A new destination for the world In 2016 Brazil beat its record of foreign tourists, around 6.6 million, an increase of 4.8% compared to 2015. These numbers should to be welcomed but are still far short of the country’s enormous potential. The expectation of the Ministry of Tourism and the entire Brazilian commerce is that these numbers can be further increased in the coming years. The reason is the renovation of the infrastructure and the massive dissemination of the country abroad.
Find your destination
Brazil is today a renewed destination. The FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016 have contributed to this. The major cities that receive tourists have had improvements in urban mobility, new attractions and new hotels. Not to mention the new airports and those that have been renovated. If Brazil is a country rich in natural attractions, such as beautiful beaches and lots of nature, this is now coupled with excellent hotels, complete infrastructure and good services. This upgrade places the country among the top destinations in the world. Brazil is also more accessible. More international airlines serve the country. And not just at its major airports. There is capillarity for visitors to be able to explore the country in a complete way. To cite a few examples, Rio de Janeiro, which showed its beauties to the world during the Olympic Games, has gained new avenues, VLT lines (Light Rail Vehicle), new Metro stations, a renovated port, a refurbishment at its international airport, attractions such as the Museum of Tomorrow and the Olympic Boulevard, not to mention the region of Barra da Tijuca, which now boasts better tourist infrastructure with international standard hotels. Most German tourists who visit Brazil search for sun and beaches that are attractive and in abundance in the country. In 2016, 224,000 Germans visited the destination, ranking seventh in a table of emitters. These are good numbers, but there is still a vast field to be explored, especially now, with a country much more prepared to welcome these visitors. In the following pages, you will be able to check details of this new phase of Brazilian tourism. A product that is renewed and available to travellers from all over the world. Enjoy! 4 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017

Paradisiacal scenarios Paradisiacal beaches, crystal clear waters, white sand dunes and places that seem untouched by humans. This is a little of what you can find on the west coast of Ceará, famous for idyllic scenery, which satisfy all kinds of tourists: adventurous young people, couples, families and newlyweds on honeymoon. The region has some of the most beautiful beaches of Ceará, such as Flecheiras, Icaraí da Amontada, Camocim and the famous Jericoacoara, considered as one of the Setur-CE

most beautiful beaches in the world. The destinations, further away from the state capital Fortaleza, are home to luxury options for those who want comfort and good services and there are cheaper alternatives like hostels and guesthouses. The multiple possibilities make the west coast of Ceará a mandatory destination for those visiting the state, be it for a backpacking trip through the region, or just to enjoy a relaxing holiday and watch the sunset.
Flecheiras
Located 130km from Fortaleza, Flecheiras Beach is an ideal place if you are looking for beauty and contact with nature. Considered as one of the least explored places of Ceará, the beach is surrounded by white sand dunes and palm trees, reinforcing the sense of tranquillity. The beach is in fact a cove, so the hotels are close to the sea and even offer bar service to guests on the sand. The long thin strip of sand is also an attraction and is suitable for walking and playing sport. One of Flecheiras attractions is the reefs that have helped form natural pools and are great for snorkelling. If you want a little more adventure then it is possible to go open water
diving. Rafts, with capacity for up to five people, lead to a coral bank, which is 500m from the coast. Strong winds in the area are also favourable to wind and kite surfing. Anyone visiting Flecheiras cannot fail to visit the beaches of Mandaú and Guajiru, which have beautiful natural scenery with a river and sea. You can also take a catamaran trip along the Mandaú River. With regard to the cuisine, the region is rich in gastronomy. The highlight is the seafood, present on the menus of dozens of restaurants and in some hotels. Depending on the restaurant, it is possible to eat a freshly caught fish. Setur-CE

Icaraí de Amontada Natural pools, beautiful coves and crystal clear sea on a coast that stretches for 24km. This is the setting that introduces Icaraí de Amontada to tourists as one of the most idyllic destinations in Ceara. It is located 220km from Fortaleza and until recently was unknown to the public, which helped to preserve the quiet fishing village’s appearance. The destination now has a more intense movement because of its strong winds, which attracts kite surfing lovers. Venturing to the dunes at the Sabiaguaba Lagoon and Lençóis Cearenses, the ponds here fill up in the rainy season (February to May). A tour of the area may also include the village of Setur-CE

Caetanos, which offers more community-based tourism, hosting tourists worldwide in fishermen’s houses and integrating them to the cultural life of the region. One of the prominent places is on the Moitas beach, the busiest in the region. Located 6 km from the village, the site concentrates most of the seaside gazebos and from there you can access the port on the Aracatiaçu River. For those interested, you can take a boat ride along the river to see the mangroves. A regular stop is a stall where fresh oysters are served.
Camocim
Considered as one of the most beautiful cities in Ceará, Camocim is also the largest along the state’s coast, with 62km of beaches. The destination has many leisure options due to its many natural attractions. Besides the beaches, the region is still home to lakes, ponds, dunes, cliffs, mangroves and coconut groves. The cuisine, which is heavily seafood based, is one of the great attractions of the region. As well as other destinations on the west coast of Ceará, the strong winds of the region also favour sports, such as sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Among the three most popular attractions in Camocim are: the Island of Love, the Tatajuba Beach and Barreiras Beach.
Testa Branca Island (Island of Love) A The Testa Branca (White Forehead) Island, better known as the Island of Love is one of the most famous destinations for those visiting Camocim. Recently considered a ‘Public Good’ of Ceará, the area has mangroves, dunes and beaches, and is visited by people crossing the river Coreaú by boat to enjoy swimming, hiking and skiing on the dunes. From the Island you can see the beautiful scenery of coconut trees, moored boats and houses by the sea, all contrasting with the blue sky as it is always sunny.
On the beach tourists can enjoy crabs and other seafood.
Barrinha Beach Located in a private area, 21km from Camocim, Barrinha Beach has a population of only 23 fishermen who inhabit the region with a vast existing area of coconut trees. The name “Barrinha” is derived from the existing reddish barriers (sand) on the beach. The formation gives a special tone to the area, mixing white and red sand and generating an incredible view for its visitors.
Tatajuba Beach On the border between Camocim and Jericoacoara is one of the most beautiful tropical paradises in the northeast, the Tatajuba Beach. Surrounded by white dunes, coconut trees and vast mangroves, the beach is part of a large area of environmental preservation. Here you will find Morro Branco, one of the highest dunes of Ceará. The beach area has 745 residents and 166 houses, divided between the villages of São Francisco, Vila Nova and Nova Tatajuba. From Camocim the route to Tatajuba can be done by sea, crossing the river Coreaú.

Considered one of the world’s most beautiful places, the city of Jijoca of Jericoacoara has attractions ranging from romantic settings to attractions geared for water sport lovers. Located 30km from Fortaleza, the region immediately brings you to your senses, due to the beauty and simplicity of the place. The beach has about 130 lodging facilities, ranging from simple guesthouses to five-star hotels, as well as pharmacies, grocery stores and other commercial ventures that meet most of the needs of tourists. Merging daylight activities with nightspots, the city has excellent dining options, such as Mediterranean cuisine, pizza, regional cuisine, French, Italian, Indian-Vegetarian, Japanese, as well as cafes, creperie and handmade ice cream. Access can be achieved by car and bus. By the end of this year, those who decide to visit Jeri can also fly. The airport construction is being completed, which will decrease travel time from around four hours (by car) to about an hour.

Mangue Seco Located in a small village amidst the dunes, Mague Seco gains attention for its biodiversity. The area has a population of seahorses and other species. The Guriú and Mangue Seco communities live in this almost untouched paradise and to help preserve it they periodically receive information on the importance of preserving the natural wealth that they possess through the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
Paradise Lagoon and Blue Lagoon
One of the most popular postcard views of Jericoacoara, the Pedra Furada (Holed Stone) is a large arch carved by the motion of the waves, located in the rocky region of Jericoacoara. The beach strip begins after the Malhada Beach, the first at the east of the village, out of the cove. The Rock Region stretches for about 2km of coastline, ending at Frade Stone. Once a year, the sun and the hole align creating a true spectacle!
Considered as two of the main attractions of Jericoacoara, the lagoons have crystal clear waters and hammocks that allow the tourists to lay in the water, becoming the most visited places of the city. They have excellent facilities, including toilets, fresh water showers, beach gazebos, guesthouses and restaurants.
Sunset Dune
Serrote
An obligatory stop for those visiting the city, the Por do Sol (Sunset) Dune is close to the town centre and provides one of the most spectacular views of the sunset. The dune is appreciated daily by dozens of people, including tourists and locals.
Formed by two small hills, Serrote is one of the few in Jericoacoara, which has an extensive green area. The hill is responsible for protecting the village from strong winds and sand from dunes. If you put Serrote on your itinerary you can enjoy a beautiful view, and a good walk.

Natal

Natal is well known as the city of sun, warm water, dunes and palm trees and has even received the title of having the Purest Air in South America by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The State capital of Rio Grande do Norte has one of the most beautiful coastlines in Brazil, which stretches for over 400km, as well as having hospitable locals that welcome tourists with open arms. These are some of the features of one of the main Sun & Sand destinations of the country. Among the unmissable tours is a visit to the largest cashew tree in the world and to see more than 20 beaches with paradisiacal landscapes of dunes and clear, calm seas. You also can’t afford to miss trying one of the most common dishes in the destination, the local shrimp. Deep in Natal’s history there are traces of Dutch and Portuguese colonization and it was a military base in the 2nd World War. The city also houses the second largest urban forest park in Brazil, The Dunes are the main feature of Natal
Dunes Park (Parque das Dunas), whilst also retaining the charm of a medium-sized city, offering comfort and safety to its visitors. Ponta Negra is the most popular beach in the city, it is good for swimming, has good hotel infrastructure with restaurants and a busy nightlife. Here you will find the famous Morro do Careca - a dune more than 100m high. It is currently closed to visitors for preservation purposes, but even from a distance, it is worth taking a photo. In the state capital Natal, there are several other attractions such as the Fortress of the Three Wise Men (Fortaleza dos Reis Magos), the initial landmark of the city - founded on December 25, 1599 and built in a star shape by the Portuguese colonizers. To get to know a bit of the popular culture, a visit to the historic centre, including the Alberto Maranhão Theatre, Cascudo Museum, Solar Bela Vista and Old Cathedral, is well worth it.

Pipa When visiting Natal, you will have the impression of being in paradise and words will not be able to describe all the gems on the famous Pipa Beach, in the city of Tibau do Sul, 85km from the state capital. Ecological diversity, almost deserted beaches frequented by dolphins and turtles, and a landscape made of dunes, cliffs and natural pools are just some of the attractions that can be found there. It is also perfect for surfing, buggy rides, boat trips and even horseback riding. The gastronomy, embroidery and crafts made with sisal, straw and clay are other highlights. Pipa was a popular place for hippies and surfers in the 1970s and became the favourite place for foreigners in the state, some even moving here. The area is primarily a haven of lush nature with unspoilt beaches, cliffs and rainforest reserves. The evening are busier due to the many bars and restaurants, several nightclubs and events such as gastronomic and music festivals. To survive a night in Pipa, you will need plenty of energy as the party lasts until sun rise. And the best thing about Pipa is that it is frequented by young people from around the world who enjoy the regional forrรณ as well as the techno music beats. In addition to Pipa, there are other beaches located in the city of Tibau do Sul, such as Cacimbinha, Madeiro Beach - considered the most beautiful - and Amor (Love) Beach. They form a set of variations to suit all tastes and styles. Afogados Beach is the point for surfing, with big waves, long sandy stretches, funky crowds, craftsmen and more. The observation deck that stands on its cliff adds an extra component to this trip through its nature. Amor Beach is the most famous beach in Pipa

São Miguel do Gostoso Further north in the state, 110km from the state capital, is São Miguel do Gostoso, a paradise for sailors and wind and kite surfers. A curious sign at the entrance to the city reads “here we make it tasty”, which welcomes visitors to this quaint beach town that gained fame in the late 1990s and is now one of the main destinations for water sport lovers. Gostoso is exactly right at the “corner of the continent”, where it is said “the wind makes the curve” and that’s why the beaches, with small waves and strong winds for the entire year, have become a paradise for water sports lovers. The small fishing village is simple and easy and attracts tourists all year round.

You must visit São Miguel do Gostoso on foot, take a stroll along the beach or down its small streets, some cobbled, some unpaved and others of gravel. If do not want to walk much, you can opt for motorcycle taxis or rent a bicycle. The short distances and the calmness of the streets make them easy to ride. Gostoso livens up when hosting events such as the Film Festival and the Jazz & Bossa Fest, It can also be quiet for those who prefer the peacefulness of nature. The Ponta do Santo Cristo Cove, the beaches of Xepa and Maceió are virtually uninhabited all year round, making the destination an ideal place for those seeking tranquillity and to have close contact with nature.

Galinhos Dunes, salt marshes, mangroves and, of course, beaches. These are some of the attractions that Galinhos - 166km from Natal - keeps for its tourists. The city takes its name from the large amount of dories (fish) in the waters of the region. In Portuguese, they are called peixe-galo which literally means fish-cockerel and Galinhos means “little cockerels”. With deserted beaches and unspoilt landscapes, the city has been emerging as a new tourist destination for those not just seeking sun and sand, but also piece and quiet. The most famous place in Galinhos is Farol (Lighthouse) Beach, which takes its name precisely because it is home to the Galinhos Lighthouse. At Capim Beach, due to the high salinity of the water,
it is possible to float. It is worthwhile experience that is hard to find at other beaches. Curiously, it also houses a wind farm. If you are lucky, you may come across this beautiful rare specie, the blue heron, which is common in this region. Among the most popular rides are the boat and buggy ones. Out at sea, it is possible to enjoy the clear water, but what really draw the visitor’s attention are the mangroves that are present in much of this region. It is a habitat for crabs and oysters. All this turns into a multi-coloured and unique setting when it meets the vegetation that is visited by white and blue herons; a true spectacle of nature. Foto: Ana Muller

Adventure Tourism Rio Grande do Norte is also famous for adventure sports. One of the highlights is undoubtedly the city of Patu, which has become known worldwide for practicing free flight, with several paragliding world records being broken here. The destination has one of the best conditions in the world for this sport and, each year, pilots from all over the world come to Patu in an attempt to get into the record books. The flying season is between the months of October and December. With your feet firmly on the ground, one highlight is the buggy ride, a real Rio Grande do Norte tradition. One of the routes is in Jenipabu and the feeling you get from going down the sand dunes at high speed is a unique experience. Seeing the beautiful landscapes of the state amid the sand that rises with the vehicle’s movement is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Rio Grande do Norte. In the water, a good tip is Barra do Cunhaú, where you can kitesurf and windesurf. Located about 80km from Natal, it has an extensive stretch of sand and, most importantly, calm waters. The same thing happens here as in São Miguel do Gostoso, which has constant wind and is considered one of the best places for these two sports in the world.
Patu has the best conditions in the world for free flight
A little more radical are climbing and rappelling in Serra Caiada, located approximately 70km from Natal. Experts rate the area as ideal for this kind of sport because of the geological formations. The hills are almost natural monuments due to their beauty. At a height of 285m, it is considered one of the oldest rock formations in South America, with its age thought to be about 3.4 billion years. And speaking of a very distant past, it’s worth visiting the areas that have preserved caves and cave paintings. In Apodi, there is the Archaeological and Paleontological Site of Lajedo de Soledade, with adjoining caves. In addition to the paintings - representing mainly macaws, parrots, herons, lizards and geometric shapes - you can still find fossils of some animals here. The other three sites that make up geosites of Geopark Seridó are Xiquexique in Carnaúba dos Dantas; Mirador, in Parelhas; and Carnaúba River, in Acari. Finally, for those who prefer walking amid nature, a good tip is a walk through the Serra de São Bento, just over 100km from Natal. There are several possible trails. Among the highlights are the Pedra da Mata, Tanque do Boi (recommended for beginners) and the Pedra do Cruzeiro, a little harder, but the beautiful view is worth it.

Religious Tourism October 3rd, a state holiday in Rio Grande do Norte, is dedicated to the martyrs of Cunhaú and Uruaçu. Residents of these two mills were the first Brazilians massacred on behalf of the Catholic faith, even during the Dutch colonial period. The monument in honour to the martyrs, in the metropolitan region of Natal, has become a tourist attraction and place of pilgrimage. The capital of Rio Grande do Norte’s anniversary celebrations go beyond religious festivals, which, by coinciding with ones in Natal, attract many visitors. The seasons of concerts and outdoor performances are interspersed with the patron saint festivities, Our Lady of the Presentation, Santos Reis, San Sebastian and Our Lady of the Navigators; all have a strong appeal for religious tourism. In the countryside, there are also great religious events throughout the year, starting with pilgrimages to Monte do Galo, in Carnaúba dos Dantas. July, in the Seridó region, is also known as
the month of Saint Anne, with festivals, especially in Caicó and Currais Novos. Musical performances, food and craft fairs draw crowds who have religious motivations. In Mossoro, the month of December is dedicated to the festivities in honour of the patron saint Santa Luzia. Santa Cruz is a university town, located 115km from Natal, in Polo Trairi, which became a compulsory tourist destination with the construction of the Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia. The statue of Santa Rita is 56m high, it is considered the largest Catholic monument, which makes it higher than the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro or the Statue of Liberty in the United States. The Alto de Santa Rita, a religious tourist complex, has a chapel, a room of miracles, auditorium, craft shops, event areas, cafeteria, bathrooms and parking. The statue of Saint Rita of Cascia will soon receive an extra boost with the construction of a cable car to Alto de Santa Rita. Foto: Canindé Soares

A setting that captivates and surprises visitors
L
ocated in the southern region of Brazil, with easy access to the main state capitals of the country, either by road or air, the state of Santa Catarina is a pleasant surprise for European and South American tourists. Here, you will find yourself in a setting that captivates through its great diversity of attractions, gastronomy and services and a visit here is perfect at any time of the year.

If you are looking for sun and sea, Santa Catarina has some of the best beaches in the country. The coast of Santa Catarina is 561km long. From the capital Florianópolis, with its beautiful beaches, to the region called Verde Mar Coast, where ten cities with tourist amenities and attractions are located. Ideal settings for nautical sports such as surfing, windfsurfing, kitesurfing and stand up paddle attract more than 1,5 million Argentinean and other tourists annually during the summer season, between December and March. But besides the product Sun & Sand, the state of Santa Catarina – known for its preservation of the environment - offers Nature Tourism. With this in mind, we must highlight whale watching along its coast. From June to November, a spectacular phenomenon occurs. Hundreds of right whales leave the cold waters of Patagonia and come to the south coast of Santa Catarina to give birth and breastfeed their young. Tourism agencies take groups of tourists to stroll along the coast in order to spot this phenomenon.

Bird watching, exploring the mountain region’s canyons and visiting wineries are part of Rural Tourism activities. These are ideal tours for winter holidays, between June and August. It should be noted that many of the traditions cultivated since Azorean, Germanic and Italian migration are still present in its rich gastronomy, with colours and spices; the culture, with typical festivals; and in the architecture, with a half-timbered style. These are some of the fruits left from the heritage of immigrant families from Germany who landed here and colonized the state more than a century ago. The state also offers theme parks such as Beto Carrero World, in the city of Penha, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary with some special events; Unipraias, in Balneário Camboriú, with many leisure areas for families. If you are looking to cultivate a dream of coming to Brazil or visiting again, Santa Catarina is a must stop for its diversity of attractions on the Tourism Experience journey.

Florianópolis, gateway for international tourists
T
he main entrance gate for international tourists in he state is Florianópolis. The capital of Santa Catarina relies on a series of beaches that range from the most well-known ones like Jurerê, Jurerê International, Joaquina, Ingleses until the less known or more private ones like Forte, Lagoinha, Moçambique, Brava, Ribeirão da Ilha, Naufragados and Armação, and they all have their own characteristics. With a population of more than 450,000, Floripa, as it is known by the locals, boasts a list of attractions that include the Municipal Market, good restaurants, tourist-type hotels and a busy social life with bars and nightclubs. If you have time, you should include a tour to Lagoa da Conceição. The small town of Centrinho da Lagoa (Centre of Lagoa) has countless restaurants that serve the famous “shrimp sequence” (shrimps are served in different ways: breaded, grilled, boiled, etc). During the summer season the highlights of Floripa are the 42 beaches that come in various shapes and sizes. The beach of Jurerê has long and calm waves, fine pale yellow sand and warm and pleasant waters. A small road separates it from Forte Beach. Here it is more peaceful, with a unique landscape and warm waters. As it is an oyster and shellfish-farming region, the seafood arrives fresh at the restaurants. At the northern end of the island, Lagoinha is a small beach characterised by a cove, where its shores protect it. There is a traditional colony of fishermen and a stunning view. It is ideal for those looking for peace and quiet and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main beaches. The most extensive beach is Moçambique, which has 8.5km of clear and soft sand that guarantees unspoilt natural beauty. It is part of the Rio Vermelho Forest Park, a reserve of approximately 400,000m2. There are no buildings here or on the road. Due to its tranquillity and good waves,
the beach is one of the main points for surfers. Clear waters, beautiful people on the sand, music, events and an active community, this is the universe that encompasses Brava Beach, which is highlighted by good amenities, and of course, the privileged view. Next to Brava Beach is Joaquina Beach or Joaca, as it is nicknamed by the locals. Known for its perfect, often icy, waves, Joaquina is the favourite place for many surfers and even hosts national and even world championships. Located in the Baía Sul (South Bay), Ribeirão da Ilha’s waters are calm but a little deep and is an exception to the rule of the beaches of the South. The sand is also thick and dark. On the waterfront, the architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries catches the eye and adds special charm to this little piece of paradise. Just 25km from the centre of Florianópolis, Armação Beach still maintains a small village atmosphere. It is one of the main fishing villages on the island. Together with Campeche and Pântano do Sul, they form the largest fishing complex in the city. Ingleses beach has 5km of blue water with medium sized waves and good infrastructure. In the summer the waves are smaller to the left. On its dunes, sandboarding is possible, where you can ride down on a wooden plank. The local population maintains the tradition of the Azorean colonizers and, in the winter, when it is less busy, they go fishing. It is located 35km from the city centre. Canasvieiras beach is one of the most popular for tourists. It’s a little over 2km long andbrings together natural beauty and complete infrastructure. It has few waves and is frequented by families and is 27km from the city centre. March 2017 l Berlin l ITB | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | 23

magine a diverse trip with unique attractions that can seduce the most demanding of tourists. The region Verde Mar Coast is comprised of ten cities such as Porto Belo, Camboriú and Piçarras, in addition to the cities of Itajaí, Itapema, Navegantes and Luiz Alves. The tourist towns of Penha, Bombinhas and Ilhota are also included on this circuit. Each one has its own characteristics and diverse attractions. Balneário Camboriú – This favourite seaside resort for Argentineans transforms during the summer into a “neighbourhood” of Buenos Aires as they crowd the city. During the day, a good tip is to enjoy Central beach, which is 8.5km in length, or even venture to the most distant ones, or take a trip out on a schooner to sail through the bays and coves. Close by is a place that always arouses curiosity, Pinho Beach. It is a nudist beach used only by naturists. During the night, the bars and restaurants of Atlântica Avenue are popular for a busy night out. Balneário Camboriú is home to ten beaches and offers options for all tastes. Families enjoy the South, especially Laranjeiras Beach, with its calm waters and good infrastructure. On the same road, a good tip is Estaleirinho. Access to the beaches in the South is made via the Interpraias Highway, which is a beautiful 16km panoramic road. Access is also possible by the cable car that connects the beaches to the centre. In the low season, it is one of the favourite tours for senior citizen groups. Bombinhas – The beach was named after the noise made when walking on sand rich in quartz crystals, causing a small cracking noise as if there were small bombs. Bombinhas is one of the most popular beaches in the state. It relies on its good tourist infrastructure, with its hotels, restaurants and shops, besides the traditional nautical sports. The region is known as the capital of ecological diving. With a total of 16 beaches

(Atalaia, Bombas, Bombinhas, Canto Grande, Cardoso, Conceição, Embrulho, Galheta, Lagoa, Lagoinha, Mariscal, Quatro Ilhas, Retiro dos Padres, Ribeiro, Sepultura, Zimbros and Prainha), it hides one of the most fascinating underwater settings in the world, with coral reefs and the remains of ship wrecks such as the LILI freighter (1957). For the radicals among us, in the summer it is common to see hang gliding and paragliders take off from Macaco Hill. Trails, mountain biking, horseback riding, crafts shopping, fishing and visits to museums are other all year round activities. Porto Belo - One of the main berths on the Brazilian coast, Porto Belo is an island, of the same name, that attracts through its beauty. The island draws attention with the preserved nature amid the convenience of the infrastructure offered to visitors. The ecological trail of “Pedra da Cruz” is an ideal tour to get to know the area. The high point of the guided tour is the numerous curiosities and legends told by the tour guides, related to the history of the island’s occupation. Diving is also a highlight on the island of Porto Belo. In some points it is possible to observe an innumerate number of different species. Kayaking, water skiing, zip lining, boat rides, banana boats and the “crazy disc” are other options. Penha and Navegantes - The 6km long beach of Armação, in Penha, appeals to tourists due to its clear and transparent waters. It is one of the noble beaches in the area due to the high property prices in the area. Also, the Beach of São Miguel has calm sea, ideal for swimming and good for families with children. Surfers, on the other hand, prefer Grande Beach. From here you can see the Lighthouse at Ponta da Vigia, as well as watching the fishermen coming and going along the coast, with their fishing gear or just picking clams on the rocks. Navegantes has an airport with regular flights from Rio de
Piçarras - Located on the north coast of Santa Catarina, the area is privileged to have one of the most beautiful seacoasts in the state, with 7km of calm beaches and two islands (Feia and Itacolomi). The city’s main tourist attractions are its natural resources, with special attention given to its waters. The beach is considered one of the cleanest in the state. Due to its calm waters, it is an excellent option for the whole family. Itapema - With a calm and crystalline sea, Itapema Beach divides its area between big hotels, bars and restaurants. Meanwhile, the bigger and better known Meia Praia is frequented by tourists and is a popular and busy beach. If you prefer a quieter area, then a good tip is the Costão beach or Canto da Praia. Walking on the rocks of Costão and admiring the seafront is highly recommended. Itajaí – The neighbour of Balneário de Camboriú, Itajaí has become famous for its port. The city is now investing in a new marina to improve its infrastructure. On a tour of the beaches, do not forget to visit Brava beach, one of the most popular in the state for surfing. Brava, by the way, is the stronghold of the young crowd, who arrive in search of excitement and amusement. In Cabeçudas, take a walk around and enjoy the beautiful colonial mansions. To enjoy a more peaceful environment, head to the beaches of Morcego, between Brava and Cabeçudas, and Atalaia, where you will find good waves and is frequented by local surfers. It is worth mentioning Mercado Velho, with its cafes and craft and spices shops, which is right next to the Fish Market. Governador Celso Ramos - Stretch the trip and take a tour at Governador Celso Ramos. The region occupies a beautiful peninsula, which nature has unpredictably cut to divide the coast into 23 beautiful beaches suitable for diving, windsurfing, jet skiing and surfing. Some offer good infrastructure like the beach of Palmas and others are completely deserted, like Ilheus and Bananeiras. The region also integrates the biological reserve of Marinha do Arvoredo. The island of Anhatomirim, a popular tourist spot, is home to fortresses such as Santa Cruz, built during the Portuguese colonization. Here you will find luxury lodges and resorts such as the Ponta dos Ganchos Resort that welcomes celebrities and personalities.

ut it is not just beach and sun that attract tourists to Santa Catarina’s coast. Every day the volume of people interested in enjoying the spectacle of the right whales grows daily and takes place every year. The Right Whale season lasts from July to November, when they arrive at Rosa Beach to give birth and breastfeed their young, a wonderful spectacle of nature. Rosa Bay is a perfect place for it, with waters protected from the ocean currents and climate and geography that help whales and onlookers. Visitors can see the giant mammals from clifftops, the trails, from the hotels with beach views and even during surfing. According to data from the Right Whale Institute, the city of Imbituba is the city where the largest number of whales is recorded per season. According to studies, about 70 whales are spotted in the county during that period. Numerous beaches allow you to spot the right whales up close and you won’t even need binoculars. favourable. Beaches with shores protected from the winds and inlets are the favourite of these animals. Some, just after the surf, are so close to the beach that you cannot fail to be impressed. Imbituba, Ibiraquera and Laguna are the most suitable places to watch them. It has certainly been a unique experience in the so-called nautical tourism of Santa Catarina. Rosa Beach is recognized by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It is reminiscent of an old fishing village and has a special charm. Located 22km from the centre of Imbituba and 18km from Garopaba, Rosa is bordered by Vermelha Beach to the North and Portinho Beach to the South. The destination was discovered by surfers in the 70’s and today is one of the main points for the practice of the sport, especially in the South, on the Da Vila Beach. The region also has the Ibiraquera Lake, which is one of the best places to practice windsurfing in Brazil because
it has the best winds for it. Ibiraquera Beach is considered as one of the best beaches for stand up paddle, kitesurfing and also windsurfing in Brazil. The scenery consists of dunes, rivers, islands and lagoons. Each year, in October, the world’s windsurfing and kitesurfing elite gather on the sands of Ibiraquera for the most expected Latin American wave sailing competition, the Ibiraquera Wave Contest. Another place that arouses interest is Garopaba. Located in a cove, in the urban centre, the beach of Garopaba has dunes and a calm sea, which is great for water sports. The landscape captivates not only visitors, but also the locals, who are dazzled by the contrast of the sea next to the fishermen’s huts with their colourful boats. The dunes of Ouvidor and Siriú also do not go unnoticed. The mountains of fine yellow sand reflect the sunlight, and are very inviting for photos and walks. To avoid the heat, a good tip is to go swimming at Siriú Beach.

Embratur
Germany, a priority market for Brazil In 2016, Brazil bea t its record f or international tourists and recorded 6.6 million visitors. Germany ranks sixth among all the countries and second among European countries. Last year, more than 220,000 Germans travelled to Brazilian destinations. Germany is behind only France, with more than 250,000 tourists visiting Brazil, followed by Italy, with just over 200,000 tourists. The president of the Brazilian Tourist Board - EMBRATUR, Vinícius Lummertz, highlights the importance of this market and confirms that during the ITB edition he has scheduled business meetings with the goal of gaining new partnerships. “I can guarantee that EMBRATUR wants more and knows the Brazilian potential of attracting more Germans to Brazil. The investment work of the Institute goes through several promotional actions in this country such as the participation in this ITB Berlin, focusing on the segments of multi-products and LGBT”, he said. Lummertz reminds German tourists that they have good reason to put Brazil on their travel itinerary: “Among them I mention for example the favourable exchange rate and the chance of knowing the best sun and sand destinations, Leisure, Ecotourism, among others, as well as a different and welcoming culture that the country offers”. EMBRATUR estimates that around R$330 million should be generated for the Brazilian economy until 2025, only with the actions carried out by the Support Program for the Capture and Promotion of International Events. Last year, the entity carried out 31 actions, which resulted in t here being an estimated 26 thousand people who will attend meetings in Brazil by 2025. This will make the revenue generation of R$193 million possible. Also in 2016, EMBRATUR supported the promotion of 14 events that will bring more than 18 thousand foreigners to the country by 2019, with the possibility of generating another R$143 million. More resources and a change in the management model The president of EMBRATUR explained that in 2016 the entity supported only events of associative entities and this amount will increase with the work of the Institute this year. “Starting this year, EMBRATUR intends to expand this investment, supporting the entire corporate and incentive tourism sector, 30 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
Vinicius Lummertz, president of Embratur thereby increasing the number of foreign visitors coming to Brazil on business, as well as the financial movement in the country”, he remarked. Lummertz also recalled that Brazil gained greater visibility after the World Cup in 2014 and the Rio 2016 Olympics and that this is the time to capture new events. “According to ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), São Paulo is the main destination in this segment. Another 58 cities also hosted international events in 2015, but we know that our range of options is more extensive”, he added. In 2016, 22 international events were held in Brazil, which began being captured by EMBRATUR in 2009, and guaranteed the presence of approximately 25,000 people. Regarding the proposal to transform EMBRATUR into a regulatory agancy with a goal of gaining greater agility and establishing partnerships. “We need to urgently change EMBRATUR ‘s working model and turning it into an agency. Thus, we will have the power to establish partnerships and improve our performance in international fairs”, he said. According to Lummertz, the decision is in the hands of President Temer. In January the proposal for change was submitted to him and we are now awaiting his approval. In April of this year EMBRATUR invited the president
of UNWTO (World Tourism Organization), Taleb Rifai, to a meeting with the president to propose an open letter of commitment to Tourism. The idea is that the new model could be implemented later this year. Another EMBRATUR priority is the use of new technologies through the Visit Brazil website, as a way of promoting states and cities with tourism potential to international tourists located in countries that send most visitors to Brazil in Europe, Asia and Latin America, as well as the North American market. For Lummertz, Brazilian tourism still has a long way to go and challenges to be overcome. “The main focus has been boosting the tourist flow in Brazil and seeking more international investment for the sector, in line with the projects that the government intends to follow. EMBRATUR’s efforts are also to optimize the resources of the promotion actions abroad, through partnerships such as private initiatives and approximation to national trade. We want to unlock obstacles of bureaucracy in the creation of marinas and tourist ports and give greater attention to natural parks, theme parks, resorts and cruises. This set of measures will transform the potential of places into effective tourist attractions and permanent destinations for foreign tourists”, Lummertz concludes.
Ministry of Tourism
Ministry of Tourism plans to increase promotion of Brazil abroad The revenue generated by foreigners on trips to Brazil, increased from US$5.8 billion in 2015 to US$6 billion in 2016, a growth of 3%. The rise occurred during Olympic year, where Rio de Janeiro hosted the games, attracting tourists from around the world. The intention of the Ministry of Tourism (MTur) is to increase the promotional actions to grow the volume of foreign tourists visiting the country, from the current 6.6 million to 12 million in the next seven years. According to the minister, Marx Beltrão, the strategy is to foment the country’s promotional actions abroad, as well as seeking new international flights. In 2016, Brazil had only US$16 million for promotion abroad. According to the minister, Marx Beltrão, this amount is not sufficient to present the Brazilian tourist potential to the main international destinations. “Our idea is to support public-private partnerships and move forward with the idea of transforming EMBRATUR into a regulatory agency so that it can obtain more resources and agility in its decisions. There is already a study about it and we are just waiting for the endorsement of President Michel Temer to approve the change”, he said. Beltrão added that it was a matter of honour to place Tourism on the Government’s priority agenda. Recently he also defended a program of diffusion and promotion of cities like Rio de Janeiro, with support of the Ministry of Tourism and EMBRATUR. At the same time, he recalled that a greater effort is needed to ensure greater security for residents and tourists visiting the Marvellous City: “Rio de Janeiro is the main showcase of Brazilian tourism and we need to promote the city more in Brazil and especially abroad. We have been talking to the authorities about having a bigger police force in tourist areas.” If it depends on word of mouth, Brazil has everything to gain in the global travel market. Out of the international visitors who came to the country, about 95% intend to return. “But only the recommendation of people is not enough. We need to intensify international promotion”, argued Marx. The estimate by MTur is that 1.1 million tourists come during Carnival and that the country has received, this last summer season, a volume of over 2.5 million foreign tourists.
Ecotourism and greater facilities for international tourism Marx Beltrão highlighted the country’s great potential for ecotourism and nature tourism, considered as one of the main assets to move the travel industry forward in Brazil. He pointed out that although the country is considered as the number one natural attraction, the national parks sector receives only 7.1 million visitors generating US$16 million, while the US, third place, receives 307 million people and generates US$17 billion. “Brazil is perhaps the country with the greatest difference between the potential and the accomplished. The government is attentive and, to better take advantage of this differential, is making concessions for the orderly use of national and state parks”, he commented. The Ministry of Tourism has also invested in
training staff to attract more tourists, so much so that this year the International Tourism and Hospitality Qualification Program will select 120 students from technical and undergraduate courses from public institutions for a training course of up to three months in the UK. MTur is investing R$5 million in the program. In this first half of the year, the minister is working on developing a package of measures to reduce the bureaucracy of the sector and, consequently, attract more tourists and generate more jobs and income for the country, especially in sectors such as marine and nautical tourism in order to attract new investment to the sector. Marx Beltrão also defends the legalization of casinos and the increase of international capital in the airlines, currently restricted to 20%, as a way to increase competitiveness and reduce the price of airfares.

Aviation
How to get there Despite the distance, it is now extremely easy to get to Brazil. There are large and diverse flight opportunities, either direct or with stopovers, which enable a trip to the country from Germany. One of the main companies linking the two countries is Lufthansa, Germany’s largest airline. Currently, the carrier maintains daily operations between Frankfurt/FRA and São Paulo/GRU (LH506/507) and between Frankfurt/FRA and Rio de Janeiro/ GIG (LH500/501). Both flights are operated using the iconic Boeing B747-800. Another company that also has daily services between Brazil and Germany is Latam Brasil, through its JJ8070/8071 flights, currently operated using B777-300ERs. This totals three daily flights between two Brazilian cities and Germany. Another good and comfortable opportunity is to fly with the beloved Tap Portugal, which has had strong ties with Brazil for decades. It offers the opportunity to embark on a much wider range of Brazilian destinations, although a mandatory stop is required in Lisbon. Tap is currently the airline with the best connections between Brazil and Europe and has 70 weekly flights departing from ten Brazilian cities - Belém, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo - to Lisbon and/or Porto. A smaller but not less important company is Condor, also German. The company transports passengers between Brazil and Frankfurt weekly from Recife and Fortaleza, with two weekly flights (Tuesdays and Sundays). Finally, there are several other flight opportunities, also with stopovers, to reach Brazil through Air Europa, Alitalia, Air France and British Airways, among others, with connections in their hubs.

Gunga Beach, and the entire Alagoas coast, impresses through the colour of its waters
Alagoas Beauties in the midst of the multi-coloured Brazilian Caribbean
I
f you are preparing your passport for a trip to the Caribbean in Central America, you will probably have one eye on the exchange rate and another one on a yellow fever vaccine. If you didn’t already know, the same crystalline turquoise waters, bright sun and comfortable large resorts and hotels are also present in Brazil. We are talking about Alagoas, which has touristic and warm beautiful beaches as its main economic activity. Like Rio Grande do Norte, it is a state that impresses its tourists the most by the quality of its transparent waters and organized beaches. The city of Maceió also follows this sea of opportunity. The capital of Alagoas State is one of the main tourist destinations in the Northeast. In addition to the important historical heritage and cultural opportunities, it has excellent infrastructure along the seafront and Maceió boasts some of the best urban beaches in Brazil, such as Ponta Verde, Pajuçara, Paripuera, Jatiúca and Francês. The beaches of Alagoas are really charming. If you know anyone who has had the opportunity to visit them, then they will know what we are talking about. The state’s coastline has
36 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
beaches from north to south, with natural pools, coconut trees, warm waters and many resorts. On the north coast there is the environmental protection area of the Coast of the Corals. And it’s in the north that you will find Maragogi, a coastal city strategically located between Maceió and Recife, 125 kilometres equidistant between both state capitals. In addition to the wonderful natural pools and paradisiacal beaches, Maragogi offers many other attractions that will make your trip an unforgettable stay: diving in the largest Marine Environmental Protection Area (APA) in Brazil, mouth watering seafood, manioc biscuit - an unrivalled flavour, typical and authentic craftsmanship and hotels for all tastes and budgets. But there is not only the north coast. If you do not want to leave the big city or take a road trip, the capital of Alagoas reserves about 40 kilometres of coastline and 22 lagoons and canals. It is a city that arouses passion for natural, cultural and historical beauties, with beautiful sea that oscillates between blue and green and with natural pools only 2 kilometres from the coast. These beaches are framed by coconut trees. Surroundings - The state receives more than 1.5 million
national and international tourists a year that visit not only the state capital but also its surroundings. A series of spectacularly deserted beaches, which are accessible by a coconut tree framed road - in the case of São Miguel dos Milagres – are located in simple villages that house charming Guest Houses. In the opposite direction are Barra de São Miguel and Penedo, a bucolic historic town on the banks of the São Francisco River. From here it is easy to go to the mouth of the river to enjoy the meeting of its waters with the sea, which are surrounded by immense golden dunes. Still on the North Coast is Paripueira where you will find sandbanks 2 kilometres from the beach that help form natural pools, accessible by speedboats and rafts at low tide. Boats depart from here to the isolated beach of Carro Quebrado, in Barra de Santo Antônio, cut by cliffs of different shades. South Coast - The southern coast of Alagoas also has its peculiarities. Francês Beach is a famous point for surfers, swimmers and extreme sports lovers. It is worth remembering that a barrier reef, which makes for calm waters, whilst protecting the beach and making it wonderful for children, stand-up paddling and snorkelling. Where the barrier reef ends, the sea become rougher, making it suitable for surfing. Located 20 kilometres from the big city, Francês Beach also has many amenities like restaurants, bars and loungers that will prolong your stay there. Another point on the south coast of Alagoas is Gunga Beach, which is located in the city of Barra de São Miguel. It is another beach that deserves a visit because it is relatively close to Maceió (33 kilometres away) and is also a ‘must go’ to beach. Gunga can be reached by boat or even by car and it is truly worth it. Coconut palms, open seas, white sand and colourful cliffs can be explored by classic buggy rides. In addition to the magnificent landscape, Gunga offers natural pools, leisure facilities (rental of nautical equipment), bars, restaurants and craft shops.

Bahia State of permanent joy and beautiful landscapes
“I
’m from Bahia, because I’m Brazilian, I’m from the coast, I’m from the whole world, I’m from Carnival.” Nothing could better sum up what it means to be from Bahia than the chorus from a song by Jammil e Uma Noites, which ended up becoming a hit in the not too distant past here in Brazil. The singer Jammil was correct: everybody from Bahia is from the coast. This state is full of tourist opportunities and is a specialist in Sun & Sand, as we can see below. Starting with the state capital itself, the city of Salvador. The beaches may be old but the infrastructure along the seafront is full of services and is all brand new. The city that once was the Brazilian capital received more than R$260 million between 2013 and 2015 and invested in revitalizing and renovating the 44 km of coastline. It has also built large cultural, historical and tourist venues. This was a step that can be considered vital to maintaining the largest airplane movements in the region and to remain among the top ten destinations in Brazil in 2016, according to TripAdvisor. Nowadays, the locals

are proud of the São Tomé coast, which includes Tubarão, Ribeira, Barra, Rio Vermelho, Jardim de Alah, Piatã and Itapuã, which have been totally renovated, gaining new tourist points, restaurants, bars, bicycle rentals and a bigger presence of public security. It is difficult to land in Salvador and not want to explore the rich seashore that surpasses 40 kilometers. To visit this region from end to end, you will find worldwide-recognized beaches. After you have landed, checked in to your hotel, changed into your swimsuit and put on sunblock, then we get visit the coastal highlights together, starting with Barra Beach. Its calm and clear waters are much sought after by locals and tourists, especially the ones accompanied by children. The sands are thick and the waves weak, ideal for those looking for relaxation, or even forgetting time and enjoying the sun. A few meters from Barra, one of the most important scenes of Salvador, the Barra Lighthouse, is found but we will leave this for another occasion.

Salvador, the capital of Bahia, seen from the sea
Sun and culture - As we continue our panoramic journey along the waterfront, we arrive at Ondina Beach. Their reefs create natural pools and are serene all day long. The same can be said about the beaches of Amaralina, Jardim dos Namorados, Jardim da Alá and Armação. These places offer lush landscapes and are suitable for gathering friends and families for such things as picnics. The beaches of Corsário, Jaguaribe and Piatã are also included on our Sun & Sand route. There are great opportunities for tourists for discovering new beaches with small waves and delicious natural pools. Its fine sands beckon when walking barefoot during sunset. Speaking of fine sands, is there a local that has never spent an afternoon under the burning sun in Itapuã? The composers Dorival Caymmi and Vinicius de Morais were right. The weak waves and paradisiacal scenery were immortalized in a song that today is sung
by dozens of Brazilian musicians. Besides the beach itself, we still have to talk about the famous Lighthouse of Itapuã, surrounded by strong waves and natural pools. The waters reach average temperatures of 26ºC on a great part of the state’s coastline, allowing the practice of various types of water sports. On practically all of the state capital Salvador’s beaches, groups come together to surf, windsurf or kitesurf. Divers also enjoy the capital of Bahia. Along the Bay of All Saints, visitors can discover some old shipwrecks. These wrecks are close to the beaches and are accessible to all. North Coast - Still with sun and sand, when we leave the capital Salvador to see what the rest of Bahia has to offer, we head to the north coast, which is also known as the Green Line. It is here that we find the largest number of resorts per square meter in Brazil, with different chains, stars, tariffs, services and opportunities for resting and having fun. About 80 kilometres from Salvador, it is the renowned Praia do Forte. The little city centre continues to look like a fishing village, with no street lights or traffic - cars need to stop in car parks outside of the city. There are 12 miles of beaches with many reefs, which can be visited by organised boat rides or diving. Coconut trees are the main vegetation of the region, which is why the entire coast is called Coconut Coast. A distinctive feature is that it remains sunny throughout the year, except in the months of May and July.

ultural richness, good gastronomy, stunning beaches, comedy shows and music make Ceará one of the main tourist centres of north-eastern Brazil. With an area of approximately 149,000 km², the region is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, such as Jericoacara, Cumbuco and Canoa Quebrada, and has many options if you are looking for peace and quiet or adrenaline. The natural beauties begin with the capital of the state, Fortaleza, which boasts 13 beaches, including Futuro Beach, one of the busiest in the region. Approximately 8 kilometres long the beach has several bars and restaurants and on Thursday nights, it serves the traditional caranguejada (crab dish). Another highlight is Iracema Beach, where the famous Beira-Mar Avenue is found. It has kiosks and stalls for those who want to buy cold drinks and seafood. It is still possible to choose one of the several establishments that offer almost daily musical attractions and the traditional comedy shows with popular artists from the state. The sunset at Ingleses Bridge is a must-see attraction for visitors to the region, as well as Dragão do Mar, a cultural complex that 44 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
houses museums, a library and venues for many different types of activities such as theatre and cinema. The complex, opened in 1999, is also famous for its modern architecture. If you want to enjoy the nightlife, then there are innumerable options of concert halls, with several musical genres. In most of them the beat, changes between forró, xote and xaxado. If football is your thing then it is possible to enjoy the local passion for sport by watching a match at Arena Castelão, one of the venues of the 2014 World Cup. The Central Market is another must-see. The four-storey shopping centre houses dozens of shops offering everything, from traditional food such as cashew nuts and rapadura (brown sugar dessert) to traditional drinks, clothing, footwear and souvenirs. But some of the most beautiful itineraries in the state are outside of the capital. The closest to them is Cumbuco beach, located in the city of Caucaia, about 30 kilometres from Fortaleza. Considered as one of the first stops for those who travel to the west coast of Ceará, Cumbuco remains a small village, but visitors can find services of various categories and prices, among restaurants, hotels and B&Bs.

Among the main tourist attractions are the Banana Lagoon, where you can enjoy kayaking, speedboat tours and banana boating, as well as the famous “esquibunda” (sandboard). Further along the west coast, tourists find one of the most paradisiacal places on the Brazilian coast. Recently voted the number 1 destination in South America by TripAdvisor, the city of Jijoca de Jericoacara is an inspiring setting with gorgeous beaches, crystal clear waters and white dunes. The destination brings together scenarios that seem to have never been touched by human beings. Located 300km from Fortaleza, Jericoacoara immediately impresses, due to Foto: Mtur
the beauty and simplicity that perfectly matches the large number of resources available. The beach has about 130 lodging facilities, ranging from simple guesthouses to five-star hotels, as well as pharmacies, markets and other commercial activities that cater for most tourist’s needs. Among the main attractions are Pedra Furada, one of Jericoacoara’s best-known touristic points – usually seen on local postcards – located in the rocky region of Jericoacoara, the Dune of the Sunset and the Blue and Paradise Lagoons, famous for their crystal clear waters and hammocks, which allow tourists to lie down in the water. Changing to the east coast of Ceará, here you will find one of the most famous tours of the state. On the Route of the Cliffs (Rota das Falesias), you can visit almost 200 kilometres of beaches. Departing from Fortaleza, it is possible to pass through Aquiraz, Cascavel, Beberibe, Aracati and Icapuí, arriving near the border with the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Here the highlight is Aracati, where the famous beach of Canoa Quebrada is found. It is also known for its busy night life on Broadway, which has several bars and restaurants. Canoa Quebrada offers buggy rides, passing through several local landscapes. The last stop is Icapuí, the land of the lobster, which is formed by three main beaches: Ponta Grossa, Redonda and Peroba. They have cliffs with exotic formations with shades from red to orange.

The island of Fernando de Noronha is one of Pernambuco’s treasures
Pernambuco Culture, celebrations, history and beautiful landscapes
T
his mixture makes Pernambuco one of the main destinations in Brazil. Located in the North-eastern region, the state’s tourism is one of its main economic activities and has one of the main air networks of Brazil in its favour, which serves destinations such as Portugal (TAP), United States (AA), Argentina (Gol and Latam), Italy (Meridiana) and Germany (Condor). The coast stretches for 187 kilometres, and presents inviting scenarios of paradisiacal beaches, such as Fernando de Noronha and Porto de Galinhas, and also stands out for its magnitude of historical importance and cultural traditions, such as the festivities of Carnival and June Party (São João). The beauties and traditions begin with the state capital Recife, one of the oldest cities in Brazil and known for its artistic and cultural heritage. The city is divided by three great rivers (Capibaribe, Beberibe and Tejipió) and is connected by a large group of bridges, without which it would be impossible to travel. This characteristic of Recife provides beautiful boat trips on the rivers, always held in the late afternoon and evening. In Recife, make sure you walk along Boa Viagem Beach promenade, the most famous of the area, approximately 7km long, 46 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
located in the neighbourhood of the same name. It is bordered by Pina Beach (Sport Beach) on one side and Piedade Beach on the other. The Boa Viagem beach is a spectacle both from land and air, due to the barrier of natural reefs that protect it, which are also the origin of the name of the city. The waterfront is also considered a good attraction and has a park, garden and sports facilities. In the historic part, Recife has some of the oldest churches in the country, such as St. Peter, Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men (built only by slaves), Our Lady of Carmel and Madre de Deus. They are all in excellent condition, with their original preserved naves and great historical heritage. The city still has good hotel infrastructure and great gastronomic options, with the presence of the main networks of restaurants of the country. If sun, beaches and spectacular scenery interest you more, then you can find what you are looking for just 43km away from the capital, in the city of Ipojuca, where one of the most sought after beaches by national and international tourists is located: Porto de Galinhas. natural pools make it possible to swim among shoals of fish in warm waters, something that is always possible when the immense coral formations are exposed. The pools are very close to the sandy strip and can be visited by swimming or on beautiful raft trips, when the entire coastline can be observed. It is perfect for diving and ideal for children as the sea is always calm. Tourists who visit Porto de Galinhas can enjoy buggy tours, which guarantee you the opportunity to get to know the beautiful beaches nearby. Among them is Maracaípe, considered as a surfers’ paradise. With great waves, the beach hosts important competitions in the Northeast and attracts sports people like windsurfers and paragliders. Besides the natural beauties, Porto de Galinhas has excellent hotel infrastructure, which includes large resorts, hotels and guesthouses, as well as several restaurants, bars and nightclubs. A little further afield, there are other options for tourists seeking peace and tranquillity. Located in the city of Tamandaré, 112km from the state capital, Carneiros Beach is one of the attractions of the south coast of Pernambuco. With a sea of warm and crystalline waters, it is still relatively preserved, which gives an almost wild feature to the scenery. Reefs, centenarian coconut palms, as well as natural pools, sand bank and the famous rivers Ariquindá and Formoso, form the landscape. During low tide it is possible to hike on the reefs and enjoy the local marine fauna. Due to its calm waters, Carneiros is a good option for water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, as well as enjoyable catamaran and diving trips. In addition to its natural beauties, the main tourist attraction is the Church of São Benedito, better known as “Igrejinha dos Carneiros”, founded in the eighteenth century by the Viscount of Rio Formoso, and is now widely used for weddings. Carneiros Beach also has a gastronomic menu rich in seafood such as fish and seafood stew (moqueca). The fascinating beach has charming hotels and guesthouses, also counting on the tourist infrastructure of its host city, Tamandaré. But when the subject is a tropical paradise, this Pernambuco destination is a winner. Fernando de Noronha is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This statement, which may sound pretentious, can be confirmed by anyone who has visited the archipelago, located 545km off the coast of from Recife. Foto: Mtur
Praia de Carneiros is relatively unexplored and hides unique splendours
Formed from volcanic rocks, the destination is the natural heritage of mankind. Only the main island is inhabited, in addition to the administrative centre. Before being an important centre for environmental preservation and research, today’s coveted destination was once a prison. Part of the building that was built to house detainees can still be visited. After, the archipelago became a military base during the Second World War. The facilities erected during the period currently serve as a tourist centre. Fernando de Noronha is considered as one of the main tourist attractions of the state, so that the natives who work welcoming the tourists go through constant training. However, visits have limited numbers, so it is important to schedule your trip in advance. The island is a good option for diving. The sea offers visibility of up to 30 meters. Those who cannot or do not want to dive can visualize underwater life through the NAVI - Natureza Viva Project, which consists of a boat with a large glass bottom that allows for marine observation. For those who enjoy surfing, Fernando de Noronha is one of the best destinations in South America. The tubular waves give it the nickname of the Brazilian Hawaii. But the archipelago is not just about the sea. It is possible to walk on trails through the oceanic forest to see the beautiful viewpoints. At night, the buzz turns to forró music, which brings together tourists and natives.

Rio Grande do Norte 300 days of sunshine a year. Learn more about the state’s main beaches along one of the most beautiful stretches of Brazilian coastline
R
io Grande do Norte is one of the main destinations of sun and sand in the Brazilian Northeast. Every year thousands of national and international tourists arrive in the state capital, Natal, to visit its attractions. Perhaps the reason being is that there are the more than 20 paradisiacal beaches, marked by calm blue seas and boundless dunes, it is considered as one of the most beautiful coastlines in Brazil and extends for more than 400km. In Natal it is summer all year round with more than 300 days of sunshine, therefore, it is no wonder that the capital is known as the “City of the Sun”. Ponta Negra is the most popular beach in Natal, as it is good for swimming and its excellent infrastructure, including hotels and restaurants help support the city’s busy nightlife. In Ponta Negra, you will find one of the most famous attractions in Natal, Morro do Careca - a dune standing more than 100m high and it beautifies the landscape. You will also find it on many of the city’s postcards. Leaving Natal and taking a 60km drive along the north coast, you will come across Maracajaú Beach. groves and lagoons, Maracajaú is a small fishing village, whose main economic activity is tourism. The great attraction of this beach is the coral reef with crystalline waters and the rich array of coral fish. It is also a good place for snorkelling. There is a coral reef 7km from the beach and is known affectionately as Parrachos by the locals. In addition to diving, there are beautiful coves of white sand and calm sea, suitable for a good walk and relaxing sea swimming. Travelling further to the north of the state, 110km from the capital, is São Miguel do Gostoso, a paradise for sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers. The beach town has gained notoriety since the late 90’s and is now one of the top destinations for water sports enthusiasts. Gostoso is geographically right on the “corner of the continent” where it is said “the wind makes the curve”. So the beaches, with waves and strong winds for practically all the year, have become a paradise for water sport enthusiasts. The beaches of São Miguel do Gostoso are the main attractions of the region: Ponta do Santo Cristo cove, considered the best beach in Brazil for sailing; Xepa Beach is popular with stores and

restaurants; and Maceió, is practically uninhabited all year round. All this makes for an ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity and contact with nature. In the south of the state, about 85km from the capital, Tibau do Sul enchants its visitors with its ecological diversity, almost deserted beaches frequented by dolphins and turtles, and a landscape composed of dunes, cliffs and natural pools. Within its limits is the famous Pipa Beach, but Tibau do Sul has its own charms: it is the perfect place for surfing. cliffs still covered by the Atlantic Forest, white sand dunes, coves and cliffs. Pipa Beach, a stronghold of hippies and surfers in the 70’s, has become the favoured location for foreigners who have settled in the area. In addition to Pipa, other beaches make up Tibau, such as Cacimbinha, Madeiro Beach - considered as the most beautiful and Amor. The beaches are for all tastes and styles: some with and some without cliffs that shelter different vegetation, calm water for swimming or good surfing, intense wind for sailing, natural pools with colourful fish for diving or quiet beaches to relax. It is in Cacimbinhas Beach that kitesurfers convene in great numbers. Afogados, Amor and Chapadão beaches are in a continuous line, they merge into one becoming one beach. Afogados is the surf point in Pipa. Amor is the most beautiful beach in the region, where the rocks of the natural pools form the shape of a heart. Madeiro Beach has emerald green sea with warm and calm waters, suitable for swimming and surfing for beginners. Its sand is clean, good for walking and practicing sport like frescobol (beach tennis) and football. You must stay alert, as dolphins can be spotted, especially early in the morning. ‘A
mixture of nature and urbanity that together coexist in perfect harmony’ is the best way to define Rio de Janeiro. The destination is favoured in Brazil both by national and international tourists. It is practically impossible to think about touring Brazil without a strategic pit stop in the Marvellous City. The city pleases so much that renowned musicians have already declared their love for Rio putting their feelings into words. Vinicius de Morais, Tom Jobim, Erasmo Carlos, Chico Buarque, Fernanda Abreu, Tim Maia, Gilberto Gil and even the American James Taylor with the ballad “Only a Dream in Rio” are some of the artists who have expressed their passion for the city with hits that allude to the natural beauties of beaches and mountains, as well as the joy of its people, its lively parties and the style of the locals. But what does this city have that both casts a spell on tourists and residents? In fact, Rio de Janeiro welcomes everyone with open arms. Proof of this is the Christ the Redeemer, who, from the top of Corcovado mountain, welcomes its visitors. The fame of the city expands through its numerous tourist attractions like its wonderful 52 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
beaches bordering the buildings and its abundance of parks and historical constructions. The most famous is undoubtedly Ipanema. A meeting point for the hipsters, it is here that fashions and trends are launched by a group of people always tuned in the latest news, to having a summer body, the latest diet and the best exercise. More touristy, with its wide mosaic promenade that imitates the motion of the waves, Copacabana is famous not only for the constant presence in songs, but also for artists who create true works of art in the sand. Along streets, handcrafts and souvenir stalls rise every night for groups of tourists who want a pleasant stroll and some uncompromising shopping. The start of your adventure exploring the city should start in Centro. The neighbourhood was completely revitalized for the Olympics and became a great place to spend the afternoon. In the Port Zone, an artificial lawn and urban work designed by the artist Kobra are some of the points preferred to by residents and visitors to the city. Be sure to visit the The Art Museum of Rio (MAR) or the Museum

of Tomorrow, which explores futuristic trends. Founded on the 1st of March of 1565, Rio de Janeiro overflows with experience and history from a not too distant past. Watching the ancient works dating back to the colonial period, which contrasts with the modern buildings, people in a hurry and the vibrant life of the city centre shops creates for a truly enriching experience. Some highlights are the Municipal Theatre, built in 1909 and inspired by the Paris Opera House; the National Library; the Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre (CCBB); Museum of Fine Arts and the Colombo Confectionery. If sand and sea don’t appeal to you much, then you can discover some of the green areas in the city, such as the Botanical Garden. The gardens are home to more than 6,500 species of trees and plants. The institution also houses monuments of historical, artistic and archaeological value and the most complete library in the country specializing in botany, with more than 32 thousand volumes and the largest herbarium in Brazil, with about 650 thousand fully dried samples available to the public on the website of the institution. But we would not be talking about Rio without mentioning the icons of the city. Among them is one of the main tourist points, the cable car to Sugar Loaf. The trip is almost mandatory, since its glass capsule, inspired by the London Eye (ferris wheel), in England, allows a 360º panoramic view of the city. At Morro da Urca, the cable car’s first stop, it is possible to get an idea of the size of Rio and the contrast of its differences that make the city so unique. Beaches and ecotourism, beyond the state capital Rio It is true that the state capital has its magic that enchants tourists around the world, but it is in the rest of the state where you will find the real paradisiacal beaches of Brazil. Isolated from civilization and in touch with nature, places seem to have come off the screen of a movie and are the consuming dream for adventurers, surfers, and for people who are looking to hide from the world and listen to the sounds of nature. They are destinations that rejuvenate the soul, that heal, that renew the energies and give rise to another journey of hard work.
A private paradise, Ilha Grande is the ideal destination to escape from the big cities and here you can rest at the edge of the sea or go diving, snorkelling, trekking, reconnecting yourself with nature. For a more comfortable stay, look for some of Abraao’s charming hotels. If you like rustic environments, you can’t miss the beaches of Lopes Mendes and Aventureiros. In Paraty, located 258 km from the state capital, the beaches are noticeable as being more wild and isolated. Access is only possible by trail or boat. And it is these same characteristics that give it the impression of being a secret place. The beaches of Antigo and Antiguinhos surrounded by green mountains have soft sand and crystal clear waters. To one side of Antiguinhos pass streams of fresh water, where it is possible to swim to clean the salt from your body. The city also stands out for holding the annual International Literary Festival of Paraty - Flip, which attracts national and international personalities. The festival is usually organized in the first half of July and has a program of almost 200 events, including a show, literature debates and book readings. Rio de Janeiro is also much sought after for its imperial heritage. After all, it was here, in the Imperial Serra Verde, that the Royal family spent much of their time in Brazil. A tour to Petropolis appeals to all age groups, just an hour away from Rio de Janeiro. The city houses the remains of D. Pedro II, Dona Teresa Cristina, Conde d’Eu and Princesa Isabel. In addition, it is possible to visit the Imperial Museum, the Crystal Palace, see the crown jewels and other attractions linked to the period.

Guarapari Beach is the most famous in Espírito Santo
Espírito Santo Urban life, beaches and possibilities for the whole family
A
State that is a little over 46,000m², Espírito Santo offers varied tourist options. From beaches to mountains, from ecotourism to religious tourism, the diversity of programs and tours pleases the most peculiar and refined tastes. Located in southeastern Brazil, the area is in a strategic point on the map, with easy access to Bahia, Minas Gerais and São Paulo. In all, the destination has 460km of coastline with beautiful bluegreen beaches and strips of soft white sand that invite swimmers to stretch out and watch the waves roll in. The beaches have kiosks and restaurants prepared to cater for tourists. Among the favourite delicacies are the fish-based dishes and the famous moqueca capixaba, a fish stew, made with local spices, that accompanies rice and pirão (fish gravy), stand out. The main beach destination of Espírito Santo is Guarapari and it is without doubt the best place to stay if you aim to get a tan in the sun and clean your energies in an invigorating sea bath. Its 46 beaches are great, not only for swimming but also for water sports such as surfing, sailing, jet-skiing and rowing. The sea, made up of 54 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
dozens of islands, coves and rocky shores, still creates the perfect environment for diving. The region is considered as the coastal destination of the state that best combines leisure with infrastructure. The seafront, with many urbanized beaches and beach promenades, kiosks, bars and restaurants - examples of the beaches of Morro, Castanheiras and Areia Preta - attract families with children and elderly people who enjoy calm and transparent waters. One of the largest beaches in the area, Morro beach has 4km of clear and fine sand. It is great for both adventurers who enjoy exploring the sea and for those who just want to enjoy calm waters. That’s because at one extreme its waves are strong and good for surfing, while at the other end the calm waters welcome families and people interested in lying lazily by the sea. Considered as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil, Meaípe borders an old fishing village. With weak waves and thick sands, the region attracts many people who wish to move away from civilization and enjoy the tranquillity of being able to relax the mind.
SUN & BEACH
If you are travelling with children, a good tip is to visit the Namorados and Castanheiras beaches. The two are divided by huge rocks, interspersed by reefs formed during low tide, natural pools filled with fish, causing much excitement for the little ones. When it comes to young people, Enseada Azul is one of the favourites. Formed by the beaches of Guaibura, Bacutia, Mucumã and Peracanga, interconnected by white and fine sands, the region has extremely crystalline water that allows good visibility. Just 300 meters off shore, a German freighter that sank in 1942 can be found. On the other hand, its neighbour Nova Guarapari plays host to the most popular clubs and nightclubs in the city. It is also a great option for sportsmen. On the calm beaches of Sol, d’Ulé, Setibão and Cerca there are good waves all year round. For those who enjoy ecotourism, the Paulo César Vinha State Park offers 1,500 hectares of preserved area, covering forests, beaches, islands, lagoons, dunes and wetlands. The park is part of the Biosphere Reserve of the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo and is open to visits and research. At the Centre of Experiences, the monitors show informative videos, slides and lectures on environmental education. If you want a “photographic expedition” you just need to be attentive. It is possible to come across armadillos, owls, hedgehogs, and an immense amount of birds. The capital, Vitória, and the neighbouring town of Vila Velha, located at a distance of only 12km to the south, tell a little about the history of the colonization of Espirito Santo. Buildings, churches, convents and monasteries mark the foundation years of the city. The highlight is the Convent of Our Lady of Penha, a tourist symbol of the State, founded in 1558. At the top of a 154m high hill, the view is one of the most beautiful in the city, where you can see Vitória, Vila Velha, Morro do Moreno and Costa Beach. Located just five kilometres from Vitória, Costa Beach receives the most tourists during the summer. Surfer should head to the end of the beach to a place called Itaparica, as it is known for its strong waves.

Hercílio Luz Bridge is the most famous ‘picture postcard’ of Florianópolis
Santa Catarina A State colonized by Germans with beautiful beaches and ecotourism
I
n the southern region of Brazil, Germany’s presence is still very much alive. It has been preserved for decades, thanks to the presence of groups of immigrants who arrived here during the last century. Traces of this influence are still present today in architecture, gastronomy, typical festivities and customs. We are talking about the small state of Santa Catarina, whose colonization can still be seen in cities like Blumenau, Joinville, Pomedore and many others. But apart from the traditions maintained by the first immigrants and their families, Santa Catarina reserves beautiful nature along its privileged coastline. The coast of Santa Catarina is 561km long. From the capital Florianópolis, with its beautiful beaches, to the region of the Verde Mar Coast, where ten touristic cities are located, you will find many attractions. Just in the summer season, Santa Catarina receives around 1.5 million Argentine tourists in search of sun and sea. But there is more to see. Whale and dolphin watching, rich cuisine, with an emphasis on shell fish and seafood based dishes, adventure tourism and water sports are just a few of the leisure and entertainment options. Florianópolis - The main entrance gate to the state is Florianópolis, 56 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
which has an airport interconnected to the other main state capitals of the country and the South Cone countries like Argentina. You can take a tour around the centre on a visit to the Municipal Market with bars, good restaurants, tourist-class hotels and a lively social life with nightclubs. If you have time, include a tour to Lagoa da Conceição in your plans. Formed by Canto da Lagoa, Canto dos Araçás, Sertão Grande and Retiro da Lagoa, the region contains beaches, dunes, mountains and the largest lagoon in Florianópolis. Picnics, hiking, paddle boats, schooners and kayaks are some activities among the preserved constructions from the colonial period, making a beautiful contrast with the rustic nature and the hustle and bustle of the busier days. Throughout the year the biggest highlight of Floripa are the 42 beaches that come in various sizes and have their own peculiarities. Surfers, children, the elderly, sportsmen and young people can choose between the quiet and the busiest beaches, which are transformed into big cultural stages, each one with its own characteristics as is the case of Jurerê, Joaquina, Ingleses, Canasvieiras, and many others.

Entertainment and leisure include parks and whale watching For those looking for leisure and entertainment, Santa Catarina has the largest amusement park in the country and South America. The Beto Carrero World complex, located in the city of Penha near Balneário de Camboriú and Itajaí is considered the ninth best amusement park on the planet and the best in Latin America according to a TripAdvisor survey, Beto Carrero received 2.2 million visitors last year. Set in an area of 14 million square meters, it has more than 100 attractions, including a zoo, circus, thematic shows and advanced technology attractions. The park is divided into seven areas: Avenue of Nations, Animal World, German Village, Old West, Pirate Island, Radical Adventure and Fantasy Land. Each area is decorated and has themed attractions that transport visitors to a world that seems to have come out of the imagination. The adventurous among us cannot fail to try the Big Tower (the largest free-fall tower in Brazil), the Tower of Terror lifts and the FireWhip, the first inverted roller coaster in Brazil and the largest in Latin America. Unipraias - Situated between two beaches - Central and Laranjeiras - in Balneario Camboriú, another complex is the Unipraias Park. With great amenities, it offers a cable car with access to both beaches with a breath-taking view. Half way between the beaches, there is an intermediate stop on top of a mountain from which you have a panoramic view of the city. Whales - Whale watching is another attraction for foreign tourists visiting the Santa Catarina seashore. From June to November, a spectacular phenomenon occurs along the south coast. Hundreds of right whales leave the cold waters of Patagonia to give birth and breastfeed their offspring off the coast of Santa Catarina. The region was transformed into a large area of environmental protection for these mammals, which measure up to 17 meters in length and weigh 5 tons. Whales are often seen at Imbituba and Garopaba, more particularly at Rosa beach. There are also tour companies that offer boat trips for whale watching that take groups to view the whales at close quarters with specialized guides.
The state capital also has beautiful beaches

mazonas is the largest Brazilian state and also the most preserved state in the country, with 98% of original forest cover. Considered as the lungs of the planet, the state has an equatorial climate and is part of the Amazon basin, which accounts for approximately 20% of the planet’s fresh water. The Amazon has long discovered its potential for ecotourism, with many attractions and itineraries. Nowhere in Brazil will you find so many activities and attractions focused on the environment and adventure. It is possible to partake in many forms of ecotourism in the Amazon throughout the whole year, due to the seasonality that takes place in the floodplains of the forest offers two beautiful landscapes, allowing tourists to experience the forest in dry and wet seasons. Spending a night in the jungle, rafting down the river’s rapids, tree climbing high up and exploring breath-taking caves are just some of the activities you will find here. With welldefined seasons, the same places offer different experiences for tourists depending on when you visit. 58 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017
Manaus, the capital of Amazonas, is a city of contrasts, which combines exuberant nature with a high-tech industrial hub. Manaus is known as the gateway to the Amazon Rainforest, the cradle of the planet’s greatest biodiversity. The area offers a wide range of jungle hotels and jungle lodges, which allow visitors to experience the tropical rainforest in comfort and safety. Away from the city there are many tours, mostly by boat. The most famous is the meeting of the waters of the rivers Negro and Solimões. In addition to the possibility of participating in ecotourism all year round, the state offers a variety of places to visit. For example, the Mamirauá Development Reserve, in the city of Tefé; Aldeia dos Lagos, in Silves; the communities of Ubim and Piranha, in the city of Manacapuru and the communities of Janauary, Paricatuba and Acajatuba, in the city of Iranduba. Another highlight is Anavilhanas, in the city of Novo Airão. Located 100 kilometres from the capital, it is one of the largest fluvial archipelagos in the world. landscapes of the Amazon. Between the months of September and February, it is possible to enjoy beaches, trails and boat trips. Another option is the Jaú National Park, the second largest national park in Brazil and declared by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity site. During the dry season, visitors have extensive stretches of sand at Velha Beach. Among the activities proposed in the park are rapids on the Carabinani River, some waterfalls and trails. It is worth remembering that a to visit the Jaú National Park, it is necessary to obtain prior authorization from ICMBio. Presidente Figueiredo, on the other hand, is known for its natural beauty and is named “Waterfall Land” because of the high number of this natural phenomenon in the region. Also, about 110 kilometres from Manaus, the city is home to the Ecological Reserve Cachoeira Santuário. In addition to enjoying the waterfalls, visitors can do adventure sports such as trekking, rafting, tree climbing and caving. For the more adventurers, the Pico da Neblina National Park near the border with Venezuela - is an excellent option for trails and trekking that can last up to five days in the middle of the closed forest. The park houses the peaks of Neblina and 31 de Março, which are the two highest mountains in Brazil. This tour also requires prior authorization from ICMBio.

ature in the state of Pará is exuberant. The beaches of Santarém and the mangroves are among the main attractions of the destination. The area called Polo Tapajós offers diversified attractions to its visitors and has as its main city the beautiful Santarém. The cities of the region are located at the junction of the Amazonas and Tapajós rivers, constituting a network of channels, flood plains and lakes, suitable for sport fishing and wildlife spotting. During the summer, from August to December, the green waters of the Tapajós River rise, forming beaches of clear and fine sand, among them is Alter do Chão Village, 38km away from Santarém. A natural spectacle is the landing of the herons at sunset in Monte Alegre. Here is also home to a state park of the same name and is home to archaeological sites with cave paintings that are over 11,000 years old. Belém is the gateway to the state. sport fishing on the high seas and bird watching from its mangroves are activities that attract many tourists. Other nearby cities such as Tracateua, Maracanã, Marapanim and Curuçá also have extensive mangroves and forests that attract large numbers of birds. Situated at the mouth of the Amazon River, Marajó is the largest fluvial archipelago in the world. The extensive plain stands out for its unique landscape, a wild paradise with vast fields, rainforest, mangroves, streams and large buffalo farms. The farms are one of the best tourist experiences of the Marajó. It is possible to go horseback riding, buffalo riding, canoeing, trekking, piranha fishing, fauna and flora watching and also joining in with farming activities. Affectionately known as the Pearl of Tapajós, Santarém is a pleasant city located in the central region of the Amazon, at the confluence of the Amazon and Tapajós rivers. In front of the city, the spectacle of the meeting of the waters of these great rivers takes place. herons, cormorants and snakes. In the heart of the Amazon, Santarém is a natural sanctuary that attracts visitors from all over the world. The region lives up to the famous biodiversity characteristic of the Amazon. In the region there are protected forests, waterfalls, igarapés, rich fauna and flora, besides the lakes and beaches formed along the Tapajós River. The most famous beach is Alter do Chão, considered as one of the most beautiful in the world, for its white sand, clear, warm and transparent blue water. A fishing village is located on the banks of the river and the beach formed on its ebb is surrounded by the forest and by the magic of its ancient inhabitants. The nature here is impressive with a green lake, the flooded forest, and the porpoises. The best time of the year to visit is between August and November when it rains less. Among the main attractions is the landscape, swimming in the river, taking boat trips on the green lake and through the flooded forest, trekking in the Piraoca mountain range, and Piracaia, with its Amazonian luaus (a traditional beach party). In Santarém there are still other beaches to visit. Located to the northwest of the city, near the airport, Arariá beach is accessible only by water. Formed by the Tapajós river, there are no amenities like bars and restaurants here. Maracanã is one of the beaches closest to the city. Its can be accessed by water, like Carapanari Beach, located between the beaches of Pajuçara and Jutuba. The beach of Ponta de Pedras presents great scenic beauty, highlighting its rock formations and the presence of vegetation near the banks. Trip on the waters of Santarém

gitated. Diverse. Lush. These words perfectly describe the city of São Paulo to those who have just arrived. With more than 12 million inhabitants, the capital is usually associated with the sounds of car horns or the high buildings of Paulista Avenue, which is true, however, the largest city in South America is diverse and, in every corner, you will find a park, a museum, a restaurant or a bar that will surprise tourists. Visiting the museums in São Paulo becomes almost mandatory where you will learn about the historical events that were the starting point for the development of the largest economic hub on the continent. The Museum of Immigration, in the neighbourhood of Mooca, tells, through photos and exhibitions, the route taken by thousands of immigrants. The Pinacoteca, near Luz station, exhibits a collection with about 100 thousand works, in the same building that housed the first art museum of the capital in the 19th century. Lying in the grass or exercising in Ibirapuera Park or Villa Lobos Park, whilst listening to the sound of animals is a great idea for 62 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017

anyone who wants to enjoy nature. It is a chance to breathe fresh air in the middle of the concrete jungle. At night, the hustle and bustle of São Paulo can be found at bars in the Vila Madalena region, with easy access to the yellow and green subway line. During the morning and afternoon, the neighbourhood also has a collection of street artists who have plastered graffiti over the walls of the so-called Batman Alley, a lane that was taken over by various artists and has become a trademark of the Vila “Madá”. But, what about food? What does São Paulo have to offer hungry tourists? The answer is short and sweet: everything. The city is a gastronomic centre. Japanese food restaurants in the Liberdade district offer typical Japanese dishes. It is worth adding a Japanese touch to the experience of visitors, as they are in the Brazilian “Japanese Town”. Tourists can also enjoy hamburgers and themed snack bars scattered throughout the capital’s neighbourhoods, or a deluxe menu, such as that found in the terrace restaurant of the Italy building (Edificio Italia), near Republica Square.

Porto Alegre’s busy cultural life
Rio Grande do Sul Traditions together with nature
E
ven the locals themselves cannot hide their pride of their traditions. For many inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul, culture and history are more valuable than any other heritage of the least tropical state in Brazil. That’s why we are talking about this destination to address its cultural and historical peculiarities. We have already explored the tourist itineraries, the customs of the capital and the countryside and the most popular parties in the state: the Farroupilha Festival and Natal Luz in Gramado. First of all, here are some “obligations” for those arriving in Rio Grande do Sul and want to immerse themselves in every part of the rich culture: to visit Gramado and its Christmas Festival, to visit the canyons of Itaimbezinho, to drink lots of wine in Bento Gonçalves, to try the traditional local barbecue, to enjoy shows and typical parties and the cold weather of the mountains in Serra Gaúcha. Let’s start with the most touristic region in the state. Brazilians and tourists from all over the world consider this one of the most enchanting areas of the country and one of the most sought after destinations: Serra Gaúcha. The weather is attractive all year round and it is here where an infinity of tourist attractions meet. In the summer, for example, its natural attractions, such as waterfalls, are the main highlights in addition to being associated with the practice of various outdoor sports such as rafting, zip lining and canoeing. In the winter, the cold is a beautiful invitation to enjoy the diversified hotel 64 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | ITB l Berlin l March 2017

Serra Gaúcha is divided into five micro regions, each with a perfect differential of attracting new tourists. One of the most incredible cultural tours is the wineries of Bento Gonçalves, one of the hearts of the national wines and considered the Brazilian capital of the grape. The Farroupilha Way, however, is the pinnacle of tradition and knowledge of local customs. Going to great destinations in the state and participating in the Farroupilha Camp, which takes place annually, is synonymous with enriching the body and soul with progressive and unique values. It is time to immerse yourself in this cultural heritage and go through 13 cities that are divided into two routes of the Farroupilha Way: Costa Doce (Camaquã, Guaíba, Pelotas, Piratini, Rio Grande, São José do Norte, São Lourenço do Sul) and Pampa Gaúcho (Alegrete, Bagé, Caçapava do Sul, Rosario do Sul, Santana do Livramento, São Gabriel). The route is perfect for a road trip, meaning a private car trip for the family. It is also sold by tour agencies to groups. There are several nearby areas that can be visited in one day, since visiting all regions would take about 10 days. It is time to understand every bit of this culture, and to explore all of its history, which is an important part of the history of our country. After all, the Farroupilha Revolution was the largest and most lasting revolution Brazil has experienced.

An innovative city, with sophisticated and excellent services, it has a great variety of attractions with leisure and entertainment options. At 4.8 million inhabitants, the metropolitan region of the state capital is considered the third largest in the country and the seventh largest in Latin America. As it was the first metropolis planned in the Republican Period, the city`s main characteristic is innovation. And what better way to learn about each peculiarity of the region, than through their events?
Rock in Rio: much more than a music festival Considered as one of the biggest music festivals in the world, the 2017 edition of Rock in Rio takes place between September 15 and 27 in Rio de Janeiro and has already confirmed the presence of important national and international artists. The line-up includes Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maroon 5, Bon Jovi and Billy Idol; other acts are still being confirmed. The novelty will be the Street of Rock. For the first time a Brazilian edition will have two Streets of Rock, one honouring Brazil and the other Africa. The location of the event has also changed. According to the organization, the City of Rock will be set up in the Olympic Park, which hosted most of the Olympic games events in Rio in 2016. The new venue is twice as big as the old City of Rock, also in Barra da Tijuca, in the West Zone, and will make access to the festival much easier. Last November, the 2017 Rock in Rio tickets sold out less than two hours after they went on sale. Fun with soundtrack - Music is everywhere in Rock in Rio. But the experience transcends the concerts. With a mix of entertainment and social responsibility, the festival is a complete event that offers several entertainment options, making it a unique experience with an incredible
soundtrack. In addition to the music, the audience finds several attractions during the festival. The most sought after is the zip line, where fans fly over the City of Rock. And the artists join in too. In 2011, singer Janelle Monaé caused collective hysteria during Ke$ha’s show as she flew over the crowd. Another historical moment, considered as one of the most iconic for the music industry, according to Rolling Stone magazine, was when Jared Leto, lead singer of the band 30 Second to Mars, came down the zip line singing during his band’s show in 2013. Having amassed 17 editions - a total of 1,588 artists and audiences of more than 8.5 million - the festival celebrates 30 years since its creation in 1985. The event started big and is now a landmark for the music world. Its first edition welcomed almost 1.4 million people. In 2004, the festival took off and was held for the first time in Lisbon and four years later in Madrid. In those three decades, the event grew more and more, gaining momentum and conquering the globe. Carnival: samba, street parades and decorations The biggest and most well-known event that translates a little of Brazil is undoubtedly Carnival. The revelry takes to the streets and colours the cities with glitter, costumes, confetti and streamers. The festival traditionally takes place in the months of February or March and has idiosyncrasies in each region. The most popular, according to international tourists, is the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. One of the largest carnivals in the world, the wonderful city expects 5 million revellers this year, with 1.5 million tourists. Through the streets, parades of the most diverse styles drape people in a profusion of colours, sparkles and costumes. In all, 577 official parades will take place, across all areas of the city. Typical carnival bands, or even rock and other samba styles can be heard. At night, the avenues light up, and ones that draw attention are the associations that parade in the Marquês de Sapucaí. Large floats, all with splendour and brilliance, charm the visitors with their mastery and scenographic costumes. The parade of the Samba schools takes place on Sunday and Monday during Carnival. Bahia is another region recognized by its Carnival. Electric trios (a kind of truck or float equipped with a high powered sound system and a stage for music performances on top, play for the crowd as it drives slowly through cities) and famous artists gather in the main streets of Salvador singing the classics. This year the folia will have more than 300 parades and almost 700 hours of music. Still in the northeast, in the city of frevo and maracatu, the festival mixes colours and customs, uniting traditions of the different ethnic groups that make up the country. One of the most multifaceted carnivals, Recife has diverse cultural demonstrations: street parades, association parades and shows. This year, Recife’s government decided to pay homage to Almir Rouche and Caboclinhos Carijós of Recife. The group Caboclinhos de Carijós is one of the oldest associations in the
city, with 120 years of history. Almir Rouche is one of the main musicians of the Recife Carnival, responsible for also commanding the Galo da Madrugada (Cock of the Dawn), the largest street parade in the world.

Events São João: the party of coloured flags, forró and Brazilian traditions
Events calendar
During the month of June, coloured paper flags adorn the streets and churches, a sign of the arrival of São João (Saint John), or commonly referred to as a June Party. It’s recognized as the most Brazilian party of all parties. Like Carnival, this is one of the biggest popular celebrations across the country, mainly in the Northeast, where the tradition is stronger. The cultural manifestation takes place in celebration of St. John on June 24, and St. Anthony, on June 13. However, because Brazilians love a reason to celebrate, the feast is not only celebrated on the days of homage to the saints, but during the whole month. The zabumba, triangle and the accordion dominate the stages with typical beats like forró, coco, xaxado, folguedos, ciranda, baião and xote. Everywhere the music excites locals and visitors who wear typical clothes and fill the squares with music, dance, traditional food and decorations. One of the main festivals takes place in Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba and is considered the largest São João in the world. The event has been held in the city since 1983 and lasts for 30 whole days. During the period, more than 2 million people visit looking for delicious food and a night filled with fun and lots of dancing. Every year Caruaru, in Pernambuco, contests the title of the biggest event in the world. The party is marked by traditional cuisine, with products made from corn (canjica, pamonha, curau, popcorn), among many other delicacies.

June Party: a plural cultural expression The rest of the country also celebrates the June Party. In some states the festivity goes through some transformations, being celebrated in different ways. In São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão, BumbaMeu-Boi takes place. From Santo Antônio’s day (June 13) until the 30th of the same month (São Marçal’s Day), folk groups from all over the state meet in the streets of São Luís to tell the story of the slave Catirina and her husband, who must resurrect an ox that had been killed. The groups perform around colourful oxen at a festival marked by dances and music. Throughout the state you can enjoy the best of forró, the bonfires and the rhythm that comes from tambourines.
