FEAST SUCCESS

Seventy-four brethren attended the Food & Music FEAST on July 11, 2010 at the Social Hall of St Mary’s Northcote Parish. The participants were treated to inspiring talks, delicious food and uplifting music in the spirit of fellowship, joy and praise. Bro Mel B Libre, Lead Servant of TawagAwit, in his opening remarks, said that the celebration was one of thanksgiving: for the ministry had grown to four chapters; for the blessings of members who obtained their permanent residency visas; and for the gifts of life for the chapter coordinators (Bro Peter/Sis Jamelle and Bro Cyril/Sis Rose) who are looking forward for their first babies.

Pope’s Intentions for August 2010. General Intention: That the World Youth Day taking place in Madrid may encourage all the young people of the world to root and found their lives in Christ. Missionary Intention: That Christians of the West, docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, may re-encounter the freshness and enthusiasm of their faith... Before Sunday's Angelus prayer on July 18 from the intimate courtyard of his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, Pope Benedict XVI spoke of the need to listen to the Word of God. As Mary does in Sunday's Gospel, we must learn to choose the "best portion" in our relationship with the Lord. During his pre-Angelus catechesis, Holy Father noted that with the arrival of summer comes vacation time and, thus, a "favorable moment" to bring our focus back to what is most important in life: "listening to the Word of the Lord." We are reminded of this, he said, in Sunday's Gospel reading, which is centered around Jesus' visit to Mary and Martha. Reflecting on this Gospel, the Pope exclaimed, "Martha wishes to teach the Teacher!" And, instead, pointed out Benedict XVI, Jesus says with affection, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled over many things. And yet only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the best portion, and it shall not be taken away from her." On this, the Pope explained that "The word of Christ is very clear: no contempt for the active life, none either for generous hospitality; but a clear call back to the fact that the only truly necessary thing is another: listening to the Word of the Lord; and the Lord in that moment is there, present in the Person of Jesus!" Turning to the meaning for today, he observed that "Everything else will pass and will be taken from us, but the Word of God is eternal and gives meaning to our daily activity." (CNA)…Benedict XVI chose a theme for the 44th World Day of Peace that will highlight the role of religious freedom in fostering peace. The World Day of Peace is observed every Jan. 1, which is also the Solemnity of the Mother of God. The theme for 2011 will be "Religious Freedom, the Path to Peace." In the Vatican communiqué published on July 13, it explained that "in many parts of the world there exist various forms of restrictions or denials of religious freedom, from discrimination and marginalization based on religion, to acts of violence against religious minorities." The note stated that religious freedom "is rooted in the equal and inherent dignity of man," and is "oriented toward the search for 'unchangeable truth.'" It called religious freedom the "freedom of freedoms." It said that “an authentic notion of religious freedom offers a profound vision of this fundamental human right, one which broadens the horizons of 'humanity' and 'freedom' of man, allowing for the establishment of a deep relationship with oneself, with the other and with the world. Religious freedom is a freedom in this respect for human dignity and life." (CNS)...Even when the Catholic Church suffers, "faith creates joy," Pope Benedict XVI said after previewing a German television film about his first five years in office. The film, "Five Years of Pope Benedict XVI," was produced by the Bavarian network Bayerischer Rundfunk and is scheduled for a Christmas season broadcast in Germany and Austria. After watching the film July 29 at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Benedict said it allowed him to experience again some of the most important events of his pontificate, which began in April 2005. "Personally, it was very moving to see certain moments, especially the moment when the Lord placed the Petrine service on my shoulders, a weight that no one could ever carry alone with just his own strength; it can be carried only because the Lord carries us, carries me," he said. The music-loving pontiff said he also appreciated the filmmakers' decision to use Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony" -- the "Ode to Joy" -- as the soundtrack because it expresses the joy of redemption. "Even today, although the church may suffer much ... it is a joyful church," he said. (CNS)
