Not even among Brazilians themselves is possible to find someone who has already uncovered all of the most diverse and distant corners of this destination. If you’ve been to the South and seen the beautiful beaches of Santa Catarina, its mountains and theme parks, then you have to visit the Iguaçu Falls, in Paraná, or Gramado, in Rio Grande do Sul. Rio de Janeiro, well, Rio de Janeiro needs no introduction, because it Brazil’s best-known destination throughout the whole world. There is also the particular beauty of the use of concrete in the Federal District created by the genius architect, Oscar Niemeyer and the charms of nature in its purest form in the Pantanal, in Mato Grosso do Sul. Speaking of nature, there is nothing more conducive than the beautiful landscapes of the Amazon and Pará, in the Northern region, with their rivers and forests. There is so much to discover in Brazil, with options for all travel profiles, whether for the more adventurous, for families, for those who like to experience new cultures, for gastronomy and even for those who just want to relax and rest. In recent years, the country has greatly expanded its capacity to receive visitors with some new airports and others heavily renovated. Hotels have been inaugurated, new chains have arrived in the country, but the Brazilian hospitality continues. Over the next pages, you can learn, review or find out a little about all of this. To make it easier for our readers, we have separated out the best of what Brazil has to offer, a country that remains with open arms to welcome tourists from all over the world. Happy reading!

Discover the mysteries and beauty of Cariri Located in the south of Ceará, Cariri is known mainly for its religion, culture and craftsmanship. The region is divided into three main cities: Juazeiro do Norte, Crato and Barbalha but other cities, such as Santana do Cariri and Nova Olinda, also stand out. Known as the Land of Father Cícero, Cariri is one of the popular regions for religion in Brazil, attracting more than 2.5 million pilgrims per year. With natural beauties, important history and colonial architecture, the desti-

nation counts on plural options that approach diverse tourism segments. During the month of June the state is taken over by the June festivals. Everywhere the local beat, forró, delights the residents and visitors - dressed in traditional clothes – that fill the squares with music, dance, traditional food and colourful decorations. One of the main festivities is the Santo Antônio Party, better known as the Pau da Bandeira Festival, held over 85 years in Barbalha.

Crato

Located at the foot of the Araripe Plateau (Chapada do Araripe), the city of Crato is known as the “Oásis do Sertão” (Oasis of the Countryside) due to its climatic characteristics. One of the cities with the greatest cultural richness of Ceará, to this day preserves artistic displays of the time of the Kariris, Aquijiro, Guariú, Xocó, Quipapaú Indians and many other tribes that once inhabited the region. Pastorals, violinists, local bands (bandas cabaçais), flute groups, as well as popular masters in string and woodcuts are some examples of Crato’s cultural expressiveness. On the border of Ceará and Pernambuco, the Araripe Plateau is a great place to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the state. The reserve gathers natural sources, caves and

paleontological sites in an area of more than 4,700km2. It is ideal to revitalize the soul with hiking trails, bird watching, waterfalls and other activities focused on ecotourism and adventure tourism. With colonial architecture dating from the 18th century, the Historic Centre of Crato is a tour that explores important monuments that have contributed to the growth of the city. The highlights are the Episcopal Palace, where Father Cícero was born; the Rachel de Queiroz Theatre, built on May 22, 1978; and the Railway Station, an architectonic work of rare beauty, inaugurated on November 8, 1926. Today, the venue next to the Palace of the Station houses a Cultural Centre. Setur-CE

Nova Olinda Nova Olinda is known mainly for being the land of master Espedito Seleiro, who began to make leather products as a child, when he learnt the art of treating and transforming cowhide and goat leather into pieces used by cowboys, such as saddles, belts and whips. One day, tired of so many replica pieces - leather sandals are a tradition in Ceará’s countryside and are sold in any popular market - he saw that he needed to innovate. Using natural products, such as the tincture of the bark of angico, a common tree in the city, he dyed the leather. The new yellow, red, green and purple sandals were successful and Espedito became valued within the fashion, cinema and design world. He has already made pieces for major Brazilian brands and, in 2006, participated in the São Paulo Fashion Week. The artisan still works and strolls through Setur-CE

Nova Olinda, always willing to stop for a chat. Amongst the natural attractions of the area, tourists will find the Furna Pintada Archaeological Site, Ponte da Pedra, Olho D’Água Caves, Pedra da Coruja (Owls Stone) and the Poço do Inferno (Well of Hell). The architecture includes the São Sebastião Church and the Casa Grande Foundation Museum - Kariri Man’s Memorial, a non-governmental, cultural and philanthropic organization created in 1992. Its creation took place after the restoration of Tapera, the first Casa da Fazenda (Farm House) in the city of Nova Olinda, which is a crossing point for cattle across the Cariri to the Sertão dos Inhamuns road, in the period of the leather civilization, at the end of the 17th century.

Santana do Cariri

The city of Santana do Cariri was created in 1885 and has the title of “Local Capital of Paleontology”. It stands out for having a vast paleontological site, where several species of extinct animals have been discovered. It houses the Museum of Paleontology of the Regional University of Cariri and the Cultural House, Felinto da Cruz Neves, which tourists can’t miss. Sightseers are advised to visit the Benigna Memorial and Euroville, a street with traditional houses from several countries in the world. You will even find a small replica of the Eiffel Tower. The Santana do Cariri Paleontology Museum is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, with over 7,000 fossils of fish, insects, reptiles, amphibians and plants.

The sunset from the panoramic view offered from Pontal de Santa Cruz is one of the most beautiful picture postcards that visitors can take home. From Pontal, tourists can observe the Araripe Plateau. Santana do Cariri also stands out for its hand made products in the Santanense Association of Artisan Support. Tourists can purchase typical handicrafts made of lace, embroidery, leather, pottery and paint. In gastronomy, the highlight is the Cabidela chicken (chicken blood rice). Museum of paleontology

The second largest city in Ceará, Juazeiro do Norte, is 491km from Fortaleza and is known for religious tourism. The destination was for some years the home of Father Cícero, who was famous for his miracles of turning wafer into blood and even for helping in the independence and liberation of the city, becoming the greatest spiritual leader of the hinterland people. Today, the city is one of the three largest centres of popular religion in Brazil, together with Aparecida and Nova Trento, attracting more than 2.5 million pilgrims per year. Consequently, the area has a unique itinerary for those who wish to follow in the footsteps of “Padim Ciço”, as Father

Cícero is known: the “Pilgrims Way” (Caminhos dos Romeiros). With several tourist attractions related to the saint, one of the most important is the Horto Hill, which houses the statue of Father Cícero, the Living Museum of Father Cícero, the Church of Senhor Bom Jesus do Horto and the 2,650m trail that leads to the Holy Sepulchre. To know more about North-eastern culture the Juazeiro do Norte is an omissible Popular Culture Centre, which has exhibitions, handicrafts, typical cuisine, a stage for folk performances, cordel literature and other events. Rio Grande do Norte:

The best of Northeast begins here! A giant state even by name! Rio Grande (big) do Norte is infinite in natural beauties and tourist attractions. It has very distinct regions where you can find all sorts of wonderful places, ranging from paradisiacal beaches to mountains with mild temperatures, which is very inviting for the adventurous among us. Reaching this pearl of the north-eastern region is easy, with direct flights from various state capitals in the country and abroad. You will land in Natal, a welcoming city full of charm. Morro do Careca, on Ponta Negra Beach, is one of the most photographed attractions and is seen on nearly all postcards, but the state capital of Rio Grande do Norte has much more to offer. Dunes give life to Dunas Park, which along with the sea, form a perfect setting beside the Coastal Way, where most of the hotels are located. To make your life easier, we have prepared an itinerary for you that passes through the tourist centres of the state. Choose your destinations that are sure to delight you!

Dromedaries in Genipabu

Costa Branca Hub A route of dunes, cliffs and beautiful landscapes starts here The Costa Branca (White Coast) has pristine beaches, where the vegetation of the countryside meets the sea, the colourful dunes and the cliffs. Soledade Beach, in the oil prospecting area is worth a visit. It has a different look, resulting from the constant burning of the gases from the oil exploration. At night, the torches of fire become a tourist attraction in themselves. In Porto do Mangue the main attraction is the pink dunes, cliffs and deserted beaches. Another must-see is Ponta do Mel Cove, with its dunes and cliffs, the natural pools of São Cristovão Beach and the always shifting dunes of Redonda Beach. You have the possibility of having a go at some extreme sports on Upanema Beach; visiting the port of Areia Branca, which exports tons of salt produced in the region; and in Grossos, the second largest cashew tree in the world (the first is in Pirangi, very close to Natal) is worth a visit. Do not miss Galinhos, a secluded peninsula with friendly people, mangroves, calm waters, immense dunes, a lagoon and salines (sea salt production). There are no cars here and to arrive, you need to take a boat and, once here, take one of the carts to travel around. The huge wind turbines are prominent amidst the dunes, giving it a very different image. The beach of Tibau is the last one on the state’s coast. Here, you will find the famous little bottles with delicate designs of coloured sands. They are made here and make a perfect souvenir to keep or to give as a present. 14 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | WTM l London l November 2017

The Costa Branca Hub still promotes the city of Assú, with its rich historical house; and Macau, which captivates with its immense salt dunes.

Mossoró: the capital of the West It is also impossible not to speak of Mossoró, the “capital of the West”, which in the coming months will reopen operations at its airport, facilitating tourist and business access in the region. Oil, fruit, salt, goat and shrimp farming make Mossoró one of the fastest growing cities in Brazil; and it is also one of the newest tourist destinations in the Northeast. The demand for the city has increased greatly thanks to great sacred cultural events already hosted here. The main one is the outdoor spectacle “Rain of Bullets in the Country of Mossoró”. Thousands of people participate and it tells the story of the heroic defence of the inhabitants against the invasion of cangaceiros (bandits) led by Lampião, in 1927. The festival of St. John in Mossoró lasts all of June and is already one of the largest in the country, rivalling the traditional festivals of Campina Grande and Caruaru. Other parties also attract a lot of people. The most exciting of them is the Auto da Liberdade, which has the largest street theatre show in the world, according to the Guiness Book of Records. The city is located 40km from the coast and close to the beautiful beaches of Tibau, Grossos and Areia Branca. Put the thermal pools of Thermas Hotel on your list to visit.

Seridó Hub Nature-based ecotourism starts here Seridó is a region full of tradition and history. The courage of the rednecks resist the inclement semi-arid climate. Before, the prehistoric natives left their mark with ancient rock drawings scattered in many places. Recently the region has shown its vocation for ecotourism and is perfect to visit, whether in winter with rivers and full ponds, or in summer, with the rustic landscape of the caatinga (local desert vegetation). The cuisine brings Iberian recipes and Arab influence, which are also present in the handcrafts of the area. The embroidery are true works of art. The Brejuí Mine in the city of Currais Novos, formerly an ore exporter, is transforming the old Scheelite mines into tourist areas. Here one of the seven wonders of the state is located: the Apertados Canyon, millenary stone corridors on the riverbed of the Acauã river. Another attraction is the Serra de Santana, in the city of Lagoa Nova, perfect for extreme sports. The climate is cooler and there are guesthouses with good infrastructure. This is an ideal place for nature lovers, there are mountain bike tours, trails, rappelling and it is also possible to go hang gliding. Possibilities are endless and you can invent other adventures as well. The city of Acari, with the beautiful Gargalheiras dam (another wonder of the state and has appeared in famous national films) is considered one of the cleanest cities in Brazil. Caicó is the largest city in the region. It is surrounded by mountains such as Samanaú, which gives its name to a local cachaça, considered as one of the best in the country. When you book a few days in Seridó, do not forget to visit the archaeological sites that show human presence from more than 13,000

years ago, not forgetting the rock inscriptions that date back more than 10,000 years. There are drawings of hunting, dancing, and day-to-day life. So put Carnaúba dos Dantas on your itinerary. The city still presents you with a setting, worthy of being in a film: the Castle of Bivar. Located at the top of a hill, it enchants with its traces that go back to the French Renaissance period. If you like mountainous views, you cannot fail to miss, Parelhas. The city has managed to unite some of the most beautiful mountains, such as Queimadas, Coruja, Marimbondo and Areia. If you like sports you can save your energy for hiking, trekking, going on jeep tours and horse riding. To relax at the end of the day, make sure you have some time left for a swim in the weir at Barraque do Boqueirão. The most important river in the state, Potengi, is located in Seridó, in the city of Cerro Corá, where you will also find the Volcanic Valley with natural pools and the Eloy de Souza Dam, built in 1937. Costa das dunas Hub A privileged sun and sea destination starts here Let’s go to the south of the state! You can choose to go by sea, venturing across rivers on ferries, or by land, taking the BR 101 road. Whatever way you choose, go to Tibau do Sul, a privileged place, which, besides being bathed by the sea, it still has the Guaraíras Lake, with its unique mangrove swamp. We have to write about the most famous beach in this city, Pipa, which is frequented by people from all over the world. It has become super international; and is only 80km from Natal. It is always ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, and this is for a reason, as it really is breath-taking. In the 70’s, it was a favourite spot for surfers and hippies. Today, Pipa can be a simple yet chic place with local crafts and famous designer shops. But the best, undoubtedly, is the exuberant nature, a true retreat with preserved beaches, cliffs and reserves of Atlantic forest. At night, the city is busy. The main street, in the centre, is small for so many people. Enjoy the nightclubs and the best of the state’s gastronomy, with characteristic and international cuisine, in numerous restaurants, bars, pubs, bistros and pizzerias that cater for all palates. Formosa Bay: the name says it all! Charming (Formosa) does not do this small piece of paradise justice. Formosa Bay is a beautiful cove, a paradise for surfers and Eco tourists alike. It gathers the meekness of a fishing village, virgin beaches, preserved Atlantic forest and

some tourist infrastructure with kiosks, bars, guesthouses and cottages by the sea. Buggy rides lead to the semi-deserted beach of Sagi, on the border with the State of Paraíba. With a bit of luck it is possible to spot a manatee in the preservation area. It is worth visiting the Mata Estrela Reserve. It is the largest reserve of Atlantic forest in the state, with almost 2000 hectares preserved by the sea. It still has monkeys, marmosets, ancient trees and many endangered species of the North-eastern region’s fauna and flora. You can access Formosa Bay on the BR 101 road, crossing the sugar cane plantations, or by buggy, along the coast, starting from Pipa and crossing the river by ferry. Oh, do not forget to take a dip in the Araraquara Lagoon, known as the Coca Cola lagoon, because of its dark colour. São Miguel do Gostoso: sailors paradise If you like quiet beaches, then you will love São Miguel do Gostoso. It is a paradise for local, national and even international sailors. It’s perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing and considered one of the best in the Americas that’s why it attracts an increasing number of sportsmen from all over the world. The city has many guesthouses and several bars and restaurants with rich and diverse cuisine. The Gostoso Tourist Terminal, located on Xêpa beach, is one of the attractions of the area. Maxaranguape: love, fishing, diving The lighthouse of São Roque Cape is one of the postcards of

the coast of Maxaranguape. It has destinations like the beach of Maracajaú, as well as Barra de Maxaranguape, which is popular with surfers and also great for fishing. The tree of love – that looks like two gameleiras (typical tree) “hugging” - is an obligatory stop for tourists. In addition to the beaches, lagoons, dunes, mangroves, river and vineyards that make up the beauty of the region, its beaches are also ideal for windsurfing, jet skiing and scuba diving. Here, stretches of forest are perfect for trekking and horseback riding. Extremoz: dunes, buggies, dromedaries Extremoz integrates the Metropolitan Region of Natal and is formed by beach towns such as Santa Rita, Genipabu and Pitangui. The diversity of its coastline makes Extremoz a destination rich in tourist activities: from the famous dunes of Genipabu, with buggy or dromedary (Arabian camel) rides, to the beauty of the preserved Atlantic forest, with mangroves, archaeological sites and ponds. You can choose from many water sports or take an ultralight flight here. The cultural richness is due to the countless religious festivities, besides the traditional June festivals, as well as handicrafts (pieces adorned in colourful sand and loom mats). Extremoz also has some important historical monuments, such as the Matriz de São Miguel, which is considered as one of the most beautiful churches of colonial architecture in the state. Agreste Trairí Hub The Religious Tourism and Serras’ Route start here Santa Cruz is the hub city of the Trairi region. It is 115km from Natal and has the largest Christian religious statue in the world, a project conceived by the religious population who are devoted to Saint Rita de Cassia, patroness of the city. Alto de Santa Rita, a religious tourist complex, has an area for masses and events, restaurants, parking and the 56m high statue that is taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, and the Statue of Liberty in New York. Sítio Novo: Castle in the Borborema Potiguar’s region Finding a castle on the top of the Serra dos Tapuios is an unusual sight even for the locals. The city of Sítio Novo attracts tourists with the Zé Monte Castle made of limestone, which took more than 20 years to complete. The citizen, Zé Monte, who built the castle, attributes his work to an apparition of Our Lady who ordered him to build the castle and its 13 towers. Serra de São Bento and Monte das Gameleiras: pure charm with adventure tourism The two cities are very charming, welcoming and with great tourism potential, mainly for ecotourism and adventure. In Monte das Gameleiras, you can explore the mountains: Pintada, Navio, Caridade, Milagre and the Pedra do Magalhães; with many possible surrounding areas for horseback riding, trekking, mountain biking and trails through the countyside. In Serra de São Bento, in addition to the natural attractions,

Serrano Hub The mountain route, chilly adventures start here This is the region that boasts the highest altitudes of the state, which allows you to experience a mountain climate in the countryside, ranging from 16 to 22 degrees Celsius and when you consider the location of the state, it is incredible! The geography of the area is significantly littered with mountains and caves, which have made this a favourite destination for lovers of ecotourism and adventure tourism. Paragliding and hang gliders fill the sky with colour and movement. You can also energize yourself by taking a shower in the Pinga Waterfall in Portalegre. In the city, you will be able to enjoy views from several viewpoints. The best-known are those of Bela Vista and Ponta da Serra. Today there are more than 1,000 caves catalogued in Rio Grande do Norte, more than 10% of them with tourist potential for exploration. Only the Serrano Hub has three cities that have caves and an archaeological site: Apodi, Martins and Felipe Guerra. The mountainous climate and the exquisite gastronomy make Gastronomic Festivals possible due to the balanced temperatures in the “north-eastern winter”. In São Miguel, a city high up on the mountain of the same name, everything is pleasant. The mountain vegetation is adorned by ponds and weirs that enchant its visitors. Ecotourism and adventure tourism complete the backdrop setting, a wise choice would be to invest in tours and trails around the region, practice extreme sports in Serra do Serrote Verde, swim and fish in Bonito and the Jacó Dam.

With the gastronomic festival held every year in July, tourism has grown a lot and the locals face a 362km journey to appreciate the many beauties of the city. There is a cable car project under way in the city, which will certainly be one of the great future tourist attractions of the region. There are nice hotels and guesthouses and among the nature attractions are Casa de Pedra, the third largest cave in Brazil, Pedra do Sapo, Pedra Rajada and the Umarizeira waterfall. The belvederes of Canto and Carranca are worth a visit and at night you can see the lights of more than ten nearby cities. Ministry of Tourism

The tourism industry forms part of Brazil’s economic agenda One of the recent achievements by the Ministry of Tourism was putting segments of the industry’s productive chain onto the country’s economic agenda. This is according to the current Tourism minister, Marx Beltrão, who has just completed his first year in the position. The director admits, however, that Brazilian tourism has great potential and still needs to improve. “Tourism in Brazil is beginning to move towards new horizons. We have challenges to overcome, but we are on the right track”, he admits. Beltrão highlights issues such as the recent achievement and subsequent implementation of the Visa Flexibility Program, which comes into force in the country this November and said that beyond Australia, the United States, Canada and Japan, the next country to be included among the beneficiaries may be China. “This was an old issue and making it easier for foreign tourists to visit will certainly attract a greater flow from the countries that emit most tourist to Brazil”, he said. “Australia is the first country to benefit. In January it will be United States’ turn. The system will be all done online and we also want to include the Chinese in the program “, he added. In relation to the aviation sector, the minister criticized the high price of air fares in the country and defended both the reduction of ICMS (taxes) for aviation fuel and the increase of foreign capital in domestic airlines: “This is a program that is in congress and when approved it will certainly increase the competitiveness and give a greater breath to the national airlines”. According to the recent figures of the sector, Brazil occupies the 27th position in the Tourism and Travel Competitiveness Index of the World Economic Forum. The travel and tourism industry continues to play an important role in the national economy. Last year it employed 2.5 million people and projections are up 1.6% this year. According to data from EMBRATUR, tourism generates US$7 billion annually for the economy. The ministry also intends to boost domestic tourism by reaching the 100 million travellers a year mark

Marx Beltrão, minister of Tourism against the current 60 million. For this to happen, there would need to be an improvement in regional tourism. One of the tools to measure the strength of domestic tourism is the new Tourist Map of Brazil that includes new regions, totalling more than 3,285 cities that have tourist vocations. Brazil, after the success of the Olympics in August of last year, remains at a stable level, but is expected to close the year with a reduction in the flow of international tourists. Another item highlighted by the minister was the launch, in the first half of this year, of the “Brazil + Tourism” program, which has several goals to increase the volume of foreign tourists in the country from 6.6 million in 2016 to 12 million in 2022. Trips abroad by Brazilians continue at high levels. In the first eight months of this year, Brazilian expenses abroad totalled US$14.4 billion, an increase of 35% over the same period last year, when they totalled US$9.18 billion. According to data from the Central Bank, Brazilian spending abroad grew 35% in August this year, from US$1.29 billion in 2016 to US$1.74 billion in 2017.

This was the highest value recorded in August of last three years. A lower dollar and the return to economic growth favour purchases and expenses abroad. On the other hand, in the first eight months of the year, foreigners spent US$3.95 billion in Brazil. In August of this year they spent US$455 million in the country. The goal of the Ministry of Tourism is to make annual spending triple in five years. In 2016, it surpassed the US$6 billion barrier. In relation to the European market, Beltrão highlights the great appeal and interest that Brazil arouses in the world market. The country recorded 5,071,788 international landings in the first half of 2017, an increase of 1.97% over the same period last year. In 2016, 4,798,119 international landings were made in the country between January and June. The upward curve of 2017 compared to the previous year is a trend verified from March to June. “This small increase signals that the country is recovering economically. The larger number of landings reveals that people are traveling more, whether for leisure or business, moving the tourism economic chain”, says Marx Beltrão. New flights and more financial resources open the door to the world market One of the Brazilian Tourist Board’s (EMBRATUR) challenges in attracting international tourism has been obtaining more financial resources for the promotion and, at the same time, more flights linking some of the state capitals to the destinations where tourists visit from the most. According to Vinícius Lummertz, president of the board, responsible for the international tourism promotion program, the prospect of advancing these two subjects should generate concrete results in increasing the flow of foreigners. He believes that Brazil has great tourist and cultural attractions, which contribute to the country becoming a world power in the sector. “We are a conservative country, but we must break it and change with it. We need to accept that the reforms of the economy, proposed by the government, are relevant for Brazil to advance economically and socially and, especially, to put tourism under the spotlight. Only with more agile institutions we will be able to face international competition to attract more tourists. Even countries with strong economies and that, traditionally, were extremely industrialized, such as Japan, for example, are setting targets to develop tourism”, he said. The president of EMBRATUR said that, as neighbouring countries are increasingly spending on international promotions and updating their organizational structures, “we act against it”. Lummertz also said that it is necessary to convince all sectors (public and private) to develop the segment. “Argentina last year invested US$36 million, Colombia about US$48 million and Mexico more than US$400 million. All of them have solid and growing international tourism flows. A union between the leaders of the sector is necessary, so that there is greater political motivation around the issues of tourism”, he emphasized. Currently, Brazilian tourism represents 3.7% of GDP, but this number reaches 10% when other services linked to the sector are included. “We have a strong economy internally, but not so strong externally. Tourism, for example, is the fifth item in Brazil’s export balance and we can help the country’s economy more and more”, 22 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | WTM l London l November 2017

Vinicius Lummertz, president of Embratur Lummertz said. The leader is awaiting the transformation of EMBRATUR into a development agency, whose projects pass through Congress. With this, the entity gains more breadth for the implementation of a commercial promotion strategy with the destinations that send most tourists to Brazil. For Lummertz, Brazilian tourism will only be able to compete internationally if there are more financial resources for investment. “ This will only be possible if EMBRATUR is an agency, because being autocratic is extremely restrictive, with a contingent budget. In the current model, we can not hire staff abroad, we can not receive resources from other sources”, he explained. He also highlighted the importance of investing in digital tools in the promotion process. “Identifying the consumption habits of our target audiences and leveraging the promotion through the use of digital technology platforms are necessary measures to reach tourists from distant regions, such as China, for example”, Lummertz said. Regarding new international flights and signed partnership agreements, the current president of EMBRATUR

h a s n o d o u bt t h at t h e s e fa c to rs generate greater competitiveness and accessibility facilities. For example, the Air France-KLM initiative. The Air France-KLM group has chosen the city of Fortaleza as its new hub in the Northeast. Among the innovations announced the highlight is the debut of Joon in Brazil, the new subsidiary of the French company. Starting May 4, 2018, Joon will operate two weekly flights between Paris/CDG and Fortaleza/FOR on board the classic A340-300, with tickets starting at 249 euros. He also cites the agreement between Air Europa and Ryanair: “This will make it easier for Irish airline passengers to fly to Brazil”. The intention of the company’s board is to have a daily flight to the Northeast starting next year, but this will depend on the outlook of the commercial aviation industry. Flights between Recife and Madrid start on December 20th. Regarding the UK market, Vinícius Lummertz confirms that EMBRATUR’s intention is to maintain the current level. “We receive just over 200,000 UK tourists annually and the idea is to maintain this for next year”, he said.

How can you get to Brazil? Even with a reduction in international flights in recent years, there are numerous ways to get to Brazil from the UK. Brazilian and international companies operate flights on routes and there is often a connection on the way. The important thing to be aware of is: there are direct flights only to São Paulo (GRU) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG). All other major Brazilian state capitals, such as Brasilia, Salvador and Belo Horizonte, for example, are only connected to London via a connecting flight. Check out the main options: Latam Brasil and British Airways Starting with Latam Brasil and British Airways, the only companies that operate direct flights between Brazil and England. From São Paulo, both operate daily flights with an average flight time of 11 hours and 15 minutes, while from Rio de Janeiro there are five weekly flights (every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday). For Brazilians who live in other cities in Brazil, it is possible to consider this as the best opportunity to reach London, since it is necessary only a domestic connection to arrive in Guarulhos or Rio de Janeiro and from there to the United Kingdom. The flights are extremely comfortable because two leading companies operate them. TAP Air Portugal Depending on the price and the opportunities that countless commercial airlines provide, sometimes it is more advantageous to make a fast connection in another country in Europe before crossing the Atlantic Ocean towards Brazil. Many people do the following: take a fast flight from any low-cost airline, such as EasyJet, for example, or even by TAP to Lisbon, and from there fly to up to 10 Brazilian cities (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador, Fortaleza, Natal, Porto Alegre, Belém, Brasilia and Belo Horizonte). TAP offers great opportunities to reach different places in Brazil. TAP has daily flights to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Recife. There are also flights to Salvador (5 days a week), Brasília (5), Belo Horizonte (5), Belém (2), Porto Alegre (3) and Fortaleza (6). Other international companies There are other options to get to Brazil, but the route may take a little longer. It is possible to travel with Lufthansa (connecting in Frankfurt), by Air France (Paris), by Alitalia (Rome), by Iberia (Madrid), by SWISS (Zurich), among many other North American and European companies that have operations in England and in Brazil. There is no excuse not to visit Brazil. Be enchanted with our natural beauties, our hospitable people and our first-world tourist infrastructure. Visit Brazil and have fun. Enjoy the most of this travel show.

The sea at Morro de São Paulo

When you arrive in Bahia, straight away you will feel the difference of this state. The warm sun shines in the blue sky, people smile on the streets and great each other with ‘good morning’ in in their charming accent. Characteristics here are exaggerated, colours and smells invade the senses, and make us realize that yes, you are in Bahia! Boasting 1,200km of coastline and more than 300 beaches, the state has the longest coastline in Brazil, as well as some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. With many days of warm sunshine, refreshed by a delicious breeze, the destination offers the best way to relax. Lying in the sand watching the waves break as the sound of the sea echoes, embracing the tourists. A little over 200km from the capital, Barra Grande, on the Maraú Peninsula, is the ideal place to rest, especially if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful place for your holidays. The destination boasts several scarcely occupied beaches, giving a tone of exclusivity to the coast. This is partly because it is difficult access. To get to Barra Grande, take a plane to Ilhéus, drive to Camamu, and finally catch a boat to Barra Grande. It may seem exhausting, but the sunset is worth the wait. Thus, the city breathes the history of Brazil, recounting a little of the discovery and colonization by the Portuguese in its architecture. Strolling through Salvador, especially through the old centre, where the Pelourinho is located, is like crossing a barrier of time and even of space as there is a large resemblance to, Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. Among the main areas of the old part of the city, the Terreiro de Jesus (or Church of the Third Order of Santo Domingo), elected one of the seven wonders of Brazil, is located. It is estimated that more than a ton of gold was used to decorate its interior. Other attractions are the Nossa Senhora dos Pretos Church and the museum of

It was here that the Portuguese landed in 1500, and were enchanted by the Brazilian lands. For those who like axé music and busy places, a good tip is to stay in Porto Seguro. In lha do Aquário, for example, almost every night, several parties and shows take place. Now, those looking for something more tranquil cannot miss Arraial D’Ajuda, Trancoso or the beautiful Caraíva. Hidden between Trancoso and Caraíva is one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil: Espelho Beach. Framed by its green and calm waters, this beach houses natural pools formed by corals during the low tide, the so-called mirror of water, that gives the name to the beach. Besides the beaches, the state has several leisure options, such as Cocó State Park, an environmental preservation area in the middle of the urban area of Fortaleza. For those who like football, it is possible to enjoy the local passion for sport by watching a match at Arena Castelão, one of the venues of the 2014 World Cup. The Central Market is another must-see, the four-storey shopping centre houses dozens of shops that range from typical foods such as chestnut and rapadura (unrefined whole cane sugar), to traditional drinks, clothing, footwear and souvenirs. A little further away from the beaches and the paradisiacal scenery, is another highlight of Ceará: Cariri, a region known mainly for its religion, culture and craftsmanship. During the month of June, the state is taken over by the June festivals. Everywhere the “forró” music animates the residents and visitors who dress up in typical costumes and fill the squares with music, dance, traditional food and a cheerful decoration. In addition to its many possibilities, Ceará is also considered an excellent destination from a connectivity point of view. The state has seven international routes from Pinto Martins Airport, in Fortaleza, the main one being to Lisbon, with daily flights, by TAP. Still in Europe, the city has direct flights to Frankfurt and Milan. In the Americas, the state serves Cayenne and Bogotá, as well as Miami, in the United States.

FORTALEZA Considered as one of the most beautiful state capitals in the country, Fortaleza has the Beira-mar Avenue as its symbol, which has kiosks and stalls for those who want an ice cold drink and seafood. Here you can still choose one of the several establishments that offer almost daily musical attractions and the already traditional comedy shows with popular state artists. It also houses the handicraft fair, where you can buy souvenirs and sample typical foods. For those who like sports, the avenue is one of the best options. The sunset from the Ingleses Bridge is a must-see attraction for those who visit the region. Another attraction is the Dragão do Mar, a cultural complex that houses museums, a library and venues for theatre and cinema.

JERICOACOARA Named the #1 destination in South America and the 3rd in the world by TripAdvisor, Jijoca de Jericoacoara is undoubtedly a tropical paradise. The unique characteristics of the area guarantee the position of one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. Located 300km from Fortaleza, the destination immediately impresses, due to the beauty and simplicity that perfectly matches the large number of existing resources. The beach has about 130 types of accommodation, ranging from simple guesthouses to five-star hotels, as well as pharmacies, markets and other commercial activities that cater to most tourist’s needs. Merging daylight activities with night-time attractions, the city has excellent gastronomic options. Among the main attractions are Pedra Furada, one of Jericoacoara’s best-known postcards located, in the rocky region; the Pôr do Sol Dune and the Azul and Paraíso lagoons, famous for the crystal clear waters and the hammocks that allow tourists to lay down in the water. Access to this paradise has been helped since the first half of this year, once an airport was opened in the city, which already has direct flights from São Paulo and Fortaleza.

Boa Viagem beach is the main one of the capital, Recife

In one of its most recent campaigns, the state of Pernambuco promoted itself as the heart of the northeast. The phrase, that at first might sound pretentious, is nothing more than a statement of its great influence on other states in the region. The highlights are several, in music, dance, accents, joy and, especially, in gastronomy. The destination is notable for its great connectivity, which includes direct flights to Lisbon, Frankfurt, Milan, Miami, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Panama, Lima and Santiago, as well as more than 50 flights to destinations in Brazil. Pernambuco is the seventh most populous state in Brazil and has the tenth largest GDP in the country and according to the state capital, Recife, it is considered the richest and most populous urban concentration in the North-Northeast. The state still has rural tourism with good infrastructure, in cities like Gravatá, Bezerros, Bonito and Saloá, besides important cities in the countryside like Caruaru and Petrolina. But the main attraction of the destination lies on its coast, which has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Stretching for 187km, Pernambuco presents inviting scenarios like Carneiros 36 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | WTM l London l November 2017

and Porto de Galinhas. In this respect the highlight is Fernando de Noronha, considered as one of the most beautiful and most diverse in the world. This is proved by the three awards received from one of the most prestigious tourism magazines of the country, which put the island as one of the best beach destinations in Brazil. But, when speaking about Pernambuco, it is not just the natural beauties, sun and beaches. Carnival here is one of the most essential in Brazil, as are the celebrations of Saint John (São João), which take place in June. Considered as a historical patrimony of humanity, Olinda is one of the main places where festivals and popular parties take place.

Built under the shadow of seven hills, it reserves unparalleled viewpoints, surrounded by rare beauty. As you can imagine, this beauty has attracted dozens of artists from all over Brazil and in Olinda it is possible to visit the workshops and talk to the owners themselves. The beautiful city has good hotels and cozy guesthouses, which offer day use during the carnival days. As soon as you arrive you can see that the destination is plural, with a touch of culture, celebration, history and beautiful landscapes. This mixture makes Pernambuco one of the most sought after destinations in the country, and places tourism as one of its main economic activities. MTur

RECIFE The beauties and traditions begin with the state capital Recife, one of the oldest cities in Brazil and known for its artistic and cultural heritage. Three large rivers divide the city (Capibaribe, Beberibe and Tejipió) and is connected by a large group of bridges, without which it would be impossible to move around. This characteristic of the state capital of Pernambuco provides beautiful boat trips along the rivers that salways run in the late afternoon and evenings. As well as walks along Boa Viagem beach promenade, the most famous in Recife, which is approximately 7km long, and is located in the Boa Viagem neighbourhood (South Zone of the Pernambuco state capital). The city is encircled by Pina Beach, also known as Sport Beach, on one side and Piedade Beach on the other. Boa Viagem Beach is a spectacle for both the visitor and those who are lucky enough to see it from above, due to the barrier of natural reefs that protect it, which are also the origin of the city’s name. The waterfront is also considered a good attraction and there is a park, garden and areas for sport. In the historic part, Recife has some of the oldest churches in the country, São Pedro, Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos (built only for slaves), Nossa Senhora do Carmo and Madre de Deus, all excellently conserved, with their original naves preserved and historical heritage. The city still has good hotel infrastructure and great gastronomic options, with the some of the main national restaurant chains.

Bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, its coastline is approximately 400km long and it is one of the most famous in Brazil. Some of these beaches are internationally known, such as Ponta Negra, with the Morro do Careca; Pipa, with its nightlife, cliffs and dolphins; and Genipabu, with buggy rides. It also has dunes, coconut trees and natural lagoons, offering a great diversity of leisure.

Rio Grande do Norte also has the richness of mangroves, preserved areas of the Atlantic Forest and an environment conducive to diving. This paradisiacal scenery and Sun & Sand tourism is still the most sought after by those who visit the state and want to indulge in the pleasure of doing the bare minimum and enjoying nature. Another great attraction of the state is its natural pools. Formed during low tide, among the coral reefs, the pools are within the parrachos reefs. These holes accumulate sea water which,

heated by the sun, make it suitable for swimming in. Like the water, fish also get trapped in the pools and, failing to get out into the open sea, form natural aquariums. Here, tourists can feed the fish, which are small and medium in size and already accustomed to the close attendance of humans. Genipabu is internationally famous for its beauty and the buggy and dromedary (also called Arabian camel) rides. The waters of the Genipabu beach are warm, calm and clean, excellent for a taking a dip, as well as

Northeast for sailing boat tours and jet skiing. By buggy you can also visit the lagoon, with attractions such as freshwater swimming, pedal boats, kayaks, skibunda (skiing on your backside) and the zip-line, also called aerobunda. Further up the north coast you will find Maracajaú Beach. Surrounded by dunes, coconut trees and lagoons, the main attraction of this beach is the coral reef with crystalline waters that is rich in coral fish, a place suitable for snorkelling. In Tibau do Sul, located in the south of the state, tourists love the ecological diversity, almost deserted beaches frequented by dolphins and turtles, as well as an area composed of dunes, cliffs and natural pools. At its furthest point is the famous Pipa Beach. NATAL Natal, the state capital, is known as the city of the sun, with its warm waters, dunes and coconut trees. The João Vital

city has the purest air in South America and has one of the most beautiful coastlines in Brazil, which extends for more than 400km. There are more than 20 beaches with paradisiacal landscapes and a limpid and calm sea, as well as hospitable people who welcome visitors with open arms. The destination offers summer to visitors the whole year round: there are more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Ponta Negra is the most popular beach in the city, which is good for bathing, with facilities including hotels, restaurants and a busy nightlife. It is here that is the most famous photograph of the city: Morro do Careca, a dune more than 100 meters in height that was once a tourist spot, where you could do skibunda and go on buggy rides. Currently, the site is closed to visitors for preservation. At the beginning of the Coastal Way, you will find the urban beaches of Artistas, Meio (in the North) and the Areia Preta (in the South). The Lighthouse of Galinhos is one of the symbols of the region

SÃO MIGUEL DO GOSTOSO Located 110km from the capital, you will find São Miguel do Gostoso, a paradise for sailors, windsurfers and kite surfers. The city gained fame in the late 90’s and is today one of the main destinations for these water sports. It is exactly on the “corner of the continent”, where it is said that “the wind makes the curve”. The beaches, therefore, have smaller waves and strong winds practically all year round and it has become a paradise for water sport lovers. The beaches of São Miguel do Gostoso are the main attractions of the region: Ponta do Santo Cristo cove is considered the best beach in Brazil for sailing sports; Xepa is the most central, with stores and restaurants; and Maceió is practically uninhabited the whole year round. On its clear sands, few people are seen and some small boats are anchored in the sea. All this makes it the ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity and contact with nature.

Rio de Janeiro has always been in the imagination of tourists. The land of samba, festivals, the bohemian the way of life and beautiful landscapes and now the city has one more string to its bow. After receiving two mega-events and showing all its potential, Rio presents itself as a new destination, more modern, with new attractions and

an extensive hotel network, since the number of the city’s accommodation units has nearly doubled, from 32,000 to 52,000. The adventure should start by exploring the city centre. The neighbourhood was completely revitalized for the Olympics and has become a great place to spend the afternoon. In the Riotur

Port Zone, an artificial lawn invites passers-by to relax, whether watching a show or enjoying the surroundings. A graffiti mural by the Brazilian artist Kobra - the largest urban art mural in Latin America - colours the area in shades of pink, blue, green and orange. This is one of the favourite spots for locals and visitors alike, who cannot walk past by without admiring the wall. Nearby, the Museum of Tomorrow explores futuristic trends and opens a debate on the impact of human actions and influences on the environment. The idea is to think of sustainable, ecological and responsible ways to make for a better future. Interactively, the museum confronts a serious subject in a light and fun format. The Rio Art Museum (MAR), inaugurated in 2013, transformed the former palace of D. JoĂŁo VI into a modern building. Divided into two aeas that are connected by a walkway, the site houses works that tell the history of the capital, in addition to bringing exhibitions and national and international shows. Southeast operates the School of Look, which develops academic programs on art, culture and education and is free to visitors on Tuesdays. Opened at the end of 2016, AquaRio is the city’s first marine aquarium. With an area of 26,000m2, five floors and 28 fish tanks totalling 4.5 million litres of salt water, the attraction is the largest aquarium in Brazil and in South America and boasts more than 3,000 animals from 350 species. The biggest attraction is the Recinto Oceânico (Ocean Enclosure), with 3.5 million litres of water and a depth of 7m, the public have the chance to walk through the tank via an underwater tunnel, which gives the feeling of diving with fish, rays and the dreaded sharks. For the little ones, AquaRio organizes the “Sleeping in the Aquarium”, intended for children from the age of six. In this program it is possible to spend the night in the depths. Another attraction is the so-called touch tanks, which offer a unique opportunity to get

even closer to aquatic beings and touch stingrays and sharks. The other rooms host species such as surgeonfish, grouper, whiting, catfish, lionfish, bamboo shark, moray eels and the white reef shark, among others. The area is still home to the Science Museum, which has permanent and temporary exhibitions related to the marine and aquatic environment; and the Surf Museum, which presents the trajectory of the sport in Brazil. If you would like go behind the scenes and see how everything works then the aquarium offers a guided tour. Another new attraction is the RioZoo, in São Cristóvão. Spread across 55,000m2 and with more than 1,300 animals, the zoo has been completely revitalized. Among the new attractions is the Play Zone, an area with varied activities, like climbing walls and zip lines; plus a second free play area with anti-stress garden facilities. Another popular spot is the Little Farm (Fazendinha), where children can interact

with animals, suckling goats, giving straw to the cows and feeding the rabbits, as well as walking with ponies and learning more about the Brazilian fauna. The nursery is also open to visitors, so the public can interact and discover how the animals that are born in RioZoo are treated. One of the most famous stadiums in the world, the Maracanã also underwent renovations to host the World Cup and the Olympics. The venue, which is open to visitors, was the venue for the opening of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio. In addition, the stadium has already been the centrepiece for games that have been etched into history, such as the 1950 World Cup final between Brazil and Uruguay, with an attendance of 199,000 fans, the largest football match in history.

Paulista Avenue is one of the symbols of the metropolis

The sixth largest city in the world with 13 million inhabitants, S찾o Paulo is a city of superlatives. The city is represented by more than 70 nationalities, which coexist in harmony, making it the most diverse in Brazil. There are more than 3 million immigrants who are descendants from mainly Italians and Portuguese, although there are also strong influences from American Indians and Africans, not to mention Arabs, Germans, Spanish and Japanese. It is a cradle of diversity, with the state boasting the most varied tourism options, offering a complete experience to its visitors. The destination unites attractions, culture and entertainment to suit all tastes and preferences, an unparalleled variety of options that will leave any tourist with their eyes

wide open in the face of so many choices. People who visit the city are rarely bored, since the city is constantly in motion, promoting events and events that bring together thousands of people, such as Virada Cultural, S찾o Paulo Fashion Week, the Book Biennial, the International Film Festival, and, of course, the LGBT Pride Parade (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). To get to know the city, it is necessary to explore every corner, starting with the most varied bars of Vila Madalena, recognized as one of the funkiest districts in the world. Here people of varied styles gather, not only inside the bars and restaurants, but also along the streets. There are several options that please even the most exotic of tastes, there are usually

live shows playing samba, Brazilian music, forr처, rock and other musical styles. If you arrive early, go to Beco do Batman (Batman Alley) and take photos of colourful scenes made by talented graffiti artists. On Sunday, take a stroll along Paulista Avenue to test your senses and to delight your eyes with great artistic expression. The street is closed during the day, inviting people for a run or bicycle ride. Bands perform on temporary stages, children blow soap bubbles and artists show their works from paintings to jewellery. To enjoy the nightlife, go to Augusta Street. It is a more underground style than Vila Madalena and the street is filled with youthful styles and collaborative shops.

BEYOND THE CAPITAL: Guarujá - Those who believe that the best beaches in Brazil are in the Northeast or Rio de Janeiro definitely do not know about the beaches of São Paulo. Located on the island of Santo Amaro, about 84km from the capital, Guarujá is one of the most sought-after destinations for young people looking for excitement during the summer and for families wishing to enjoy beachfront holidays. The most popular point is the Ensaiada Beach. At 5,600m long, it is the longest beach in Guarujá, with calm and transparent waters. Its facilitates include kiosks and restaurants. If you are looking for a more reserved corner with fewer tourists, a good tip is to enjoy the beautiful days at Tombo Beach. It’s 900m in length and gets its name due to its geological formation. Its sand is irregular and forms small holes causing “tumbles” if you’re not concentrating. The beach hosts the national surf championships and is one of the favourite places for professionals to train. Brotas - Climbing, abseiling, zip lining, tree climbing, rafting, hiking trails, and lots of adventure are what Brotas offers its visitors. About 240km separate this den of radical sports and nature from the bustling capital of São Paulo. The city is known for being one of the main tourist destinations geared towards ecotourism and adventure tourism in the country. Despite being a typical countryside city of São Paulo State, it has a wide infrastructure of lodging, food and sightseeing.

The destination attracts many visitors during the winter looking for cooler weather. The city has a strong gastronomic appeal. Fondue, wine, cheese and chocolates are some of the most consumed delicacies in the coldest season of the year. Not to mention the craft beers, such as the traditional Baden-Baden, which is produced locally. A romantic destination by nature, Campos do Jordão also attracts many couples that nestle by the fireplace to warm up their relationship. Morro da Caixa D’Água, in the city of Guarujá

Rich in history, architecture, gastronomy and tourist attractions. Here we are talking about the state of Minas Gerais, which lures tourist’s attention through the beauty of its parks, squares and ecological sanctuaries and to its importance in the development and progress of Brazil since the 16th century. Minas Gerais was the centrepiece for the country’s economic development both during the Gold rush and later with its the vast coffee plantations. In the capital, Belo Horizonte, the options for nature, cultural and historical heritage are endless. The city promotes great walks through cultural venues; there are museums, cinemas, parks, a theatre, mountain ranges and belvederes spread across the city that can be enjoyed during the day, while at night the world capital of bars is always swarming with people. Belo Horizonte presents several attractions in its urban landscape, with an emphasis on the Architectural Complex of Pampulha and Liberdade Square. In Pampulha, one of the main attractions is the church of San Francisco de Assis, a postcard of the city and one of the best-known works by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. Beautiful and special, it was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a World Cultural Heritage site. 46 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | WTM l London l November 2017

Another tip is to walk around the Pampulha Ecological Park. With around 300,000m2 of green area, it is home to an artificial lake and a museum in homage to the 100 years of Japanese immigration in Brazil. The Liberdade Tour, opened in 2010, it is also another major tourist attraction in Belo Horizonte, so much so that it is already recognized as an important cultural corridor of the country. Sheltered in a historic area of the capital, the site is composed of 14 institutions, among museums, centres of culture and education, which map different aspects of the artistic universe. Among the cultural institutions that are in operation on the Circuit, seven are managed directly by the State Government and the others are operated through public-private partnerships or partnerships with federal public institutions. The beauty and architecture of the buildings that make up the Liberdade tour are inviting to visitors, such as the Luiz de Bessa State Public Library, the Liberdade Palace, the Public Archives, the Mineiro Museum, the CEMIG Popular Art Centre, the CEFART Liberdade, BDMG Cultural, Minas Gerais Vale Memorial, Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre (CCBB), Horizonte SEBRAE - Casa da Economia Criativa, Casa Fiat de Cultura, the Minas Gerais Academy of Letters

and the House of Cultural Patrimony of Minas Gerais. OURO PRETO It is wrong to think that Minas Gerais only has Belo Horizonte as a tourist attraction. You need to spread your wings and visit Ouro Preto. which was established as a Heritage of National Memory from 1933 and registered by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) in 1938. And lastly, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) turned Ouro Preto into a Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 1980. The city now houses the largest architectural group of Brazilian baroque art, preserving relics such as the church of São Francisco de Assis, the most famous in Ouro Preto, and one of the most magnificent examples of local baroque art. Its construction began in 1766 and is considered as Aleijadinho’s masterpiece. In addition, the destination is also home to the church of Our Lady of Pilar and is decorated with over 400kg of gold and 400kg of silver. In the middle of the cobbled streets that cut through the old town, formally known as Vila Rica (Rich Villa), are fountains, chapels, museums and a beautiful colonial house that is a keeper of stories from the state’s golden age of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Southeast Another attraction of great cultural and tourist visibility of the region is the Gold Tour, which covers 17 cities - among them Ouro Preto - located with a maximum radius of 150km from the state capital, Belo Horizonte. Throughout the tour, you will find sculptures by Aleijadinho, paintings by Mestre Athayde, baroque artwork, museums, archaeological sites with cave paintings and also history and culture represented in the expressions of its people. Its historical importance is indisputable.

TIRADENTES One of the best-preserved historical cities in Brazil, this is how we can classify Tiradentes, nestled in the countryside of Minas Gerais. It was during the gold rush that the colonial streets of the cities were at their most crowded, but today, it is much quieter. The 18th century churches share attention with the preserved buildings that are home to restaurants, guesthouses, antique shops and craft shops that use their lamps to light their façades at dusk. This enchanting place, which has already been used in a movie, a TV series and a soap opera, also has an imposing backdrop: the Serra de São José, with mountains typical of Minas Gerais. Tiradentes has changed from being merely a historical destination to a cultural hub. For almost ten years, the city has hosted big events, such as the Cinema Show (January), the Bikefest (June) and the Festival of Culture and Gastronomy (August). However, throughout the year a number of other attractions are take place. Some of these attractions are the handicraft shops, the Royal Road Automobile Museum, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos and the Museum of Liturgy. It is still possible to explore the nature that surrounds the city, such as the trails in the Serra de São José and the jeep tours.

With 460km of coastline, Espírito Santo is not far behind the North and Northeast coasts of the Country. With blue-green beaches and strips of soft white sand that invite swimmers to stretch out on the seashore and observe the movement of the waves, the Capixaba state - as it is nicknamed - has a high level of infrastructure able to cater for tourists in comfort. The beaches have kiosks and restaurants prepared to look after visitors. The highlight is the moqueca, a fish stew made with local spices that accompanies rice and

The main beach region of Espírito Santo, Guarapari is the best place to stay if your goal is to get a tan in the sun and cleanse the energies by diving in the sea. Its 46 beaches are great not only for swimming but also for water sports such as surfing, sailing, jet-skiing and rowing. Formed by dozens of islands, coves and rocky shores, the site still creates the perfect environment for diving. Considered as one of the ten most

beautiful beaches in Brazil, the beach of Meaípe borders an old fishing village. From weak waves and thick sands, the region attracts many people who wish to move away from civilization and enjoy the tranquillity to relax the mind. If you are traveling with children, a good tip is to visit the Namorados and Castanheiras beaches. The two are divided by huge rocks, interspersed by reefs and, during low tide, natural pools appear full of small fish, which gives much happiness to little ones.

Southeast CONCEIÇÃO DA BARRA Located in the north of the state, the city houses the State Park of Itaúnas. The destination is known for the National Festival of Forró, which attracts music fans in the month of July. The best way to explore the site is by buggy, jeeps, canoe and horse through the dunes, beaches and mangroves that bypass the reserve. Motorized tours last the whole day and take you to Riacho Doce and the Gold Coast. The boats, however, sail the Itaúnas River and continue along the Argelim River. Riacho Doce is the usual destination for horseback riding and lasts about three hours. Horseback riding and canoeing also take place on full moon nights. For surfers, the tip is to go to Gua-

xindiba beach, which is surrounded by fine, soft and yellow sands. On the other hand, fishermen hit Pontal do Sul - the deserted beach dotted with dunes is full of whiting and is accessible by boat. VITÓRIA The state capital, Vitória, and the neighbouring town, Vila Velha, located at a distance of only 12km to the south, tell a little about the history of the colonization of Espírito Santo. Buildings, churches, convents and monasteries mark the years of foundation of the city. The main attraction of the city, the Convent of Our Lady of Penha is the tourist symbol of the state. Founded in 1558, at the top of a 154m high

hill, the view below is one of the most beautiful in the city, where you can see Vitória, Vila Velha, Morro do Moreno and Costa Beach. Located just 5km from Vitória, Costa Beach is the most popular with tourists during the summer. Surfers head to the end of the Itaparica beach, as it is known for its strong waves. At night the Triângulo, in Canto Beach, is the best place for those wishing to relax and have a beer. The region concentrates several bars and restaurants inviting tourists and locals to a fun evening. The great differential of Vitória is in the prices. Much cheaper than the other state capitals, tourists can enjoy the nightlife much more and spend less.

When the architect, Oscar Niemeyer and the urban planner, Lúcio Costa designed what would be the new capital of Brazil, they could not have imagined that the present Brasília would become a Cultural Patrimony of Humanity classified by UNESCO, rich in detail and history. The city was idealized by Juscelino Kubitschek between the years of 1957 and 1960, in order to decentralize the country and unite the regions farthest from the Rio de Janeiro–São Paulo axis that dominated the southeast. Brasília is

today the materialization of a historical aspiration of the Brazilian nation, with the main characteristic being monumentality, determined by its four scales: monumental, residential, bucolic and gregarious and for its innovative architecture. Currently, with more than 2.9 million inhabitants, Brasília is one of the largest metropolises in Brazil. The city is currently the third most populous city in the country, housing all the political spheres that have power to guide democracy through the four

corners of this continental country. In addition to hosting the Federal Government, it is a large service-providing centre, with urban architecture and landscapes of great beauty and uniqueness. Its architecture boasts palaces, public buildings, bridges, gardens, panels and sculptures that bring together the best of civic tourism and the historical patrimony of a city built in four years in the middle of nowhere. Midwest Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral, Theatre, National Museum and Library, JK Memorial and Alvorada Palace are some of the buildings that have entered Brazil’s history in the 20th century and are worth a visit. The Esplanade of the Ministries is still considered a separate chapter. The strategic position of the city made it become one of the main hubs in Brazil. So much so that in recent years, Brasília has more international flights linking the Federal Capital to Europe, South America and USA, for example, although the economic crisis has somewhat disrupted this growth. The most important monuments of Brasília were erected in the Monumental Axis, emphasizing the Three Powers Square, as already mentioned above. However, it is impossible not to include it in the circuit the Temple of Good Will, the Imported Fair, the Office of the Public Prosecutor, the Superior Court of Justice and the JK Bridge, awarded as one of the most beautiful in the world, a brand new tourist attraction in the city. On warm sunny days all the attention turns to Paranoá Lake. Created artificially to serve as a leisure option for locals, this is the best option for cooling off and exercising. Do not forget to visit the TV Tower, which is always a spectacle and the terrace has a panoramic view of the city. Reserve some of your time for the other attractions that you should visit in the capital, such as the Cláudio Santoro National Theatre, the Cultural Centre of the Republic and the Memorial of Indigenous People, all also designed by Oscar Niemeyer. Another rising potential that grows every day in the federal capital is MICE Tourism. Brasilia is considered as one of the main business and events destinations in the country. Juscelino Kubitschek Airport has the third largest passenger movement in Brazil and is one of the main airports in Latin America. The city also offers a diversified structure for holding events such as convention centers, a fair and exhibition hall and cultural venues. This is the case of the renowned Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center, which has capacity to receive up to

9,400 people; Expo Brasilia, has capacity for 1,300 people; and the Convention Center Brazil, is able to receive up to 3,000 people. To host events, there must be good hotel chains. The 2014 FIFA World Cup helped and today the federal capital has 38 hotels that boast 6,575 units associated to the

ABIH-DF. If you want to visit this architectural paradise, several international carriers offer direct flights to the federal capital. Currently, Brasilia International Airport receives flights by American Airlines, from Miami, Copa Airlines, from Panama, and TAP Portugal, from Lisbon. Bruno Pinheiro

re caves that hide small ponds with different colour tones, according to the reflections of the rays of sun that vary throughout the day. If you prefer observing the local fauna, then you will come across anteaters, monkeys, capybaras and other wild animals that are in their own natural habitat. There are around 660 types of birds, with flocks of macaws and toucans, in a colourful setting where nature shows all of its exuberance. There is more to enjoy. From inflata-

There are those who prefer the fun of Adventure Tourism and here it is possible to hang from rocks, abseil down into an abyss, enjoy buoy-cross and a tree-top walk that finishes in a refreshing waterfall. The city has tourist category hotels, restaurants and varied commerce where craft shops share the area with local tourism agencies. Each visitation site has a limit on the number of daily visitors, in addition to having pre-established schedules by the owners of farms where most of Bonito’s attractions are located. Among the preferred trips for you to visit the natural aquariums of Bonito, the most usual is the ‘floating’, where fish are visible at the bottom of rivers and bays. These tours are offered by travel agents in the region’s resorts and along the rivers.

Bonito The city was the 2013 winner of the World Responsible Tourism Awards. The award is recognized and appreciated worldwide. With the nickname “Brazilian capital of ecotourism”, Bonito has 33 attractions that are part of the official tour of the city and do not require any prior experience. Floating on the rivers is among the most sought after attraction. The two main options are the Sucuri River and the Prata River. It is possible to dive here and go animal watching amongst the rich flora and fauna or why not try them both as they have their own characteristics. The Sucuri is considered the most crystalline river in Brazil, as the visibility reaches 15 meters. But the Prata River is the best place for fish spotting due to the sheer quantity - from traditional pacu and piraputangas to spotted sorubim and jaw characin, and a multitude of MTur

small minnows. If you like contemplating nature, then, in addition to the floating on the river, a good idea is to take a trip to the Hole of Araras. This is a huge 100m deep and 500m wide hole. It is the habitat of hundreds of scarlet macaws and other birds native to the region. The flock of macaws is really a very beautiful sight, especially between the months of June and September, when it is easier to watch them. The caves are the symbols of the city, therefore, a must visit. The Blue Lake Cave has a breath taking view. After a descent of 290 steps and 60 metres, it is possible to see a beautiful lake of crystal clear water, which appears blue, but actually the colour is the effect of the sun’s rays that penetrate the opening of the cave. The geological formations are also attractions as they are millions of years old.

Waterfalls are also attractions in Bonito

View of the city of Manaus from the middle of the Amazon River

A cultural, natural, enriching and refreshing state. This is what any tourist can experience in one of the most exotic and complete destinations in Brazil and the world. We are talking about the state of Amazonas, with the city of Manaus as its capital, right in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Before we even dive into the more exotic tours and discover what special things the Amazon forest has to offer us, we must begin with the state capital Manaus, the protector of historical buildings and population of welcoming and extremely hospitable people. Founded in 1669, under the command of Captain Francisco da Mota

Falcão, Manaus means “Mother of the Gods”. Located at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões Rivers, the capital is known for its tourist potential and rich historical and cultural heritage. It has become so important in the last decades that it even hosted some of the 2014 World Cup games. The city has an enriching and essential roadmap for getting to know the preservation and history of Manaus. So, come with us and discover the main sights of the capital. To start with, the Amazonas Theatre, which was built with imported material - iron from England, bronze from Belgium and Murano crystals from Italy – and took JP Lima

15 years to complete. The theatre was inaugurated on December 31, 1896 and has a capacity of 701 seated and in boxes. Every year, the theatre hosts the famous Opera Festival, which takes place in the months of May and June, but there is a year-round calendar of other spectacles. In July, the venue hosts the Amazonas Jazz Festival, followed in August by the Amazonas Dance Festival. In September it is the turn of the Amazonas Music Festival and in November the Amazonas Film Festival. All are open to the public and are free of charge. Do not miss the Cultural Centre Largo São Sebastião, which was revitalized in 2004 and became a place for entertainment and leisure, where you can participate in activities such as dance, theatre, art and even a horse and carriage ride. There are bars and restaurants that serve regional dishes, such as the peacock bass stew. There is also the classic Indian Museum, one of the largest in Brazil that explains all about indigenous history. The site displays various pieces produced by tribes from the Amazon, ranging from household items to musical instruments, as well as information on religious missions,

North customs and culture of various Brazilian tribes. Even though it is a historic capital, Manaus still houses important parks and ecological reserves, such as the Sumaúma State Park and the Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden - the largest botanical garden in the world. We could not fail to mention the most anticipated, by the locals, cultural party: Parintins, which is considered as the largest popular celebration in the Amazon and takes place in June. One of the main cultural attractions of Amazonas is the Boi-Bumbá de Parintins. The party has already gained international prestige and attracts thousands of visitors every year and you, who are reading this text now, could be one of them. Immerse yourself in the party where all the characters involved have rich costumes, predominantly from recycled material from nature, such as fibbers, straw and sparkles. The festival is an open-air performance, where two associations compete, the red Garantido Ox - known as “Ox of the masses” -, and the blue Caprichoso Ox, - considered as the “Ox of the elite”. The performance occurs in the Bumbódromo (Amazonino Mendes Cultural and Sports Centre), a stadium in the shape of a stylized bull’s head, with capacity for 35,000. During the three nights of performances, the two oxen explore regional themes such as legends, indigenous rituals and customs of the riverside through symbols and settings. Starting in Manaus, several trails guide tourists to observation points where it is possible to see the local habitat of birds, monkeys, alligators and other animals typical of the Amazon. In addition, tourists can take boat trips through the Amazonian rivers. The highlight is the famous meeting of the waters between the Solimões and Negro rivers, which flow side by side for 12km until they mix together and form the Amazon River. The boat rides also go through indigenous communities and parks full of victoria amazonica. It is still possible to observe porpoises (pink dolphins) and various aquatic species. On these tours, experienced guides take the tourist to more distant points, where it is possible to experience the traditions, customs and day to day activities of indigenous tribes.

For those who are interested in porpoises, the Recanto dos Botos is also an excellent tour where you can feed and swim with them. Another amazing ecotourism tour in the Amazon is alligator spotting. These boat rides take place at night and provide an exciting experience with nature. Simple walks through the forest, canoe trips and visits to local tribes are also some of the attractions offered in the Amazon.

In spite of all its peculiarities, the state of Pará pairs extremely well with the state of Amazonas when it comes to Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism. Both are located in the northern region of the country and share the same fauna, the same flora and the same tourist opportunities in the Amazon Rainforest. Pará, has more than 8 million inhabitants and is home to 50% of the natural attractions offered by the Amazon, this along with its cultural diversity causes envy amongst the other Brazilian states. Combined with the charming capital Belém and all its culture and religion, a trip to Pará has fun and guarantees the opportunity to discover. To begin with, indigenous and regional influence is present in the Ver-o-Peso Market, with its tents selling many products ranging from medicinal roots to tropical fruit, fish and handicrafts. The açaí fruit originates from Pará, and the tambaqui fish are the main promoters of gastronomy in the state. The Estação das Docas (The Docks) is another well-known tourist attraction in the region. It is also an important departure point for boats on Amazonian tours, as it is situated on the banks of the river that bathes the city. It has also been kno-

wn as a tourist complex since 2000. The vivaciousness starts well before nightfall. The “happy hour” here is a tradition that is taken seriously. Getting a seat requires patience, especially in restaurants that offer craft beers. It is possible to find shops of varied types, from typical products to souvenirs. Religious Tourism is also one of the important pillars of the city of Belém. Built in 1852, the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth is the only one in the Brazilian Amazon. Its history, its symbolism and its religious importance exert a profound influence

on Pará, attracting thousands of pilgrims every year. Featuring a neo-classical style, the church is one of the most beautiful in Belém and hosts one of the most special Catholic processions in Brazil: the Círio de Nazaré, which occurs every second Sunday in October and attracts thousands of people. Any Catholic visiting Belém will stop at the Basilica. Nowadays, the church is one of the main historical heritage sites of the city. Close by is also the Emilio Goeldi Museum. on show. On the cultural side, the local folklore heritage is conveyed resoundingly and visually through colourful costumes, loud musical beats and dance. The music echoes through the four corners of the state. From north to south the rhythms create new moves according to the history of each region. However, it is difficult to go to Pará and not want to learn about its exuberant nature. There are three hubs offering natural and cultural attractions: Polo Tapajós, in the west of the state; Marajó, the biggest fluvial island in the world; and the Polo Atlantic Coast, which includes the capital, Belém, and nine other cities on the Atlantic coast. Polo Tapajós has the beautiful city of Santarém as its entrance gate, offering diversified attractions to its tourists. The cities that form the region are located at the junction of the Amazonas and Tapajós rivers, constituting a network of channels, flood areas and lakes, suitable for sport fishing and wildlife observation. During the summer, from August to December, the green waters of the Tapajós river retreat, leaving fine sandy beaches, among which are those at Alter do Chão Village, 38km away from Santarém. It is a spectacle to see a fishing village on the banks of Tapajós surrounded by the forest and the magic of its ancient inhabitants. Another place that is a must see is Monte Alegre, home to archaeological sites with cave paintings. Grotto Pedra Pintada is a prime example of excavations that found the oldest remains of the Amazon and America occupation, which took place around 11,000 years ago. The landing of the herons at sunset is also a sight to behold. The Polo Atlantic Coast, composed of twelve cities, is the state’s gateway to the mangroves and oceanic beaches of its coast. In São João de Pirabas, for example, sport fishing on the high seas and bird watching around its mangroves are activities that attract many tourists. Other nearby towns such as Tracateua, Maracanã, Marapanim and Curuçá also have extensive mangroves and forests that attract large numbers of birds.

But besides the sun and sand product, the state of Santa Catarina is synonymous with environmental preservation and has nature tourism tours for followers of this segment. ROSA’S BEACH The coast of Santa Catarina provides a spectacle aside for nature lovers. From June to November, a spectacular phenomenon occurs along the south coast, where hundreds of right whales leave the frozen waters of Patagonia and come to give birth and feed their babies around Rosa’s Beach. The region has been transformed into a large area of environmental protection for these mammals, which measure up to 17m in length and weigh five tons. The best spot to see the animals is in Rosa’s Bay. With waters protected from the ocean currents, the destination helps whales and spectators who can spot the giant mammals from trails and lodges overlooking the beach. If you are a surfer then you have many opportunities to see them. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Santa Catarina as a family or in a group. The complex is located in the city of Penha, neighbouring Itajaí. Last year, the park received more than 2 million visitors, of which 700,000 visited during the holiday season in July. These attrac-

tions have charmed parents and children for 25 years now and the attractions include zoos, circuses, themed shows and rides with advanced technology. The park is divided into seven areas: the Avenue of Nations, Animal World, German Village, the Wild West, Pirate Island, Radical Adventure and Fantasy Land. Each area is heavily themed and coupled with the attractions immerse visitors into a world that seems have come from your imagination. If white-knuckle rides are your thing, then you cannot fail to try the Big Tower (the largest free-fall tower in Brazil), or the lifts in the Tower of Terror and the FireWhip (the first inverted roller coaster in Brazil and the largest in Latin America). For adults, the park offers a large number of shops and even an outlet. Shows of West End standard will delight not only your little ones but the whole family.

especially for shopping. Here you will find world famous brands at very affordable prices. In Argentina, it is possible to shop for leather, wool, cosmetics, crystals, as well as spices. CURITIBA Curitiba has beauty that goes beyond the natural aspect. The capital of Paraná is modern, sophisticated and cosmopolitan, all that a great city can offer its inhabitants and visitors. Curitiba also has a diversified historical, cultural and gastronomic circuit. Paraná is a mosaic and it is in its capital that this is reflected with more emphasis. Tradition and modernity here go very much together. In various monuments and tourist sites, the destination honours the various ethnic groups that have settled here. The gastronomy and the architecture have Europeans to thank for their influence; but the Portuguese, Italians, Germans, Polish, Ukrainians and others have also helped mould the area. After visiting the capital, it is time to embark on a sensational train journey to the city of Morretes. The Curitiba-Serra do Mar-Morretes-Paranaguá railroad represents an extraordinary 19th century engineering feat, where its construction was considered impractical by many European engineers of the time. It stretches 110km on one of the most famous and beautiful railroad journeys in Brazil within the ecological reserve of Serra do Mar. The railway line’s history is more than 125 years old. From the train, you can the largest preserved area of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, an ecological treasure that is located between the first plateau of Paraná and the coastal plain. The route

The Marumbi State Park is one such place and offers trails, rivers and mountains, as well as the Taquaral River running through the middle. It forms some natural pools of crystal clear water. Another characteristic of Morretes are its waterfalls. The most famous are the Salto da Fortuna and the Santo dos Macacos.
