ummer is here. And with it comes the optimism of a new year on the horizon. A fresh diary, a clear calendar, a clean slate. I have a sense of hopefulness for 2022. We all know the past couple of years have left us feeling flat but the future does look bright. I’m wishing for a summer filled with long lunches, laughing with my loved ones, parties at home and hopefully a family holiday. It’s easy to get caught up in the ‘new year, new you’ tropes but I can’t help thinking that resolutions are a recipe for disappointment. I haven’t made New Year’s resolutions in years, instead opting to reset whenever I need throughout the seasons. If you do feel inclined to set the tone of 2022 with a few intentions, make them simple and achievable. Set yourself up for success. For instance, if I had to make a promise to myself, it would be to continue prioritising sleep. An early bedtime really is the best medicine. Harness the energy of the New Year (once you’ve indulged in ample relaxation) and make 2022 the year of good health – whatever that means to you. Homing in on the language around drinking and taking an everything-in-moderation approach opens up an argument for ditching the teetotal mentality. It’s no longer about all or nothing. It’s finding a happy medium, where you can enjoy a zero per cent cocktail one day and a wine with dinner the next. The rise of alcohol-free beer, wine and spirits takes away the fear of being labelled a killjoy on days you don’t want a drink. And for times when having a drink is not an option (pregnancy, recovering addicts, designated drivers), there’s finally an attractive alternative. Specialty stores and big-name retailers are making shelf space for low- and no-alcohol options. Forget the sparkling grape juice or Appletiser; we’re talking craft beers brewed with the same passion as your favourite IPA, botanical-infused ‘non-spirits’ that taste like a sunny afternoon in the garden and fullbodied reds. There’s even a bar dedicated to alcoholfree imbibing in Melbourne. Research shows that younger Australians are reducing their alcohol intake (a survey from the University of NSW Social Policy Research Centre shows 44 per cent of gen Z participants are drinking less due to the pandemic, while only one in five millennials, gen Xers and baby boomers have turned away from the bottle). With fewer opportunities to socialise and a penchant for wellness tropes, young adults are redefining youthful rebellion. As our behaviour towards alcohol continues to change, it becomes easier to embrace sober curiosity free from judgement. Heat stroke occurs when your body can’t regulate its core temperature. Laser hair removal is increasingly popular. “It’s a less invasive procedure that isn’t as painful [as waxing], doesn’t irritate the skin and delays the hair growth for a longer period of time,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria Perez. It quite literally gets to the root of the problem. But it takes commitment. You’ll need to carve out regular appointments at a Clear Skincare Clinic (usually eight to 12 sessions in six- to 12-week intervals) in your diary for the best result. The treatment area needs to be clean shaven (at least 24 hours before the procedure), free from makeup, sunscreen, deodorant or any products, and shouldn’t be tanned (fake or otherwise) for three-to-four weeks before your appointment. Laser hair removal works for all skin tones – what matters is how dark your hair is. “During the procedure, a laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment [melanin] in the hair,” explains Gloria. “Unfortunately it will not attract blonde, red or grey hairs.” However, if laser works for you, it can have long-term benefits as it leads to permanent hair reduction.
