The story is just getting started.

A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. The money will help The 11th Hour continue to offer great content, and calendars and reviews to our readers for years to come. So purchase your membership today and continue to read Teddy Bear. S M O K E O N T H E WAT E R M U S I C & B B Q F E S T April 1-2- The Kentucky Headhunters, The Lacs & Sammy Kershaw Headline Music Lineup

Smoke on the Water is set to return to Bickley’s Lake in Thomaston, Ga. April 1-2. BBQ enthusiasts and music lovers are guaranteed to leave with a smile as this year is lining up to be the biggest and best to date. This year marks the ninth annual event. Started by a group of friends as a way to give back to their community, the cook-off and musical festival has become a mainstream event for their hometown. Over 60 cooking teams participated in the 2015 cooking competition and more than 4,000 people attended the weekend event. Since its inception in 2007 SOTW has given back over $120,000 to the Upson County Volunteer Fire Departments as part of a ‘thank you’ to the community. “This is contributed to the great community of Upson County,” said SOTW Co-Founder Bobby Bickley. “Without the support that we have had from the business owners, individuals, and volunteers in our community, this would not be possible. The VFD’s are a deserving choice as they risk their lives day in and day out for the citizens of our community.” The two day event will feature some of the best BBQ in the Southeast. As in the year’s past, SOTW is a Florida Barbecue Association (FBA) sanctioned event. This year it is also a qualifier for the Jack Daniels American Royal Invitational. Over $13,000 in prizes are up for grabs in this year’s BBQ competition. SOTW has been named one of the top 10 best BBQ festivals in the state of Georgia, and leading up to the event, it will be featured on a national syndicated radio show, “The Big Show” with John Boy and Billy. “It’s a good feeling knowing that all of our hard work that we have put into our festival is being recognized as one of the best in the state,” said Bickley.

Cooking team applications are available online at www.sotwfestival. com. Cooking teams will be selling their product along with a multitude of other unique arts and crafts vendors. Each year the music at SOTW gets better and better, and this year features a great line up and headliners. This year’s headliners feature acclaimed musicians The Kentucky Headhunters, The Lacs and Sammy Kershaw. Grammy-winning Southern blues rockers The Kentucky Headhunters will hit the stage Friday night at SOTW. The band is touring in support of their new album release, Meet Me in Bluesland. The Lacs and legendary county singer Sammy Kershaw will co-headline Saturday night’s lineup. More than 25 of Kershaw’s singles have entered Top 40 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Also scheduled to perform will be Tyler Hammond, Luke Combs, The Radio Birds, Jon Langston, Kyle Wilson, Royal Johnson, Aces & Eights, Common Rival, Soul Kitchen and Due South. Single day passes are $35 and weekend passes are $50 at the gate. Children under 12 years of age get in free. Stay the weekend and rent a camper spot for $50. Tent camping is just $10 per person. Gates will be open from noon until 11 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.sotwtickets.eventbrite.com. Chairs and blankets are welcome. Coolers will not be allowed inside the concert venue. Mama Hill and Mama Louise have kept Macon’s most diverse clientele well fed with delicious, stick-to-ya-ribs soul food since Otis Redding was just an unknown band member in Johnny Jenkins’ Pinetoppers. On one fateful day in the mid-60’s a group a long hairs pooled their money together for two plates. Mama Louise felt sorry for them and gave them all a heaping helping. A friendship between her and The Allman Brothers Band was born. A friendship that took her on quite a ride that included a seat on the tour bus in 1972 and lifelong friendships with Gregg and the rest of the band. In 2007, Mama Hill passed on, but Mama Louise kept on keepin’ on. She calls us every other day, saying “y’all ready yet! I’m ready to go back to work.” To which we reply, “We’re almost there Mama.”

Meet Dr. Nicole Jackson By Nicole Thurston I sat here for at least an hour trying to figure out how to begin this story. The problem is, I know Nicole, or Dr. Jackson, as many of you may know her. I’ve rubbed elbows with her at galas, I’ve laughed with her at a Leadership Macon social, I’ve bumped into her at the grocery store, I’ve even sat in her chair, as she calmed my nerves during a dental procedure. It’s hard to describe someone who carries herself with such poise and such confidence, and yet exudes an incredible amount of compassion for others. At the end of the day, Dr. Nicole Jackson is a caregiver- to her patients, to her family, and to our community. She comes from humble beginnings in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her father spent over 20 years working in a chemical plant, while her mother stayed home to care for the children, and later worked as a seamstress from home. Though she is one of three children, she says she was raised almost as an only child. “I have a sister who Is 10 years older and a brother (now deceased) who was 8 years older; I grew up much like an only child because of the age difference between my siblings and I.”

Her mother was the driving force behind her determination to always push harder and do better. “She always instilled a strong sense of faith in me. As a result, I grew up always believing that anything is possible,” she explained, “She also did an excellent job of boosting my self-esteem. As a gifted student throughout my schooling, I always had great grades and I was always self-motivated. I don’t think my parents ever had to tell me to do my homework or study. At some point during my childhood, I became laser beam focused on setting myself up to always have options.” That laser-like intensity is what pushed Jackson to go further and excel in her career. As a child, she thought she wanted to be a lawyer, that was, until she spent a day in Atlanta shadowing a corporate attorney. “The summer after my sophomore year of college was life changing. My brother-in-law, a local dentist, needed some help around the office and asked me to pitch in. I was happy to help, but had no idea that he would have me assisting him chair side during dental procedures. I instantly fell in love! That same summer, I shadowed a lawyer in Atlanta for a day and instantly fell out of love with the idea of a career as a lawyer!” From that point on, she dedicated her

focus to pursuing a career in dentistry. She decided to attend Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee. “My decision was based partly on my family legacy at Meharry (both my sister and brother-in-law are Meharry alumni). I was also overly impressed with their mission of serving the underserved.” But this wasn’t the end. She would also end up joining the United States Air Force. “The Air Force was an attractive option to me because their post-graduate training programs were the best in the country. This was also when I met my husband, Chris” Fast forward a couple of years, and you have the Jackson 5 in Macon, Georgia. Not that Jackson 5, more like: Chris, Nicole, and their four children Alexis, Amaya, Elijah, and Carter. Outside of dentistry, her passion is her family. Dr. Jackson works for Northside Family Dentistry in Macon, as well as has an active involvement in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Joshua’s Wish Foundation, Macon Area Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Hospital Champions of Hope, United Way of Central Georgia, Central Georgia Tech’s Dental Hygiene Advisory Board, and Leadership Macon Alumnus (2014.) 11thHourOnline.com 17

STOREFRONT What Roasted Cafe & Lounge Where 442 Second Street What’s New? New Dinner Menu Wed-Sat

D I N N E R I S S E RV E D . By Nicole Thurston What started out as a simple coffee house and event space has transitioned into a Mediterranean dining experience. Nicholas Rizkalla, partner and general manager of Roasted Café, transports diners across the sea to Egypt with a wide array of authentic Mediterranean food. After four years of serving coffee, teas, and a heart heathy lunch, Rizkalla decided to offer visitors to downtown another option for dinner Wednesday through Saturday. “Things that have been going on have definitely affected business,” explained Rizkalla, “Like these Cox Capitol Theatre sell out shows are helping. This has been a huge success to Second Street. Finally, we are moving, and I know that more things are coming and we are excited about that.” The increase in traffic on Second Street in the evenings has made an economic impact on businesses that bought into the concept of developing around the corner from the more established Cherry Street. With the opening of Bearfoot Tavern, Main Street Pizza, El Camino and the sellout concerts at Cox Capitol Theatre, 18 MARCH 22 - APRIL 5, 2016

the most logical move for Roasted was to step up and offer another dinner option. The dinner menu will feature many of the lunchtime favorites, but also include some new items. Diners will get to try Chicken, Steak or Lamb Kebabs. Each plate will be served on a bed of saffron rice with seasonal sautéed vegetables. Another favorite will soon become the Rosemary Honey Mustard Chicken. It is a grilled chicken tossed in a home-made Dijon honey mustard and rosemary, also served with a bed of saffron rice and sautéed seasonal vegetables. The highest price point is $13. “What we do differently is that we get all of our spices, down to the oregano -we bring in from Egypt. It gives it that unique taste and flavor,” said Rizkalla, “Everything is going to be Mediterranean infused – We have our own blend that we put together, and it all will have that fusion.” Not only are their spices imported directly from Egypt, but they also have a special grower that provides their Hibiscus blend for their show-stopping Hibiscus tea. And that’s just the beginning to their menu expan-

sion. “We also have a new beer and wine menu, with an extended wine list. Before we only did a couple of house wines.” Some additions that will be a crowd favorite include an Organic Chocolate Milk Stout, by Sam Smith, as well as an Original Sin Elderberry Cider. With over 13 new wines and champagne, and over 24 beers and cider, the additional offerings are sure to be a welcome change. Along with dinner, be on the lookout for Disco Lunch, a monthly event offered on First Fridays at Roasted. “We are not going to do events like we used to,” explained Rizkalla, “We still have some things, Disco Lunch is doing well. On April 1st, Megan Jean will be here. We will probably start to stick with the food side of things and music will just be an added little bonus.” Rizkalla said that Roasted will probably stick to acoustic music or a light DJ for the dinner crowd. “We will probably start to stick with the food side of things and music will just be an added little bonus.” For more information, visit their website at www. roastedmacon.com or follow them on Facebook.

Op-Ed

It’s Not Just Trump Fans As of today, it is now down to three candidates on the Republican side and two on the Democrat from a field which at its’ apex had seventeen from the GOP and five from the Dems. What a ride it has been to dwindle it down to the five that we have left. That being said, there is no end in sight on either side with each party still slugging it out until the bitter end with Donald Trump leading the way on the Republican side with his overbearing and mean-spirited campaign that has laid carnage to everyone who dares cross his path with Senator Ted Cruz vowing to be the only one left who can beat the Donald and Governor John Kasich of Ohio trying to remain the only adult in the race. (For the record, it is a mathematical impossibility for Kasich to win at this point as he would have to get 103% of the total remaining delegates still at stake.) The Dems have Hillary Clinton who is the only person that I know of who can claim to be a non-establishment candidate yet tout her record as an establishment Senator, Secretary of State and First Lady, and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders who is this years’ burr under Hillary’s saddle who just won’t go away. Mr. Trump has insulted everyone in the race, told people that he could shoot someone and his supporters would still follow him, still has yet to come up with a policy of any substance, made fun of a handicapped reporter but yet is winning in every part of the country because he has tapped into that “Silent Majority” that Richard Nixon claimed in 1968. Trump’s latest remarks have more than upset a lot of folks, including myself, when he told reporters that if he didn’t get the nomination there would be “riots” in the streets as he felt there would be millions of disenfranchised voters. His incendiary comments are more than reprehensible as now he has countless apologists that are taking his side by saying that he is merely prophesying events. With Trump’s record of barking threats and nonsense it appears that he is hardly trying to be Nostradamus but is more like someone who wants to stir up a crowd by suggestion. Let’s get a few things straight: 1. The nominee must get the minimum number of delegates required for nomination NOT a majority of the delegates even though they have been scattered among several candidates. 2. If there is no candidate to reach the minimum number of delegates required for nomination on the FIRST ballot, a second ballot and more ballots will be done until

a candidate obtains the minimum number of delegates required for nomination. 3. After the first ballot, if there is no candidate that has reached the minimum number of delegates required, the delegates are free to vote for whomever they want. (Some of them can even do that on the first ballot if their state permits them.) I understand that people are upset and damned tired of the current administration as well as the direction that our country has been heading towards, but the rules are in place for a reason and that is to keep order. Unfortunately, Mr. Trump is getting all of his supporters fired up as well as those that are on the sidelines thinking that the GOP is going to screw him out of the nomination and subsequently them out of their say in instilling him as the nominee of the Republican Party. I’ve had some people tell me that Rule 40(b) is the one that will guarantee Trump the nomination as he could be the only one who would be able to meet it. Rule 40(b) was enacted during the 2012 GOP Convention to limit the number of candidates who would be put into nomination, mainly to suppress any involvement of Congressman Ron Paul. The fact of the matter is there will be plenty of opportunities before the Convention to change Rule 40(b) as it was a temporary rule enacted for the last convention. I’m sure that’s what has Trump upset thinking the GOP will do something at that point to rob him of the nomination. In my opinion, he won’t have to worry so long as he gets to the magic number of 1237. If he doesn’t the GOP has no obligation. If you have read any of my previous columns, I do not like Donald Trump and I feel that he is a virus that is completely killing the Republican Party, but if he gets the minimum number of delegates he deserves the nomination. If he does not, I sincerely hope that someone who is less divisive, more conservative and a better statesman in general will wipe that smug look off of his face and send him back to Trump Tower with his tail tucked between his legs. Again, in my opinion, we wouldn’t be faced with a possible nominee like Mr. Trump had GOP Party Chairman Reince Preibus not gotten all of the Presidential hopefuls to sign that worthless loyalty pledge that ultimately has done nothing but legitimize Trump who is no more a true Republican than Hillary Clinton, although at least Hillary was a Goldwater Girl in 1964. Don’t take that as a sign that I will vote for her if Trump and her are our choices. It’s not. 11thHourOnline.com 25

The Scene JAIMO

T H E I N T E RV I E W b y B R I A N W H I T L E Y

Jai Johanny Johanson is better known as Jaimoe. He is best known as one of the founding

members of The Allman Brothers Band, though he’s played with too many greats to try and name. Johanson backed soul singers, including a membership in Otis Redding’s touring band in 1966, and afterward touring with the acclaimed soul duo, Sam & Dave. After joining up

with Duane Allman in 1969, he quickly became the

first recruit into Allman’s new group, soon joined by

bassist Berry Oakley, fellow drummer Butch Trucks, guitarist Dickey Betts and lastly Allman’s younger

brother, singer, organist and pianist Gregg Allman. Since then, well, you know the story.

Who Les Brers When March 23 and 24 Where Cox Capitol Theatre

Les Brers Featuring Butch Trucks, Jaimoe, Oteil, Marc Quinones, Jack Pearson, Bruce Katz, Pat Bergeson You are the only ABB member that lived in Macon during the R&B days, before the town became known for Southern Rock. Can you share a few memories from that time? I moved to Macon in ‘68 to play in the Capricorn band, which was an undercover thing. A friend of mine called me and said “Hey man, Phil Walden is putting together a recording studio.” I think originally it was in the Grand Opera House or over there somewhere. There used to be a recording studio over there somewhere. So I went down there to play in this studio band. He wanted to get all these guys together who used to play in Clarence Carters band, Joe Tex’s band. All these guys he wanted to get together to form one great studio band. I think I’m the only one that went down there just for that and nothing else. Was Phil trying to emulate what he’d seen down in Alabama? Phil had real good insight about a whole lot of shit man. He was looking for what we got into and eventually became at that point. He wasn’t interested in doing the same type stuff that Hall was doing in Alabama. He wanted his own direction. And he built a hell of a studio, man. What about those early days was different, businesswise, than when ABB came along? It was very similar. It was business as usual. Just different levels. Phil had already been used to dealing with single artists, and to him, the band was this artist. So Phil took care of the business, so the band didn’t’ have to be distracted from the art. In that respect, it was business as usual for Phil. He was use to dealing with the business side. We weren’t. I’m a big fan of the Grateful Dead. And I’m reading Billy Kreutzmann’s memoir right now. He talks about how he became a better drummer once Mickey joined the dead. Did you have that experience, playing with a second drummer? I played in high school with another drummer. That’s something I don’t understand with a lot of drummers. Most would sit and look at the other drummer and do what he was doing. You do that in marching bands. But it’s kind of backwards. They are both percussion

instruments. But they are their own instruments. My whole approach to that thing was “This is two percussions.” Think about it. If you had two guitarists how would you do it, two trumpet players how would you do it. It’s the same with drums. Some ask how can you do that, I ask how can you NOT do that. Everybody plays a part. It’s about a union becoming one. Regardless of how great everyone is, if you can’t think as one it’s not going to be as good. Did you become “One” a lot? Everyone was killing it just about every night. When E.J. was down here working at The Big House museum, he sent me some tapes, one of the first things that we recorded. From there until, now check this out, from there until Chuck and Lamar came in the band. And when Chuck and Lamar came in the band, that whole period was over with. The energy was different. Not saying it wasn’t good, it was just different. If I hadn’t had those tapes, it’s like every two weeks, what a step we made forward. In those tapes, you can hear that advancement. The amount we grew was monumental. I thank EJ for sending me those tapes. It reminded me of listenting to Coltrane’s band. A band like Coltrane’s, they must have advanced every two or three nights as much as they improvised. And those early days remind me of that. You were there when Eric and Duane met for the first time. Tom Dowd brought Eric by when we were at a gig in Miami. We took a break or something. Tom introduced Eric and Duane. Invited him to the studio when we were done with the gig. There are some tapes on that. We all went over to the studio. Anyway, I went in there. It just wasn’t my groove. I wasn’t really impressed by it. If something is not happening, what’s the point right. I went out to the winnebego we had and put on some records. We listened to Roland Kirk, Miles Davis, Tony Wiggins, Taj Mahal, that kind of stuff, so I just stayed in the winnebego and listened to the things I was into. In the 1980’s in Macon you were teaching drum lessons out of your home in Macon. Did any student’s

kind of stick out. The lady that came from South Carolina. Shit man she was like a a brown belt or some shit. She played drums. She looked like she would knock a dude out. She was gorilla looking. You didn’t’ want to mess with her. I can’t remember he name but she would knock your ass out if you didn’t watch it. How old are you Brian? I’m 43. Born in 1973. I missed out on some good music didn’t I? You know Dickey may have said to me one time. I would have loved to live in the 40’s I acted a lot like those guys, and played a lot like them in a way, and I would have been right at home. And I said no, this is my period. My era. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. This is it. You were probably a little too young to be involved in the beat generation? Shit naw. I Was a beatnik. When the hippie thing came along it was just the next thing. But yeah I was too young, but I still thought I was a beatnik because I saw them on TV in their glasses, and beating on those Congos with their fingers. Some of my friends thought I was going to be the next Max Roach. When they saw me up there with the Allman Brothers they were like “Man, what you doing with all those white boys?” I said, “How does the band sound?” “Good But” “BUT WHAT? How have things changed for you as you’ve gotten older as a musician and a band member? When I walk in a building, and snap my fingers, I know how loud to play. If you playing to loud, then turn the fuck down right? That’s why as you get older you get hard of hearing. Sitting in front of all those Marshall Amps all your life. Butch Trucks, you can yell at him with a damn megaphone and he can’t hear you , but he can tell you when your guitar is out of tune like it ain’t nothing.

LIVE SHOW REVIEW

A Day Trip to Americus & the Indie Label:

This Is American Music words Chris Nylund; photos Brian Whitley Though there are less than twenty thousand residents, Americus is a curious lil’ gem of a town. They have a bourbon distillery (Thirteenth colony). The state’s “first and only 100% fair trade, organic coffee company”, Café Campesino, is based there. It also happens to have a killer southern indie label called This is American Music (TIAM) operating out of a house not far from the town square. Occasionally, this house hosts a show for one of its touring artists. This was one of those occasions. Most of our trip to Americus consisted of two lane highways lined with pecan trees, winding through dairy farms and rolling fields dimly lit by the setting sun. Upon arriving in Americus, we dined on 10-dollar all-you-can-eat pizza at an establishment that served everything from the aforementioned pizza to tuna steak. Shortly after sitting down, I found myself engaged in a lively discussion regarding the cultural importance of Smokey and the Bandit, bonding with a neighboring table in mutual horror as both parties discovered that our teenage hostess not only hadn’t seen the film but hadn’t even heard of it. In short, Americus won me over instantly. With a full belly and an idyllic drive through the country now behind me, I set my sights on the main attraction: a house show featuring Caleb Caudle hosted by the so-called “quarterback” of TIAM, Corey Flegel. As I approached the house, the welcome cacophony of clinging bottles and belly laughs effusing from the front porch washed away any doubt that this night was going to be anything less than spectacular. Backed by a killer band of musicians in the front room of an old house cov-

ered in old show posters, Caudle’s songs immediately took center stage. The thing I absolutely love about smaller shows is that the audience is forced to pay attention in the best way possible—groupthink takes over, keeps everyone in check, and allows the music to shine in ways that it is often unable to in a smoky bar, where music must compete with the din of slurred conversations slap full of worn out pick-up lines. As Caudle and his band (which consisted of pedal steel, bass, drums, and keys) plowed tracks off his critically-acclaimed record, Carolina Ghost, I was immediately taken to that place that all music lovers hunger for, that place where time and space no longer exist; all that matters in that moment is what’s coming through the holes in the side of your head. The somber song, “Uphill Battle,” instantly evoked an image of a couple dancing in front of a barn burning to the ground, a pair that is “in it to win it” and damn the consequences, a sentiment reinforced with lines like “I will be there in the morning / like I am tonight.” As the band’s set progressed, Caudle also shared some keys to songwriting success, admitting that the album’s closer, “The Reddest Rose,” was penned in

a Bojangles parking lot, further mythologizing the idea that greatness is fueled by great chicken biscuits. Caleb Caudle has garnered acclaim from Paste magazine, The Bitter Southerner and the Huffington Post. His name is thrown around in the same breathe as Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton, and for good reason, but don’t get it twisted: Caudle isn’t a carbon copy of anyone else. A great songwriter is able to weave stories in song in a manner that is familiar and fresh with seemingly little effort. In that regard, Caudle is like Isbell and Stapleton, but the comparison should end there. Another track from Carolina Ghost, “Borrowed Smiles,” is a “party song about getting sober” that tackles a difficult issue in an up-tempo major key in the same way that a classic track from Stax or the glory days of country music used to. That sentiment is the crux of Caudle’s approach: presenting songs in a manner that hearkens back to a different time in music, a time before teenagers went wild over robot farts blasting over galloping electronic bass lines created on a laptop. When a great song could actually be heard on the radio. The forty or fifty of us got to revel in the glory of great songs performed by great musicians on a random Friday night in a the living room of an old house. Judging by his album and more importantly, his performance, his fan base and the venues are about to grow quite a bit. Check out more photos from Brian Whitley and music coverage, including a review of Caleb Caudle’s album Carolina Ghost, at fieldnotestenographers.com.

2. Least favorite drink to make

EMILY ALLIGOOD The Crazy Bull

1. Favorite Cocktail I love a good Guiness or Crown apple and cranberry myself. My favorite drinks to make are pretty simple but taste great. The Crazy Bull drink is simply Absolute, Red Bull and Cranberry juice. I work at the Crazy Bull Guitar Bar so I felt only fitting to name a drink after BB King’s famous guitar Lucille, this drink is simple and sweet like the music Mr. King played it consists of Malibu passion fruit, razz-berry vodka, cranberry juice, sour mix and a splash of grenadine. 34 MARCH 22 - APRIL 5, 2016

...Is definitely the Vegas Bomb!!

3. Do’s & Don’ts

Definitely have fun and challenge me, I love to learn new recipes. Do be patient on a busy night. Don’t be disrespectful to myself or my customers, please don’t slap on the bar or yell at me.

4. Hobbies

I love to read! I enjoy anything I can do outdoors with my sweet puppy. I also enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family. I love to travel and learn everything I can about other cultures. I am an enormous history buff as well.

5. Best recent night on the town

I work two jobs so nights out don’t happen often, but my favorite recent one was spent with great friends. We started the day at Cheers on Northside having what I believe is one of the best burgers in town and cold beer, then off to Wild Wings to see some of my favorite bartenders, followed up by a trip to my favorite local spot Wagers. Spending time with friends is always a great time!
