5th Cairo Video Festival

Video Art & Experimental films Opening Wednesday, 25 September 2013 at 7 pm Daily from 25 September to 7 October 2013, Except Fridays Loop videos from 4 to 7 pm Screening program from 7 to 10 pm

Over span of two weeks, the festival presents a diverse program of experimental film and video art from all around the world. The selection was made from hundreds of received applications to highlight recent experiments in these fields. The screenings are followed by special sessions led by guest filmmakers and program curators to present their work and discuss it with the audience.

The 5th Cairo Video Festival seeks to becomes a platform for all those experimenting with the medium of film and video.

EGYPT X BERLIN

A video art project in cooperation with Khaled Hafez and BTK University of Applied Sciences in Berlin

From April to July, 2013, 25 students of the BTK University of Applied Sciences (Berlin) created audio-visual works focusing on the topic “Egypt in Berlin”. There were no given boundaries so the students were free to choose a personal theme and to use technologies and methods of their choice. The results are 11 very different videos gathered under the headline “EGYPT X BERLIN”.

Khaled Hafez, one of the best-known contemporary artists in Egypt, was enthusiastic about the project from the very first beginning and visited Berlin three times to mentor and support the BTK students during the development of the works. The production of the videos was guided and monitored by the BTK professors Claudia Rohrmoser and Christian Mahler.

EGYPT X BERLIN was part of the accompanying program of the touring exhibition “TUTANKHAMUN – His Tomb and his Treasures” in Berlin, the capital of Germany. All videos were exclusively shown from July 19th until September 1st, 2013 at the foyer of the exhibition.

“TUTANKHAMUN – His Tomb and his Treasures” was produced by the German company Semmel Concerts, which runs the exhibition since 2008.

It was seen by more than 4.5 million visitors in Europe and Asia, and is currently on display in Prague and Geneva. Since the beginning Semmel Concerts supports the cultural dialogue between Egypt and Germany by inviting Egyptian artists, speakers, writers, thinkers and exhibitions to the tour destinations.

About Khaled Hafez Khaled Hafez is born in Cairo in 1963 where he currently lives and works.

He studied medicine and followed the evening classes of the Cairo fine arts in the eighties. After attaining a medical degree in 1987 and M.Sc. as a medical specialist in 1992, he gave up medical practices in the early nineties for a career in the arts. He later obtained an MFA in new media and digital arts from Transart Institute (New York, USA) and Danube University Krems (Austria).

Hafez practice spans the mediums of painting, video, photography, installation and interdisciplinary approaches. His artwork has been exhibited at biennales like Manifesta 8 as well as those in Havana, Bamako, Mercosur, Cairo, Thessaloniki, Singapore, Sharjah and Dakar, to name but a few, and can be seen at renowned galleries and museums around the world.

About BTK The BTK University of Applied Sciences is a private, officially recognised University of Design, located in Berlin. BTK inspires challenges and trains the creative minds of the future in two Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs – Communication Design and Photography – as well as in the Master of Arts (M.A.) study program Design / Media Spaces.

The rapid digitalization of media has changed the professional role of designers during the last twenty years, making it more challenging and more varied. At BTK, modern design is combined with the traditional aspects of applied art and the innovative possibilities of new media. BTK offers interdisciplinary study programs, which enable students to explore the interface of both analogue and digital means of visual expression, and in so doing, help them to influence and determine the future of design.

Michel Klares / Lisa Lemke / Lucca Pikal / Veronika Schreiber / Anna von Ledebur A hybrid film/animated fantastic fiction dealing about the problem that huge amounts of Egyptian art treasure are spread (and possibly unrightfully) all over the world. In their film, the Egyptian antiques are brought back to Egypt by some weird teleportation process, where they materialize into a complete and glorious pharaoh’s body. They might take this as a reference to the destiny of Osiris (his body parts being spread all over Egypt).

The student was shocked about the environmental disaster in the Red Sea caused by tourism. Feeling guilty herself, the animator tells a story about a cartoon dugong that faces the downfall of sea life, replaced by garbage and - literally - shit.

It takes the endless metamorphosis (day-night cycle) inherent in the myth of the god Re as a motive. Starting with an everyday Berlin sunset, they use the animals’ heads of the three beds of meht-weret, ammut and isis-mehtet (lion, hippopotamus and cow) as a vehicle to tell their story.

It deals with the passage between life and death. With hybrid creatures (godhumans) they re-enact a ritual session inside a virtual tutanchamun grave, using high end visual effects, 3D animation and greenscreen footage. The story shows the episode of weighing the heart against a feather, deciding where the dead pharao will take his journey to.

A collaboration between a fashion photographer and a motion designer. They produce a colorful kaleidoscope, comparing Berlin style with ancient Egyptian designs, finding their own visual path through different (ore identical?) ideals of beauty.

A documentary in an Egyptian cafe/restaurant in Berlin, where Berlin-based Egyptians meet and where they find their expat community center.

“I was supposed to make a video about Egypt, so I googled it.”

The format of the film is a mockumentary with an Alien background story - the story has to been seen against the background of unjustness of extreme luxury, both in the pharao’s times where slaves had to sweat and suffer for the wealth of the gods and today, where luxury market is growing on the expense of a huge amount of poor and underprivileged people.

‫قام خمس وعرشون طالباً بجامعة برلني للعلوم التطبيقية (برلني) بإنتاج أعامل برصية ‪ -‬صوتية‬ ‫يف الفرتة من أبريل‪ ،‬وحتى يوليو ‪ ٢٠١٣‬تركز عىل موضوع “مرص يف برلني” مل توضع لتلك األعامل‬ ‫أي أطر أو حدود‪ ،‬وكان للطلبة الحق يف اختيار مادة العمل‪ ،‬واستخدام ما يختارونه ويرونه‬ ‫مناسباً من املناهج‪ ،‬والوسائط‪ ،‬ووسائل التكنولوچيا‪ .‬وكانت النتيجة ‪ ١١‬عمل ڤيديو مختلفة‬ ‫فيام بينها اختالفاً كبريا ً‪ ،‬وتحمل جميعها عنوان “مرص ‪ x‬برلني”‬ ‫خالد حافظ‪ ،‬أحد أبرز الفنانني املعارصين املعروفني يف مرص‪ ،‬كان متحمساً للمرشوع منذ بداياته‬ ‫األوىل‪ ،‬وقام بزيارة برلني ثالث مرات بوصفه مرشفاً‪ ،‬وداعامً لطلبة جامعة برلني أثناء إنجازهم‬ ‫لألعامل‪ .‬وقد تم إنتاج األعامل بإرشاف وتوجيه األساتذة‪ /‬كالوديا رورموزير وكريستيان مالر من‬ ‫جامعة برلني للعلوم التطبيقية‪.‬‬ ‫مرص ‪ x‬برلني كان جزءا ً من الربنامج املصاحب للمعرض الزائر “توت عنخ آمون ‪ -‬مقربته وكنوزه“‬ ‫يف برلني‪ ،‬عاصمة أملانيا‪ .‬وقد تم عرض هذه الڤيديوهات فقط يف الفرتة من ‪ ١٩‬يوليو وحتى ‪١‬‬ ‫سبتمرب يف مدخل املعرض‪.‬‬ ‫“توت عنخ آمون ‪ -‬مقربته وكنوزه” من إنتاج الرشكة األملانية سي ّميل كونسريتس‪ ،‬والتي تدير‬ ‫هذا املعرض منذ ‪ .٢٠٠٨‬وقد زار هذا املعرض ما يزيد عن ‪ ٤،٥‬مليون زائر يف أوروبا وآسيا‪ ،‬وهو‬ ‫موجود يف الوقت الراهن يف براغ وچينيڤ‪ .‬وتدعم رشكة سي ّميل كونسريتس منذ البداية الحوار‬ ‫الثقايف بني مرص وأملانيا من خالل دعوة العديد من الفنانني‪ ،‬واملتحدثني‪ ،‬والكتاب‪ ،‬واملفكرين‬ ‫املرصيني‪ ،‬وكذلك من خالل دعوة املعارض إىل رحالت عاملية‪.‬‬ ‫عن خالد حافظ‬ ‫ولد خالد حافظ عام ‪ ١٩٦٣‬يف القاهرة حيث يعيش ويعمل حالياً‪ .‬درس الطب‪ ،‬وانتظم يف‬ ‫الدراسة املسائية يف كلية الفنون الجميلة يف الثامنينات من القرن املايض‪ .‬وبعد انتهائه من‬ ‫دراسة الطب‪ ،‬وحصوله عىل درجة املاچستري عام ‪ ،١٩٩٢‬ترك مهنة الطب يف بداية التسعينات‬ ‫واتجه إلحرتاف الفن‪ .‬حصل عىل ماچستري الفنون يف فنون الوسائط الجديدة والرقمية من‬ ‫معهد “ترانسارت” نيويورك‪ ،‬الواليات املتحدة األمريكية وجامعة الدانوب يف كرميس (النمسا)‬ ‫ميارس خالد حافظ طيفاً متسعاً من الفنون متتد من الرسم والڤيديو لتشمل األعامل املركبة‪،‬‬ ‫والتداخالت البينية للوسائط‪ .‬وقد عرضت أعامله يف العديد من فعاليات البينايل مثل مانيفيستا‬ ‫‪ ،٨‬وهاڤانا‪ ،‬وباماكو‪ ،‬ومريكوزور‪ ،‬القاهرة‪ ،‬ثيسالونييك‪ ،‬سنغافورة‪ ،‬الشارقة ودكار وغريها‪ .‬وميكن‬ ‫رؤية أعامله يف الكثري من املعارض واملتاحف املرموقة حول العامل‪.‬‬

‫جامعة برلني للعلوم التطبيقية (برلني)‬ ‫هي جامعة خاصة للعلوم التطبيقية‪ ،‬وهي معروفة رسمياً بإسم جامعة التصميم‪ ،‬وتوجد‬ ‫يف برلني‪ .‬تلهم الجامعة طلبتها بالتحديات‪ ،‬وتدرب امللكات اإلبداعية يف عقول املستقبل يف‬ ‫برنامجني لدرجتي البكالوريوس يف الفنون (علم تصميم االتصاالت والتصوير)‪ ،‬واملاچستري‬ ‫(التصميم ووسائط الفراغ)‬ ‫لقد غيرّ ت رقمنة الوسائط اإلعالمية من الدور املهني للمصمم خالل العرشين سنة األخرية‪،‬‬ ‫وأكسبته تحديات غري مسبوقة‪ ،‬ومتنوعة‪ .‬ويف جامعة برلني للعلوم التطبيقية يتالحم التصميم‬ ‫الحديث مع املداخل التقليدية ملادة التصميم‪ ،‬واإلمكانات التحديثية للوسائط اإلعالمية‬ ‫الجديدة‪ .‬وتعرض الجامعة برامج تجمع يف دراستها الوسائط املتداخلة‪ ،‬مام يتيح للطلبة التعرف‬ ‫عىل املدخلني “املوجي” و”الرقمي” للتعبري البرصي‪ ،‬وبذلك تساعدهم عىل التأثريعىل وتحديد‬ ‫مستقبل التصميم‪.‬‬

‫مهرجان القاهرة الخامس للفيديو‬ ‫فنون الفيديو‪ ،‬أفالم تجريبية‬

‫اإلفتتاح يوم األربعاء ‪ 25‬سبتمرب ‪ 2013‬الساعة ‪ 7‬مسا ًء‬ ‫يومياً من ‪ 25‬سبتمرب إىل ‪ 7‬اكتوبر ‪ ،2013‬عدا الجمعة‬ ‫معرض الفيديو من ‪ 4‬مسا ًء إىل ‪ 7‬مسا ًء‬ ‫برنامج األفالم من‪ 7‬مسا ًء إىل ‪ 10‬مسا ًء‬

‫عىل مدى أسبوعني يقدم املهرجان برامج متنوعه ألفالم تجريبية وفنون الفيديو من مختلف أنحاء العامل‪،‬‬ ‫أختريت هذه األعامل من مئات األفالم التي تقدمت للمهرجان كنامذج مختلفة للمبدعني بهدف مطالعة‬ ‫التجارب الحديثة اإلنتاج يف هذا املجال‪ ،‬ويتيح املهرجان أيضاً الفرصة للقاء مع بعض صناع الفيديو‬ ‫ومنسقي الربامج لتقديم أعاملهم ومناقشتها مع الجمهور‪.‬‬ ‫كام يسعى املهرجان للتقريب بني مجاالت الفيديو اإلبداعية املختلفة ويهتم بعرض كافه أنواع التجريب‬ ‫عرب الفيديو والفيلم‪.‬‬ ‫تم دعم مهرجان القاهرة الخامس للفيديو من الصندوق العريب للثقافة والفنون‪ ،‬ومؤسسة ملبادرات الفنون‪،‬‬ ‫وسيميل كونسريت‪.‬‬
