BJPII Catholic Community Raise Fund As the canonization of Blessed John Paul II draws nearer, the BJPII Catholic Community in Albany, Auckland conducted a Bingo Social on August 18, 2013 for the purpose of raising funds for the current and future needs of the growing church. The activity followed the Holy Mass officiated by Fr Rory Morrisey; and shared lunch. Nearly two hundred people turned up for the fun-filled activity that not only allowed lucky individuals to win cash prizes, but also to be entertained by invited talents. Since Fr Sam Pulanco was reassigned, Fr Rory took over as chaplain in guiding the parishioners in their journey towards the establishment of a parish in one of the fastest growing suburbs in Auckland.

If we are to believe US intelligence reports, the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad ordered chemical weapons attack in Damascus that killed 1,429 people including more than 400 children. Chemical weapons have long been banned in warfare; and if indeed Assad ordered its use against his own people, he will face charges of crimes against humanity, and will join the inglorious company of Adolf Hitler (who used chemicals to kill Jews in concentration camps) and Saddam Hussein (who used chemical weapons against Iranian forces and Kurdish villagers). On 24 July 2013, the United Nations put out an estimate of over 100,000 that had died in the civil war. Also, the conflict has resulted in 1.8 million Syrians becoming refugees in Iraq, Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon, with 4 million others displaced within its borders. When will we ever learn? We have yet to experience a totally peaceful world, as conflicts arise in different countries year in, year out. One despot disappears, another one emerges. It is cyclical, and who suffers but civilians including the innocent children. On September 7 Pope Francis fasted and prayed for Syria together with hundreds of thousands of Christians across the globe. He asked, “How many conflicts, how many wars have mocked our history?” He answered his question, “Even today we raise our hand against our brother…We have perfected our weapons, our conscience has fallen asleep, and we have sharpened our ideas to justify ourselves as if it were normal we continue to sow destruction, pain, death. Violence and war lead only to death.” He continued, “Can we get out of this spiral of sorrow and death? Can we learn once again to walk and live in the ways of peace? Invoking the help of God under the maternal gaze of the Salus Populi Romani, the Queen of Peace, I say yes it is possible for everyone. From every corner of the world tonight, I would like to hear us cry out: Yes, it is possible for everyone!” Let us continue to fast, continue to pray for peace in Syria. Let us ask God to fill the minds of the leaders of the warring parties, and those who have the influence, with wisdom; and their hearts with love.

Papal Intentions September 2013 General: That people today, often overwhelmed by noise, may rediscover the value of silence and listen to the voice of God and their brothers and sisters. Missionary: That Christians suffering persecution in many parts of the world may by their witness be prophets of Christ's love...People who judge and criticize others are hypocrites and cowards who are unable to face their own defects, Pope Francis said. Gossip, too, is "criminal" as it destroys, rather than exalts the image of God present in others, he said in his early morning homily Sept. 13 at his residence of Domus Sanctae Marthae. "Those who live judging their neighbors, speaking badly of them, are hypocrites because they don't have the strength, the courage to look at their own defects," he said. "Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own," he said, referring to the day's Gospel reading according to St. Luke...What God asks of people is too difficult and demanding to do without help from Jesus and Mary, Pope Francis said. People need to lose themselves in the contemplation of Mary's sweetness and Christ's suffering in order to receive the grace necessary to live out God's will, he said in his Sept. 12 morning homily at his residence in the Domus Sanctae Marthae. What God asks of people "is not easy to live out: Love your enemies, do good to them, lend without expecting anything in return, turn the other cheek," he said. "These are tough things, right? "We, with our own strength, we can't do it. We cannot do this. Only grace can do it in us," a grace that comes from contemplating Christ, he said. The only way to live the Gospel is "to only think of Jesus. If our heart, our mind is with Jesus -- the triumphant, who was victorious over death, sin, the devil, everything -- we can do what he asks us," he said... Pope Francis gave pilgrims attending his weekly public audience Sept. 11 what he called a "homework assignment" to find out the date they were baptized and celebrate it every year. "How many of you remember the date of your baptism?" the pope asked the crowd in St. Peter's Square, and then acknowledged a relatively small show of hands. "Our baptismal date is the date of our birth in the church," he said. "When you go home today, look hard for the date of your baptism, so you can celebrate it and thank the Lord for this gift." The pope's remarks came during a talk on the subject of the church as mother, for which he mostly used the informal Italian term "mamma." "One doesn't belong to the church as to a company, a party or any other organization," he said. "The link is vital, like that one has with one's own mom, because the church is really the mother of Christians"... Repeating his recent calls for peace in the Middle East, Pope Francis urged Christians to wage a "deeper war" against evil, including the illegal arms trade that he said drives much of the world's military conflict. The pope made his remarks Sept. 8, before praying the noon Angelus with a crowd in St. Peter's Square, where the previous evening he had led a four-hour vigil for peace in Syria, the Middle East and the world. "This war against evil means saying no to fratricidal hatred, and to the lies that it uses; saying no to violence in all its forms; saying no to the proliferation of arms and their sale on the black market," the pope said... Pope Francis is leading the Catholic Church on an extraordinary campaign to prevent President Barack Obama's proposed military strike on Syria. On Sept. 4, the pope appealed to leaders of the G-20 nations to "lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution" to the Syrian civil war and promote instead a "peaceful solution through dialogue and negotiation." On Sept. 7, the pope led a prayer vigil for Syria in St. Peter's Square -- an event that the Vatican spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, said would be unprecedented, in both scale and importance of setting, as a papal gesture for peace.
