RUNNING COMMENTARY Every year, the Macon Film Festival has movies I want to watch. I’m not sure what their process for selection is, but there’s always a few that star actors I love or feature near and dear subject matter. After getting a look at the lineup, I can tell you the crew at the MFF have out done themselves. I even got to preview a couple of myself, and you’re gonna wanna see ‘em. I don’t think I could be an actor. Whatever it is that one needs to step out of his actual existence and into fantasy-- that doesn’t seem too tough. But climbing back out and into the really real? Sounds like it could become hazardous over time. In my interview with Freaks directors Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, Zach talks about an actor having “endurance”. I think maybe that’s what he meant in regards to the young star of his film, Lexy Kolker. In the movie (spoilers abound in this whole issue so beware), Lexy’s character struggles with the very question of reality-- as she experiences it physically and how she imagines it could be. That’s one of the many things I like about movies. Sometimes they speak to my dreams… And other times to my nightmares. Why do we watch movies that frighten us? Or make us feel wretched and disgusted? My friend Chi Chi once told me it’s because movies that take us into the pit or drown us in despair remind us how lucky we are to be alive. She’s the only person I know who watched Requiem For A Dream multiple times. I don’t recall any snakes-- or much of the experience really-- but when we were kids, my sister and I attended a church that “took up serpents.” Truth be told, it wasn’t until she reminded me about it that I thought about it all. Them That Follow is another official festival selection that I got to watch in preparation for my interview with Walton Goggins. In it, Goggins plays a Pentecostal minister who proves his faith by handling poisonous snakes during worship. But in reality, Walton is terrified of snakes. In that fantasy world though, he was able to harness his character’s commitment to God as his own… I don’t know what kind of movies you like, but I do know the Macon Film Festival has it all-- even movies that defy genre and type. Just check out the fulldome and immersive films for experiences that are evolving as I write this. Comedies, documentaries, dramas, action and sci-fi, animation… It’s all in there. Oh, and don’t forget to show some love to our local, homegrown talent when the Macon Shorts showcase takes place at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday, August 17th.

50,000 SHADES OF GRAY KENNY ROGERS & DOTTIE WEST Chicago Opera House, Fall ‘77
This was one of my first assignments for the Chicago Tribune and bein’ a newby, I was very early. Got there for soundcheck, hung around till Kenny invited me back to his dressing room afterwords. We talked photography (he had actually shot several LP covers for other folks) and the music business. During the show, I got the shots and the paper was happy with the results. Six years later, I was shootin’ another Kenny Rogers event for his record label-- a meet & greet after a show at the Chicago Stadium. The record company dudes herded all 30 guests (and me) into the huge locker room for the Grip n’ Grin session. Kenny saw me from across the room, came up, greeted me by name said, "It looks like your career is goin well!” After the session he had me wait til folks had gone... Then offered me a job shootin’ for him. I worked for 8 months shootin' events. I never really cared for his music, but he was a very sweet cat and a champ to work for.

DOWNTOWN DIVERSITY INITIATIVE Downtown Macon is the cultural intersection of Macon-Bibb County. A place where people of every race, color, and creed come to celebrate life-- however, Alex Habersham, owner of the MaconMiddle Georgia Black Pages & Resource Guide, noticed something odd: Downtown Macon has very few businesses owned and operated by African-American entrepreneurs. He applied for and was awarded $50,000 from the Community Foundation of Central Georgia’s Downtown Challenge grant to incorporate a development program to diversify the downtown business landscape. NewTown Macon partnered with him to launch this initiative to attract more AfricanAmerican business owners and customers to our urban core. Several entrepreneurs attended a series of workshops led by local experts and pitched their business plans to be considered for a prize package that included funds for advertising and starting their businesses. Five winners were selected: Nathalie Armand-Bradley: ModPunch will offer virtual interior design and organizing services. Arrkeicha Danzie: Good Boy Goodies is an all-natural dog treat available at Travis Jean Emporium and throughout Downtown Macon. Darrin Ford: A Brook Haven will be an upscale bar and lounge for professionals. Beverly Pitts: Carbel Beauty Plus will offer beauty products and services. Brandon Woodford: Wizdum Clothing will be a retail clothing and graphic design service. Arrkeicha Danzie explained, “It was an amazing experience that made me give a lot of thought to my idea but also gave me the steps to make my dream a reality. This program showed me how to take my idea from the infant stage to a viable business.” Alex Habersham will be conducting a series of workshops for local businesses beginning on September 16 at NewTown Macon. The workshop will begin at 8:30am and focus on attracting AfricanAmerican customers to established businesses in Downtown Macon. All downtown businesses are encouraged to attend.
BY SCOTT MITCHELL Scott Mitchell is the owner of Travis Jean Emporium and is the co-host of Deconstructing Divas on 100.9 The Creek. He enjoys spending time with his family and furbabies, volunteering, gardening, traveling, watching Broadway shows, and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs.

WALTON GOGGINS: Snakes & Venus You know him, you love him… Well, sometimes you love to hate him, but Walton Goggins is one of the best walkin’ around on God’s green earth today. Whether he’s the good guy, the bad guy, or just the guy with the gun, Goggins elevates every role and every project he’s a part of. This fall, he’ll be returning to network television with The Unicorn on CBS and he’ll reunite with his Vice Principals nemesis Danny McBride for HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones… But before that, you can see Walton Goggins in Them That Follow, a dark, earthy drama set in the mountains of Appalachia and premiering Friday, August 16th as part of the Macon Film Festival.
18 AUGUST 16-29, 2019
AI- You've got a film coming to Macon, part of our festival, Them That Follow... In the film you play a pastor, Lemuel Childs who preaches the serpent and the drinking of the poison and all of that. You grew up in Georgia. Was it rural Georgia? Did you ever experience any of that yourself? WG- I grew up in a little town just west of Atlanta, only about 18 miles from downtown, but it was still a relatively small town, Lithia Springs, Georgia. And I'd never been to a snake handling church. I did visit and frequent my fair share of Pentecostal churches and a number of different churches, really. Both Christian and nondenominational and secular. My mother was a big, forward-thinking spiritualist. So I had them all kind of floating in my head as a kid. But I will never forget the first time that I walked into a Pentecostal church and I felt the way that I felt, you know? They say that the spirit is in that room and when the spirit is in that room you feel it on a molecular level. And I certainly did.
Having had that experience, a lot of your roles, you get to quote a lot of scripture. Is that something that you retained? Two roles, two roles-- and no. I had access and an entree into these worlds and I got to see a lot of different personalities up there giving their interpretation of verse and what that meant. I happened to come across a lot of unbelievably dynamic people in my life and my childhood especially. But no, there was no one verse or no one thing that I kept with throughout my life. I suppose it was all of them. It was just a feeling.
By Aaron Irons
And that oftentimes isn't encapsulated in one passage from any religious script. It's the feeling that stays with you.
So I have to ask about the snakes in particular. I heard that perhaps, maybe those are not your favorite things, the snakes? Man, I am not scared of many things, but snakes is high on that f-----g list. Like on the three things that I'm scared of. Snakes is.... I'm scared of them the most, you know? Like a lot of people, I have never been able to overcome that fear. Even walking in the woods, even being in South Africa recently for a period of time and walking through tall grass, it's always in the back of your mind-- and it's right there for me anyway. It's an underlying fear. And when I agreed to do Them That Follow, I knew that I would have to handle snakes. They said that right out of the gate, but I didn't really believe them, you know? Until we only had two days left to go and the last two days, the day finally came. I couldn't believe that I was actually doing this. And the only way that I was able to do it was as Lemuel Childs not as Walton Goggins. I couldn't have picked him up.
I was watching it and I really, I tried to see if there was a look in your eye or a betrayal in the way you held your body when you were lifting these large snakes into the air. What kind of snakes were they? They were non-poisonous snakes and they were snakes that looked like poisonous snakes. They weren't poisonous and they didn't have teeth. They were really kind of incapable of biting you or else we couldn't have made the movie.
But I didn't see... There was zero fear in your eye or in your body language when you were picking those up. Well, thank you very much for saying that, buddy. That's with a lot of faith.
Do you feel better about snakes now after having handled them in the film? No. What I do feel is‌ There are many takeaways from Them That Follow and many of them are heartfelt and resonate on a very deep level. But the one thing that I will not do is take another movie with snakes in it! I just won't! I did it. I had it and I don't need to do it again.
I want to ask you about a couple of different roles that you've played in your career. House of 1000 Corpses... There is the, well, your [Deputy Nash's] demise. The execution scene in that film, this long drawn out raising to the sky. Was that a difficult thing to stand? Because it was very disturbing to watch and it was something that a buddy of mine always commented on and I figured if I ever had the chance, I was going to ask you about that scene. Well, first and foremost, I was just so taken with Rob. He's such a visual artist and he is so visceral. He elicits such a visceral reaction to what he does. When we were filming that and he was playing that song and you know, I've been around a long time and I know what
it's like when someone that has that level of talent is excited This is something that he had meditated on and thought about for a very long time. And this was a shot that meant everything to him. And I was just grateful to be in it, to be quite honest with you. I thought that it would resonate visually. I didn't know what would the camera was seeing, but I had a very good idea of what the camera was seeing and lo and behold that shot still holds up. I see It played on loops at parties that I go to, and yeah, it was just a very cool experience. A very cool movie to be a part of, and I just think the world of Rob Zombie.
Next one, Venus Van Dam. People have got to ask you about that one all the time. How much fun was that? Yeah, man. You know, that role... That's my girl. I never met the cast members of Sons of Anarchy as Walton while we were working. They were all really good friends of mine. We were on FX at the same time for a very long time, and I know all of them pretty damn well. But out of respect for me and my process, they never addressed me as Walton and I never addressed them by their first names. We were only ever in this world as the characters from SOA and Venus Van Dam. So in some ways, I, Walton, don't feel like I ever did that. I think that Venus is a real human being that exists in the world and is in The Valley right now.
And may possibly come back to life one day? Yeah. Well, you never know, man!
I knew that I would have to handle snakes. They said that right out of the gate, but I didn't really believe them, you know? Until we only had two days left to go and the last two days, the day finally came. I couldn't believe that I was actually doing this. And the only way that I was able to do it was as Lemuel Childs not as Walton Goggins

The Retro POPEYE: THE ORIGINAL JUMPMAN When thinking of the Golden Age of the arcade, it’s hard to picture that world without Nintendo. The iconic blue cab has housed some of America’s favorite games and characters. However, there was a time when Nintendo floundered in the American arcade scene. During the late ’70s and early ’80s, Nintendo struggled to capitalize on several moderately successful games made for the Japanese market. Many were basic design copies of other popular games such as Breakout, Galaxian, and Head On. For most gamers, their first encounter with a cabinet from “The Big N” is the game that took America by storm in 1981, Donkey Kong. This, however, is not the story of Donkey Kong. This is the story of the game that made Nintendo’s most prolific cabinet possible, Popeye-- the sailor man with the corncob pipe, a love for leafy greens, and a rather broad nemesis named Bluto. My love for Popeye came as a kid pouring through an old VHS collection that had been passed to me from my dad. Fast forward to adulthood, with a newfound passion for arcade hardware, I found a blue Nintendo cab with the simple round side art of the early ‘80s. Full color with a corncob pipe and permanent wink was the sailor himself. I stepped up and got ready to side scroll my way to a cheek kiss from the pixelated Olive Oyl. I was not disappointed. A single-screen platformer, Popeye is similar in many ways to Nintendo’s major success, Donkey Kong-- but with its own lovingly crafted sprites and a challenging but interesting objective set. Those with a passion for Nintendo’s home consoles will know the company’s most prolific designer, Shigeru Miyamoto (Super Mario Bros, Zelda, and Star Fox). Before the creation of these properties, however, Nintendo had a ton of unwanted Radar Scope cabinets they needed to fill. They needed a new property and asked their employees for
ideas. Miyamoto, a young artist and designer, had a passion for the theater reels of MGM, namely the Adventures of Popeye. A favorite episode featured a sleepwalking Olive stumbling into an active construction site with Popeye in hot pursuit. He jumps girders, moves equipment, and raises elevators to keep her from harm. Sound familiar? Nintendo sought the rights to Popeye’s image from King Features, but with few large-scale commercial successes, their offer was declined. This forced the company to redesign the art and characters. Leaning on other inspirations, Miyamoto kept much of his original level design, creating one of the first narrative game experiences. Ape loves girl, ape takes girl, humble hero attempts to rescue girl, and thus, Donkey Kong was born. One year later, with Donkey Kong consuming American quarters at an unprecedented rate and Miyamoto now coming into his own as a designer, Nintendo made another offer to King Features. This time Nintendo got it. Splitting his time between a sequel to the wildly popular Donkey Kong and his passion project, Miyamoto released an incredibly original and fun game that again tells a story. Pulling characters and settings from several episodes and the funny papers, it tells the classic tale of the damsel in distress. Popeye helped to propel Nintendo into the American market while cementing its design philosophy for the next decade. With licensing around Popeye and his pal’s currently spread across several entities and a looming legal battle for broadcasting rights in the UK, it’s unlikely we will ever see an artistic remaster of this game. Next time you’re in to Reboot Retrocade & Bar make it a point to play an original cab. Step up and give a tip of the cap to the Sailor Man who inspired the guy that helped save an industry. And always remember your can of spinach. Toot Toot!

BO TALKS Lessons on Guilt and Pleasure
28 AUGUST 16-29, 2019
There are eye-opening moments all around. Often, I find strangely deep lessons in what others might perceive to be mundane. When my children became old enough to develop their own opinions about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I suddenly realized how representative those allegiances are of our own personalities. I was always a Michelangelo guy. We were party dudes! I never in a million years thought I’d be raising two Raphael diehards, but it changed the way I looked at our attitudes and interactions. For those unaware readers, Raphael is notoriously hot-headed and impulsive. In a way, it warned me. It wasn’t the Ninja Turtles that got me thinking recently, but rather, Sixpence None The Richer. Somewhere during the second verse, while singing along to their 1997 hit, “Kiss Me,” I realized I’ve mostly outgrown “guilty pleasures.” I’m sure my coworkers cherish my vocal stylings, but even more than that, it didn’t matter that knowing the words and enjoying them so openly would almost definitely be seen as lame. Moreover, I wasn’t alone in my appreciation for the song that graced the Dawson’s
Creek soundtrack. I see people all around embracing weird and unusual things or just things contrary to potential perceptions about them. I love it. Let those freak flags fly, I say! When I was attending boarding school as a youth, there was a particular freshman who got bullied pretty badly. I received my fair share, but he got it far worse-and more often. One specific instance that escalated beyond anything we could have seen coming was a discussion about favorite movies. The freshman proudly declared his unyielding adoration for the science-fiction/ horror film, Event Horizon. At the time, it was a fairly new movie, but this was a prestigious academy. The fact that he didn’t choose some obvious classic like The Godfather, Taxi Driver, or A Clockwork Orange brought immediate and brutal ridicule. Despite numerous opportunities to change his stance, the freshman maintained his love for the gory haunted spaceship story. I didn’t understand it, but I always admired that about him. He liked what he liked, and to hell with the haters, consequences be damned!
And believe me, there were actual consequences that day. There’s so much of our short time on earth wasted by being embarrassed or feeling like we shouldn’t enjoy something that’s ultimately harmless. I would say ultimately superficial as well, but it’s obviously not as superficial as it might seem. When we embrace our guilty pleasures and cast aside the superimposed guilt, the seemingly banal pleasures we engage in can sometimes teach us surprising truths. Unusual inspiration is what makes us unique and has the potential to deconstruct stereotypes. Save your guilt for the things in life that truly deserve it-- like broken promises and being obsessed with White Claw Hard Seltzer.
Bo Walker is a writer who likes what he likes and has no actual problem with White Claw beverages. In fact, he finds that mixing different combinations of the flavors is a real, fun way to keep them interesting after you’ve gotten burned out on each one individually.
House Talk
It’s Not If You Get Termites, It’s When You Get Termites!
Anyone who lives in Middle Georgia needs to have a termite bond on their house. Given our wonderfully warm (read that hot) and humid climate, we live in the sweet spot for termites. So do yourselves a favor and have your house checked out. The termite companies will also be checking for wood-decaying fungus (wood rot) due to moisture under the house. Traditionally if you have wood-decaying fungus (and most of us do), the proper approach is to install plastic over the soil, keep your gutters clean and keep your vents open. If there is heavy fungus, then it can be treated. This is all in a price range of $500 to about $1500… However… Let’s move on to the latest and greatest thing: Crawlspace Encapsulation Systems (CAPS). These started coming on the scene about 15 years ago to deal with chronically wet crawlspaces. The system includes installing a thick vapor barrier over the soil and up the foundations and piers. All the joints and overlaps are completely sealed to prevent soil moisture from entering. The foundation vents are sealed to keep moist air out and finally, a special dehumidifier is installed to remove any humidity. A dehumidifier is a refrigeration unit designed to remove the moisture from the air and drain it outside A properly installed system works very well-- but they can be wildly expensive! Get ready for a hard sell!
Ned Dominick has been inspecting homes and watching people get ripped off in Macon, Warner Robins, and all Middle Georgia since 1978. He and his qualified inspectors have examined over 28,000 local homes. For more go to Ned’s website at www.housetalk.net or give him a call at 478-738-0893.
Recently, I was asked to check on one of these setups. The home belonged to an older couple who had asked a termite company to check for termites. Although the termite man found no termites or any signs of wood-decaying fungus (due to moisture), he still succeeded in selling these folks this completely unneeded and expensive system ($22,000) for their house. The company arrived, installed the system including the dehumidifier and left. About a year later somebody crawled up under their home (perhaps a plumber) and was horrified to find that the crawlspace was a literal sweatbox dripping with moisture
on all surfaces. Large puddles had accumulated on the plastic vapor barrier and worse- much worse; the wood floor system was now covered with a thick layer of wood-decaying fungus! The couple was horrified and started to go to war with the company-- which is where I came in. What appears to have happened is that either the dehumidifier was broken or the drain was disconnected so that all the moisture drained right back into the crawlspace to create the same condition as a refrigerator after the power goes off. Nasty! By the time I came to inspect, the dehumidifier had been fixed and the area was dry, but the wood-decaying fungus was still covering the floor system and will need another expensive treatment to remove it. This whole thing made me really grouchy. I hate it when so-called “experts” sell trusting vulnerable people expensive things that they don’t need. These folks also like to prey on single women and other seemingly defenseless folks. Crawlspace encapsulation is only necessary in a handful of cases when regular methods such as good foundation ventilation, a plastic vapor barrier, and gutters will not reduce the crawlspace humidity. This is an extreme measure for extremely bad situations. Most crawlspaces can be dried up for hundreds of dollars not tens of thousands. To make things even worse, if something happens to that dehumidifier then the crawlspace will become a nightmare. For example, you have moved out of town or the home was foreclosed upon and the power was turned off for a few months so that the dehumidifier is turned off… Disaster. Go slow on the seemingly high tech, complex solutions that people may try to sell you. They may be way more trouble than they are worth.

THE Z BEANS STORY
THE EVOLUTION OF A TOURIST: PART 1
BY SHANE BUERSTER
“Can a person who has been brought up in the heart of a thick dark forest, where one had to beat a path through multiple layers of trees just to take a letter to the post office, have any conception of what it’s like to spend one’s entire childhood waiting for a single tree to grow?” – Greenhouse
There lies a significant difference between a tourist and a cosmopolitan. Their motives are different, their beliefs are different, and their actions are different. When I first went to Zaruma, Ecuador during the summer of 2016, I was mesmerized by the incredible views, the communal culture, and the work ethic of the people. I knew if the opportunity ever presented itself, I’d love to work on a developmental project in the region. But the idea seemed so distant. Heck, even I seemed distant. I was nothing like them. Or was I? Arturo and I trekked up and down the side of the Andes, looking for different farmers in the region. He told us the trips would only be a mile or two long, but that wasn’t the case. We walked for what seemed like forever. I was thirsty, hungry, and tired. He wasn’t. I struggled to walk the steep slopes. He didn’t. I complained. He wouldn’t. I was 21… Arturo was 65. I knew the value of hard work. I learned it from my father at an early age. I began cutting grass when I was 7, helping Ricky, one of my father’s employees. Eventually, I started building my own client base outside of Dad’s work. I had ten yards that I cut in my neighborhood. No matter how many yards I added to the list, my dad never left my side. He always helped me cut grass on the weekends. He said that his father always did the same for him, so he was paying it forward. But I knew the real reason. My father and I are identical. We live to work.

30 AUGUST 16-29, 2019
Arturo told me stories. He told me how he became so accustomed to walking the steep slopes of the Andes. He’d walk 10 miles a day with 100-pound sacks on his back, hoping to earn a tad bit more than the typical $20 a day. No one else was willing to make the long-distance hikes, but he was. He told me stories of his days in the mines as well. He’d pick at the side of the mountain, hoping to strike gold. For years, he walked away empty-handed, but one day he finally came across a few ounces of the prized metal. He reached down to pick it up, but it was quickly snatched out from underneath him. He walked away from the mine that day like he had every other one-- with a mere $25 dollars in his pocket. The 3-week long Mercer On Mission tour during the Summer of 2016 came to an end, and I was forced to leave. Arturo had asked me the night before to exchange WhatsApp numbers. He wanted to stay in touch, and I obliged, assuming nothing would really come out of it. These realizations, these friendships, and these events will end up as memories that I recollect one day... Mere stories that I get to tell my children. I'm a tourist. I've marveled and I've witnessed. I've experienced-- but, I never became. I returned to The States on June 5, 2016. I stayed in Macon a few days to complete our assignment for Mercer On Mission then I returned to Pooler, Georgia, my hometown. That was that.

ON FREAKS & FRIENDS: ADAM B. STEIN & ZACH LIPOVSKY By Aaron Irons
Warning: This interview does contain spoilers! Among the many fine selections at this year's Macon Film Festival, a particular gem worth your time is the genre-bending Freaks directed by best friends Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky. Freaks begins with the daily goings-on between a young daughter and her father, shut-ins who shun the outside world and an unnamed danger. But that’s not where it ends... Featuring outstanding performances from stars Emile Hirsch, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and the legendary Bruce Dern, the film also introduces the world to the wonderful Lexy Kolker. I was able to catch up with the directors, Adam and Zach, and they were gracious enough to answer a few questions ahead of the Macon premiere of Freaks on Friday, August 16th. AI- One of the amazing things about Freaks-- which I just got to view, and it's coming to the Macon Film Festival next week-you guys have done a lot with, as I understand, very little. This is a beautiful movie. Gorgeous. Tell me about some of your challenges in dealing with something along the horror/sci-fi. AS- We've always been big sci-fi fans and horror fans, and we were kind of two struggling filmmakers trying to make our way in the business and trying to get movies made. We just got together and said, "Alright, we don't have a lot of money. We don't have a studio behind us, but what kind of story can we tell-- in this world-- that we could tell with a limited budget. I was a new dad at the time. I had a five-year-old and I was so fascinated by watching my kid kind of start to understand the
world. And we thought, "Well, what if we told this story through the perspective of a child?" And as Chloe is starting to try to understand the world, the audience is right with her. So that was kind of the inspiration for the idea. From the beginning of this film, the whole time I'm watching the character, Chloe, interact with her father and being shut in this house, and you're not really sure what's going on... All I wanted to do was get up and go get my daughter out of bed and hug her. AS- (Laughs) Yeah! But then things started to take a very dark turn. Lexi Kolker, who did a fantastic job [as Chloe]‌ What was it like working with a young actor in that situation? ZL- Adam and I have done a lot of work with kids. We've done a lot of work with Disney and stuff like that. And obviously, this film has a very different tone, a much darker tone. But we still made sure the set was a very fun, happy place with a lot of love and support and people all around. It's kind of funny... When we show the movie to audiences, when [Lexi's] there at Q & A's, she's so bubbly and happy and charming. And when she's not there, usually the first question is, "Is that girl okay? Is she in therapy?" One of the reasons we hired her is she's so mature, not only in the ability to kind of tap into just deep, real emotions, but then also as soon as you say cut, to come out of it in a very healthy way.
AS- And knowing that it's pretend. ZL- Yeah. And being excited by the possibility of doing really deep and mature work. That was something that was exciting to her rather than scary or upsetting. In the process of auditioning, that was something we were really looking for... To make sure we had someone who had the endurance to be able to go to these places and be super intense, but then also enjoy it and have fun. And she had a lot of friends. She had her sister on set, who's an actress as well, and her family and, and even Emile [Hirsch] and Bruce [Dern] were very nurturing to her. AS- About what you were saying with your daughter... We wanted to capture something about fatherhood. When I was trying to figure out how to be a dad, I would have these insecurities about like, "I don't know how to do this! This is too hard!" I have a wife who's amazing and I have role models who are great parents. I read some books and I took some classes, and we just kind of started to think-- what if I had none of that, you know? Emile Hirsch's character, he's trapped in this house for seven years with no partner, with no education of how to be a dad, with no support network or role models-- or babysitters! And he's just exhausted and not very good at it but still loves her. That kind of messy, sort of ugly but still loving version of fatherhood was something that we were really interested in capturing. The directing duo, that's something that you have seen a lot of in the last

few years. When did you two meet and how did you know that, "Well, this is a partnership we want to take to this level."? ZL- We met 12 years ago, and it was actually on a reality television show. It was a competition run by Steven Spielberg called On The Lot. It was kind of like American Idol, but for directing. So we made a different short film every week and America would vote and send one of us home. Adam and I were competitors trying to outperform each other. The reality show didn't do very well because when you get a bunch of indie filmmakers together, all they do is just like help each other and hang out. There's not a lot of drama. We ended up just becoming best friends. We went off and directed separately for years and just struggled to try and get stuff going. We had some successes and we worked on certain things, but it was always sort of "directing for hire" and other people's projects.
happen in this world. But for this movie, because we had limited resources, we realized we had to focus on this one slice of the world and tell the story of this one family. Really, what happens next depends on people like you. Because the movie's coming out in theaters September 13th, which is Friday the 13th. It's going to be in theaters around the country and if people go see it and buy tickets then... Maybe someone will give us enough money to make another one. But if people don't go see it then there won't be more. It's in the hands of the public now. I hope that everybody goes to see it. I'm certainly gonna push everybody towards it for the Macon Film Festival. Tabitha Walker, who's, of course, part of the festival and who has fantastic taste, talked highly of the film. So I was looking forward to seeing it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have one last question for you. In the film, what happened in Dallas?
We both got to the place where we had done some smaller stuff together, and we were really frustrated that none of the things that we wanted to make were getting made. We just made a pledge to ourselves that we were gonna make a movie together no matter what. And the first part of that was making a movie that could be made for $0 if it had to be. In the initial version of Freaks, Adam and I were going to play the two lead roles, Adam was gonna play the father and I was going to play what was then an uncle-- and Adam's son was going to be the kid! We were just going to shoot it in his house with for $0 and no one’s help because we just wanted to make a movie no matter what that was in our voice.
(Both laugh)
We just felt like we had to show the world what we could do. Luckily, as we started working on it, it started growing as people started getting excited by it and eventually, we were able to get a casting director... You know, Bruce Dern was one of the first big actors to read it-- and he was the first one to say he wanted to do it. He ultimately played my role, so I'm very thankful for that. Once we had him, it went on to get other bigger actors like Emile and Amanda [Crew] and Grace [Park], and the film got bigger. But at every step, we always had creative control and we always could make the movie with whatever we had. There was never a point where we needed more than we had. And that was really important to us all the way through, to make sure that it was our movie. 'Cause this was our one chance to show the world what our voice was.
ZL- And that led them to making freak children basically illegal and killed on sight.
It has elements of a thriller, science fiction, it's got lots of horror involved with it. It's also a film where you've managed to develop a universe that could stand a bit more exploration. You've got lots of questions that never get answered. It might be premature at this point to ask, but will we see the freaks again? AS- We were really excited about creating this world and we had lots and lots of ideas for other characters and other situations that could
AS- Well, that's very interesting. Yeah. Well, what do you think happened? I can speak freely? What do I think happened? Did Mary blow it up? Is that what happened? AS- Maybe. I think in our world there's sort of a debate about what happened, you know? The official line of the government is that freak children were free and loose in Dallas and blew the place up. They didn't have control of their powers and they're very unpredictable and in a fit of rage, one of them just destroyed the city...
AS- That was kind of the 9/11 of this world that changed all the laws to crack down on these people. However... ZL- That's if you believe what the government says...
Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky
Lexy Kolker as "Chloe"
AS- There's also a potential conspiracy theory going on where maybe the truth is that freak children might've been loose in Dallas and the government was so scared of them that they nuked the city and blamed it on the freaks. ZL- One of the great things is that we showed the film at the Dallas Film Festival And we were very curious to see what the reaction was going to be. AS- We thought people might be upset like, "Why did you destroy Dallas?!" ZL- The reaction was something we never could have planned, which was everyone loved it and thought that we changed it for every city we screened it in. (Laughs) Which we should have said yes to, but they were like, "That's crazy! You made it Dallas for us!"

1. REQUIRED LISTENING
RIDIN’ DIRTY, UGK Southern hip hop has gone through many phases in its relatively short lifespan. Upbeat, grimy, horn-laden... If you like it, there is a Southern artist out there that fills the void. Through all of that, one group and one album have been credited with laying the foundation of what the genre is all about: The Underground Kingz, or UGK as their fans refer to them, and their third release on the Jive Records imprint, Ridin’ Dirty. Hailing from Port Arthur, Texas, artists Bun B and Pimp C lyrically illustrate a story of betrayal, loss, and the trappings of street life with soulful, bass guitar-heavy tracks that draw you into their world. The album begins with the hip hop classic “One Day”, where the combination of a heavy blues melody and vocals reminiscent of the legendary Ron Isley creates an environment for the dynamic duo to tell their story of close calls and drama. “Diamonds & Wood” explores a love of diamond rings, wood-grain steering wheels, and classic automobiles. Over the decades, this album has been referred to as one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time and can be credited for inspiring other Southern artists including Ludacris, T.I., Young Jeezy, Goodie Mob, and even Outkast. This is the type of album where you ease into the car, roll the windows down, start from the beginning, and let the Texas veterans take you on a journey. Take my word for it. 2. READ THIS
OOGY: THE DOG ONLY A FAMILY COULD LOVE Dog stories don’t have to be sad. Marley and Me, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip, etc. are all deemed “sad” because they show the pup’s whole, great life, including the… End. This story begins where Oogy’s old life ended as a bait dog, pulled nearly lifeless from a fighting ring. After a severalhour-long surgery in a human hospital, the author, Larry Levin, adopts the Dogo Argentino puppy and gives him a new life-- despite Oogy being “the oddest-looking dog they’d ever seen.” So I guess this story’s classified under the “happy-tears” genre of sad. Focusing on both Oogy’s transformation and the Levin’s family, Oogy is a symbolic, adopted brother to Levin’s adopted twin sons—a “third twin” as they called him. When he compares his boy’s “E.T.” babyfaces to Oogy’s scarred visage and missing ear, Levin affirms Oogy’s place in the family, that animal lives are of equal value to ours. Levin loves the family he has found. To my surprise, Levin is a lawyer and not a full-time writer, and this is his only book, besides one on lawyer practices. Madelyn Rueter
3. WATCH THIS THE BOYS
Garth Ennis’ work has had a tough time outside of the pages of a comic book… His defining take on The Punisher was ridiculously botched in an early incarnation of the MCU and his beloved Preacher was watered down and repackaged for television in what can only be labeled as a failed attempt to appeal
to a mass audience. As a creator, Ennis’ characters range from the heroically flawed to the bizarrely damaged… Truth is, you never know what you’re gonna get with Ennis-- but you know it’s gonna be hardcore. So it was with The Boys, an unorthodox deconstruction of superheroes and celebrity culture that found the capes barely containing their depravity or disdain for the simple humans they supposedly protect. Adapted as an Amazon Original, the series follows Hughie Campbell (played by Jack Quaid, son of Dennis Quaid & Meg Ryan) as he loses his girlfriend in a horrific superhero “accident”. Recruited by a crew of anti-supe mercs, Hughie stumbles into a world of corporate propaganda and murder masquerading as patriotism. It’s dark comedy with a shameless soul and explicit action, but the satire and performances are on point. Karl Urban makes the most of every scene as Billy Butcher, the leader of “The Boys”, and Antony Starr is fantastically abhorrent as the corporate Ubermensch, Homelander. Simon Pegg and Elisabeth Shue co-star wonderfully. My suggestion? Watch the show then pick up The Boys in trade paperback.

4. GEORGIA INDEPENDENT PRO WRESTLING
Oh, the aroma of the concession stand, the flash of the entranceway lights... And the crisp sound of a flush chair shot to the back of an unsuspecting foe! A live wrestling event is always a one-of-a-kind experience. Macon has been in a live wrestling void since the demise of Atlanta based promotion WCW and the cancellation of studio wrestling on our local affiliates decades ago. You can imagine my surprise when I recently stumbled upon a flyer advertising a local wrestling show in Downtown Macon. The promotion in charge of the event was Georgia Independent Pro Wrestling. Intrigued, I had to see what this was all about. The action began with a heavyweight title match that featured the champion Tony James versus a seven-foot-tall challenger. These two titans moved with surprising agility and even took to the ringside floor for a brawl which resulted in the challenger being thrown into a concrete pillar. The champion was resilient and finally pinned the big man capping off a surprising first match. Another early highlight was Alex Chase versus John Forge. Forge was described as a “mean man” by a fan at ringside-- and he only seemed to live up to that description with a series of chokes, eye gouges and a regimen of outside weapons which found their mark. After about 10 minutes, Forge mercifully pinned his opponent to bring to an end an old fashioned donnybrook. The remainder of the night’s card featured a tag team match, high flying lightweight action, and a match highlighted with thumbtacks, and of course, the always trusty steel chair. To see the action live, check out GIPW’s Facebook page for dates, and stop by prowrestlingtees.com for merch. Matt Lang, 100.5 The X
