues we’re not even conscious of. Our intuition has long been considered to be most closely related to how we truly feel about a person or situation, without interference from external preconceived notions about how we ‘should’ think or act. While the development of our intuition largely happens in the brain, you’d swear it was taking place elsewhere – like in the gut. “I knew something was wrong,” says bestselling author, podcaster and modern guru Glennon Doyle about her first marriage. “I knew it the way we know deep in our bones when something’s off. But I was told no, you’re crazy... That’s why the Untamed rally cry is: ‘You’re not crazy. You’re a goddamn cheetah.’ It’s a mantra in direct opposition to the universal gaslighting of women.” In her book Untamed, Doyle discusses falling in love with her now-wife, athlete Abby Wambach, while still married to the father of her children, and how she grappled with starting over. “I looked hard at my faith, my friendships, my work, my sexuality, my entire life and asked: ‘How much of this was my idea? Do I truly want any of this, or is this what I was conditioned to want?’” Following your intuition doesn’t have to result in divorce, or a shift in sexuality akin to Doyle’s – it could be something as simple as tapping into whether a particular friendship is still serving you, or if you genuinely
enjoy your job. And while living a life guided entirely by intuition may be easier said than done – not least because we experience conflicting motivations that make it difficult to follow our whim – that doesn’t mean you should silence your inner voice entirely. “We so often walk through our days on autopilot,” says Judi Ketteler, author of Would I Lie to You? The Amazing Power of Being Honest in a World That Lies. Ketteler believes that honesty and intuition are intrinsically linked, and at their crux? “Tapping into intuition and focusing on being more truthful are both about paying attention.” Ketteler notes that being an intuitive decision-maker doesn’t make someone flighty or irrational, and her approach to radical honesty certainly has merit. Research from the University of Notre Dame in the US showed that when people actively stopped lying (even telling white lies) for 10 weeks, they reported fewer mental health concerns and felt better about their social relationships, while even physical effects such as headaches decreased. “Even though honesty felt like a struggle, I started to like how it felt,” Ketteler has said. Luckily, Ketteler believes our intuition is something that can be retrained. These days, “I [give] myself more space to just have free thought,” she says. “For me, this mostly happens while taking long Sunday runs. I found that in that space, where I didn’t have anywhere else to be, I wasn’t accountable to anyone and unconnected from technology or expectation, those clear bubbles of intuition would often find me again. I would come back from a run feeling far more clear about some issue or situation. I’m also an advocate for mental health and therapy. If you can’t see your way through something on your own, a therapist can be a big help.” At one stage, Ketteler made a point of keeping an honesty journal, and says: “I still go back to it sometimes. It definitely helped me spot my own patterns.” Likewise, when it comes to honing your intuition, experts suggest keeping notes about your gut feelings about a situation, then later comparing
those to real-life outcomes, to help you recognise and therefore trust your intuition where it’s strongest, and alternatively identify areas where it may have been clouded by emotion or anxiety. But according to Doyle, the truth really isn’t that hard to find – it’s been there all along, we’ve just avoided facing up to it. In one of her sage analogies from Untamed, she compares women to snow globes. “We spend all of our time, energy, words and money creating a flurry, trying not to know, making sure that the snow doesn’t settle so we never have to face the fiery truth inside of us.” And finding it could be as simple as taking a shower. “The shower’s the only place you’re not plugged in – so you can hear your own thoughts in there.”
7 WAYS TO TURN UP THE VOLUME ON YOUR INNER VOICE 1. CLEAR YOUR CALENDAR Make space in your day to slow down and think. 2. SOAK IN THE SILENCE Turn off the radio and tune into the quiet. 3. KEEP MOVING A healthy hit of endorphins can help you feel more balanced. 4. TRY FREE WRITING Let your inner monologue flow with a few minutes of journalling each day. 5. SEASONAL
ALLERGIES
SORTED With spring comes hayfever, but relief is at hand with this expert advice
EDWARD TANZIL Priceline Pharmacist
52
YOU SPRING 2021
S
pring may be a welcome change from the cold but it isn’t the easiest time of year for those who suffer from seasonal allergies, with all those new buds and blossoms meaning loads of extra pollen is in the air. “This increases the potential for allergy sufferers to have their body’s defences go into overdrive,” explains Priceline Pharmacist Edward Tanzil. Survive the season with this expert wisdom and a personalised kit with all your allergy necessities.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Demazin 12 Hour Nasal Decongestant Spray 20mL, $10.99.
RELIEF
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
Perennial allergies are caused by allergens present throughout the year, such as “dust, pet dander and hair,” says Edward. In contrast, seasonal allergies (aka hayfever) only occur during specific seasons. “They typically occur when there are significant changes in the weather that cause uplifts in specific allergens – like pollen, mould and even grass clippings.” The main symptoms of both forms are identical and are pretty self-diagnosable. They include sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, watery eyes and throat irritation.
STRENGTHEN YOUR DEFENCES
While there isn’t a lot you can do to physically prepare your body to fend off spring allergens, you can reduce your chances of exposure to triggers: 1. Be wary of windy days If the forecast is looking windy and/or high pollen counts are predicted, Edward suggests staying indoors if possible.

TARGETED
2. Mask up When getting out and about, wear a mask to help reduce your exposure to allergens. Edward also recommends using a mask when working in the garden or mowing to prevent pollen from entering your airways. 3. Spring-clean your space Keep your home clean and vacuum regularly to remove dust and hair follicles. “Be sure to also clean out your air-conditioning filters before spring and consider keeping your windows closed at home (and in the car) if you’re particularly sensitive to allergens,” says Edward. 4. Wash the day away When you get home in the evening, take a shower to remove any pollen that’s accumulated on you during the day. “Wash your sheets, clothes and towels more regularly, too,” says Edward.
Sometimes, your symptoms can be specific to one area. If that’s the case, instead of opting for antihistamine tablets, try a more targeted product instead.
ALLERGY ESSENTIALS
Beyond reducing your exposure to dust and pollen, one of the best ways to combat seasonal allergies is by keeping a few key products on hand. “Most hayfever and allergy products work fast, so the only thing stopping you from getting instant relief is having the right product handy,” says Edward. “Being prepared means there’s no delay to your recovery and you don’t need to suffer hayfever symptoms at all.”
IF YOU HAVE LOW-TOMODERATE SYMPTOMS:
“The quickest solution is non-drowsy antihistamine tablets,” says Edward. “They provide symptomatic relief within 15-30 minutes and work for up to 24 hours. They also have virtually no significant side effects and no long-lasting effects on the body.”
IF YOU HAVE MODERATETO-SEVERE SYMPTOMS:
“The best option is to use corticosteroid nasal sprays,” says Edward. “The sprays can provide some relief within minutes, but provide much better and longerlasting relief from hayfever and allergy symptoms than oral antihistamines, especially when used for more than three consecutive days.”
WATERY EYES: “If your particular hayfever symptom tends to be watery eyes, make sure you have an anti-allergy eye drop handy.” SNEEZING AND RUNNY NOSE: If you mainly suffer from sneezing, a runny nose or even nasal congestion, then consider a more specific anti-allergy nasal spray. ALL ABOUT SPF This season and beyond, navigate the sun protection aisle like a pro 54
YOU SPRING 2021
KRYSTAL KOULIS Priceline Beauty Advisor
T
he SPF shelves may seem a little overwhelming, but it’s important to get a handle on things so you can protect yourself and your family all year round. While there’s a seemingly limitless range of sun protection products available, it’s easy enough to find the right one for everyone under the sun. Firstly, there are two types of SPF formulas: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens soak into the skin where they absorb the sun’s rays and change them into heat, before dispersing them. Physical (or mineral) sunscreens sit on top of the skin, forming a barrier that deflects the rays. Both have pros and cons – chemical sunscreens tend to be lighter in texture and better suited to wearing under make-up
but they can be irritating for sensitive skin, while physical sunscreens are often thicker but generally gentler on the skin. And if you think sunscreen is a summer-only product, think again. In Australia, we cop some of the harshest UV levels in the world, due to our proximity to the equator. “We should wear sunscreen every day – UV rays don’t take a day off and neither should we. Apply it rain, hail or shine,” says Priceline Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Pharmacist Cobie McQueen. And yes, you still need to use sunscreen even if you’re wearing make-up. “Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Face Mist is a great way to reapply UV protection without disturbing your make-up, as it lightly shields over the desired area,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Krystal Koulis. It’s also vital to remember that sunscreen is just one piece of the sun protection puzzle. “Seek shade, wear sunglasses and a hat, and use physical blocks like umbrellas,” says Krystal. “These small changes you make now will have a noticeable impact on the health and quality of your skin in the future. It’s one of the best ways to slow down the ageing process.”

Like your skin, your hair is susceptible to sun damage. “Sun exposure can draw out moisture, leading to dry, brittle and, in extreme situations, heat-damaged hair,” says Krystal. The good news is there’s plenty you can do to protect your locks. When you’re in the sun, wear a widebrimmed hat and use a leave-in hair treatment with UV protection. Once you get home, help restore your hair’s moisture levels by deep conditioning with a hydrating mask.

MEET YOUR SPF MATCH FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Physical sunscreens are an ideal option as they’re formulated without irritating chemicals. Go for one that’s fragrance-free and make sure you do a patch test on an inconspicuous area 24 hours before using it – just to check you don’t react.
FOR DRY SKIN: Dry complexions can do with all the extra hydration they can get. To strengthen your skin barrier and keep your complexion feeling comfortable throughout the day, choose a sunscreen that has added moisturising ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Ocean Australia Face SPF 50+ Natural Sunscreen 75g, $18.99. A reef-safe cream that’s chemical filter-free and gentle on sensitive complexions.

Bondi Sands Hydra UV Protect SPF 50+ Face Lotion 50mL, $19.99. This chemical sunscreen deeply nourishes skin thanks to ethically sourced algae.
FOR OILY SKIN: Look for mattifying sunscreens that will help soak up excess sebum and keep your skin feeling fresh. People with congested skin will also benefit from non-comedogenic products – meaning they won’t clog the pores. La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Anti-Shine Dry Touch SPF 50+ 50mL, $31.95. With a chemical and physical filtering system, it’s designed to mattify skin while absorbing oil and sweat. Clear Skincare Sunscreen SPF 30 Plus 50g, $30. Suitable for oily and acne-prone skin, this oil-free chemical sunscreen sits beautifully under make-up.
Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Reapply frequently. It is important to wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear when exposed to the sun.

Your guide to achieving a salon-worthy colour refresh, thanks to Priceline Beauty Advisor and hairstylist Maggie Tosevski
You’ll need
• Your hair colour of choice • Tail comb • Sectioning clips • Hairdressing cape • Gloves • Vaseline • Mixing bowl • Dyeing brush • Stain remover and paper towel for any mishaps • Old towel
How to apply
1. Separate your hair into four sections using the comb. Start by parting hair down the middle, then across from the top parts of your ears. This should resemble a cross shape. Use sectioning clips to secure. 2. Put on your cape and gloves, and apply Vaseline around your hairline and ears to prevent staining the surrounding skin. 3. Mix together your colour and developer until the consistency is smooth and creamy.

4. Apply colour to your roots in each section, using the tail end of the comb to separate 1-1.5cm sections as you work. 5. Leave the colour to develop on the roots for 25 minutes. 6. Colour the rest of your hair, section by section, applying dye in small slices from the mid-lengths to ends. 7. Gently massage the colour through to ensure even coverage. 8. Allow the colour to develop for a further 15-20 minutes. 9. Use the stain remover for any dye marks left on your skin. 10. Wash hair using shampoo and conditioner before gently drying.

Shade selection
When choosing your new hair colour, you’ll want to keep your current shade top of mind. If you want to achieve a natural result, it’s best to stick within two shades of your own colour. On the back of the hair dye box, you’ll find a colour chart showing the results you can expect for each starting shade. “This helps guide you to the colours available when working with your existing hue,” explains Maggie. “If you have warm tones in your hair, then go with a cooler tone.” Meanwhile, those with cool-toned hair should opt for a warmer shade to liven up their complexion.

W
hen it comes to make-up, we all covet that ‘naturally’ lit-from-within finish. But like any masterpiece, the look actually begins with a well-prepped canvas. So first, you need to get your complexion looking its best by perfecting – and maintaining – a good skincare regimen. “Skincare is the best place to start. It’s the foundation for your make-up,” explains Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria Perez.
Go for glow Self-tanner is one of the easiest ways to add some life to your skin. If you’re short on time, there are plenty of rapid-working formulas available that will have you perfectly bronzed in just an hour or two. For the face, try a complexion-perfecting formula with added skincare benefits. 4. Bondi Sands 1 Hour Express Self Tanning Foam 200mL, $22.99. 5. St. Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Mousse 200mL, $59.99. 6. Tanologist Day Glow Hyaluronic Radiance SelfTan Serum 30mL, $19.99.

Exfoliating your face regularly will ensure dead surface cells are swept away, allowing fresh skin to shine through. Keep your lips smooth and soft with a regular polish to remove dry, flaky skin, too. 2. Burt’s Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub 7.1g, $12.99. 3. Flawless Finishing Touch Dermaplane Glow, $39.99.
6
Keep it clean Daily cleansing should form the backbone of your skincare routine. “Your foundation texture can only look as good as the skin underneath it, so cleansing will help to prevent clogged pores and remove any dust and grime that dulls natural radiance,” says Priceline Hair and Make-Up Director Sarah Laidlaw. 1. Cetaphil Face Daily Exfoliating Cleanser 178mL, $17.99.

Treat yourself Target individual skin concerns such as dryness, dullness or signs of ageing by choosing a serum matched to your needs. Retinol focuses on visible fine lines and wrinkles, niacinamide brightens and hyaluronic acid is a hydration hero. 7. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% 30mL, $9.90. 8. Consider this eye-enhancing hack Keep the glow going with Gloria’s go-to eye look. “For everyday wear, I use a bronzer or blush on the eyes. Take a blending brush and run a bit of bronzer or blush across the crease. This helps to define the eyes and tie the whole make-up look together as we see similar shades through the cheeks and eyes.” Finish with a little under-eye concealer, brow gel and mascara. To up the drama before a night out, magnetic false lashes provide extra definition instantly. 10. NYX Professional Makeup Control Freak Eyebrow Gel 8.5g, $9.95. 11. Ace the base To achieve that ‘your skin but better’ look, forget full-coverage foundation. Instead, after priming, use a sponge to apply a light to mid-level foundation, which will let your natural skin peek through. Or forgo foundation altogether and just stick to concealer.

Amp up the hydration When skin isn’t getting enough hydration, it can become flaky, dull and uneven in texture. To get the glow back, moisturise both morning and night (this applies to everyone, not just women!) and consider adding a facial oil on top if your skin is particularly dry. Sheet masks are also an excellent quick-fix before big events. “To really glow up your skin, use a hydrating mask targeted to your skin needs,” says Sarah.
