LagoonS
Feia (Ugly) Lagoon is among the largest freshwater lagoons in Brazil and is on the border of the cities of Campos dos Goytacazes and Quissamã in the northern region of the state. Feia Lagoon is approximately 170 km² and is quite popular for artisanal fishing. In the last hundred years, its surface has reduced to one third of its original size. Contrary to what its name signifies, it is a very beautiful and majestic lake. The origin of the misnomer is due to it being discovered on a stormy day.
Jurubatiba Located in the Jurubatiba National Park, in the midst of northern Rio de Janeiro, is Jurubatiba. Here there are several species of fl ora and fauna, especially orchids and bromeliads. The lagoon has important diversity, as there are remains of the northeastern hinterlands and the Amazon rainforest, also trees typical of the most arid of regions. Alligators, capybaras, armadillos, otters, anteaters, also a considerable number of birds and fish that live in the park next to the lake still remain unstudied.
Araruama Located in the region known as Sun Coast, Araruama Lagoon stands out mainly for the water sports and beauty of its shimmering surface. Depending on the winds, the lake is considered ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing, hobie cats, jet skiing and sailing. There, are many sailing competitions that take place here too.
Guanabara Bay Guanabara Bay is the backdrop to most pictures that represent Brazil abroad. Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and the mountains that frame them are the bestknown Brazilian images worldwide with hundreds of islands, cliffs, islands, coves and ridges form its landscape. Among the main ones are: Paquetá, Ilha do Governador, Niterói and Magé. Some islands are part of the city’s history, such as the Fiscal Island, that became famous for having housed the famous Baile da Ilha Fiscal, the last big party of the Empire before the proclamation of the Republic in November 1889. Others, such as Cobras Island, were strategic points of defence against foreign pirate invaders who arrived in Brazil in search of riches.
coastline and mountains is impressive with numerous beaches, such as Barra de Guaratiba, Restinga da Marambaia, Capela, Aterro (which is also known as Brisa), Cardo, Recôncavo and Sepetiba. The Bay is home to several islands, such as Bom Jardim, Jaguanum , Guaíba and the most famous, Itacuruçá. The estuarine dolphin, a species of dolphin, can be seen throughout the year in the region of Itacuruçá Beach and Cardoso Island.
Angra dos Reis The largest island in the Angra dos Reis Bay is a paradise for adventurers and those who just want to enjoy beautiful beaches. Ilha Grande (Big Island) has many beauties and stories to enrich everyone´s trip. One third of its territory was transformed into a State Park in 1971 to preserve the Atlantic Forest. Its 192km² are home to 106 beaches, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, mountains and peaks. On the side facing the open ocean are deserted beaches within a paradisiacal setting. On this side is the Biological Reserve of South Beach, with fully preserved Atlantic Forest.

he State of Rio de Janeiro is toasted by a unique set of factors, which combines everything a tourist could want in a destination. The exuberant nature appears in two distinct regions: the highlands and the lowlands. Moving away from the coast on parallel tracks, they extend into the countryside and have created two very different delightful destinations. Add to this a the unique culture, the big events such as the Carnival and New Year’s Eve Party, and the local people who are renowned for their friendliness and charisma, and are always ready to welcome you. The capital amalgamates characteristics from many places as people from all over the country and the world have chosen to live privileged setting, which now has 16 million inhabitants. If a person was born in the City of Rio de Janeiro they are known as ‘cariocas’, and if the person was born in the State of Rio de Janeiro, then they are known as “fl uminense”. As a gateway to Brazil, Rio is blessed by the statue of Christ the Redeemer, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, which, from the top of Corcovado Mountain, opens his arms over the beautiful Guanabara Bay. This magnificent sight continues to inspire singers, poets and painters.
ParKs Itatiaia National Park Located in the Itatiaia Massif at Serra da Mantiqueira, between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, the Itatiaia National Park is the oldest in Brazil and was created on June 4, 1937. With a tupi origin, its name means “Spiked cliff or pointed stone”. Inside the park is one of the highest peaks in the country, standing 2800 metres high. Hiking, climbing and even scuba diving are some of the activities available for the adventurous. The site has eight waterfalls and 15 trails that are visited by more than 80,000 people a year. In the lower part of the park, the Blue Lake is a good choice for diving, but it takes a little courage, because the average water temperature is only 12 degrees.
Serra da Bocaina National Park Between the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the Serra da Bocaina National Park comprises of an approximate area of 134,000 hectares and is of significant biodiversity. It is estimated that 60% of the vegetation is from the Atlantic Forest, and the remainder is regenerated forest. Among the species of fl ora you can find many
kinds of trees and plants, but the most common and easy to spot are pines, cedars, trumpet trees, palm trees and bromeliads. Bird watchers in the park will have a field day as the wild animals aren´t shy. A good tip is to venture onto the Gold Trail, a 3-day walk that passes through historic places, linking São José do Barreiro to Paraty.
Tijuca National Park A fragment of the Atlantic Forest biome and an integral part of the Biosphere Reserve in Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca National Park is currently the most visited national park in Brazil, receiving over two million visitors per year. Divided into four sectors (Tijuca Forest, Serra da Carioca, Pedra Bonita/Pedra da Gávea and Pretos Forros/ Covanca), the Park represents about 3.5% of the area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It stands out in the landscape as it´s a great “green” mass in the centre of the metropolis that has about six million inhabitants. Currently, the Tijuca Park is an important recreational area, providing sports sites and the opportunity to contemplate over the nature. There are some of the city’s major landmarks, such as the Christ the Redeemer Statue, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Vista Chinesa (Chinese Belvedere), Mayrink Chapel, Mesa do Imperador (Emperor’s Table) and Lage Park here, which have helped turn the park into an international tourist attraction.

From the top of Corcovado Mountain, there are privileged views of this lagoon surrounded by urban buildings. It is possible to enjoy a walk or a cycle ride around the lagoon, which stretches for 7 kms. It is a great place to enjoy the sunny mornings where you will find relaxed leisure activities.

Serra dos Órgãos National Park Covering the cities of Guapimirim, Magé, Teresópolis and Petrópolis, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park covers an area of over 20,000 hectares. Its curious name – Organ Mountains – derives from the similarity of the mountain peaks to organ pipes in churches. The park is a popular place for Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism and from May to September, the mountaineering season is open. There are common sports like climbing, hiking, rappelling and others. The most famous trail is the crossing between Petrópolis and Teresópolis, a route that takes three days and is considered the most beautiful walk in the country. In total there is 30 km of hard walking through the mountains passing by such highlights, as the Açu Castle and Pedra do Sino (Bell Stone).
Serra da Tiririca State Park Anyone who has been to Niterói, Itaipuaçu and Itacoatiara, surely must have seen the famous Elephant Rock, which takes its name precisely because its head and body look like a huge elephant, and it is the highest point in Niterói. Perhaps you have heard about climbing Costão de Itacoatiara to see the sun as it slowly descends upon the waters of the sea? Both are tourist attractions in the Serra do Tiririca State Park. A natural boundary between the cities of Niterói and Maricá, Serra da Tiririca starts between the beaches of Itacoatiara and Itaipuaçu and extends to the highway Amaral Peixoto (BR -106) on the border of São Gonçalo. The total area is of 2,400 hectares, including the coastline. Besides various trails of varying difficulty through the undergrowth, the park also has a viewing platform, ideal for people of all ages.

Pedra Branca State Park Situated in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the Pedra Branca (White Stone) State Park is one of the largest urban forests in the world, at 12,500 hectares. Its highest point of 1025 metres is Pedra Branca Peak, which is located between the neighbourhoods of Jacarepaguá and Vargem Grande, and can be seen from anywhere in the neighbouring areas. The name of the peak was given because it is composed of limestone and is white in colour. Concealed by typical Atlantic Forest vegetation (cedar, jacaranda, jequitiba (cariniana) and ipê (tabebuia)), it is a shelter for the fauna that is home to ocelots, three-toed sloths, anteaters, lowland pacas, armadillos, lizards, Brazilian porcupines, toucans, guans and agoutis.
Brava Beach, Búzios, Sun Coast. Below, Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro
Ipanema Beach Known worldwide thanks to the song The Girl from Ipanema, by Vinícius de Moraes, Ipanema Beach is one of the most famous in Rio de Janeiro. From its wide strip of sand it is possible to see the Arpoador Rock, Leblon Beach, the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) Mountain, Corcovado and Cagarras Islands. The most popular points along Ipanema Beach are: Posto 9, where, every day, there is a traditional applause as the sunsets below the ocean; Posto 10, a meeting place for young people in the South Zone of Rio; Coqueirão, located in front of the largest area of coconut trees, which attracts a predominantly young audience; and the strip of sand in front of Farme de Amoedo Street, which is known for being the gay point along the seashore.
Arpoador Beach The sunset seen from Arpoador Rock is the major attraction on the Beach here, with a view, not only of the immensity of the sea but as well, to the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) Mountains. With a 500-metre stretch of sand and big waves, the beach is popular with surfers, one of the most sought after locations in Rio de Janeiro for the sport. On a walk along the beach, you can enjoy gym equipment, sand courts and the Girl from Ipanema Park, which has sports court, a skating rink and a bike path that goes towards Copacabana Fort.
Lopes Mendes Beach, Ilha Grande, Green Coast. Below, Prainha Beach, Rio de Janeiro
Brava Beach Surrounded by low vegetation and rocky cliffs, Brava Beach is used mostly by fishermen; and surfers who are in search of big waves. Because of its rough sea, the beach doesn´t attract many swimmers but it’s an ideal place for those seeking a location of calmness and beautiful scenery. By not having large numbers, the beach is favourable for sports, such as racquetball and football. It has rustic beach bars along its 660 metre stretch, where fish and drinks are served.
Lopes Mendes Beach With approximately three kilometres of white sand, Lopes Mendes is the most famous beach on Ilha Grande and it is recognised as one of the most beautiful in the world. It always has strong currents and transparent waters, which are an attraction for surfers and swimmers. A deserted place, with no bars, restaurants or hotels, Lopes Mendes is only accessible by boat or along trails, starting from the main town, Vila do Abraão. The beach has plenty of sun, shade and breezes, thus attracting many tourists. The nearest accommodation is on the beaches of Pouso, Mangues and Grande das Palmas.
BeAchEs Itacoatiara Beach
A 30-minute drive from Rio de Janeiro is Itacoatiara Beach, which is located in Niterói and is a popular meeting point for surfers. It stretches for 700 metres and is one of the most frequented places of young people in the region, as there is beautiful scenery all around you. If big waves are not your thing, then another beach is Prainha, which has calmer and clearer waters, and salt marsh vegetation along the beach. Frequented mostly by locals, the beach attracts visitors looking for a more peaceful place because it is not as crowded as the famous beaches in Rio de Janeiro.
Martim de Sá Beach A deserted white sandy beach, with big waves and surrounded by mountains, Martim de Sá Beach, located in Paraty, is the ideal place if you are in search of a tranquil setting. The main attraction of the beach, besides surfing, is the campsite and it is also the starting point for long treks through the woods and surrounding area. Additionally, you can bath in the waterfall, fish and dive. As an area of environmental protection, Martim de Sá encourages the preservation of the environment with competitions for visitors to collect rubbish that has been left scattered on the ground.

K
nown for the diversity of its attractions, which are divided between the mountains and the coast, the State of Rio de Janeiro also preserves a rich cultural heritage (especially Carnival, the most popular party in the country), which stretches from the capital to the interior. The folkloric processions, popular artists, institutions and traditions of the 92 cities in the state have recently been mapped showing that Rio de Janeiro has a lot to offer when it comes to culture. >> The capital of Rio de Janeiro is known for its Samba, a beat that is a characteristic of Brazil during Carnival and that will engross those who hear it; and for Bossa Nova, which gained worldwide notoriety after becoming more popular at party’s of Rio’s middle class in their homes in the South Zone, where people would gather and listen to the music. More recently funk music is the most popular. Recognized as a cultural movement by a state law from 2008, funk is no longer just music from the periphery. It has gained notoriety within the middle classes and among foreign tourists. Regardless of the rhythm, it is impossible to stand still when the music starts playing.
Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, Angra do Reis, Green Coast
Festa do Divino, takes place every year in May at a party inherited from the Portugueses. It´s about the coronation of a new “Emperor”, who parades with his disciples. In the same city, in July, the FLIP festival takes place. It is the largest literary event in the country with workshops, lectures and exhibitions by leading publishers. In January, in the nearby town of Angra dos Reis, Folia de Reis, is another cultural event that takes folkloric groups to the streets. >> On the Green Coast, in cities like Araruama and São Pedro D´Aldeia, during Corpus Christi, people make a long carpet from salt and sawdust and with these items they draw sacred images along the main streets of the city. >> Caxambu, dance and musical genre with African origin, remains alive in Miracema, North of the state, thanks to the Senzala Caxambu Association of Miracema. The caxambu is traditionally presented on the evening of May 13, at June parties and on holy days. The group sings melodies sung by former slaves, dancing in a circle that moves in a lunar direction, accompanied by drums.
CulTure >> Quissamã, north of the state, still maintains the traditions of the sugar-cane zone farmers, which allowed slaves to sing and dance, with drums, in the slave quarters. But what they did not know was that this festive and joyous event criticized and ridiculed the farm owners. Known as Jongo or Tambor, the tradition is officially celebrated on the night of May 13th. Its origin dates back to the arrival of slaves brought on behalf of the sugar economy of the State of Rio de Janeiro. >> In Paraty , in the Green Coast Region, the traditional
>> In the Conservatória district of Valença, the highlight is the street serenades. Each year the Festival of Serenades occurs, which brings together the top serenaders in the country and at weekends there are always performances. The Coffee Valley holds an annual festival with shows by classical and contemporary musicians and dance and theatre performances.

Editorial Ecotourism and football, a perfect mix for German tourists In 2013, for the first time in the country’s history, Brazil surpassed six million international visitors. It is estimated that by the end of 2014 this number will exceed seven million. According to the World Tourism Organization (WTO), whilst global tourism grew by 5% in 2013, Brazilian destinations recorded an increase of 6%. This is positive news.
Pantanal (MS) Philipe Phiton
Also, according to WTO data, the increase in the number of foreign tourists in Brazil was almost triple compared to the average of 2% in the other South American countries. In this region Brazil and Argentina are the most visited destinations. Brazil´s good 2013 performance was influenced, among other things, by World Youth Day and the Confederations Cup, which proved that Brazil has the ability to host major events. In the coming years the forecast is that Brazil will continue to be a desired option for leisure and business tourism for international visitors. The truth is that the country has entered a crucial period for tourism and among the 600,000 foreign visitors expected during the FIFA World Cup (June and July 2014) many will be from Germany.
Fernando de Noronha (PE)
The number of Germans visiting Brazil reached 258.437 in 2012. The country moved up one position in the visitors ranking and now occupies 3rd place, and is the highest ranked European country. Most of the tourists search for Nature, Adventure Tourism and Ecotourism, the major segments that attract Germans to Brazil. So, in this edition, we decided to explore this aspect and reveal all the places where contact with the environment is more evident. In the Brazil booth at ITB, you will find the 2014 World Cup mascot, Fuleco, cultural attractions, information on the FIFA competition and also details about the great Brazilian diversity with its regions that offer many green places, sun and blue sky. For nature lovers or football fanatics, there’s no better time to visit Brazil!

Number of foreign tourists in Brazil rose above the world average The increase in the number of foreign tourists in Brazil in 2013 surpassed the worldwide average growth, and was nearly three times higher than the other South American countries. While the total global number of foreign tourists has increased by 5% in the last year, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO), in Brazil this rate was 6%. This is according to preliminary data from Embratur (Brazilian Tourism Institute), with the arrival of at least 6 million foreign tourists. Also according to WTO data, the increase in the number of foreign tourists in Brazil was almost triple the 2 % average recorded by the other South American countries, a region where Brazil and Argentina are the main recipients of foreign tourists. World Youth Day, the Confederations Cup and the greater exposure on the international scene due to major events, like the World Cup, which begins next June, and the Olympics 2016 influenced Brazil’s good performance in 2013. The goal for this year is to take advantage of this increased exposure and reach 7 million foreign tourists. By 2017, this number is expected to reach 10 million.

Brazil
Tourism Ministry announces new tourist map of the country The map of Brazilian tourism has changed. The new setting brings, besides the regions well known, routes that shall be included in the next travel guides and attract a growing number of tourists in the coming years. Compared to the previous map, published in 2009, the new version has a higher number of tourist regions (303). This increase was mainly due to a new division and dismemberment of large areas - such as Serra Gaúcha (mountains in Rio Grande do Sul), now divided into microregions. All the selected cities have undergone a revaluation of its tourist attractions, so the number decreased from 3,635 to 3,345. “Not all cities on the map have the potential to be part of the process of development of tourism in the country. This is a sign of maturity in management work”, said Gastão Vieira, Tourism Minister. The revaluation of destinations and their respective regions is based on the new guidelines of the Tourism Regionalization Program, established by the National Tourism Plan 2013-2016. The new tourist map guides the projects and policies of the Ministry of Tourism investments in the country.
Aviation
: investments in the sector The ‘Investment Program in Logistics: Airports’, is a set of procedures aimed at improving the quality of services and the infrastructure at the airports. Launched by President Dilma Rousseff, it spreads the provision of air transportation to the Brazilian population. A key measure is the selling of various airports to the private sector. To strengthen and expand the route network of regional airports, the Federal Government will also invest R$ 7.3 billion in the first stage of the regional aviation plan. In this first phase 270 regional airports will be covered. The procedures will improve the quality of service for passengers, add new airports to the regular air transportation network and increase the number of flights operated by the airlines.

Brazil is recognised among the most coveted destinations in the world >> Brazil and the city of Rio de Janeiro are among the best destinations in the world, according to a survey done by the social network site Minube, one of the largest online communities of travelers and tourists and is visited regularly by over 30 million people. The social network has launched the Social Destination Awards, which will crown the best destinations and the best photos submitted by users. Brazil is among the top 10 and Rio de Janeiro among the 15 cities that have the most votes so far. The country definitely deserves to be on the list. Brazil is considered first in the world in natural attractions according to a tourism competitiveness ranking done by the World Economic Forum, which assesses 140 countries. The sector of business tourism and events is the second biggest factor in attracting foreign visitors to Brazil: 25.6 %
of international tourists come to the country for this purpose, and their average daily expenditure, of US$ 127, is almost twice as high as the expenditure of leisure tourists. Over the past decade, the Ministry of Tourism has signed more than 16,000 improvement contracts and invested US$ 8 billion to improve tourist infrastructure in all states. Currently, there are 5,659 projects in progress, which mainly include road resurfacing, signposting tourist destinations and the construction of convention centres. Last year, Tourism entered the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), with R$ 680 million invested on infrastructure projects. In the previous year, the Tourism Development Pact was signed by governors from 16 states, which formalized the transfer of R$ 305 million for completion of projects.
C ompanies in the tour ism s ec tor invested more in their companies last year. Entrepreneurs from seven segments intended to invest, on average, 14.6% of total revenue in the last quarter of the year, according to the Bulletin of Economic Performance of Tourism by the Ministry of Tourism. The evolution of the average income of the entire sector in the first three quarters of last year - 2.8 %, 4.8% and 8.6 % compared to 2012 - has raised the optimism of entrepreneurs. Among the seven sectors surveyed, event organizers and lodging facilities will invest the largest percentage of revenue: 29.3% and 28.2% respectively. The hotel industry, which experienced a 44% growth in the market, in October, intended to invest in the acquisition of equipment and improvement of physical infrastructure, which are also priorities for event organizers.
Embratur define strategic projects to promote Brazil during the FIFA World Cup year >> For 2014, as well as four more editions of “Goal to Brazil”, which are dedicated to the World Cup, Embratur will have a more focused action plan. The schedule is based on the potential of each market. The promotion and marketing strategy planned for the end of this year was based on data such as the current arrival of tourists to Brazil, flights and immediate growth potential. Brazil will be present initially in 25 tourism fairs abroad. The goal is for Embratur to continue to promote the country at the most important events, seeking widespread participation, with interactive activities in their a high tech booth, which will have more colours and space and will favour the coexhibitors. The number of participants this year will surpass 2013’s figures. For this year, Embratur is also preparing a new system of registration. Digital communication will be a tool used to promote Brazil abroad, improving relationships with co-exhibitors. After launching the new website for
promoting Brazil, the idea is to focus on specific campaigns and new web pages that will diversify the tourismproduct,BrazilHomeisoneexampleofthis. Another plan is with regards to relationship marketing and business intelligence, to promote Brazil as a tourist destination abroad. Reopened at the end of last year, the 13 EBTs (Brazilian Tourism Offices) started 2014 with the objective of increasing long-term business relationships with operators and potential customers. The executives responsible for the offices have defined the planning of what will be done this year. Besides the major trade fairs, the EBTs will attend events aimed at professionals in the tourism market, allowing new Brazilian tourism products to be on the travel agents shelves.
Results >> The year of 2013 was considered positive since the flow of international tourists grew above the world average. While global tourism grew by 5%, Brazilian destinations recorded an
increase of 6%. The number was also almost triple the 2% recorded in other countries in South America. With this, Brazil achieved an unprecedented six million foreign tourists. Another factor that shows the good performance of promotional activities carried out by Embratur was the increased influx of revenue through tourism. Foreign tourists spent US$ 6.7 billion last year, consolidating the growth of over 170% in the last 10 years. Revenue from foreigners in Brazil in 2013 also exceeded the export of cars, which totaled US$ 5.718 billion. Last year, Brazil hosted two major events that attracted thousands of tourists from around the world: the Confederations Cup, which took place in six cities, and the World Youth Day, which attracted more than three million people to the sands of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. According to the research done by Embratur, 90% of tourists who came to WYD said they intend to return to the country.

Germany is the leading tourist market in Europe >> Many Germans enjoy ecotourism and adventure tourism and there is no better destination than Brazil. If you enjoy football and sport, then there is no comparison to Brazil, as in June, the country will host the FIFA World Cup. Based on these details and the fact that Germany occupy the leading position among European countries whose tourists visit Brazil, Embratur, the official promotion of Brazil agency, decided to participate not only in this edition of ITB, but also in other events such as Imex. “In Europe, the German market exports the most tourists to Brazil. I am reminding everybody that the ITB is a unique opportunity to sell this brand, since it is an event where there will be several decision makers present. It should be noted that there is huge interest in the trade and the public products and services related to ecotourism and adventure, where more and more Germans have researched Brazil as a reference”, says Marco Lomanto, director of Products and Destinations of Embratur. Marco Lomanto highlights the fact that ITB is considered a fair with multiproducts, pointing to market trends. “This is not just a trade fair for the German market, but it is also able to generate trends for the world market, and Brazil has to take advantage of this fact. We
guidance”. With this, Marco Lomanto has no doubt that the World Cup will indeed be a watershed for Brazilian tourism. “It will be a fantastic legacy because people will experience our diversity and products that are placed on the shelves of some operators. This will generate an increase in both leisure and corporate travel. It is at this time that tourists will have the chance to meet this multicultural and diverse Brazil and they will be enchanted”, he says.
“Goal to Brazil” are strengthening our work with the reopening of our promotional offices abroad, called EBTs. With this, we will strengthen our projects with press trips, not to mention other shows that we will participate in this year, such as Imex”, he says. For the FIFA World Cup, in addition to investments in infrastructure, there are planned projects to improve the quality for inbound tourists. Embratur will promote, along with the host cities, a true checklist aimed at improving experiences for inbound international tourists. “The 12 host cities will get involved. Tourists who arrive at airports and bus terminals will receive promotional material and will be supported by people who will give information and general
>> Lomanto reminds us that in all the fairs, including ITB, there will be a Cup module, with information and events to publicize the event, which takes place in June in Brazil. “We will have editions of a program called “Goal to Brazil”, which will promote the cultural and gastronomic diversity of the cities in the country, with its attractiveness”, he explains. The “Goal to Brazil” events will take place in London, England (19/ 03), Santiago, Chile (03/04), Buenos Aires, Argentina (10/04) and Paris, France (17 /04). These cities are considered as strategic places for the dissemination of information about the attractions of the country and its diversity.
New flights and huge exposure will mark 2014 >> Europe accounts for 28% of Brazil’s annual tourist arrivals, with a total of 1.6 million. Germany is a noteworthy contributor, since it emerged as the number one exporter of European tourists. According to the Director of International Markets of Embratur (the body responsible for promoting Brazil abroad), Leila Holsbach, the trend is the number of tourists arriving in the country has grown every year. In 2013, over six million foreigners visited Brazil. “We will reach seven million visitors by the end of the year and the 600 thousand visitor figure initially expected for FIFA World Cup will be exceeded. The mark of 6 million was an historic milestone, but now, with the increased exposure that Brazil is having due to its mega-events, the likelihood is this number will increase”, she predicts. In January and February this year, Embratur attended some tourism fairs around the 10 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | ITB

world: Vakantiebeurs (Netherlands), FITUR (Spain) and ANATO (Colombia). In all, it was evident that there is a demand for information about Brazil. “During international fairs we understand and deal with the great public interest that the 12 host cities of the 2014 World Cup have are generating. Demand is
high in Brazilian destinations in general and for information concerning the competition”, says Leila, who represented Embratur at ITB and will focus on the German market and other events throughout the year (see table of fairs of the first half of 2014). “We will repeat our agenda and jazz it up with activities at trade shows. This is a year that will be marked by the interest of the world in relation to Brazil”. To further boost the number of visitors from Germany who choose Brazil as a destination for leisure or business, there are new flights being launched in the coming months. “We have the new Air Europa flight that will connect Brazil / Chile / Spain and we will have a Tap flight between Manaus / Belém / Lisbon. This will strengthen the attractiveness for more tourists. We still have the launch of the Air France flight between Paris and Brasilia, which is a very important connection for the Brazilian Midwest”, says Leila.

Business and Events Tourism
Business and Events Tourism to expand by 14% >> In December 2013, Brazil beat its record for international tourists, reaching six million foreign visitors. This broke the mark of five million visitors that the country had been receiving annually since 2005. Out of these tourists, over 25% came for Business, Events and Conventions Tourism. The segment is going through a historic period in Brazil and it has been growing for a few years now and above the national average. According to the 9th Annual Survey of Economic Situation of Tourism – conducted by Faculdade Getúlio Vargas (FGV) – Events Tourism increased its revenues the most in 2012, with an increase of 23.3% over the previous year. “We do not have consolidated 2013 data, but the expectation is an increase of about 14% of the Brazilian Events and Business Tourism market, reaching US$ 34.5 billion, according to GBTA (Global Business Travel Association). This study estimates that in the next two years Brazil is expected to surpass Italy, France and the United Kingdom in the Business Tourism market”, says Anita Pires, president of the Brazilian Association of Events Companies (ABEOC Brazil). In 2014, at least 11 convention centres will receive investments from the Ministry of Tourism for renovation or construction. According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). Brazil is ranked seventh among the countries that held international events in 2012. The country
held 368 international events in 2012 alone. According to Anita Pires, the events - small, medium or large - today have a positive impact on the entire supply chain of the tourism industry. This is because foreign tourists who visit Brazil in this segment have an average expenditure of US$ 127 a day during their stay in the country, twice the figure spent by leisure tourists. “Increasingly, companies and business, medical or cultural associations see events as

good marketing and a good communication tool for loyal customers, to launch new products or to get new partners. We have to make the event more attractive by introducing cultural and leisure opportunities so the participant will bring their family and stay a day or two extra in each destination. This way, touristic service suppliers such as agencies, hotels and cultural groups benefit”, adds the president of ABEOC. Mega-events are considered important for the sector’s growth and will leave an important legacy on the world of events and business. The visibility that Brazil has received for holding the FIFA World Cup, World Youth Day and the Olympics confirms to global promoters that if the country can organize events of this size, it can also organize conferences, seminars, fairs or any other event. To contribute to the certification of the industry, ABEOC Brazil and the National Brazil’s Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE), with support from the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) and the Brazilian Federation of Food and Lodging (FBHA), launched in March 2013 the Qualification and Certification of Companies of Events Program, which is training 270 companies in the industry to offer efficiency and quality. In July 2014, ABNT will begin the auditing phase to evaluate the companies in accordance with the criteria of the Quality Label ABEOC Brazil.

Sun and Sand Tourism
>> Responsible for over 60% of foreigners coming to Brazil, the Sun and Sand segment is the flagship of Brazilian tourism. With over eight thousand kilometres of coastline, which account for about two thousand beaches, Sun and Sand tourism attracts, on average, 1.7 million foreign visitors and about 27 million Brazilians each year, according to recent studies about tourism demand in the country. In Brazil, visitors have the opportunity to experience multiple destinations in a single country and have a much more complete trip. Some beaches have warmer waters, such as the ones in the Northeast Region, while the ones in the Southeast have colder water. Not to mention the vegetation that changes completely. Some destinations have dunes and others, forests. There are also some with a mix of mountains and urban buildings, as is the case in Rio de Janeiro. A major reason for attracting so many European tourists Germany is the 3rd largest source of tourists that come to Brazil, behind only the United States and Argentina - is the amount of sunny days. European destinations have low temperatures during more than half of the year. Brazil, as it is a tropical country, has milder temperatures,

even in winter, attracting tourists. Focused on this differential, in December 2013, Embratur launched the website “Sunny Days Brasil” (www. sunnydaysbrasil.com), which calculates the amount of days of sun that each potential foreign tourist had in his home city in 2013. According to the website, Berlin had only 134 days of sunshine, which means that “37 % of the days of the year were sunny, had warmth, happiness and good humor”, says the new page of Embratur. Meanwhile, people in Rio had 212 days of sunshine (58 % of the year) and locals from Fortaleza had 239 (65%). Out of the 368 companies surveyed by Sindetur (Association of Tourism Enterprises), 45% said that tourist movement will register an average increase of 24.5% at the beginning of the year compared with the same period in 2013. The most frequently mentioned
destinations by the national tourism agencies, based on sales to consumers, were Fortaleza (23.6%), Rio de Janeiro (16.6%), Natal (11.5%), Maceió (10.9%) and Salvador (9.9%). According to the Study of Domestic Tourist Demand, the months of December and January (summer) are responsible for over 30% of trips taken within the country by Brazilians. During this year, Embratur will invest R$ 48 million in the promotion of Brazilian destinations in Europe. The developments for tourism in Brazil in the coming years indicate true growth. According to international institutions, Brazil will climb a position in Tourism Economics, from 6th to 5th, due to an increase in domestic tourism. But according to the Ministry of Tourism, with the National Tourism Plan, Brazil could be 3rd in Tourism Economics, before 2022.

Nautical Tourism
A cruise ship in the Port of Rio
Nautical tourism interest is growing >> Atlantic coastal cruises, boats and schooners on rivers, lakes and natural and artificial lagoons… Brazilian nautical tourism is a booming activity and should increase more in the next decade. With an eye on future demand, the Ministry of Tourism has invested R$ 570 million in structuring and upgrading tourism attractions that give life to the seashore and to the banks of rivers and lakes in the country. Among the various projects are the revitalization of the coast of Forte Beach (Bahia), the building of a tourist complex on the river bank in Maués (Amazonas), the urbanization of the edge of Aracruz (Espírito Santo) and the urbanization of the coast of Beira Rio, in Barra do Corda (Maranhão). Most of the tourist activities in Brazil are near water, due to the beaches, lakes, rivers and spa towns. To encourage Brazilians and foreigners to enjoy the 8,000 kilometres of coastline and about 35 thousand km of inland waterways in Brazil, the Ministry of Tourism launched a booklet with tips about destinations and attractions for nautical tourism. Tourists who choose to go on trips on their own boats can select and define their routes with the support of this manual. Brazil ranks third amongst countries that

have the greatest potential for the utilization of navigable inland waters, and today the country is also considered one of the world’s biggest markets for cruises. The main ports that large vessels visit are located in Santos (SP) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), followed by Fortaleza (CE), Natal (RN), Fernando de Noronha (PE), Recife (PE), Maceió (AL), Salvador (BA), Ilhéus (BA), Vitória (ES), Búzios (RJ), Cabo Frio (RJ), Angra dos Reis (RJ), Paraty (SP), Ilhabela (SP), Ilha Grande (RJ), São Francisco do Sul (SC), Porto Belo (SC) and Rio Grande (RS). There are many possibilities to cruise along
the Brazil’s rivers and there are several options on the São Francisco River alone, which is about 2800 km in length and crosses the state of Bahia. The river passes thorugh Pernambuco, Sergipe and Alagoas and flows into the Atlantic. In Alto Sertão de Sergipe, the Xingó Tourist Complex allows visitors to go boating past the rocky walls of the canyon of the São Francisco River. The Tietê, Paraná, Araguaia, Madeira, Tapajós, and the largest of them, the Amazon river, at more than 6000 km, are some of the navigable rivers that already have special tourism activities and water sports.
Market Brazil has a fleet of just over 70 thousand boats over 16 feet long, including speedboats, sailboats and yachts. There are about 400 nautical local support sites in 19 Brazilian states that service this number of vessels. There are 103 shipyards, 445 equipment and accessories manufacturers, 84 specialist retailers, 23 suppliers and 12 importers. The highly popular European ‘Blue Flag’ program came to Brazil in 2009. The purpose of this is to create evaluation parameters for beaches and marinas so that the standards remain high, thus giving tourists excellence in water quality and environmental education initiatives. With Blue Flag, besides getting international visibility in the environmental sector, the destinations add attributes that distinguish it within the travel market. Worldwide, 3,650 blue flags have been raised. Currently, the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro hold two flags each, granted in 2013. The program has existed since 1987 and is open to marinas and beaches, rivers and lakes.

Hotels
The demand for alternative accommodation in Brazil increases
Brazilian Hospitality is still expanding >> Until mid-2013, Brazil only had 25,000 hotel units (hotels, lodges, resorts and hostels), with approximately 290 thousand rooms. But this number is growing according to the president of the Brazilian Federation of Food and Lodging (FBHA), Alexandre Sampaio. He says that hospitality in the country has advanced strongly due to the increase of business tourism, the number of domestic tourists who have started to travel and the number of international tourists that Brazil has received, which, in 2013, reached six million for the first time in the country’s history. For the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, which will take place this year and in 2016 respectively, the hotel industry will not be a problem since it will have more than enough rooms. “We’ve had a policy of encouraging the expansion of hotels and
apart-hotels, focusing on the major events. Many companies are investing in the sector, such as the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), one of the main drivers of growth in the area”, says the president, who adds that improving mobility and other sectors that are indirectly linked to tourism have also helped develop hospitality. According to Sampaio, although the sector has been rising, some aspects still need tweaking, like the lack of low cost hotels in certain places and sustainability is still a concern. However, one of the biggest hindrances to the hotel industry is the tax process. “The industry has services that are taxed by the government, which increases and complicates the construction of new hotels, the hiring of labour etc. Nowadays, it takes 10-15 years to recover the capital invested, causing a high loss to the investor “, says Sampaio.
Research shows booking behavior of leisure guests The Mapie Consulting Group conducted a survey with the support of Brazilian Resorts about the behaviour of hotel guests in three and four star hotels and resorts. 1,337 people from all regions of the country were surveyed. Only 17.81% of them booked a hotel through a travel agent or operator. The most commonly used medium was the hotel’s own website, with 29.61%, followed by Online Travel Agencies (OTA’s), with 26.29% and Reservation Centres, with 22.36%. The sample comprises 46% men and 54% women. The majority (29.86%) are between 41 and 50 years old; and over 75% have a professional qualification.

Foreigners have increasingly sought alternative types of accommodation in the country. Hostels, campsites and rented houses accounted for 17% of foreigners who came to the country during 2012. The number represents almost a fifth which is a significant market share. Hotels remained as the main type of accommodation for international tourists at 50.6 %.
A growing Resort market The occupancy rate of resorts in Brazil has maintained a steady increase in recent years, although the number of apartments remains virtually the same. Rates also remained relatively stable following inflation. These are some of the main conclusions from the survey “Resorts in Brazil 2013”, that BSH International held with the support of the Brazilian Association of Resorts (Resorts Brazil). The survey sought to analyze the performance of the tourist market between 2010 and 2012 and covered 26,820 housing units. The research pointed to an increase of 1,780 housing units before 2015. Between 2011 and 2012, occupancy increased 9.3%. Over the same period, the daily rate rose 7.5%, to R$ 501.82. Overall, Brazilian tourists are responsible for 89% of the occupancy of resorts in the country.

Gastronomy
A journey through Brazilian cuisine With over 500 years of history, Brazilian cuisine is the result of a great mix of many traditions, ingredients and dishes that have been introduced not only by the native indigenous population, but also from all the immigrants that have ventured to Brazil. Each region of the country has its own individuality due to the differences in climate, topography, soil type, vegetation and culture.
Northern Region
Th region has a large Indian influence in its culture and of course This in its cuisine. With a large variety of fish and exotic fruits, we can say that the northern cuisine is the one that has the most Indian influence. In the waters of the Amazon River, fish make up a large part of the regions culinary food; the most popular are tucunaré (peacock bass), pirarucu (arapaima), pacu, tambaqui and jaraqui. Fruit is also common and the most well known are cupuaçu, açaí, guaraná, tucumã and peach-palm.
Northeastern Region
The Northeast Region has the longest stretch of the Brazilian coast and it´s gastronomy has Portuguese, Indian and especially African influences. Its dishes that have a presence of pepper and sstrong t other strong, spices stand out. Among the typical dishes are tapioca, vatapá, fish stew, goat stew (buchada), fried crab, beef jerky and many more. Bahia concentrates a large African influence in its kitchen and has three basic elements: coconut milk, palm oil and pepper. It is said that one o of its main specialties is the famous acarajé, which is made from cowpea.
Midwestern Region
The second largest region in Brazil is also one of the least populated. Indian influence is the main source of its cuisine but it also has contributions from Africa, Portugal, Italy, Bolivia and Paraguay. In Mato Grosso do Sul, due to its proximity to the rivers, there are a variety of typical fish dishes, but of course there are also meat dishes. A type of rice called carreteiro with beef jerky is often served on farms as it iss a simple dish made with rice and dried meat.

Southeastern Region
This region is known for the diversity of its cuisine due to the large concentration of Italian and Portuguese immigrants. Their habits and customs have heavily influenced the local cuisine but there are also African and indigenous influences. Delicacies such as meat and bean stew (feijoada), cod balls, cheese bread, chicken with gravy, shrimp stew, and chicken pie should be tasted. São Paulo is known worldwide as a capital of gastronomy. This is due to the large number of national and international restaurants it has. Its main influence is Italian cuisine, and pizza is the most consumed dish in the state.
Southern Region
With considerable European influence, the coldest region in the country is heavily into its seafood, because of its long coast, which obviously favours the fish soups and stews. Especially in Santa Catarina, Oysters are very popular. Florianópolis, the state capital, has the largest oyster production in Brazil, producing 80% of the country’s consumption. It isn’t just fish and seafood that are popular in the south; the famous local barbecue is very traditional in Rio Grande do Sul.

According to a statement released by the Federation, Campinas was chosen out of 27 venues that were visited by representatives on behalf of the sports structure and logistics. Team base camps boost tourism >> Brazil expects revenue of R$ 110 billion from the FIFA World Cup. Of this amount, some will come direct from taxes and another part will result from increased consumer consumption, which will add R$ 5 billion to the economy, especially for the cities that will host the national teams training centres. Some of these cities are already on the Brazilian tourist map; others expect a push from any advertising that the event will bring. Paraná Department of Tourism is hoping that Foz do Iguaçu will be the most visited place after the host cities. It is the gateway for many South Americans visiting the country, according to a study by the Ministry of Tourism and it is the third most popular destination for foreign leisure tourists. The lushness of the landscapes and the largest set of waterfalls in the world means Iguazu Falls should be part of any tourist itinerary focusing on nature. The city will play host to the South Korean delegation during the World Cup. In addition to hosting several matches, São Paulo, was chosen by 15 Football Associations to have their bases here: Portugal, Nigeria, Bosnia, Russia, Japan, Mexico, Costa Rica, France, Honduras, Iran, Colombia, United States, Ivory Coast, Belgium and Algeria.

has set targets to meet the influx. The renovation of bus stops and the portico at the entrance of the city are some of the projects that have received investment. The production of promotional material with the slogan “Teresópolis, home of the Brazilian National Team” is also planned.
Interior of São Paulo >> It could be said that the Viracopos International Airport will be the 12th player for seven of the teams, who are competing in the World Cup. The players, coaching staff, journalists, fans and businessmen from Japan, Russia, Ivory Coast, Honduras, Algeria, Portugal and Nigeria will land to go
>> Mexico and Costa Rica have confirmed that their teams will stay in Santos (SP). The expectation is that the city will receive over 25 thousand tourists during the World Cup, most of them Mexicans. In the case of tourists from Costa Rica, the city is expecting the arrival of about 1,500 fans. To better serve the tourists, the city is improving the infrastructure at various points in addition to Spanish and English courses for employees. Mexico is one of the countries that take the most travelling fans to World Cups. With this in mind, the Mexican travel agency Mundomex has chartered an MSC ship, which will be based at the Port of Santos and will do various trips following the Mexican team during the tournament. The vessel, with capacity for 4,350 people, will be in Brazil for 32 days, and will remain docked for four days in the city for the semi finals.
Hotels get ready to serve the national teams Some hotels, particularly in the South and Southeast, have received lists of “demands” from the associations ranging from pest control to historic games from past generations and access to TV stations from their respective countries. The Portuguese have asked for the rooms to have televisions with inputs for video games and enhanced Internet so the athletes can play together over a network. The French requested a room full of PS4’s, Xboxes or Nintendo Wii’s. France have also ordered that soap bars are replaced by liquid soap dispensers. “It is important to understand what the expected standard is, so as not to be caught by surprise. They will need a 24-hour working kitchen, high speed Internet (a necessity) and comfort. Our job is to anticipate the needs of guests. The
investment should reach US$ 1 million”, said the general director of La Torre Resort, Luigi Rotunno, which will host the Swiss national team. In the case of Portobello Resort & Safari, the agreement with the Italian Football Association was only closed in the last six months, so, the intention is to hire Italian speakers, as well as offering courses for employees. More modest teams like the Ivory Coast made more consistent requests with the event: better lighting on the training pitches and the upgrading of gym equipment. “The effect of the World Cup in South Africa was felt a year later. Tourism in Brazil has very large potential. As we are in Rio, we are even more focused”, said the president of BHG, Eduardo Bartolomeo, who will receive the England team at the Royal Tulip Hotel.

Salvador: the German base for the FIFA World Cup >> The journey of the German national team in the 2014 FIFA World Cup begins in Bahia, where Brazil´s history also started. It was in this State more precisely in the city of Porto Seguro – where the Portuguese sailors moored their ships when the country was discovered in 1500. The German team’s headquarters will be in the city of Santa Cruz de Cabrália, in the southern part of the state. The site, which is being built, will be called Campo Bahia (Bahia Pitch), and is being developed exclusively for the German national team. Fans who want to include the city on their trip will not regret it. Located in the region called the Discovery Coast, Santa Cruz de Cabrália has numerous beaches almost untouched by man, and there are navigable rivers that are ideal for water sports and sightseeing. It is located 753 kilometres from the state capital, Salvador, and the best way to get there is from Porto Seguro Airport. Salvador is the stage of Germany’s first game, which is on 16th June, at 13h, when Miloslav Klose and his teammates will walkout onto the field of the Arena Fonte Nova to face Portugal. The state capital is a city with multiple tourism options and historical tourism being one of them. The architectural heritage
of Pelourinho is beautiful and it is the backdrop for some sightseeing that includes churches and colonial buildings. In the centre, it is worth visiting the Modelo Market and the Fair of São Joaquim as they are popular cultural centres and here you can experience the best gastronomy and regional crafts that have been strongly influenced by their African origins. In the neighborhood of Bonfim, you will find the most famous church in Salvador, Senhor do Bonfim and annually, local women (devotees of Candomblé religion) dress up in character costumes and wash the steps of the temple with perfumed water. As the women work, they are watched by a crowd of faithful and curious bystanders. The ribbons of Senhor do Bonfim are also famous and promise protection for wearers and should be worn tied around the wrist until it breaks as a sign of good luck.
Beaches >> There are 50 kilometres of beaches, which offer tourists a plethora of options. The highlight being the famous Itapuã, Stella Maris and Porto da Barra, a beach which is set between two fortresses (Santa Maria and São Diego). The Guardian newspaper considered it as one of the three most beautiful in the world in 2006. Divers find the weather conditions here ideal for water sports and tourists will come across the sunken remains of ancient ships as Salvador has the largest number of shipwrecks recorded in Brazil. Conditions are generally good for windsurfing, kite surfing and surfing. The waters reach an average of 26º C, which favours these and other water sports.

The international and regional cuisines are equally represented in the local restaurants. To help preserve the richness of Jericoacoara, a part of its National Park has been transformed into an
Environmental Protection Area. At night, it is recommended to go to the iconic Pedra Furada (Holed Stone), which takes its name from the huge rock with a large hole through the middle. Here, you will find forró (typical dance and rhythm), reggae and electronic music that invade the streets of the village. This is a great experience if you like dancing and live music. The mild climate, the warm water and the constant sun that is always shining, make up a special place that visitors love.

A study by the Fundação Instituto de Administração (FIA), commissioned by the Ministry of Sports (Study of potential socioeconomic impacts of the Olympic Games in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2016), forecasts an influx of 380 thousand foreign visitors to Rio de Janeiro during the Olympics, who will spend money on lodging, food, trade and services to the tune of around US$ 152 million. It is additionally expected a considerable impact on the city’s image and its attractiveness as a centre of leisure and business tourism.

To improve access to the south zone and Barra da Tijuca, which will house many of the Olympic venues and the Media Centre (International Broadcast Center, IBC), three BRT lines and a subway line will be built by 2015. The government’s intention is to link the three modes of transportation (train, metro and bus) to give easy access to the major venues, such as the Maracanã.
Sports Complexes >> The Olympics is a unique project that brings together all the various sports inside the city limits. There are already four existing sport facilities in Barra, Copacabana, Maracanã and Deodoro. The Olympic project is based on the use of existing facilities and most of them were built for the Pan American Games in Rio in 2007. Only 26% of the permanent facilities will have to be built. The Maracanã stadium and four other stadiums in the host cities will be renovated for the FIFA World Cup 2014, bringing them up to Olympic standard. Nine more venues will be built as a permanent legacy to the Games.

Belém captivates by its multitude of attractions >> Faith tourism, the exuberance of nature and a region that values its customs make Pará a single destination. Travellers who have the chance to visit the state capital, Belém, will realize that time is short you must take advantage of everything the city has to offer. Despite its nature, Belém has been developing and now has the air of modern city. There are now various squares (all wooden to help alleviate the equatorial heat that envelopes the city every day) littered amongst large monuments and churches. Belém is a city rich in History. Some of the most conspicuous buildings in the capital are the Forte do Presépio (Fort of
Nativity), Espaço Cultural Casa das Onze Janelas (House of Eleven Windows) and Sé Cathedral, which together were constructed by the Portuguese during the colonial era. Ver o Peso Market, another must-see in the town is a warren of stalls selling all types of traditional products from the region, like spices and handicrafts made from vines, fruits and herbs taken from the forest. The fair opens at dawn and closes around 15h. A good time to arrange with family and friends to go to the Dock Station is 15h, which for the last 13 years has been a popular tourist destination during the peak season, offering boat tours that end with the picturesque view
of the sunset. Furthermore, the area offers good night life with bars and restaurants and craft stalls with typical products from the region. Happy Hour commences after it starts getting cooler in the late afternoon and this is when the bars offer attractive discounts on food and drinks to help keep tourists there until the end of the night. The Happy Hour is taken seriously in the Docks Station and to get a table you may need a little patience, especially in restaurants that offer locally brewed beer. The complex also includes a fish market with several Amazonian species, plus an indigenous museum depicting the stories of the main tribes that still live in Pará.

An eco-friendly destination >> Venturing into the various corners of Pará means, above all, to be at one with nature and it is full of possibilities. The state has places that are perfect invitations for diving, surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, rafting, adventure racing, rallying, trekking and horseback riding. Actractions that Pará also boasts, although a little bit away from the city, are forests, caves, waterfalls, rivers, rocky areas and plenty of sunshine. Of course, first of all, we can’t fail to mention a must see show of nature, the pororoca. This phenomenon results from the meeting of the waters of the Amazon River with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon Caribbean is an unforgettable place as it has a number of beaches located on the banks of the Tapajós River, in western Pará, formed from white sand, clear waters and is surrounded by forest. If, after all this you still have time available, there are lots of tours for all ages in various cities and villages in Pará. Take a few days to enjoy lush walks and it has the added advantage of being able to offer an exciting and fascinating experience. You are sure to have fun here by meeting people and getting to know different customs and nature is always close by. Ecotourism in itself is part of the day-to-day working of the cities. In the metropolitan region of Belém alone, there are six environmental parks. In each of them, the Amazonian flora provides endless
surprises and even in the urban area, with over one million inhabitants, about 500 animal species have been recorded. In the Mangal das Garças park, located on the banks of river Guamá, a piece of the Amazon has been recreated. The complex has restaurant, nursery butterflies and hummingbirds, an aviary, snack bars and a lookout tower. In an old iron shed at the entrance of the park a venue was built to house exhibitions and sell plants and crafts, a definite must-do. For those who want a little more tranquility, then a trip to Urumajó, known as the birthplace of turtles, is worth it. Incidentally, several of
the biodiversity reserves are in Pará. They were chosen for being shrines to unique worldwide species. There you can see mountains, caves and ancient life that create a sequence of surprises. Finally, the largest river island in the world, Marajó, is here and it is an ideal place to get a little closer with the rural reality of the state. In the immense farms you may find caimans, capybaras, monkeys and herons. An interesting experience is to stay on a farm. For too long these places were only enjoyed by the locals that lived there but currently, rural tourists now find Marajó an ideal place to understand the day-to-day lives of the Amazonian people.

>> The State of Amazonas covers most of the Northern Region of Brazil and is rich with fauna and flora. Its people are very welcoming, which is evident by the reception it gives to its tourists. A unique feature of Amzonas are the hotels that are located in the middle of the forest, well known for being exotic and their permanent contact with nature, not forgetting a good service and security. There are many options ranging from luxurious suites with air-conditioning to older rustic ones, where the simplicity is the charm itself. Manaus, the state capital, on the other hand, is responsible for harboring much of the Amazon rainforest. As a result there are trees everywhere as it is the wettest state capital in the country. This fact alone would be a nice reason to visit Manaus, but there are
also many tourist attractions in this city that unites rich culture, modernity and nature, besides being host to one of the most beautiful spectacles of nature: the meeting of the waters of the Negro and Solimões rivers. Manaus also has an excellent business tourism infrastructure. The construction of new hotels, which has increased in the last three years due to the FIFA World Cup, has significantly improved the number of apartments in the city. Over R$ 3 million will have been invested in the infrastructure of Eduardo Gomes International Airport by the end of 2013. The improvements include the restoration and expansion of the aircraft apron and modernization of the passenger terminal. Symbol of global ecotourism >> To begin with, the biodiversity of the Amazon region is unique. It is the richest in the world and harbours 60% of all life forms on the planet and it is estimated that about one million plant and animal species are resident under its mighty green canopy. The ecotourism segment has emerged as an economic alternative to the sustainable development of the Amazon and as a way not only to generate income for residents, but mainly to encourage the preservation of this natural heritage. Ecotourism can be seen and experienced in the Amazon all year round due to the seasonality that occurs in the rainforest. It is possible to visit the forest in the wet and dry seasons and to see where communities live. As well as hiking in the forest, canoe riding down aquatic trails, observing the natural beauty and indigenous tribes; tourists still have the opportunity to enjoy the life with locals, getting to know their way of life and their daily routine. However, the best way to discover the natural wonders of the Amazon is aboard a boat and you
can choose large and luxurious or small and cosy with hammocks. There is an Archipelago with hundreds of islands cut out of the landscape and it is possible to see many species including alligators, pink dolphins and birds. During the dry season, the natural labyrinth reveals numerous white sandy river beaches. There are other exciting options, for adrenaline seekers and to experience unforgettable moments and memorable experiences; The Amazon is the perfect place for this. There is nowhere else where you can find so many interesting attractions within adventure tourism. The best and most interesting are always in perfect harmony with nature. Moreover, qualifications and training of the professionals working in this sector guarantees safety and a lot of action, sweat and adrenaline in the heart of the forest.

Let´s also not forget that the flight time from some major European capitals is merely 7 hours. It is the closest Brazilian state capital to Europe. There are dune buggies here but for safety, the buggies are driven by trained drivers. Each buggy can carry four passengers at a time and at high-speed, they glide along imaginary roads constantly going up and down. It is pure fun. Still in Genipabu another local attraction are raft trips. Do not be surprised to stumble across camels as they are very common here. Tourists can also enjoy the traditional “skibunda”. The best time to enjoy the beauties and charms of Pipa is during low season - from March to November. Attractions are everywhere with buggy rides along the beach, enjoying the contours of the great cliffs that frame the coast, to the spectacle of the sunset in the late afternoon.
Pipa is a former fishing village that has been transformed into a charming village, with good hospitality, gastronomy, shopping and services, but without losing its rusticity. There are many craft shops and, of course, several restaurants, bars and inviting hidden corners. But the biggest attractions are the beaches. Amor (Love) Beach is obviously preferred by couples. The trendy Madeiro

The beach is split into two, on the right are the surfers and on the left is Dolphin Bay. If you would like to get up close and personal with the dolphins, then your best bet is to rent a kayak and paddle out to meet them. The animals surround the boats giving everybody a fantastic experience. Another interesting place for nature lovers, is the Ecological Sanctuary of Pipa, which can be accessed from the Route to the Sun. Short and easy trails through the forest that covers the cliffs lead you to lookouts with beautiful views and there is an observatory of marine turtles. Other tours are the schooner rides (some have local forró live music) and in late afternoon there is nothing better than enjoying the sunset on Cacimbinha Beach or from the Chapadão Lookout. >> Although São Paulo is known worldwide as the business capital of Brazil, the city is also very rich culturally. There are numerous options for exploring Brazil’s largest city. In addition to the internationally renowned museums, where you can find exhibitions, outdoor performances and theatres that house huge and sophisticated events, the cultural mix is due, in particular, to miscegenation and the cosmopolitan spirit that has always characterised the state capital. Dining and nightlife are also very prestigious, attractive and a great opportunity to experience a little of all that the city has to offer. Themed tours are a great way to get to know the city. One of the most interesting is a tour of the architecture of the Historic Centre, with buildings, churches and the city’s many monuments. It reveals the enormity and the political and economic strength that the city has. Among the places on the route are the Monastery of São Bento in the São Francisco Church and the Ordem Terceira do Carmo Church. Espírito Santo >> One of the cities in Brazil that keeps growing more and more economically and investing in improvements, both for the welfare of the community and for its visitors is Vitória, the state capital of Espírito Santo. The city is an island connected to the mainland by seven bridges and has been developed in a sustainable way. This state capital has the highest per capita income and the highest Human Development Index (HDI) in southeastern Brazil. The wealth of Vitória goes beyond the local economy. It´s reflected in the natural and architectural beauties, history, on the preservation of traditional cultural groups and the offer of adventure and leisure tourism. When the city was officially founded in 1551, the Indians called it, Ilha do Mel (Honey Island), thanks to its beauty, pleasant climate and mangroves all set in a calm water bay. The landscape that fascinated the Indians almost 500 years ago, today delights tourists. Its beaches, connected to the climate and ecological balance, are ideal for water sports. They have also helped to preserve the tradition of sea fishing within the city. The architecture is also surprising. A walk through downtown reveals some beautiful buildings. Beaches and waterfalls help you enjoy the summer in the best possible way >> Leaving Floripa and heading towards the Serra Verde e Mar (Green Mountains and Sea), you will find more natural beauty. The coast of Santa Catarina is one of the most beautiful in Brazil and there are dozens of beaches with white sand and clear blue water. Verdant hills, bustling resorts and bucolic crevices surround many of them. There are vast differences as some are almost wild, some have sheltered coves and others are open sea beaches. The smallest city of Santa Catarina is located on a peninsula with an abundance of bays, coves and beaches. In Bombinhas, the transparent waters and marine biodiversity attract scuba divers, who will find ideal conditions for snorkelling and well-equipped scuba diving agencies. Graced with beautiful beaches, Bombinhas offers good conditions for surfing, sailing and water skiing. 75% of its expanse consists of protected areas and exuberant nature. Ecological trails will take

or cosy cottages and tourists that arrive in Serra Catarinense (Santa Catarina Mountains Region) can combine the pleasures of rusticity with the delights of an abundant and rich gastronomy. The quiet city of São Joaquim is one of the highlights of the region. In late September, the beautiful blossom of the apple and cherry trees fill the air with their sweet scent. Lages and Urubici are two other cities that are worth visiting. The first is considered the national capital of
Rural Tourism, where visitors can do activities related to farm life, such as fishing, horse riding, milking cows and enjoying a nice barbecue. Urubici also houses numerous waterfalls, rivers, springs, caves, trails, hills and mountains. A good tip is to go to Morro da Igreja (Church Hill), which is the highest point in the state which stands at 1828 metres. The hill also has a huge rock with a 30 metre wide hole in the middle that is known as Pedra Furada (Holed Stone).
In Aparados da Serra, you will find some breath taking landscapes. The region is located between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and has the largest number of water springs and the largest area of preserved Atlantic Forest in Brazil. There are cliffs here that look like they were carved out of the rock and stretch up to more than 1,200 metres and at the base, there is a crystal clear river, some natural pools, rapids and waterfalls. Gravatal, Tubarão, Santa Rosa de Lima, Itá, Treze Tílias, Piratuba, Videira, Águas de Chapecó, São Carlos, Palmitos, Quilombo and São João do Oeste complete a tourist route full of discoveries. Cycle Tourism attracts visitors to many areas of the State >> Various groups around the world are coming together more and more to visit and explore diverse destinations and to exercise at the same time, through Cycle Tourism. In this case, the bike is not only used as a means of transport but as a travel companion. Santa Catarina was the first Brazilian state to create tours to be enjoyed on short trips by bicycle. The cyclists remain in close contact with nature and local cultures with the help of guides and specialist companies. Cycle tourists take their time to amble along as they seek to understand more about the places where they are going by making the most of culture, cuisine, nature and especially contact with other Virtually cities ppeople. pe opple le. By the side of these roads live people of simple habits, rural workers, farmers and peasants, who always have a good story to tell. These roads provide access to architectural elements such as houses, huts, mills, churches and monuments, many of which are identified with the local culture and colonization. During the many possible journeys, the cycle tourist will come across traditional festivals, local folklore, customs, the language, the cuisine and the different beliefs. These cities have over the years helped preserve many characteristics of German and Italian colonization. Nowadays, there are organized tours in the Greater Florianópolis area, the Costa Verde & Mar, Serra Catarinense and Caminho dos Cânions. The Whale Route is a bicycle tour that goes along the beach from Laguna until Palhoça and is scheduled between June and November, which is the right whale season. Santa Catarina - sport and adventure >> Sport cannot be left out of the list of attractions in Santa Catarina. Many hills and woods surround the capital Florianópolis whilst Lagoa da Conceição is a benchmark for sports for both men and women. As well as water activities such as windsurfing and stand up paddling, there are also trails around the area. One of the most famous is the Canto dos Araçás which passes through the middle of the Atlantic Forest and leads up to the small community of Canto da Ilha, which was declared a Cultural Preservation Area for preserving the Azorean fisherman and lace making culture. It is possible to take a boat here but the four hours it takes to walk here add the word “adventure” to the tour, which is after all why people are here! A shorter trail is Gurita, which passes through the Parque Municipal da Lagoa do Peri, There you will see some historic houses from the 19th century. The trail
leads to a waterfall with natural pools. The park offers guides by appointment only and the walk lasts about an hour. Also by Peri Lagoon you can trek to Ribeirão da Ilha, which is a more difficult walk, due to the two hours it takes walking next to large holes. In the small community in the south of the island, you can see a traditional mill, fruit from the Azorean colonization, and sample the famous oysters of Florianópolis. Not only is the land and water good for sports, but the city’s air is good too, as paragliding is very popular here. You can fly from Lagoa Hills, Mole Hills or Santo Amaro da Imperatriz Hills, in Florianópolis. The tours do depend on good weather though. The flights, which are tandem with a guide, take place over the beautiful landscapes of beaches of Mole, Joaquina and Galheta, Lagoa da Conceição or a valley shrouded in mountains and waterfalls.

Gastronomic Route follows the story of Brazil’s colonisation The ethnic mix that occurred in the South has resulted in culinary mix that is completely different to the rest of the country. Being next to the sea, the cuisine is generally based on seafood. In Caminho dos Príncipes and Vale Europeu, which have German influences, the delicacies are pork and they are cooked with spicy seasonings that create strong flavours. It is obviously washed down with beer. The German influence is present in dishes such as

sauerkraut with vina, kassler (pork chop), eisben (pork knuckle) and bockwurst (sausage). The mit rotkohl (duck with red cabbage) is already an adaptation with native ingredients from Brazilian agriculture. The German bakeries here are definitely worth visiting as they have an array of sweet and savoury delights and one of the most famous is the Appfelstrudel, (apple strudel), but apple coffee cake (cucas) and the various pies are also popular. There are many other colonial
foods and the best of the rest are probably the jams and the homemade sausages. The Italians have the largest immigrant population and they have spread out right across the state. Their typical warm cafeterias are present in all regions with pasta dishes, polenta and chicken. It is worth embarking down a colonial path that will lead to traditional communities in the rural interior, where the etiquettes of these forerunners are still part of everyday life and thus flavours are more authentic.
