VATICAN NOTES: Pope’s Intentions: September 2012 General: That politicians may always act with honesty, integrity, and love for the truth. Missionary: That Christian communities may have a growing willingness to send missionaries, priests, and lay people, along with concrete resources, to the poorest Churches … Everyone is given the grace to pray, which is the only way to have a life-giving relationship with God, Pope Benedict XVI said. Resuming his weekly general audiences after a month-long break, Pope Benedict continued his series of talks on prayer Aug. 1. The audience, which lasted less than half an hour, was held in Castel Gandolfo's main square, just outside the entrance to the papal summer villa. The Vatican said the estimated 2,000 pilgrims and visitors could not all fit inside the courtyard of the villa. Marking the feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Redemptorists and patron of moral theologians and confessors, the pope said the saint lived in "a period of great rigorism," but encouraged priests to administer the sacrament in a way that communicated "the joyful embrace of God the merciful father, who in his infinite mercy never tires of welcoming back his repentant sons." Looking at St. Alphonsus' tract "The Necessity and Power of Prayer," the pope said human life often is marked by temptations and weakness, but even the simplest prayer to God can give a person the power to resist evil and do good. "The grace to pray is given to all," the pope said. "We should not be afraid to turn to God and, filled with trust, present our requests to him with the certainty of receiving what we need." … While people obviously need to provide for their families and even make sure they get some rest and relaxation, the Gospel teaches that it's even more crucial to strengthen one's relationship with God, Pope Benedict XVI said. "Jesus wants to help people go beyond the immediate satisfaction of their material needs, important as they are," he said Aug. 5, commenting on the Sunday Gospel reading during his midday Angelus address. Jesus' mission is to open people's eyes to the possibility of an "existence that is not simply that of the daily worries" about what to eat, what to wear and how to advance in their careers, he said. "The center of existence, that which gives full meaning and solid hope to the often difficult journey (of life) is faith in Christ, an encounter with Christ," the pope told a crowd gathered in the courtyard of his summer villa for the recitation of the Marian prayer… Honoring Mary as queen, Catholics see her exercising the same kind of regality that Jesus did: one of humility, service and love, Pope Benedict XVI said. Marking the feast of the Queenship of Mary Aug. 22 at his weekly general audience, the pope said just as Jesus' kingship had nothing to do with earthly power -- in fact, Christians recognize him as king when he's on the cross -- so Mary's queenship is exercised through obedience to God and helping those who turn to her. Mary's queenship is a "consequence of her being united with her son, her being in heaven, in communion with God," the pope said. From heaven, she participates in God's love for the world. She "watches over us, her children; children who turn to her in prayer to thank her or to ask for her maternal protection and her heavenly assistance, perhaps after losing the way, oppressed by suffering or anguish," the pope said.
