From San Pedro, Laguna to the world, this is the real Cinderella story of Charice Pempengco. The legend continues to live on long after his death.

One of the most successful contemporary Christian music artists, Chris Tomlin, singer-songwriter, gave us the No. 1 song, ―How Great is Our God‖, and there is no stopping him from proclaiming the Lord through his songs.

Three high school buddies loved music and praised God, and for the past 24 years they been making beautiful music for the Lord through Bukas Palad.

The founder of the Franciscan Order lived an altruistic life. He prayed for God to grant him the treasure of sublime poverty, the path that Jesus paved for us all to attain salvation.

From the Editor: A new year is about changes. Look at yourself in the mirror – and you will notice changes. I have. I once had long curly hair; but I have accepted the fact that most of those are gone; and I have joined the company of James Taylor, Billy Joel and Paul Simon who have extended forehead. People are bothered so much about aging that some of the biggest industries in the world today relate to anti-aging, and physical and mental wellness. Plastic surgery is no longer the strict territory of glamorous stars as demand for such have brought prices reasonable enough for the growing middle class. While a good number of individuals spend a fair amount of money for a “retuki”, how many spend time to re-evaluate their lives in the New Year? Since my high school years, I have made it a point to go through a Self-Realisation Program at the start of each year. I look back on what I have accomplished and failed in the year past; and draw out a plan of what I want to happen in the incoming year. I’ve initiated this program in my family more than a decade ago, and we’ve had wonderful sharings about how our lives have been and what our aspirations are. Companies conduct strategic planning; is not life more important to set out one’s vision? This New Year can begin in this manner: Sit down for a moment, get a pen; write on a clean sheet of paper what you want out of your precious life; and set out doable plans. You’ll be glad you did. Happy New Year! Love Peace and Harmony, Bro Mel B Libre

Nobody bothered so much about the petite girl with a big voice from San Pedro, Laguna. In 2005, thirteen years old Charice Pompengco was eliminated during her first performance in Little Big Star a talent show in the Philippines loosely patterned after American Idol. But the producers must have seen something as she was called back as a wildcard contender, where she earned third place based on text voting. It was her biggest break then, as she had competed in almost a hundred singing contests starting at the age of seven. The third place finish did not give her outright claim to fame though. She made do with appearances here and there, but nothing big. Except that one avid fan, under the username FalseVoice, truly believed in her talent. The admirer posted a series of performance videos of Charice in YouTube – and that brought Charice to a worldwide audience that numbered in millions. Before Justin Beiber, actually there was Charice. (The two met during the launch of her album in The Oprah Winfrey Show.) From there on, the Cinderella story started to unfold. Ellen DeGeneres invited her to sing in her show in December 19, 2007. She caught the eye of Oprah Winfrey who invited her for the first time on May 12, 2008 and two more times the last on May 11, 2010 during the launch of her single, ―Pyramid‖, a song that reached no. 1 in the Billboard Dance/Club play songs charts. If that was not enough, her international debut album sold 43,000 records in its first week, reaching #8 on the Billboard 200, a first for any Asian music artist. If there is one thing going for Charice is that there are people who come into her life at the right moments; and she delivers more than what is expected. (She brought Oprah Winfrey to tears as she performed ―Note to God‖) Not only has she impressed Oprah, so have David Foster (producer of such artists as Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble and Josh Groban), Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, to mention a few. As she is learning more about music, her mentor David Foster has taught her about philanthropy as well. David Foster opened the door for her to use her talent to help the less fortunate. The list of CORD Vol 1 No. 3 January 2011

charity events that she participated includes among others, Harmony with David Foster & Friends Gala and Concert (September 2008), Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Gala (December 2008), Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night (March 2009 and 2010), and Andre Agassi's 14th Annual Grand Slam for Children (September 2009). She used her fame to address the needs of her country as well. She sponsors the education of seven children through World Vision Philippines and is a supporter of Bantay Bata. She joined other Filipino artists in a commercial for ―Ako Mismo‖, a non-political movement that encourages youths to participate in socio-civic activities. She helped launch an environmental awareness campaign with Hewlett Packard Philippines under their "My Backyard" initiative, and lent her voice in the 30-artist song, ―Kaya Natin ‗To‖ to raise funds for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. In December 2009, Charice became Operation Smile's International Youth Ambassador. Award winning songwriter Diane Warren (LeeAnn Rimes‘ ―How Do I Live‖, Aerosmith‘s ―I Don‘t Want to Miss A Thing‖ and Celine Dion‘s ―Because You Love Me‖) said of Charice‘s performance of ―Note to God‖: ―Wow, you proved way beyond what I hoped for. That was an amazing performance. Beautiful.‖ David Foster was overwhelmed, ―In my world, this only happens two to three times probably in my lifetime. And I work with a lot of people. So, this is one of those two to three moments… she just sings so beautifully.‖ More so that the song resonated in the heart of Charice, a barrio lass who never lost hope against all the odds: Grant us the faith to carry on/ Give us hope when it seems all hope is gone/Cause it seems like so much is going wrong/ On this road we're on.‖ The road that she is on now will lead her to a part in the popular TV show, Glee, and that sure is a long way from San Pedro, Laguna. Glee star Lea Michelle says of Charice, ―she‘s the tiniest, the most [sweet] person I‘ve ever seen in my life.‖ What kind words from her ―rival‖ in the show. Add to that the BillBoard magazine‘s no 4 ranking of the ―21 under 21: Music‘s Hottest Minors‖ list, after Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. From amateur singing contests in San Pedro, Laguna to Glee - the little star has taken a big leap Note To God (Diane Warren) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Xd435coD4 Intro: A-AM7 A If I wrote a note to God AM7 I would speak what‘s in my soul DM7 I'd ask for all the hate to be swept away,

If one walks along the streets of Las Vegas, there is a good chance of an encounter with Elvis Presley, not the real one, but impersonators who make a living as performers emulating the rock ‗n roll king in every possible way. Why do people bother to be Elvis-like? Wikipedia provides the answer in this manner: ―He is regarded as one of the most important figures of 20th-century popular culture. He had a versatile voice and unusually wide success encompassing many genres, including country, pop ballads, gospel, and blues. He is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music Nominated for 14 competitive Grammys, he won three, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36. He has been inducted into four music halls of fame.‖ Elvis historian Marty Jezer who explains the impact of Presley on his generation and those that followed: ―As Presley set the artistic pace, other artists followed ... Presley, more than anyone else, gave the young a belief in themselves as a distinct and somehow unified generation—the first in America ever to feel the power of an integrated youth culture.‖ In a way, he defined youth empowerment – the young embracing their individuality and making an impact upon society. Presley did not know the impact of his music style, but when pressed to respond to criticism that what he was doing had negative impact on the youth, he responded, "No, I haven't, I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. ... I don't see how any type of music would have any bad influence on people when it's only music. ... I mean, how would rock 'n' roll music make anyone rebel against their parents?" Actor James Dean gave the youth a name, ―Rebel without a Cause‖ which of course was a misnomer. While this empowerment led to the psychedelic and liberal hippie culture, it also brought forth young people to worthy causes like the civil rights movement and the anti-war protests. In our times, terms like ―smartest kids‖, ―child geniuses‖ and ―youth leaders‖ have become common for there are those among the young who have demonstrated abilities, values and maturity beyond their age. Sadly, media gives more time and space on antics of the wayward teenage celebrities or the folly of youth offenders. There have been accounts of young people saving other‘s lives, of young people inspiring others through good work, of young people leading causes to make the world a better place to live in. An Irish Proverb tells: ―Age is honourable and youth is noble.‖ For the youth looks at life with a positive outlook, with idealism. The Bible says, ―Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.‖ (1 Timothy 4:12) For truly we can learn from the young; as we the more mature can impart to them the struggles CORD Vol 1 No. 3 January 2011

that we fought when we were young ourselves, the dreams that we continue to aspire for, for ourselves and for our children. General Douglas McArthur puts it so wisely: “People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up interest wrinkles the soul. You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope as old as your despair. In the central place of every heart there is a recording chamber. So long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer and courage, so long are you young. When your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cynicism, then, and then only, are you grown old. And then, indeed as the ballad says, you just fade away.‖ Elvis had long left the world. Let us pray for him to rest in peace, as we cherish his music, as we celebrate his life, and we remember what he stood for – that you and I are forever young. A well-travelled author once wrote about hearing familiar voices singing like angels in different churches around the world – and he knew right away that the people composing the group were Filipinos. The chances of any of the following songs being sang by any of these groups is 99%: "Hindi Kita Malilimutan", "Tanging Yaman", "Sa 'Yo Lamang", "Anima Christi", and "One More Gift.‖ These religious anthems are products of three high school buddies from Ateneo de Manila University High School, Norman Agatep, Jandi Arboleda and Manoling Francisco, with the latter pursuing the path of priesthood by joining the Society of Jesus. After the release of their first album entitled Bukas Palad in 1986, the three nurtured a group named after album whose vision reads, We, Bukas Palad, are a Catholic Filipino music ministry, bound by our faith in God, passion for music, and dedication to serving others. Inspired by the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, we strive to become co-creators with God in building a world of justice, peace, hope, and love by writing, performing, and propagating original liturgical and inspirational music. Nearly 25 years old, the group continues to compose and record new songs. It performs in concerts, sings in masses and weddings, and conducts reach out programs, i.e., free choral workshops. The songs of Bukas Palad have touched the hearts of many Filipinos that movie producers have cashed in on the titles, bringing new meaning to the compositions. Bukas Palad released a new album, Christify, in August 2010, as a lead towards the 25 th anniversary of the formation of the group. If there is one reason that the group has continued through the years, it is consistency: for the members meet every Tuesday and Thursday night, after dinner, at the Sonolux bldg. at the Ateneo de Manila University. They observe a process – vocal rehearsal, logistical concerns and business meeting. All these they do to make beautiful music as an offering to the most important audience of all – the Almighty God. MUSIC + Current. “Ar scath a cheile a mhaireas na daoine," an old Irish proverb that translates to "It is in the shelter of each other that the people live," inspired Jars of Lay in creating their latest album, Jars of Clay Presents the Shelter‖ that entered Billboard‘s Top Christian Albums at No. 5 on its release in October 5 2010. Spearheaded by Jars members Haseltine, Matt Odmark, Charlie Lowell and Stephen Mason, the album is a collaborative effort including guest vocalists Brandon Heath, Audrey Assad, Mac Powell, Derek Webb, tobyMac, Matt Maher and Amy Grant. Lead single "Out of My Hands" features Mike Donehey and Leigh Nash. The whole concept truly hit home when Haseltine's and Odmark's homes became flooded. "Matt and I both had some pretty good water damage," Haseltine says. "There are a range of emotions when you are watching water pour into your house, and you don't know how deep it's going to get or how much damage it's going to cause. 'How safe are we? Is my family OK?' All these things run through your mind. In the end, people came and took care of us. Churches brought care packages, boxes of food and other things." An engineer waded into a flooded studio to save the album, retrieving all the hard drives and other related items. "Or else we would have lost the record entirely," Haseltine says. "So it was an act of courage and an act of community that even allowed the record to exist."...On October 9, 2010, people around the world marked the 70 th birthday of the late ex-Beatle John Lennon with memorials and music. Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow and the guardian of his commercial and musical legacy, will lead the tributes from Iceland, where she will light the Imagine Peace Tower in memory of Lennon and perform with their son Sean. In the singer's birthplace Liverpool, Lennon's first wife Cynthia and their child Julian are expected to unveil a monument dedicated to the artist and funded by the Global Peace Initiative involving young artists. In the US, Nowhere Boy, a film about Lennon's early years before he found fame and fortune with the Beatles, was released. The documentary LennonNYC was screened in New York, where he was killed on December 8, 1980. Earlier, Yoko Ono kicked-off by appearing at NAMM, the international music products association, to show her support of music education. Quincy Jones and Jackson Browne joined her at the press conference in Anaheim, California. As one half of the key song writing axis in the Beatles alongside Paul McCartney, Lennon was responsible for much of the band's catalogue, including seminal hits like She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand and A Hard Day's Night..On November 15, 2010, Josh Groban released his latest album, “Illuminations” produced by Rick Rubin, who had previously work with Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash. Groban, under the guidance of producer David Foster, brought classical singing to pop culture with the anthemic, ―You Raise Me Up‖ and his most recent album, the 2007 Christmas record "Noel," sold 5 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and topped the Billboard 200. Groban co-wrote more of the material than he ever had on previous albums, and also recorded a song with rock guitarist Nick Cave... Fervent Records' hot debut artist Chris

An outspoken voice for pro life, the Australian born singer, now living in the U.S, has dedicated a large portion of her time this year to a series of special appearances and support events for Crisis Pregnancy Centers throughout America. St. James' 2009 starring role in the film, Sarah’s Choice, impacted audiences with her moving portrayal of a young career woman pregnant outside of marriage and faced with the decision of the life of her baby. Since its release the movie has been used by CPC Center‘s nationally in their pro life messaging to young women facing the real life issues presented in the film... BEC Recordings’ artist Jeremy Camp was honored in November 2010 with the ASCAP Songwriter / Artist of the Year Award at the 32nd Annual ASCAPChristian Music Awards in Nashville, TN. The 50,000 plus audience at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland wasted no time, jamming to the rhythmic noise that energized the huge stadium as the high-speed power rapping Jay-Z delivered one anthem after another highlighted by “Forever Young” and “Empire State of Mind”. But then, this wasn’t the Jay-z show, but that of the Irish band U2, 360˚ Tour, actually one of the most successful in their career, earning $130 million in 12 months as of July 2010. The countdown of the band’s entry had David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” dominating the stage, as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. marched on stage immediately rocking the air with “A Beautiful Day” though it was freezing cold. The hypnotic presence of U2 brought the temperature degrees much higher reaching its first peak in “Elevation”. Then the band segued with “I Still Haven’t Found what I’m Looking For”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, a few new materials and dedicated the poignant “One Tree Hill”, a song taken from a landmark in Auckland, to the 29 miners who recently died in one of the worst mining disasters of New Zealand in decades. That was the second summit reached.

Soon, the uniquely designed stage dubbed as The Claw, seemed to launch the whole stadium up into the sky with dazzling lights, white smoke, and psychedelic images with such hits as “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. Bono called Jay-Z back and they joined forces in two songs, including a shout out, “Rejoice” that celebrated the release of 1991 Nobel Peace awardee Aung San Suu Kyi release by Burma’s military regime.

When we thought that the high-octane gig was at its end, the image of South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutuappeared on the large screen. He talked about the serious Aids epidemic that has killed millions in Africa, followed up by Bono rendering an intimate version of “Amazing Grace”. With the audience clamouring for more – the band gave them what they wanted hit after hit, including “One” and the timeless “With or Without You”. It is amazing how U2 has withstood the changes in music taste through 30 years since the band’s first album, “Boy” was released in 1980. Many of its contemporaries in the new wave era like Wham!, Culture Club, The Human League, Depeche Mode, a-ha, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, and the Pet Shop Boys are mentioned in the past tense, while U2 remains relevant and continues to produce new songs for today’s generation. While Bono is the poster boy of the band, with his beautiful and expressive voice and the patented hiccup, and enhanced by the simple, yet unique guitar leads of The Edge, the four-man band is a tight musical unit, with a conscience. The politically charged “Sunday Bloody Sunday” was no gimmick, as decade in decade out U2 delivers social commentaries through rock music. Then it hit me, when one of the songs played aloud prior to concert: John Lennon’s “Power to the People”. Lennon remains to be relevant, because he brought truths through songs, he sang about the universal desire for love, peace and harmony. Yes, John has long left us, and good enough, we have U2 that has taken the cudgels for worthy causes. As the band left the stage with knowledge that they’ve given a great time to the audience, the Claw landed back on earth, with Elton John’s “Rocket Man” blaring aloud. Whew, what a ride! DESIDERATA Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Human beings are generally ―I-Me-Mine‖ oriented. We tend to think that the world revolves around us; that the self is above all else; and that selfishness is a virtue. Ayn Rand, author of the novel Fountainhead, views selfishness as ―a serious, rational, principled concern with one's own well-being, it turns out to be a prerequisite for the attainment of the ultimate moral value‖. She concluded, ―Selfishness is a virtue.‖ Gordon Gekko, the main character in the movie, Wall Street, declared, ―Greed is good‖. This quotation transformed real people, such as Bernard Madoff, into defrauding others in schemes that fleece others of their hard-earned savings. Greed, a by-product of selfishness, brought about the near collapse of the US economy in 2009. Until the present, the peoples of the world continue to suffer as a result.

Feastday: October 4 Patron Saint of Animals, Merchants, and Ecology b.1181 d.1226 Founder of the Franciscan Order

The opposite of selfishness is altruism defined as the ―selfless concern for the welfare of others‖. As Wikipedia puts it, ―Pure altruism is giving without regard to reward or the benefits of recognition and need.‖ One example of altruistic life is that of St Francis of Assisi. He said: ―Grant me the treasure of sublime poverty: permit the distinctive sign of our order to be that it does not possess anything of its own beneath the sun, for the glory of your name, and that it have no other patrimony than begging.‖ The founder of the Order of Friars Minor (OFM), more commonly known as the Franciscans, took to the letter Jesus‘ call to discipleship: “And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse.” (Mark 6:8) St Francis also said, “Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ gives to his beloved is that of overcoming self.‖ At first people in Assisi thought St Francis as mad, for he dressed in rags, walked barefoot, and turned to begging; but when they saw that he not only preached, but also lived the Gospel, they believed. He even moved Pope Innocent III who personally permitted him to found a new religious order. Through the centuries, St Francis inspired many to join the order he founded, not only following his example of austere living, but also, sacrificing their lives to spread the Gospel. OFM reached its peak of membership at 26,000 members in the 1960s (current: 16,000), while other related congregations consist of equal, if not more members. There are those among us called to the religious vocation; but majority remain as lay brethrens. Religious or lay we are called to follow the selfless example of Jesus Christ. “Calling the crowd to join his disciples, [Jesus] said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)

Climbing Out of the Mess (Published on January 11, 2010) Benjamin Franklin once said, ―Be always at war with vices, at peace with your neighbours, and let each new year find you a better man.‖ It is a tall order for every human being to succeed on all fronts, for vices can be well entrenched, neighbours can be testy and a new year can be worse than the previous one. If we allow the world to dictate, then climbing out of the mess that our lives may have fallen into can be difficult. There was this man who had a son born out of wedlock. His luck went from bad to worse when his son died in a vehicular accident. As an escape from all his woes, he indulged in alcohol drinking, wasting his life and dying as a result of the vice. On the other hand, I had a close friend who indulged in smoking marijuana in his younger days. His father brought him to a rehabilitation centre allowing him to turn his life around. He became successful in many things including disc jockeying, advertising and wellness programmes. Kicking a bad habit can be very difficult. One has to declare a war against it; and win battles one step at a time. It all starts with identifying and accepting the bad habit; seeking help when it is beyond self therapy; pursuing an alternative use of time and energy; and working forward to becoming a better person. While the decision to put an end to vice is personal, the battles must be fought with loving support from family, friends and therapists. They are the infantrymen that get the enemies hiding in the trenches. Most importantly, you must have faith in God who is the chief strategist against Satan who is the real enemy. As Jesus replied to Peter‘s concern on a withering fig tree, “Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.‖ (Mark 11:22-24) Once you have conquered the vice that once controlled your life, then you will have a better understanding of yourself, leading you to realise how special you are in the universe. From then on, you can attain peace in yourself that leads to having peace with your neighbours as well. Not only will you become a better man in the eyes of people, more importantly you can be the better man God created you to be.

The Rooster whose Crow was a Bleat* The first rays of sunlight crept in the mountain near Umahan. One solitary creature flew swiftly towards the roof of the farmhouse. Father Rooster, precise and on time, positioned himself in the best location where the entire farm could be seen. He flapped his wings. Moving his head towards the sky, Father Rooster loudly announced, “Tok-To-Ga-Ok!” The crow signalled to Farmer and all the animals of the coming of a new day.

For Mother Hen, this new day was a special one. She expected the dozen eggs she had warmly cared for weeks to bring forth twelve pretty little chicks. And the eggs cracked one by one – one white chick after another. Except for one egg. As the white chicks swarmed around her, Mother Hen remained on her nest to give warmth to the last egg. It took one more day, until the egg cracked. Mother Hen and all the eleven white chicks looked intently at the egg, as the head of the last chick came out. All, except Mother Hen, were surprised as the new chick had brown feathers. The chick had the color of Father Rooster. Mother Hen paraded her dozen brood in Umahan. She toured them around the farm. She called them when she found food. She warned them about predators. She taught them to jump, to scratch, and to flap. During the evenings, she would place them under her body to provide them warmth, protection and love. Brown chick was sad though. While Mother Hen took care of him like all the others, his eleven white siblings made fun of him. He would go to Father Rooster for company, but Father Rooster had no time for him. The elder one was just too busy going around Umahan looking after all the chickens in the farm. Brown Chick, feeling unwanted, took refuge in the barn where Old Goat lived. Old Goat, who hide was as brown as that of Brown Chick, welcomed the feathered creature. How Brown Chick loved to listen to the stories of Old Goat. and over again was how the bearded one saved the chickens when a giant snake raided the chicken house. Brown Chick wanted to be a hero like Old Goat. ―When I grow up I want to be as brave as you,‖ Brown Chick often told his elderly friend. Brown chick grew bigger and more handsome. He was the younger version of Father Rooster. Now as Young Rooster, he became the butt of jokes in Umahan. When he crowed, he sounded more like Old Goat than Father Rooster. The entire farm laughed at Young Rooster whose crow was a bleat. Only Old Goat understood Young Rooster. The wise goat advised the rooster: ―You are unique. Do not be ashamed. You have been gifted with a talent that nobody else has. Someday, this will be useful to you and to all.‖ One full moon night, Young Rooster stayed awake thinking about his fate. All the creatures of Umahan were asleep. Young Rooster noticed a shadow moving towards the house of Farmer. The shadow, that of a thief, stopped at the window. The man opened the window and entered the house. Young Rooster knew that the thief would steal the prized possessions of Farmer. Quickly, Young Rooster flew towards the opened window. Upon landing, he flapped his strong wings and crowed. He crowed and he crowed. The thief looked at the shadow in the window. He could not figure out what it was. It looked so scary as did its sound. Farmer woke up, took out a rifle and ran towards the room where the sound came from. He opened the light. Farmer discovered a scared and trembling thief hiding behind a chair. Farmer looked towards the window and saw Young Rooster – a handsome creature, brave and unique. As the thief was led out of the house, the creatures of Umahan were all wide awake. Yes, they were proud of the courageous feat of Young Rooster. The first rays of sunlight crept in the mountain near Umahan. Two creatures flew swiftly towards the roof of the farmhouse. Father Rooster and Young Rooster, precise and on time, positioned themselves in the best location where the entire farm could be seen. The two flapped their wings. Moving their heads toward the sky, Father Rooster and Young Rooster loudly announced, “Tok-ToGa-Ok!”. The older one crowed in his usual manner, while Young Rooster did it in a way only he could do. The crows signalled to Farmer and all animals of the coming of a new day.

Sleep When the Wind Blows Years ago a farmer owned land along the Pacific seacoast. He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Pacific. They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the ocean, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals. Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. "Are you a good farm hand?" the farmer asked him. "Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man. Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work. Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, ―Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they blow away!‖ The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, ―No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows.‖ Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew. Moral: When you‘re prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear. Can you sleep when the wind blows through your life? -Author Unknown

 Thrash A conservative priest attended a meeting among the parish musicians, including the youth members. Priest (addressing the youth): The music you play in church with all the electric guitars and the booming drums is trash! The gathering suddenly turned quiet, as one youth member reacted. Youth 1: That‘s cool, Father! Priest: Why is that? Youth 2: We didn‘t realize that of all people, it‘s you who knows the genre of the rock music we play. *** Throw into the River The priest delivered his well-written sermon in a special mass sponsored by the Alcoholics Anonymous. He said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." With a higher timber in his voice, he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." And then finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." Confident he had made his point, he took his seat. The conductor then signalled the pianist, and announced to the congregation, "For our next hymn, let us sing, "Come to the River". *** Q & A: Q. What is Atheism? A. It is a non-prophet organization. Jam Parado is a certified instructor of the latest fitness programme, Zumba ®. Q: Your group, KBNZ, won in the Auckland International Carnival, how does it feel? A: It‘s cool. We aimed to simply present the best we could do, and winning was the bonus part. Q: Can you describe your presentation? A: Since most the dancers are from Cebu City, we danced the Sinulog, a dance of praise to the city‘s patron saint, Sr Sto Nino. Q: Was it difficult to conceptualize? A: I could have easily copied some of the winning dances in the highly competitive contest in Cebu, but I opted to create a hybrid that incorporated modern dance steps, including Zumba, with the traditional Sinulog movements. It was sort of an experiment, and luckily, the judges liked it. Q: How many weeks did it take to prepare the group for the competition? A: Most of the dancers had no experience in competitive dancing, but we approached the presentation as an offering to the Child Jesus. I made sure that the participants would not be overwhelmed by the various movements, so in each session (for 8 Saturdays or Sundays), I introduced a set of steps, until we were able to complete the whole routine, and mastered this in the weeks leading towards to presentation. Q: Was it difficult to train the dancers some of whom had limited dance experience? A: Though there were some who had limited dance experience, I am convinced that each individual is a natural dancer; for the beating of one‘s heart is the rhythm of life, the rhythm within a person. I made sure that the routine was not too complicated. Important were the precision and the unity of movement, and those I emphasized to the group. Q: What is the importance of costumes? A: As much as we concentrated on perfecting the choreography, the design and colours of the costumes were as important. Since the theme was carnival, we decided to have a colourful combination of yellow, green, red and black – and we had hats painted with flower design. The group was bursting with colour – and I guess that‘s one of the reasons why we stood out. Q: What’s next? A: We have been invited to the Sinulog Festival in Auckland. We have added a story line to the routine. It should be interesting. It is not a competition; but we do want to win the hearts of the audience.
