Betty Cantrell talks touring the country as Miss America to recording her first country music album Betty Cantrell’s powerful voice helped win her the 2016 Miss America title, and now may also send her soaring into southern music stardom. The 21-year-old became the second woman from central Georgia to win the coveted Miss America crown, 63 years after Macon native, Neva Jane Langley Fickling won the title. Coincidentally, Cantrell perfected her operatic vocals in the recital hall named for Fickling at Mercer’s Townsend School of Music. After a year touring the country representing the national pageant, Cantrell is eager to move on to her true love, the world of country music. Cantrell’s vocal training began classically at the age of 14, but it is her memories of growing up on a farm in Fort Valley that guide her musical journey today. A graduate of Mount de Sales Academy and student of Mercer University, she was 19 when a friend convinced 12 DEC 2 - 16, 2016
her to enter her first pageant. Three pageants later, she was crowned Miss America, in large part due to her impressive vibrato and southern charm, both of which are helping her make a name for herself on the country music scene. “So many people expected me to go into opera, but I never had a love for that. I’ve always loved country music,” she said. Cantrell’s connection to Mercer and the Townsend School of Music has created a unique opportunity for the singer. Mercer announced its plans to revive Macon’s historic Capricorn Studios late last year in conjunction with a large new development along MLK. Aptly named Mercer Music at Capricorn; Cantrell has been asked to be the first artist to record at the legendary home of southern rock since the building returned to Mercer’s ownership last month.
Mercer alumnus and multi-award winning musician and producer, Steve Ivey, will record Cantrell and up-and-coming artist Jonathan Wyndham at the historic studio. Cantrell has the distinct honor of recording “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Macon’s own Otis Redding. Cantrell said Ivey reached out and told her, “you have to be the first person to record (at Mercer Music at Capricorn)… and we’re going to do an Otis Redding song.” Wyndham will record the classic Marshall Tucker hit “Can’t You See.” Ivey is a Mercer alumnus who has made a name for himself in Nashville as a multi-Emmy, Grammy and Dove award-winner and nominee. His music has been in the Billboard Top 10 sales charts for an astounding 1,000 weeks, with over 10 million units sold, including music he has produced and written. Top artists he has
produced music for include Dolly Parton, Aaron Neville, Willie Nelson and Vince Gill, among others. “For Betty Cantrell who is such a talented singer and grew up in the Macon area, we began thinking about music created there and what had a huge significance on her,” said Ivey. “She loves Otis Redding and so the decision was easy.” As a fellow graduate of Mercer’s Townsend School of Music, Ivey would occasionally speak to classes about Music Entrepreneurship. “Essentially the process of how to take an elite music degree like the students get at Mercer and translate that into making a living.” Ivey notes when the conversation of rebuilding Capricorn began, he was quick to offer his knowledge and know-how, not to mention the opportunity to work with Cantrell and the ability to kick-off a new chapter in Macon music history. Thrilled with the song choice, and the honor of recording one of the soulful legend’s most recognizable hits, Cantrell said “I’m super excited to put my own twist on it!” The recording session will take place Wednesday, Dec. 7. Former Capricorn session musician Paul Hornsby will support the artists on keyboard, along with other local talents, including Charles Davis, Rob Evans, Leroy Wilson and students from Mercer’s Townsend School of Music. While closed to the public, local radio station 100.9 The Creek will be providing a live remote and interviews throughout the day. A Facebook live feed will also be available to view throughout the recording session. Cantrell traveled roughly 20,000 miles a month as the national titleholder for the Miss America organization after winning in Atlantic City. She won over the judges during the talent competition with her rendition of “Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio” from Madame Butterfly. “I like songs that are dramatic and can reach people on an emotional level because that creates a connection between the audience and the performer,” she says. “Being Miss America has definitely launched my music career. I wouldn’t be where I am today with my country music if it wasn’t for the national pageant.” During her time as Miss America, she championed Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and partnered with the American Farm Bureau Foundation. Her personal platform is “Healthy Children, Strong America” which she says stems from her roots in Fort Valley and her family’s dedication to a healthy lifestyle. (Her parents also own the Cantrell Center for Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine in Warner Robins.) She admits translating her operatic and classically trained background into country music may be somewhat difficult. However, she is confident she’ll easily make the transition while maintaining the traits that vocally set her apart. “If you can sing opera, it will help you in every other genre. It teaches you the healthy ways to sing, such as breathing techniques.” The main difficulties she mentioned were making sure her vowels were southern enough. After her year as Miss America, she teased that she’s trying to regain her charming country accent. Her new single and first music video, “Soldier On,” will be available on Itunes, Spotify and YouTube in December. She says that it “will be like nothing anyone has ever heard before. It’s about women in the military… there is no other song about that.” Cantrell’s family history in the military played a prominent role in her decision to record the song in her debut EP. Her dad was an airborne army ranger, her grandfather fought in Korea, WWII and Vietnam and her uncle was also in the army. “I could relate to (Soldier On) because, without giving away the song, there’s one part that talks about her dad being her inspiration and since my dad was in the military, I really liked that and I knew so many (others) could relate to that.” Cantrell credits Linda Ronstadt as an example of who she wants to model her music career after, because the veteran singer has been able to cross over genres. “I’m really old fashioned. I don’t want to be pop country.” She laughed and joked about not wanting to sing about trucks and beer. “I’m really, really excited for people to hear my country side and to be able to relate to me on that level because so many people relate to country music.” She said. “It’s hard to relate to Miss America, even though I made that my mission during my year to be relatable… Music is definitely the best way to reach people.” Cantrell plans to move to Tennessee in December with her fiancé/manager Spencer Maxwell. Although she loves Tennessee, Cantrell was adamant that her music will be rooted in central Georgia and Macon will always be home. “Every time I participated in an award show, I always told them I hope to be back next year or the year after as a performer.” She had the opportunity to present an award alongside Darius Rucker at the 2016 CMA’s. Bets are on Betty to be the next new voice of country music.

Mercer Music at Capricorn Capricorn Studio, co-founded by the late Phil Walden, a Mercer alumnus, during its heyday recorded such acts as the Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie, Elvin Bishop and the Marshall Tucker Band and was the epicenter of Southern Rock. For more than a decade, the facility sat vacant and fell into disrepair until it was purchased and stabilized by NewTown Macon with a grant from the Peyton Anderson Foundation. In 2010, it was named one of Georgia’s most endangered historic buildings. Along with local developers, the historic Capricorn Studio is now part of the largest market-rate residential development in the history of downtown Macon. Mercer University has committed to raising an additional $1 million to complete restoration of the historic structure, which will be known as Mercer Music at Capricorn. lifelong music aficionado, Ross Riddle majored in Music Business at Belmont University in Nashville; during his college years, he interned at Sony Music, then later took a job working in their mailroom. A budding interest in fashion brought him to New York in 2010, where he found an internship with a clothing brand a few months after arriving. He’s been working in fashion ever since, and he’s now the founder and lead designer of Rosser Riddle, a successful line of vintage-feeling yet strikingly modern soul/R&B inspired t-shirts and sweatshirts; his clothing design aesthetic is a perfect blend of simple, classic style and a deep personal appreciation for a particular slice of musical history. “I love soul music, and R&B,” Ross says, “And I really wasn’t seeing the artists and genres properly represented on clothing, so I wanted to give it a try myself.” Of course, any deep fan of music knows that middle Georgia has produced more than its fair share of important, talented musicians, and Ross’s shirts – among them one that simply reads MACON, GA as a lovely homage to our city’s role in so many musical lives – reflect that. Meet Roger Jackson Native Macon, GA Occupation Director of The Motivating Youth Foundation
ROGER
Jackson is a man who understands firsthand the importance of hard work, determination, and local community support when it comes to living a successful life. Jackson grew up the son of a single mother in Macon’s Tindall Heights housing project; after graduating from Central High School, he went on to get his Bachelors of Science in Physical Education from Bethune Cookman College. After that, he moved straight to a career in the NFL - first as a defensive back for the Denver Broncos, then as a scout for 13 years. After retiring from the NFL, Jackson wasted no time pursuing his next dream – he returned home to Macon with the intention of finding a way to help give back to the community that he came from. Soon after, in February of 2009, Motivating Youth Foundation opened its doors,
shortly after the disheartening news came that Bibb County Board of Education had been forced to discontinue 13 after-school programs due to budget cuts. MOYO, which offers both an after school program and a summer camp, is designed to help kids become focused, positive, motivated learners and community members; their goal is to build children who will be the first (but not the last) in their families to attend and complete college. One way they help these local children achieve their goals is via their annual car raffle, which is entering its sixth year this year. All proceeds from the sales of the raffle tickets go directly towards the MOYO scholarship fund, which has so far helped over 100 middle Georgia students attend college. This year, tickets are $25 each, and the grand prize is your choice of either a 2016 Chevy Malibu, a 2016 Chevy Cruze, or $10,000 cash. Second place winner receives a $1000 gift card from Ken’s Stereo, while third place winner gets a $500 Ken’s gift card. Raffle tickets are on sale now, and

more we can move this thing forward and really help some kids. Ideally, I’m setting all this up so that after I’m gone, it’ll still be operating.” Right now, Jackson is still very much here, working tirelessly and joyfully in all aspects of the MOYO Foundation, and serving as mentor and inspiration for countless young people; he’ll be an enthusiastic presence on December 23 at 3 pm at MidSouth Credit Union, where he’ll be drawing names and contacting raffle winners. aron Lee Tasjan doesn’t give a sh*t if his album Silver Tears makes the Top 40. Frankly, he doesn’t give a sh*t if you buy a Nickelback album instead of Silver Tears. Aaron Lee just wants to make the music he wants to make and with just one listen through his record, that should be fine by us. Aaron called into the offices here at The 11th Hour and The Creek for a quick chat before his show at The Hummingbird Stage & Taproom on December 16th. Listen up. You just released your new Silver Tears in October, tell us about some of the stories and themes that make up this album. You know man, here’s the thing. It’s like, I could probably make something up and tell you that the songs are about me dealing with my childhood or some bullshit like that but the truth is I took a bunch of drugs and made songs in my bedroom because that’s what I do. There’s no fucking method to it, or I’m not trying to deliver some sort of message or something like that. I’m just trying to be really good at writing songs and that’s always the goal: every time I do it I want to make something better than the last time I made it. I just try to do, kind of what’s moving me. That’s the one key, I have to feel invested in it otherwise I can’t really sing it. How autobiographical is “12 Bar Blues”? That’s all true, pretty much. 11th Street Bar was my main bar in New York City. I was there every night when I wasn’t on the road for about ten years. I probably left that place more at like six in the morning then I ever did at a reasonable hour [laughing]. Philip Levine came to speak when I went to Idyllwild Arts Academy when I was in the 8th grade to study Spanish guitar and there was a big thing at our school about censorship and so they had Philip Levine come and do a talk and I bought all of his poetry books that day and read all of them. I was already pretty into poetry because my mom used to be an English teacher so she had a lot of poetry books around the house like E. E. Cummings and older stuff like William Wordsworth and stuff like that so I was already reading a lot of that kind of stuff but then Philip Levine was just such a captivating character when he talked and read his poems to us and stuff and I really liked what he had to say about censorship so he kind of worked his way into that song as did a lot of other things [laughing]. I was unabashedly, I was a fan of Hootie & The Blowfish when they came out man, Cracked Rear View, I got that tape when I was like nine or ten I think, and I had
been listening to a bunch of Boyz 2 Men and other vocal groups, like All-4-One and stuff like that when I was that age, and I got into Hootie & The Blowfish because I think the songs were like, so simple and easy to wrap your brain around. I don’t like hearing people rag on musicians for no reason, I feel like at this point making fun of Nickelback is just like making fun of yourself, because it’s such a well made point [laughing], no one’s sitting around thinking like “Jeez, maybe like Hootie & The Blowfish is like Beethoven or something!” Everybody knows it’s not some unbelievably amazing thing, it’s just Charleston, South Carolina bar-rock music, but it’s great though. And I think that dude is a cool dude, Darius Rucker. You’ve had a really interesting journey so far in your career, working with all sorts of different artists, what are some of the collaborations you’ve enjoyed most to this point? I was really proud to get to play in Drivin’ N Cryin’, that was a really big one for me. You’re kind of talking to a dude who’s been told he’s getting a “big break” like a million times and its always just exactly the same, everybody is just like, “Man, this is it, you guys are gonna be huge!” And then that never happens. But what’s interesting about that is that seems more like a thing that they want to say to me than I feel like I want or am wanting or needing to happen, you know what I mean? I get asked a lot of questions by journalists like “When will you feel like you’ve made it,” or whatever and I kinda feel like I made it ten years ago when I didn’t have to have any other jobs other than playing music. It’s kind of an interesting thing to think about, but I’ve done so many different things, Semi-Precious Weapons got signed to Razor & Tie when I was still living in New York and I was twenty-one or twenty-two years old, that was like the first time anything really happened. Then, playing with The [New York] Dolls from there, and then joining Alberta Cross and playing in Everest and all those bands;

we were doing all kinds of fun gigs in those groups and Drivin’ N Cryin’ was like the last real band that I joined and played in. It was a different thing for me only because those guys were much, much older than I am and have lived this crazy life. You’ll be in the van with Kevin Kinney and he’ll be telling you about the time that he went on tour with The Who and Sonic Youth and Neil Young, and you’re just sitting there like, “Yeah, I gotta mow my lawn when I get home.” I needed to stop and do something for myself, to kinda define something in my life because I sorta just meandered through all of these different situations. I mean I’m kind of meandering through this to be honest with you. It’s different because there’s really something at stake this time around and because I have to answer through all of it. I try to make it all have some sort of purpose and like, I would just love to have some positive dent on the whole thing, whatever it is. Is it more of an attitude of just like, “Ef it, I don’t really care if there’s a big break, I would rather just make the music I want to make”? Yeah, I think it’s about focusing, making the focus on the music and the show and the art, and letting the ‘Top 50 Album of the Year’ lists thing just roll off your back because you’re in trouble if you start to believe any of that stuff, I think. I’ve seen young artists buy into the press and the stuff that’s being written about them and I think that’s dangerous. I try to just not be aware of any of it, and just try to be really good at playing music instead. You played Macon’s music festival Bragg Jam this past summer, what was that experience like for you? Bragg Jam is cool, man. I had a great time, I had a better time seeing bands than I did playing because I was playing in like a really weird thing but I loved it. The festival was really cool. I hung out mostly at The Hummingbird, I was watching Susto play and I really enjoyed their band a lot, and then I ran into a bunch of Nashville friends there so we were just standing out on the back deck being degenerates which was awesome [laughing]. Can we expect to see some sparkly suits and big cowboy hats when you come back to Macon Dec. 16th at The Hummingbird Stage & Taproom? [Laughing] Man, I’ve really expanded my wardrobe. THE REINCARNATION OF HANK VEGAS
Chad Evans, Denny Hanson, Jared Wright, Chris Nylund, John Spiegel In the mid 2000’s many Macon music scenesters were well acquainted with a band called Hank Vegas, also known as the alter-ego of lead singer and acoustic guitarist Chad Evans. The band’s nostalgic country twangs were often entwined with rock guitar riffs and haunting lyrics echoing the voice of Michael Stipe, although more lulling. Hank Vegas, sometimes referred to as alt-country or country-noir, blended a gritty sound with delicacy that seemed to paint a harmonious musical landscape, every note a well placed brush stroke. Although the band dismembered soon after their 2007 album release of The Things You Are, Hank Vegas has reemerged revealing that good things are sometimes just too hard to quit and giving Middle Georgia another chance to partake in their musical endeavors. With members Denny Hanson (guitar/keys), Jared Wright (guitar), Chris Nylund (bass), and John Spiegel (drums) on board, Hank Vegas is in the beginnings of a new era. I talked with the guys about what the future holds for the band and their, dare I say, hankering to get back in the music scene as Hank Vegas. What initiated the comeback of Hank Vegas? Just about every one of the guys brings a history and a relationship to the Hank Vegas idea, either as players from previous incarnations or journalists who were covering the scene and the band at one time or another, and Hank Vegas was such a collective idea even years ago, featuring members from lots of other projects, like the Liabilities, the Roly Bots, Heather Kemp, Rob Evans, John Neff, Vic Stanley, the HV network is wide and tangled. A lot has changed in Macon in the last few years, it not being 2007 for instance, which was a rough year for travel and music to live together. The players working the project now have all been really busy over the last few years. We’ve been working on our community and our families, getting into safe and stable places in our creative minds, Field Note Stenographers, the Moonhanger Group and all it’s busyness, and it just suddenly seemed like we were all in the same room again, friends and musicians that understood what Hank Vegas was about and we wanted

Do you think you are reforming the band in a sense or doing something completely different? How so? The word atavism comes to mind, not in the primitive or biological sense, but as a return to an original form. Start with the song and the message, then treat it respectfully. I think the concept of Hank Vegas, as a persona, is one that moves through and around American myths or can simply exist as a narrator in a story of love or loss. Either way, we’re back to storytelling first and foremost. At one time, I felt completely lost in my equipment, carrying a Les Paul around my neck and stomping around on pedals. We all have discussed what we want to contribute and how, and there seems to be a real comfortable space within the group right now.
to get back on the horse. There’s no shortage of material, that’s never been an issue. The social climate in Macon seems to beg our creativity as well. We’ve built some good infrastructure downtown, got some stages and some kitchens and some media, the hierarchy of needs suggests it’s time for Hank Vegas to get dressed up again. We’ve also got a few buddies that we feel like may play our newer recordings. What do you feel is different about the sound of Hank Vegas this time around? This group, as Chris points out, seems to be deeply rooted keeping the aesthetic clearly defined. We like to discuss the story and the narrative together, we talk about cinema and soundscapes, we collaborate and share impressions, then we try to work them out. It’s heady and it’s organic simultaneously. We’re also trying to make clever statements in a really accessible form, flirting with really classic songwriting styles and tones yet trying to tell postmodern tales in sound.
You guys played in Athens not too long ago, when do we get to hear you in Macon? We’re working that now. We are anxious to play, and we feel like there are some expectations to meet. But we also have a little more mileage GRANT’S under the hood this time. We fancy ourselves as more seasoned performers across the board and have aspirations to continue working out a strong live performance. Macon will get a glimpse soon enough. They may even get the full monty if we’re all lucky. I hear you are preparing on a new album for 2017. Can you tell me what we can expect? We’re still wood shedding, and so long as that’s good, we will continue with that process. It’s really a magical place to be in with a group of players and with a band, in the same creative and physical space and in a productive mindset so that good work is getting done. Not my advice to mess with winning streaks in any line of work. We’re gonna keep our heads down for a little while. We’re talking about goals and deadlines, but we’re enjoying the new windfall of creativity firstly. That will come to a determined close at some point and we will move to the next phase: recording and traveling a little with the act. There will be some hanky-panky in 2017, I just can’t describe its scope just yet.

He slipped into a blur of booze and self-doubt. Exhausted and damaged at just 23-years-old, Dylan came home to Muscle Shoals, Alabama to write a new life for himself. Thursday 12/15 Local Showcase w/ Bobby Ferguson and Bobby Hall THE HUMMINGBIRD Shooter Jennings & Jason Boland COX CAPITOL THEATRE The only son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings literally spent his childhood on a tour bus. Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, only to break them off and follow his own path to an understanding of the instrument. He discovered guitar at 14 and rock & roll (particularly Southern rock and the loose-limbed hard rock of Guns N’ Roses) at 16. Soon he moved from Nashville to L.A., where he assembled a rock band called Stargunn. Stargunn earned a strong local reputation for its live shows, and enjoyed a six- or seven-year run on the L.A. circuit before Jennings rediscovered his outlaw country roots and dissolved the band. In early January 2016, Jennings announced a February release for Countach, a collection of songs written and/or inspired by legendary producer Giorgio Moroder. The nine-song set featured guest appearances from Marilyn Manson, Brandi Carlile, Steve Young, and video game pioneer Richard Garriott de Cayeux.

of the modern-day Christmas classic, Mary, Did You Know, back to Macon for a hometown Christmas concert! As a young boy in Macon, Buddy first learned to play folk songs on the ukulele, then graduated to the guitar. Soon a band with neighborhood friends was formed (Buddy’s Buddies) and he quickly acquired a flair for entertaining. His early musical influences included Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Motown rhythm & blues artists of the late 60’s, and the Allman Brothers Band, which later led him to explore many of the pioneers of bluegrass, blues, folk, and country music. At age 20 he began playing harmonica, and is currently regarded as one of Nashville’s finest. Buddy co-wrote “Mary, Did You Know?” with friend Mark Lowry, which has become a Christmas season standard recorded by well-known performers such as country greats Kathy Mattea, Kenny Rogers & Wynonna Judd, Reba McEntire, and Glen Campbell, and pop stars Clay Aiken, Mary J Blige, CeeLo Green. Thomas Tillman THE CRAZY BULL Aaron Lee Tasjan THE HUMMINGBIRD Whether playing guitar in the late incarnation of riotous glam-rock innovators the New York Dolls, the gender-bending, envelope-pushing sleaze n’ tease arena rock band Semi Precious Weapons, the Neil Young-signed alt-country act Everest, British roots rock band Alberta Cross, Southern rock stalwarts Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ or even as frontman of the devilishly cleverly-named Heartbreakers meets Replacements rockers Madison Square Gardeners, East Nashville-based musician Aaron Lee Tasjan has always considered himself a songwriter first and foremost, writing his own off-kilter folk-inflected songs since he picked up his first acoustic as a teen guitar prodigy. While Tasjan’s masterful, eclectic songwriting is on full display throughout his new album, his spirited guitar playing never takes a backseat. Instead, the acclaimed guitarist, who was named Distinguished Guitarist at the prestigious Ellington Competition at Carnegie Hall as a teenager and who was awarded a jazz-guitar scholarship to the esteemed Berklee College of Music but who fled to Brooklyn after he decided he wanted to do things on his own, tastefully delivers exactly what each song calls for, from hard-strumming acoustics to psychedelic flourishes to feedback-filled freakouts and twangy licks.
