The 2023 National Sales Meeting theme was "The Medline Advantage," which represents the many ways we stand apart from our competitors. Our superior products, manufacturing and operations infrastructure, and customer service, combined with our greatest asset: our people who go above and beyond to help our customers achieve success.
During the sales meetings, we announced recipients of the President’s Award, which recognizes exceptional commitment to customers, and the Jim Mills Excellence Awards, honoring individuals who embody Medline’s entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic and never-give-up attitude.
Congratulations to the award recipients across the sales team!

The Medline Newsroom recently talked with Amin Setoodeh, BSN, Medline senior vice president of skin health solutions and clinical services, to learn more about the state of skin health today and the need for evidence-based skin protocols, as well as the potential impact of the CARS consensus statements in providing specific guidance on preventive skin care.

The last few years have brought significant changes to healthcare— from telehealth and a shift toward care and recovery at home, to staffing and supply chain challenges. And these changes are just the beginning.
“We’re at a starting point, with healthcare likely to continue evolving,” said Angela Newman,
Medline senior director of clinical services. “In five years, healthcare products and processes are going to be different.”
Fortunately, Medline is uniquely prepared—globally and across divisions—to meet evolving customer needs.
“Medline operates the largest
U.S. supply chain of any medical-surgical manufacturer and distributor, and we have made significant investments to ensure the resiliency of the healthcare supply chain,” said Jim Boyle, Medline executive vice president. “We also regularly offer new and innovative clinical products and solutions—often working alongside and anticipating
what our customers need in a rapidly changing environment.
“For our sales team, this is the Medline Advantage,” said Boyle. “It’s what distinguishes us from our competitors. We’re responsive and invested for the long term.”
In fact, across all areas of our business, Medline is innovating
to meet current and future healthcare challenges.
While we are well known as a manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies, often considered Medline’s “best kept secret” are the innovative clinical solutions—products, assessments, education, training and support—that help
customers provide optimal care.
Ongoing staff shortages have disrupted many hospital protocols, increasing healthcare-associated infections, diminishing patient outcomes and impacting providers’ performance-based reimbursement.
To help get healthcare protocols
back on track, Medline has conducted more than 1,000 clinical assessments over the past several years in three areas of care: skin health, urological and vascular.
A Medline-directed clinical assessment typically includes a short staff survey, store room review, and clinician and leadership interviews
on specific protocols for a particular area of care. The information is then used to develop organization, training and process improvements.
“Medline takes an evidencebased approach to empower staff to tackle key patient safety initiatives,” said Newman. “We use best practice guidelines to make customized
education and product recommendations to help staff work more consistently.”
To help stay on top of healthcare challenges and to secure feedback on new products and solutions, Medline meets regularly with its Skin Health and Infection Prevention Acute Care advisory boards. These 19 experts—WOC (wound, ostomy and continencecertified) nurses and infection preventionists—provide a lens into staffing, education, decision making, technology and quality improvement issues impacting clinicians throughout the U.S.
Last fall, after a two-year hiatus, the advisory boards met at Medline’s Northfield headquarters to discuss ongoing challenges, potential solutions and future opportunities.
They include new OptiView transparent dressings, a “once in a decade” product set to revolutionize pressure injury prevention, said Ethan Schmitt, Medline product manager. “The dressing features cutting-edge HydroCore™ technology, which provides immediate visibility to the skin without the need to lift the dressing.” OptiView redistributes peak pressure and displaces shear forces while managing microclimate on the patient’s skin.
Because OptiView is clear, busy nurses and staff can quickly assess the patient’s skin without removing the dressing, leading to less product waste and fewer unnecessary dressing changes. As a result, clinicians will gain back time to focus on providing optimal care for their patients.
“There is currently nothing like OptiView on the market,” said Schmitt.
“We have infection preventionists and WOC nurses from facilities of all sizes across the country,” said Katie Treptow, Medline senior director of marketing. “Bringing them together to have conversations about challenges gives us a tremendous amount of insight into how we can better support clinicians.”
The boards also provide input on new skin health and infection prevention products.
Medline recently unveiled several new and improved products and solutions, designed to meet the evolving skin health and infection prevention needs of patients and customers, and to ease the burden of overworked staff.
In addition, Medline has updated the packaging for Remedy Skin Care products— the market leader—with a more intuitive design and simplified instructions.
To further support nurses and other healthcare professionals, Medline
University offers more than 280 free continuing education courses in 25 categories, with more than 160 that qualify for continuing education (CE) credit. More recently, Medline University launched a Microlearning Program, providing training and information in small segments, easily accessible on phones, tablets or laptops. The initial courses address CAUTI prevention, indwelling catheters for healthcare assistants, self-care for nurses, workplace violence, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), patient-centered care for LGBTQIA+, culturally competent care and the opioid epidemic.
“For healthcare workers who are always on the go, Micorolearning courses provide quick, easily accessible information,” said Geoff Kass, Medline University director.
Medline University also is integrating games into
some training programs to help reinforce protocols for busy clinicians.
“During the pandemic, we were looking for innovative ways to engage our audience remotely, and we began to think outside the box about how to build confidence and information retention. As a result, we’ve been moving our activities more toward gamification models,” said Kass.
“For instance, Medline University uses scenario-based elements in their ‘Self-care for Nurses’ course that includes vending machine graphics to present benefits of self-care, a maze to navigate barriers to self-care, a reflection exercise for identifying burnout and a puzzle for achieving wellness through balance,” said Kass.
Medline also is evolving to meet patients where they are.

Today, more aging adults are choosing home care, and more patients are leaving the hospital sooner after surgery. When combined with fewer nurses and staff, there is a growing need for products and solutions that bridge the gap between the hospital, post-acute and at-home care.
are prepared for surgery,” said John Verhamme, Medline senior project manager, Dynacor Division. “We provide them with capabilities to reach patients where they are, whether at home or in a postacute setting.”
worked with the hospital to create patient discharge kits with five to seven days of supplies and a list of websites for securing additional products.
Medline is the market leader in healthcare procedure kits, manufacturing over 200 million annually in North America. More recently, Medline has been working closely with healthcare systems to create custom patients kits that include pre- and post-surgical supplies and instructions to ensure a safe post-hospital transition and ideal recovery.
“Health systems want to ensure that their patients
Last year, Medline partnered with University Hospitals in the Cleveland area to create custom patient kits for nine surgical procedures. Each kit, delivered directly to a patient’s home, contains procedurespecific supplies (such as nutritional drinks, exercise aids, and body wash or wipes), and instructions for before and after surgery.
Custom kits also ensure supply continuity in products between hospital and home. Saint Francis Health System was among the first healthcare providers in eastern Oklahoma to undergo a mandated transition to a new feeding tube system. They soon realized patients would not have immediate access to the new feeding system products once they returned home. Medline
“From a hospital or caregiver perspective, we’re stretched incredibly thin,” said Newman. “These kits are important in keeping our patients safe and ensuring they go home after surgery or a hospital stay without any negative outcomes.”
Medline also offers a broad range of home healthcare products through the company’s at Home website (athome.medline.com), as well as on Amazon.com, WalMart.com and other e-commerce retail sites. Medline-branded and Medlinemanufactured products can be found in over 115,000 retail locations throughout the U.S. They include diagnostic, mobility, incontinence, personal, respiratory and other care products.
“I love that we take care of patients throughout the continuum of care; we never leave them,” said Dawn Sicco,
For example, patients and caregivers can access Medline wound care products—the same products that are used in the hospital setting—to treat chronic conditions related to diabetes and aging.
At CVS Pharmacy locations, Medline will soon offer a new line of eight “Home Living Essentials” caregiver kits, including the “Sit Safe & Clean” bathing kit and the “Reach, Grab & Go” mobility kit. Medline also is partnering with well-known brands—such as Arm & Hammer to enhance odor control on the company’s FitRight products, and Martha Stewart to provide stylish designs and timeless sophistication on a new line of mobility and care aids.
“We’re working to meet the evolving needs of aging patients and their caregivers,” said Sicco.
To support home care agencies, Medline offers products, tools and reimbursement strategies to improve efficiencies, reimbursement and care quality, said Zach Pocklington,

Medline senior vice president. This includes delivering medical supplies directly to patient homes and working with providers to reduce costs by regularly auditing supply use and recommending more costefficient alternatives.
“We have curated the ‘how’ and ‘why’ Medline can help home health care agencies,” said Pocklington. “There are three primary themes: clinical, financial and operational.”
In addition, caregiver technological solutions, offered through Medline third-party partnerships, are helping to improve care and bridge workforce shortages. For example, a skin health app can quickly assess the size, width and depth of a patient wound and suggest appropriate products and protocols for treatment. Medline also offers telehealth patient monitoring solutions through VitalTech and patient triage through CareXM.
To help ensure a more resilient supply chain and make sure our healthcare customers have the right products when needed, Medline has invested more than $2 billion in operations, manufacturing and information technology.
Since 2018, Medline’s Healthcare Resilience Initiative (HRI) has supported the construction of eight new distribution centers, nearly 150 manufacturing expansion projects, a new global digital customer ordering platform and other improvements.
Today, Medline’s North American operations include:
• 20 manufacturing facilities
• 50 distribution centers, totaling more than 28 million square feet, including four near the largest U.S. ports
• Over 1,600 MedTrans trucks, delivering more than threequarters of the company’s sales volume, and enabling one-day shipping to 99% of the U.S.
More recently, Medline invested $500 million in additional supply chain inventory to ensure product availability and timely delivery to healthcare providers.
“Because of our ongoing investments, if at any time we have a distribution or other site disabled—due to a natural
disaster or other crisis—we have the ability to support the rest of our network and customer base,” said Steve Miller, Medline executive vice president, supply chain.
“We’ve also invested heavily in technology and automation,” said Miller. Approximately half of the company’s distribution centers use mobile robotics, or “goods-to-person technology,” to send products directly to a team member’s workstation.
Medline operates the largest owned transportation fleet of any healthcare product distributor in the U.S., and the number of vehicles and drivers continues to grow to meet demand. This includes the recent purchase of parcel trucks for deliveries to small facilities and patient homes, much like Amazon or FedEx.
“Every time we deliver on MedTrans, our service and cost are a competitive advantage,” said Miller, who also praised the resiliency and dedication of MedTrans drivers, along with the entire operations team.
To stay on top of evolving supply chain issues, Medline hosts biannual Supply Chain Executive Roundtables with healthcare providers—both customers and noncustomers.
“The goal of these roundtables is to create an environment where there is peer-to-peer collaboration and sharing; where participants have a chance to talk through some of the biggest challenges they’re facing in their organizations,” said Melanie Millar, Medline director, marketing sales.
For Medline, the roundtables “give us a chance to be in the conversation. We’re not providing a sales pitch but instead an environment to
help facilitate discussions on key issues.”
“We’re investing in technology, but also in our people,” said Miller. “We’re more than 11,000 team members strong in operations, and our success is based on the quality of our great team.”
“Medline understands that the most pressing challenge in healthcare today is the high cost of care,” said Jim Pigott, Medline executive vice president. “Fortunately for us, Medline developed a business model many years ago that is still well positioned to address this challenge. To that end, it’s important that we continue to provide solutions to all our customers as they face healthcare’s ever-growing financial pressure.”
Over the next five years and beyond, healthcare will continue to undergo tremendous change—change that will lead to newer technologies, innovative solutions and, ultimately, a more resilient and effective system of care. At Medline, we’re responsive and invested for the long term, and ready for what’s next.

As depleting excess component inventory became a key goal for Division 20, it also became evident that Floor Grade instrument SKUs were a key piece to reducing this volume and cost, over $2 million of it to be precise. The team physically reviewed 800 different components within this Legacy Medline product line. After realizing the amount of duplicate items, the team completed a large scale consolidation that resulted in a 50% SKU reduction and nearly $600,000 in AGM savings. Additionally, the project mitigated large scrap volumes, created a more focused product offering, and improved vendor performance, forecasts, and lead times.

Significant price increases and lack of brand autonomy with multilayer compression provided an opportunity to introduce an innovative new product. The team traveled in the field to solicit clinician and patient feedback to develop a new product that solves the compression market needs. As a result, AccuWrap was launched to improve patient outcomes, accuracy in application, sourcing costs, and brand autonomy. AccuWrap supports nursing competency while promoting patient adherence through comfort, which leads to improved outcomes and positions Medline as an innovator in compression therapy.

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the Textile Division had an extreme surplus of raw material for reusable isolation gowns. The team needed to come up with a solution to use the raw material to avoid offloading the material at significant loss. The division implemented a creative plan to use the fabric for a different application, making wipeable pillows out of the excess fabric. The end product is a profitable addition to the line with exponential sales success.

In 2020, the Advanced Skin Care team began to receive numerous customer inquiries for skin and hair care products that meet the needs of a diverse patient population. The team learned that the majority of competitor products today feature ingredients that are not suitable for this purpose. The division created an evidence-based response to show how Remedy products are suitable and then collaborated with Medline’s Black Employee Network (BEN) on customer messaging. The strategy has led to additional new product launches to help expand this growing market.

Shane Kiel, VP of Manufacturing Operations at Medline’s Neptune, NJ, facility (Excelsior), shares more about the location’s people, products and award-winning safety practices.
What products are manufactured at the Neptune facility?
Excelsior manufactures prefilled saline flush syringes, as well as a few other small-volume syringes. Manufacturing is divided between two locations—90% of the product is made in the Neptune, NJ, facility, and 10% is produced at the Hartland, WI, facility.
How has Excelsior manufacturing evolved over the years?
Excelsior was in business for 26 years prior to being purchased by Medline in 2015. Having been with the company both before and after the acquisition, I can attest to our continued commitment to producing the highest quality product. Customer demand for our products is increasing, and to support this growth we’re expanding with an additional building nearby, which is expected to be complete in Q2 2024.
What makes your branch unique?
Q Q Q A A
Our team collectively has hundreds of years of experience making medical devices, so we are renowned for our manufacturing expertise. The geographic area that we’re in is a popular location for medical and pharmaceutical companies, so many of our employees come to Medline with prior medical manufacturing experience.
A
We have a strong connection with our community, which helps us attract employees from the area who want to stay with us long term. We’re located in a neighborhood two miles from the beach, and about 70% of our employees walk or ride their bikes to work. We enjoy relatively low turnover, and many employees come to us through referrals from people who work here.
QAs a three-time winner of Medline’s Golden Cone Award—which recognizes manufacturing facilities for exceptional safety performance and protocols—how do you create and maintain a safety-focused culture?
AWe’re very proud of our extensive safety program, and our success in this area is a testament to our people who consistently keep safety at the top of the list. We have lots of people involved and invested in the safety program, and it’s something we speak about all the time to understand how we’re doing and where we can improve. The work we do is very labor intensive and manual in many cases, so ensuring the safety of our team goes hand-in-hand with that. For us as a facility, the Golden Cone Award is well known and is a source of pride for us.
The Operations leadership team selected the winners of the Branch of the Year Award, which recognizes branches that have gone above and beyond in supporting customers and team members, while also achieving exceptional performance metrics throughout the past 12 months. Employees from left to right: Tim Drew, Vianey Lopez-Herrera, Yuri Medel, Jason Fitchett, Mike Beyers, Jose Negron-Santiago, Jose Luis VazquezReggie Ricks knew the drive on I-80 from Sacramento to Donner Pass and up through northern Nevada would be slick and slow-going. An experienced driver for MedTrans—Medline’s 1,600-vehicle-strong transportation fleet—Ricks makes the 3½hour drive from the Medline distribution center in Tracy, CA, to Reno, NV, several times a week.
“I’m set with snow chains,” said Ricks. “Let’s hope Caltrans checkpoints can let me through,” referring to the California transportation agency responsible for enforcing which trucks and vehicles have the necessary equipment and experience to traverse the interstate in wintery conditions. Ricks has been through severe weather situations enough to know some Caltrans personnel on a first-name basis.
Getting essential medical supplies and equipment to healthcare providers in northern Nevada proved particularly challenging for MedTrans during this 20222023 season, with snowfall in areas along Ricks’ route hitting 60+ feet.
But despite the relentless weather, the MedTrans logistics team of dispatchers, drivers and emergency management personnel were unflappable—getting creative with delivery planning and execution and offering constant communication, optimum transparency and realistic delivery times.
Going above and beyond for customers MedTrans’ extra effort and can-do attitude during this season’s unprecedented snows were recently acknowledged by customers served by the Tracy distribution center.
“There is something truly incredible about having great partners. I wanted to take a moment to recognize the lengths our primary distribution partner Medline has gone to these past snowy weeks,” posted Mary Shipley, director of supply chain management at Renown Health, northern Nevada’s largest nonprofit integrated health network. “It takes a village. Grateful to have you in ours.”
Richard Arretche, senior manager of operations at MedTrans, always appreciates the customer shout-outs, while confessing that the company expects nothing less from the elite group of experienced drivers on the MedTrans Tracy team.
“Our drivers know the important role
we play in health services delivery,” said Arretche. “We give that extra effort because we recognize that it could be our own family, or friends or community members waiting for the right medical supplies to get through a surgery, or a hospital stay…or just to help them feel better.”
Launched in 2002 with a single truck in Chicagoland, MedTrans has grown to a dedicated network of 1,600 semi-trucks, box trucks and cargo vans and 400 drivers nationwide.
“MedTrans is a differentiator for us,” said Jeff Brennan, senior vice president of operations at Medline. “Within the healthcare supply chain, delivery is the last critical piece in getting much-needed products to our customers. MedTrans is one real, human touchpoint among the many emerging, high-tech supply chain solutions.”
When weather, mechanical and other unexpected circumstances require custom problem solving for inventory and delivery, the relationships built between MedTrans and our customers stand front and center.”
It’s another way Medline helps healthcare run better.
On March 30th, Medline celebrated the opening of a 650,000-square-foot LEEDcertified distribution center in Hammond, LA. State dignitaries—including Governor John Bel Edwards and Lt. Governor William H. Nungesser—joined leaders from Tangipahoa Parish and the city of Hammond, Medline team members and customers for a ribboncutting event at the distribution center. Major hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare providers in the region also took part in the event, which included remarks from officials and facility tours.
“We are grateful to Louisiana, Tangipahoa Parish and Hammond for welcoming us to this wonderful community,” said Steve Miller, Medline executive vice president of supply chain, “And we pledge to continue to be good neighbors, great corporate citizens and real advocates for improving healthcare delivery in this state and region.”

Limited launch unveils moving billboards on five semi-trailers
Next time you see a Medline truck on the road, you may notice something different: It has a whole new design. In addition to our logo and “We make healthcare run better™” tagline, five regional trucks have been selected for a makeover to help spread awareness of who Medline is. The illustrations featured on both sides of the 53-foot-long trailers convey how we make healthcare run better, focusing on our customers’ unique needs and the products and solutions we deliver every day, designed to help them provide their best care. We hope to add this new design to more of the MedTrans fleet in the future.
nursing homes, ambulatory surgery centers, hospices and physicians’ offices. The Hammond facility is expected to handle more than $200 million in annual orders.
“As a leading private provider of medical supplies, Medline is a fine example of how we continue to diversify the Louisiana economy with innovative industries,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said. “Healthcare continues to grow as a vital economic sector, and this region’s skilled workforce and logistical advantages should serve Medline well as it supplies hospitals and nursing homes across Louisiana and neighboring states. We are happy to welcome Medline to Tangipahoa Parish.”
The Hammond distribution center is a part of Medline’s $2+ billion Healthcare Resilience Initiative, a national, multi-year capital expenditure campaign that includes new distribution centers, manufacturing capabilities and information technology upgrades to further our commitment to delivering superior customer service and improving healthcare services delivery.

I remember the exact moment I realized how close I was to Medline’s products. While I was working as a consultant with Medline, my son was diagnosed with cancer—a parent’s nightmare. Checking into the clinic at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia (CHOP) feeling sick to my stomach and barely able to talk, I looked at the tissue box on the counter and saw the Medline logo. Fast-forward two weeks, my son had a vascular port put in for chemotherapy. Every time we were in the hospital, the nurse brought the kit to access it and again I saw the Medline logo. As a mom supporting her son through cancer treatment during a pandemic, I conducted my meetings with Medline from my son’s hospital room. When he was discharged and sent home with bags of hydration fluids and tubing, again I was surrounded by Medline. I had never felt so connected to the work I was doing. Just after my son’s bone marrow transplant at the University of Michigan, I was offered a position with Medline. I jumped on the opportunity, and today I’m so proud to work with a company that helped me support my family and, more importantly, helped our healthcare professionals save my son’s life.
Kiersten McAvoy IS, Informational GovernanceWhen I had kidney surgery, I saw Medline products all over my hospital room at Stanford Hospital. Since I needed gauze, tape and adhesive remover, I ordered them when I came home from the hospital. I also used Medline's sensitive tape since my skin was sensitive to the tape the hospital provided. Working in Customer Service, it's always nice to relate to customers when they ask about the Medline products I've used before.
Cynthia Vazquez Customer ServiceMy grandfather was put into a wheelchair a number of years back due to his weak knees. Since he spent most of his time in that chair, it was crucial that it was comfortable. He was given a Medline chair, and it gave me such joy once I started at the company to know he was using one of our products. I continued to purchase cushions to make him as snug as possible. He eventually had an adjustable hospital bed with a Medline mattress that he found to be very supportive. Seeing him using products from the company I work for gave us both a sense of immense joy and pride.

Andrew Pajak Senior Product Manager, Textiles DivisionAbout a month after starting at Medline, I tore my Achilles tendon playing football! I scored the touchdown but knew something was seriously wrong with my foot. I went to urgent care, and they recommended surgery immediately to repair the tendon. When I arrived at the surgery center, a Medline truck was unloading supplies. I knew I was in good hands! During the pre-op procedure, I got to see a bunch of Medline items from my division, and I talked with the surgeons and nurses about the products. It was awesome knowing the items I work with on a daily basis were used for my surgery. I am fully recovered, and I am thankful Medline provides high-quality products!
Maz Siddiqui Operating Room, Division 15I have borrowed a Medline Transport Chair so my mom could go to Lincoln Park Zoo with our family. I purchased a turtle nebulizer for my kids, which alleviated any fears about using it. Having kids, the SilvaSorb gel always comes in handy as it heals cuts and stops burning sensations so fast! The Medline folding chairs are always comfy in the summer/fall to use when we're outside watching kids practice baseball. I can go on forever, but the last thing is the awesome Medline gear like the beanie.
Jeffrey De Torres QualityWith his Medline rollator, Grandpa John was able to help his great-granddaughter Evelyn practice some of her first steps down the halls of his assisted living facility.

“My entire 25-year career at Medline has been spent in Inventory Management. It has grown from 18 employees to >200 people in this time. I could have never imagined that my tenure here would have lasted this long when it began, but with the phenomenal growth of the business, the ever-increasing complexity of our supply chain and the incredible people from which I have been fortunate to learn, it has been such a rewarding journey. ”
