The Legendary Red Dog

t’s hard to think about the moment when you are going to die. It might be unexpected. A moment you are here and then you are gone. You might be lucky enough to gather everyone around you and say goodbye, or you might suck more wind for longer than you would have liked while everyone watches you wither away and go. I’ve never been a big believer that it matters much how you go. How you live, I think, matters much more, and I doubt there is anyone that would dispute that Joseph “Red Dog” Campbell gave it his all when it came to living. For those of you parking under Idle Hour for the last few decades, Red Dog was one of the original Allman Brothers Band roadies and worked with the band for over thirty years. The guy you don’t know on the back of the Fillmore East Album, that’s Red Dog. He was perhaps the most famous roadie in all of music. Famous enough for Cameron Crowe to write him into his film Almost Famous. His adventurues were also covered in great detail in his 2001 book, The Legendary Red Dog: A Book of Tails. The book didn’t hold back, talking freely about the sex, the drugs and the rock and

roll that ruled much of his life. He liked women, smack and good music. And he was such a likeable person and affable storyteller that it was hard to blame him for any of that. To watch Mama Louise’s heart melt when he’d walk into H&H said it all. She worried about him, sure, but he was still the apple of her eye. It was his attitude and hard work that helped make Macon famous, and it is his legend and his memory that will keep it that way. Keep hollering buddy, we’ll always be listening.

Celebrate Grant’s Lounge 40th Anniversary with Wet Willie and The Lee Boys s the late owner Edward Grant Sr. said, “Over one million people have come through these doors, and I thank you all for the wonderful memories.” With that in mind, The Original Home of Southern Rock, Grant’s Lounge celebrates its 40th anniversary with four days of music, old friends and lots of memories from March 2-5. Between 1971 and 1976, guests at Grant’s would be exposed to over 100 rock and jazz bands. Most of these bands were looking for that “lucky break.” Grant’s performaers like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wet Willie and Charlie Daniels were among the lucky ones and are honored on Grant’s legendary Wall of Fame inside the historic music venue. The events kick off Wednesday, March 2 at 6p.m. with opening act Davin McCoy followed by the Lee Boys, one of America's finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. Tickets are $12.50 in advance and $15 at the door. This night will be a celebration of Grant’s rich musical history in Macon, with a reception honoring the people and characters who span the decades, from blues and southern rock pioneers of the sixties to dancing disco queens of the 20th century. Grant’s Lounge is located at 576 Poplar Street in downtown Macon.

Friday, February 25 An Evening with Travis Tritt at Capitol Theatre

oin the Cox Capitol Theatre and Travis Tritt for a rare solo acoustic performance on Friday, February 25. Tritt is an American country music singer from Marietta, Georgia. Tritt signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1989, releasing seven studio albums and a greatest hits package for the label between then and 1999. In the 2000s, he released two albums on Columbia Records and one for the defunct Category 5 Records. Seven of his albums (counting the Greatest Hits) are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); the highest-certified is 1991's It's All About to Change, which is certified triple-platinum. Tritt has also charted more than forty times on the Hot Country Songs charts, including five number ones -- "Help Me Hold On," "Anymore," "Can I Trust You with My Heart," "Foolish Pride" and "Best of Intentions" -- and fifteen additional top

ten singles. Tritt's musical style is defined by mainstream country and Southern rock influences. He has received two Grammy Awards, both for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals: in 1992 for "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," a duet with Marty Stuart, and again in 1998 for "Same Old Train", a collaboration with Stuart and nine other artists. For the record I’m a firm believer that Baby Showers are for girls. That said, an old friend had one for “couples” so I went, begrudgingly. I just wanted that on record. In going, I missed the Cox Capitol Theatre showing of Lemmy, which I had great anxiety about, since I have long believed Lemmy to be the only true rock and roller ever and this documentary about him was something I’d really been wanting to see. Fuck Keith Richards. Yeah I said it, and he couldn’t do shit about it, but Lemmy probably could. Something else I have anxiety about is sleeping, though I don’t’ whine about it. This past week, I just got up at four and was lucky enough to catch this documentary on Paladium (another thing I LOVE). It was everything I hoped it would be. It caught the Motorhead front man being true human

being, just doing what he was born to do, and never, ever changing. Rock on fucker! How do you make a dead baby float? Two scoops of ice cream, two scoops dead baby. That’s Lemmy’s joke, not mine. I’ve been listening to the Nirvana Unplugged Album this week, something I usually reserve for depression, which I was on the edge of until the sun came out. I’ve also been listening to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Welcome to Woody Creek and Alejeandro Escovedo’s Street Songs of Love. All of them old, but worthy of your collection. And who isn’t happy that The Cherry Blossom Festival stepped up their game and got Big Boi and Jamey Johnson this year for the Street Party. Congrats to Karen Lambert and crew for making this festival the best I can remember since I was a kid. It is events like this, that bring more than the

normal thousand folks that do everything in Macon to town, that are the ones that matter, in making this a better place to be. I’ve long been a fan of the movie The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Though it got pretty roughed up in the reviews, I think his legend is an important one and thought this movie was a very real potrayal of how it must have been. There is nothing quite as interesting as a superstitious man. I’m reading the book now, which is even better. And it’s one of the few I’ve actually gone to a bookstore to buy this year. And while we’re talking Westerns, if you haven’t seen the HBO series Deadwood (2004-2006), go out right now, and get it. It beats the pants off any cable series I’ve ever watched.

A string trio featuring concertmaster Jason Economides presents an engaging and entertaining look at how string instruments function in classical and folk music. Children are encouraged to be inquisitive and learn about symphonic music. The programs begin each First Saturday at noon; admission is $3.50 for kids ages 417 and children under 4 are free.

Amy became the Director of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, Steve is a two-time Grammy nominated percussionist that is currently producing inventive symphonic pops programs for symphonies across the country. Macon is fortunate to have them, and The 11th Hour is overjoyed they will be performing at this years “Reader’s Choice Awards” February 24th. iolinist Amy Schwartz Moretti is recognized for her musical elegance and grace. Her playing has been described as “breathtakingly rich in tone and color” (St. Petersburg Times). Her extensive solo and chamber music appearances include performances in New York’s Weill Recital Hall, Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, Cleveland’s Severance Hall, Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., Atlanta’s Spivey Hall, Italy’s Gonfalone Oratory, and Edinburgh Castle. She was invited to Carnegie Hall for her solo concerto debut. She is former Concertmaster of the Oregon Symphony and The Florida Orchestra and now is Director of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University. Born in Wisconsin, Ms Moretti spent her childhood in North Carolina and California. She now lives with her husband and two young sons in Macon, Georgia. Her new solo CD is Kaleidoscope.

Their music had been featured on The Super Bowl, and can be heard at the Georgia Dome during the Atlanta Falcons’ games. Steve is also co-founder of SymPop Productions™, a new company that produces inventive symphonic pops programs for orchestras around the country. Now that you know what this dynamic duo has been doing, take a look at what Steve is also listening to.

When you started playing music, what pulled you toward the classics? I started when I was 4 and became serious about it in my early teens. There wasn't any other type of music on my radar. I always loved playing the violin, and studying classical music became my passion. Even though I perform classical music, I listen and enjoy all types of music.

Wet Willie were, after the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the hardestrocking of the Southern bands to come to national attention in the early '70s. For seven years, from 1971 until 1978, they produced an enviable array of albums awash in good-time music, rollicking high-energy bluesrock, and white Southern soul, and for their trouble they racked up just one Top Ten hit ("Keep On Smilin'") and a lot of admirers. In contrast to the Allman Brothers Band, whose jumping-off point was really Cream and who based their music on long jams, Wet Willie were closer in spirit to Booker T. & the MG's and perhaps the Mar-Keys, of Stax/Volt fame, much more steeped in sweaty, good-time R&B than the blues-rock of the Allmans or the country-rock of the Marshall Tucker Band. Think of what Lynyrd Skynyrd might have sounded like with but one lead guitar on a white chitlin circuit, if such a thing had existed.

Husky-voiced American Idol singing sensation Harold "Bo" Bice hailed from Helena, AL, and brought his Southern sensibility with him to the fourth season of Fox's long-running talent contest. Bice competed weekly against fellow rocker Constantine Maroulis, his long hair, bell bottoms, and drug rug tunics against Maroulis' biker jacket and stockpile of New York City swagger. Eventually Bice won out (to the shock of some Idol fans), and went all the way to the winner's circle where he was the runner-up to corn silk Oklahoman Carrie Underwood.

Travis Tritt was one of the leading new country singers of the early '90s, holding his own against Garth Brooks, Clint Black, and Alan Jackson. He was the only one not to wear a hat and the only one to dip into bluesy Southern rock. Consequently, he developed a gutsy, outlaw image that distinguished him from the pack.

The music played during the wedding ceremony will define the atmosphere and will be a chance for you to make the wedding truly your own. The first thing you must decide on is what style of music you would like. In order to determine the style of music, base the decision on you wedding theme, wedding venue and your musical taste. If you are holding a Caribbean beach front wedding, then you may choose island style music if that also coincides with your taste. If your wedding will have a romantic theme and be held at a church, then classical wedding music may be a perfect compliment. Once you have determined the style of music that you like for your wedding. It will be important to attain the musicians that can deliver that style of music with the feel that you are looking for based on your musical taste and wedding theme. Remember to be cre-

Finally, you must determine the songs that will be performed during your ceremony. Most ceremonies have four distinct pieces that are performed. These include: Prelude: Typically the prelude is a medley of songs that are in your specific music style, which are played for the guest as they arrive and are seated for the wedding. Most

preludes take place 15 to 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. Procession: The processional music is played while the wedding attendants walk down the aisle. The processional music often includes a different selection for the seating of the parents, the wedding party, and finally the bride. Ceremony: Couples often decide to have a special piece performed during the ceremony by a choir or a soloist. These take place during periods such as before a reading, during the signing of the marriage license, or a during the lighting of a unity candle. Recession: This is the music played at the conclusion of the wedding. It tends to be a more upbeat joyous piece that will usher the bride, groom, attendants and guest from the ceremony location. One tip is to solicit help from the musician that you have hired to perform during your wedding when deciding on the various pieces. Don’t take them for granted because they can be a valuable resource by helping to make this overwhelming process much easier for you. hen the City of Macon received our official audit last year, I wrote an article here in the 11th Hour pointing out the serious deficiencies it contained. There were no fewer than 30 “material weaknesses” – double the number of former Mayor Ellis’s worst year, and several were repeat offenses from the year before that had not been addressed. Interestingly enough, many of the same people who applauded me for asking tough fiscal questions of the former mayor were appalled when I asked the same questions last year of the current mayor. Although most of the direct quotes I used in the article were taken from the audit and were not my own opinion, the current Mayor chose to attack me in our daily newspaper, saying he was offended. As to my motivations, he was quoted as saying, “I think he’s seeking some sort of public recognition through this.” We recently lost our excellent Finance Director, Tom Barber, who is a CPA (unlike the newly-posted requirement for his replacement). At his last budget briefing in December before the Appropriations Committee, I asked him (and these meetings are all recorded on audio tape) a question

I have been pressing for two years. He has supported the administration’s assertion that the City has $6 million in reserves. When I asked him, however, how much of that is unspent and uncommitted, he answered truthfully, “$600,000.” That, of course, is the same figure past auditors and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at UGA agree is in our “real” reserve. Just two weeks ago, our new acting Director of Finance (who holds the City’s only other CPA on staff) briefed us in our mid-year budget review. In writing, he told us that our current unallocated reserve (unspent money) is actually $100,014. Unfortunately, it is even worse than that figure. The City owes our pension funds $6 million and, in December, we instructed the administration to make a payment of $1.2 million toward that debt. When I asked the acting finance director in the recent meeting whether the payment has been made, he answered “No.” I then asked, rather incredulously, “Doesn’t that mean we are $1.1 million dollar in the red?” and he agreed. It is rather difficult to maintain that we have a $6 million reserve when even our acting finance director agrees we have more debts than we have cash. You can imagine, then, why Council was unimpressed when the new audit was presented to

@ us this month with such a rosy spin that you would have thought we were all supposed to hold hands. As the Telegraph reporter wrote, the auditor “sought to put a positive spin Tuesday on an audit report recently delivered to Macon City Council, but council members were having none of it.” The term “clean audit” was constantly offered as proof of our financial soundness, but, of 29 significant findings in the audit, 17 concerned spending in our federal programs and the auditor was unable to provide an opinion concerning those accounts. That money that was mis-spent last year on routine maintenance of empty new houses built by the City? Supposedly we still don’t have any answer from HUD whether it will need to be repaid, but no provisions have been made in case we need to do so. Even worse, when our federal lobbyists came before us to tell why they are worth the $10,000 per month (plus expenses) we pay them, I asked them how soon they thought they might be able to get an answer for us from HUD on that question. They looked like deer caught in the headlights – they were unaware of the issue and had not been asked to help by the administration that is paying them. In case you think things are much better financially than they used to be and that the administration has been able to get its hands around the problems, I offer only two points: • On February 10th the City paid the law firm of Seyfarth Shaw the amount of $30,102.20 for legal work on TADs and redevelopment plans. has Council not approved that payment, but the ordinance requesting $35,000 for it was tabled so there is no possibility of “mis-interpreting” that it was approved; • The Mayor’s political aide ran state-wide last year for public office both in the Democratic primary and in the general election. When the Mayor told us that this campaign would be taking place, he assured us that the employee would be taking “an unpaid leave” in order to run. Just two weeks ago we were given the financial “sweeps” that show how much money we have saved in various departments due to vacancies, retirements, etc. I asked the human resources director (again in an audiotaped meeting) whether salary savings for someone who took an unpaid leave would be reflected in the written report. He answered affirmatively. The amount officially listed for the last six months of 2010 for savings in the Mayor’s office, where the employee works, is 0. Occasionally when I have conversations about City finances, I am told that Council should not have control of the City’s finances, and that the Mayor should be able to spend amounts unfettered or unquestioned. My answer is always that I’m not arguing about what SHOULD be the case, but about what is the current law. The next time I’m stopped for speeding at 85 on the expressway, do you think it will matter if I tell the state trooper than I shouldn’t have to obey that speed limit because I don’t agree with it? I hardly think he will be impressed.

Lurking In The Shadows of Revolution BY BILL KNOWLES

s Americans and the world were glued to their television screens watching the events unfold in Cairo during the latter part of January, we all could not help but feel inspiration as the youth of Egypt stood up in Tahrir Square and toppled the regime of Hosni Mubarak, who had been in power for almost thirty years. What people do not realize is the enormous amount of help given to the young revolutionaries by a group of Islamic fundamentalists called the Muslim Brotherhood, who worked behind the scenes of the Revolution and have been waiting for this opportunity to seize power in Egypt since the creation of the group in 1928. The hand of the Brotherhood can be found throughout Egypt as it runs various daycare centers, hospitals, banks and community centers. Sounds like a great organization, doesn’t it? It almost sounds like an Islamic Salvation Army. But let’s take a closer look. The Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 by an Islamic school teacher named Hassan al-Banna and has grown into the world’s largest Islamic movement. The Brotherhood started off peaceful enough and did not become violent until sometime in the mid 1930’s as its leaders opposed British rule in Egypt and carried out various bombings against the British military. Further, during World War II, the Brotherhood distributed copies of Hitler’s Mein Kampf throughout the Islamic world, even translating it into Arabic to spread anti-Semitism. In 1948, the

Egyptian government disbanded the Muslim Brotherhood and outlawed them as a political party, although they have continued on working underground. In 1954 a member of the Brotherhood, Mohammed Abdel Latif, made an unsuccessful attempt at assassination of Gamal Abdel Nasser Egypt’s Prime Minister at the time. Nasser, who earlier in 1948 tried to form a détente with the Brotherhood but quickly decided that they were unreasonable and too radical a faction to deal with, cracked down on them and arrested over 20,000 of the Brotherhood’s members. In 1964, Nasser legalized the Brotherhood and released all of its members from prison. He would then go on to outlaw it again two years later. Nasser’s successor, Anwar Sadat, was more tolerant of the Brotherhood as he began releasing some of its members from jail. Sadat never legalized the Brotherhood, but did use them to help stabilize his government against left wing factions. He also would become their enemy when he signed the Camp David Accords with Israel in 1979. The Muslim Brotherhood was virtually split after the peace agreement with some of the members forming the Tanzim al-Jihad or more commonly known as the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. A fatwa, or edict, was issued by one the members of this group Omar AbdelRaham to kill Sadat and was carried out by several members of the Jihad. Oh, did I mention that Abdel-Raham is currently in jail in North Carolina for his part in the 1993 World

Trade Center bombing? Further, other members of the EIJ have close links to another group you might remember called AlQueda. The 9/11 Commission report reads that not only Abdel-Raham, known as “The Blind Sheikh”, was influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood and the writings of one its’ early theologians Sayyid Qutb, but so was our good friend Osama Bin-Laden, stating that “BinLaden relies heavily” on Qutb and AbdelRaham “preached the message of Sayyid Qutb’s Milestones, characterizing the United States as the oppressor of Muslims worldwide and asserting that it was their religious duty to fight against God’s enemies.” This coming from a group whose mantras are “Islam is the solution” and “jihad is our way”. Gives you a nice warm fuzzy feeling, doesn’t it? Now, getting back to the Revolution in Tahir Square, we were all shocked when the crowd turned on CNN’s Anderson Cooper as he and his camera crew was attacked. Cooper’s video went viral and was on every television in the world. What wasn’t reported until a week later was the brutal beating and rape of CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan, who was assaulted the same day as Cooper. A group of 200 “peaceful” protestors were whipped into a frenzied state and attacked Ms. Logan in an unspeakable manner. Unspeakable, unless you are in a culture who shows absolutely no respect for women; then this becomes the norm. How many of the attackers were members of the Muslim Brotherhood, I cannot tell

you, but I know that they were there. No one actually knows what the Muslim Brotherhood’s role will be in the new Egyptian government, but one thing is certain: They will be a major part of it. One of the more moderate leaders in the National Democratic Party of Egypt, Mohammed Kamal stated on the PBS program “Frontline” that, the Muslim Brotherhood will “try to use the democratic mechanisms to come to power and once in power they will restructure the whole state to fit their ideology…and Egypt might become a second Iran.” That’s just what we need, isn’t it? It hasn’t taken long for the new Egypt to show that there is good reason for the Western world to have reason to worry, especially for our ally Israel. This week, Egypt allowed Iranian warships to cross through the Suez Canal for the first time in decades, as they headed to Syria for a series of war games. Further, it is more disturbing that no one can categorically confirm that Egypt will in fact abide by the Camp David Accords and maintain a peace with Israel. As a people, we should not turn a blind eye on the situation in Egypt and hope for the best. We sincerely need to be wary of any change in Egypt and defend and help our friends and allies in Israel. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration has done absolutely nothing to show Israel and her Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu anything even resembling support. 11thHourOnline.com

BETTER EDUCATION = BETTER TEACHERS ONLY 5 STATES DO NOT HAVE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING FOR EDUCATORS...

...AND THOSE STATES SAT/ACT SCORES RANK: #50: SOUTH CAROLINA, #49: NORTH CAROLINA #48: GEORGIA, #47: TEXAS AND #44: VIRGINIA They burn out. They sacrifice their economic well-being and their mental health for the love of their students, for the love of learning and teaching. And it is love, yes. But the machine eventually takes its toll. This I know. I watched it happen. I taught in public education for fifteen years. My child is in public education. And I know that teachers are the foundation of civilization, since every other profession — doctoring, lawyering, engineering — would be impossible without them. If we want smart citizens, we need great teachers. And here’s what it takes to make that happen. Studies of the highest achieving countries in the world — and news flash, the U.S. ain’t one of them — show that these countries treat teachers very well. They recruit competitively. They give teachers (and students) the tools they need to do the job, and keep classrooms to a manageable size. And here in the US, the states that do this best have collective bargaining. Here’s a statistic for you: Only 5 states

do not have collective bargaining for educators and have deemed it illegal. Those states and their ranking on ACT/SAT scores are: South Carolina (50th), North Carolina (49th), Georgia (48th), Texas (47th), and Virginia (44th). Governor Walker is using a very real budget crisis as a sledgehammer against collective bargaining. He’s been gunning for it for a while, and now he has an opportunity, supported by some very Big Money interests. It’s a nasty political circus, but at its center, it’s the same old story — those in power want more power. It’s not about money — the unions offered good faith alternatives. But Walker is not backing down. We’re still in an economic mud pit, still sliding deeper in many ways. But the way out is not on the backs of our children. The future is not an exploitable resource. Our teachers are not an expendable line item. We can stick our fingers in our ears if we want to, but that whoosing sound, the sound of the rest of the world leaving us in the dust, will not go away, no matter how much we play ostrich.

t’s been a common sight in the news recently — crowds of people, brandishing placards, angry people, disenfranchised people, people who have had enough. In Egypt, they have managed to move Hosni Mubarak on down the road. In other places, dictators and despots and fear mongers are starting to crack down, realizing the power inherent in people who have had enough and who refuse to be quiet about it any longer. Egypt. Libya. Zimbabwe. And Wisconsin. In the capital city of Madison, 12,000 Americans took to the streets to protest the proposed elimination of their collective bargaining rights. Now, I don’t know a lot about the value of collective bargaining in the educational workplace because I’ve never benefited from it. Georgia is a “right to work” state, which sounds really cool, but which actually creates a chilling atmosphere on workers’ rights, especially in a corporate environment. And don’t for one second kid yourself that our contemporary educational system isn’t a corporation, red in tooth and claw. It is, and it’s a mighty one, the proverbial cash cow and golden egg-laying goose all in one politically engineered mutant beast. Who sees all this money? Not students, and not most teachers. Hardly anybody at the

school-itself level. But get out your calculator, and start adding up the salaries of the administrators, especially those up there in the Board of Regents, and you’ll see where a HUGE chunk of your change is going. Ditto all the “special interest” consultants and the monolithic textbook industry – all are slurping at the waterhole. And it’s in the best interests of the People In Charge to keep the cash flowing upward. They know this. They are not big dummies up there. So they make laws that keep it that way, setting up a closed circle that one tiny individual person can‘t possibly access. It‘s a machine, a steam roller with the mind of a robber baron, and one person thrown into its gears will be ground to hamburger. One person doesn’t stand a chance. Only the collective has any power. One person, arm in arm with another, each person’s individual self interest laid down and a larger purpose taken up. Because here’s the bottom line, and study after study demonstrates the truth of it — to get quality education, you MUST attract and retain quality teachers. And the only way to do that is to make teaching a profession that our best and brightest get rewarded for choosing. Not that our best and brightest don’t already end up as teachers — I’m convinced that they do. But they don’t stay.

ll over Macon, in the back of clubs, at house parties, concert venues and the alleyway behind the Rookery, boys and girls are getting down. Getting down is an integral part of the human experience, but sometimes choices and decisions regarding where and how to get down can be troublesome. This column will act as a field guide to getting down in Macon’s divinely complex scene, highlighting various key aspects within. Through examples, definitions of terms and memoirs this guide will become a valuable resource to turn to in the event that you, the reader, decide that getting down is a lifestyle you’d like to pursue. In this issue we will explore and explain the curiously new electronic music genre Dubstep. Dubstep is a form of music that is native to southern England; it is an offshoot of Drum N’ Bass that has taken Downtown Macon by storm. Like a fitted cap clad Prometheus bringing down the fires of Dub to the masses of Macon, DSEL (pronounced “diesel”) Promotions have been the main proponents of this genre. With their monthly party BASSFACE and their weekly residency at Asylum, DSEL Thursdays, the guys at DSEL are ensuring Dubstep’s stay in Macon. With basslines that could crumble the walls of Jericho, this particular music is a great choice for boys and girls that want to get down. For a good example of Dubstep, listen to the song “This Way” by UK duo Nero. Keep in mind that the bulk of Dubstep’s beautiful griminess lies in its low frequency basslines, so be sure

to use high end headphones or speakers. If at work, school or church, resist the urge to bounce up and down. Where to get down to Dubstep: The largest Dubstep party in Macon hands down is BASSFACE, where DSEL brings apostles of low end megahertz like DJ Gimpmode and MC Armanni Reign to the Asylum stage once a month. However, other parties are beginning to pop up around town. The Electric Social, now held at Caulfield’s Vintage, will showcase local DJs exhibiting their skills. The headliner for the night (Feb 25th) is legendary local DJ Old Flame spinning the best in Dubstep rhythms. For those who are interested in getting down but not sure how to go about it, the Electric Social is a great opportunity to sample various forms of electronic music. Dancing to electronic music is, for many, a key element to getting down. How to get down to Dubstep: This music is best enjoyed in the company of friends; a large group or even just a few of your “homeboys kickin’ it” will suffice. While mainstream dance music requires simulated copulation with a member of the opposite sex, getting down to Dubstep does not. This may seem strange at first, simply give into the rhythm and this strangeness will soon subside. When dancing to Dubstep be sure to have at least a one foot radius between you and others as bouncing up and down and flailing of one’s hands is a standard side effect of Dubstep. Who’s getting down to Dubstep: Be cautious when considering Dubstep as an

option to aid you in getting down; the heart murmur-inducing basslines of Dubstep make it a non-option for the elderly. For those with no preexisting heart conditions Dubstep is a viable option for those who want to get down and do not want to hear the song “No Hands” twice in one DJ set. Men, women, children, boys and girls, Lutheran ministers; everyone willing and able can get down to Dubstep. Dubstep is only one facet of getting down; in the weeks and months to come we will explore many more. There are many topics to cover and many aspects of nightlife that can make or break your entire experience. To the novice partier this can seem a bit unnerving and a little scary. Fret not; with the help of this guide you, the reader, will be getting down with the best

shots fired a few blocks over. Deputies made contact with the suspicious person, 41 year old Michael Deon Howard from Macon. Deputies ran Howardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s information and found that he did not have any warrants. One of the deputies offered to give Howard a ride back to his residence. As deputies were leaving the Garnett Drive South residence with Howard, they turned onto Yellowstone Way and noticed that a white Dodge Caravan had run across a yard and hit a parked vehicle. The van was still running as deputies approached the wreck. Deputies found a female lying on the ground, next to the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side door, bleeding from the head. It was found that the female was suffering from a gun shot wound to the head. Paramedics were immediately dispatched to the scene. The female is identified as being 34 year old Keevie Varnado, of 720 Sandusky Drive. She was transported to the hospital and listed in critical condition. Additional deputies and investigators

arrived on scene and found that Keevie lived with her brother Kareem Varnado, at the Sandusky Drive residence. Upon further investigation it was reported that the Varnados had a party at their residence earlier that evening. The suspicious person, Michael Deon Howard was at that party, arguing with Keevie throughout the day and night. Around 3:30a.m. in the morning, Keevie was going to give Howard a ride back to his residence on Hillcrest Avenue. Howard is believed to have shot Keevie in the head while having an argument in the van at 7020 Sandusky Drive. Investigators continue to search for the handgun which was involved in the shooting. Howard was taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Complex where he is being charged for Aggravated Assault and Parole Violation. This incident is under investigation. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office at 478-746-9441.
