NEW NOTES TawagAwit Newsletter
July 2010
Come to the Feast TawagAwit will gather for its first Food & Music FEAST on July 11, 2010, 12pm at the Social Hall of St Mary’s Parish, Northcote, North Shore City. The activity aims to strengthen the camaraderie among members of the ministry; share food and music in the spirit of love, joy and fellowship; celebrate the accomplishments of the chapters in the first half of 2010; welcome members of the new chapters; and to thank God for all the blessings. In its decision, the Council of Servant Leaders opted for an exclusive activity for members from different chapters to meet in fellowship and to enhance their musicality through sharing of songs and teachings from resource persons. This event is in lieu of the Singalleluia! Pentecost celebration, that the ministry organised in the previous two years.

Vatican Notes: Pope’s Intentions for July2010. General Intention: That

Christians may contribute to alleviating the material and spiritual suffering of AIDS patients, especially in the poorest countries; Missionary Intention: For the religious who work in mission territories, that they may be witnesses of the joy of the Gospel and living signs of the love of Christ... As tensions swirled just to the north in Turkey and to the south in Gaza, Pope Benedict XVI landed in Cyprus praying for peace. (see photo of Pope Benedict greeted by Orthodox Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus upon arrival). The pope began his June 4-6 visit to Cyprus, in the far eastern Mediterranean Sea, by blessing an olive tree. Arriving at the airport in Paphos, the pope told President Demetris Christofias and the Cypriot people: "May the love of your homeland and of your families and the desire to live in harmony with your neighbors under the compassionate protection of almighty God inspire you patiently to resolve the remaining concerns that you share with the international community for the future of your island." Pope Benedict went directly from the airport to the Church of Agia Kiriaki Chrysopolitissa, which stands in the midst of an archaeological park with the remains of a fourth-century Christian basilica. Amid the cream-colored stones and ancient marble columns, the pope presided over an ecumenical prayer service honoring Sts. Paul and Barnabas, who preached the Gospel in Cyprus in about 45 AD. According to the Acts of the Apostles, the pro-consul of the Roman Empire converted to Christianity as a result of the apostles' ministry. "Thus it was from this place that the Gospel message began to spread throughout the empire" and take root in Europe, the pope said (cns)... Pope Benedict on June 11, in closing the Year for the Priests said that the priesthood is "a gift concealed in 'earthen vessels' which ever anew, even amid human weakness, makes [God's] love concretely present in this world." He made the statement as an image of the newly proclaimed patron of all priests hang from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, with 15,000 priestconcelebrants in a Mass for the feast of the Sacred Heart. St. Peter's Square was teeming with rows of white-vested priests from every corner of the globe, as well as 80 cardinals and 350 archbishops and bishops. (See photo right top) The vigil closed with Eucharistic adoration and benediction, imparted by the Holy Father. The Year for Priests thus came to its final moments in the same light with which it began: with the Pope inviting his priestly brothers to Christ. In the letter with which the Holy Father proclaimed the year, he wrote, "Dear priests, Christ is counting on you. In the footsteps of the Curé of Ars, let yourselves be enthralled by him. In this way you too will be, for the world in our time, heralds of hope, reconciliation and peace!" (zenit.org)… On June 16, Pope Benedict XVI inaugurated the diocesan congress of Rome in the Basilica of St. John Lateran. (see photo right bottom)The congress, which is being held June 15-17, has as its theme this year, “'Their eyes were opened, they recognized Him and announced Him:' The Sunday Eucharist and the witness of charity.” “The faith,” said the Pope, "can never be taken for granted, because each generation needs to receive this gift through announcement of the Gospel and knowledge of the truth that Christ revealed to us. Thus the Church constantly strives to present the heritage of the faith to everyone. This also includes the doctrine on the Eucharist." Speaking about the Mass, the Pontiff explained that "when it is celebrated with respect for liturgical norms, and with adequate attention for the importance of signs and gestures, it favors and promotes the growth of Eucharistic faith." He encouraged the faithful "to rediscover the fruitfulness of Eucharistic adoration, and to ensure that our apostolic activity is not reduced to sterile activism; rather, that it be a testament to the love of God."
