Fashion people usually love winter – the coats, the boots, the layering. But I’m a summer baby, through and through. I’ll take floaty dresses and barely there sandals over heavy jackets and knits any day. Undone, vacay hair and glowing skin is my beauty happy place. Give me a holiday to shop for and I am in heaven. Even swimwear, once the most torturous part of any summer shopping spree, has become relatively painfree in 2019, with high-tech fabrics and clever cuts and shapes (even sleeves!) to suit every body. This issue of JONES has our edit of all the beach bags, floppy hats, sunnies, breezy dresses, swimsuits, sunscreens, shorts and travel cases you’ll ever need. Read it with a Golden Gaytime in hand and prepare for the summer of your dreams. Enjoy the issue,

RADAR The JONES edit of everything worth knowing this season.

FINE CRAFT

This collaboration between Holly Ryan and Neuw Denim proves you don’t need to choose between style or sustainability.

W

ith a shared passion for minimising their environmental footprint, Neuw Denim and Holly Ryan have collaborated on a five-piece capsule collection. Ryan, a jewellery designer and sculptor, has designed graphic buttons in her iconic Picasso face and brought them to life using recycled metals. No harsh chemicals were used to create the distressed look of the five pieces either; the tee, dress, jacket and two pairs of jeans have all been hand stitched and hand brushed, and the buttons were hand sewn in Melbourne, giving each garment a truly homegrown feel. Available exclusively at David Jones Elizabeth Street, the collection is part of Neuw’s Zero initiative, which was created to ensure responsible production values, allowing the brand to clean and recycle water in a more energy efficient way and reduce its carbon footprint. Neuw Denim’s brand ethos goes hand-in-hand with Ryan’s own love of using found objects and recycled metals in her pieces. “I have been a long-time fan of Holly’s work, loving her jewellery and expansion into sculpture,” says Victoria Bolton, womenswear designer at Neuw Denim. “This collaboration fell into place so easily; it was meant to be.”

A

quick and easy conversation starter that’ll give you big-time credibility at any summer soiree, Sarah & Sebastian’s new Siren collection was designed in celebration of our oceans. Gilded shell necklaces, pearl headpieces and earrings cast from fishing debris salvaged from the Pacific Ocean aim to bring awareness to the damage being caused to reefs and marine life. Also focusing on pieces built to last, London’s Danse Lente – purveyor of cute-but-fun handbags to suit any occasion – joins the stable of brands at the just-updated Elizabeth Street store, alongside cult-status labels like Cecilie Copenhagen, Jennifer Behr, Aurelie Bidermann and Good American. To celebrate the refurbished Elizabeth Street store, brands including Aje, Levi’s and Bec + Bridge have created a selection of Exclusively Yours pieces and capsule collections, confi rming its status as the ultimate shopping destination. “Vintage 70s YSL is a beautiful reference point for this trend. You’ll notice there is often a cinched waist on utility jackets or boilersuits; it adds a level of femininity to the look.” – GAVIN GAGE, head of design and creative at Witchery

GREGORY LADNER hat, $49.95.

LOOK, NO HANDS

“A belt bag is a fun way to try the trend. Wear it diagonally at the front for a casual cross-body look or across the waist for extra shape.” – LIZ ORMANDO, buyer for womens millinery and accessories at David Jones

24

JON E S

“For a first-time wearer, I would start with small details such as an oversized fit or functional pockets, zips and drawstrings. Or try paperbag waist shorts – I’d wear them with hiker sandals and a bucket hat for days spent outside in the Australian sun.” – MARY LOU RYAN, creative director at Bassike

TELL ME ABOUT IT

BOTTEGA VENETA

“If you’re looking for ways to work the trend into your nine to five, a midi skirt is a fun and easy interpretation yet still feels corporate enough for board meetings. Danish brand Ganni (new to David Jones) does it well.” – RACHEL MCRAE, buyer for womens Australian designer at David Jones

IRINA SHAYK

“Irina Shayk has nailed the utilitarian look and her success comes from keeping it simple: she’ll wear a boilersuit, pulled-back hair and a plain military boot. Try it with a chunky platform sandal for summer. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley also works this trend by pairing back wardrobe staples like denim or bike shorts with a camo jacket.” – JESSIE FERGUSON, buyer for womens youth and active at David Jones

THE WAY earrings, $16.99.

HOW I START MY DAY: I’m an early riser. My husband, David, is too. Every morning, he makes a turmeric, lemon juice, paprika and water concoction that I drink while I’m packing school lunches. (I mustn’t be the only working mum doing that at 5.35am.) After a yoga class or power walk to Coogee Beach, I go through emails and check @theway feed while eating muesli, berries and yoghurt. I take my youngest daughter to school and then it’s straight to the office for a skinny flat white and to tackle my to-do list. We’re in the launch phase, so there’s always a lot happening and I have to wear many hats. I’ve taken to literally putting things on my head when I’m switching up roles, most notably a fluff y pink clutch when talking to the lawyers. WHAT KEEPS ME SANE: For a decade, I was out almost every night at a work event, so it’s still strange for me to walk in the door at 7pm, eat a (more often than not) vegetarian meal with the family and be in front of the TV by 8pm. I decided at the start of this year to cut back on alcohol and it’s paid off as I sleep much better. However, the only time of day my iPhone isn’t within reach is when I’m at yoga. The Business of Fashion app is still very much my daily indulgence, though I don’t have music on my phone because I don’t want that device to be in control of everything. Actually, I recently bought a CD to play in my car: Billie Eilish’s album, When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. HOW MY STYLE HAS EVOLVED: My wardrobe is organised into work and play, flats and heels. Monday to Friday, I only access the right side and on the weekend, the left. It makes getting dressed a speedy process. I love wearing dresses and skirts. Zimmermann, KitX and Romance Was Born are a few of my favourite dress designers, and I love a Prada midi-length skirt. Since launching my business, I’ve had to retire some of my tight dresses and heels during the week because I’m running around a lot more, packing and unpacking boxes. A start-up is stressful and there are weeks that are so hectic it’s hard to imagine how I’ll get through to Saturday. But I always do. J

WORDS LAURA AGNEW

F

reckles return to the bridge of your nose. Salt water evaporates on your skin, the remnants clinging to the hair on your arms. The afternoon’s greatest prize, an Icy Pole, begins to disappear after a moment of idling, dripping down your knuckles and landing with a soft splat on the pavement below. Summer is here. It is the season to slip into new skin, to escape reality, to forge fast friendships of circumstance or convenience. Growing up, that often meant weaving friendship bracelets with strangers from strange lands (or whoever was of similar age, within walking distance of Grandma’s house and understood the general logic of your makebelieve games). Now it might be laughs and rosés shared with a not-quite-friend, one of the few people left in town over the holidays. Unexpected friendships are one of summer’s greatest joys. Who do we want to be friends with this summer? Our effervescent cover star, Amanda Murphy. The Illinois native is the embodiment of everything that makes these months so magnetic. She is confident, ebullient and always up for a grand adventure – days before arriving in Sydney for JONES, she was scuba-diving in remote Fiji off an island with no wi-fi or phone service, utterly incommunicado. The 32-year-old also plays the harmonica and runs a horse farm with her sister (riding is a lifelong passion). In a past life, Murphy was a radiology technologist, however these days she’s too

busy to make it to the clinic for a shift – not for lack of enthusiasm but because her schedule is now filled with globetrotting, fronting major fashion campaigns and charming Italy’s high priestess of pop prints, Miuccia Prada. That summertime feeling of impermanence that hangs in the jasmine-scented air? Murphy’s tuned into it, too. “Sometimes I feel like I’m living a few different lives,” she says. “I’ve built close friendships and shared experiences with people all over the world [but] I find myself being so emotional lately, whether I’m leaving home or a new place. It’s sad when an adventure ends but I’m also happy because it means I’m really living, making the most of the time I have and forming strong connections with the friends I make along the way.” As it goes, all adventures must come to an end. Just as you once packed the family car and made the long drive home, returning to real life post-holiday, with its work, chores and obligations, is inevitable. But the feelings you carry within you this season – energy, promise and optimism – are ones to hold onto from here on out. Murphy brings those qualities to everything she does (on our shoot, she was as bubbly as ever), a lesson for the months ahead. Summer is a season for change. A time for making resolutions, discovering new ambitions and believing that anything you dream is within your grasp. Anything feels possible, because it is. J

THE SMART GUIDE TO NEW WAYS TO GET GLOWING

When it’s pushing 40 degrees, swap contoured cheeks for delicate touches of shine; a luminescent powder gives great holiday glow (even if you are spending all summer in the office). “I like to use a smaller fluff y powder brush – slightly bigger than a standard shadow brush – so you can really target high points,” says make-up artist Allison Boyle. The tops of cheekbones and the inner corners of the eyes are a great place to start.

BEAUTY

IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO MAKE SANGRIA...

Bring some texture to your hair. “Spritz in a styling spray first, then twist hair in a loose bun at the nape of the neck. Use a soft tie and leave it as long as possible – at least 20 minutes,” says hairstylist Jon Pulitano. A tie with plenty of slip, like one made from silk, will help hair to dry with bends rather than dents so you’re left with easy undone waves.

TO PUT ON WHEN THE CLOTHES COME OFF

Each single-dose Vita Liberata pHenomenal Organic Tan-Infused Cloth, $21 (pack of two), is saturated with enough tanner to cover your whole body and the natural golden glow they leave behind is seriously long lasting. If you need more persuasion, they’re also organic and ultra hydrating. Pack them for summer vacations but don’t be surprised if you become attached to the clever, fast-drying formula even when you’re at home.

BEST-ON-SAND HAIR

Moisture loss isn’t just happening to your skin; hair can get fried too. The chicest solution for long days on the beach is a wrap-around rope braid. “It’s a summer no-brainer,” says hairstylist Anthony Nader. Pulitano agrees: “The top braid controls flyaways, then you can tuck the rest of the hair into an easy bun for disheveled glam that’s perfect for summer.” For a long-term solution, give hair a little TLC with a weekly deep treatment. With white clay to soak up excess oil, the Hair Rituel by Sisley Pre-Shampoo Purifying Mask, $120, can be applied straight onto dry hair. Finish with an intensely conditioning product such as Christophe Robin Anti-Frizz Rescue Milk, $52, or Aveda Cherry Almond Leave In Conditioner, $30.

SERVE-AND-PROTECT SUN FORMULAS

Though we have a pretty good understanding of how the sun affects our skin, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they turn 70. Fed up with reading misinformation about suncare, beauty journalist Lisa Patulny founded Call Time on Melanoma, a not-for-profit initiative aimed at spreading the message of sun safety. “Sunscreen formulations have come a long

62

JON E S

way in recent years and you no longer have to settle for thick, goopy, oily or chalky finishes. There are plenty of options that offer high protection, broad-spectrum SPF but still feel elegant, like skincare,” she says. These are her stand-out SPF stars: DERMALOGICA

Age Smart Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50, $106. “I’ve recommended this to at least two dozen people who have all fallen hard and fast. It’s light but hydrating and contains bonus protective antioxidants and anti-ageing peptides.” ULTRACEUTICALS

SunActive SPF50+ Face Cream, $49. “This sinks in fast and isn’t sticky in the slightest – nice for wearing underneath make-up. It’s also packed with antioxidants to help ward off free-radical damage and is fragrance and paraben free.” NATIO Daily Defence

Try to have a bare manicure and pedicure at least once every season.” If you haven’t had bare toes for a long time, Politano recommends seeing a professional to properly shape and buff them. Growth is much slower on toes than fingers so the effect will last ages.

MAKE-UP THAT WON’T MELT RIGHT OFF

For the beach, trade in your standard base in favour of tinted sun protection such as Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream SPF25, $50, but don’t expect it to take the place of your regular SPF. “The Cancer Council advises applying one teaspoon of sunscreen to your face, neck and ears to achieve the SPF value on the bottle,” says Patulny. “Tinted sunscreen is great, but because you apply it as you would a tinted moisturiser or foundation, you only get a skerrick of sun protection. Apply a primary sunscreen first so you know you’re covered, then tinted sunscreen over the top.” Next, pick one place for colour and make it last. “Using a waterproof liner as a pop of colour is a really easy way to make your summer makeup interesting, with that lightweight freshness that the hot weather demands,” says Boyle.

Moisturiser SPF50+, $19.95. “This formula doesn’t have lots of bells and whistles, but it does the job. Think of it as a lovely day moisturiser infused with aloe and vitamin E that just happens to have broadspectrum SPF50+ in it.”

SO YOUR SKIN IS DRIER THAN THE SAHARA

“In summer, your skin is metabolising faster and it needs lots of water to function at its best. This means it’s easier for it to become dehydrated,” says skin expert Jocelyn Petroni. Her advice is to use more oils (they’ll help skin retain moisture), add hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to your regimen and, of course, drink more water. If a quick fix is what you’re after, keep a mist in your handbag. “A mist can work wonders for a light hydration throughout the day so skin appears more dewy, as well as to reset make-up,” says Petroni. Try Ella Baché Daily Hydration Mist, $39, or Jurlique Limited Edition Elderberry & Freesia Hydrating Mist, $52.

SKIP THE PAINT JOB

“Bare nails look beautiful and fresh,” says manicurist Diandra Politano. “It’s also a great way to let the nail breathe for a little while.

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

Your new top-shelf favourites are ready to redefine clean beauty.

At age 18, Anna Mitsios was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, which she refers to as a turning point in her life. She began studying naturopathy until she was able to swap her day job in finance for her passion. Eventually she began working at a natural fertility clinic and would recommend food and lifestyle changes to clients, alongside suggesting beauty products that were natural, and free of endocrinedisrupting toxins.

The problem? She found that the products already on the market were severely lacking. “There were very few options available that were ‘edible’, luxurious and therapeutic,” she says. “Clean may not necessarily mean green, vegan, ocean-friendly or natural ... it’s hard to define as this classification is not regulated.” Mitsios’ solution was a simple one. She started to blend her own. “I was literally whipping shea butter, cocoa butter and rosewater in my mother’s cake mixer and sharing my creations with family and friends. After [a lot of] research, courses and meetings, the Edible Beauty range was born.” Today the all-natural brand includes a range of products that use local ingredients – the kind that are worth getting excited about. “Edible Beauty Australia products contain an abundance of unique Australian wildcrafted plants,” says Mitsios. “Grown in their natural habitat, these ingredients have superior antioxidant profiles, developed [so] they can survive the harsh conditions of the remote and arid regions where they grow. This antioxidant defence system transfers to our skin, resulting in potent therapeutic and regenerating actions.” Right now, Mitsios is most excited about the brand’s newest release, Basking Beauty Natural Sunscreen SPF50 (just in time for summer). It’s plant-based, hydrating and reefsafe, and, she says, “It’s revolutionised how I feel about sunscreen.” From top: Edible Beauty No.3 Exotic Goddess Ageless Serum, $74. t the rate she’s going, Harriette Pilbeam is going to need a new passport. As Hatchie, she’s been jetting around the world for the past she’s-lost-counthow-many months with her band, playing a fresh blend of shoegaze to increasingly enthusiastic crowds. “We did a massive American tour, then came home for some Australian shows, then went back to the UK and Europe.” After that, it was back home to play a full house at Splendour in the Grass festival, before returning stateside in August. This month, Pilbeam and co. are back on their native time zone for their long-awaited Australian headline shows. Pitchfork may have dubbed her “the dream-pop idol of tomorrow”, but the 26 year old was surprised by the positive response to her latest musical project. “I’ve only been doing this Hatchie act for two years, but I’ve been in bands for 10. It’s sometimes surprising, reading people’s comments on Twitter and Instagram about which songs they love or that make them feel a certain way. It might be a song that I almost didn’t include on the album.” For her debut album, Keepsake, Pilbeam spent time at home in Brisbane, strumming melodies and penning lyrics in her pyjamas. “I recorded all the demos myself at home, then went into the studio for a four-week stint late last year. But in the end, about 50 per cent of what’s on the album is stuff from the original demos.” With a jam-packed touring schedule and devoted ‘Hatchlings’ ready and eagerly waiting for the next release – both on social media and front row at her shows – Pilbeam can’t rest on Hatchie’s breakout success for too long. “They always say you have your whole life to do your first album but then only a year or two to do your second. hen you communicate and work with birds, you have to shut down your thinking mind, connect and observe. Maybe that’s why I love working with them,” says photographer and artist Leila Jeffreys. That’s not to say photographing birds is easy. For her latest exhibition, High Society, Jeff reys spent years troubleshooting her ambitious concept. On her list of problems: “How do you get 300 birds to a set? How do you feed them and keep them cool when you have equipment that heats up?” Of course, she’s well versed in avian language. Jeff reys has been photographing them for more than a decade; her work has appeared in London, Los Angeles, Singapore and even the windows of Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York. She collaborates with conservationists, ornithologists and bird sanctuaries to snap portraits of Aussie favourites, such as budgerigars and cockatoos, and rare and endangered species, including New Zealand’s kakapo parrot. Her career has taken her to the edges of the earth, too. “I would never normally say yes to going away with so much work going on, but when I was recently offered a place on a small Arctic expedition, I knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” she says. “It turned out to be an incredible experience ... surrounded by wilderness for two weeks. It sparked an almost emotional love for the planet.” It’s exactly what you hope to hear from a wildlife photographer. Upon returning to Sydney, she began taking her family for weekly swims on cold winter mornings. “I’m trying to hold onto that feeling I got there for as long as I can.” J High Society is showing at Olsen Gallery in Sydney from October 16 to November 9.

All the world’s a stage

The unconventional education of Zoe Terakes has served her well.

P

arents always tell their children that if they don’t work hard at school, they’ll never amount to anything. It seems Zoe Terakes missed that memo. Having cemented her next-bigthing status with a starring role in ABC legal drama Janet King, the 19 year old admits school wasn’t her vibe. “I was terrible at science and maths, and I was pretty naughty,” says Terakes, then concedes she wasn’t uninterested in school, just uninspired. “All my reports read, ‘Shows enthusiasm but doesn’t follow through.’” Then came the lightbulb moment. “In Year 11, a teacher picked me out and said, ‘You should try a few acting classes.’ From there, I booked my first audition, which became Janet King.” The rest of her school years were a juggling act of study and stage. By the end, she was running from final exams straight to the theatre to play Catherine in Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge. It was a role she reprised at the Melbourne Theatre Company last year, earning her a Helpmann nomination. These days she’s acting full-time and recently wrapped her first feature film, Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt). It’s the story of two high-school girls falling in love. “I’m gay,” says Terakes, “and I didn’t have anything to watch when I was in high school. There are no romcoms for us, so this feels like an important movie.” But next, we’ll see the Sydney teen in Foxtel drama The End with Golden Globe-nominee Frances O’Connor and Dame Harriet Walter. “Just to be on the same set as those two actors was a pinchyourself moment for me and I learnt so much.” Zoe Terakes, a model student after all. Halcyon Three writers reminisce on the summers that still linger.

T

here is something about summer that makes me want to go home. I grew up in New Zealand but since I moved to Sydney for university, my brother to Oxford and my parents to London, there hasn’t been a home to go back to. The four of us have become the 11 of us; we all still live in different countries and my daughters have never had the kind of summer I loved as a child and think of more and more as I’ve become older as the only kind. The kind with cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents and family friends

72

JON E S

crammed into somebody’s holiday house, millions of cars parked on the lawn, sand in the shower, towels crisped to cardboard over the balcony rail and teenagers bunked in the garage. However, two years ago, my brother and his wife bought a farm near Queenstown – or rather an open field that will one day be a farm. It is halfway up a mountain. There is a stream running through it, a lake at the opposite end of the valley it looks over and snow-capped mountains behind it. In the way of amenities, there is a tap and a single socket affi xed to a rusty pole. We decided, all of us, to go camping.

SUMMER READ I thought water, power and a tent was all we’d need to live happily in a field for three weeks but 11 people, aged three months to 70, need a temporary village it seems and my parents arrived a week before and built us one. It was so amazing, I nearly cried when I fell out of the 4WD needed to get to the place and saw the mad, beautiful and dubiously-wired Glastonbury with a circle of tents under the trees and an outside kitchen that had been a family’s inside kitchen until they ripped it out and sold it to my father – sink, bench and cupboards – for $50 on Gumtree. My mother had made a pizza oven with a sack of concrete, a Swiss ball and a YouTube tutorial. My father had made a bathroom with tarpaulin, nails, no roof and an iron bath that may have been a cow trough when he found it by the back fence. He wanted the children to have a horse and rang a farmer who was going away. The farmer said he’d lend us one if we took his chickens and baby goats as well. My mother free-cycled a washing machine and strung up a clothesline. For three weeks, we did nothing except cook, read, ride the horse and peg out washing. The children spent every day trying to reroute the stream with rocks. They got knots in their hair that couldn’t be brushed out. The goats wandered around eating grass, anything we left on the grass and a selection of my Bassike off the clothesline. That, and the fact that it was only ever scorching or indescribably cold, is why I ended up wearing a borrowed fleece and a hat from Bunnings for 18 days straight. I have never in my life loved an outfit more. At some point our camp started to look less like Glastonbury, more like a disaster-evacuee station and, by the end, the off-grid compound of a sect whose members only eat bacon and are not allowed to wear shoes. We had become the People of the Fleece. On the last day, we took everything down and it went back to being a field again. Except for a system of paths trampled into the grass and squares of bare earth where the tents had been, laid out like a small map of the home we’d gone back to and lived, all of us together, all summer.

It’s not that hot

I When I booked our Airbnb, I pictured bell tents, exotic woven rugs and camels silhouetted against the sunset.

by FAITH CAMPBELL

t is 35 degrees. Outside. Inside our packedearth hut, it’s pushing 45, on the way to a hallucinatory 50. My dad, tall and older now than I ever picture him, stoops under the low door frame. “Are you trying to kill me, girl?” He lights a smoke – bootleg Camel brand – and it feels even hotter. Our Bedouin host, Said, laughs coolly in the stifling, dusty room. After a five-hour coach ride across the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech to Ouarzazate we took another five-hour coach ride here, to M’Hamid El Ghizlane. This is the edge of the country, where Moroccan sand muddles with sand from Western Sahara. It is also July, high summer in this part of the world, and the heat is every cliché: oppressive, aggressive, fiery and exhausting. When I booked our Airbnb (Said is a Superhost), I pictured bell tents, exotic woven rugs and camels silhouetted against the sunset. The best tagine I would ever eat; mint tea poured from a silver pot. Foolhardy, we lurch through town. Shops are shuttered, sleepy-eyed donkeys peer out of dark doorways and a lone local wrapped in robes buzzes by on a motorbike. It’s too hot for birds; too hot even for flies. If Marrakech were a relentless assault on the senses, this is the African version of a Wild West American ghost town. We stop at a cafe – agreeing it’s not that hot – on our way to a hotel we’ve been told has air conditioning. Dad has seven children and this is the first time we’ve spent together, just us. But everyone here thinks we’re married. I watch on horrified as he deploys schoolboy French to correct them: “Elle est ma fille!” (“She is my daughter!” we both hope he’s saying.) The cafe’s electricity shorts and we drink warm lemonade in the dark. The hotel is deserted, still under construction. An air conditioner works hard in the empty dining room where we sit for the next eight hours, ordering black coffee, orange slices, olives and bread. DAV I DJON E S .C OM

andice passed me the Grain Waves before licking her salty fingers clean one by one. We were a picture of pasty, thirty-something limbs, juxtaposed by black swimsuits, sprawled across the rocks just short of the beach’s northern headland. Close enough to hear the waves crashing lightly, creating a sense of calmness. Taking in the ocean before us, Candice threw her thick, curly hair up in a bun and grinned happily at me like a kid in an ice cream shop. Until a few months ago, Candice and I were strangers. I had just moved to the northern beaches from a damp and over-priced inner west ‘basement’ with my then-boyfriend. He figured a daily surf would be good for his mental health and I was keen on the sea change. We found a two-bedroom,

ground floor unit a few blocks from Freshwater Beach. The air here felt wilder with a briny fragrance that summoned me to forge a fresh start. An otherwise ordinary apartment, our lounge room boasted wall-to-wall windows, irradiating splashes of mustard and a couple of 50s club chairs a friend had loaned us. It was a beachside dream, arranged modestly with hand-me-downs. Two months into the lease it was clear our relationship wasn’t working. He moved back to his parents’ and contact quickly ceased. Candice, my new next-door neighbour, sensed he’d moved out and stopped by to see if I was OK. It was a small gesture but comforting. Though I didn’t know what living here without him would be like, I chose to stay on alone and have the summer I signed up for. At the beach, a young father sat in a sunny patch nearby, glancing at Candice and me. His toddler shivered, clutched in paternal arms and swathed in a love and security that momentarily pained me. The Go-Betweens’ ‘Streets of Your Town’ hummed through our portable speaker. Thinking I was checking out the young dad, Candice shot me a cheeky side-eye and we both broke into laughter. The mood was always light with her; sometimes belly-laugh light. In spite of the little time we had known each other, there was an ease between us akin to life-long friends. She reminded me not to take myself too seriously and I was grateful for it. The buoyancy of a fresh start combined with Candice’s friendship helped me to heal that summer I spent near Freshwater Beach. Growth came from a welcome breather from the busyness of the city and an unlikely friendship that reminded me to pause, laugh and take in the beauty that can accompany pain, loss and uncertainty. Late one night, toward the end of my 12-month lease, I strolled down to the beach before the thick of the evening had set in. I felt euphoric. It was a rare summer night on the cusp of autumn; the warm wind was gentle and quiet enough not to intrude. Reflecting on the months just passed, I sat alone and still, marvelling in the moment of peace. I watched as glimpses of white sea foam emerged, illuminated under the moonlight. Each wave rolled in threatening, with its unpredictability, the unknown. And yet, upon each crash, another wave would follow, rising more purposefully, more eloquently than ever before. J

We don’t talk much. The wi-fi works and I look at my phone. Dad falls asleep sitting up. We stare at the shimmering heat. Outside on smoke breaks I pat a floppy, dusty kitten. “Don’t touch that cat,” Dad says for the hundredth time in his life. “Don’t smoke,” I say for the thousandth time in mine. Back inside the air feels cool in comparison and the oranges are sweet. A tuk-tuk jolts us noisily back to Said’s place. I want my photo taken in the sand dunes and we leave Dad with a glass of hot tea and his Camels. “Your father is sick?” Said asks. “Yes, from smoking.” Without hesitation, the Bedouin hurls himself off a tall dune, laughing. I insist I’m too old to follow. “You’ll only get old when you stop having fun,” he shouts across the sand. The hut is now hot enough to bake bread. Said drags our beds outside and Dad tells the same joke twice in case we missed it: “Gives new meaning to Airbnb!” “Gives new meaning to Airbnb!” The floral polyester sheet clings to me like an electrified second skin. I’m sweating beneath it but feel exposed without it, the Sahara desert boundless around me, the starry sky a heavy blanket above. I can hear Dad breathing noisily as I fall asleep.

At some point our camp started to look less like Glastonbury [and] more like a disaster-evacuee station.

The late, great Italian designer Ettore Sottsass – who founded the Memphis Group, one of Italy’s most iconic design and architecture groups, in 1980 – is having quite the moment (see: the indisputably hip Ultrafragola mirror). If you’ve noticed an increase in softly scalloped lines, geometric decor and saccharine hues of lavender, pale pink and mint green on your Pinterest feed lately, this may be the interiors update you’re looking for. Finish the look with some bold bursts of contrasting colour and a few party-ready touches, like a vintage-look radio or champagne bucket.

Acceptable beyond the 80s. HAY bar stool, $495.

HOME Smells like the great outdoors. ADDITION STUDIO incense set, $59.95.

AMANGIRI, UTAH Sometimes less is so much more. An all-white, Scandi-inspired space is fresh and clean, but the organic evolution of the trend is decidedly more mellow. Warm up a strictly neutral palette with shades of ivory, sand and tan. Designed to complement, rather than compete with, the natural landscape, opt for a thoughtful edit of natural textures – leather, linen, water-reed baskets, hand-thrown pottery – and organic shapes that make everything feel just-enough lived in. The finishing touch is burning incense, delicately scented with Australian natives like eucalyptus and acacia.

For lazy afternoons on the couch. DAVID JONES throw, $129.

A subtle way to incorporate texture. GREAT DANE bench, $1995.

A home for your rubber plant. COUNTRY ROAD storage basket, $79.95.

Makes a weeknight dinner feel fancy. SALT & PEPPER bowl, $16.95, and plate, $19.95.

You’ll never tire of looking at it.

Master traditional home-cooked meals. The Silver Spoon cookbook, $75.

HOME Try a subtle hint of gold. DAVID JONES 5x7cm photo frame, $39.95.

HALCYON HOUSE, CABARITA BEACH Make every day feel like a holiday. The signature styling notes of Hamptons homes – wicker chairs and baskets, whitewashed timber furniture and salvaged shells as decor – are forever chic. Inject extra energy and spirit into your space with clashing prints in shades of cobalt and sky blue. Playful and tropical finishing touches that glisten in the afternoon sun (think gilded frames and pineapples on everything) and plenty of greenery keep the look elevated, but still inviting.

Keep your coffee table books tonal too. PRADA Catwalk, $100.

Functional, decorative and plenty colourful. MARMOSET FOUND vase, $49.95.

Best for mixing and matching. ZAAB cushion, $59.95. It’ll make a homemade club sandwich look five star. IN THE ROUNDHOUSE plate, $29.

The most fun way to put a stop to the party. KATE SPADE NEW YORK stopper, $79.95.

TRAVEL

Endless summer Insta-worthy escapes best enjoyed in balmy weather.

LILY OF THE VALLEY, SAINT-TROPEZ. Though it’s only a 20-minute drive from Saint-Tropez, the flash is turned down significantly at this Philippe Starck-designed hotel. Think sun-dappled terraces, organic cuisine and unspoiled sea views; Provençal abbey meets Mediterranean summer home meets California cool. The onsite Wellness Village offers a variety of programs to treat whatever ails you based on ancient medicines blended with innovative new techniques. Get a Biologique Recherche facial or cool off after your sauna with a snow shower, believed to strengthen the immune system. The prestige of this iconic peninsula is balanced with the beauty and charm of an off-the-beaten-path holiday resort; it’s the kind of place you’ll want to call home at least three months out of every year.

ESPERANZA, CABO SAN LUCAS. It’s not often you find a hotel that combines the facilities and style of a super-chic resort with rooms that offer the cosiness of a luxe Airbnb. Esperanza, on Los Cabos’ famed resort stretch, has the mix just right. During the day, swim in one of the resort’s four pools, be pampered at the world-class spa, or make like a travel blogger at Cabo’s most spectacular – and most photographed – cliffside dining spot, La Cocina del Mar (pictured). Dine on just-caught fish, charred octopus and the freshest produce from the surrounding region. You’ll have your influencer hat on almost everywhere at Esperanza, which has earthy Baja luxe down to a fine art. The 59room property is scattered with grid-worthy moments. Play giant

chess on a plush lawn overlooking the Pacific or visit the onsite fashion boutique with some of the best shopping on the peninsula. After filling your camera roll, retreat to your casita or villa. Each is individually styled to feel more like a warm, welcoming home than a hotel room, thanks to the huge bedrooms and bathrooms, multiple terraces – where you can take in the sunset as you sip a mezcal cocktail – and impressively stocked kitchens for times when you just can’t manage another lobster taco (it’s rare, but it can happen). Splurge on a luxury suite and you’ll also enjoy a private pool, jacuzzi, butler and personal chef. You won’t want to leave the grounds to brave the Cabo party scene and with perks as good as these, you won’t have to. DAV I DJON E S .C OM

If you’re of the belief that what’s good enough for Will and Kate is good enough for you, then look no further. The royals spent their honeymoon at this private island resort, where 11 secluded villas are nestled among lush tropical palms just steps away from white-sand beaches. This hotel promises privacy and personalised everything; staff will customise every element of your stay but then leave you to enjoy it in welcome peace. Active holidaymakers can take advantage of the island’s dive centre, daily yoga classes, water sports, fishing trips, guided walks, bicycles and island buggies, while those out for a morning-to-night R&R experience can avail themselves of the spa (or an in-villa treatment if leaving the room is too demanding), sunset cruises,

the infinity pool with requisite views and their own exclusive villa pool. If you want to make the most of the solitude, private dining can be arranged in alfresco spots around the island – or for the full royal treatment, just have meals brought straight to your villa. Social butterflies can visit West Beach Bar for food and drinks. Given the appeal of North Island is its pristine natural setting, it makes sense that the hotel runs a conservation program. Called Noah’s Ark, its aim is to honour the environment above all else. What does that mean for you? Expect a plastic-free stay and, if you’re lucky, turtle sightings along the beach. Here’s the catch: access is only via helicopter, so you will need to touch base with the concierge to arrange a ride (if you don’t have your own).

DOWNTON ABBEY MEETS ANTHEA CRAWFORD

Fit for a modern-day countess, classic Australian label Anthea Crawford has designed a 14-piece capsule collection in collaboration with Downton Abbey. We chat with Crawford about opulence and the art of dressing up.

Fringe dress, $599.

Why Downton Abbey?

The alignment felt really right and it was such an inspiration for me creatively. We share similar values, and our aesthetic fits seamlessly. And, I have to admit, I watched the series religiously.

What do you love about the show?

Tie jacket, $549.

Looking past the ever-intriguing plots, it’s the costumes that drew me in. I love the art of dressing up. Downton Abbey reminds us of a time when dressing up was sacred, before mass production, when artisan fashion was appreciated. We wanted to create a collection of pieces that gave that immaculate, bespoke feel in an effortlessly contemporary manner.

Tie-neck blouse, $249.

Describe the ultimate Anthea Crawford woman.

Sequin lace gown, $949.

Elegant, timeless and empowered. We dress women for important occasions and everyday accomplishments. Whether in the workplace or for a wedding, we empower her and make her feel her most beautiful.

Which is your favourite piece?

The black fringe dress. It has that playful, elegant feel – wait till you see how it moves. Use the era to inspire your accessory choices; think intricate beading, modern fringing and lush velvet. DAV I DJON E S .C OM
