January 2013

GIVING, SHARING, CARING CHRISTMAS On December 23, 2012, the Santa Clauses came. The gifts delivered. The food shared. The talents entertained. And more than 100 people showed that they cared for the 23 new migrants (not counting their children). Bro Mel B Libre hosted the program, calling on first Bro Mikki Guantero who delivered an Invocation accompanied with singing. Among the highlights of the program were:

We Need You TawagAwit invites you to help in spreading God’s Word through music and otherPLACE acts of love. The minimum participation are: attendance during practice sessions of songs, usually once a week or once every two weeks AND singing with the group during the assigned mass usually once a month or once every two months. A supporter is one who can donate services or resources to the Ministry. There are special events that TawagAwit organizes and the events need finances or helping hands. An organizer is one who initiates the formation of a chapter in a parish. The Ministry will provide all the assistance within its means to help in the vital task.

-Jojo Taghoy made an emphatic sharing about his struggles and successes as a new migrant -Singing of Christmas carols led by the T-Kids of St Mark’s Pakuranga, Me-el of TaYo presents Eli, Isabela Caballero and Jeydi Parado filled the Blockhouse Bay Community Centre -Two quiz games had participants tackle as well as act out the questions asked by quiz masters Ching Mandawe and Maylaine Cerna. -Three Filipino youths from the Henderson Intermediate School were recognised for their achievements upon the initiative of Elmer Cerna. -Everyone enjoyed the food donated by kind donors. These included mostly Filipino favourites like pork barbecue, pan de sal, maja blanca and arrays of cakes. -KIS and their friends gave fast-paced and highly entertaining numbers in Dance 4 Life Concert. YFC Moses Wanted Crew and SKSA KPop Dance Crew wowed the audience with their moves, while Errin C and Alistair Serrao rapped with humour. Vince Sacay thrilled with his violin piece accompanied by Dicdic del Castillo on piano. The energetic Kayth Ina and Shaine had three costume changes; and even had the audience on their feet. -All the new migrants received not just one, but two gifts. As there were just too many gifts donated by Santa Clauses, the Santa Team of Rosendo and Claudia Menchavez, Debbie Libre and Fara Ortiz decided to give these away to nearly all of the participants of the event. -The program culminated with the group photo with everyone having big smiles, a sign that all had a genuinely merry Christmas. Truly, OG: Open Gathering was a giving, sharing and caring Christmas celebration.

A GIFT TO NEW ZEALAND By Bro Mel B Libre PLACE PHOTO HERE, “What can we gift New Zealand?” New Zealand is home to people of diverse ethnicities. It is a beautiful country with its clean and green environment. It is a tolerant society that allows everyone to freely express themselves within the bounds of the law. New Zealand is a caring nation that attends to the needs of the elderly, the sickly, the unemployed and the poor. It is a land of opportunity that gives people the chance to progress personally, financially and creatively. We must be grateful to New Zealand, its government and its people. TawagAwit, the group that initiated OG: Open Gathering has seen the need for people to have a more meaningful celebration of Christmas, the season for giving, sharing and caring. In a number of countries in the world such as the Philippines, Canada and Spain, employees are given 13th month pay usually in the month of December. With the benefit, employees are able to spend for their families, friends and even to strangers for a merry Christmas. On the other hand, the economy will flourish with the increased business activities as a result of the monetary benefit. With 13th month pay adopted by New Zealand, employees who work hard to keep the business going and who pay taxes to the government are fairly rewarded. As a gift to New Zealand, TawagAwit is initiating a signature campaign in a Petition for the New Zealand Parliament to Adopt a 13th Month Pay for Employees. The campaign kicked off during the OG: Open Gathering on December 23, 2012 and will end on June 30, 2013. Our target: 5,000 signatures. Join us.

VATICAN NOTES: Pope’s Intentions: January 2013 General: That during this “Year of Faith” Christians may deepen their knowledge of the mystery of Christ and joyfully bear witness to the gift of faith in Him. Missionary: That the Christian communities of the Middle East, which frequently suffer discrimination, may receive the strength of fidelity and perseverance of the Holy Spirit Fortunetelling, like all occult practices, is strictly taboo at the Vatican; and prophecy is a rare gift among journalists. But Pope Benedict XVI's calendar for 2013 is already filling up with planned, probable or possible events. Here are 5 to watch for in the news during the year:

New Encyclical: Pope Benedict's fourth encyclical will be released in the first half of next year, very possibly in the spring, according to Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman. Treating the subject of faith, the encyclical will complete a trilogy on the three "theological virtues"; the previous installments were "Deus Caritas Est" (2005) on charity, and "Spe Salvi" (2007) on hope. Worldwide solemn eucharistic adoration: On the feast of Corpus Christi, June 2, Pope Benedict will lead an hour of eucharistic adoration to be observed simultaneously around the world, highlighting a traditional devotion that fell largely out of use in the decades after the Second Vatican Council, but which has lately grown more popular with the pope's personal encouragement. This promises to be one of the most visually impressive of many events scheduled for the Year of Faith, which ends Nov. 24. New charter for health care workers: The Vatican plans to publish an updated version of its 1995 guidelines for Catholic hospitals, taking into account nearly two decades of technological developments and political trends in areas including abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research and human cloning. The document, whose target release date is in June, will reflect Catholic moral teaching on biomedical issues and Catholic social teaching on the equitable and effective provision of health care. World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro: Hundreds of thousands of young Catholics are expected to gather in Rio in July for a week of events whose highlight will be the presence of the pope, encouraging them to cultivate their faith and religious identity. This will be Pope Benedict's second trip to Brazil, the country with the world's largest Catholic population, where he is also likely to address problems of inequality in a developing economy, as well as the need for good government and civil peace in Latin America as a whole. New cardinals? The number of cardinals under the age of 80, the only ones eligible to vote for the next pope, will be down to no more than 110 by Oct. 19. Pope Benedict could choose to boost their number to the legal limit of 120 by calling a consistory on the day before the feast of Christ the King (Nov. 24, 2013), a traditional occasion for the creation of cardinals and the last day of the Year of Faith. Likely additions to the College of Cardinals include Archbishop Gerhard L. Muller, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Archbishop Vincent G. Nichols of Westminster, England. (Catholic News Service)
