Some Tips that will Help to Maintain Your Car Starter Motor

The starter motor is the device responsible for cranking up the engine in order to make it run by itself.

The car battery sends an electric current to the starter motor so that it can start the engine and this process occurs whenever you start up your car by turning the key in the ignition.

The starter motor greatly depends on the integrity of other components within the electrical system to stay functional.

Here are some tips to maintain your car starter motor for a long period of time.

Keep the connectors clean

The battery and starter motor are connected through a series of special connector wires.

A corrosion on the connectors or any other type of dirt or grime will limit the strength of the electric current that is sent to the starter relay.

This will make it nearly impossible for the motor to generate enough power to fully crank the engine and will ruin the integrity of the motor, causing it to become excessively worn out.

Keep the mounting bolts tight

The starter motor is held in place with mounting bolts and when these mounting bolts become too loose, then the drive of the starter and the flywheel fail to engage each other.

One symptom of loose bolts is a grinding sound whenever you try to start the engine.

In order to avoid such problem, you should periodically check to make sure the mounting bolts on the starter motor are tightened.

Keep the solenoid clean

The solenoid is the starter relay of the motor which rests on the top of the motor and appears as a small cylindrical object.

The positive battery cable from the battery is attached to the solenoid and it behaves as the positive battery terminal.

And like the terminal, the solenoid needs to be cleaned and kept away from any dirt, corrosion, and debris.

Keep the terminals clean

The battery terminals often gets covered with corrosion as the battery acids produce hydrogen gas, which will eventually find its way out of the battery.

These gases form the corrosive materials that get deposited on a battery and its terminals after a couple of years.

When the terminals are covered, then the electric current which is sent from the battery to the starter motor gets weakened.

Lastly

Previously, cars used to only have hydraulic starter motors in them, but the newer cars rely more on electric starter motors.

Therefore, you need to maintain the electrical system of your vehicle, if you want to ensure that your starter motor remains durable and lasts for a long time.
