As the Minister of tourism himself, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio has already affirmed on several occasions, the work developed aims to make tourism the next vector of development in Brazil. And, in practice, what does this mean for those who want to know our beauties? Much more facilities and better infrastructure. Among the intentions already announced, there is the facilitation or even exemption of visas for requires citizens of countries that today need a visa to enter Brazil; increased air connectivity through open skies agreements and deregulation; a renewed infrastructure through concessions to the private sector; and, finally, new and modern equipment, made possible by means of desonerations that are already being studied. In other words, if not enough, the unique beauties of our territory, the hospitality of our people, the gastronomy and the culture, the world will soon find many other reasons to come to Brazil. Cariri: the union of forrรณ, history, culture and faith ITB 2019 | MERCADO & EVENTOS | 5

Geopark

For those who have an adventurous spirit, then you will find a great destination in Cariri, which is found in the southern region of the state of Ceará. This is where the only geopark in Brazil, the Araripe Geopark, is located. Visitors can access 9 geological and paleontological sites in an approximate area of 3,400 km², which covers the cities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte, Barbalha, Missão Velha, Nova Olinda and Santana do Cariri. The scientific and pedagogical tourist route is filled with archaeology, geology and paleontology. It is possible to go on an

expedition called “Unmasking Prehistory” where you will find records dating back 110 million years. There are 750 fossils of animals and plants of the Cretaceous period that give us an insight into the prehistoric life of the Cariri region. The Araripe Geopark is in the Araripe Tableland, a vast area of vegetation that houses a national forest, an environmental protection area and the geopark. Visitors to the Araripe National Forest can go hiking, cycling or just contemplate the nature of Cariri. Setur-CE

Petrified forest

Geossítios

Due to numerous climatic changes that took place 145 million years ago, water turned into stone. This phenomenon, explained by chemistry, can be studied and admired in the Sítio Olho D’Água Comprido, 6km from Missão Velha. The Petrified Forest of Cariri encompasses a treasure trove of significant value for Paleontology, besides being of special importance for geological study and paleobotanical evolution.

Horto Hill

Just 3km far from Juazeiro do Norte, Horto Hill is represented by the statue of Father Cícero, which is where the Living Museum of Padre Cícero and the path of the Holy Sepulcher are located.

Missão Velha Waterfall

The geosite is also 3km from Missão Velha and it appeals to its visitors with its 12m high waterfalls that were formed formed by the Salgado River.

Batateiras

After a 3km climb from Crato, a single pause during your trek is enough for you to hear the songs of several species of birds, among them the Soldadinho do Araripe. The natural sources of water from the Batateiras geosite make the Cariri lands fertile and also supply the local population with water.

Cariri Stone

The park is located in Sítio Canabrava, in the heart of Caatinga (type of desert vegetation), in Santana do Cariri. It is obligatory to stop here if you want to experience the diversity of fossils and other relics of the history of the region.

Pontal de Santa Cruz

A fascinating place on the top of the Araripe Tableland. From up here it is possible to see all the exuberance of the region and the graceful Santana do Cariri. The Pontal brings an obscure past back to the present and is based on myths and legends that attract the attention of tourists and locals, being one of the most visited geosites of the Araripe Geopark.

Ponte de Pedra

This geosite is located in the municipality of Nova Olinda, on the slopes of the Araripe Tableland. The highlight is the natural rock formation that is similar to a bridge, which provides an incredible view of the plateau and the countryside..

Riacho do Meio

The scenery here could not be more beautiful: crystalline waters, calm and mild temperatures. Riacho do Meio can be described as an ideal place to relax and is only a few kilometres from the centre of Barbalha.

Pterosaur Park

The park is located in Sítio Canabrava, in the heart of Caatinga (type of desert vegetation), in Santana do Cariri. It is obligatory to stop here if you want to experience the diversity of fossils and other relics of the history of the region.

The Region

Located in the South of Ceará, Cariri is known mainly for its religion, its culture and its craftsmanship. The three main cities in the region are Juazeiro do Norte, Crato and Barbalha.

Cariri is home to Father Cícero: the city of Juazeiro do Norte, which is 491km from Fortaleza and is the second largest city in the state. Those looking to find out more about religion in the lands of Father Cícero, then check out “Padim Ciço”, the greatest spiritual leader of the people of the countryside. Here you can follow the “Pilgrims’ Paths” and visit Horto Hill where all his life’s trajectories and history are represented in a museum. To get to know the richness of the cultural and historical heritage of the hinterland, then take the “Historical-Cultural Cariri” tour. Horto Hill is 3km from the city of Juazeiro do Norte and includes the statue of Father Cícero, the Living Museum of Father Cícero,

Religiosity is one of the local characteristics

the Church of Senhor Bom Jesus do Horto and the trail to the Holy Sepulcher (2,650m). Horto Hill gained prominence in the history of Juazeiro do Norte due to the presence of Father Cícero Romão Batista, a major political and religious figure of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Today, devotion to Father Cicero continues to attract hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from all over Brazil, especially in the Northeast. If nature, adventure and ecology are your thing, then you can follow in the footsteps of the “Songs and Charms of the Araripe Tableland”. The vegetation is quite diverse, presenting Cerrado and Caatinga areas. Its fauna is rich with birds, mammals, reptiles and insects. How to get there: The journey time by car, going from Fortaleza, is about 7 hours. By airplane, this time is reduced to approximately 1 hour.

Santana do Cariri

Santana do Cariri

The city of Santana do Cariri was created in 1885 and has the title of “Local Capital of Paleontology”. It stands out for having a vast paleontological site, where several species of extinct animals have been discovered. It houses the Museum of Paleontology of the Regional University of Cariri and the Cultural House, Felinto da Cruz Neves, which tourists can’t miss. Sightseers are advised to visit the Benigna Memorial and Euroville, a street with traditional houses from several countries in the world. You will even find a small replica of the Eiffel Tower. The Santana do Cariri Paleontology Museum is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, with over 7,000 fossils of fish, insects, reptiles, amphibians and plants. The sunset from the panoramic view offered from Pontal de Santa Cruz is one of the most beautiful picture postcards that visitors can take home. From Pontal, tourists can observe the Araripe Plateau. Santana do Cariri also stands out for its hand made products in the Santanense Association of Artisan Support. Tourists can purchase typical handicrafts made of lace, embroidery, leather, pottery and paint. In gastronomy, the highlight is the Cabidela chicken (chicken blood rice).

Nova Olinda

Nova Olinda is known mainly for being the land of master Espedito Seleiro, who began to make leather products as a child, when he learnt the art of treating and transforming cowhide and goat leather into pieces used by cowboys, such as saddles, belts and whips. One day, tired of so many replica pieces - leather sandals are a tradition in Ceará’s countryside and are sold in any popular market - he saw that he needed to innovate. Using natural products, such as the tincture of the bark of angico, a common tree in the city, he dyed the leather. The new yellow, red, green and purple sandals were successful and Espedito became valued within the fashion, cinema and design world. He has already made pieces for major Brazilian brands and, in 2006, participated in the São Paulo Fashion Week. The artisan still works and strolls through Nova Olinda, always willing to stop for a chat.

Setur-CE

Amongst the natural attractions of the area, tourists will find the Furna Pintada Archaeological Site, Ponte da Pedra, Olho D’Água Caves, Pedra da Coruja (Owls Stone) and the Poço do Inferno (Well of Hell). The architecture includes the São Sebastião Church and the Casa Grande Foundation Museum - Kariri Man’s Memorial, a non-governmental, cultural and philanthropic organization created in 1992. Its creation took place after the restoration of Tapera, the first Casa da Fazenda (Farm House) in the city of Nova Olinda, which is a crossing point for cattle across the Cariri to the Sertão dos Inhamuns road, in the period of the leather civilization, at the end of the 17th century.

The celebration of the Pau da Bandeira in the city of Barbalha

The second largest city in Ceará, Juazeiro do Norte, is 491km from Fortaleza and is known for religious tourism. The destination was for some years the home of Father Cícero, who was famous for his miracles of turning wafer into blood and even for helping in the independence and liberation of the city, becoming the greatest spiritual leader of the hinterland people. Today, the city is one of the three largest centres of popular religion in Brazil, together with Aparecida and Nova Trento, attracting more than 2.5 million pilgrims per year. Consequently, the area has a unique itinerary for those who wish to follow in the footsteps of “Padim Ciço”, as Father Cícero is known: the “Pilgrims Way” (Caminhos dos Romeiros). With several tourist attractions related to the saint, one of the most important is the Horto Hill, which houses the statue of Father Cícero, the Living Museum of Father Cícero, the Church of Senhor Bom Jesus do Horto and the 2,650m trail that leads to the Holy Sepulchre. To know more about North-eastern culture the Juazeiro do Norte is an omissible Popular Culture Centre, which has exhibitions, handicrafts, typical cuisine, a stage for folk performances, cordel literature and other events. Taste the traditional baião-de-dois with pequi, one of the main delicacies of North-eastern cuisine.

Crafts

One of the main craft icons of Ceará is the master, Espedito Seleiro, who was born in Nova Olinda, in Cariri. He began drawing and cutting leather as a child. The newest tourist spot in the city, the Leather Museum, opened to visitors in December 2014. Tools and antique pieces are part of the personal collection of the craftsman, Espedito Velozo de Carvalho, who is now 77 years old. His atelier and shop are on the same street as the museum. His father, Raimundo Seleiro, as he tells it, was responsible for making the sandals of Lampião and is a local folk hero.

As a boy, Espedito learnt to work with his father, Raimundo Seleiro, who was taught by his father, Gonçalves Seleiro, the son of Antônio Seleiro, the art of treating and transforming cowhide and goat leather into pieces worn by cowboys, such as saddles, belts and whips. When he was a child, his family fled a drought and moved from Inhamuns, the more arid area of Ceará, to the almost always-green Cariri. At the age of 16, in search of a better

life, Espedito left for Paraná. He spent three years there, always working with leather, and after returned to Cariri. One day, tired of so many similar pieces - leather sandals are tradition in the inland of Ceará and are sold in any popular markets - he saw that he needed to innovate. Using natural products, such as the tincture of the bark of a common tree in the city called angico, he started dying the leather. He made yellow, red, green, and purple sandals, full of drawings. An acquaintance of his then took the products to market to sell. Demand grew and the coloured sandals were the differential between him and the other craftsmen. Master Espedito gained admiration and his fame spread. In the last few years, Espedito’s work has turned into a signature valued in the world of fashion, cinema and design. He has already made pieces for major Brazilian brands and, in 2006, participated in the São Paulo Fashion Week. His work was the theme of the exhibition “Da Sela à Passarela” (From the Saddle to the Catwalk), in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Also created by Espedito Seleiro, is the coloured leather jerkin used by the character of the Brazilian actor Marcos Palmeira in the film “O Homem que Desafiou o Diabo” (The Man Who Defied the Devil) (2007). Just as he learnt the tricks of the trade from his family, Seleiro has taught what he knows to his sons, grandchildren and nephews, and with them he maintains the cooperative Espedito Seleiro Family Association, which brings together 22 professionals. If he is in town, do not miss the opportunity to spend a few minutes shooting the breeze with him. For sure you will not regret it.

How to get there

You can reach Cariri on direct flights from Fortaleza, Recife, São Paulo and Brasília. The flight time from Fortaleza to Juazeiro do Norte is about 45 minutes. By car, take the following roads, BR-116, BR-230, CE-385 and CE-060. Inaugurated on December 1, 2009, the Cariri Subway is a light rail vehicle linking Crato to the neighbouring city of Juazeiro do Norte, an initiative of the State Government in partnership with the regions of the cities involved. EMBRATUR

Digital strategy and promotions will be Embratur’s priorities in 2019 Innovation will be the key word to increase tourism and attracts foreign tourists to Brazil Customize promotion and invest in digital strategies. This will be the priorities of the Brazilian Institute of Tourism (Embratur) during 2019. The participation of the Institute at Fitur reinforced this mission. The president of Embratur, Teté Bezerra, participated in the launch of the Global Center for Tourism Innovation, a mechanism created to identify and give visibility to the companies that are leading the worldwide transformation of the industry in the digital era. “The UNWTO has guided countries to adopt measures and programs that leads to digitization. Embratur has already been on this bias since the end of 2017, an example of that was the electronic visa, that increased the emission about 50%. We adopted some of the measures and also launched a few digital platforms. We want to encourage companies and destinations in Brazil to follow this path to gain global visibility”, said Té Bezerra. Among adopted measures by Embratur, there’s the launch of the VisitBrazilAcademy, a new platform to qualify agents and foreign operators in the sales of Brazilian destinations. The seminar is divided by sections and presents the Country by its region. The intention is to develop other modules including more destinations to be explored in the Country’s promotion. The platform is available in four languages, Portuguese, English, Spanish and Mandarin. Embratur has been investing in digital platforms as a new model of tourism promotion. Only in the recent months, the Institute 14 | MERCADO & EVENTOS | ITB 2019

Teté Bezerra, Embratur’s president

has launched two new platforms: the Theme Parks (themeparks. visitbrasil.com) and Surf Brasil (surf.visitbrasil.com), with data for tourists seeking information on these two niches. Another innovation was the Visit Brasil Marketplace platform (marketplace. visitbrasil.com), focused on the international trade. The purpose of the websites is to improve the experience of foreign visitors in the Country. Besides the digital promotion, Brazil is focusing on joint promotion strategies with the South American countries. “We are looking for tourist corridors and products to promote the whole region. We work together with Argentina to promote the two countries to the Asian market. Peru wants to make a promotion because we see the interest of Asians on visiting Foz do

Iguaçu and Peru on a single trip”, said the president of Embratur, reminding about the direct flight between Foz do Iguaçu and Lima, by Latam. Teté Bezerra highlighted the change in the format of promotion in European countries, previously made by the Brazilian Tourism O f f ices (EBTs), that had their contracts closed at the end of last year. According to her, the promotion will now be carried out based on the data obtained by the EBT’s, in a personalized way, according to the characteristics of each market. “The EBTs were important to do a whole job of surveying the market and research for a strategic positioning of Embratur. Now with this data we will feed our digital platform and use all this information to make the promotions”, explained the president.

MINISTRY OF TOURISM

Tourism at the center of Brazil’s political and economic agenda Photo: Gustavo Messina

With the maintenance of the Ministry of Tourism, the sector gains a new development cycle

Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, the new Minister of Tourism in Brazil

The modernization of the general tourism’s laws, Embratur’s transformation into a promotion agency and the government decision to allow 100% foreign capital in domestic Airlines. The sector’s priority guidelines remains the same, but maintaining the Ministry after cutting and merging several offices, gave a clear signal to the trade that Tourism should gain more prominence in the new government. The man responsible for leading the sector to the center of the government agenda is now Marcelo Álvaro Antônio, who took office as 16 | MERCADO & EVENTOS | ITB 2019

Tourism minister in January. “ To u r i s m i s a c ro s s - c u tt i n g area and we will work together with other cabinets and with the Congress for the advancement of this and other petitions and determinations of the trade. We have the support of the PresidentElected to put Tourism at the center of the economic agenda”, said the new minister. The need for the alignment with the parliament will prove necessary in this first semester of government, when the Congress deadline to vote on the Provisional Measure approved at the end of

2018 by then-President Michel Temer, which allows 100% foreign capital in domestic Airlines. In addition to working together with parliamentarians, Álvaro Antônio promises to work hard to reduce bureaucracy in the sector and ensure incentives to multiply investment in tourism. “Our work from now on is to create resources to i n c re a s e c o m p e t i t i ve n e s s and encourage innovation in all activities of the production chain. With a new business environment, we will have a more accessible travel market, generating jobs, income and development ”, he predicts. The minister has pointed some priority measures to obtain important results of the country’s activity like the creation of the Areas of Special Interest, more air connectivity in the country to ex p a n d t h e d o m e st i c a n d international markets and visa exemption for countries considered strategic emitters. Regarding visas, the proposal for a complete visa exemption for the US, Canada, Japan and Australia, countries that already uses E-Visa, is already under discussion. There is also a proposal to give E-Visas to tourists from China and India. According to the Tourism minister, the changes aims to explore the country’s tourism potential, which still doesn’t reflects the number of foreign tourists visiting the country, neither the value expend. Foreign tourists spend US $ 6 billion annually in the country, while Brazilians spend US $ 18 billion abroad. “It is time to turn Brazil’s potential into economic returns”, said the minister.

Although this tour just stays in the pages of this edition, our country is pretty close, one or two flights away. DIRECT FLIGHTS We could not start this “How To Arrive” without mentioning Lufthansa and Condor, two german companies that operates direct flights straight to Brazil. Currently, Lufthansa maintains daily operations between Frankfurt/FRA and São Paulo/GRU (LH506/507) and between Frankfurt/FRA and Rio de Janeiro/GIG (LH500/501). Another nice opportunity for direct flights it’s with Brazilian Latam Brasil, that offers daily operations between São Paulo and Frankfurt. GOOD CONNECTIONS Other good and comfortable option is to board in the flights of the dearest TAP Air Portugal, that keeps a good bond with Brazil for decades. Brazilians and Germans have the opportunity to entrain on a much larger range to Brazilian destinations, although it is obligatory to stop at terrinha Lisboa before going to Brazil. GASTRONOMY

Brazil: Culture and Food Diversity Beaches, culture and hospitality. Brazil attracts tourists from all over the world for several reasons, but one in particular presents characteristics that can only be found and felt here: the gastronomy. When the subject is gastronomy, this plurality of colors and flavors becomes even more evident. Marvelous spices, street foods, typical desserts and unique ingredients are part of this cultural mix, which includes European, indigenous and African traditions, making the country a global reference in gastronomy, with options for all tastes. To begin with, Brazil’s most emblematic dish: the famous Feijoada. A stew of beans with beef and pork, makes the dish something indispensable for those who visit the country. All this accompanied by the traditional caipirinha. It’s possible to find the striking features of our cuisine in the northeast of Brazil, a well known region for its beautiful beaches and cultural attractions. Rich in spices and typical home-cooked meal, the region presents dishes that are considered delicacies even for those who live in other regions of Brazil. Among the highlights there’s the Bolo de rolo (swiss roll), a typical Brazilian dessert from the state of Pernambuco, which consists in a sliced cake roll filled with Guava paste, whose flavor goes far beyond what can be explained in a few lines. The Baião de Dois, a dish made with the two main ingredients of the Brazilian diet - rice and beans, cooked together and enhanced with ingredients, such as bacon, cheese, sausage, scrambled eggs (typical of Ceará), as well as crabs, Capote - also known as Guineafowl - and Tapioca, a manioc mass that can be stuffed 20 | MERCADO & EVENTOS | ITB 2019

with sweet and savory ingredients, present in almost every state of the region. But when it comes to flavor, Bahia is the most famous state, for its table full of seasonings, which counts on delicacies like the Bobó de camarão, Moqueca, Vatapá and Acarajé, this last one is recognized an intangible cultural heritage of Brazil. The strong taste of indigenous cuisine are also present in the gastronomy of the northern region of the country, especially in typical fruits with exotic flavors such as Açaí, Pequi, Guava, Cupuaçu, Cajá, Cashew, Graviola, among others, creating an immense supply of juices, desserts and ice creams flavors. The dishes with seafood are also prominent, as the traditional Moqueca and Bobó, a kind of stew with a lot of Brazilian seasoning. Another worshiped food by Brazilians is the barbecue. With different cuts of meat and different types of preparation, the South region of the country stands out in this activity, mainly with the famous smoked ribs, where the meat is cooked in a pit. But in a country well-known for

always welcoming the whole world, we can’t talk about gastronomy without mentioning the influence of immigrants in the cuisine of several Brazilian destinations. The European culture, the chocolates, cheeses and wines attracts tourists that visit the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. International culture can be even more appreciated in São Paulo, where it is possible to find Italian pasta, Portuguese desserts, Japanese and Arab cuisine that are very reminiscent of the food served in the original countries. The state is also famous for its street foods, that suits all tastes, like the popular street market’s Pastel, Coxinhas and Mortadella sandwich. Another highlight is the food of Minas Gerais, a cuisine that reflects the quiet life on the mountains of the state, with meals prepared in a wood stove with the flavors of the countryside (Tutu, Torresmo, Rib, Sausage, beef stew and Brazilian country chicken) accompanied by Cachaça. In Espírito Santo, a good request is the traditional Moqueca Capixaba, made in the famous and traditional clay pots.
