4 The 9th season of American Idol discovered a rare talent with golden dreadlock hair and a heavenly voice. Each week, Crystal Bowersox blew away the competition, receiving good comments from the judges and gaining the viewers support through votes. Her performance ―People Get Ready‖ was rated by MTV as the best performance among all the contestants in all seasons. But it was her stunning rendition of ―Up to the Mountain‖ that left the audience in awe to the very last note. Though she lost out to winner Lee Dewyze, Crystal displayed a shining character of humility.

We are the World
In 1985, popular music artists in American joined hands to raise funds for famine-stricken Africa through a song, ―We are the World‖ composed by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. When Haiti was devastated by earthquake, 80 artists responded to the call to help the people of the poor Caribbean nation by recording an updated version of ―We are the World‖ to support rehabilitation efforts. Lionel Richie, one of the producers, said, ―If we are not a socially aware culture, we're going to fail."

From the Editor: In the 70s, a magazine became the voice of the youth in the Philippines. It was called “Jingle Magazine”. Jingle, tagged as the Chordian Angel, contained lyrics of popular songs with accompanying chords. A few extra pages featured articles on artists and pop culture. As a teenager, I saved my allowance to buy every issue released; for not only was I able to sing my favourite hits, I was accompanying myself on guitar! It was heaven. The influence of Jingle came to light when Martial Law was declared in 1972 and the magazine had some of its pages blackened. It was allowed publication only if it changed its name to “Twinkle”. Reluctantly, the publishers conceded. By then, its voice was stifled until its demise in the 90s. A generation learned to play the guitar through Jingle; and from this generation came forth some of the finest pop music composers and artists of the Philippines. Inspired by Jingle Magazine, CORD puts forward its voice to the world, through songs with chords, and articles that fill the heart and move the soul. The mission of CORD is to strengthen the tie that binds the individual to the Great Composer. Join us in our journey. Love Peace and Harmony, Bro Mel B Libre

“I thought that was by far the best performance and the song of the night. Since this is going to be the final critique I'm ever going to give, I would just like to say that was, outstanding.", were the words of hyper-critical Simon Cowell in his capacity as judge of the 9th season of the popular show, American Idol. He was referring to the performance of Crystal Bowersox whose acoustic version of “Up the Mountain” produced goose bumps and tears not just among the mesmerized audience in Nokia Theatre, but also viewers worldwide. Judge Randy Jackson summed up the performance as "an amazing song by an amazing singer", while MTV said Crystal showed an unmistakable connection to the lyric, and The Boston Globe said her performance of this "great song" was the night's only true highlight. The next day, when the result of the viewers‘ voting was the read, for a moment the audience fell silent when Lee DeWyze was proclaimed the winner by a slim margin of two per cent. Lee was stunned, while Crystal simply smiled as the spotlight focused on the victor. The internet blogs buzzed with unkind words for Lee who in all counts had a lacklustre performance compared to Crystal‘s brilliant rendition of the three final songs. In the press conference following the grand finale, the following account was reported: ―She (Crystal) almost looked relieved to have lost. In fact, Crystal says she had an inkling of the outcome earlier in the day when she experienced "this strange sense of peace and calm." Going a step further, she added, "I knew Lee was going to win. I just had a feeling and I couldn't be happier for him. Lee deserves every minute of this." She also said: ―Both of us are going to have very successful careers and we‘re going to be friends for a long time.‖ Well said Crystal, well said. The conduct of Crystal reminds us of what St Peter wrote: “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.‖ There is that reminder: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” (James 4:10) CORD Vol 1 No. 1 July 2010

We are the World In 1984, famine ravaged most of Africa and artists, initially in the United Kingdom, put out a single, "Do They Know It‘s Christmas" to raise funds to save lives of people dying. US singer Harry Belafonte took the initiative in the other end of Atlantic inviting the hottest American acts of the time. The response to the invitation to join the cause was overwhelming with a super group of 50 lending their voices to a song called "We are the World". It was a ―who‘s who event‖. It included Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder. The recording was done immediately after the American Music Awards of 1985 – and one major artist had to skip the ceremonies to put out the vocals as a guide to the rest of the group. That artist was Michael Jackson, who together with Lionel Richie, composed the masterpiece that won four Grammys including Song of the Year, Record the Year, and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. More importantly, it raised $63 million for the famine relief in Africa. Michael Jackson died on June 26, 2009 at the age of 50 and he was in the midst of preparing for 50 major sold out shows in London. Though he may have had many issues that tarnished his image, Jackson did his share to alleviate poverty, and at the same time developed God-given gifts in song and dance to perfection. In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, younger artists and established stars that failed to join in the first recording, lent their voices to a new version of ―We are the World‖, with the intent of raising funds to support the rehabilitation efforts in the devastated Caribbean nation. On the 25th anniversary of the historic recording, the Artists for Haiti in 2010 released ―Live 25‖ on February 12, 2010. The 80 star-studded cast includes Justin Bieber, Nicole Scherzinger, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus, Usher, Celine Dion, Carlos Santana, Fergie, and Enrique Iglesias. Also joining in were Jamie Foxx, TPain, LL Cool J, Will.i.am and Snoop Dogg. Composer Lionel Richie who produced the song with Quincy Jones and Wyclef Jean, said: ―I want this song to be the battle cry again. Every once in a while, you have to wake the world up. We slept right through Katrina. If we are not a socially aware culture, we're going to fail." God gives every individual a gift or gifts. Some discover this early (like Michael Jackson), while others much later in life. "John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven." (John 3:27) For a moment, look at yourself in a mirror and reflect on what you are really good at. Have you used this to make someone feel better? It is in the sharing of our gifts that we become true Christians. "But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you." (Luke 11:41)

On June 18, marking the 30th anniversary of the film, which became a cult classic and spawned a fashion of wearing black hats and dark sunglasses to parties, the Vatican newspaper dedicated a full page and no fewer than five articles to it. Jake and Elwood -- who say they are on a "mission from God" to raise the money to pay a back tax bill for the orphanage -and the band members, are symbols of "redemption obtained with sacrifice."The newspaper also notes that the film is sprinkled with Catholic and moral references such as the nun Sister Mary Stigmata, who they call "The Penguin." "This is a memorable film, and, judging by the facts, a Catholic one," the newspaper said...Dana Key, half of the Christian rock group De Garmo & Key, died on June 6. He was a pioneer in what later became solid Christian rock music. Key had over twenty albums released over his career. One of De Garmo & Key's most memorable songs was Boycott Hell recorded by the Newsboys.... Special Feature: The Saint of Priests:
Saint John Vianney
In these times when the number of young people pursuing the religious vocation is dwindling, the celebration of the Year for Priests focused on the importance of priests and other religious in propagating the faith and in shepherding God‘s people. John Vianney serves as an inspiration, for his life is a testament of serving the Lord despite the odds. As a student, Vianney was one of average intelligence and had difficulty learning Latin, the language of the church. He flunked the entrance examination for the seminary; and only on the second attempt was he able to pursue formal training. Though he lacked a scholarly mind, he was ―far advanced in spiritual science and in the practice of virtue.‖
In the declaration of the Year for Priests, Pope Benedict XVI brought to the attention of the world the saint of priests, Saint John Vianney, also known as the Cure d'Ars, commonly known as Jean Marie Vianney.
In 1818, Vianney became the parish priest of Ars, a village near Lyons. It was in the exercise of the functions as the parish priest that as the "curé d'Ars" he became known throughout France and the Christian world. In Ars, he founded an orphanage for destitute girls, "The Providence" that became the model of similar institutions established later all over France. His most important work though was the direction of souls. People, near and far, came to Ars to seek his guidance. As early as 1835, his bishop forbade him to attend the annual retreats of the diocesan clergy because of "the souls awaiting him yonder". During the last ten years of his life, he spent from sixteen to eighteen hours a day in the confessional. His advice was sought by bishops, priests, religious, young men and women in doubt as to their vocation, sinners, persons in all sorts of difficulties and the sick. In 1855, the number of pilgrims had reached twenty thousand a year. The Holy Spirit worked through him as his advice touched people who sought him. It was said that, ―his direction was characterized by common sense, remarkable insight, and supernatural knowledge. His instructions were simple in language, full of imagery drawn from daily life and country scenes, but breathing faith and the love of God‖. The once unwise servant was full of God‘s wisdom. The Cure d‘ Ars died at an old age, though he practised mortification as a youth, and as a priest fasted for forty years. Pope Pius X proposed him as a model to the parochial clergy. In 1925, Pope Pius XI canonized him. His feast is on 4 August, the date of his death in 1859.

The Best of Blotfree By Bro Mel B Libre The Mountains We Conquer (This is the first blog of Bro Mel B Libre on January 11, 2008)
Mount Everest will forever stand tall among mountains and peaks in the world, and so will the person who first conquered it forever stand tall among men. At 88, Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander who conquered Mt. Everest in 1953 died of heart attack on January 11, 2008 in Auckland. Those mourning for his passage are not only his countrymen but also leaders and ordinary persons aware of his accomplishments. New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said: "Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities. In reality, he was a colossus. He was a heroic figure who not only 'knocked off' Everest but lived a life of determination, humility, and generosity.‖ Those three qualities–determination, humility and generosity–are repeatedly mentioned in many of the tributes given to the man referred to by the Nepalese people as “burra sahib” or ―big man‖ for his 6 feet 2 inches frame, and for his nobility. In 1997, though old and fragile, he took a plane to Antarctica to join others in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Scott Base, which started New Zealand‘s exploration on the ice. “Yes, be bold and strong! Banish fear and doubt! For remember, the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) Hillary was the epitome of humility despite being a celebrity. He once said, "You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things---to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.‖ Among the first to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II during her reign, Hillary described himself in his passport as ―authorlecturer‖ obtaining invitations to speak before audiences in many parts of the world. He used his celebrity status to touch the lives of the Nepalese people from whom he owed much of his iconic stature. He became a fixture in Nepal, returning more than 120 times to set up schools, hospitals, health clinics and airfields as well as pursue reforestation programs. The Himalayan Trust he founded in 1962 raises about $250,000 a year to fund all the projects. “Thus you will be enriched in all things and in every way, so that you can be generous, and [your generosity as it is] administered by us will bring forth thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:11) One of the most difficult things for an individual who has reached the top is keeping one's feet on the ground. “By standing firm you will gain life.” (Luke 21:19) That is what Sir Edmund Hillary achieved in his lifetime-–and that is what made him a truly extraordinary man. Sir Ed declared, "It is not the mountains that we conquer, but ourselves.‖ CORD Vol 1 No. 1 July 2010

LAUGH & DEVOTION A priest passing through his church in the middle of the day, decided to pause by the altar and see who had come to pray. Just then the back door opened, a man came down the aisle, the priest frowned as he saw the man hadn't shaved in a while. His shirt was shabby and his coat was worn and frayed. The man knelt, bowed his head, then rose and walked away. In the days that followed, each noontime this chap came. Each time he knelt just for a moment, a lunch pail in his lap. Well, the priest's suspicions grew, with robbery a main fear. He decided to stop the man and ask him, 'What are you doing here?' The old man said, he worked down the road. Lunch was half an hour. Lunchtime was his prayer time, for finding strength and power. 'I stay only moments, see, because the factory is so far away; as I kneel here talking to the Lord, this is kinda what I say: 'I just came again to tell you, Lord, how happy I’ve been, since we found each other’s friendship and you took away my sin. I do not know much how to pray, but I think about you, everyday. So Jesus this is Jim checking in today.’ The priest feeling foolish, told Jim that was fine. He told the man he was welcome to come and pray just anytime. Time to go, Jim smiled, said 'Thanks.' He hurried to the door. The minister knelt at the altar he had never done it before. His cold heart melted, warmed with love, and met with Jesus there. As the tears flowed, in his heart, he repeated old Jim's prayer: 'I just came again to tell you, Lord, how happy I’ve been, since we found each other’s friendship and you took away my sin. I do not know much how to pray, but I think about you, everyday. So Jesus this is me checking in today.’ Past noon one day, the priest noticed that old Jim had not come. As more days passed without Jim, he began to worry. At the factory, he asked about him, learning he was ill. The hospital staff members were worried, but he had given them a thrill. The week that Jim was with them, he brought changes in the ward. His smiles, joy contagious. Changed people were his reward. The head nurse could not understand why Jim was so glad, when no flowers, calls or cards came. Not a visitor he had. The priest stayed by his bed. He voiced the nurse's concern: No friends came to show they cared. He had nowhere to turn. Looking surprised, old Jim spoke up and with a winsome smile, 'the nurse is wrong, she couldn't know, that he's in here all the while.‘ Every day at noon he is here, a dear friend of mine. You see, he sits right down, takes my hand, leans over and says to me: 'I just came again to tell you, Jim, how happy I have been, since we found this friendship, and I took away your sin. I always love to hear you pray. I think about you each day, and so Jim, this is Jesus checking in today.’ (Forwarded from the web)

DANCE: An Interview with Jam Parado Jam Parado is a certified instructor of the latest fitness programme, Zumba ®. She answers to questions made by Cord: Cord: What is Zumba? Jam Parado: Zumba ® is the latest fitness programme that has taken over the world! It fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness programme that will blow you away. Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life. C: Where did all begin? JP: Celebrity fitness trainer, "Beto" Perez, stumbled upon the concept of Latin-inspired dance-fitness in his native Cali, Colombia in the mid-‗90s. One day, he walked into his aerobics class and realized he had forgotten his aerobics music. Thinking quickly, he grabbed whatever tapes he had in his backpack. Beto's tapes were comprised of songs he loved, the traditional Latin salsa and merengue music he listened to all his life. But it was a challenge to improvise a whole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics music. Beto rose to the challenge and from this last-minute improvisation a revolutionary new concept in fitness was born – the Zumba Fitness-Party™! The class soon became the most popular class at his fitness facility. C: What makes it different from other fitness programmes? JP: Zumba ® is super fun! The music is awesome as it makes me move, let loose and have fun. It teaches so many exciting dance steps from popular latin dances such as salsa, samba, cumbia, merengue and chacha while incorporating fitness exercises that will tone muscles and burn calories into the choreographies. C: What makes it different from other latin dances? JP: Unlike other latin dances, Zumba ® does not require a partner and does not focus on the technical steps of the dance. Instead, it focuses on mixing the dance steps with fitness exercises and ensuring that participants are having a blast and loving the workout. C: What age brackets can participate? JP: Zumba ® is for all ages. If you are tired of the same boring routine at the gym, sick of lifting weights or if you are finding it hard to motivate yourself to exercise, come along and try out this new craze that is taking New Zealand by storm! Check out my zumba profile http://66495.zumba.com/ for more details about my classes or www.dxdance.co.nz for more classes throughout Auckland.
