June 2010

Celebrating 3 Rewarding Years TawagAwit observed its third founding anniversary on May 16, 2010. Bro Mel B Libre, Lead Servant, in his message to the chapter coordinators wrote: “On Sunday 16 May, TawagAwit will celebrate its 3rd founding anniversary. It is recalled that the pioneering members of the group signed the Vision/Mission Statements during one of the first gatherings at our former residence at Northcote, North Shore City on May 16, 2007. It has been three challenging as well as rewarding years: with members coming and going, with brethrens having to return the Philippines due to expiration of their visas, with concerts and masses, with traditional hymns and new compositions – and most importantly of gaining friends and rendering songs to the Lord.”

Message: Pope Benedict XVI in San CarloPLACE SquarePHOTO in Turin,HERE, Italy (top) Atomic Bomb: The mushroom OTHERWISE DELETE BOX explosion of the atomic bomb that destroyed Nagasaki, Japan on August 9, 1945 (below)

Vatican Notes: General Intention: That priests, united to the Heart of Christ, may always be true witnesses of the caring and merciful love of God. Missionary Intention: That the Holy Spirit may bring forth from our communities numerous missionary vocations, willing to fully consecrate themselves to spreading the Kingdom of God...Pope Benedict XVI all but gave an outright endorsement of the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, calling the cloth that some believe is Christ's burial shroud an icon "written with the blood" of a crucified man. During a visit on Sunday May 2 to the Shroud in the northern Italian city of Turin, Benedict didn't raise the scientific questions that surround the linen and whether it might be a medieval forgery. Instead, he delivered a powerful meditation on the faith that holds that the Shroud is indeed Christ's burial cloth. "This is a burial cloth that wrapped the remains of a crucified man in full correspondence with what the Gospels tell us of Jesus," Benedict said. He said the relic — one of the most important in Christianity — should be seen as a photographic document of the "darkest mystery of faith" — that of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. Benedict focused in his meditation on the message that the blood stains conveyed, saying the Shroud was "an icon written in blood; the blood of a man who was whipped, crowned with thorns, crucified and injured on his right side. "The image on the Shroud is that of a dead man, but the blood speaks of his life. Each trace of blood speaks of love and life," Benedict said. (AP)…Pope Benedict XVI asked world leaders to work calmly and seriously to control the spread of nuclear weapons "in the prospect of their complete elimination from the planet." At the end of his weekly general audience May 5, the pope made his appeal to participants at the U.N. Review Conference of Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, being held in New York May 3-28. Designed to promote nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and an equitable development of peaceful nuclear energy, the treaty can succeed only if nations respect the commitments they made in signing it, the pope said. "Peace, in fact, rests on trust and on respect for the obligations assumed and not only on a balance of forces," he said (CNS) …As the Year for Priests draws to a close, Pope Benedict XVI said a priest's foremost role is to be a shepherd to his flock, and he asked the faithful to support their priests in their task of bringing people closer to God. At his regular weekly audience in St. Peter's Square May 26, the pope said priests should follow Jesus, who he called the "supreme shepherd of souls," in their mission to "take care of the people of God, be teachers of the faith, animating and sustaining the community of Christians." The pope quoted St. Augustine in pointing out that "it is a labor of love to graze the flocks of the Lord," and that love should act as the "supreme guide in conduct for the ministers of God." In living for the benefit of his flock, the priest-shepherd must dedicate himself totally, "often going against the current, and remembering that he who is big must act like the smallest, and he who governs must act like the servant." The pope will mark the closing of the Year for Priests with a Mass at the Vatican June 11. (CNS)
