Is there anything better than spring? Okay, maybe summer. But you know what we mean. With the mercury rising and a feeling of renewal in the air, spring represents a seasonal reset for many of us. As we emerge from winter, it’s time to rethink those comforting routines we found ourselves leaning into during the cooler months. But how? We’re so glad you asked! Our trusted Priceline Pharmacists and Beauty Advisors are here to help.
We’ll start with a topic close to our hearts at Priceline: beauty. Now is the perfect time to spring-clean your bathroom cabinet (page 30). There may be some antiques lurking in there! It’s also a time to reboot your makeup routine (page 8). According to Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw, it’s all about new shades and having fun. The mood-boosting benefits of a bold lip cannot be overstated.
When it comes to wellness, we’re thrilled to report that small, incremental workouts (page 60) make all the difference in building fitness and healthy habits, as well as boosting energy levels. We also asked our team of experts (who you’ll meet on the next page) to weigh in on everything from spring allergies to an inflamed complexion and signs of perimenopause. We leave no stone unturned to help you live your best life.
To that end, please don’t forget that we’re available to answer any and all questions in store. Remember, the word ‘awkward’ is not in our vocabulary.

Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw shares this season’s five most wearable trends, plus the products you need to achieve them
It’s never too late to play with colour, and spring is the ideal time to add more adventurous shades to our makeup kits. The trick to striking the right balance and feeling confident is to let your eyes take centre stage. Choose a pastel liner and etch it along your lash line, then add a few coats of your favourite lengthening mascara. Apply your base as normal and finish with a swipe of clear gloss on your lips. It’s the perfect new-season pick-me-up.
Try: NYX Professional Makeup Epic Wear Semi-Permanent Liquid Liner in Lilac, $18.95.
While smoky eyes are ideal for evenings, don’t be afraid to try shimmering bronze hues for a spring trend that’s perfect for daytime frivolity. The beauty of this look? You really can’t go wrong. Use a golden bronze as the base on your lids and build colour from there. Invest in a palette to give yourself more choice in your routine than a single shadow. There are no makeup rules when it comes to colour except to embrace it – express yourself and have fun doing it.
Try: Models Prefer Foil Finish Cream Eyeshadow in Gold Rush, $15.99.
This season’s lit-from-within complexion is flattering and easily within reach. Ensure your skin is well-hydrated before you even pick up a makeup brush, starting with a glowboosting primer that will not only give skin an ethereal finish but ensure your base lasts all day long. From there, apply a velvet-soft foundation where needed to perfect tone and then use a liquid highlighter to add glow to the high points of your cheeks and brow bone, plus the lightest touch down your nose and on the cupid’s bow.
Try: L’Oréal Paris Wake Up & Glow, Glow Mon Amour Highlight 17mL in Sparkling Love, $29.95.A red pout is the little black dress of your beauty arsenal. It’s a classic. The twist this season is to wear a splash of crimson lipstick against an otherwise minimalist makeup look. But that doesn’t mean you should just swipe on lipstick. The trick to pulling off this kind of bold colour is to pay extra attention when you apply foundation beforehand so you have even, glowing skin. Then just keep it simple with black mascara, groomed brows and a hit of blush.
Try: Maybelline Color Sensational Ultimatte Slim Lipstick in More Scarlet, $21.99.
Blush is often used as an accent for the face, giving cheekbones a hit of colour and brightening our complexions. This spring’s easiest – and prettiest –trend is to simply extend blush to sit a little higher on your cheekbones and then sweep it over your lids as well for maximum impact. To avoid overdoing it, start with a light dusting and then build from there. The desired effect is to give your skin a gorgeous, healthy glow.
Try: Revolution Blusher Reloaded in Rose Kiss, $9.Follow Priceline Beauty Advisor
Birri-Li Nicols’ three-step guide to perfecting spring nails
Pretty painted nails give an instant serotonin boost – and there’s no better time to embrace fun colours than spring. This year is all about pastel tones reminiscent of fresh florals and blue skies. No need to book an appointment at the salon – take this trend into your own hands with our step-by-step guide and the season’s shades to try.
Gorgeous nails start with a blank canvas. Begin your at-home mani by wiping away leftover varnish and excess oils using nail polish remover. Unless you’re sporting gel nail polish or a glitter look, opt for an acetone-free formula, which is less likely to dry out your nails. Then, gently buff each nail to smooth the surface for an even polish application. Use nail clippers and an emery board to cut and file your nails to the desired length and shape. To finish, apply a clear base coat, which protects your nails from staining and helps your manicure look better for longer.
This season we’re reaching for softer hues as we welcome the sunnier days of spring. From lemon to lavender, there are endless takes on the perfect springtime pastel, so let yourself be guided by the colours you feel most drawn to.
Ever the trendsetter, Pantone put purple back on our radars by selecting periwinkle as its 2022 Colour of the Year. Jump on the trend and embrace a pop of colour with a fun lilac shade, like Essie’s Sk8 with Destiny. If purple isn’t your thing, we’re also loving blue shades that remind us of clear skies, which will carry you through to summer. Step away from dark and icy tones and seek out a classic baby blue to bring the spring vibe. Our pick is Rimmel’s Tidal Wave Blue. Still not convinced? Keep it classic with a universally flattering pastel pink, which is our fave all year round. Sally Hansen’s
is the ultimate spring blush.
Apply your polish of choice with long, sweeping strokes from the base of your nail to the tip. But remember, less is more: don’t overload the brush. Aim for three strokes – one in the middle of the nail, then one on either side for flawless coverage. The pros recommend just two thin coats of your pretty pastel, ensuring your nails dry for around two minutes between applications. For a pictureperfect salon finish, dip a small angled makeup brush or cotton tip into your trusty nail polish remover and tidy up those edges, paying special attention to the cuticles. Prevent chipping with a clear top coat and allow to dry completely before flaunting your fresh manicured nails.
7.
Give your hands a post-winter pamper session with a hydrating hand and nail cream. Products that are rich in natural oils and nourishing ingredients will keep your hands feeling soft and supple all spring long.
9. Lanolips Lano Coconutter Hand Cream Intense 50mL, $16.99.
The spring sun can be harsh on your skin. Protect your hands from the elements and prevent early signs of ageing by applying a gentle sunscreen to the backs of your hands. Better yet, opt for a hand cream with SPF protection.
10. Natio Wellness Hand Cream SPF 15 100mL, $10.95.
Next time you’re shopping for hand sanitiser, look for a product that goes the extra mile. Formulas that are pH balanced and contain skin-friendly ingredients, such as vitamin E and aloe vera, are gentle and soothing for nails and hands.
11. Thankyou Hand & Surface Sanitiser
Antibacterial Grapefruit 50mL, $4.99.
Top up your top coat every few days to keep your polish looking shiny and fresh; a wellcared-for manicure should last 7–10 days.
Bid adieu to bad hair days
Sarah Laidlaw Priceline Hair & DirectorGot questions about achieving healthy locks? Every step in your routine is an opportunity to optimise hair health and make styling that much easier and faster. Whether it’s frizz, dullness or damage you’re worried about, Priceline Hair & Makeup Director Sarah Laidlaw has the answers.
Q: My hair is so damaged. What do I need to do to get back the shine?
Healthy hair starts in the shower. For luscious locks, reach for a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to promote repair while restoring softness. Lather up with formulas that promise to nourish tired tresses, leaving you with enviably sleek, super-shiny hair.
1. Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Repair Strengthening Shampoo 400mL $9. 2. Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Repair Strengthening Conditioner 400mL $9.
Q: I’ve tried many products to tame frizz and avoid tangles. What am I missing? Sometimes, simplicity is key. Step away from the product and go back to basics with a large paddle brush. The wide base of this type of brush enables it to detangle hair quickly and effectively. Plus, more bristles mean less stress to the hair and scalp with every brush.
Q: As I get older, my hair texture is changing and it’s starting to lose its shine. Any tips?
It’s completely normal for hair texture to change as you age but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with dullness. If you’ve noticed your hair is becoming coarser and duller with each birthday, reintroduce a youthful lustre with a shine serum. Ingredients like argan oil and keratin promote elasticity and shine, helping restore your hair to its former glory in a few drops.
Q: I don’t plan on embracing my natural colour any time soon. How do I make my hair feel stronger between salon appointments?
As much as we love freshly coloured salon hair, it’s no secret that regular treatments can weaken and damage our strands. Strengthen brittle, colour-damaged hair while maintaining that salon finish with a weekly hydration mask. Not only will it help maintain hair colour for longer but a dose of moisture will also restore the protective barrier of your hair.
Q: My thick, curly hair is so hard to style. How can I add moisture but also perfect my curls?
We’d like to introduce you to your new best friend: curl cream. Designed to tame unruly hair and leave you with sleek, defined curls, specifically formulated curl creams treat your hair, as well as helping style. Think frizz-free and photoready locks thanks to natural oils – and definitely no nasties.
6. Cake The Curl Friend Defi ning Curl Cream 177mL, $21.99.
Q: How do I protect my hair from daily heat styling? Please don’t suggest a break from my straightener.
There’s no need to ditch your beloved straightener just yet. Next time you switch on a heatstyling tool, give your hair a little TLC beforehand with a heat-styling protection mist. Look for products that promise to protect your hair against heat damage while leaving a soft and smooth finish. The best part? With the added protection, you can continue to use your hair straightener regularly without fear of fried strands.
Q: Spring rain is ruining my chances of good hair. Any advice?
Spring showers can wreak havoc on hair, transforming a slickedback updo into a frizzy disaster in seconds. A styling spray will ensure time spent taming your tresses is worth it. Cap off your hair-care routine with a spritz or two and enjoy immaculate hair come rain, hail or shine.
should I be looking for?
With so many heating tools on the market, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with choice. We suggest seeking out a few key features: adjustable heat settings, floating plates to allow for a more even heat distribution and, if you’re feeling fancy, infused ceramic plates to reduce frizz.

There’s no denying the allure of a perfectly curated shelfie, but when was the last time you sorted through your bathroom cabinet? Priceline Beauty Advisor Tom Nichols offers his tips for spring-cleaning your skincare
Aside from bringing peace of mind by decluttering shelves, it’s important to take stock of your toiletries yearly. “Products that contain active ingredients, like exfoliating acids, medicated treatments and SPF, lose their effectiveness if they sit on a shelf for too long,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Tom Nichols. It’s also worth being wary of contamination; products that you scoop out with fingers need regular replacing to ensure the formula stays untainted. “Better yet, a beauty drawer purge gives you the chance to refresh your skincare collection with some new seasonal staples,” Tom adds.
There are a few sure-fire ways to determine whether it’s time to toss. First, check the expiration date on the product’s packaging. This is particularly crucial for products like sunscreen, which is completely ineffective past its use-by. If the product doesn’t have a date listed, look for the PAO, otherwise known as the Period After Opening symbol. This is the open jar icon found on most cosmetic containers that lists the number of months after opening that the product can safely be used for.
Still can’t decide if it’s time to say goodbye? Check for signs that the product has gone off, namely a change in smell, colour or consistency. If you’re not sure, think back to when you purchased the product – if it was over a year ago, it might be time to get rid of it. And remember, natural, preservative-free products will expire sooner, so they should be the first to go.
Fortunately, a purge doesn’t necessarily mean polluting the planet. Priceline has partnered with innovative recycling company TerraCycle to reduce packaging waste. Every Priceline store in Australia now accepts glass and plastic containers, pumps, caps and droppers, and even your used beauty products like mascara tubes, eyeliners, lipsticks and palettes. Simply ensure your containers are free of leftover product and drop off at your local store to keep your empties out of landfill. To find out more about the recycling process visit the TerraCycle website.
Increase the longevity of your skincare faves by storing them in a cool, dry space away from the elements. Water, humidity and direct sun can fast-track the demise of your beauty products, so ensuring that your skincare is stored properly will keep it effective for longer. Plus, a refrigerated face mask makes for the ultimate spring skin pick-me-up if you’re suffering from a dry, irritated or tired complexion.

Understanding the transformative power of these ingredients gives you more control over how your skin looks and feels
Tom Nichols Priceline Beauty AdvisorBathroom vanities have become our very own skincare labs. Skin is reactive to stress, hormones, diet and different types of weather so it makes sense to alternate skincare formulas that provide different functions. “One week you may need to nurture your skin with calming creams, the next you might be tackling dullness or pesky breakouts,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Tom Nichols. These are the ingredients you should know about.
The fix: Niacinamide
Also known as vitamin B3, wonderworking niacinamide is an ideal ingredient to target sensitive skin that’s prone to excessive redness, irritation, flushing and blotchiness (possibly signs of a compromised skin barrier). Irritated skin may benefit from this water-soluble vitamin, as it quietly controls oil production and damage from environmental aggressors in the background to soothe and brighten. Think of it like car brakes for your skin, combatting hyperpigmentation by slowing down the transportation of melanin to the skin’s surface, and halting congestion and acne breakouts with its antibacterial properties, all while gently targeting inflammation-causing stressors. As niacinamide promotes the production of ceramides and elastin – which are both components of the skin’s barrier – it helps strengthen your skin’s natural protective shield so that it can better defend itself against outside irritants.

Spotting more spots than usual?
Consider a product containing benzoyl peroxide as its hero ingredient. Picture this bacteria-fighting concentrate striding into a party armed with bigboss energy and banishing unwanted gatecrashers, such as dead skin cells and excess sebum. Basically, benzoyl peroxide works by generating an oxygen-rich environment for your skin in which bacteria can no longer thrive. This means it’s effective at both killing existing bacteria and making it more difficult for new bacteria to climb the gates and get back in. With debris and sebum cast out, benzoyl peroxide then goes the extra mile to clear out lingering ‘bad vibes’ by acting as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and redness caused by pimples and acne. If you have particularly sensitive skin, try starting on a lower concentration and building up as your skin gets used to the active ingredient.
Learning to listen to your skin’s needs is the best way to adapt your routine; knowledge is power.
Hit rewind on visible signs of ageing with active ingredients that target your concerns.
The fix: AHAs and BHAs
Just like anything that often comes across as a little lacklustre and dull (think Grandma’s ‘special occasion’ silverware), your skin can also use a good polishing to restore its innate glow and vibrancy. Enter alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), a naturally occurring substance found in sugar cane and various fruits, and incorporated into a host of skincare products to help exfoliate and repair dry, ageing and sun-damaged skin. Glycolic acid – the AHA found in sugar cane –works by loosening the bond that holds together the top layers of dead skin cells to reveal softer and healthier-looking skin (not just for special occasions). Then there’s beta hydroxy acid (BHA), commonly known as salicylic acid, the oil-soluble counterpart to AHA. Also a brilliant exfoliator, BHA gets down and dirty to unclog pores and clear out dead cells, as well as promoting cell turnover for firm, plump and almost-good-as-new skin. And, just for an added cherry on top, with either AHA or BHA clearing excess build-up, you’re giving your skin the best chance to absorb additional moisturisers and treatments.
5. Clear Skincare Microdermabrasion Cream with Glycolic Acid 50g, $32.
6. NIP+FAB Purify Salicylic Fix Clay Mask 170mL, $39.99.
The fix: Hyaluronic acid
You’ve heard it uttered around the hallways, whispered at the water cooler and shouted from the rooftops: hyaluronic acid for the win. If ever there was a skincare equivalent to player of the match, this super-duper hydrating ingredient is it. Naturally occurring in skin, one gram of this sugar molecule
can reportedly hold up to six litres of water, making it a no-brainer essential to combat dehydration. Although this dreamy molecule already exists in our skin, we can always use a little top-up, as outside and inside forces work hard to strip our skin of its natural hydration levels, leaving it in a drought-like state some days. Creams, moisturisers and serums containing this ingredient will help your skin slow its external water loss and maintain elevated levels of moisture, keeping your face looking and feeling supple, soft and, most importantly, hydrated. Pass the word around –hyaluronic acid is here to stay.

The fix: Retinol
For something a little more back to the future, retinol is your go-to ingredient. A derivative of vitamin A, retinol works to speed up collagen production, as your natural reserves deplete over time, and smooth and refine skin texture –essentially helping reverse visible signs of ageing. Fine lines need not burden you and wrinkles can take a hike because retinol’s turn-back-the-dial properties help improve skin elasticity, as well as increasing the rate of skin-cell turnover and renewal. The results? More even skin tone and texture, refined-looking pores and a fresher complexion. When it comes to this hardworking ingredient, a little bit goes a long way: use a pea-sized amount once or twice a week to start and slowly increase to every other day and then every day, as your skin builds tolerance.

Whether you’re new to self-tanning or could hold a masterclass on achieving a faux glow, these five easy steps to perfecting a streak-free, natural-looking tan are worth knowing. Along with the latest formulas and bases that can be customised to suit your complexion and skill level, you’ll be spring-ready in no time.
The secret to avoiding a streaky and patchy tan starts long before you slather on any formula. The trick is to exfoliate your skin the day before you plan on applying the self-tan. Use a body scrub that includes a physical exfoliant, such as sea salt, to buff away dead skin cells and flaky skin, paying special attention to your knees, ankles and elbows. And remember that any hair removal, be it laser, shaving or waxing, needs to happen at least one day before you apply tanner to avoid any sort of irritation.
After cleansing and exfoliating, it’s time to hydrate. This will ensure an even base for your self-tan. The best time to moisturise is immediately after a shower, applied to towel-dried skin.
SibbelGolden days mean golden skin. Priceline Beauty Advisor Chloe Sibbel shares her top tips and tricks for a glowing complexion
Choose a lightweight formula and apply it mostly to the extra-dry parts of your body where colour can build up, like knees, ankles and elbows.
For beginners, opt for a gradual tanner or tanning drops, which can be added to your favourite body lotion. If you’re a more seasoned self-tanner, go for tanning lotions, creams, mousses or foams. Most brands will offer light, medium, dark and ultra dark, so you can choose which shade is best for you. Self-tanners packed with skincare ingredients are a good choice if you have dry skin. Look out for coconut water, hyaluronic acid or glycerin, all of which will ensure your skin feels soft and supple once your colour develops.
To ensure your formula delivers a smooth and even finish, use a tanning mitt or brush to apply the tan. Whether you’re using a serum, cream or mousse, the silky, soft fibres of a mitt or brush help buff the product into your skin, and absorb the excess. Even better, you avoid getting crazy orange hands. To keep your tanning tool in good condition for your next application, rinse it with warm water after each use.
Made a mistake or need to remove your tan?
There are a number of removers and erasers (and no, we don’t mean lemon juice and baking soda) formulated with oils and ingredients that break down tanning pigments and will leave your skin soft, smooth and tan-free.

“Don’t forget protection! Most self-tanning formulas don’t include SPF so your skin won’t be safeguarded from the sun.”
Tanning the face can be a little daunting so you may prefer to match your complexion to your newly sun-kissed body with a darker foundation shade or bronzer. The other option is to apply a small amount of the body formula across your face – after your skin has been prepped, of course. You can also use a facial spray, serum or tanning drops that include hydrating skincare ingredients. Start with light coverage and build your colour over a few days.
“Well-hydrated skin means your glow lasts longer and fades evenly. Switch from a lightweight moisturiser to a heavier, creamier one with ingredients like ceramides, aloe vera and vitamin E between applications.”
We all know that there’s nothing softer than a newborn’s skin, but during the transitional months, even bub’s skincare routine needs a spring refresh.
The bright sun and lingering cool air at the start of the season are a particularly drying combo. A gentle cream, like P’ure Papayacare Papaya Moisturising Lotion, will help restore hydration after bath time, leaving baby’s skin soft and balanced. “With bub now less rugged up, hydration is more important than ever,” says Priceline Pharmacist Petro Vlachos.
1. P’ure Papayacare Baby Papaya Moisturising Lotion 150mL, $14.99.
Petro advises, “A bath is essential for cooling babies down and gently removing sunscreen, dirt and sweat from their skin.” Water alone can irritate the skin and strip it of moisture but using a nourishing bath oil will help cleanse and soothe. Look for fragrance-free, pH-balanced formulas, like Ego’s QV Baby Bath Oil, which ticks all of our boxes.
2. Ego QV Baby Bath Oil 500mL, $15.99.
Longer days and daylight savings can disturb your little one’s sleep routine. After a day of play, wind down with your bub and soothe their skin with a gentle massage. Petro suggests using Weleda’s Calendula Baby Oil to “help ease bub into dreamland, ushering in a better night’s sleep for the whole family”.
3. Weleda Calendula Baby Oil Fragrance Free 200mL, $26.99.
Petro says, “Baby’s skin is far more sensitive than ours, making it prone to irritation from the elements.” An all-rounder, like Bunjie’s Nip It in the Bub Nappy & Barrier Cream, can be used topically on cranky skin while also being a nappy-bag staple all year round.
4. Bunjie Nip It in the Bub Nappy & Barrier Cream 90g, $10.99.
“SPF is an essential part of infant skincare” says Petro. A mineral sunscreen, such as Wotnot Naturals Natural Sunscreen, provides sun protection while also being gentle enough for sensitive skin. For optimal coverage, reapply every one to two hours and make sure to pair with a hat and protective clothing. “For babies younger than six months, it is best to avoid direct sun exposure altogether,” says Petro.
5. Wotnot Naturals Natural Sunscreen SPF 30 100g, $16.
Petro suggests keeping on-the-go essentials, like Gentle Cleansing Wipes from Little Eyes, to hand. Suitable for newborns as well, these pH-balanced, hypoallergenic wipes will safely cleanse and soothe your infant’s eyes at the first signs of hay fever – perfect for spring adventures.
6. Little Eyes Gentle Cleansing Wipes 30 Wipes, $15.99.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreens are only one component of sun protection. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent use and re-application in accordance with directions is required for effective sun protection.
This is an emotional topic for teenagers, as well as for the parents helping them navigate new skincare routines on top of the low self-esteem that can develop when skin starts to break out.
Then for the good news: there are plenty of products that can help ease skin discomfort and help clear breakouts. “These products will also work to prevent future spots by clearing blocked pores and keeping skin clean,” says Petro. “The only catch is that compliance matters when it comes to these formulas working; your teen needs to develop good daily habits, as many of these ingredients have a cumulative effect. That means the more you use them, the better the results.”
A simple first step – and something that will hopefully become a great lifelong habit –is cleansing skin. Petro suggests looking for a gentle formula containing benzoyl peroxide, which helps reduce acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface. Your teen should apply cleanser to their face using lukewarm water and then rinse well.
The formula that follows should be a treatment serum or lotion that helps clear pores and prevent further breakouts.
Consider one that contains salicylic acid, which removes excess oil and exfoliates dead skin cells from the surface to avoid
blocked pores that lead to spots. Some lotions or gels also contain skin-hydrating ingredients to counteract the dryness that your teen may experience. And some formulas combine both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
Now for the tough part: it’s only natural to pick at the spots but Petro’s advice is to urge them not to, as it may lead to infection and even scarring. “Spot-treatment gels or pimple patches are a better bet, as they help dry out the offending spot and gently clear skin,” he advises. “Likewise, harsh scrubs might feel like a good solution for a frustrated teen but they will most likely lead to irritation, inflammation and redness.”
If your teen has been maintaining a skincare regimen designed to help target and clear acne but the problem persists, then it may be time to visit your doctor for a topical prescription to treat an underlying infection. And don’t forget that if you have questions or don’t have the balance right in their skincare routine, our Pharmacists and Beauty Advisors are always available to help answer their (and your) questions.
According to Priceline Pharmacist Petro Vlachos, the first step is to simply talk to them about it. Your teen’s spotty skin should not be the elephant in the room but something to be gently discussed. There may be a little pushback but that’s to be expected. Make sure your teen understands that breakouts are mostly a normal result of hormonal fluctuations, though hygiene and genetics can play a role, too.1. Azclear Action Medicated Lotion 25g $15.99. 2. Formula 10.0.6 Overnight Spot Minimising Patches 4 Pack, $6.99. 3. Biorè The Original Deep Cleansing Pore Strips, $6.99. 4. Antipodes Healthy Clear Skin Set, $48.
Refresh skin and add glow with products that pack a hydrating punch. From swapping out your daily face cream to introducing an overnight mask or eye cream, now is the time to up the ante. Radiant skin is but a few swipes of moisturerich products away.

Reduce suffering from seasonal symptoms with these allergy busters
Seasonal allergies are a common complaint that really take the shine off springtime. According to Priceline Pharmacist Wendy Stojanovic, the best form of prevention is often avoidance. “If possible, stay indoors on windy days and keep doors and windows closed,” she says. “And try to avoid any unnecessary gardening, particularly in the morning, when pollen counts are high.”
“If symptoms are particularly bothersome, a daily dose of an antihistamine may be required to maintain good control during the spring season,” says Wendy. Most brands will provide fast relief from sneezing, a runny nose and watery, itchy eyes, and can be taken daily as a preventative.
1. Telfast 180mg 60 Tablets, $39.99. 2. Demazin Allergy + Hayfever Relief 60 Tablets, $29.99.
3. Claratyne Hayfever & Allergy Relief 10mg 60 Tablets, $44.99.
For stubbornly blocked sniffers, try a corticosteroid nasal spray to reduce inflammation in the nose, stop excessive sneezing and clear blockages. “Saline sprays and nasal washes can also help by flushing out allergens and removing excess mucus,” says Wendy. “Nasal washes can be purchased as a kit with a squeeze bottle and require the addition of freshly boiled and cooled water to pre-packaged saline sachets.”
4. Nasonex Allergy 2 x 140 Sprays, $39.99.
For sufferers of itchy eyes, drops containing naphazoline will provide instant relief. Eye drops with this ingredient help combat redness, puffiness, itching and watering by blocking histamines and temporarily narrowing blood vessels in the eye. If you have dry eyes, lubricating drops can help flush away irritants that exaggerate allergic symptoms.
Awareness about perimenopause – the years leading up to menopause – is on the rise but there are probably plenty of things you don’t yet know about this transitional period
Most of us have heard about menopause. But if you haven’t reached an age when perimenopause can start to have an effect, how can you prepare for it? And if you have a feeling perimenopause is on the horizon, how can you best take care of yourself? We now know a lot more about perimenopause and its impact than in previous centuries when menopause was unofficially called ‘women’s hell’ or ‘the death of sex’. This time of life was also blamed for health problems from gout and epilepsy to hysterical fits and nymphomania. In the 19th century, women who went to a doctor for the symptoms of perimenopause may have been given leeches to help ease congestion in the genital area. Thankfully, understanding and treatment have come a long way since.
“Women usually go through perimenopause in their forties and on average it lasts between four and six years. But for some women it lasts one year and for others it can last up to 10 years,” says Dr Elizabeth Farrell, gynaecologist and medical director of Jean Hailes for Women’s Health.
Perimenopause occurs when your ovaries start to run out of eggs, which disrupts the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. This leads to a change in periods – they can become heavier, lighter, shorter or longer and some months you won’t have one at all.
As well as erratic periods, common symptoms include: hot flashes, disrupted sleep, depression and vaginal dryness. But researchers believe women can experience a range of other issues, including hair loss and something called ‘burning mouth syndrome’, where women feel a tingling sensation in their lips, gums and tongue.
According to Priceline Pharmacist Jenna Cormack, other symptoms include night sweats, tender breasts, itchy skin or skin that feels like ants are crawling on it, tiredness, migraines, mood changes and weight gain as your metabolism slows down.
“During perimenopause, hormone levels may be low one day and within the normal range the next. There’s currently no test that can determine when menopause will occur,” says Elizabeth.“If you’re experiencing symptoms like hot flashes and irregular periods, you are likely going through perimenopause.”
Some women report becoming easily distracted, losing concentration and forgetting names and small details. “The hormonal swings and roundabouts of perimenopause may be partly to blame,” says Jenna. “Brain fog may also be due to disrupted sleep and feeling stressed and anxious.”
Finding ways to manage stress and being kind to yourself when you get distracted can help. Take a break and start focusing on what you were saying or doing again. Regular exercise is also believed to help boost the hippocampus – the part of the brain involved in memory and learning.
Oestrogen and progesterone are important in the growing phase of hair – they help it grow faster and last longer. When these hormones start to decline, hair becomes thinner, grows more slowly, breaks more easily and we can lose more of it.
Recent research from Thailand found that more than half of women experience hair thinning later in life, called female pattern hair loss. And as their crowning glory thins, women report increasing rates of low self-esteem, depression and anxiety.
Perimenopause can be associated with physical symptoms that affect interest in sex. Some women experience vaginal dryness and simply don’t feel like sex. Because it’s physically uncomfortable or painful, intimacy isn’t as enjoyable.
Your GP or women’s health specialist can offer options to help overcome intimacy issues. Vaginal dryness that causes painful sex can be treated with vaginal oestrogen, for example.
Some 20 per cent of women have no menopausal symptoms and find the experience easy. “Sixty per cent have mild to moderate symptoms and the rest have symptoms so severe they significantly interfere with daily life,” says Elizabeth.
“You don’t have to put up with symptoms. The most effective treatment is menopausal hormone therapy or MHT. There are also other treatments including natural therapies and medications – such as the pill. It’s important to eat well, be physically active, not smoke or drink too much alcohol and to take care of your emotional wellbeing.”
A vital piece of bodily equipment that’s often overlooked, your pelvic floor can lead to some embarrassing situations if neglected. Here’s how to prioritise and care for this group of muscles
Just like other muscles in our body that benefit from regular maintenance and care, so does our pelvic floor –the muscles that run front to back from the pubic bone to the tailbone and from side to side between the sitting bones, forming a thick hammock that supports the bowel, bladder and uterus. Over time and with bodily stress, these muscles can weaken, leading to potential incontinence and prolapse, meaning it can become harder to hold on to wee, poo or wind.
Enter Kegels: exercises that help strengthen the pelvic floor. Easy to do and uphold (think a couple of minutes per day while watching TV), the benefits of Kegels for your pelvic floor are plentiful.
Up to 38 per cent of Australian women and 10 per cent of men are affected by urinary incontinence, according to the Continence Foundation of Australia. But the myth that this issue only affects older women is just that, a myth. More than half of the women who have difficulty holding their wee are under the age of 50. About 10 per cent of women experience faecal incontinence and some 44 per cent of those women are under 50.
Pelvic organ prolapse can also be a problem when weakened muscles lead to one or more of the pelvic organs bulging into the front wall of the vagina, or the uterus dropping down into the vagina.
“Our pelvic floor muscles are tucked away so we don’t think about them as much. We take them for granted and aren’t educated about how important they are until something goes wrong,” says Sonia Scharfbillig, an Adelaidebased pelvic floor physiotherapist.
“When something does go wrong, women can be too embarrassed to ask for help, but it’s a completely natural chat to have with your GP who can talk through remedies with you.”
For women, pelvic floor muscles can be affected by pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.
“The pelvic floor muscles are made to stretch for pregnancy and childbirth and often bounce back to normal position, but for some women the excessive stretching means they need help to get those muscles back into place,” says Sonia.
As oestrogen levels drop during menopause, this can also weaken the pelvic floor. “Age has an effect, too,” says Sonia. “As we get older, we lose elasticity in our connective tissues and we lose strength in our pelvic floor muscles. People who have had longterm chronic constipation or chronic coughing due to issues like asthma or bronchitis can also have weaker muscles because huge pressure goes down through our tummy when we cough or strain to go to the toilet.”
around your anus or back passage. When you try to stop the flow of urine you are using the pelvic floor muscles around the front part of the pelvic floor,” explains Sonia. So, imagine you are trying to hold on to urine or to avoid passing wind – those muscles that you can feel as you tense are your pelvic floor. Now that you know you’re using the right muscles, it’s time to do some Kegels.
Simply squeeze the muscles you just located and hold for five seconds, making sure that you keep breathing throughout, and then relax and repeat. Do this 10 to 15 times, but don’t tighten your stomach or thigh muscles while you squeeze.
Aim to do a set of these exercises each day when you wake up, once during the day while sitting at your desk or in your car and then do a final set before bed. Stick to three sets per day and be patient as it can take as long as six weeks before you start to see any improvement.
Not every woman has a weak pelvic floor – some women have muscles that are too tight.
“This issue can arise for women who have regular discomfort around the pelvic area due to endometriosis, bladder pain syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome,” says Sonia. “They can end up experiencing pelvic pain because their muscles are always on guard and can’t relax. This can make sex and using tampons uncomfortable and pap smears become painful.”
Just as exercising our arm muscles makes them stronger, working pelvic floor muscles makes them more effective, too. The first step is to get familiar with exactly where your pelvic floor muscles are and what they feel like so you exercise the right area.
“When you hold on to wind, you contract your pelvic floor muscles
Treatment focuses on relaxing the muscles with mindfulness, deep breathing and yoga stretches. Wands or vaginal dilators that can gently desensitise the muscles can help.
“If you are having issues, see your GP or a pelvic health physiotherapist who will be able to help you find the best exercises and make sure you are doing those correctly,” says Sonia. “If something isn’t right, don’t suffer in silence. Get it checked.”
“As we get older, we lose elasticity in our connective tissues and we lose strength in our pelvic oor muscles.”
Want to get up in the morning feeling re-energised and ready to face the day ahead? Then don’t get too stressed about sleep…
We’re all aware of how pertinent sleep is for good physical and emotional health, but in an ironic twist of circumstance, stressing about sleep can make it even harder to get that vital shut-eye. “There are people who have the ‘I’ll sleep when I’m dead’ attitude. They keep busy and squeeze sleep in where they can,” says Hailey Meaklim, a sleep psychologist at Monash University in Melbourne. “Then there are those who know the importance of sleep and make time for it, as well as following good sleep hygiene, but they worry about getting enough of it. That creates pressure that actually makes it more difficult to fall asleep at night.”
According to the Sleep Health Foundation, about 40 per cent of Australian adults don’t get enough sleep, leading to a groggy and sluggish wake-up. The reasons for a bad night’s sleep can range from simply not making enough time for bed to stress and clinical problems like obstructive sleep apnoea, where you briefly stop and start breathing again during the night.
“About 15 per cent of people wake and still feel tired in the morning,” says Hailey. “Maybe you’re only allowing six hours for sleep when you need seven or eight hours. If you’re depressed or anxious, that will also impact how well you sleep and how tired you feel when you wake. People who are stressed lie in bed and overthink things and a lot of mental energy goes into that. It’s hard to fall asleep when you have so much on your mind.”
Pregnancy and menopause can leave women waking up feeling like they never went to bed. “Growing a little human takes energy, which can cause exhaustion. Women can also experience reflux when they lie down, or the baby might kick and the woman might struggle to find a comfortable position,” says Hailey.
“We also see a spike in women seeking
sleep help during the years leading up to menopause. Hormone levels change and women can experience night sweats or hot flushes. This can also be a busy time for women with work, kids at home and ageing parents – all possible stressinducing and sleep-disrupting things.”
If you feel tired first thing in the morning, there are tricks that can improve your slumber. Firstly, set aside time for a winddown routine, as well as a regular time to go to sleep every night. Routines send our body a signal that we are getting ready for sleep. “Our brain doesn’t have an on-off switch, it’s more like a dimmer switch. So slow things down an hour before bed by putting away electronic devices, dimming lights, brushing your teeth, having a warm bath and doing something quiet, like reading,” says Hailey, noting that if you start to feel sleepy you should go to bed.
Try limiting the devices you have in the bedroom. Tech devices emit blue light that stops the release of a natural hormone called melatonin, known as the sleepy hormone. “Leave your phone charging in the kitchen. It can also be tempting to check messages or go down a YouTube wormhole when you really want to sleep,” says Hailey.
If you go to bed and toss and turn, get up and do something relaxing – read more of your book or listen to calming music.
“If we stay in bed, our fight or flight system switches on,” explains Hailey. “Instead get out of bed and wait until you feel some sleepy cues again.”
“Our brain doesn’t have an on-off switch, it’s more like a dimmer...”
If you put off exercising because you can’t find the time, snack-sized workouts might be the solution
Jenna Cormack Priceline PharmacistWork, study, kids, homework, afterschool sports, cooking, cleaning, paying bills, visiting ageing parents, staying in touch with friends and walking the dog… in the busyness of everyday life, it’s all too easy to let exercise slip to the bottom of (and sometimes off) your to-do list. Consider, then, the micro-workout: a bout of high-intensity physical activity that lasts from about four to 12 minutes. “Short but effective, these kinds of workouts are becoming increasingly popular with time-poor Aussies who don’t want keeping fit and healthy to take too long,” says Priceline Pharmacist Jenna Cormack. It’s like a snack that fuels you when a sit-down meal would take too long. And far from being another fitness fad, there’s some sound scientific evidence that supports the effectiveness of micro-workouts.
“You can do a spin class for 45 minutes or do a 12-minute workout and get similar health outcomes,” says Chris Alexander, exercise physiologist and spokesperson for AUSactive. “There’s plenty of science now that shows that short bursts of activity – at the right intensity – deliver similar benefits to a longer workout.”
The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity each week. But for many people, work and family commitments make this target a challenge. The good news is that highintensity micro-workouts may be just as effective. One international study in 2021 found that for people with type 2 diabetes, as little as four minutes of highintensity exercise three times a week improved blood sugar levels, reduced unhealthy fat in the liver and boosted cardiorespiratory fitness.
The beauty of shorter workouts is that you can leverage the fitness benefits of exercise, without the additional strain longer workouts might put on your body. A Norwegian study also found people in their seventies who huffed and puffed their way through short bursts of high-intensity exercise had better aerobic fitness and mental and physical health than people who did less intense exercise for longer.
The workouts included a 10-minute warm-up and then four minutes of strenuous cycling or jogging followed by four minutes of rest. The cycling or jogging and resting cycle was repeated four times. But the key is to work hard and push yourself during the intense part of the workout. “By high intensity we mean training that gets you really sweaty and out of breath,” said professor Dorthe Stensvold from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Micro-workouts are great for brain health, too. A study from the University of Queensland found snack-sized highintensity exercise increases blood flow to the brain that may help reduce the risk of mental diseases, like dementia. “The benefits of exercise on brain function are thought to be caused by the increase in blood flow and shear stress (the frictional force of blood along the lining of the arteries) which occurs during exercise,” says researcher Dr Tom Bailey. “Everyone is lacking in time but you can always get up 12 minutes earlier in the morning or find five or 10 minutes during your day. If you dedicate only one per cent of your week to exercise then you are on the right track,” says Chris.
If you have existing injuries or haven’t exercised for a while, see your GP first and start with a light workout, only increasing the intensity as you get fitter. “Do a short workout at any time when you’re motivated and it’s convenient,” says Chris.“Many people find it best to have their runners and water bottle by their bed so they can get into it first thing in the morning but there’s no best time for a micro-workout – do it whenever you’re ready to go.”
Cycle: try a 40 second sprint, followed by three minutes of easy riding and repeat four times.
Jump: try 30 seconds of star jumps or step ups, followed by two minutes of walking and repeat five times.
Squat: try 30 seconds of body-weight exercises, like squats or lunges, followed by three minutes of walking and repeat three times.
Skip: try one minute of skipping, followed by one minute of rest. Repeat, working up to 12 minutes per session.
Q: My asthma seems worse in spring. How can I prevent this?
Potential asthma triggers, such as pollen, mould and grass, are rife in spring, so it’s not surprising that many asthmatics experience a flare-up in these months. To keep symptoms in check, be sure to take your prescribed medication all season, even if you’re feeling well. Your Priceline Pharmacist can check that you’re using your inhaler correctly and make modifications, like the inclusion of a spacer, to ensure maximum efficacy.
Q: I’m determined to lose weight but I don’t know where to start. Do you have any tips?
Spring – the season of renewal – is a great time to make positive changes to your diet and fitness regimen. I suggest introducing protein meal replacements in addition to lower-calorie meals and
increased physical activity. To maintain a balanced diet of adequate fibre and hydration, it’s important to consume these in conjunction with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Q: I always suffer from dry skin in winter but symptoms get even worse in spring. How can I stop the itch?
Changes in weather can cause dry, sensitive skin – and with sunnier days comes increased exposure to UV rays, sweat and allergy triggers, like grass, so it’s normal for your skin to feel a little scratchy in spring. Soothe irritation with a hydrating body wash, avoiding products with added fragrance or alcohol. Double-down on moisture by applying body lotion or oil each day to ensure smooth, itch-free skin.
2. QV Gentle Wash 1kg, $20.99.
Q: I brush my teeth twice a day but can’t get rid of stubborn stains. Any advice? Even with good hygiene our teeth can appear yellow or discoloured. This is often due to the foods and drinks we consume: think tea, coffee and red wine. Try using a targeted whitening treatment to help reduce staining and return your teeth to pearly white status.
3. Oral-B 3DWhite Whitening Emulsions 25g, $59.99.
Q: The weather is warming up but I’m too embarrassed by my cracked heels to wear sandals. What can I do?
After months in socks, slippers and closed-in shoes, sandal weather can bring a spring awakening for cracked heels. The best way to treat dry skin is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Establish a good routine to avoid serious concerns. Gently exfoliate rough or dry skin with foot-care tools and look to hydrating balms and masks to add moisture back to parched skin.
Chloe Sibbel Priceline Beauty AdvisorQ: No matter how much hairspray I use, my hair seems to fall flat as soon as I leave the house. Do you have any tips for volume that stays?
To maximise bounce, use shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair type (especially if you have fine strands) and invest in a volume-boosting spray. Thickening formulas lift hair from the root without weighing it down. To help lift your locks even more and really seal the deal, try a heat tool that will set your hair like a blow-dry brush.

Q: I want to buy my partner a new spring scent. What fragrance notes should I look for?
Spring is perfect for embracing fresh fragrances. Think fruit and floral scents like orange, apple and geranium, as well as earthy undertones, such as tonka bean and cedarwood. Consider the cologne he already wears and follow your nose (quite literally) to determine what he might like. It’s hard to go past the classics: Versace, Guess and Montblanc offer vibrant scents we love.

Q: I want to make my eyes pop with a classic winged eyeliner but don’t know how. Can you help?
When it comes to mastering any new makeup look, practice makes perfect. The best way to nail winged eyeliner is to make an outline of the cat-eye shape first by tapping tiny dots along your lash line with the very tip of your liner. Then go back and connect them. A liquid eyeliner will glide on, leaving you with a bold graphic look that will stay all day.

You can be quick to react, Aries, and that fiery personality can sometimes land you in hot water. However, your proactive nature isn’t all bad. Tackling issues as they arise is the best way to find your way through problems. Not one to dwell, you believe that honesty is the best policy. Be your authentic self – just let your colleagues, partner and family know that you prefer to address things headon so you don’t come across as too brash or abrasive, which some people might find polarising.

Physical touch is a Taurean’s love language. Be it a hug, squeeze of the hand or high-five, you’re clued in to how even subtle gestures can offer comfort and support. In the same way that you shower friends or lovers with adoration, you can be quick to withdraw or withhold your affection if you are experiencing resentment. The bull can be stubborn, after all. You’re a great listener but make sure you’re being heard, too, so that you don’t end up feeling bitter.

Little miss chatterbox: Geminis like to work through their thoughts aloud, repeating a point until they know that everyone in the room has heard it. While this can be exhausting for those closest to you, the twins thrive among wide, diverse groups of friends who are always up for listening to a story (or two). Naturally curious, you sometimes toe the line between good conversation and gossip. And while your quick wit is always appreciated, it’s worth upping your active listening skills to make sure everyone has an opportunity to be heard.
June 21–July 22
You have a reputation for being a bit of a cry baby but your emotional expressions aren’t always bad; tears are as often filled with joy as they are sadness. You know it’s not worth bottling up your feelings and, to be honest, it can be refreshing to get things off your chest. Cancerians are all ears when friends, family or colleagues come to them with problems. The trick is in finding a way to not assert your own emotions on the situation too heavily.
July 23–August 22
Ever the life of the party, your split focus can leave some people feeling disengaged. But it’s a Leo’s desire for constant connection that people love most. Just remember to put time in with your nearest and dearest when they need it. And, while it may feel counterintuitive to your social nature, you don’t need to be liked by everyone. Your artistic tendencies lead to an expressive communication style; you’re more inclined to write a poem than simply send a text.
When it comes to communicating our emotions, everyone is different. But understanding how your personality traits affect your ability to get your point across can help ensure your voice is heard – at work, in your relationships and with family.
August 23– September 22
Virgos are stimulated by conversations with substance. Not one for small talk, you’re more likely to be found having a heated debate or dissecting your favourite book. But your analytical side has you taking time to absorb what’s being said before giving comments or advice. Tuned into body language and social cues, you find gestures speak volumes. It’s vital that your partner and friends pay attention to your motions to understand your sensitive side.
October 23–November 21
December 22–January 19
The calm Capricorn is a well-learned listener with admirable patience. But your somewhat convoluted approach to conversations (read: you like to ask a lot of questions) can leave people wishing you just said what was on your mind. You find it easy to be completely honest, sometimes brutally so. But the generosity you show towards others demonstrates that your intentions are always good.
September 23–October 22
Putting pen to paper is the safest way for Libras to articulate thoughts. Helping to find clarity in emotions, writing things down (in a text, email or letter) also avoids in-person confrontation, which can throw this generally well-balanced sign off kilter. Sharing small moments from your day, like a funny video or even your #OOTD, helps you feel connected to those around you. Social media is a great way to keep up with what’s happening in everyone’s lives.
Scorpios might just be the best communicators of the zodiac. Known for your sting, it’s that killer instinct that can help you connect with people on all levels. Both verbal and non-verbal cues are important, as you know all five senses inform our view of the world. You may manifest your inner feelings a little too much sometimes, but your loved ones should know that nothing you say comes without careful curation, for better or worse.
November 22–December 21
Independent and a bit mysterious, you can be a little hard to read. Sagittarians prefer to chat face-to-face, especially if there is a concern to address, as you like to analyse reactions before you respond. With a tendency to not engage with things that don’t serve you, sometimes you can leave people to read between the lines. But there is a sincerity to your communication style that people admire; you’re the wise owl that friends gravitate towards for advice. You just need to remember to have tact with your insights.
January 20–February 18
Clear and direct, Aquarians tend to try to find perspective in situations before speaking. Concerned with the collective experience, you take an egalitarian view on social issues. And as a fan of metaphors, you enjoy intellectual and, at times, abstract conversations. This shows your sign’s cerebral qualities –but don’t forget to get out of your own head sometimes.
February 19–March 20
Sometimes silence speaks louder than words. As a water sign, Pisces are usually keen to go with the flow but you can be overwhelmed by your emotions. Soft-hearted and a little shy, it can take some coaxing to get you out of your shell but once you’re out, communication is easy. Feel your feelings and teach your partner and friends to decipher your opinions so they can get to know the real you.
