here is no doubt that Rio is the ‘picture postcard’ of Brazil for international tourism, but there is more on offer beyond its undeniable charms and beauties. The city is located in a state that has a reputation for the diversity of its attractions and geographical proximity. The major tourist cities are, at most three hours from each other, with easy access by tarmacked and well sign posted roads. Infrastructure is good and visitors have various options including international hotel chains, excellent cuisine, as well as ports and airports to make access easier. The highlight here is the diversity of its attractions. The options are divided between mountains and beaches. Besides the numerous natural attractions which are spread over six tourist destinations - it is necessary to visit many historical destinations that keep alive the culture and traditions that are present in food, festivals and architecture. In the ecological sector, the State of Rio de Janeiro guards many treasures that stimulate adventure and ecotourism, all based on environmental preservation and sustainability. Bird watching, horseback riding and extreme sports are some of the activities that are possible in the mountain regions. Only a state like Rio de Janeiro can provide experiences like this that can exceed expectations with its unique beauty and diversity. he Green Coast (Costa Verde), in the south of the state, boasts more than two thousand beaches and 365 islands - one for every day of the year. The region entices tourists to lounge around lazily on the warm sand whilst listening to the relaxing sound of the waves. Formed by the cities of Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande, Mangaratiba, Paraty, Rio Claro and Itaguaí, the region was once considered as a landmark during the foundation of the country, having housed one of the first colonized lands in Brazil. As an expression of refinement on the Brazilian coast, Angra dos Reis is an almost mandatory paradise for lovers of natural beauty. Located 150 kilometres from the state capital, the city has a broad menu of resorts, hotels and guest houses, which offer various activities, including all day boat tours, nature trails along rivers and down rapids, as well as extreme sports such as abseiling, mountain biking and rafting. Ilha Grande, in turn, is known for being in one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the world. A fine example is the beach of Lopes Mendes, which has been in countless lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its popularity with tourists is due to the surrounding wild vegetation with almond and apricot trees and its crystal clear and transparent waters. The environment is completely deserted. There are no buildings, piers for mooring boats etc. therefore the beach remains quiet. Here, nature reigns supreme.

Aventureiro is another special beach on the island. A small strip of sand plays host to a large coconut tree that, at some point in its life, grew at a different angle of 90 degrees. The tree is shown on local postcards. The beach has a gazebo and is a 30-minute trek away. From here you can have a view of the beaches and the surrounding forest, with its green palm trees, that add a fine mix of colour to the area. A fishing village makes up a harmonious setting, where friendly people are ready to receive tourists with warm smiles. The island is accessible by boat, with sails from Angra dos Reis, Jacareí and Mangaratiba.

esende, Itatiaia, Quatis, Penedo, Visconde de Mauá and Porto Real form part of the Region of Black Needles (Agulhas Negras), an exuberant mix of vegetation, waterfalls and paradisiacal sites with an interesting rock formations. Located in the center-south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the region takes its name from the Agulhas Negras Peak, located in the Itatiaia Park. At 2791 metres, it is the highest point in the state. In addition to the Agulhas Negras Peak, the park offers many other attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, a natural lake formed by the river Campo Belo, the Bridal Veil waterfall, with a fall of 40 metres; Montanha do Couto Peak, the second highest point in the park, rising 2680 metres above sea level; and Prateleiras has rock formations with plateaus. In the region, two cities are mainly responsible for the heavy flow of tourists: Penedo (165 km from the capital) and Visconde de Mauá (200 km). The first, has a strong Finnish influence, which is reflected in its architecture and local culture. It stands out with its artisanal chocolates, rustic atmosphere and Nordic cottages. Fruit trees colour the streets and give a foreign air to the city. A popular tourist town, Penedo has good facilities, with hotels and restaurants that host their visitors masterfully.

In Paraty, located 245 km from the capital, beaches are wild and isolated, with access only by trail or boat. These characteristics give the impression that the place is secret. Antigo and Antiguinhos beaches, surrounded by green mountains, have soft sand and crystalline waters. In the historic centre, houses in neoclassical and baroque styles and cobblestone streets give a rustic feel to the area. With great infrastructure, the city has excellent hotels and various restaurants of varying cuisine. One of the most popular drinks is cachaça. The city also stands out for hosting the International Literary Festival of ParatyFLIP, which attracts national and international celebraties every year. The fair is usually organized in the first half of July and promotes nearly 200 events, including shows, literature discussions and book readings.
ramed by large farms of colonial and historic architecture, the Coffee Valley (Vale do Café) Region is a legacy left by the coffee industry, the main product of the Brazilian economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. In total, 15 cities form the region, with the most popular being Valença, Vassouras and Miguel Pereira. Besides being able to visit hundreds of farms, tourists can explore the houses of the coffee barons and the slave quarters, which are preserved but also tell the history and show the birth of the country’s culture. During the month of July, the region hosts the Café Valley Festival, a phenomenon that has music concerts on farms, concerts in public squares and supports music workshops for local children. Another event that is gaining more and more momentum is “Coffee, Cachaça and Chorinho”. With gastronomic appeal, the event includes visits to historic farms for tasting, like the colonial cafe morning, with many cakes, bread, milk and soft cheeses, where most of the products are produced on site. Visconde de Mauá has a bucolic and welcoming setting for those who want to isolate themselves from the madness and frenetic life of the big cities. The variety of

attractions are the Glaziou Garden, the Cultural Foundation Lea Pentagna and Vista Alegre Farm, which was one of the most important in the 19th century during the Empire. Close to the State capital, Vassouras - with palaces, houses, parks and gardens – here we can stop and go back in time. After all, almost 200 years ago, the country was still a Portuguese colony, and Vassouras (Brooms, in English) - whose name derives from the tupeiçava bush, which is used for making broom heads – was also known as “Coffee Princess”. At the time (1850) the city was the world’s leading coffee producer. Bruno Wanderley/Petrópolis CVB
the natural scenery of Visconde de Mauá is an invitation to well-being. Through contact with nature, you can escape from your normal routine and do various activities that promote contemplation, like hiking, horseback riding, exploring waterfalls or swimming in rivers and extreme sports such as free flights, mountain biking and canoeing. The local cuisine is heavily fish based, with trout being the most popular and it forms the basis for many dishes in the local restaurants. On cold days, treat yourself to a fondue or one of the soups with varied flavours around the fire that is lit in the city centre. The Coffee Valley is an ideal as a retreat in rural tranquillity or for eco-tours. Miguel Pereira, just 115 kilometres from the capital, boasts waterfalls, small churches, rum and crafts. For its high mountains and hills, paragliding is a sport that attracts many visitors. Not to mention mountain biking, jeeps and the pentathlon, which also attracts many tourists due to the terrain of the area. For those traveling with a family, the Javary Lake offers pedal boats and small boat rides. Other attractions worth a look are the Railway Museum, the waterfalls of Vera Cruz and the Cachaça Museum. Be sure to taste the traditional tomato bread, a homemade delicacy that is only found in the region. Through its architecture, the history of the Coffee Cycle peak can be seen easily from Valença, a city located 148 kilometres from the state capital. All of the farms, cathedrals, parks, squares, monuments and houses, tell a little of the day-to-day lives of people that used to live in the region. he region that once hosted the Portuguese royal court, Imperial Green Hills (Serra Verde Imperial) has a pleasant mountainous climate, which is why it has become the main refuge for locals seeking colder weather. That’s when many can take advantage of the stylish winter clothes and warm up by the fireplace. A nice glass of wine and a cheese fondue or, for the most romantic, a chocolate fondue with fruit. Shopping is also a popular in the region. Textiles and handmade delicacies are popular with almost every tourist who visits the region. With excellent hotels, the Imperial Green Hills is
responsible for producing the most diverse types of specialty beers, which harmonize perfectly with all that the State of Rio offers. The Brewery Route passes through the cities of Petropolis, Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo, Cachoeiras de Macacu and Guapimirim. In addition to the major brands, they also offer craft breweries that show a little of locals customs and culture. People love the drink. A good trip is to start in Nova Friburgo (131 kilometres from the city of Rio de Janeiro) and go to the Ranz, Rock Valley and BarĂŁo breweries. Petropolis, founded in 1843 by Emperor D. Pedro II, was used to shelter the imperial family from the intense heat of the state capital Rio. Petropolis is only 59 kilometres from the city of Rio and offers a mix of heritage and ecotourism. Among the main attractions are the Imperial Museum, the Cathedral St. Peter of Alcantara, the Crystal Palace, the Quitandinha Palace and the house of Santos Dumont. On the outskirts, Itaipava stands out for its sophisticated aura and haute cuisine. Don’t miss a visit to the local breweries: Bohemia, Itaipava and Cidade Imperial. Colonised by Germans, Petropolis organizes the Bauernfest during the month of July. It takes its style from German festivals and features folk dancing, choirs, traditional bands (such as the Germanic Musical Band from Blumenau), beer contests, ethnic food and much more.
While Petropolis is the city of D. Pedro II, Teresopolis (which is 87 km from Rio) is the city of Teresa (Teresa Cristina, wife of D. Pedro II). Bucolic landscapes, street markets and charming restaurants are some of the characteristics of this city, which is full of charm. With attractions for all tastes, Serra dos Órgãos is one of the highlights of the region. Waterfalls, pools, trails and picnic areas are some of the attractions that the park offers. Easily accessible, the Soberbo Belvedere has one of the most impressive sights of the region. The peak Dedo de Deus (Finger of God) is a challenge for the more radical of tourists. rom Guanabara Bay if you look to one side you can see the state capital, Rio de Janeiro, and to the other you will see Niteroi, a “sister city” that reveals a blue-water coastline, scenic views with breathless landscapes, centuries-old fortresses and architectural works of great historical and cultural value, designed by the greatest exponent of national architecture, Oscar Niemeyer. The former state capital is also an important economic, cultural and gastronomic centre. There, the beaches of Camboinhas, Piratininga, Itaipu and Itacoatiara are highlights. On the other hand, the bay beaches such as Icaraí, Boa Viagem, Flechas, São Francisco, Charitas, Jurujuba and Adão e Eva are great for walks and outdoor activities. If you love history, then you can’t miss the fortress tour, comprising the largest complex in the country. You will visit the Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra and Fort St. Louis or Pico, from the 18th Century. Itaboraí, a city close to Niteroi, is popular for its cultural and historical significance. It has been the setting for novels and movies, especially in Marechal Floriano Square, formerly Matriz Square. It also boasts the largest stage in the city, where there are artistic and cultural events such as the traditional Festival of Kings and a Book Fair. It is in the historic city centre that is siècle building that resists time. Another relevant aspect of the city is the oldest paleontological site in Brazil, on the shores of São José Lake. Nature lovers should not miss the National Park Restinga de Jurujuba, one of the country’s protected areas administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). With a large number of on-going scientific research projects, the National Park extends over 44 km along the coastline between the cities of Macae, Carapebus and Quissamã. Its ecosystem brings together salt marshes, wetlands and the Atlantic Forest and there are more than 20 lakes. Campo dos Goytacases has always been synonymous with colonial farms, historic mansions and sumptuous manors. It is endowed with beautiful natural attractions like beaches, lagoons, environmental reserves, rivers and waterfalls. was opened in 1882, and is where the Environmental Protection Area of Lagamar was created. This is also the place where the Desengano State Park is found with its rich flora and fauna. Among its main attractions are the Desengano Peak, a 1,761m high mountain, the Mateus Peak, of 1,576 m, and the Pedra da Agulha. Casimiro de Abreu gained national fame in 1980 as a esoteric area, especially because people believed that an extra-terrestrial spaceship coming from Jupiter was going to land there. The city’s name comes from the poet and novelist Casimiro de Abreu and his house is now a museum with an auditorium, library, art room and small exhibition. The city has waterfalls and rapids on the Macaé River, where you can swim, go rafting and fishing. The best beaches are Praião, with greenish water, and Prainha, at the mouth of São João River. Make sure you include the city of Macaé in your itinerary. Known as the “Princess of the Atlantic”, it has gained international status due to oil production and the discovery of a Pre-Salt oil field off its coast. It has become known as the “National Oil Capital”. There are also historic monuments such as the Marechal Hermes Fort that originates from the 18th Century, Thiago Cortes/Neltur

Quissamã stands by the warm, sweet and dark waters of Tatu’s Cove, one of the main natural attractions and the beaches of Farol and Barra do Furado are frequented by surfers. In the historic part, the Cultural and Historic Complex Fazenda Machadinha, created in 2009, is formed by the ruins of a big farm house, warehouse, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio and slave quarters. One of the highlights is the Memorial Machadinha. To see more details of the buildings, from the 19th Century, there is a tour that includes several historical attractions and monuments. Rio das Ostras, in northern part of Rio de Janeiro State, has beaches and historical buildings, such as Poço de Pedras, made by slaves in the 18th Century, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also built by slaves. The Whale Square (Praça da Baleia) is a leisure area where there is a sculpture of a 20m long humpback whale. In the Costazul Beach waterfront are some of the main attractions of the city such as the Pier, an ideal spot to watch the sunrise and go fishing. There are 28kms of beaches. Santa Maria Madalena is one of the entrance gateways to the Desengano State Park, with its great natural forest and waterfalls. It is definitely worth a visit to the stone craft workshops run by young locals and maintained by the Association of Mineral Producers of Santa Maria Madalena. Other attractions of the park are the Torre Lookout and Desengano Rock. There is also the ‘Way of the Cold Lands’ (Caminho das Terras Frias), a rural track with natural attractions organized by local producers that are very welcoming. For those who want to escape the crowds that flood Búzios in high season, the beaches of Azeda (Sour) and Azedinha are more sheltered and quieter. The name comes from the colour of its waters, which are lime green. Access to Azeda Beach is by a street from the Ossos Beach. In the right corner there is a small trail that leads to Azedinha. Among the food options is seafood. Enjoy fish, oysters, mussels and shrimp, served in kiosks by the beach. Just 38 kilometres from Búzios, Arraial do Cabo also has its own areas of paradise. Unlike other beaches, the sea in Arraial is an intense blue. The temperature of the water is between 6º and 18ºC and Arraial do Cabo and Cabo Frio have the coolest beaches in all of southeastern Brazil, quite different from the average for the region, where the temperature remains around 20ºC. Considered as the “most perfect beach in Brazil” by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Ilha do Farol (Lighthouse Island) attracts swimmers who also take advantage of the natural beauty by taking photographs. If the marine life makes your eyes sparkle, then you will be sure to enjoy yourself. Arraial do Cabo is also known as the Capital for Diving in the country. Among the best beaches for diving are Prainhas in Pontal do Atalaia and Grande Beach. Often, in January, it’s possible to see penguins on the edge of Grande Beach. The destination also offers boat trips, where you can get to the Azul Grotto or to Marinha Island. But beware: permission is required to access the area. Beach sports such as running, stretching and yoga are commonplace and highly sought after by tourists and locals who look for healthy lifestyles and to have a sense of wellbeing. Lagoinha - In the far north of the island, Lagoinha is a small beach with a cove protected by mountains. It houses a traditional fishing village and has a dazzling view. It is ideal for those who want peace and quiet, to stay away from the hustle and bustle and to enjoy the simple life on the local beaches. Moçambique Beach – the longest beach in Florianopolis and one of the largest in Santa Catarina, Mozambique is 8.5 kilometres of clear and soft sand that ensures pristine natural beauty. Part
Joaquina Beach - Next to Brava beach is Joaquina Beach or Joaca, as the locals refer to it. Known for its perfect waves that are usually cold, Joaquina is the favourite place for many surfers and it is home to national and even the world championships. Ribeirão da Ilha e Armação Located in the South Bay, Ribeirão da Ilha has calm and shallow seas, different to the other southern beaches. The sand is thick and dark. On the coast, the architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries stands out and gives a special charm to this little piece of paradise. Just 25 km from the centre of Florianópolis, the Armação Beach still maintains a small town atmosphere. It is one of the major artisanal fishery centres of the island, with several fishing communities that exploit the fruits of the sea to survive. With Campeche and Pântano do Sul, they form the largest fishing complex in the city. Ingleses – This beach has five kilometres of blue waters with average waves and good facilities. In the summer, it is better to walk to the left of the beach where it is generally less crowded. On its dunes, sand boarding is popular, descending down the dunes on a wooden plank. The local population keep the tradition of the Azorean colonizers and enjoy the winter, as the beach is quieter for fishing. It is 35 kilometres from the city centre. Canasvieiras – Twenty-seven kilometres away from the city centre and at just over two kilometres long, the urbanized beach and brings together natural beauty and total infrastructure. It has few waves and is more popular for families. In summer it is advisable to arrive early to find a place on the narrow strip of sand.

Theme Parks and adventure: Beto Carrero World and Unipraias O
ne is considered as the ninth best amusement park in the world and also the first in Latin America, according to research by TripAdvisor. The other is a tourist complex, with trails, tree climbing walks, gazebos, an outdoor auditorium, an amphitheatre, food kiosks, excellent leisure facilities, shopping and services. Beto Carrero World, in the municipality of Penha, and Unipraias in Balneário de Camboriú, are two must-sees on a local leisure and entertainment itinerary. Last year, Beto Carrero World welcomed more than 2 million guests, in July alone there were 700,000 visitors. And we know why, the attractions thrill
parents and children. Situated in an area of 14 million square metres, the complex is located in the town of Penha. Families with children will enjoy this space with over 100 attractions, including a zoo, a circus, themed shows and hi-tech toys. The park is divided into seven areas: the Avenue of Nations, Animal World, German Village, Wild West, Pirate Island, Extreme Adventure and Fantasyland. Each area is decorated and has themed rides that take the visitors to a world that seems like they have left their imagination. The more adventurous cannot fail to experience the Big Tower (the highest freefall tower in Brazil),
the lifts of the Tower of Terror and the FireWhip – the first inverted roller coaster in Brazil and the largest in Latin America. At the zoo, you will see some of the most diverse species of animals, including endangered creatures. In the water park, the Empire of the Waters, boats glide along a winding one kilometre long river, with rises and drops down waterfalls, swirls, caves, gorges, scenery and light and sound effects. For adults, the park offers a large number of shops and even an outlet. Beto Carrero also offers concerts and shows of Broadway standard that will delight not only the little ones but the whole family too. Makito

T
he words ecotourism and adrenaline define Unipraias. Situated between two beaches - Central and Laranjeiras - the park has a cable car with access to both and an intermediate stop at the top of a hill from where you have a breath-taking view of the city. The first station Barra Sul is an interactive and multi-purpose shopping and leisure centre, with art exhibitions, crafts and local artist performances. The view is panoramic. By contrast, the Mata Atlântica Station has kiosks, souvenir shops, a tree climbing circuit, the Auditorium Angelo Bogo and the Environmental Park, which boasts a 500-metre walkway through the woods. Along the route, there are two lookouts to recharge your batteries with the stunning views. The last stop is Laranjeiras Station, which takes guests to the beach of the

same name. It is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches of Santa Catarina, the sea is calm and the water is clear. There are bars and restaurants that cater for tourists. The best options are to check out the seafood on the menu, typical cuisine of the region, or rent kayaks and buoyancy aids to enjoy water here. Two more stops are mandatory: the Youhooo!, a mountain luge that drops down 710 metres amidst the Atlantic Forest, and the ZipRider, a zip line that descends 750 meters. Both reach up to 60 kph. Adventure – Going up through the hills of Rio do Rastro, soon after going through Tubarão and Termas de Gravatal, you will be faced with lush landscapes. In São Joaquim, Bom Jesus da Serra, Urubici, Urupema and Lages, among others, a total of 17 small towns offer a landscape decorated with pines, canyons that are higher than 700 meters, waterfalls, rock formations and a route
that passes by 15 wineries, some of them are open to the public. In the main hotels, typical of rural tourism, like Rio do Rastro Eco Resort, in Bom Jesus da Serra, and the Fazenda do Boqueirão, in Lages, there is a complete variety of tours available for tourists, with horseback riding, fishing, hiking, traditional ground fire barbecues, traditional festivals and Italian and local cuisine, all with contagious hospitality that is able to captivate visitors of all ages. Balneário Camboriú – This is the favourite place for Argentines as, during the summer, they turn it into a “neighbourhood” from Buenos Aires and the city becomes very busy. During the day there is only fun to be had: to enjoy the 8.5 kilometre long central beach. Others prefer the remote beaches or even to venture out on a boat trip around the bays and coves. Next to it is the nudist Pinho Beach, which always arouses curiosity. As night falls the bars and restaurants on Atlantic Avenue fill up with people. Camboriú houses ten beaches and offers possibilities for all types. Families are also present in the south, in Laranjeiras, with calm waters and good facilities. Along the same road, a good choice is Estaleirinho. The beautiful 16 kilometre long panoramic Interpraias Highway, provides access to the South beaches and it is also possible by cable car that connects the downtown beaches. In the off-season, it is a popular tour for groups and senior public tours.

Bombinhas – It’s name comes from the noise produced when walking on the sands, which are rich in quartz crystals, causing small pops, like small bombs, this helps Bombinhas be one of the most popular beaches in the state. The site has good tourist facilities, with hotels, restaurants and shopping centres as well as traditional water sports. The region is known as the regions ecological diving capital. With a total of 16 beaches (Atalaia, Bombas, Bombinhas, Canto Grande, Cardoso, Conceição, Embrulho, Galheta, Lagoa, Lagoinha, Mariscal, Quatro Ilhas, Retiro dos Padres, Ribeiro, Sepultura, Zimbros, Prainha) hides one of the most fascinating underwater sceneries with coral reefs and shipwrecks, like the freighter, LILI (1957), on the island of Galés. For the radicals among us, during summer, it is common to see paragliders taking off from the Macaco Hill. Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, craft shopping, fishing and visits to museums are other year-round activities.

Porto Belo
Camboriu
Porto Belo - One of the biggest cruise ports on the Brazilian coast, Porto Belo has an island of the same name, which enchants with its paradisiacal beauty. The island draws attention to its unspoilt nature and offers convenience with a good range of facilities for its visitors. The ecological track “Pedra da Cruz” is the ideal tour to visit the area. The tour guides, who experienced the island’s occupation, have curious stories and legends to tell. Diving is also special here; in some places you will observe a multitude of animal species. Kayaking, water-skiing, zip lines, speedboat rides, banana boat are just some of the other options on offer.
Itajaí – Close to Balneário de Camboriú, Itajaí is made famous by its port. The city is now investing in a new marina to improve its infrastructure. Be sure to visit Brava Beach, one of the most loved by surfers. Brava is the home to the young crowd, who arrive in search of excitement and fun. In Cabeçudas, take time to stroll through the surrounding area and look at the beautiful colonial mansions. To enjoy a quieter environment, head to the beaches of Morcego, between Brava and Cabeçudas; and Atalaia, the waves are good and local surfers frequent it. Also worth a visit, is the Old Market, a mix of cafe, restaurant, craft and spices shops and it is right next to the Fish Market.
Penha and Navegantes – Stretching approximately six kilometres, the Armação Beach in Penha enchants tourists with its clear and transparent waters. It is one of beaches that has an abundance of large, expensive real estate. São Miguel Beach, on the other hand, has calm water, ideal for swimming and good for families with children. Surfers, for their part, prefer Grande Beach. From there you can see Ponta da Vigia, the Lighthouse, and you can monitor the comings and goings of fishermen on the coast, with their fishing tackle, or you can just pick shellfish on the rocks. Navegantes, has an airport with regular flights from Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and São Paulo that connects the region to the rest of Brazil. Located in the region, the beach of Gravatá is the busiest in the region with bustling nightlife and many bars and restaurants.
Governador Celso Ramos - Prolong your trip and take a tour to Governador Celso Ramos. The region occupies a beautiful peninsula that divides the coast into 23 beautiful beaches that are good for snorkelling, windsurfing, jet skiing and surfing. Some have good facilities like Palmas Beach; others are completely deserted, like Ilhéus and Bananeiras. The region also includes the biological reserve Marinha do Arvoredo. The Island of Anhatomirim is a crowded tourist spot and is home to forts and fortresses such as Santa Cruz. The accommodation highlights are the hotels and luxury resorts such as the Resort Ponta dos Ganchos that welcome artists and personalities. SANTUR
Piçarras – Found on the northern stretch of the Santa Catarina coast, the city has the advantage of having one of the most beautiful coastlines in the state, with seven kilometres of beaches with calm waters and two islands (Feia and Itacolomi). The city has as many tourist attractions and special attention must be given to its waters and because of these calm waters, is an excellent choice for the whole family. The beach is considered as one of the cleanest in the state. Itapema - With calm and crystalline seas, Itapema Beach shares its space with major hotels, bars and restaurants. Meia Beach, the largest, best known and most frequented by tourists, is a popular beach. For those preferring quieter places to visit, a good tip is to head for Costão or Canto Beach. Walk on the rocks of the Costão and admire the coastline, it is a good choice for those visit the area.

A must-see Culture, shopping and gastronomy T
he influence of German, Italian and Azorean immigrants, among others, is present in the areas festivals, food and architecture in cities such as Blumenau, Joinville and Pomerode. If its shopping you are after, then it is necessary to include a stop in a city like Brusque, famous for its hundreds of fabric factories and with some attractive cost prices too. Lastly, Ilhota is known as the capital of underwear.
Pomerode
If you want to experience a piece of Germany, then there is no need to cross the Atlantic, just take a trip to Pomerode. Located in the European Valley, it has been recognized since 1980, as the most German city in Brazil. The city has a rich cultural patrimony inherited from its first colonizers, who arrived in the region around 1860, coming mostly from Pomerania, a region in the north of Germany. With just 27,000 inhabitants, it is possible to see the culture and the German customs that have been passed down from generation to generation, in houses with half-timbered rooftops adorned by flower gardens. In January, the region promotes Pomerana Party, a ten-day festival, which is washed down with plenty of beer, music, dance and typical food that shows the visitor all the wealth of the legacy of the German immigrants. Furniture, porcelain and crystal factories attract tourists to the various showrooms to buy decorative items, handicrafts and food products.
The Italian culture is featured in the city of Nova Trento, located near Blumenau. Here, you can taste the best of Italian cuisine and visit the Sanctuary of Mother Pauline Sister, the first beatified Brazilian saint. In July, the city promotes a party for the saint that attracts more than 180,000 faithful devotees and tourists. For those who enjoy flowers and gardens, a good tip is to take a 123-kilometre trip to Joinville, also known as the city of flowers.
Pomerode’s neighbour, the city of Blumenau, which in October promotes the traditional Oktoberfest, also has a whole festive agenda referring to German culture. In summer, the highlight is the Sommerfest - the Summer Party of Blumenau, with musicals, dancing, typical food and beer. The event takes place in German Village Park and offers numerous attractions such as exhibitions and parades of folk groups in addition to the Hunting and Shooting Club. In the 2014 edition, the audience got into the spirit of this ‘summer Oktoberfest’ and drank 35,350 litters of beer. Makito

The survey reveals that 70.6% of foreign tourists came by airplane as a means of transportation to arrive in Brazil. Four out of ten (27.3%) came via car or bus and the rest came by boat. jumped from 350,025 in 2013 to 1,018,876 in 2014. FIFA World Cup – From the total of 6.4 million foreigners that visited Brazil in 2014, 5.4 million went to states that hosted FIFA World Cup games. Aviation
An overview of the Brazilian airline industry Like the economy, the Brazilian aviation industry is going through a challenging period. However, the sector is already demonstrating signs of recovery after the first half of the year. After a period of low numbers during the first half of 2015, the promotional efforts of the airlines were effective and in July, demand increased by 8.3%. In addition to promotions that encouraged ticket purchases, the sector’s seasonality also contributed to better results in July. Like December and January, July is usually one of the best months for aviation because of school holidays and family trips. The demand for domestic air transport has increased by 8.3% over the same period as last year. The number of flights, in turn, increased by 6.1%. The total number of passengers carried on flights within the country grew by about 11.5%, or 9.2 million. In the first seven months of the year, domestic demand rose of 4.5%, whilst the number of flights increased by 3.4%. With this, the occupancy rate rose 0.9%, to 80.55%. By June, domestic aviation grew 3.8% and up to May by 4.2%. The total number of domestic
passengers has increased by 4.5%, amounting to 56.3 million passengers. In the international market, where Brazilian companies account for about 30% of passenger traffic, demand grew 22.1% in July, an increase over the same month last year. INTERVIEW
Ministry of Tourism
Tourism Ministry invests in the Olympics to promote Brazil abroad Since August, the Ministry of Tourism is organizing meetings with governors, mayors and municipal managers of Brazil’s main tourist destinations. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss strategies for the nationalization of the Olympics and measures to expand the events gain in Brazilian cities. The idea is that the event can be beneficial not only for Rio de Janeiro – the host city but for the whole country. The strategy is to attract foreign tourists to Brazil to watch the games and make them want to extend their stay, visiting other states and cities across the country. To enable the entry of these foreign tourists during the Olympics, one of the Ministry of Tourism’s initiatives is the adoption of measures such as flexibility, facilitating and entering the country without a visa. In addition, the Ministry of Tourism will launch, through PRONATEC TURISMO, 52 courses in areas such as hotels, travel agencies, gastronomy and security, among others, which will increase training and help people gain professional qualifications for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. In addition to the cities directly involved with the Olympic Games, the program will also benefit 81 towns located in the vicinity of National Parks that can attract Brazilian and foreign visitors during the Games. It is an initiative to structure and value these conservation areas as tourist attractions, creating conditions and employment opportunities for local communities. In total, 214 towns in all regions of the country will be included, 90 more than who received investment for FIFA World Cup.
Henrique Eduardo Alves
By the end of 2015, MTur will offer professional courses in four areas: Citizenship, Enterprise, Social and Local Development. Each of them is directed at specific audiences such as young people seeking their first job, professionals and entrepreneurs in the tourism sector. The Olympic Games in Rio expects to receive 15,000 athletes from 205 countries, 25,000 media professionals, 70,000 volunteers and 4.8 billion viewers around the world. Olympic Torch - The federal government began a series of preparatory meetings in all Brazilian cities that will receive the Olympic Torch. On occasion, the Minister of Tourism,
Henrique Eduardo Alves, highlighted the relevance and timeliness of the relay to increase the visibility of the country abroad. The Olympic torch will travel to about 300 Brazilian cities from May 3, 2016, when it arrives in Brasilia from the Greek city of Olympia. From the federal capital, the torch begins a journey of 20,000 kilometres. The arrival will be on August 4 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the eve of the opening of the games at the Maracana. “It’s a unique opportunity and we want to enjoy it and make the greatest Olympics ever. We also want to develop tourism and increase the flow of international tourists to our destinations”, said the minister.

Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur)
EMBRATUR aims to repeat the successes of the World Cup at the Olympics Brazil is already living and breathing the Olympics. The event, to be held in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, has mobilized the government and the population. This will be the first time the event will be held in South America, which has historical significance for the continent and for the Olympic movement. It is estimated that more than 300,000 foreign visitors will come to Brazil for the competition. Vinicius Lummertz, president of EMBATUR, estimates that, similarly to what happened with the World Cup, there will be an increase in the flow of tourists to Brazil. “Rio de Janeiro will be the gateway, but we will work on tourists worldwide to encourage them to visit other Brazilian cities during the Games”, he said. According to Vinicius, it is time to align strategies for the international promotion of the Olympic games. “The Olympics are an excellent opportunity to create space to discuss and strengthen the sector at a key moment for tourism. The exchange of information allows mutual enhancement of all related organisations involved”, he said. Lummertz’s thinking is that EMBRATUR’s commitment should involve the Brazilian Tourism Offices (EBTs), Embassies and Discover Brazil Committees around the promotional initiatives for the Olympics. “We will take advantage of this window of opportunity that will project the image of the country worldwide and broaden the international promotion with focused initiatives that will position the

country as one of the best destinations in the world”, he said. More than preparing the country for the Olympics, it is important to think of the post-event. “In 2016, the cycle of major events held in Brazil will come to an end and we need to work hard to build a more robust promotion model that takes advantage of this momentum”, he said. For him, this is another step for Brazil to occupy a different position in the international market. Promotional Initiatives - Between the second half of 2015 and the first of 2016, EMBRATUR will hold the Visit Brazil Olympic, a project of specific events to promote and attract investment
in priority markets. From now on all international fairs that EMBRATUR attend, will promote the Rio Olympic brand. These are initiatives to promote the whole of Brazil abroad. “The challenge is to extend tourists time in the country after the Games”, he said. Other initiatives also aim at making the process of getting USA and Canada visas easier - initially for the Olympics and managing the content of the media so they can be fed by the states and cities and not only the federal government. “The virtual world is much bigger and we need to be dedicated to this complex reality that strengthens our market”, he concludes.

CRUISES
Season 2015/2016
Embark on the 2015/2016 Brazilian Cruise Season The 2015/2016 Cruise Season in Brazil is fast approaching. Just like last year, Brazil will have 10 ships sailing up and down the coast this season. And the expectation of Clia Abremar is that the final figures will be similar to those recorded in the 2014/2015 season: close to 600,000 cruise passengers. Discover what companies are offering along the Brazilian coast and how they can help you visit the country in a different way, on board an amazing transatlantic Cruise Ship.
Costa Pullmantur
Royal Caribbean Royal Caribbean is planning something new for this season. They are sending a new ship to Brazil to replace the Splendour of the Seas, much loved by Brazilians. The Rhapsody of the Seas will feature recreational activities and shows prepared especially for the Brazilian market. The cuisine is also something of prominence on this ship, which has restaurants that include classic and contemporary cuisine. In addition, visitors can relax in the spa and pools or they can spend time shopping and watching shows of Broadway standard.
This season, Pullmantur will have two ships on the Brazilian coast: Empress and Sovereign. They have complete leisure facilities with restaurants, bars, swimming pools, a casino, a gym, a spa, unique activities for children and teenagers, a disco and even Duty Free shops. Since the end of 2014, Pullmantur no longer has its all-inclusive service as the company wishes to allow travellers to be able to customize their package. With this, the company plans to strengthen the service offered on board, with the inclusion of new products. The idea is that passengers can choose between different packages considering their preferences, lifestyle and, of course, budget.
MSC In the 2015/2016 season, MSC Cruises will be the only company increasing the number of cruises on offer in Brazil, operating four ships in the country. MSC Splendida will travel to Brazil for the first time and will offer routes along the Southeast and the Northeast of the country. It is futuristic, whilst maintaining the elegance of Italian style; the ship is one of the most impressive vessels owned by the company. Guests can experience the best attractions of the different destinations on the Brazilian coast, Argentina and Uruguay aboard the MSC Splendida, MSC Lirica and MSC Armonia.
Costa will have 23 different itineraries for the 2015/16 Season using two vessels already familiar to the domestic market. Costa PacĂfica, will make the first cruise on 17 December, when it arrives after a transatlantic trip from Italy to Brazil lasting 19 nights. For the rest of the season, Costa PacĂfica will sail to the main ports in South America until March 1, when it returns to Europe. Also, Costa Fascinosa, will operate nine itineraries from December 26, 2015 to March 3, 2016.
Iberostar Iberostar Grand Amazon is featured in the Amazon region and has been running weekly departures from Manaus since its debut in 2005. The Iberostar Group enables travellers to sail in fresh water and go on alternative excursions such as alligator spotting or walking in the jungle on the banks of the Rio Negro. The ship-hotel offers an all-inclusive system, with accomodation, food and local and imported drinks in addition to tours, trips and artistic performances. In addition, the ship has two restaurants, two bars, a lounge, two swimming pools, a fitness room and all bedrooms have a window, allocated over three decks. November 2015

2016 Olympics
RIO 2016 No one doubts that Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is the next stage for the Olympic and Paralympic games - the biggest event on the planet - it will become the centre of attention of the world. But the games last for less than a month. For the host city, it is more than just being the stage for the main sporting festival in the world; the Games represent an opportunity to make changes that will last much longer than the 17 days of Olympic and 11 days of Paralympic competition. This is the thinking behind the organization behind the first edition of South American Olympic games. The event has helped to take lasting projects off the drawing board that will benefit the great protagonists of the 2016 games: the population. The preparation for the Games has been used by the city of Rio de Janeiro to accelerate changes that can improve the quality of life for residents and make the city more integrated. From Rio’s bid as an Olympic venue, the principle guiding line is that the Games should serve the city, boosting its development. Therefore, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are called the Legacy Games. For every R$1 invested on Olympic venues, another R$5 are being

spent on creating a legacy, that will improve the daily lives of those who live in the city. So that the objectives can be achieved, for the first time in Olympic history, more than half of the investment will come from the private sector, alleviating the strain put on the taxpayer. Out of the total planned so far - R$37.6 billion (figures refer to the second half of 2014) - only 43% came from public sources - the City Hall and the Federal and State governments. The other 57% come from the private sector. This was made possible through smart saving measures, such as Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). The Olympic Park, the Athletes’ Village, the Golf Course, the expansion of the Sambadrome, the Sanitation of the West Zone, the Maravilha Port and the operation of the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV). are examples of projects that are being financed, mostly, by private expense. The philosophy of the city hall against “white elephants”, the thought about what will be useful for the city beyond 2016, is reflected in the division of the budget. In total, R$24.1 billion (64% of investments) is for legacy projects. Of this, 43% comes directly from the private sector. It was made possible because of the Olympics, but it will serve the locals and not to the
athletes and delegations. They are projects such as BRTs (Bus Rapid Transit) and the Revitalization of the Port. The tangible and intangible benefits of these transformations, for the city and the locals, are already a reality, with projects delivered long before the event, anticipating and expanding the legacy. Within this perspective of savings of public money, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games have prioritized simple and sustainable facilities - keeping, of course, the Olympic standard of quality. With this vision, Rio elaborated its application project, establishing a close relationship between sports competitions and the legacy for the city infrastructure. For example, one of the proposals in the Candidature File, to host the event in four different regions (Barra, Copacabana, Maracanã and Deodoro), was motivated by the opportunity to build express lanes, connecting the entire city and leaving the population with this legacy of mobility, geographic integration, urban transformations and environmental improvements along the routes. One example is the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Trans west, passing through Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, Santa Cruz and Campo
Village and Park Olympic projects

Grande, which came into operation four years before the Games. The Grota Funda Tunnel, which is part of Trans West, is a promise from 30 years ago that has only now came off the drawing board. The BRT had expanded its original layout, raising the scope and benefits for the population. By 2016, there will still be the BRT Trans Olympic, the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) in the City Centre and the extension of the underground, the Line 4. The number of locals, which will be able to use the public transport will more than triple – we can say that this is an Olympic record increase. Another case of early legacy is the Rio Operations Centre (COR). Since 2010 (six years before the Games), the COR monitors and optimizes the operation of the city on a daily basis and especially during big events. The legacy is not restricted to infrastructure projects and mobility. Even for sporting venues, the goal is for sustainable arenas that can be reused after the event. The Handball Arena - through the new concept of Nomadic Architecture - will be transformed into four public schools after competitions. Another ancient promise, the Maravilha Port is an early and extended legacy.
Construction work on the Olympic Village, in Barra da Tijuca
Work on the Port Region is promoting a profound transformation in an area of great historical importance and that had abandoned for decades. Through the biggest Public Private Partnership (PPP) in the country, the Maravilha Port is predicting that by 2016, the 5,000,000m2 redevelopment will become a strategic residential, cultural, business and tourism hub. The project includes the construction and restoration of 70 kilometres of roads and 700 kilometres of new water, sewage, gas and drainage systems. The residential impact will be large: in 2009 there were 22,000 residents in the area and it is forecasted that by 2019, this number will reach 100,000. The urban operational rethinks aided the deployment of a more sustainable mobility concept, which values pedestrians, cyclists and integrated public transport, especially the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV). The viaduct called Perimetral will be replaced by tunnels and will lead to a public footpath. Some of the work at the Port has been completed and has changed the landscape of the region. This applies to the revival of the Hanging Garden of Valongo, Valongo Wharf and Imperatriz Pier- archaeological treasures. In 2013, three years before
the Games, Rio’s Art Museum (MAR) opened its doors, an area dedicated to art and culture and that received the largest international prize for architecture, the Architizer A+ Award. In 2015, the Port Region will also have the Tomorrow Museum, with futuristic and sustainable architecture, dedicated to science. Another highlight is the Environmental Rehabilitation of Jacarepaguá that is increasing the capacity to transport rainwater, significantly reducing flooding in the region. In 2013, the City Hall delivered part of this environmental legacy, with the completion of the work of macro drainage in 10 rivers, the recovery of 15 wetlands, the revitalization of riverbanks and reforestation of hills. By August 2016, most of the first phase of the sanitation project of the West Zone will be completed, benefiting people living around the Deodoro Sports Complex, one of the poorest areas of the city. They are carrying out sewage treatment services with the deployment of collection system and pumping stations. The environmental legacy also includes the constant monitoring of water quality and environmental education work with the residents.

alvador, the state capital of Bahia, is known as the Land of Joy. In addition to its Carnival celebrations, which have been made famous by its grandeur that last for seven days. The city also, throughout the year, maintains the perfect spirit for those who want to leave the day job behind. Festivals, historical and beautiful natural sights, as well as an effervescent culture, which are results of a mixture that gave rise to the city. A city that was colonized by the Portuguese and the descendants of slaves. So, if you visit Salvador there is a variety of possibilities: beach, historical tours, shopping and fine dining. The legend says that Salvador has 365 churches, one for each day of the year. At the same time, it houses some of the most famous Candomblé (religion) venues in the world, such as Gantois. The cuisine is also influenced by the African origin of the city and brings to the table the colours and smells of acarajé and moqueca stews. The historical houses are an attraction in itself. Pelourinho, a World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO, brings together hundreds of historic houses, which also were renovated and began to give the city a more colorful appearance. It is home to Casa de Jorge Amado Foundation, the City Museum and the Church of San Francisco. The coast brings entertainment options, either in a gazebo on the beach, or in the restaurants installed in the marina, providing beautiful pictures. The most famous beach is Porto da Barra, in the neighborhood of Barra, which brings together locals and tourists

looking for a quiet swim in warm water. The image of the Farol da Barra (Lighthouse) may be, like the Lacerda Elevator, one of the best known in Salvador. Responsible for liaising between the Lower Town, in the Cayru Beach, and High Town, in Tomé de Souza Beach, Lacerda Elevator hasn’t turned into a postcard of the city for no reason: it offers a panoramic view of the All Saints Bay at the top of its 72 metre high tower. Another well-known tourist point in Salvador is the Mercado Modelo, where tourists can buy souvenirs, try the traditional food made by locals or explore the underground tunnels that were used to store wine or to keep the slaves from Africa in the Brazil-Empire era. The Tororo Dike, home to Oshun (Orisha or spirit that reflects one of the manifestations of God in the Candomble Religion) is visited regularly by candomblé followers and is also an attraction in itself. Listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage, the lake has 110 square metres of water surface and an area of 25 thousand square metres in the vicinity. In 1998 it underwent a major redevelopment and received leisure and sport facilities, theatre, restaurants and 12 orishas sculptures. After visiting the Rio Branco and Aclimação Palaces, the Santa Casa de Misericordia Complex, the Cathedral and Castro Alves Squares and its many buildings, the next stop for tourists visiting Salvador must be the the Church of Our Lord of Bonfim.

Chapada Diamantina is one of the main points of Ecotourism in Brazil, located in Bahia, 427 kilometres from the coast (Salvador). In Chapada Diamantina National Park, which comprises part of the territories of Lençóis Mucugê, Palmeiras, Itaitê and Ibicoara, there is no escape from the long distances trails. To get to the blue Enchanted Pit in Itaitê, visitors face a 145 km drive on bumpy roads. You must arrive early so you don’t miss the sunlight that enhances the colour of the water. The Torrinha Cave is another must-see attraction. 64 km away, it is considered one of the most complete caves in Brazil due to the richness and diversity of its speleothems. At 1,120 meters of altitude, Pai Inácio hill epitomizes the beauty of the area and what it represents. The image from the Sincorá hill, especially during sunset, is one of the best that one can take from Chapada Diamantina. Returning to the coast, you can’t miss the cosmopolitan Morro de São Paulo, the most sought-after destinations of Dendê Coast, located on Tinharé Island, 248 km from Salvador. To get there you need to take a catamaran or a plane from Salvador, or go by car or bus to Valença and from there get a boat or a speedboat. Morro de São Paulo has some of the most beautiful landscapes of Bahia. One of those special places that one-day we finally stumble upon. Semi-deserted beaches, coconut trees by the sea, crystal clear waters and white sand, this combination of natural beauties enchants tourists in Morro de São Paulo, one of the best known and sought after destinations by worldwide tourists. Once you have visited Morro, you will forever take away, a memory fom this little piece of paradise. On the Discovery Coast, it is the roots and culture coupled with a strong indigenous influence and beautiful scenery. Here these influences are kept in a wonderful natural safe open to the world, keeping the memory of the rich history of Brazil and leaving it for the next to the visitor to the area. The landscape, which is almost untouched, has delighted Europeans since 1500 and continues to do so today. Located in the south of Bahia, are the cities of Belmonte, Santa Cruz Cabrália and Porto Seguro and includes towns such as Arraial d’Ajuda, Trancoso, Caraiva and the Monte Pascoal. It has 150 km of beautiful beaches with calm and warm waters, blessed by the sun and surrounded by the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest, cliffs, natural pools, marine municipal parks, national parks and many kilometres of deserted beaches. A few hotel resorts that are some of the most modern in the country only interrupt the desertedness.

he Northeast of Brazil is a very privileged region thanks to the beauty of its coastline and the diversity of its culture. And Pernambucorepresents this characteristic well. The state is full of natural and cultural attractions with historical and architectural heritage that attract tourists. Frevo and Maracatu are references for dance and music and the city of Olindain historical heritage. The reefs of Porto de Galinhas and the landscapes of Fernando de Noronha are on most of state’s postcards. Everything is synonymous with beauty, wealth and happiness. The history of the region’s European colonization started with the arrival of Spaniards in 1500, and the settlement by Portuguese later. In the seventeenth century the Dutch invaded Pernambuco and during this period the region underwent huge development. Tourism occupies animportant place in the state’s economy due to its rich diversity of attractions. The capital of Recife was considered the most cosmopolitan city in the Americas during the Dutch government. The construction of bridges, buildings, dams and monuments was pioneering, which resulted in strong growth. Today, few are still standing with the remaining having been restored, like the Fort of Five Points. canals and is home to many historical attractions from other times. In Old Recife, you will find Ground Zero at Rio Branco Square, decorated with a Rose of the Winds; the Malakoff Tower, the KahalZur Israel Synagogue (the first of the New World), the Fort of Brum and the former Pernambuco and Paraiba Stock Exchange. Pernambuco also has beaches with greenish and warm waters and natural swimming pools. In the capital, the most famous is Boa Viagem. On the southern coast, towns such as Porto de Galinhas, Tamandaré and landscapes adorned by palm trees likeCarneiros Beach offer breath-taking scenery. You will pass through mangroves, coral reefs and even clay beaches. The beaches of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, on the other hand, are a separate chapter and are considered among the most beautiful in the country. The state’s culinary dishes are varied. Dried meat, fish broth and mussels are a few options. But the roll cake, cartola (dessert made with bananas) and tapioca ice cream are highly sought after deserts. The largest popular Brazilian festival, Carnival, features heavily in Pernambucan culture. The giant puppets of Olinda and the Galo da Madrugada, the largest Carnival group in the world, show off the size of this event. The Carnival of Pernambuco is considered as the most diverse in Brazil.

Five unmissable attractions: Visit the Institute Ricardo Brennand and Ceramics Workshop Francisco Brennand in Recife Catamaran trip on the Beberibe and Capibaribe rivers, in Recife Walk to Our Lady of Remedies Fort in Fernando de Noronha Buggy ride through the outskirts of Porto de Galinhas
Already elected several times as the most beautiful destination in Brazil, Fernando de Noronha really does justice to this title. The archipelago has 21 islands full of beautiful beaches, clear waters, volcanic rocks and rich marine fauna (with emphasis on the rotator Dolphins). The Bays of Sancho, Porcos and Leão are in the top ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil; and the hills DoisIrmãos and Pico are popular attractions. Noronha is considered as aNatural Heritage site by UNESCO, and is located over 500 kilometres from the coast of Recife. It has been transformed in the 1990’s in to a National Marine Park, with controlled visitation. Access is by plane or ship. You must pay a tourist fee and entrance to the Parks. To avoid damage to the local ecosystem, only 240 people can stay overnight in the region per day. The archipelago is very small, about 17 square kilometres, a size that makes it possible to explore almost every corner of the destination. Noronha offers many activities for visitors including hiking, surfing, boat rides, buggy rides and dolphin watching. What can’t be left out of anytour is thescuba diving with depths of around 15 meters. But those who prefer something slightly less radical can go snorkelling, watching fish, rays and even small sharks in the natural pools of Atalaia. Porto de Galinhas - A village in the city of Ipojuca, 70 kilometres from Recife, moves at a leisurely pace until the arrival of summer, when the number of visitors rises dramatically. They all come in search of the natural pools bythe beaches and the clear warm waters full of colourful fish and rafts slipping into the sea. The destination is also the setting for rough water beaches such as Maracaípe, where a round of the World Surf Championship takes place during the month of October. You can enjoy the landscape in various ways, whether by taking a stroll, by buggy, raft or even on horseback. Olinda - Right next to Recife, only 7 km away, is Olinda. The city that was once the capital of Pernambuco, is one of the oldest to be declared as a Cultural Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO. This charming place has, among other things, an architectural ensemble of mansions and churches from the 18th and 19th centuries, which enchant tourists. The site is a mixture of relaxation and agitation. During the week, you can hear the chimes of the bells of the secular churches, the silent view of the sunset and, at weekends, the traditional sound of Maracatu. During Carnival, the cobbled sloped streets are transformed. The steps of the frevo dance and the parade of giant puppets attract many people. 40 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

n Ceará, the sun shines almost all year round. The state, located in north-eastern Brazil, has a vast coastline stretching almost 600km and is full of mangroves, salt marshes and beaches. Temperatures are high, but the weather is pleasant due to the wind that blows in off the sea. Away from the coast, in the hinterland region, the drier climate dominates, with very little recorded rainfall; in the mountains, because of the altitude, the climate is milder. The state capital Fortaleza grewaround the Schoonenborch Fort, built by the Dutch in the seventeenth century. Fighting was intense during several conflictswith the Portuguese, who later gained control and renamed the building “Our Lady of the Assumption Fortress”, which means Fortaleza in Portuguese, hence the name of the city. Today the fort is a major tourist attraction. On the historic tour, there are also other attractions such as Centro Dragão do Mar, the José de Alencar Theatre, the Ceará Museum and the Museum of Cachaça. In a city that is known as “Sun City”, the main attractions couldn’t be anything other than beaches. In 2014, there were about 230 days of sunshine. With such positive numbers, Fortaleza receives visitors in search of beaches and excellent tourist facilities
next to the sea. In the city centre are the beaches of Iracema, the bohemian area of the city, famous for its bars and restaurants, and Meireles, home to a famous craft fair. Mucuripe, where you can watch the fishermen working on their traditional rafts, completes the tour itinerary. Another famous beach is Futuro Beach, about 10 km further away from the urban area and it’s a favourite of visitors. The clean water is an invitation to swim, and the strong windsmake it possible to go surfing and windsurfing. Ceará is also rich in flavours. Both in Fortaleza and in the countryside, you can experiencethe most traditional Ceará’s cuisine. Good examples are traditional dishes from the hinterland, such as the “baião de dois”, made with beans, rice, cheese and butter; and jerked beef (carne de sol). On the other hand, the cuisine on the coastis based on fish and seafood. To wash down your food, try the Cajuína drink with cashew, a fruit from the region. Besides the beaches, Ceará attracts tourists looking for religious tourism, in particular the city of Juazeiro, where Padre Cicero lived, a local Catholic icon. Other destinations such as the Ubajara National Park, in the hills, and the Beach Park, the largest water park in Brazil, located in Porto das Dunas, are also quite popular. November 2015

The landscapes surrounding the crystal clear waters, white sand dunes, natural ponds and cliffs by the sea, make Jericoacoara and Canoa Quebrada two fascinating destinations. The beaches vying for the title as the “tourist’s favourite” have common characteristics, such as being in environmental protection areas but they also have some peculiarities. Jericoacoara is about 300km from Fortaleza and Canoa Quebrada around 160 km. There are plenty of activities, such as walking along the sand to Holed Stone (Pedra Furada) in Jeri, and the raft ride in Canoa Quebrada. To enjoy the nature, you can swim in the sea and lagoons of the regions, or rest in hammocks and loungers scattered around the beaches. To end the day in Jeri, it is worth making the effort to climb the 30 metre highdune called Sunset Dune to watch the spectacle of the sun disappearing into the sea. At night, bars and restaurants are attractions inbothplaces. In Canoa Quebrada in the Dragão do Mar Street (formerly Broadway) there are craft shops that sell famous glass bottles made of coloured sand. Juazeiro do Norte - One of the main religious destinations in Brazil, Juazeiro do Norte, in the north-eastern partof the state, attracts visitors because of Padre Cicero, who worked in the city for much of his life. The city of about 300,000 inhabitants, receives more than 2.5 million pilgrims a year. The main days are March 24 and July 20, the dates of the priest’s birth and death; and the Romeiro’s Day, on November 1, when processions, masses and “the wave with the straw hat” take place, a collective tribute recalling how the religious man greeted the people. The Juazeiro’s postcard is the 27 metre highstatue of Padre Cicero, located on the hill of Horto, the highest point of the city. In the same place, is the Padre Cicero Museum, with wax replicas of regional characters. In addition to religion, there are other attractions in the area such as the Cultural Centre Mestre Noza, with its sculptures of wood and clay, and the famous baião de dois with pequi, the flagship of Juazeiro’s gastronomy. Ubajara National Park - Part of Ceará’s hills, Ubajara National Park displays the wealth of its fauna and flora in an environmental protection area. The climate varies from wet to dry depending on the time of year. Among the various attractions of the park - trails, caves and beautiful landscapes - the main attraction is the Grotto of Ubajara, situated on a 535 metre deep depression. The access to the cave is found along a 7km trail that takes four hours, or by cable car, lasting about 3 minutes. part of the typical cuisine and is also used in craft production and folklore traditions. Besides the coconut, another highlight of the region’s cuisine is tapioca and seafood that can be found in the kiosks along the beaches. Maceió also has several historic attractions. In the district of Jaraguá, which means ‘harbour of the canoes’, there was a natural harbour, hence the name. The Historical and Architectural Heritage of Alagoas now listed it as protected. Also in the neighbourhood is the Church of Our Lady Mother of the People, the first church built in Jaraguá, in 1888. Maceió has local handicraft shopping, like the Craft Market (Mercado do Artesanato), which has over 200 shops that show and sell products made of leather, lace, clay, ceramics, wood and others. The market is considered asa showcase of popular art. Still focused on crafts, at Pontal da Barra you will find fillet –a typical lace from Alagoas - exposed on the front doors of houses. ll 3.9 million inhabitants of Paraíba know how pleasurable it is to enjoy all that the state has to offer. The coast is what attracts tourists, but the state also impresses with abundant culture and cuisine. Sun and beach, cuisine and history make the state one of the most charming destinations in Brazil. With a coastline of 130 kilometres, Paraíba is a great destination for those who like the sea. One of the popular beaches is the Poço Beach in João Pessoa. The famous sandbank is known as Red Sand, because of its natural pools and warm waters that give a special touch to the area. A visit to Picãozinho is also a good choice. Located in João Pessoa, its reefs form natural pools that reach temperatures of 28º C. What is most striking is the clear water, which allows viewing the flora and varied fish that interact with people. We recommend taking a snorkelling kit to see all that nature can offer. If you are fascinated by history, the state offers a tour called “Paths of Mills” (Caminhos dos Engenhos), which tells the 46 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

importance of sugar in the region. Areia and Bananeiras are two cities that were used as the stopping point for cattle drivers on their way to the north-eastern hinterlands and, years later, held various mills that produced products derived from sugarcane. The historic centre of Areia is an amazing visit because here is the oldest mill in the area, dating back to 1860 and its 525 hectares were used for the manufacture of rum. In Bananeiras, you will see the history of coffee. This colonial city, with hills and houses of the 19th century, was the largest producer of coffee in all of Paraíba and houses a hamlet with 80 buildings catalogued by the Heritage and State Artistic Institute (IPHAEP). For the adventurous among us, Barra de Camaratuba, on the northern coast of the state, is a good choice. Quiet and beautiful, it has few facilities, but is abundant in nature. The Manatee Project is interesting for those who want to experience more of the local fauna as it educates visitors about extinction and preservation of the animal.

Spread over 221,000 square kilometres, the capital of Paraíba, João Pessoa, enchants tourists with over 24 kilometres of beaches and a summer that lasts almost all year round. The coastline is the most impressive in the metropolis. Among the main attractions of João Pessoa are the greenish beaches such as Tambaú, Cabo Branco and Bessa, where you can see a nursery of turtles, as some choose the area to bury their eggs. Located near Tambaú, Picãozinho form true natural pools when its low tide, showing visitors the coral formations. Tours to these places tend to be made by boat and last for four hours, you will certainly enjoy yourselves by swimming and also experiencing more of the local food. Later in the day, the most famous tradition of the city is to go to the river beach Jacaré to admire Ravel’s Bolero, a ceremony that has become so famous that it is now Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Paraíba. The highlight of the city is Cabo Branco Lighthouse. Located on a cliff on Cabo Branco beach, the building is located about 800 meters north of Ponta do Seixas, the easternmost point of mainland Brazil. The intention when the monument was built was to represent a plant called sisal, which was very important for the region’s economy. The city’s history is 430 years old, and is recorded everywhere in the city. For those who like to discover the past, the Country House of Antenor Navarro Square is worth a visit. With construction in an art-nouveau style, it is great for photos. Another tour is a visit to San Francisco Cultural Centre, one of the most important Baroque complexes in the country. It was completed in 1770, finished in gold and stone. Both tours were listed by the Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage to be of such importance to the region. For literature lovers, the Memorial Augusto dos Anjos is a must stop. Augusto dos Anjos was a notorious local writer who lived from 1884 until 1914. Among his best-known poems are “Saudade”, “Versos Íntimos” and “Psicologia de um Vencido”. Currently, the house where the poet lived became the memorial that displays documents, photos, his death certificate and collections that belonged to him. 48 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

ou would be wrong if you think that Amazonas only offers Adventure Tourism and Ecotourism. With an intense cultural existence, Brazil’s largest state receives thousands of visitors each year during the Parintins Folk Festival that boasts the theoretical duel of Garantido and Caprichoso, the International Opera Festival and the Amazonas Film Festival; events that thrill people and show the roots of regional folklore. Amazonas covers more than 1.5 million square kilometres, which represents more than 18% of the country. It is difficult to talk about the state without remembering the Amazon and all its opportunities for tourism, either for relaxation in the lakes and rivers or venturing through dense forests looking for wild animals. There are several jungle lodges that specialize in ecotourism. The lowland forest, where several communities live, has unique characteristics that include unforgettable walks in the forest and canoe trips down aquatic trails with tour guides. Nature tourism, or ecotourism, is the main attraction in the Amazon. Visitors have the opportunity to learn and understand the importance of the rain forest, especially for the people who live there, who are primarily responsible for its preservation. Because of the closeness to nature, the state is included in tours promoted by agencies that sell cruises, jungle lodges and forest hikes. Ecotourism is everywhere in the Amazon and can it is possible to partake throughout the whole year, as the seasonality that occurs in lowland forests - where communities live - offers two

beautiful landscapes, allowing visitors to experience the forest in the dry and wet seasons. Manaus - The capital can be considered as the main gateway for national and international tourists to explore the abundant nature by which the city is surrounded. Tourism in the Amazon must begin in Manaus. On land, the attractions are related to the sumptuous buildings of the late 19th century, a time when the capital thrived thanks to the Rubber Cycle. The well-preserved art nouveau Palaces that spread around the centre are home to cultural venues. Among them is the highlight of Manaus: The Amazonas Theatre. It opened in 1896 and was attended by the barons that watched European shows staged there. In this vast and fertile land, it would be hard not to talk about a diverse menu that makes up part of the Amazon cuisine. The fish from the Amazon Rivers are garnished with a special spice to make the dishes delicious. Due to the existence of more than two thousand species of fish in the Amazon Rivers, the Amazonian cuisine values the fish above all else, as it can be fried, roasted or boiled. The most cooked dishes, such as stew (caldeirada), are accompanied by mush (pirao), cassava flour boiled in fish soup, or tucupi, a yellow sauce made from the fermentation of cassava juice. For fried and baked fish, it is essential to try the “baião de dois” (homogeneous mixture of beans, rice and parsley) and Uarini flour as well. The regional fruits complement the menu and can be eaten fresh or in the form of juices, jams, sauces, jellies and ice cream. November 2015

ará provides everybody who arrives in the state with incredible tourist attractions, especially ones related to nature. The Organization of American States (OAS) concluded that Pará has 49% of the Amazon’s natural attractions. The encouragement of tourism in the state has been boosted by two factors: the execution of projects in the cities of Pará and the state’s division into six tourist destinations. Places such as the Dock Station, Ver-o-Rio, Parque da Residência, Mangal das Garças, Feliz Lusitânia and Belém International Airport have helped boost tourism in the capital, that now has permanent attractions for people all year round. The attractions come from all over the country and world; and now there is more and its not just about the Cirio de Nazaré, which is a traditional tourism festival in the state. Located on the Equator, Belém is hot and humid due to the rain that falls almost every day. The hottest months are from July to November, when the temperature can reach 41 degrees Celsius. Although Pará has 49% of the natural attractions of the Amazon, Religious Tourism is also important in the city. Built in 1852, the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth is the only basilica in the Brazilian Amazon. Its history, its symbolism and its religious importance exert a profound influence on its religious imagery, leading thousands of pilgrims to visit every year. Featuring a neo-classical style, the church is one of the most beautiful in Belém and houses one of the most special Brazilian Catholic processions: the Cirio de Nazaré, which takes place every second Sunday in October and draws thousands of faithful people. Any Catholic who arrives in Belém must make an obligatory stop at the Basilica. Currently, the church is one of the main heritage sites of the city. One of Pará’s highlights is the Marajó archipelago, which is among the most important ecological sights in Brazil. With around three thousand islands and islets spread over 50 thousand square kilometres, it is the largest river archipelago in the world and is an Environmental Protection Area. destinations in Para. Lakes, mangroves, streams, archaeological sites, wetlands and river beaches are some of the natural resources that the island offers. On a boat trip, the immensity and the charms of the region can be enjoyed. Mysterious trails invite you on an unforgettable tour. The freshwater river beaches look a lot like sea beaches. Grande Beach is urban and has brackish water, but attracts many people because of its good infrastructure. The state capital is becoming more and more modernized. Since 2000, the city has gone through a process of revitalization that has updated the local architecture. One example is the Docks Station, a port of warehouses in the Guajará Bay, which has become an important cultural and gastronomic area with bars, restaurants and art and film exhibitions. Boats leave to the Amazon from here. It has been known as a tourist complex since 2000 and celebrates 15 years this year. The station receives a high number of tourists during peak season to watch the spectacular setting of the sun at the end of a boat tour. In addition, the area offers busy nights with bars, restaurants and stalls with typical handicrafts from the region. Late afternoon, “happy hour” begins, with cut price food and drinks in bars. Do not forget to visit Ver-o-Peso, a tourism and cultural point in the city of Belém. It is considered the largest outdoor fair in Latin America. Herbs, roots, fruits, fish, are some of the products found in the market. Opened in 1901, Ver-o-Peso market’s products arrive mostly by boat and it is one of the oldest public markets in the country. Speaking of food, cuisine from Pará is also honoured for its diversity and sophistication, in which the spices, aromas and exotic flavours attract the attention not only of the great Brazilian chefs, but also of international specialists. Typical local dishes such as Vatapá, Chibé, Tacacá, Caruru, Cassava, and specific fish and shellfish (Pirarucu, Tambaqui, Acará, Tucunaré) can be found at any time of year around the city. The local desserts and liqueurs feature a menu rich in fruit, mainly coming from the Amazon: açaí, cupuaçu, peach palm, guarana and mango, that can be easily harvested on any street in the state capital.

In the town, you can enjoy the spectacle of the meeting of the waters of these great rivers. For kilometres, the waters of the two rivers run side by side, without mixing their different colours and densities of water. Another beach that stands out is Rosa Beach, in the municipality of Imbituba, recognized by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Mobilized by journalist Giovanni Rossi, many Italians lived there with their own organization, growing their own food, without hierarchy and with the free love ideology, promoting the emancipation of women in relationships. In Estrada de Ferro (Railroad) it is possible to take a train ride from Curitiba to Morretes and enjoy the beautiful view.
Leaving history behind and looking to the future, we arrive at the state capital, Curitiba. The cold city is among the 10 cities with the best Human Development Index in Brazil, according to the United Nations (UN). Well organized, Curitiba stands out for its advanced infrastructure, but without losing the charm of a small city. Due to the strong influence of European immigrants, art and culture are tourist highlights. The “Brazilian London” as it is affectionately known is host to various art forms. Thus, travellers interested in enjoying the culture have the possibility of knowing the Wire Opera Theatre, one of the postcards of the city, which in addition to modern architecture has two theatres, Paulo Leminsk, which seats more than 30,000 people and is outdoors, and Wire Opera House, made of metal, with transparent walls, cabins and seats that accommodates 1,600 people. The San Francisco district is also a must-stop for lovers of culture. Famous for its bars and old buildings, in the region there is the famous Art and Crafts Fair Lago da Ordem, which takes place every Sunday from 9h to 14h, and is free. Visitors find over a thousand stalls with various products such as crafts, food, books, bags, clothes and decorations. Walking the streets of Curitiba, tourists have another important stop to make, The Tanguá Park is a place where you can enjoy a beautiful sunset. In addition to climbing a lookout 65 meters high, enjoying waterfall, lakes, biking, bridges, barbecues and a garden in a French style with flowerbeds and ponds. Gastronomy is another highlight that deserves attention. The city offers a tour that takes visitors around the city tasting traditional dishes in restaurants that, through its food, tell the history of the state. The tour stops at two traditional sights: the Paraná Museum and Curitiba Mosque. 62 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

state with diverse and rich nature, beauty, plenty of smiles, parties and moments to be cherished. This is the real Rio de Janeiro, the main tourist destination in Brazil and the most desirable for international tourists. Much more than just Sun and Sand, Rio - as locals affectionately dub it - has ecotourism, adventure tourism, culture, history, shops and an effervescent nightlife. It also has villages and deserted islands for those who want to get away from the big cities and listen to the sounds of the ocean or forest, which promote relaxation. In the capital, sunny days await beachgoers who wish to lounge around lazily and cool off in the salty waters of the sea. Among the favourite beaches for tourists and residents is the Beach in Ipanema, a place for hipsters. In the West Zone of the city, the beaches of Barra, Macumba and Prainha are popular as they are further away from built up areas. Be sure to stroll along Copacabana beach though and savour the moment with a photo on the famous promenade. Make sure you see the sand sculptures made by local artists. erected every afternoon along the beach. Strolling through the historic part of town can be interesting. Founded in 1565, Rio de Janeiro overflows with experiences of a time not so long ago, in fact, just 450 years ago. Take a look at the ancient buildings, which date back to colonial times, which contrast with the modern ones, the hustle and bustle of the vibrant life of the city centre is a truly enriching experience. An obligatory stop is at the Municipal Theatre, whose architecture was inspired by the Paris Opera House, at the Museum of Fine Arts and at the National Library. To eat, treat yourself to the delights of Confeitaria Colombo, built in 1893. The house is a symbol of the belle 茅poque in the destination. For a cold beer or a typical carioca caipirinha, a good tip is Lapa where you will find vibrant bars, pool tables, night clubs, samba, pagoda, forr贸 and electronic music. Anything is possible here. If you are in search of a trendier place then go up to Santa Teresa and get lost in the heart of street art, workshops, gourmet food and imported beers. November 2015

he surroundings areas of Rio are full of different and unique places that attract people with different profiles. In Ilha Grande (Big Island), diving, relaxation, trails and a spectacle of natural beauty await those who venture the few hours that it takes to arrive by boat from the beaches of Angra dos Reis. The most famous beaches – crowded during high season - are Aventureiro and Lopes Mendes. Because they are the more distant and isolated and take several hours to arrive there, camping is a good option. If you prefer more infrastructure and comfort, the village of Abraão is ideal. B&Bs, restaurants and grocery stores are available to visitors. Another destination that delights tourists is Paraty, located 258 km from the state capital. The highlight is the historical centre, where the Baroque houses and cobbled streets give a rustic atmosphere to the city. During the month of July, the city hosts the International Literary Festival of Paraty - FLIP. With shows, literary discussions, book readings and famous authors are the attractions of this event that enlivens the city and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Nightlife? International clubs? Beautiful and elegant people? All this can be found in Buzios. The city, famous for Rua das Pedras (Cobbled Street) and its charming shops that adorn it with its coloured windows, are home of the major foreign clubs, such as Privilege and Pacha, both from Ibiza. The beaches are also famous for natural beauty and water sports such as kayaking, sailing, stand-up paddle, diving, banana boating and more, especially the beaches of Geribá, Ferradura, João Fernandes, Azeda and Azedinha. To become embroiled in nature, explore the region Agulhas Negras, formed by the cities of Resende, Itatiaia, Quatis, Penedo, Visconde de Mauá and Porto Real. The Itatiaia park is where the highest peak of Rio de Janeiro state is found: the Agulhas Negras Peak, at 2791 metres. In addition to the peak, horseback riding, mountain biking, waterfalls, pristine lakes, trails, trekking, and rocky plateaus are some of the local attractions. Penedo and Visconde de Mauá, a bucolic setting refers visitors to other periods. Note the strong influences of Finnish architecture in Penedo and enjoy artisanal chocolates.

Spread across a total area of 786 hectares, it is the largest outdoor arts centre in Latin America. The site is one of the few places in the world where nature from the Atlantic Forest and modernity merge and create a new way of thinking – ‘art works’. Many famous artists have their works inInhotim, like CildoMeireles, Tunga, Vik Muniz, HélioOiticica, Matthew Barney, Yayoi Kusama and Adriana Varejão. Apart from these spectacles, the centre is the only place in Latin America that has a copy of the corpse flower, a native species from Asia known as the largest flower in the world. Tiradentes, OuroPreto and Mariana represent the history of the state. Thousands of people began travelling to historic cities after the discovery of gold and precious stones in the region. The

amazing thing is that the feeling when visiting these cities is that they are frozen in the seventeenth century, not only because of theircolonial architecture and cobblestone pavements, but due tothe calmness and luxury that you encounter when passing byhouses. In the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, in Congonhas, 12 prophets in soapstone retract the single touch of the local artist Aleijadinho. As for those who want an invigorating journey, go to Poços de Caldas. Known for its waters,in the city it is possible to take a bath or stroll through the fountains and waterfalls. For those seeking a bit of adrenaline, then you can go hang gliding and trekking in the Serra de São Domingos, where you can contemplate nature whilst having fun. And if you prefer avisitto the city, a good attraction is the cable car that leads up to Serra de São Domingos. When you go to Belo Horizonte, there are all kinds of excursionsto suitthe most varied of styles, because the city has significant national and even international influence, whether cultural, economic or political. It was the first planned city in Brazil and is marked by its quality of life and the hospitality of its residents. The mountains of Serra do Curral provide visitors with a breath-taking landscape. Known to be a blend of the traditional with the modern, the neighbourhood of Santa Tereza offers fun and good music. The bohemian neighbourhood became famous because artists used to meet, compose music and sing in Santa Tereza. The importance of the neighbourhood is such that it was the birthplace of one of the major musical movements of MPB, the Clube da Esquina, which emerged in 1960 and launched the singer Milton Nascimento’s career. At the heart of the neighbourhood is the Duque de Caxias Square, a lovely quiet environment to rest and watch shows. Founded along with the capital, the Liberty Square was originally designed to host the Government House and State Departments. Its environment is unique, with the presence of a mixture of various architectural styles such as the artdeco Palace, Christ the King or Oscar Niemeyer’s projects and the Public Library. It is a great to go jogging, have a picnic or just admire the scenery of the city landmark. The Arts and Crafts Museum offers a journey through time from the roots of the region. This cultural centre houses more than two thousand pieces from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, concerning the progress of arts and crafts of the country. Opened in 2005, it is the first and only museum in Latin America devoted to the subject. Being close to the Central Railway Station of Belo Horizonte, next to the Metro stop, it is interesting to note the contrast of the contemporary workers to the old ways of working. Everyone who leaves the state misses the local cuisine. The cheese bread is essential to accompany breakfast. But the trooper beans (feijão tropeiro), made with cassava flour, pork rind, sausage, eggs, onions and spices, is a dish that gives you enough energy to continue with the tours. 66 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

ith over 70 nationalities co-existing in harmony, the state of São Paulo is a superlative destination. The region has the largest population in Brazil, more than 43 million inhabitants distributed over 645 inner cities, besides also being the most diverse in Brazil, with more than 3 million descendants of immigrants, mainly Italian and Portuguese. There is also a strong influence of Amerindians and Africans - not to mention the Arabs, Germans, Spanish and Japanese. Due to this diversity, the state has many tourism options, offering a complete experience to its visitors. Although very popular with corporate travellers, who visit the capital on business and to participate in important conventions, the city of São Paulo offers a rich variety of entertainment. The city has more than 280 cinemas, 180 theatres, over 90 museums, 110 cultural centres and numerous nightclubs with diverse styles. Its nightlife is one of the busiest on the planet. Those who believe that the best beaches in Brazil are in the Northeast or Rio could not be more wrong. São Paulo also has beautiful places to experience sun and sand tourism. Located on Santo Amaro Island, about 84 kilometres from the capital, Guaruja is one of the most popular for young people during the summer and families wishing to enjoy the holiday on the beach. The 750-metre long beach at Guaiúba, is considered the most beautiful in the region but São Pedro Beach would dispute this. A 1290 metre strip of sand, the beach is within a condominium that has a natural pool and a waterfall. Surfing and other water sports, such as stand up paddle, kayaking and sailing also have their place here. Tombo Beach has rough seas and roiling waves. For those who enjoy fishing, go to Asturias Beach. Climbing, rappelling, zip lines, tree walking, rafting, hiking, trekking and creating your own adventure are what Brotas is all about. This area of extreme sports and nature is around 240 kilometres from the bustling state capital. The city is known for being a major tourist destination for ecotourism and adventure tourism in the country. Despite being a typical provincial city of São Paulo, it has an extensive infrastructure of hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. Called the “City of flowers”, Holambra is a little piece of Europe in São Paulo. The architecture, cuisine and culture are a reflection of the strong influence of Dutch colonization, whose customs and traditions have been preserved to this day. Another destination that reminds us of the European continent is Campos do Jordão, A very popular area during the winter period due to the low temperatures in the city. It is not just the cold weather that refers us to our distant neighbours, but also the half-timbered architecture that comes directly from the south of Germany. The city has strong gastronomic appeal. Fondue, wine, cheese and chocolates are some of the delicacies that are most consumed the most during the coldest season of the year. Not to mention the craft beers, like the traditional Baden-Baden, which is produced on site. A romantic destination by nature, Campos do Jordão also attracts many couples that snuggle by the fireplace to warm their relationship. 68 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

ome say that Espírito Santo is just a state that links Rio de Janeiro to Bahia. Some say thatEspírito Santodoes not have great leisure options, or a beautiful coastline like the rest of the country. But when you arrive in Espírito Santo you will realize what beautiful Brazilian nature the state has to offer and then you will realize that they were wrong! Afterwards, you will become enchanted by the beautiful beaches of Guarapari in the south of the state and by the historic town of Vila Velha. Espírito Santo is full of tourist possibilities. You must visit the beaches of Costa, Itaparica, Conceição da Barra, Itaúnas and Guarapari that have been attracting more and more tourists over the years. With over three million residents, the state takes advantage of the tropical climate of the Southeast Region to radiate various tourism opportunities throughout the year, whether in the leisure segment or in the business tourism sector, mainly, in the capital Vitoria, where you will forget that winter exists! Vitoria - In the state capital of Espírito Santo, business tourism was largely responsible for encouraging the improvements to the city’s service infrastructure, with the opening of new hotels and the construction of large restaurants. But business tourism hasalso been responsible for the increase in leisure facilities throughout the state, especially in the state capital Vitoria. There is nothing better than attending a conventionin a destination that can provide irresistible pleasures.
If you are looking for a bit of culture, all roads lead to Uptown (Cidade Alta). Founded in 1551, Vitoria still has some preserved buildings from this time. The tour – better onfoot – shows the Anchieta Palace; the church of São Gonçalo, in Baroque style; the Metropolitan Cathedral, from 1920 in agothic revival style; and the chapel of Santa Luzia, the oldest building in town. You will see as well the San Francisco Convent, the churches of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Rosary and the Carlos Gomes Theatre, which was inspired by the famous Scala, from Milan. Let’s now talk about gastronomy! The fishing tradition and heritage of the indigenous culture has deeply influenced the local cuisine, making it eclectic. Other influences are Portuguese, African and people from northern Europe. The Italians have had the greatest influence; they contributed anholini, tortei, pavese soup, risotto and polenta. People from Minas Gerais and Bahia also gave dishes like the péla-égua (pork cutlet) and vatapa. Among the most famous dishes areCapixaba pie and moqueca (stew), the crab muma and caranguejada. The internationally famous, moqueca (stew) is the best known dish of Espírito Santo. The name is a way of preparing food that consists of cooking without water, only with vegetables and seafood and, unlike the Bahian fish stew, the Capixaba does not use palm oil or even coconut milk. But the biggest difference of Capixaba cuisine is indeed the clay pot it is cooked in.

istory is certainly an important attraction for any destination. Brazil is known worldwide for its beaches, carnival and its friendly people. But there is more to the country then justthis; the country has a rich historyof political battles. In each region there are some historical facts to know. Brasilia, for example, was a turning pointas its inception that completely changed the political and economic scenario of the country. The capital of Brazil was an urban project, planned and built byLucio Costa, with architecture by Oscar Niemeyer. As part of the Constitution, the administration of Brazil was transferred to a city in the centre of the country and was inaugurated on April 21, 1960, by President JuscelinoKubitschek. Built on an area of flat land and in the shape of a plane, the city is acclaimed for its civic tourism due to its cultural heritage. One of them is the Army Headquarters, created as part of the architectural project by Oscar Niemeyer. It is a set of ten buildings that accompany a huge concrete structure

symbolizing the handle of a sword used by Duque de Caxias, who was an important Brazilian soldier that fought for Brazil’s independence against the Portuguese. Niemeyer also designed the Memorial of Indigenous People. Built in the shape of a spiral, it is a rich source of indigenous culture. You can learn about the history, culture and life of the Indians here, through lectures that are held by indigenous representatives from different Brazilian tribes. Another source of Brazilian culture is the National Museum of Brasilia, which houses temporary exhibitions of renowned art with important society issues. But Brasilia is not only about civic tourism. The city also has beautiful landscapes, which are in harmony with the urban scenery. In Pontão do LagoSul, the blue sky blends with the green of the trees and urban infrastructure, promoting a beautiful view of the lake. It is an excellent place for entertainment, because it has many restaurants and bars. November 2015

Brasilia is also divided by political motives. This is the Federal District where Brazil’s administrative centre is. It is composed of three independent branches: the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary. They are located in architectural buildings, true monuments that are worth visiting, such as the National Congress (Legislative), the Presidential Palace and the Alvorada Palace (Executive) and the Palace of the Supreme Court (Judicial). In addition, in the Federal District there is a tower known asCerrado Flower, the last project by Niemeyer who died a few months after the inauguration, in 2012. The tower is 170 metres high and is open to visitors. You can visit the low dome where there is a panoramic view. Another place to visit is the Mane GarrinchaNational Stadium, which has unique architecture, with Greek columns. During the stadium tour, it is possible to go down to the pitch side and the substitutes bench, walk through the tunnelwhere the teams take to the pitch and the team’s changing rooms. Those looking for Civic Tourism won’t be disappointed with the city. The Federal District has created thematic tourism routesspecifically for this public. There is the “Cerrado to ConcreteTour: Background to the capital’s construction”;“Master Plan Cruise Tour: The Urban Design of Brasilia”; “Brasilia’sFour Scales Tour: Urban Plan”; “Architecture and Integrated Arts Tour: Architectural Relevance”; “Monumental Trace Tour: Monumental Scale”; “Brasilia between Palaces and MuseumsTour: Cultural Tour”. Despite the territorial distinction, Brasília and the Federal District are very similar destinations with regards to the supply of tourism products. As well as Brasilia, the Federal District also has famous buildings and shares its concrete structures harmoniously with nature. Proof of this is the Botanical Gardens whose mission is to present visitorswith a taste of the Cerrado. In the Gardens, tourists can see typical vegetation and go on hiking trails. Another option to enjoy a bit of nature in the Saia Velha Waterfall, located within the ÁguasCorrentes Park, which combines the best of nature in a specially designed leisure area. nvironmental Conservation and wildlife are key words for visitors arriving in MatoGrosso do Sul. Its fertile land and respect for nature, attractspeople who are interested in ecotourism. The Pantanal, the symbol of the state, was recognized in 2000 by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, to be considered one of the most exuberant and diversified natural reserves on Earth. It is the largest floodplain in the world, and covers Brazilian, Paraguayan and Bolivian territories, covering an area of about 140,000 square kilometres. The South Pantanal, which refers to Mato Grosso do Sul, makes up two thirds of the Pantanal territory, and contains over 650 species of toucans, hyacinth macaws, capybaras, capuchin monkeys and storks, bird symbols of the region. Another city that offers tourism combined with environmental responsibility is Bonito. The tourist hub of the region was considered the best World Sustainable Destination for its control of tourists coupled with its care of nature. Lovers of extreme sports can rappel in Anhumas Valley down a vertical descent of 72 meters.
Pantanal
Known as Caminhos da Fronteira, the area is composed of nine cities, and six of them border Paraguay. The region has magnificent waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, hiking trails and great diversity of flora. The unique crafts, made from wood and bone that are sold in the city of Jardim, have made it to become known nationally and internationally. Among the forms of tourism that the city offers are ecotourism, with attractions such as Hole of Araras, Mysterious Lagoon and the Recanto Ecológico Rio da Prata. Another attraction of the region is its exotic cuisine. Capybara and alligator meat are offered roasted or stuffed with vegetables. If you are looking for a traditional meal from the Pantanal, the Quebra Torto is a good choice that unites pieces of dried meat and fried cheese balls. Try the piranha fish stock, a mixture of piranha cooked with cassava flour. It is considered as an aphrodisiac. Drink tereré, which is made with yerba mate tea and ice water. It is home toexhibitions and handicrafts. The Centre Fair of Campo Grande, which is near the train station, has Japaneseinfluences, people who emigrated en masse to the city in the early twentieth century. Full of kiosks, you can buy everything, from handicrafts to imported goods from Paraguay. Despite itonly being open on Wednesdays and at weekends, the movement is always intense. For those looking to see the artistic movements of the city, the Museum of Contemporary Art - MARCO is a good option. Created in 1991, it consists of approximately 900 works in various artistic forms of the MatoGrosso do Sul region. It is located in the Indigenous NationsPark, an extensive green area of the city set aside for leisure activities. And for those who want to experience the city in general, there is a City Tour around theMatoGrossodoSulstate capital. It lasts for 3h30 and departs fromMorada dos Baís house that is alsoa museum and information centre. The double-decker bus also passes through the Park of Powers and makes two stops: the Memorial of Indigenous Culture and the Museum of Cultures Don Bosco, both in the Indigenous Nations Park. Along the way, note the paintings and giant sculptures of typical Pantanal animals, made by the artist CleirD’Avila.
