MESSAGE. Children love to play. So do adults. But because of the demands of daily living, mature people cannot find time to do the fun games they used to play in their younger days. And children who grow in countries other than the Philippines, failing to observe Filipino traditional games played in their surroundings, do not find connection to the experiences of their parents, alienating them to the rich Filipino culture and heritage. It is in this light that LingawDuwa was conceived. For parents and adults, the event will allow them to re-visit the fun games of their childhood. For children, the activity will let them discover and experience eight traditional Pinoy games including patintero, batolata and siatong. If there are enough players, an exhition game of Sepak Takraw may just be featured. LingawDuwa is the highlight of FILIPINO FAMILY DAY, a celebration of the Filipino family on June 1, 2013 in Auckland New Zealand. As Dexter Ycong said, ““Life is about and for the family.” Surely life would be genuinely fun if families gather and play in events that allow them not only to enjoy, but also rediscover their roots. To all the players, while you give all your best in the competition, let the spirit of fun be the guiding force. LET THE FUN GAMES BEGIN With the enthusiastic response to the invitation for groups to participate in staging traditional Filipino games, LINGAWDUWA 2013 is turning into the Filpino Sporting Event of the Year in Auckland, New Zealand. Sixteen teams consisting of 10-15 members each are vying for cash prizes and the LingawDuwa Trophy, as Katilingbang Bisaya sa New Zealand (KBNZ) hosts probably the first FILIPINO FAMILY DAY in the world on Saturday, June 1, 2013 in Henderson Intermediate School in Waitakere. Organisers are expecting 200 or more participants to the event. The program starts at 9:00am for the registration followed by the Opening Ceremonies that will include the parade of colours, the recitation of the Filipino Family Oath and the Oath of Sportsmanship. Norman Gayo, (photo below) whose wife Leah died while delivering a baby in the Auckland Hospital, will formally receive the amount raised from the fundraising through the help of New Zealand Herald. The games will then proceed and during the lunch break, a miniconcert will be staged featuring New Zealand’s Power Pop Girls, KIS, the acoustic duo of Andrea & Rebecca and host Ferdie Esclamado. Should there be enough players, an exhibition game of Sepak Takraw will preceed the championship rounds in the afternoon. The prizes and the LingawDuwa Trophy (for the over-all champion) will close the day-long festivities. The events to be contested are: (Group) Patintero; Batolata, Dakup-dakup; Siatong; and (Individual) Dama, Sungka, Takyan,
Jumping Rope. The competiting teams are: Tribu Agila, Tribu Talisayon, Tribu Kabayong Idlas; Tribu Pobreng Alindahaw, Tribu Tukong Amang; Tribu Kikik nga Layaw; Tribu Kabayong Pak-an; Tribu Ibalon Hadiong; Tribu Ibalon Baltog; Tribu Tamaraw; Tribu Iring Gilaygit; Tribu Irong Kublan; Tribu Kiwing Gahalhal; Tribu Leon Kilat; and Tribu Ibong Adarna. According to event chairman Alvin Soniega, the last two teams are still open to participants with Tribu Ibong Adarna reserved for those coming from Luzon. Rosendo Menchavez, past president of KBNZ, said, “I’ve been in New Zealand for more than 25 years and this is the first time for me to witness traditional Filipino games to be played by a sizable number of teams. This is really fantastic!” For his part, KBNZ President Mel B Libre remarked, “I know that it will be a memorable experience for everyone who will turn up in LINGAWDUWA. I’ve thought about an event such as this for years, and finally it’s happening. Thank you to all who in one way or another are supporting the activity. Game Mechanics Group Games: 1. Batolata Objective of the Game: For the attacking team to topple the lata using a bato (or slipper) and return to the home without being caught Team composition: Attacking Team: 5 players (At least 2 women) Guarding Team: 5 players (At least 2 women) Regulation time: 5 minutes for each attacking round or until all the players are touched or tagged. Rules: 1. The game is played by two teams (Team A vs. Team B). Strictly five minutes for each team to take turns in playing watcher and topplers. 2. Each team chooses 5 players to play in this game. Each team shall choose one among their players to act as watcher. 3. The team captains will play the best-of-three ‘bato-papel-gunting’. The winner of the best of three will be designated as the first attacking team, and each of its five players attempts to topple the “lata” with a rubber slipper (the act of throwing the slipper over the tin can is called “bato”). 4. The other team will have its watcher guard the can. Once the “lata” is toppled, the watcher will try to place it back to its original location as fast as he can, while the other player will try to retrieve his rubber slipper. If the toppler-player has not retrieved his rubber slipper he must remain at a designated spot and must wait for the next player/s in his team to topple the can before he/they can run to retrieve their respective slippers. 5. While running to get his slipper he has to avoid being caught by the watcher. 6. Once all the five toppler-players have thrown the slippers over the tin can, either caught by the watcher or retrieved their slippers the game may be finished unless the regulation time has not been completed. If there is still time, those toppler-players back in their home may continue in trying to topple the can.
7. The first “watcher team” will have their turn as topplers and the other team will have their turn as the watcher. 8. The team who gets to retrieve the slippers back to the home at more times wins. Note: Can/lata will be provided. Teams are requested to please bring 5 rubber slippers. 2. Dakop-Dakop (Agawan Base) Objective of the Game: To touch and tag the opposing team, each member tagged will be held hostage. Each team is composed of 5 members Regulation time: 10 minutes Rules: 1. There are two bases which each team claims as their own. 2. The first team to tag all the team members of the other team wins. 3. You can tag other people who have touched their base before you and are on the opposite team. If they've touched their base after you've touched your base, they can tag you, and you can't tag them. 3. Patintero (Tubig-tubig) Objective of the Game: For the attacking team to cross all the parallel lines and return to the home without being caught

Rules: 1. Before the start, the team captains will play the best-of-three ‘bato-papel-gunting’. The winner of the best of three will be designated as the first attacking team. 2. Attacking team to run into the four parallel squares and back without being touched or tagged by the guarding team. (If player from the attacking team is caught, that player is out of the game.) 3. Guarding team will post a guard on each line and prevent any attacking team to go through. 4. The teams exchange places for the next round.
Points: 1 point for each line passed. Winner: Attacking team with the highest point earned. 4. Siatong Objective of the Game: For an attacking player to hit the twig to the longest distance without being caught and to prevent the long stick from being hit. Equipment: Long stick Short twig Hole in the ground (or equivalent) Rules: 1. Each team is composed of five players. 2. Played in two rounds. The first round will have Team A (the winner in the best of three 窶話atopapel-gunting) as the attacking team and Team B the guarding team. 3. In round 1, each player of Team A will play in three sequences: (i) shooting the twig; (ii) hitting the twig; and (iii) raising the twig. In all the sequences, the guarding team is spread across the field with the objective of catching the twig and its leaves the hole. Sequence (i): Team A member shoots the twig using the long stick as far as possible. If the twig is caught, Team A player gets a zero score, and proceeds to sequence (ii). If the twig is not caught, Team B member nearest the twig will try to hit the long stick placed across the hole. If the long stick is hit, Team A player gets a zero score, and proceeds to sequence (ii). If Team B fails to catch the twig or hit the long stick, the Team A member gets one point. Sequence (ii): Team A member holds the twig and hits it with the long stick to reach the farthest distance. If the twig is caught by any of Team B members, Team A member gets a zero score, and proceeds to sequence (iii). If the twig is not caught, the Team B member nearest the twig will try to hit the long stick placed across the hole. If the long stick is hit, Team A gets a zero score, and proceeds to sequence (iii). If Team B fails to catch the twig or hit the long stick, the Team A members gets one point. Sequence (iii): Team A member places the twig to a standing angle in the hole. The attacking player hits the twig so it bounces in the air, then strikes it towards the front field. If the attack
player fails to hit or strike the twig, he/she concludes the sequence with no score. If the twig lands at the back of the hole, Team A player gets a zero score. If the twig is caught by any player of Team B, Team A player gets a zero score. If the twig is not caught, Team B member nearest the twig will try to hit the long stick placed across the hole. If the long stick is hit, Team A member gets a zero score. If Team B fails to catch the twig or hit the long stick, Team A member earns one point. The next four players of Team A follow the sequences described above. After all the attacking players complete round 1, the individual scores are added up for the team score. 4. In round 2, Team B becomes the attacking team and Team B the guarding team. The sequences above mention are followed. The individual scores of the five players of Team B are then totalled at the end of the round. 5. The team which obtains the highest score after the two rounds is declared the winner. Should there be a tie each team will choose one member to play the three sequences against a member of the other team. Whoever gets the higher score makes the team the winner. 6. As punishment for the losing team, the winning team is allowed to hit the twig five times and from the point where the twig falls the last time, the members of the losing team will shout ‘Siatong’ until reaching the hole.
Individual Games: 1. Dama Objective of the Game: To collect as many pitsas of the opponent Equipment: Damahan Pitsas Rules: 1. The game is played by two people, each with 12 pieces of pitsas made from bamboo, stones, or bottle caps. 2. Player positions the 12 pieces of "pitsa" on the end points of the diagram. They move from point to point, and like chess, the game ends once the opponent’s pitsas are captured.
2. Jumping Rope Objective: To jump as many times until the end of regulation time Equipment: Rope Regulation time: 2 minutes per contest Rules: 1. An individual event, the competitor will designate two assistants to hold each end of the standard competition rope with the task of operating the rope. 2. Upon the signal of the referee, the assistants of the two competitors start moving the rope, and at their convenient time, the competitors enter the moving rope, with each jump counted as one point. 3. The competitor who obtains the higher number of jumps (or points) within the two minute regulation time is declared the winner and proceeds to the next round. Should a competitor hit the rope prior to the regulation time the other competitor will automatically be declared the winner whether he/she hits the rope prior to the completion of regulation time. 4. Should there be a tie in the score the two competitors will have a one-on-one contest without assistants. The one who obtains the higher number of jumps within one minute is declared the winner. 3. Sungka Objective of the Game: Place as many pieces in the home. Equipment: Sungkaan 98 pieces of stones Regulation time: 10 minutes Rules 1. Put seven pieces on each hollow found on the sungkaan. Each player owns one row and each row has seven hollows. There are two
opposite rows found on this wooden block. This means that a total of 49 game pieces must be placed on each row for a total of 98 pieces for both rows. Leave the two larger hollows, each one called the "head" or "home" on the extreme left and right of the wooden block, empty. 2. Choose who will be the first and the second player. The hole in the left of each player will be his or her head. The players decide whether to start the first turn simultaneously or if one will start before the other. The choice of doing a simultaneous play is only allowed for the first turn. After this, the players take turn alternately 3 .A game shall not go beyond 10 minutes. At the end of 10 minutes, the player with the highest number of stones in the “home� is declared the winner. 4. Takyan Objective of the Game: To keep the takyan on the air for the longest time. Equipment: Takyan Regulation time: Two minutes per contest Rules: 1. This is an individual game with two players competing against each other. 2. Upon the signal of the referee, the players throw the takyan on the air and starting kicking it into the air and keeping it off the ground for the regulation time of 2 minutes. 3. If the takyan falls on the ground prior to the 2 minutes regulation time, the score of the player will be number of times the takyan stayed up until it fell down. He/she will no longer proceed further. The other player (who has kept the takyan on the air) continues until end of regulation time. The player with the most number of kicks is declared the winner, and goes to the next stage.
