Official Newsletter of the Filipino Sporting Event of the Year

Filipino Families and Friends in Fun and Games 31 May 2014, Auckland, New Zealand

Issue 1

More Fun in New Zealand During Sinulog, Filipinos gather to pray and to dance. During the weekend leading to the Philippine Independence Day, Filipinos celebrate with a variety show. During Labour Weekend, Filipinos compete in sports and cultural events. A new addition to the Filipino calendar in New Zealand is LINGAWDUWA, the Filipino Sporting Event of the Year. The inaugural competition was held on June 1, 2013 and families from different parts of Auckland formed themselves into “tribus” and contested in different events such as Dakup-Dakup, Siatong and Patintero. Tribu Irong Kagirun (of East Auckland) was declared as overall champion. In 2014, LINGAWDUWA will happen on May 31 hosted by Filipino Chapter-Farm Cove. According to Mikki Guantero, of the organizing committee, this year’s competition will be bigger and more fun. “We’ve divided the event in three categories: Group, Individual and Kids, and added more games. And we are extending the invitation to all Filipino associations as well as informal groupings not just in Auckland, but from outside as well.” The group events are: Dakup-dakup (a,k.a. Tigsu, Agawan Base or Sekyu Base, Japanese game); Tubig-tubig (a.k.a. Patintero); Siatung (a.k.a. Bati Cobra); Agawang Sulok; Tumba Lata (a.k.a. Tumbang Preso); and Bagul-bagul. The individual events consist of: Dama; Sungka; Takyan; Paligid (a.k.a. Kariring); and Jolen Pinis (a.k.a. Holen). The kids are expected to compete in Tumba-lata (a.k.a. Tumbang Preso); Luksong Tinik; Luksong Lubid; and Piko. Interested groups are requested to librelaw@yahoo.com. No fees are required.

MORE FUN IN NAMES What makes LINGAWDUWA more fun, other than the games is the adoption of names for the different competing tribus. The organizers encourage teams to submit tribu names that are Filipino in origin with a tinge of Pinoy humor. Last year, we had a good harvest. There were the formal: Tribu Agila, Tribu Talisayon, and Tribu Ibalon Hadlong. The legendary: Tribu Kabayong Idlas and Tribu Kabayong Pak-an. The funny: Tribu Kiwing Gahalhal, Tribu Irong Kagiron, Tribu Kikik nga Layaw. And two of the most hilarious: Tribu Iring Gilaygit and Tribu Ilagang Pawt.

The first group to register this year carries the rib-tickling name – Sigbing Gahayang. The organizing committee encourages the competing teams to design their own logos and bring their banners for the opening parade on May 31, 2014. It is also suggested that each tribu wear uniform t-shirts with their official logo emblazoned in front.
