October 2012

REACHING OUT TO OTHERS Consistent in its program of reaching out to others, TawagAwit conducted Alay Laya Parish Reach Out activities in St Patrick’s Cathedral and St Benedict’s Parish both in Auckland in September 2012. On September 2, 2012 at 7pm, the St Mark’s Pakuranga chapter (see photo below) led churchgoers in singing all the songs during the Tertiary Mass sponsored by the Auckland Catholic Tertiary Chaplaincy in St Patrick’s Cathedral. The group was elated when after the mass, two youths conferred with Bro Raymond inquiring if they could join the group. Many were attracted by the delightful voices of the children who seated themselves in the front pews.

We Need You TawagAwit invites you to help in spreading God’s Word through music and otherPLACE acts of love. PHOTO HERE, OTHERWISE DELETE BOX You can be a: (1) member; (2) supporter or (3) organizer A member is one who can attend to the regular activities of the Ministry. The minimum participation are: attendance during practice sessions of songs, usually once a week or once every two weeks AND singing with the group during the assigned mass usually once a month or once every two months. A supporter is one who can donate services or resources to the Ministry. There are special events that TawagAwit organizes and the events need finances or helping hands. An organizer is one who initiates the formation of a chapter in a parish. The Ministry will provide all the assistance within its means to help in the vital task.

On September 21, 2012 at 6:30pm, Our Lady of Lourdes Glen Eden chapter offered songs during the Novena Mass for the Snr Sto Nino de Cebu at St Benedict’s Parish. The Mass also served as the Commissioning of the participants of the Life in the Spirit Seminar, thus the chapter prepared three special songs namely “Let the Fire Fall”, “Shine Jesus Shine” and “One Little Candle”. A week earlier on September 16, 2012, the Lourdes chapter delivered Bisaya missal songs in the Ethnic Mass of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Glen Eden hosted by the Katilingbang Bisaya sa New Zealand (KBNZ). The group then proceeded to Ceramco Park Function Centre to sing the invocation for the program in celebration of the Visayan Language Day. The Alay Laya program has also served as an introduction on TawagAwit to potential members. One example was the establishment of the St Patrick’s Taupo chapter when TawagAwit members travelled to Taupo to sing and to orient interested parishioners.

A REQUEST TO PRAY FOR HEALING by Bro Mel B Libre Life can at times be PLACE unfair. PH Yet there are those who accept OTO HERE, suffering without complaining. One of the members in TawagAwit was diagnosed with cancer. She has lost her hair, and told us of the pain as a result of the treatment. Yet, she finds time to attend the practices and the singing of offerings during masses. She is able to laugh at jokes; and as I heard her singing, her sweet voice exuded praise and love for God. She sees no unfairness in God. Every day I pray for the healing of Sis Elvie. To all who think that life is unfair, listen. “Do not be afraid for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” (Isaiah 43:1-2) Be confident for “(w)eeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.” (Psalm30:5) For the month of October, I ask all members of TawagAwit to include in their prayers the healing of Sis Elvie. When you gather to practice and when you sing during the Mass, offer these for our Sis Elvie. Let us ask for Blessed John Paul II, patron of our ministry, to intercede for us that God will place His healing hands upon Sis Elvie so that she will be totally healed, and that she will enjoy life in the service of her family, her community and God. God bless us all.

VATICAN NOTES: Pope’s Intentions: October 2012 General Intention: That the New Evangelization may progress in the oldest Christian countries. Missionary Intention: That the celebration of World Mission Day may result in a renewed commitment to evangelization. …. Marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the start of a special Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI called on Catholics to revive the "authentic spirit" of Vatican II by re-proposing the church's ancient teachings to an increasingly Godless modern world. The pope spoke at a special Mass in St. Peter's Square Oct. 11, half a century to the day after the opening ceremonies of Vatican II. About 400 bishops from around the world, including 15 of the 70 surviving members of the 1962-65 council, attended. Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Anglican Archbishop Rowan Williams of Canterbury attended as special guests. The observances featured ceremonies recalling milestones of Vatican II, including the enthronement of a book of the Gospels used at the original gathering and a re-presentation of the council's final "messages" to various categories of lay Catholics, such as artists, workers and women. Vatican II, Pope Benedict said, had been "animated by a desire ... to immerse itself anew in the Christian mystery so as to re-propose it fruitfully to contemporary man."… During a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto, Pope Benedict XVI formally entrusted to Mary the world Synod of Bishops and the Year of Faith. The pope was marking the 50th anniversary of Blessed John XXIII's visit to the Marian shrine, about 175 miles northeast of Rome, when he entrusted to Mary's care the Second Vatican Council, which began Oct. 11, 1962. "Fifty years on, having been called by divine providence to succeed that unforgettable pope to the See of Peter, I, too, have come on pilgrimage to entrust to the Mother of God two important ecclesial initiatives: the Year of Faith," which was to begin Oct. 11 and the Synod of Bishops, which was to open Oct. 7. About 10,000 people gathered in the square outside the Loreto shrine for the pope's morning Mass. Most of the pilgrims stood in the shadow of the shrine, protected from the sun shining in a clear blue sky…Catholics should rejoice, and not be jealous, when other Christians succeed in doing the work of the Lord, Pope Benedict XVI said. "God can do good and even amazing things outside the circle" of the Catholic Church, the pope said Sept. 30, commenting on the day's Gospel reading during his midday Angelus address. Speaking to pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of the papal villa at Castel Gandolfo, the pope quoted St. Augustine (see side photo) who said that just as there could be non-Catholic elements within the Catholic Church, "so there may be something which is Catholic outside the Catholic Church." Pope Benedict said Catholics "must not be jealous, but should rejoice if someone outside the community does good in the name of Christ." The pope said that also sometimes, within the Catholic community, people have a difficult time recognizing the good that others accomplish. "We must all always appreciate each other and value each other, praising the Lord for the infinite creativity with which he works in the church and in the world."
