We finished the difficult task of maintaining the high level set by London 2012, and received plaudits in the process. Now, more than ever, Brazil is prepared to receive more and more foreign tourists, especially the British. The idea is to resume the growth of tourists from the UK, a number that was increasing over the last four years – there were 149,564 in 2011 and 217,003 in 2014 - but the number fell in 2015, to 189,269. The leisure destination that is also the flagship of the country, recently, inaugurated a must-see attraction - the Museum of Tomorrow - that makes an excellent addition to the wonderful city. If you have been to Rio before, it’s worth coming back just to visit the museum. Located in Porto Maravilha, an area revitalized due to the Olympics, this imposing building refers to the values established for the event: the preservation of the planet. Newly opened, it was voted best museum in Latin America and received the Leading Culture Destination Award in London. According to the Brazilian Tourism Institute (EMBRATUR), British press highlighting Brazilian destinations have published several positive articles. This creates opportunities to expand the British public`s knowledge about Brazil. Not to mention the possibility of generating demand for little known destinations and potential interest by travel operators for product diversification. In addition to Rio de Janeiro, the whole country is waiting with open arms and is even more prepared and hospitable than ever before. In this edition, you will find articles with relevant information from the two main tourism boards in Brazil and tips on the main Brazilian destinations that will definitely please the British public. In addition to the traditional tourist sights, we have an extra section titled “Brazil beyond the obvious”. Enjoy! 4 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | WTM l London l November 2016

here is no doubt that Rio is the ‘picture postcard’ of Brazil for international tourism, but there is more on offer beyond its undeniable charms and beauties. The city is located in a state that has a reputation for the diversity of its attractions and geographical proximity. The major tourist cities are, at most three hours from each other, with easy access by tarmacked and well sign posted roads. Infrastructure is good and visitors have various options including international hotel chains, excellent cuisine, as well as ports and airports to make access easier. The highlight here is the diversity of its attractions. The options are divided between mountains and beaches. Besides the numerous natural attractions - which are spread over six tourist destinations - it is necessary to visit many historical destinations that keep alive the culture and traditions that are present in food, festivals and architecture. In the ecological sector, the State of Rio de Janeiro guards many treasures that stimulate adventure and ecotourism, all based on environmental preservation and sustainability. Bird watching, horseback riding and extreme sports are some of the activities that are possible in the mountain regions. Only a state like Rio de Janeiro can provide experiences like this that can exceed expectations with its unique beauty and diversity. he Green Coast (Costa Verde), in the south of the state, boasts more than two thousand beaches and 365 islands - one for every day of the year. The region entices tourists to lounge around lazily on the warm sand whilst listening to the relaxing sound of the waves. Formed by the cities of Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande, Mangaratiba, Paraty, Rio Claro and Itaguaí, the region was once considered as a landmark during the foundation of the country, having housed one of the first colonized lands in Brazil. As an expression of refinement on the Brazilian coast, Angra dos Reis is an almost mandatory paradise for lovers of natural beauty. Located 150 kilometres from the state capital, the city has a broad menu of resorts, hotels and guest houses, which offer various activities, including all day boat tours, nature trails along rivers and down rapids, as well as extreme sports such as abseiling, mountain biking and rafting. Ilha Grande, in turn, is known for being in one of the most beautiful coastal areas in the world. A fine example is the beach of Lopes Mendes, which has been in countless lists of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its popularity with tourists is due to the surrounding wild vegetation with almond and apricot trees and its crystal clear and transparent waters. The environment is completely deserted. There are no buildings, piers for mooring boats etc. therefore the beach remains quiet. Here, nature reigns supreme. Aventureiro is another special beach on the island. A small strip of sand plays host to a large coconut tree that, at some point in its life, grew at a different angle of 90

degrees. The tree is shown on local postcards. The beach has a gazebo and is a 30-minute trek away. From here you can have a view of the beaches and the surrounding forest, with its green palm trees, that add a fine mix of colour to the area. A fishing village makes up a harmonious setting, where friendly people are ready to receive tourists with warm smiles. The island is accessible by boat, with sails from Angra dos Reis, Jacareí and Mangaratiba. November 2016 l London l WTM | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | 7

In Paraty, located 245 km from the capital, beaches are wild and isolated, with access only by trail or boat. These characteristics give the impression that the place is secret. Antigo and Antiguinhos beaches, surrounded by green mountains, have soft sand and crystalline waters. In the historic centre, houses in neoclassical and baroque styles and cobblestone streets give a rustic feel to the area. With great infrastructure, the city has excellent hotels and various restaurants of varying cuisine. One of the most popular drinks is cachaça. The city also stands out for hosting the International Literary Festival of Paraty- FLIP, which attracts national and international celebraties every year. The fair is usually organized in the first half of July and promotes nearly 200 events, including shows, literature discussions and book readings.

esende, Itatiaia, Quatis, Penedo, Visconde de Mauá and Porto Real form part of the Region of Black Needles (Agulhas Negras), an exuberant mix of vegetation, waterfalls and paradisiacal sites with an interesting rock formations. Located in the center-south of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the region takes its name from the Agulhas Negras Peak, located in the Itatiaia Park. At 2791 metres, it is the highest point in the state. In addition to the Agulhas Negras Peak, the park offers many other attractions such as the Blue Lagoon, a natural lake formed by the river Campo Belo, the Bridal Veil waterfall, with a fall of 40 metres; Montanha do Couto Peak, the second highest point in the park, rising 2680 metres above sea level; and Prateleiras has rock formations with plateaus. In the region, two cities are mainly responsible for the heavy flow of tourists: Penedo (165 km from the capital) and Visconde de Mauá (200 km). The first, has a strong Finnish influence, which is reflected in its architecture and local culture. It stands out with its artisanal chocolates, rustic atmosphere and Nordic cottages. Fruit trees colour the streets and give a foreign air to the city. A popular tourist town, Penedo has good facilities, with hotels and restaurants that host their visitors masterfully.

Visconde de Mauá has a bucolic and welcoming setting for those who want to isolate themselves from the madness and frenetic life of the big cities. The variety of the natural scenery of Visconde de Mauá is an invitation to well-being. Through contact with nature, you can escape from your normal routine and do various activities that promote contemplation, like hiking, horseback riding, exploring waterfalls or swimming in rivers and extreme sports such as free flights, mountain biking and canoeing. The local cuisine is heavily fish based, with trout being the most popular and it forms the basis for many dishes in the local restaurants. On cold days, treat yourself to a fondue or one of the soups with varied flavours around the fire that is lit in the city centre.

destination 3 A journey through time with the and

aroma of coffee mountain wheater Framed by large farms of colonial and historic architecture, the Coffee Valley (Vale do Café) Region is a legacy left by the coffee industry, the main product of the Brazilian economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. In total, 15 cities form the region, with the most popular being Valença, Vassouras and Miguel Pereira. Besides being able to visit hundreds of farms, tourists can explore the houses of the coffee barons and the slave quarters, which are preserved but also tell the history and show the birth of the country’s culture. During the month of July, the region hosts the Café Valley Festival, a phenomenon that has music concerts on farms, concerts in public squares and supports music workshops for local children. Another event that is gaining more and more momentum is “Coffee, Cachaça and Chorinho”. With gastronomic appeal, the event includes visits to historic farms for tasting, like the colonial cafe morning, with many cakes, bread, milk and soft cheeses, where most of the products are produced on site. The Coffee Valley is an ideal as a retreat in rural tranquillity or for eco-tours. Miguel Pereira, just 115 kilometres from the capital, boasts waterfalls, small churches, rum and crafts. For its high mountains and hills, paragliding is a sport that attracts many visitors. Not to mention mountain biking, jeeps and the pentathlon, which also attracts many tourists due to the terrain of the area. For those traveling with a family, the Javary Lake offers pedal boats and small boat rides. Other attractions worth a look are the Railway Museum, the waterfalls of Vera Cruz and the Cachaça Museum. Be sure to taste the traditional tomato bread, a homemade delicacy that is only found in the region. Through its architecture, the history of the Coffee Cycle peak can be seen easily from Valença, a city located 148 kilometres from the state capital. All of the farms, cathedrals, parks, squares, monuments and houses, tell a little of the day-to-day lives of people that used to live in the region. The town has retained its traditions, its festivals and its customs from the golden coffee times. Among the main attractions are the Glaziou Garden, the Cultural Foundation Lea Pentagna and Vista Alegre Farm, which was one of the most important in the 19th century during the Empire. Close to the State capital, Vassouras - with palaces, houses, parks and gardens – here we can stop and go back in time. he region that once hosted the Portuguese royal court, Imperial Green Hills (Serra Verde Imperial) has a pleasant mountainous climate, which is why it has become the main refuge for locals seeking colder weather. That’s when many can take advantage of the stylish winter clothes and warm up by the fireplace. A nice glass of wine and a cheese fondue or, for the most romantic, a chocolate fondue with fruit. Shopping is also a popular in the region. Textiles and handmade delicacies are popular with almost every tourist who visits the region. With excellent hotels, the Imperial Green Hills is responsible for producing the most diverse types of

specialty beers, which harmonize perfectly with all that the State of Rio offers. The Brewery Route passes through the cities of Petropolis, Teresopolis, Nova Friburgo, Cachoeiras de Macacu and Guapimirim. In addition to the major brands, they also offer craft breweries that show a little of locals customs and culture. People love the drink. A good trip is to start in Nova Friburgo (131 kilometres from the city of Rio de Janeiro) and go to the Ranz, Rock Valley and BarĂŁo breweries. In the city centre, there is a plethora of shoe, clothes, handbags and makeup shops that can be found. Petropolis, founded in 1843 by Emperor D. II, was used to shelter the imperial family from the intense heat of the state capital Rio. Petropolis is only 59 kilometres from the city of Rio and offers a mix of heritage and ecotourism. Among the main attractions are the Imperial Museum, the Cathedral St. Peter of Alcantara, the Crystal Palace, the Quitandinha Palace and the house of Santos Dumont. On the outskirts, Itaipava stands out for its sophisticated aura and haute cuisine. Don’t miss a visit to the local breweries: Bohemia, Itaipava and Cidade Imperial. Colonised by Germans, Petropolis organizes the Bauernfest during the month of July. It takes its style from German festivals and features folk dancing, choirs, traditional bands (such as the Germanic Musical Band from Blumenau), beer contests, ethnic food and much more.

While Petropolis is the city of D. Pedro II, Teresopolis (which is 87 km from Rio) is the city of Teresa (Teresa Cristina, wife of D. Pedro II). Bucolic landscapes, street markets and charming restaurants are some of the characteristics of this city, which is full of charm. With attractions for all tastes, Serra dos Órgãos is one of the highlights of the region. Waterfalls, pools, trails and picnic areas are some of the attractions that the park offers. Easily accessible, the Soberbo Belvedere has one of the most impressive sights of the region. The peak Dedo de Deus (Finger of God) is a challenge for the more radical of tourists. Threedays, is the time it takes to walk from Teresopolis to Petropolis, trekking past waterfalls, different vegetation and other unique settings. Daniel Marcus

rom Guanabara Bay if you look to one side you can see the state capital, Rio de Janeiro, and to the other you will see Niteroi, a “sister city” that reveals a blue-water coastline, scenic views with breathless landscapes, centuries-old fortresses and architectural works of great historical and cultural value, designed by the greatest exponent of national architecture, Oscar Niemeyer. The former state capital is also an important economic, cultural and gastronomic centre. There, the beaches of Camboinhas, Piratininga, Itaipu and Itacoatiara are highlights. On the other hand, the bay beaches such as Icaraí, Boa Viagem, Flechas, São Francisco, Charitas, Jurujuba and Adão e Eva are great for walks and outdoor activities. If you love history, then you can’t miss the fortress tour, comprising the largest complex in the country. You will visit the Fortress of Santa Cruz da Barra and Fort St. Louis or Pico, from the 18th Century. Itaboraí, a city close to Niteroi, is popular for its cultural and historical significance. It has been the setting for novels and movies, especially in Marechal Floriano Square, formerly Matriz Square. It also boasts the largest stage in the city, where there are artistic and cultural events such as the traditional Festival of Kings and a Book Fair. It is in the historic city centre that is siècle building that resists time. Another relevant aspect of the city is the oldest paleontological site in Brazil, on the shores of São José Lake. Nature lovers should not miss the National Park Restinga de Jurujuba, one of the country’s protected areas administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). With a large number of on-going scientific research projects, the National Park extends over 44 km along the coastline between the cities of Macae, Carapebus and Quissamã. Its ecosystem brings together salt marshes, wetlands and the Atlantic Forest and there are more than 20 lakes. Campo dos Goytacases has always been synonymous with colonial farms, historic mansions and sumptuous manors. It is endowed with beautiful natural attractions like beaches, lagoons, environmental reserves, rivers and waterfalls. The main beach is Farol de São Tomé, 50 km long, where there is a 47 metre high lighthouse, which was opened in 1882, and is where the Environmental Protection Area of Lagamar was created. is found with its rich flora and fauna. Among its main attractions are the Desengano Peak, a 1,761m high mountain, the Mateus Peak, of 1,576 m, and the Pedra da Agulha. Casimiro de Abreu gained national fame in 1980 as a esoteric area, especially because people believed that an extra-terrestrial spaceship coming from Jupiter was going to land there. The city’s name comes from the poet and novelist Casimiro de Abreu and his house is now a museum with an auditorium, library, art room and small exhibition. The city has waterfalls and rapids on the Macaé River, where you can swim, go rafting and fishing. The best beaches are Praião, with greenish water, and Prainha, at the mouth of São João River. Make sure you include the city of Macaé in your itinerary. Known as the “Princess of the Atlantic”, it has gained international status due to oil production and the discovery of a Pre-Salt oil field off its coast. It has become known as the “National Oil Capital”. There are also historic monuments such as the Marechal Hermes Fort that originates from the 18th Century, Imbetiba Lighthouse, from 1880, and the Church of Sant’Anna, from 1896. The beaches extend along the 23km coastline. Highlights include Lagomar, São José do Barreto, Barra de Macaé, Forte, Imbetiba, Prainha do Farol, Campista, Pecado and the most famous, the Cavaleiros Beach. Quissamã stands by the warm, sweet and dark waters of Tatu’s Cove, one of the main natural attractions and the beaches of Farol and Barra do Furado are frequented by surfers. In the historic part, the Cultural and Historic Complex Fazenda Machadinha, created in 2009, is formed by the ruins of a big farm house, warehouse, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio and slave quarters. One of the highlights is the Memorial Machadinha. To see more details of the buildings, from the 19th Century, there is a tour that includes several historical attractions and monuments. de Pedras, made by slaves in the 18th Century, and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also built by slaves. The Whale Square (Praça da Baleia) is a leisure area where there is a sculpture of a 20m long humpback whale. In the Costazul Beach waterfront are some of the main attractions of the city such as the Pier, an ideal spot to watch the sunrise and go fishing. There are 28kms of beaches. Santa Maria Madalena is one of the entrance gateways to the Desengano State Park, with its great natural forest and waterfalls. It is definitely worth a visit to the stone craft workshops run by young locals and maintained by the Association of Mineral Producers of Santa Maria Madalena. Other attractions of the park are the Torre Lookout and Desengano Rock. There is also the ‘Way of the Cold Lands’ (Caminho das Terras Frias), a rural track with natural attractions organized by local producers that are very welcoming. The famous Brazilian comedian, Dercy Gonçalves was born here. Also, don’t miss Pedra do Dubois, Cachoeira do Escorrega, Cachoeirão, Represa da Tudelândia, Represa do Saudoso and Horto Florestal. Lagoons, white sandy beaches and deep blue colours of the sea, make up the region of Costa del Sol. There is plenty of sun, relaxation, peace and quiet, but also adventure and water sports. Among the 12 major cities that form the region are: Búzios, Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo and Rio das Ostras. From the state capital, roads provide easy access and wthin few hours you can enjoy the best beach towns.

With trendy shops, hipster bars, fine restaurants and international nightclubs, Búzios (170 kilometres from the state capital) is one of the busiest nights in the state of Rio de Janeiro. During the day, visitors enjoy the intense sun and relax by the sea. At nightfall, Rua das Pedras (Cobbled Street) comes alive. The most popular beaches are Geribá, Ferradurinha, Armação, Ossos, Olhos de Boi and Caravelas. November 2016 l London l WTM | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | 15

town. Attractions such as the Whale Square, the Bird Park (largest nursery in Latin America) and the Rocky Shores of the Natural Monument should be included in visitors places to visit. Rio das Ostras organizes one of the largest jazz festivals in Brazil, the Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival. The event, which lasts six days, is a gathering of the greatest jazz and blues musicians. The number visiting already exceeds 15,000 people a day (2013 data) and attracts tourists from around the world. Arquivo TurisRio

For surfers, a good tip is the small and well-preserved José Gonçalves Beach, where the waves are bigger. For those who want to escape the crowds that flood Búzios in high season, the beaches of Azeda (Sour) and Azedinha are more sheltered and quieter. The name comes from the colour of its waters, which are lime green. Access to Azeda Beach is by a street from the Ossos Beach. In the right corner there is a small trail that leads to Azedinha. Among the food options is seafood. Enjoy fish, oysters, mussels and shrimp, served in kiosks by the beach. Just 38 kilometres from Búzios, Arraial do Cabo also has its own areas of paradise. Unlike other beaches, the sea in Arraial is an intense blue. The temperature of the water is between 6o and 18o C and Arraial do Cabo and Cabo Frio have the coolest beaches in all of south-eastern Brazil, quite different from the average for the region, where the temperature remains around 20° C. Considered as the “most perfect beach in Brazil” by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Ilha do Farol (Lighthouse Island) attracts swimmers who also take advantage of the natural beauty by taking photographs. If the marine life makes your eyes sparkle, then you will be sure to enjoy yourself. Arraial do Cabo is also known as the Capital for Diving in the country. Among the best beaches for diving are Prainhas in Pontal do Atalaia and Grande Beach. Often, in January, it’s possible to see penguins on the edge of Grande Beach. The destination also offers boat trips, where you can get to the Azul Grotto or to Marinha Island. But beware: permission is required to access the area. Boasting 15 preserved beaches all with good facilities, Rio das Ostras is the ideal place to enjoy a little rest mixed with a hectic city. This is a little of what you can find on the west coast of Ceará, famous for idyllic scenery, which satisfy all kinds of tourists: adventurous young people, couples, families and newlyweds on honeymoon. The region has some of the most beautiful beaches of Ceará, such as Flecheiras, Icaraí da Amontada, Camocim and the famous Jericoacoara, considered as one of the Setur-CE

most beautiful beaches in the world. The destinations, further away from the state capital Fortaleza, are home to luxury options for those who want comfort and good services and there are cheaper alternatives like hostels and guesthouses. The multiple possibilities make the west coast of Ceará a mandatory destination for those visiting the state, be it for a backpacking trip through the region, or just to enjoy a relaxing holiday and watch the sunset.

Flecheiras

Located 130km from Fortaleza, Flecheiras Beach is an ideal place if you are looking for beauty and contact with nature. Considered as one of the least explored places of Ceará, the beach is surrounded by white sand dunes and palm trees, reinforcing the sense of tranquillity. The beach is in fact a cove, so the hotels are close to the sea and even offer bar service to guests on the sand. The long thin strip of sand is also an attraction and is suitable for walking and playing sport. One of Flecheiras attractions is the reefs that have helped form natural pools and are great for snorkelling. If you want a little more adventure then it is possible to go open water

diving. Rafts, with capacity for up to five people, lead to a coral bank, which is 500m from the coast. Strong winds in the area are also favourable to wind and kite surfing. Anyone visiting Flecheiras cannot fail to visit the beaches of Mandaú and Guajiru, which have beautiful natural scenery with a river and sea. Icaraí de Amontada Natural pools, beautiful coves and crystal clear sea on a coast that stretches for 24km. This is the setting that introduces Icaraí de Amontada to tourists as one of the most idyllic destinations in Ceara. It is located 220km from Fortaleza and until recently was unknown to the public, which helped to preserve the quiet fishing village’s appearance. The destination now has a more intense movement because of its strong winds, which attracts kite surfing lovers. Venturing to the dunes at the Sabiaguaba Lagoon and Lençóis Cearenses, the ponds here fill up in the rainy season (February to May). A tour of the area may also include the village of Setur-CE

Caetanos, which offers more community-based tourism, hosting tourists worldwide in fishermen’s houses and integrating them to the cultural life of the region. One of the prominent places is on the Moitas beach, the busiest in the region. Located 6 km from the village, the site concentrates most of the seaside gazebos and from there you can access the port on the Aracatiaçu River. For those interested, you can take a boat ride along the river to see the mangroves. A regular stop is a stall where fresh oysters are served.

Camocim

Considered as one of the most beautiful cities in Ceará, Camocim is also the largest along the state’s coast, with 62km of beaches. The destination has many leisure options due to its many natural attractions. Besides the beaches, the region is still home to lakes, ponds, dunes, cliffs, mangroves and coconut groves. The cuisine, which is heavily seafood based, is one of the great attractions of the region. As well as other destinations on the west coast of Ceará, the strong winds of the region also favour sports, such as sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Among the three most popular attractions in Camocim are: the Island of Love, the Tatajuba Beach and Barreiras Beach.

Testa Branca Island (Island of Love) A The Testa Branca (White Forehead) Island, better known as the Island of Love is one of the most famous destinations for those visiting Camocim. Recently considered a ‘Public Good’ of Ceará, the area has mangroves, dunes and beaches, and is visited by people crossing the river Coreaú by boat to enjoy swimming, hiking and skiing on the dunes. From the Island you can see the beautiful scenery of coconut trees, moored boats and houses by the sea, all contrasting with the blue sky as it is always sunny.

On the beach tourists can enjoy crabs and other seafood.

Barrinha Beach Located in a private area, 21km from Camocim, Barrinha Beach has a population of only 23 fishermen who inhabit the region with a vast existing area of coconut trees. The name “Barrinha” is derived from the existing reddish barriers (sand) on the beach. The formation gives a special tone to the area, mixing white and red sand and generating an incredible view for its visitors.

Tatajuba Beach On the border between Camocim and Jericoacoara is one of the most beautiful tropical paradises in the northeast, the Tatajuba Beach. Surrounded by white dunes, coconut trees and vast mangroves, the beach is part of a large area of environmental preservation. Here you will find Morro Branco, one of the highest dunes of Ceará. The beach area has 745 residents and 166 houses, divided between the villages of São Francisco, Vila Nova and Nova Tatajuba. From Camocim the route to Tatajuba can be done by sea, crossing the river Coreaú.

Merging daylight activities with nightspots, the city has excellent dining options, such as Mediterranean cuisine, pizza, regional cuisine, French, Italian, Indian-Vegetarian, Japanese, as well as cafes, creperie and handmade ice cream. Access can be achieved by car and bus. By the end of this year, those who decide to visit Jeri can also fly. The airport construction is being completed, which will decrease travel time from around four hours (by car) to about an hour.

Holed stone

Mangue Seco Located in a small village amidst the dunes, Mague Seco gains attention for its biodiversity. The area has a population of seahorses and other species. The Guriú and Mangue Seco communities live in this almost untouched paradise and to help preserve it they periodically receive information on the importance of preserving the natural wealth that they possess through the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).

Paradise Lagoon and Blue Lagoon

One of the most popular postcard views of Jericoacoara, the Pedra Furada (Holed Stone) is a large arch carved by the motion of the waves, located in the rocky region of Jericoacoara. The beach strip begins after the Malhada Beach, the first at the east of the village, out of the cove. The Rock Region stretches for about 2km of coastline, ending at Frade Stone. Once a year, the sun and the hole align creating a true spectacle!

Considered as two of the main attractions of Jericoacoara, the lagoons have crystal clear waters and hammocks that allow the tourists to lay in the water, becoming the most visited places of the city. They have excellent facilities, including toilets, fresh water showers, beach gazebos, guesthouses and restaurants.

Sunset Dune

Serrote

An obligatory stop for those visiting the city, the Por do Sol (Sunset) Dune is close to the town centre and provides one of the most spectacular views of the sunset. The dune is appreciated daily by dozens of people, including tourists and locals.

Formed by two small hills, Serrote is one of the few in Jericoacoara, which has an extensive green area. The hill is responsible for protecting the village from strong winds and sand from dunes. If you put Serrote on your itinerary you can enjoy a beautiful view, and a good walk.

Natal

Foto: Canindé Soares

Natal is well known as the city of sun, warm water, dunes and palm trees and has even received the title of having the Purest Air in South America by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The State capital of Rio Grande do Norte has one of the most beautiful coastlines in Brazil, which stretches for over 400km, as well as having hospitable locals that welcome tourists with open arms. These are some of the features of one of the main Sun & Sand destinations of the country. Among the unmissable tours is a visit to the largest cashew tree in the world and to see more than 20 beaches with paradisiacal landscapes of dunes and clear, calm seas. You also can’t afford to miss trying one of the most common dishes in the destination, the local shrimp. Deep in Natal’s history there are traces of Dutch and Portuguese colonization and it was a military base in the 2nd World War. The city also houses the second largest urban forest park in Brazil, The

Parque das Dunas

Dunes Park (Parque das Dunas), whilst also retaining the charm of a medium-sized city, offering comfort and safety to its visitors. Ponta Negra is the most popular beach in the city, it is good for swimming, has good hotel infrastructure with restaurants and a busy nightlife. Here you will find the famous Morro do Careca - a dune more than 100m high. It is currently closed to visitors for preservation purposes, but even from a distance, it is worth taking a photo. In the state capital Natal, there are several other attractions such as the Fortress of the Three Wise Men (Fortaleza dos Reis Magos), the initial landmark of the city - founded on December 25, 1599 and built in a star shape by the Portuguese colonizers. To get to know a bit of the popular culture, a visit to the historic centre, including the Alberto Maranhão Theatre, Cascudo Museum, Solar Bela Vista and Old Cathedral, is well worth it.

Pipa When visiting Natal, you will have the impression of being in paradise and words will not be able to describe all the gems on the famous Pipa Beach, in the city of Tibau do Sul, 85km from the state capital. Ecological diversity, almost deserted beaches frequented by dolphins and turtles, and a landscape made of dunes, cliffs and natural pools are just some of the attractions that can be found there. It is also perfect for surfing, buggy rides, boat trips and even horseback riding. The gastronomy, embroidery and crafts made with sisal, straw and clay are other highlights. Pipa was a popular place for hippies and surfers in the 1970s and became the favourite place for foreigners in the state, some even moving here. The area is primarily a haven of lush nature with unspoilt beaches, cliffs and rainforest reserves. The evening are busier due to the many bars and restaurants, several nightclubs and events such as gastronomic and music festivals. To survive a night in Pipa, you will need plenty of energy as the party lasts until sun rise. And the best thing about Pipa is that it is frequented by young people from around the world who enjoy the regional forrรณ as well as the techno music beats. In addition to Pipa, there are other beaches located in the city of Tibau do Sul, such as Cacimbinha, Madeiro Beach - considered the most beautiful - and Amor (Love) Beach. They form a set of variations to suit all tastes and styles. Afogados Beach is the point for surfing, with big waves, long sandy stretches, funky crowds, craftsmen and more. The observation deck that stands on its cliff adds an extra component to this trip through its nature. Praia do Amor

São Miguel do Gostoso Further north in the state, 110km from the state capital, is São Miguel do Gostoso, a paradise for sailors and wind and kite surfers. A curious sign at the entrance to the city reads “here we make it tasty”, which welcomes visitors to this quaint beach town that gained fame in the late 1990s and is now one of the main destinations for water sport lovers. Gostoso is exactly right at the “corner of the continent”, where it is said “the wind makes the curve” and that’s why the beaches, with small waves and strong winds for the entire year, have become a paradise for water sports lovers. The small fishing village is simple and easy and attracts tourists all year round.

If do not want to walk much, you can opt for motorcycle taxis or rent a bicycle. The short distances and the calmness of the streets make them easy to ride. Gostoso livens up when hosting events such as the Film Festival and the Jazz & Bossa Fest, It can also be quiet for those who prefer the peacefulness of nature. The Ponta do Santo Cristo Cove, the beaches of Xepa and Maceió are virtually uninhabited all year round, making the destination an ideal place for those seeking tranquillity and to have close contact with nature.

Galinhos Dunes, salt marshes, mangroves and, of course, beaches. These are some of the attractions that Galinhos - 166km from Natal - keeps for its tourists. The city takes its name from the large amount of dories (fish) in the waters of the region. In Portuguese, they are called peixe-galo which literally means fish-cockerel and Galinhos means “little cockerels”. With deserted beaches and unspoilt landscapes, the city has been emerging as a new tourist destination for those not just seeking sun and sand, but also piece and quiet. The most famous place in Galinhos is Farol (Lighthouse) Beach, which takes its name precisely because it is home to the Galinhos Lighthouse. At Capim Beach, due to the high salinity of the water,

it is possible to float. It is worthwhile experience that is hard to find at other beaches. Curiously, it also houses a wind farm. If you are lucky, you may come across this beautiful rare specie, the blue heron, which is common in this region. Among the most popular rides are the boat and buggy ones. Out at sea, it is possible to enjoy the clear water, but what really draw the visitor’s attention are the mangroves that are present in much of this region. It is a habitat for crabs and oysters. All this turns into a multi-coloured and unique setting when it meets the vegetation that is visited by white and blue herons; a true spectacle of nature. Foto: Ana Muller

Adventure Tourism Rio Grande do Norte is also famous for adventure sports. One of the highlights is undoubtedly the city of Patu, which has become known worldwide for practicing free flight, with several paragliding world records being broken here. The destination has one of the best conditions in the world for this sport and, each year, pilots from all over the world come to Patu in an attempt to get into the record books. The flying season is between the months of October and December. With your feet firmly on the ground, one highlight is the buggy ride, a real Rio Grande do Norte tradition. One of the routes is in Jenipabu and the feeling you get from going down the sand dunes at high speed is a unique experience. Seeing the beautiful landscapes of the state amid the sand that rises with the vehicle’s movement is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Rio Grande do Norte. In the water, a good tip is Barra do Cunhaú, where you can kitesurf and windesurf. Located about 80km from Natal, it has an extensive stretch of sand and, most importantly, calm waters. The same thing happens here as in São Miguel do Gostoso, which has constant wind and is considered one of the best places for these two sports in the world.

Hang-glider - Patu

A little more radical are climbing and rappelling in Serra Caiada, located approximately 70km from Natal. Experts rate the area as ideal for this kind of sport because of the geological formations. The hills are almost natural monuments due to their beauty. At a height of 285m, it is considered one of the oldest rock formations in South America, with its age thought to be about 3.4 billion years. And speaking of a very distant past, it’s worth visiting the areas that have preserved caves and cave paintings. In Apodi, there is the Archaeological and Paleontological Site of Lajedo de Soledade, with adjoining caves. In addition to the paintings - representing mainly macaws, parrots, herons, lizards and geometric shapes - you can still find fossils of some animals here. The other three sites that make up geosites of Geopark Seridó are Xiquexique in Carnaúba dos Dantas; Mirador, in Parelhas; and Carnaúba River, in Acari. Finally, for those who prefer walking amid nature, a good tip is a walk through the Serra de São Bento, just over 100km from Natal. There are several possible trails. Among the highlights are the Pedra da Mata, Tanque do Boi (recommended for beginners) and the Pedra do Cruzeiro, a little harder, but the beautiful view is worth it.

Religious Tourism October 3rd, a state holiday in Rio Grande do Norte, is dedicated to the martyrs of Cunhaú and Uruaçu. Residents of these two mills were the first Brazilians massacred on behalf of the Catholic faith, even during the Dutch colonial period. The monument in honour to the martyrs, in the metropolitan region of Natal, has become a tourist attraction and place of pilgrimage. The capital of Rio Grande do Norte’s anniversary celebrations go beyond religious festivals, which, by coinciding with ones in Natal, attract many visitors. The seasons of concerts and outdoor performances are interspersed with the patron saint festivities, Our Lady of the Presentation, Santos Reis, San Sebastian and Our Lady of the Navigators; all have a strong appeal for religious tourism. In the countryside, there are also great religious events throughout the year, starting with pilgrimages to Monte do Galo, in Carnaúba dos Dantas. July, in the Seridó region, is also known as

the month of Saint Anne, with festivals, especially in Caicó and Currais Novos. Musical performances, food and craft fairs draw crowds who have religious motivations. In Mossoro, the month of December is dedicated to the festivities in honour of the patron saint Santa Luzia. Santa Cruz is a university town, located 115km from Natal, in Polo Trairi, which became a compulsory tourist destination with the construction of the Shrine of St. Rita of Cascia. The statue of Santa Rita is 56m high, it is considered the largest Catholic monument, which makes it higher than the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro or the Statue of Liberty in the United States. The Alto de Santa Rita, a religious tourist complex, has a chapel, a room of miracles, auditorium, craft shops, event areas, cafeteria, bathrooms and parking. The statue of Saint Rita of Cascia will soon receive an extra boost with the construction of a cable car to Alto de Santa Rita. Foto: Canindé Soares

INFORMATION

Ministry of Tourism

Ministry of Tourism launches Brazil’s Sustainability Map In order to publicize sustainability initiatives across the country, the Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with BRAZTOA (Brazilian Association of Tourism Operators), this year, launched the Map of Sustainability within a program called Sustainable Tourism: Awarded Initiatives. The tool covers 56 winning initiatives and is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the initiative is a way to give greater visibility to those who look to sustainability as a differentiator for their business and to stimulate others to adopt the same stance. According to the Ministry, the main international operators in Europe value this type of initiative when selling their packages. The information is divided into four categories - economic, accommodation, institutional partnerships and sustainability in tourism. The ministry and BRAZTOA have been working for many years to disseminate social, economic and environmental sustainability practices in the Brazilian tourism industry. The map is an easy and intuitive tool that will allow everyone to learn more about work that has been done by tourism companies across the country. Accessibility - The inclusion of people with disabilities in tourist activities in Brazil has guided initiatives and projects developed by the Ministry of Tourism. Among them is the launch of the Accessible Tourism Guide. The collaborative site allows Internet users to evaluate the accessibility of hotels, restaurants and various attractions. The program database has about 530,000 registered establishments. With more than 456,000 visits registered on the site, the guide is also available as an app on Android, iOS and Windows Phone. Growth in spending with an improved image The expenditure of international tourists increased by 38% in August this year because of the Games compared to the same period last year. There were about 540,000 tourists from abroad during the period of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Out of the 6.3 million foreign tourists

34 | MERCADO & EVENTOS BRASIL | WTM l London l November 2016

that visited Brazil in 2015, 95.5% said they intended to return to the country. Of this total, 86.5% considered that the trip exceeded or fully met expectations. Among the factors that contributed to the high approval rating are: hospitality (97.7%), gastronomy (95.7%), accommodation (95.6%) and restaurants (94.7%). Data refers to a survey by the Ministry of Tourism released in September this year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the result contributes to projecting a good image of Brazil to the world and makes it a more competitive destination. Foreign visitors positively assessed infrastructure

and tourist services, especially airports, with 86.5% - a 16% growth compared to 2014. Taxi services, public cleaning, restaurants, and tourist information among other evaluated categories, also recorded growth compared to the previous year. This positive scenario usually tends to grow after major international events, such as the FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. Tourism is the tertiary sector’s activity that is fastest growing in Brazil and generates more than R$500 billion. The sector represents 9.2% of direct and induced GDP, employing currently more than 10 million people in the country.

Embratur

Embratur invest in the European market with new strategic promotions Participating at this edition of World Travel Market (WTM) - London, the Brazilian Tourism Institute (EMBRATUR), the body responsible for the promotional strategy of Brazil abroad, is initiating a series of marketing initiatives in order to take advantage of the increased visibility of the country after the Olympics. The games attracted, over three weeks, more than 540,000 international tourists. Among the planned initiatives is the relaunch of the website, Visit Brazil. The platform is being overhauled with a new and improved format with more information and interactivity in three languages - Portuguese, English and Spanish - with an emphasis on promoting 38 destinations and 130 attractions from the north to the south of Brazil. “This website is part of a digital strategy that enables us to expand our visibility abroad. We have 6,500 visitors per month and during a recent campaign we reached 720,000, while the national average is 65,000. Our next phase will be to expand to 13 languages including Chinese and Russian. In the near future we will offer distance training and marketing of various products. Thus the project will be finished”, Vinicius Lummertz, president of EMBRATUR, said. The launch’s event was held at Casa Brazil, a Federal Government venue located at Pier Maua, in Rio de Janeiro. “We want to keep the average rate of growth of international tourism at 7% and this is one more tool to promote our country abroad, taking advantage of the good image left by the Olympics”, Lummertz said. The president of EMBRATUR also said that it is necessary to open up the economy to attract foreign investors. “We are the first country in natural beauty and the sixth in culture. We are working to increase the influx of visitors. Our goal is to close the year with US$6.5 billion in foreign expenditure and to attract 6.6 million foreign tourists by the end of this year”. He recalled that the new website will undergo permanent updates. The platform presents relevant information about the destinations, accessibility tips, culture, cuisine, integrated routes, videos, photos and a space dedicated to climate, temperature and security. The tool also interacts with content from websites of state

benchmarked global tourism websites. Olympic Games

Vinicius Lummertz, president of Embratur and city tourism departments. To build this platform, the Institute researched national and international tourism trends, consulted travel agents and state departments, and

According to the president of EMBRATUR, it’s necessary to be aware of market opportunities and the UK should receive special attention. The increased visibility of Brazil due to the Olympics is one of the factors that the Institute will explore for its promotional actions in the European market. “Brazil was again a coveted destination due to the great visibility obtained during the Olympics when, possibly around 5 billion spectators may have had a broader and more detailed view, not only of Rio de Janeiro, but the country as a whole. Among the promotional strategies with the most distant destinations is the integrated tourism with Argentina. Lummertz has been in touch with Gustavo Santos, the Minister of Tourism in Argentina, to develop a joint working plan. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the two governments.

Economic Tourism Conditions of Brazil According to 2015 data from World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Brazil is in 44th place on a list of the 50 most visited countries in the world. Marcelo Vilela de Almeida, a teacher of Leisure and Travel from the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), said the scenario of Tourism in Brazil has never been overly optimistic. “The situation is not the most favourable. Political and economic instability continues rebounding and there will be no recovery in the short-term”. According to the academic, the creation of the Ministry of Tourism, in 2003, was an important contribution to the sector. However, over the years, it has lacked continuity in public policies. “Now, for example, the country has hosted the Olympics with an interim minister”, he criticizes. The political embarrassment adds to known problems, such as poor infrastructure, difficulty to train manpower appropriately and international promotions that do not bring satisfactory results. Last year, 6.3 million foreigners visited Brazil, 2% less than in 2014, when the FIFA World Cup took place.

The tourists who visited the country last year spent US$5844 million. The expenditure on outbound travel totalled US$17357 billion in 2015. Compared to 2014, the decline in the foreign exchange deficit was – 38.51%, from US$18724 million to US$11513 million. Companies The Annual Economic Environment of Tourism 2016 (PACET) survey, points out that the 80 largest companies of the tourism sector in Brazil had a total annual income of R$64.6 billion in 2015. Map of Tourism in Brazil The cost information site “HowMuch” produced two world maps with the size of each country represented by the importance of tourism to its economy. In 2014, according to the World Bank survey, Brazil recorded total expenditure of US$7.4 billion on inbound travel, a very low number compared to the first five: USA (US$220.1 billion), France

Expenses: Tourism Outbound

(US$66.8 billion), Spain (US$65.1 billion), United Kingdom (US$62.8 billion) and China (US$56.9 billion). Brazil was also behind countries such as South Africa (US$10.5 billion), Qatar (US$10.6 billion) and Mexico (US$16.6 billion). In outbound tourism expenditure, the order of countries has undergone minor changes: China (US$164.9 billion), United States (US$145.7 billion), Germany (US$106.6 billion), United Kingdom (US$79.9 billion) and France (US$59.4 billion). Brazil is among the 20 countries on this map, which means Brazilians spend much more abroad in relation to the amounts spent by tourists visiting the country. The delay in Brazil catching up with the rest can be seen as a business opportunity. According to the economist Mauro Rochlin, “investment in the sector is attractive because the growth potential is very large”. He believes that the visibility brought to the country by the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will help boost the number of international tourists.

NORTH REGION

Manaus Manaus is a city of contrasts, which unites exuberant nature with an industrial centre of high technology and is now a major economic and financial centre in the north of the country. One of the symbols of the city is the Amazonas Theatre, which stages of all kinds shows. The theatre is still a historical reference for the region, thanks to the time of its construction during the Rubber Cycle of the late 19th century. In the region, the majority of tours are made by boat, like the one to the iconic meeting of the waters of the Negro and Solimões rivers. You can also visit the Forest of Science, where it is possible to visit a piece of the Amazon rainforest within the city. Boating on the rivers and hiking in the jungle is for ecotourism lovers. The local cuisine and local crafts must also be enjoyed.

Parintins In this city is the Parintins Festival. In late June, a popular festival takes place, which is responsible for dividing the population into red, in honour of the bumbá Garantido ox, and blue, in honour of the Caprichoso ox. This show is a reference of indigenous culture. Also known as Paradise Island, Parintins has other attractions, such as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Amazon village, the beaches of Taracuera and Varre Vento and Serra de Parintins. Take a stroll past lake Macurany and bathe in the Uiacurapá river are also popular activities in the region, especially between August and February, when the riverbanks turn into beaches.

Presidente Figueiredo The city is known for its natural beauty and is called the Land of Waterfalls, due to the large quantity of this natural phenomenon in the region. Approximately 110km from Manaus, the city houses the Ecological Reserve “Waterfall Sanctuary”, an environmental preservation property guarding the beauty of the Amazonas nature. As well as visiting the waterfalls, visitors can indulge in adventure sports like hiking, rafting, tree climbing and exploring the caves of the region. Presidente Figueiredo is still one of the few cities that tourists can get to by car, although easiest access is made by boat. The region also offers tours on Lake Balbina with visits to the hydroelectric power station and other eco-tourism attractions.

Belo Horizonte The state capital, Belo Horizonte, is located between mountains, surrounded by waterfalls and smaller historic towns. Its main feature is the architectural heritage, which blends classical buildings and sinuous lines of Oscar Niemeyer’s designs. The local cuisine and unique crafts will make you fall in love with the Central Market, with its 450+ stalls, it offers a bit of everything to the visitor, such as local delicacies, handicrafts, clothing and accessories. Another must do, if you enjoy pleasures of the dinner table, is to have dinner at a local restaurant. The menu is littered with traditional recipes with local dishes like chicken with okra and beans (tutu) are delicacies that should be tasted and enjoyed.

Serra da Canastra Contact with nature is what Serra da Canastra offers its visitors. The nearby cities of Vargem Bonita, São Roque de Minas and Delfinópolis form part of the Serra da Canastra National Park, with an area of 1,978km². Adventure tourism is the main attraction here with a selection of tours such as hiking, canoeing, 4x4 tours, motorbike rides and rappelling, besides a visit to the source of the São Francisco River. However, what gains the most attention is its cheese production. Internationally awarded, the Canastra cheese is a local symbol with such intense demand that local farms and producers open their doors to tourists.

Tiradentes and São João del Rei The charming Tiradentes is a destination that, in addition to showing the history of the country through its colonial architecture, draws attention for being a region with important gastronomic and cultural festivals, such as the Mostra de Cinema Tiradentes, which awards local filmmakers, and the Cultural and Gastronomy Festival of Tiradentes, which shows the typical local flavour to the world. In the friendly São João del Rei, you will find the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, whose door design was made of soapstone by Aleijadinho. The church has baroque and rococo details.

Ouro Preto Considered as a heritage of humanity, Ouro Preto is home to the largest architectural ensemble of Brazilian baroque. It is present in churches, chapels and museums. Tours to the churches of St. Francis of Assisi and Our Lady of the Pillar are popular; the first has works of art by a big name in Brazilian baroque, Aleijadinho, and the second is decorated with more than 400kgs of gold. For those who would like to know more about the history of the country, the Conspiracy Museum is the perfect place. With more than 4000 pieces, the collection tells the story of what was behind the independence of the state of Minas Gerais, based on the American Revolution. It has lots of artistic and historical pieces, especially paintings and furniture from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. São Paulo São Paulo is a city where even the comings and goings of cars turns into a tourist spot - and a good one too! Just spend a few hours enjoying the alternative menu at the Mirante Nove de Julho restaurant, whilst watching the traffic on the avenue with the same name and the city’s stylish people who frequent the area. Another high point – quite literally - in the city is the Square of the Sunset (Praça do Pôr do Sol), in the famous neighbourhood of Vila Madalena. A good tip is to watch this spectacle of nature and then head to one of the dozens of bars and clubs in the area. Paulista Avenue alone gives a meaning to the slogan “Culture is the beach of São Paulo”. Here you will find the Itaú Cultural Centre, Ruth Cardoso Theatre and São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). And for a breath of fresh air, go to Ibirapuera Park that, apart from its nature, is home to museums and event venues.

Brotas and Socorro Known as the adventure tourism capital, Brotas is a destination that will liven up your trip. There are several tour possibilities that offer direct contact with nature. Here you can tree walk, there are ziplines and wall climbing. Water sports are also popular. Rafting can be done on the Jacaré Pepira river. Socorro city is closer to the mountains and offers its visitors climbing and jumping points for hangliders. Pedra Bela Vista is the biggest place to rappel in the city. Descending for 98 meters allows tourists to enjoy the panoramic views of the area. Socorro is also a reference in accessible tourism.

North Coast Surrounded by the greenery of the Atlantic Forest and the beautiful green sea, the north coast of São Paulo is popular with Brazilians and tourists from around the world. Ilhabela is the city that gains most attention, with its 42 beautiful beaches and over 150 waterfalls; the island is suitable for those looking for ecotourism. Another beautiful city is Ubatuba, which is highlighted by the Cedro Beach. Located 22km from the centre, it is deserted and ideal for those who want to relax or scuba dive.

Mantiqueira Located among the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, the Serra da Mantiqueira is unforgettable. In Tupi, the word “Mantiqueira” means “raindrop”, which explains some of the importance of it for the region, since it is a source of drinking water; it is also important for the formation of rivers that supply a large number of southeastern Brazilian cities. Among the most visited cities is Campos do Jordão, located in São Paulo state. It is best known for its low temperatures, the city is a great destination for families and couples. Another tourist attraction is the international festival of classical music that takes place every year. Read more: Capital: São Paulo Climate: Humid subtropical Website: www.spturis.com Mantiqueira

Mato Grosso do Sul With abundant vegetation amongst its 357,000km2, the state is considered a benchmark in eco-tourism and has also won the title of one of the top ten destinations in the world for sustainable tourism. The state capital, Campo Grande, houses the Memorial of Indigenous Culture, a cultural centre located in the Urban Indian Village of Marçal de Souza.

Bonito The city was the 2013 winner of the World Responsible Tourism Awards. The award is recognized and appreciated worldwide. With the nickname “Brazilian capital of ecotourism”, Bonito has 33 attractions that are part of the official tour of the city and do not require any prior experience. Floating on the rivers is among the most sought after attraction. The two main options are the Sucuri River and the Prata River. It is possible to dive here and go animal watching amongst the rich flora and fauna or why not try them both as they have their own characteristics. The Sucuri is considered the most crystalline river in Brazil, as the visibility reaches 15 meters. But the Prata River is the best place for fish spotting due to the sheer quantity - from traditional pacu and piraputangas to spotted sorubim and jaw characin, and a multitude of small minnows. If you like contemplating nature, then, in addition to the floating on the river, a good idea is to take a trip to the Hole of Araras. This is a huge 100m deep and 500m wide hole. It is the habitat of hundreds of scarlet macaws and other birds native to the region. The flock of macaws is really a very beautiful sight, especially between the months of June and September, when it is easier to watch them. The caves are the symbols of the city, therefore, a must visit. The Blue Lake Cave has a breath taking view. After a descent of 290 steps and 60 metres, it is possible to see a beautiful lake of crystal clear water, which appears blue, but actually the colour is the effect of the sun’s rays that penetrate the opening of the cave. The geological formations are also attractions as they are millions of years old. Another very interesting tour is the Cultural Route, which passes through the Claudio Santoro National Theatre - a spectacle of rooms with an art gallery - and the Cultural Centre Marcantonio Vilaca, in the Museum of the Federal Audit Court. There’s even a beach called Praia dos Ingleses (English Beach), with five kilometres of blue waters with an average swell and good infrastructure. Rosa Beach

Another beach that stands out is Rosa Beach, in the municipality of Imbituba, recognized by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Two and a half million tourists worldwide visit the destination annually. The Iguaçu Falls deposit about 1.5 million litres of water per second, during normal weather conditions. But this volume ranges from 500,000 litres in the dry season to 6.5 million litres during times of flooding of the Iguaçu River. There are 19 major falls, three of them in Brazil and the others in Argentina. The views to these 16 waterfalls are spectacular from the Brazilian side. One of the most impressive falls is the Devil’s Throat, which is a deep rift caused by erosion, where huge amounts of water plunge thunderously downwards. It is nearly 85 meters high and its shape resembles a horseshoe.

Itaipu Accounting for nearly 20% of all electricity consumption in Brazil and over 90% of Paraguayan consumption, Itaipu is huge in every way. The world’s largest in volume of electrical power generation, Itaipu is a dam stretching 7,919m and reaches a maximum height of 196m, which is equivalent to a 65 story building. The dam opened to visitors in 1977, whilst construction was still on going, since then, the Itaipu Dam has received about 16 million visitors.

Tours Macuco Safari: Have you ever thought of being part of one of the seven most beautiful landscapes on the planet? Or be in a boat under one of the falls and take a quick shower?
