athlete. When she’s not kicking extra points, you can usually find her on the soccer field. She is also commonly known as “Bobo,” a nickname given to her by her father, Donn.
• Elizabeth already has fans—people following her journey on
social media and little ones who draw pictures of her kicking to give her after games. Rodenroth also spends her time volunteering with Special Olympics sailing at Lake Tobosofkee.
• She has had a successful year so far, going 16-18 in PAT’s and knocking through her first field goal in her team’s 16-10 win over West Laurens on September 28th.

RUNNING COMMENTARY THIS, FRIENDS, IS THE LAST 11TH HOUR. Wait… Whaaaa? How? Why? Now, don’t go freakin’ out and pullin’ a Hudson on me (“We’re in some real pretty s--t, man! Game over!”), but this has been in the works for a while. Back in the Spring of 2018, my initial excitement at becoming editor was more than balanced by my fear over the validity of print in the digital age. There had been some discussion that maybe, just maybe we should consider taking the 11th Hour digital, but no one was quite ready to pull the trigger. Well, kids, the day has arrived… And I haven’t been this excited about my job since 100.9 The Creek went live and I cut my first Honky Tonk Hell. (Shameless plug: HTH every Tuesday night @ 7pm and presented by the ever lovin' Ingleside Village Pizza!)
WE’RE GOING DIGITAL! And beyond that, we’ll be rolling out a brand new name and website in the coming months. We won’t be changing our aim or content. Music and pop culture, the Central Georgia community, our dining, shopping, and nightlife will continue to be the focus of everything we do-- we’re just going to do more! I honestly feel this is a giant moonsault in the right direction and while I’ll certainly miss holding the 11th Hour in my hands, I’m committed to bringing you the best interviews, reviews, and stories possible. Yeah, yeah, yeah… But what’s the new name? Sound and Soul. Some of you may raise an eyebrow ( I might even hear a giggle or two), but no other two words in the English language capture this part of the world than those: Sound and Soul. It’s in the songs we sing and write and the struggles we endure. It’s in the legacy of our local businesses and our future as a diverse and thriving community. Sound and Soul will be real soon enough, but it already means everything to me because we will never run out of stories to tell-- and soon, you and I will have a place to share them with the rest of the planet! For 18 years, the 11th Hour has told the story of Central Georgia, our music and our culture, our successes and our failures. The 11th Hour has been so many things to so many people that it would be impossible for me to make any attempt to qualify its existence within the confines of this commentary. I’ve been fortunate to be a part of it, cursed to love it, and blessed to share it with all of you. The Quiet Knight was a very cool 2nd-floor venue featuring folk, blues, and what's now called ‘roots’ music. Very nice joint. Several smaller rooms and stained glass windows in the main room. Tom Waits played there regularly and stayed at the SRO hotel next door, a real dive wine-o place to sleep… Muddy Waters played there-- and the Stones showed up there that night! The house band was the Siegel- Schwall Blues Band playin’ every Tuesday. Folk & Blues was the story at the Knight. Townes always packed the place with quiet drinkers & urban depressives… I think this photo tells the tale.

CREATING VISIBILITY AND DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE “When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people?” — Frank Borman, Retired NASA Astronaut I must admit that I often find myself wearing rose-colored glasses and looking for the best in my community. Downtown Macon has always been a melting pot for me-- a place where all people in Middle Georgia come to have fun and enjoy life. Whether it is First Friday or a Macon Bacon game, a nice dinner or a night out at a show, my view of Macon is one of inclusivity and diversity. One of the reasons for this view is the hiring practices of local small businesses. Hiring that is representative of all people in our society is so important to the viability and success of small businesses. This means including people of all ages, sexes, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, and race. There are several businesses and organizations downtown that are shining examples of visibility in the workforce, but my favorite is the staff at Visit Macon. Steven Fulbright is the Director of Tourism for Visit Macon. He shared, “Having a diverse workplace is important because it increases productivity, innovation, creativity, problem-solving skills, engagement with the community, and most importantly, empathy. This is important to the visitor’s center because we are customer-service driven. Our goal is to help all customers in the same way. Diversity also increases the reputation of your business in the community when it is a true reflection of what the community represents.” At Travis Jean Emporium, I have made it a cornerstone of my values to hire people that are representative of not only the customers I currently serve but also, the customers I would like to serve. When customers see representation in a shop, restaurant, or business, it puts them at ease and instantly makes them feel welcome. Thanks to Nick-At-Nite and summers spent with my Grandmother, I sat around the glowing tv set fixated on I Dream Of Jeannie. I found myself wishing I could escape the whirlwind of elementary school by nodding my head and disappearing into my own bottle. Barbara Eden is an icon, and when I was given the chance to speak with her prior to her one-night appearance in Love Letters on Friday, September 13th at The Grand Opera House, I jumped at the opportunity. I was given ten minutes. TEN minutes that would pass by like TWO. I could spend ten minutes just thanking her for everything she has given to her fans‌ But in those ten minutes, I learned that Ms. Eden is still the utmost professional and just a dear human being!

AD- If NBC were to shoot the I Dream of Jeannie pilot all over again today in 2019, do you think that your character or even your portrayal of Jeannie would be different?
BE- Well, I'm sure there would be slight nuances that would be different... Actually, no. It's a classical scene. This theme has been around... Oh, a thousand years-- so you can't really mess with it a lot unless you're doing a comedy or something. (Laughs) It is timeless and you did such a wonderful job with her. She has come through my room so many nights with my Grandmother. It's just such treasured memories.
Thank you! Your career has been impressive and expansive over the years. TV appearances on The Johnny Carson Show, I Love Lucy, Gunsmoke, The Andy Griffith Show‌ Movies like A Privates Affair and the 1960 picture Flaming Star-- where you played Elvis Presley's leading lady. Other than I Dream of Jeannie, do you have a favorite episode or a movie that just really stands head and shoulders above the others?
I think as far as a feature film is concerned, I did two, actually, at MGM with George Powell. One was The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, which was shot in Germany, and the second was the 7 Faces of Doctor Lao which was a book that was required reading, I understand, at university levels. But it's a fabulous story, and I had a wonderful part in it. That, I truly enjoyed doing. And I enjoyed working with George Powell. If I would say a tv movie? Your Mother Wears Combat Boots. I loved doing that. And like Elvis, you also sing. What song has been your favorite to perform? And do you still get the chance to perform musically?
I do, but I don't really sing anymore. When I was studying at the [San Francisco Conservatory of Music], my teacher told me, "You're going into voice..." She was Italian, and she said, "This will be like living with a piano over your head for the rest of your life. You have to lift this piano and carry it everywhere." In other words, it's a great responsibility and physical. Physicality. And that's true, and I just don't feel like doing that anymore (laughs)! I don't mind doing it on a stage in a book show. But to sing as I used to, like in Las Vegas, and have a whole show? That's quite demanding and I don't think I want to do that anymore. Which of your songs is your favorite?
There so many! They're all so good. You know they really are. I think probably, and now don't laugh... I started singing in church. And I think the song that I treasure is "Ava Maria" because it was such an honor for me to have
the minister choose me to sing it at Christmas pageants-- near the baby Jesus. I must have been, oh gosh, 11-years-old? I love that song. I did not sing it the way I... As a child, you don't sing it as clearly as I hear it now when other people sing it. I love it! On September 13th you are going to be here in Macon, starring in Love Letters at The Grand Opera House. You will be performing beside an amazing actor, Barry Bostwick. Now, I know this isn't your first time appearing in this show. In 2006 you acted alongside your I Dream of Jeannie co-star Larry Hagman. What was that like for you-- being back together again?
Oh my goodness, it was wonderful. Anything I did with Larry, it was fabulous. He was an accomplished actor. Gosh, we even went to West Point on that tour. We were all over the East. And I have fond memories of it. I've always liked working with Larry, no matter what part we're playing. We've worked quite a bit together. He was wonderful and he is very much cherished. Now, your character in Love Letters, Melissa, she has been played by some incredible names over the years-- Stockard Channing, Linda Gray, Carol Burnette, Sissy Spacek, Sigourney Weaver, Bernadette Peters, Elizabeth Taylor, Mia Farrow, Candice Bergan and so many more. Ms. Eden how do you take this character and make her different?
I don't do her different. I do her exactly the way she is written and the way the author intended for her to be, I hope. This is a fabulous piece of work. It is the most wonderful thing for an actress to do because it is so well written. Most of the time the audience understands it. They understand the arc from childhood into the great beyond. Any actress who does it, I'm sure, loves playing this part. I certainly do. But you do it the way the man wrote it, you don't try to make it different. Is there anything that you are hoping to accomplish in the next few years to add to your list of accomplishments?
I just hope I can make people happy. Oh, you do such a wonderful job of that.
I think it's important. I think it's important that we enjoy our lives and respect them and understand and be grateful for what we have- and I love to do my job! If it can bring a little bit of happiness to someone or a twinkle to someone's eye... That's what I want to do.

It started off like almost every other hike or camping trip

On the way out of town, we stopped at a small grocery store for forgotten necessary essentials or any items which might provide entertainment around the campfire. I bought a copy of the National Inquirer, which promised an interesting feature: “MAN FINDS JESUS!” The story wasn’t about a man finding any spiritual enlightenment, but rather about Jesus supposedly working at a laundromat in Des Moines. We were barely a mile up the trail when the side of my left calf lit up like someone had skewered it with a red-hot poker. A lengthy and diverse trail of expletives poured from my adolescent mouth, and by the time I looked down to investigate what happened, my right hand was hit. As I noticed the stinger still lodged in my hand, I screamed bloody murder and took off running! I’m not allergic or anything, but my hand had swollen to the point that I could barely close it, and my leg wasn’t doing so hot either. It was also around this time I started to notice extensive blistering on both feet. A rule I never really
heeded was to break in new hiking boots before wearing them on an actual hike. I was not off to a great start. I made it to our campsite, but not without multiple stops to apply bandages and re-lace my boots. At the first opportunity, I abandoned what had become orthopedic torture devices and opted for my comfy flip-flops. In addition to the blister on my big toe, I had blisters on each heel and my pinky toes. My feet were pretty much shot, and I quickly became the butt of all jokes. “Hey, I sure hope a bear doesn’t come up on us! But if one does, all we have to worry about is outrunning you!” After dinner, just before reading the National Inquirer, we heard a large branch snap. Then another. The cracks and snaps got louder and closer. The bushes parted at the edge of our campsite and the bear appeared... It was massive! So we panicked. What were we to do? We weren’t more than fifteen feet away from the magnificent beast, and despite everyone having joked that they were planning on leaving me for bear food, no one moved. The
bear stood up on his hind legs as if he was preparing to roar or attack or make some violent movement. Barely even thinking about what I was doing, I threw the National Inquirer onto the campfire. Just as it left my painfully engorged digits, I glimpsed the article about Jesus being alive and living in America. As paper touched fire, I hollered out, “SWEET LORD JESUS, SAVE US FROM THIS BEAR!” The campfire flashed quickly, and the flames leaped-- and as fast as this horrific scenario had descended upon us, it resolved. With a burst of heat and bright light, the bear vanished. We could hear him, but eventually, the sounds trailed off and the bear was long gone. The whole car ride home, we laughed about the bizarre ordeal. I was a bit disappointed that I never got to read the article about the guy finding Jesus, but I guess in a way-- and if you’re into that kind of thing-- he found me.

House Talk
An Attractive Nuisance… Got kids? What is the deal with toddlers and small kids climbing on things? Perhaps it is just so that they are tall enough to look the grownups in the eye, but I suspect that it really is a primordial desire to scale the heights… Yes, primordial. In any event, the Marvelous Meggy and I have an incredibly active granddaughter aged two, so consider this a cautionary tale. Keeping her alive is quite a challenge considering all the wildly hazardous activities that she’s involved herself in-- such as climbing on the arm of the sofa like a gymnast with hands raised, shouting, “TADA!!!” We were having visions of her slipping off the couch and crashing to the floor. Also high speed running through the house where her head is at the same level as sharp corners of table tops… Whew! And then there are all of those electrical outlets and interesting lamp cords… How did I survive my childhood? One of the scariest things that we see that would (literally!) impact toddlers is lattice brick walls surrounding patios and gardens. These are great looking brick walls that are constructed to allow light and partial visibility between the gaps in the brick. The gaps in the brick are the problem since they are the perfect size for a small child to fit their shoes as they climb up the three or four-foot walls. They are almost irresistible. Unfortunately, as they age and settle these walls have a tendency to become unstable. In fact, whenever we find one on a home inspection we immediately grab the top and give them a gentle push. Most of the time we find that the entire three or four-foot high brick wall will move and begin to sway back and forth. Imagine an eight-foot-long section of brick wall falling over on top of the child as they try to climb! Disaster and tragedy! We normally recommend that they be removed. Insurance companies call such things an “attractive nuisance”. This simply means that the dangerous condition is also very attractive to children. Another example of an attractive nuisance is a swimming pool that does not have the proper fencing and safety gates. And don’t forget to consider things like decorative ponds or fountains that would attract small children that might fall in and drown.

We have all heard about the need to remove a refrigerator door when we are disposing of one since they are irresistible to kids who just have to get inside to make a fort. There have been many cases of kids suffocating in one of these. Take a look around your property from the standpoint of a toddler. Is there a pile of lumber or stones that a child might try to climb on? A firewood pile can be dangerous if it piled high enough. Sheesh!

It was June 10, 2016, and I'd spent all day outside playing basketball with friends and helping Dad with a few projects. Dinner time rolled around and as I always have, I returned home. Mom had a hot meal waiting on me-- chicken, rice, and broccoli. My favorite meal. I sat down, said grace, and ate. After dinner, I called Arturo, hoping he had a decent enough WiFi connection to talk on the phone. After a couple of rings, he picked up. We talked about the past few days. He told me that Roseangela, his daughter, was hoping to start college in August... But he didn't think it would happen. It's too expensive. He told me that she wanted to be a fashion designer. She had the same love for clothes that her mother, Anita, did. I asked Arturo about his job at the local greenhouse. He told me that the plants were looking great! He was excited to see how they turned out! As we talked, I caught myself thinking about my time in Ecuador. I thought about the incredible views and wonderful people. But I also thought about the poverty and poor conditions-- the young boys laboring out in the fields, the cups of water I was instructed to turn down because it would make me sick, the donkey who had multiple 100-pound sacks on its back and struggling to walk along the side of the mountain. I forced myself to think positively. Don't worry about what you can't control, Shane... Before hanging up the phone, I asked Arturo what he had for dinner‌ Toast.

Over the course of a year, Arturo and I became really good friends. He told me stories that I'll never forget-- some good, some bad-- but no matter the story, I found myself caring more and more about him and the people of Ecuador. Most surprisingly, I found myself longing for a return to simplistic ways, a return to the narrow streets of Zaruma. By June of 2017, Arturo had fully convinced me that the problems I kept telling myself that I couldn't control, I could actually control. He showed me that even the smallest of contributions would make a big difference. He assured me that it wouldn't be easy, but he believed in me. I never understood it. Why me? Why did Arturo have so much confidence in my abilities? I returned to Ecuador. This time, alone. My touristic mindset had just about left. I only had one
more hurdle to clear-- the bus. Before leaving for Ecuador, I was looking at the costs of transportation from Quito, the capital, to Zaruma. By plane, it would cost me nearly $100-- but by bus, it would cost me $15. It seemed obvious. Why would I pay $85 more? When I got to Quito, my friends who live in the city thought I was crazy. They told me the $85 was just peace of mind. It was safety. I refused to second guess my decision. While I originally made the choice based on reason, it became a rite of passage-- a hero's journey. Before I could begin to help the Ecuadorian people, I needed to understand their way of life. You can read all you want and watch all you want, but you'll never truly understand a people's culture until you immerse yourself in it. The bus trip was more than I could have imagined. I believe I had a taste of every aspect of Ecuadorian culture on the 12-hour ride. Initially, the A/C was broken but after it was fixed, it was extremely cold. There were folks that were well-off, dressed in suit and tie, and there were others who asked for spare change. People laughed at the comedy show playing on the small TV at the front of the bus and people sighed when the TV cut off after hitting a pothole in the road. There were times when the bus was traveling 70mph, and there were times when we were barely moving, struggling to navigate the broken roads. But through it all, one thing never changed-- the love the people had for one another, including an outsider... Someone who looked nothing like them, who had every opportunity in the world that they never had, someone who never had to worry about food being on the table the next day... Me. I stepped off the bus at 8am on July 10th, no longer a tourist. I was a cosmopolitan ready to make a difference. When I arrived at Arturo's house that morning, it all hit me at once. I realized why Arturo had so much confidence in me. He knew it from the times we started trekking up the mountains together during the summer of 2016, from the times I returned his phone call when I got back to The States, and from the times I asked him questions about his childhood. We'd both been waiting on the same tree to grow. We'd just been waiting from opposite ends of the forest.

JOHNSON of Gin Blossoms BY MEGAN ALLEN
It’s hard to talk ‘90s alt without bringing up the Gin Blossoms. Although 1992’s New Miserable Experience wasn’t the Arizona band's first album, it was the one that shot them to commercial success with hit singles like “Hey Jealousy” and “Found Out About You.” Their follow up album, 1996’s Congratulations…I’m Sorry, proved success was no fluke as the band continued to bring bright, guitar-driven, sunshiny melodies interlaced with melancholy that resonated with fans. Unfortunately, the band called it quits shortly thereafter and disappeared from the mainstream scene. The Blossoms reunited in the ‘00s, releasing three new studio albums and they continue to tour today. They’re currently on the road with Collective Soul-- but the Gin Blossoms are scheduled to drop into Perry on October 8 to play the 30th Annual Georgia National Fair! Guitarist Scotty Johnson and I discussed what was, what is, and what is coming up! MA: The Gin Blossoms have such a storied past. Let’s take a look back before we talk about the here and now. What sticks out as far as good decisions that the band made-- or the moments that defined the Gin Blossoms?
SJ: There were no good decisions (laughs)! I just remember, we spent so much time in the van. We had a van and it ended up… The original cover of New Miserable Experience was different. The first 50,000 units had this weird kind of cactus with blotchy color. And then the label decided to relaunch the record. I don't know if a lot of people realize this. So we did a different cover and we put our van on it because we had spent so much time in it. This was before the hits, you know? We toured for, gosh, a year and a half in that van before “Hey Jealousy” finally hit on the West Coast and then it kind of spread East. I remember we played at a place in Salt Lake City. I guess I'm thinking about that because we just played Salt Lake last night. We played at a club called Deviate and I remember going around the corner and there were all these people and somebody said, “What are all these people doing?” And the girl that was driving the van laughed and she said, “What are you serious? They're here to see you guys!” That moment, in my mind, was when everything changed. All of a sudden. We'd been playing clubs all over America-- and you get 20 or 30 people a night. Most of them were Arizona State people, students that had seen us when they were in Tempe. But yeah, that was the moment when I really got the sense like, “Oh wow, okay, everything's going
to change now.” How do you cope with that? I mean, how can you prepare for that at all? But it was different back then because this was before cell phones and stuff. I remember calling my buddies back home, and they were saying, “Oh my God, dude, you're on MTV!” And I'm like, “We are?” I didn't even know. The communication was so much slower back then, you know? So the first time you hear one of your songs on the radio, it's so exciting. It's like all the scenes in the movies with people that are running down the hallway screaming and so excited. It was like that. It's fun. I’m glad you mentioned communication and the way things have changed. As things have become more digital, everything has moved online. How has music changed for you? Not talking so much about the industry, but just personally for the Gin Blossoms, how has it changed?
It hasn't changed much for us, I don't think, because we're basically doing the same thing. But I can see it in other bands. I went to a concert the other day and there was no guitar player, and that to me is like, “Oh my gosh, how could that possibly... What?” (Laughs) Well, the Blossoms are driven by guitar. I don’t have to tell you.
Yeah. So I can see it in the new bands. I also see that a band nowadays is maybe two guys and then everybody else is hired guns. They won't have a drummer really-- they'll just use a drummer when they play live. I see that difference, where that idea of a group of continued on page 32

guys that played together forever seems to be changing. I get it. It's just a different world. Have you noticed changes in audiences and how they consume music? People used to buy an album and listen to it cover to cover then repeat, but now people may just download one or two songs.
Yeah, I think you're right. It's driven by singles. The days of sitting down and spending 45 minutes to listen to an album do definitely seem to be over. But as far as the audience, if you go into some deep track, obviously people aren't going to know it. I guess it's up to each artist to figure out. I don't want to bore the audience, but at the same time, if you’ve got a new song...You've got to balance it out. Talking about the past, let’s move it forward a little. You guys had your brief break-up, but you’ve been back at it 18 years now. Is that right? What led to doing the reunion show and why did you decide to stick it out for two more decades?
Jesse [Valenzuela], the other guitarist, we had a meeting and he was like, “You know, guys, this is kind of silly.”
We did a reunion tour, and then we realized that if there's a demand…It's our sound. It's our music. It's just kinda

Yeah. And we just filmed a show. DVDs don't really exist anymore, but I guess you try to get it on Netflix or something, right? That's the thing now. So that's coming up. I don't have any info on when. Oh yeah? Can you give us an idea of what it’s about or what it covers?
We had the 25th anniversary of the first record, so we wanted to capture that. We did the first record from front to back. We did it in Chicago at the House of Blues, which we love Chicago. And so it should be cool. I'm excited about it. Yeah, I've heard the mix already. We mixed it. So now they get to do coloring or something. Editing. But it’s looking like it may be on Netflix or a digital release. I can’t speak for Chicago but I know we’re looking forward to having you at the Georgia National Fair in October. We know you’ll probably work in the hits like “Hey Jealousy” and “Follow You Down” but can we expect to hear some newer material? Songs from [2018’s] Mixed Reality?
Yeah, we'll definitely throw in some new stuff. We try not to do too many of them because we don't want to bore people.

You guys worked with John Hampton for so many years, but for Mixed Reality, you teamed up with Don Dixon and Mitch Easter, who are probably most known for their work with REM. What did they add or bring for Gin Blossoms?
We worked a lot with John, and he’s passed away now. He was just so good. It was just amazing. He would always do what a lot of smart producers do. He could hear where we were trying to take it and would just kind of say, “Okay, we're going this way on the guitars.” And then he would add tiny little things like, “Oh, don't play that note, play that note.” Even when I hear it back on the stuff today, (John) was just such a great producer. I can't say enough about him and him putting his thumbprint on our music. It was such an amazing experience at Ardent with John. We’ve only made one record with Don, so that's still kind of new and fresh. If you Wikipedia those guys, they’re called the inventors of jangle pop. They all love it. It’s Mitch. So we thought, “Well, that’s perfect for us!” So that was fun. I do have to admit, I was channeling Peter Buck from REM. It was fun working with those guys and jangling it up. So many of the band members contribute to writing those songs. Do you each write separately and bring it back together, or do you collaborate from start to finish? What’s the work process?
It's all over the map. A lot of times, Jesse or Robin [Wilson] will come in with a finished song. But on the last record, Bill [Leen] and
I wrote two songs together and Robin and I… I think wrote two. For the last record, Bill used to come over to my house every Wednesday afternoon and we'd drink coffee and try to write songs. We ended up writing maybe four or five. And then I had some stuff that wasn't quite finished and Robin jumped in with some lyrics. So yeah, it's all over the place and I kinda like that. It's not one thing over and over. It's definitely random. For you, specifically, you’re a guitar player in a guitar-driven rock band, but your background is in jazz-- and you dabble in country. Who influences you, and when you’re writing, how do you determine when a song is more appropriate for one genre or another?
When I was a kid, it was all about Jimmy Page. Led Zeppelin was the thing. And then I studied jazz in high school and in college, but a jazz buddy of mine said, “Dude, what are you doing? You need to be in a rock band!” And I really love country, and I like reggae. Some artists and some songwriters, it just speaks to me and it doesn't really matter the style. It's all about the songs for me. I love Peter Tosh’s playing. He was an amazing guitarist, so cool and laid back. I love that stuff. I love Joe Pass, the jazz guitar player. I'm all over the map. I can't help it. You can basically point [to a song]. This is going to be a rock song, or this one, I'm going to write a country song this way. To me, the song is first and then the production’s later. We can go take that song this way or that way. You can hang up a country song and put all the fancy guitar parts on it. And then on a rock song.
Gin Blossoms’ music reminds me of driving in the sunshine with the windows down, but when you dig into the lyrics, it's really melancholy. How do you marry the laid back, chill sound with the deeper angst?
Yeah, we were described that way. Bittersweet. It sounds really poppy maybe, but when you think about the lyrics it gets a little dark. But you know, I'm not a big lyricist person. I'm mainly like the chord and riff guy contributor to the music. But yeah, I wonder if it's kind of a ‘90s thing-- you know what I mean? I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any happy song in any ‘90s. It was kind of part of the era. It still seems to resonate. Even if you're not somebody who grew up in the ‘90s, it still touches people. What do you think has kept you guys relevant with fans for so many years?
I think we all appreciate what happened and just having a day gig. To be completely honest, we're all amazed that we're still going! And I think we're really lucky that it's been the four of us since I was the last one to join in ’92. A lot of bands are getting down to one, two guys. I think maybe somehow what has kept us going all these years is that it's been the four of us and we've been partners a long time. All right, let's have a little bit of fun. You guys are out right now with Collective Soul. You've done several tours over the last few years with Tonic and with Vertical Horizon. Looking back over the years, going back as far as you want, who's been your favorite?

The group you just enjoy going out on the road with?
I have to give kudos to the Collective Soul guys. They are really great dudes. A lot of people don't know this, but they’re a brother band, Ed and Dean Roland, and they're just so cool and there's never any problems. Their crew is so helpful. Some of the more interesting ones, we went with Del Amitri for a while, right when they had that big hit “Roll with Me”. That was interesting. I'd never hung out with anybody from Scotland before and they have really thick accents. It was hard to understand what they were saying, but that was really an interesting thing. We did UB40 [tour]. Yeah, that was fun. I really liked their music. They weren’t the super nicest guys, (laughs). We were punk kids, you know, and they had a number one when we were out with them. They had that Elvis song, “Wise men say only fools…” So it was funny because we saw them in the elevator at the hotel and somebody said, “So how's it going with your record?” And we're like, “Oh my gosh, we just hit the top 100!” We were like 92 and the (UB40) singer looked over and he goes, “We're number one.” Oh Wow. Yeah. Good for you, buddy. Right. But that was fun because I always love that song “Rats in the Kitchen”. That big tall guy sang that. The singer didn't sing that one. It was the other dude. They only played it live once. I remember I heard him do it in soundcheck and then they only played it that one time. So that was cool. Yeah. Those are some fun memories. If you could go out on tour with anyone – bands of the past or present, people who are living or no longer with us – who would it be?
I’m a huge John Lennon fan. Tragic story there, but man, to play with John? Incredible. Then I always really loved Ella Fitzgerald. I could just imagine being in her band,
playing with her in the ‘50s. That would've been so cool. And Bob Marley, that would have been fun. Open up for Bob… I call him Bobby. We’re on a personal basis. (Laughs) Similar question to go with that and it may be the same answer, but if you could do a whole festival lineup, who’s on the stage with you?
Oh my gosh. Besides who I already mentioned? Let's see. You know what, I do have a guilty pleasure. I love the [Red Hot] Chili Peppers! Ever since I was a kid, they used to play Phoenix all the time because they were from Hollywood. So they'd come over and do a Friday night and they were in the van. And so now that they're, like, the hugest band in the world, it's just amazing. They're great. I would love to do something with that. And then we always wanted to play with Tom Petty, but you know, that never happened. A bunch of our friends did, and we kept thinking, “Tom's going to ask us to go out on tour with him.” We used to beg, “Please, Tom!” We’d do interviews and say, “Please tell Tom Petty to take us on tour!” Because he took out Soul Asylum and The Replacements. And we're like, “Why can't we get out there with Tom?” That would've been cool.
Oh yeah, Honey Girl. We got a bunch of gigs coming up back home, so I'm excited. It's fun to get back home and then have a band that I can play with. We write songs and we’re working on some new material and it's going good. Is there anything you'd want to add? Anything you want to tell Central Georgia before you guys get here in October?
We had a sound man... I'm pretty sure he lives in Macon. Monty. Shout out to Monty! He'll love that if he [reads] this. He worked at this back in the ‘90s and he's still doing sound. I'm pretty sure he lives there.
You spoke about the live show that you filmed. Any other future projects? What else are you guys working on?
That's about it for right now. We've been out all summer. It's been busy.
