The story is just getting started.
A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. The money will help The 11th Hour continue to offer great content, and calendars and reviews to our readers for years to come. So purchase your membership today and continue to read Teddy Bear. Theatre Macon’s SUMMER THEATRE FESTIVAL
Summertime in Macon is transforming into a season filled with varied, exciting artistic offerings of all genres. Theatre Macon is throwing their hat into the ring in 2016 with the first annual Summer Theatre Festival this July. The concept is to produce and present three different shows at three different venues; these shows will happen before the Macon Film Festival and Bragg Jam Community Festival & Concert Crawl - both of which come later in the month - thus creating a full arts experience for the Middle Georgia community. The festival will kick off with Ain’t Misbehavin’, a musical celebration of the life of legendary jazz great Fats Waller. This musical will open on July 1 and run through July 16, and all performances will take place at Theatre Macon, located at 438 Cherry Street in historic downtown Macon. Next up is the quirky, irreverent comedy The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), which will open on July 7 in the newly renovated performance space at Mercer University’s Tattnall Center for the Arts and will run through July 16. Finally, the festival will bring us 42nd Street, a classic, revered Broadway musical that operates as a celebration of Broadway itself. Funny, poignant, and uplifting, this thrillingly ambitious large-scale production will open at the beautiful Grand Opera House (located at 651 Mulberry Street) on July 8 and run through July 16. Tickets to all Theatre Macon shows will be $25.00, Grand Opera House tickets will be $35.00, and tickets to performances held at Mercer will be $20.00. There will be a special combination ticket that grants access to all three shows available for $65.00. For more information, contact the Grand Opera House box office at (478) 301-5470 or visit theatremacon.com to learn more about the shows

Although not quite a biography, Ain’t Misbehavin evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

42nd Street: The Musical July 8-16, The Grand Opera House This is the story of hard work, being in the right place at the right time, talent and love. 42ND STREET is a celebration of Broadway and the people involved in shows. It focuses on aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer, and takes us along her journey. Musical hits include You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me, Dames, I Know Now, We’re In the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, Shuffle Off to Buffalo and Forty-Second Street. Every audience enjoys watching the underdog succeed! The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, abridged July 7-16, Tattnall Square Center for the Arts Three guys, one dead playwright, and 37 plays, all in under two hours. In this universally acclaimed theater experience, Adam Long (one of the troupe’s founding members), Reed Marin, and Austin Tichenor manage to compress the complete works of Shakespeare into about an hour and 40 minutes of high-speed over-the- top hilarity. Knowledge about Shakespeare’s works is helpful, but not at all necessary. All that is needed is time enough to watch and someone to dial 911 in case you pass out from laughing so much.

The Creek Will Rise! A N D G O L I V E J U LY 8 AT 1 0 : 0 9 A M .
A new radio station featuring Americana music and local programming will launch July 8 as The Creek 100.9 FM - In partnership with The 11th Hour Local business owners Brad Evans, Wes Griffith and Rob Evans announce the purchase of Macon-based radio station 100.9 WNEX FM. The ownership, now called Creek Media, will re-launch the radio station on July 8 at 10:09 a.m. The Creek 100.9 will feature an Americana music format and aim to globally broadcast the best of the South’s roots music, thoughtful programming and city insight from Macon, Georgia as an independently-owned and operated radio station. In addition to the radio station, Creek Media will operate Star Motel Records, the recording studio and record label founded by Rob Evans in 2007, and the 11th Hour alternative bi-weekly newspaper published by Brad Evans and his wife, Meagan.
Creek Media’s Downtown Macon Headquarters The Creek 100.9 WNEX FM will broadcast from Creek Media’s headquarters at 533 Cherry Street, in the heart of Downtown Macon. The studio overlooks Cherry Street and will be visible from street level. Creek Media will share a lobby with an upcoming expansion of the Rookery, the longtime anchor restaurant of Downtown Macon. Creek Media partner Wes Griffith co-owns Moonhanger Group, a Macon restaurant and hospitality company that includes the Rookery, as well as other local eateries Dovetail, H&H and most recently, El Camino. Moonhanger Group also manages the Cox Capitol Theatre. “Celebrating Macon’s heritage, promoting a sense of pride for community and enhancing its cultural offerings have and continue to be my primary goals as a downtown business owner,” said Griffith. “The Creek, which is named for the mound-builders that first settled our area, will celebrate our heritage and all things Americana. We believe it will be an agent for artistic development in our community and fill a need to share local, regional and national artists who otherwise have no platform to be heard on a stage of this size.” Other plans for the Creek Media headquarters include a performance stage for live music broadcasts and a vinyl record store.
Local Programming & Performances Creek Media plans to bring local programming to the existing radio station, including opportunities to showcase local music.

Creek Media will provide local programming, roots music and a global platform to showcase Central Georgia; in print and on the airwaves. “We want to bring back real community radio to Macon,” said Brad Evans. “This won’t be canned content. Our goal is to broadcast the best of Central Georgia to the world with authentic live music, lifestyle programming and compelling stories from our area. This will be curated by local deejays with a deep knowledge of music and passion for sharing it.” The Creek 100.9 will feature a variety of local and well-known artists like Townes Van Zandt, Chris Stapleton, Taj Mahal, Jason Isbell and many of the musicians who made Macon famous. The Creek 100.9 is currently focusing on content development, which will include a variety of local programming and personalities. Among the local programs planned are a four-hour week-day morning segment, a “Live Lunch” with local tastemakers and business owners, a vinyl hour, where old records are played on the radio, and live band performances in the studio. “We are in the process of developing over 15 different live shows, including a morning and afternoon drive,” added Evans. ““From ‘Honky Tonk Hell with Aaron Irons’ to a segment all about the bar and restaurant industry with Chelsea Hughes called ‘Served,’ we’re having a lot of fun celebrating our regional flavor and personalities as community radio. The Creek 100.9 FM will live and breathe our region.” The Creek will also feature a strong online presence, including a live stream website, a mobile app, and various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The station can be found at WNEXFM.com.
Nurturing the Music Scene The Creek Media partners are no strangers to the Macon music scene. As the co-owner and publisher of the 11th Hour alternative weekly newspaper and website, Brad Evans covers the local music scene since bringing the publication to Macon in 2001. Both Rob and Brad Evans (no relation) and Griffith are founding board members of the Bragg Jam Festival. Brad Evans and Griffith were also the original publishers of Georgia Music Magazine. While Griffith oversees Moonhanger Group’s management of the Cox Capitol Theatre, Rob Evans works as the venue’s production manager. Rob Evans will continue to operate Star Motel Records’ recording studio from his Downtown Macon home, but he will also serve as recording engineer for the radio station. Both the station and his studio will be available resources for local musicians and musicians coming through Macon to perform. “This extension fulfills my desires to develop artistic talent and get new music out there to the public,” said Rob Evans. “Creek Media creates more synergy to capitalize talent. We now have the place to record and perform live but also the media presence to put the record on the air, as well as the 11th Hour and online. This creates opportunity for artists to not only come to Macon but to stay here.” The on-air celebration of the Creek 100.9 FM officially kicks off on July 8, 2016 at 10:09 a.m. The re-launch will feature local musicians and station partners. NATIVE/NEW Meet Khalil Blount aka B3 Native Macon, GA Occupation DJ, Winner 11th Hour Readers’ Choice Awards
11 Random Facts about Khalil: 1. I actually enjoy requests 2. I’ve been doing Martial Arts for 20+ years 3. I like dogs 4. My PSN: ktb3me 5. I’ve had my dreads for 13 years 6. I love gyros 7. I constantly have songs playing in my head 8. J and F Caribbean Delight is my favorite place to eat 9. Soulja Boy and B.O.B.’s DJs think I’m kinda cool 10. #CreateTheCool is a life anthem to me 11. I have DJ’d a house party for 12 hours
Being a great DJ is about so much more than just playing song after song – it means having impeccable and varied taste, confidence in yourself and passion about the music you’re playing, an almost ESP-like ability to read the vibe of a crowd, and of course the technical skills to make everything you’re doing flow in a seamless, exciting sonic way. B3 (aka Khalil Blount), the 11th Hour’s most recent recipient of the Best DJ award, makes all that look easy while still going super hard. Learn more about him below, then do yourself a favor and check out one of his upcoming events. Are you originally from Macon? Pretty much, kinda sorta, Originally from Manhattan, NY. My family moved here in ‘94, after the flood. When did you start DJing? I started DJing seriously in 2009, did my first house party in Lake Wildwood. Do you remember your first show? I just wanted to play some cool tunes at a friend’s house, and he invited a bunch of people over. Next thing I know, people are crowd surfing and having a good time. What is the significance of B3 as your DJ alter ego? My favorite number is 3, and my last name starts with a B, and I’m also the third child in my family. I love how 12 JUNE 30 - JULY 13, 2016
ambiguous it is. It definitely reflects the way I DJ. What’s the best thing about your job? Worst? I love seeing people react to the music I play, especially when I play a real underground track. The worst part has to be the process of proving yourself to people who you want to work for. Saying “hey, I’m a DJ and I can make your venue lots of money” doesn’t seem to work. Are you a big record collector? Tell me about some of your most prized records & some of your best baddest-ass finds. As a DJ, I feel like you have to love records. My collection has grown huge thanks to DJ Structure. He gave me a big portion of his personal collection. I enjoy stumbling into gems! I mostly collect Funk and Disco albums. You get to feel what music was like during those times. My most prized record would be Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz – “Get Low (Merengue Remix ft Pitbull)”. My most badass find has to be Michael Jackson’s Thriller. I found it at the Macon Rescue Mission on Napier. Do you remember the first record you ever bought? The first record I ever bought was for 50 cents, from the Washington Library. The Wailers – Burnin’. I think I was like 14. I remember reading the lyrics to the songs I’d always heard growing up and I was like, ‘Wow, this is some serious stuff!’
What would you be doing if you weren’t DJing, do you think? I would be using my 2 degrees I earned from Macon State and Middle Georgia State University in Healthcare Service Administration and Information Technology. I tried to get a solid 9-5 right out of college in 2015, but I’m really bad at interviews, I think. What are some of your favorite things to play right now? What gets a great crowd response? I love to seek out local Macon music from artists here in our city, or amazing remixes of popular songs, or just music that makes you feel it in your soul. To get a crowd response – well, it depends on the crowd. The 3 go-to artists in my opinion are Drake, Young Thug and Flo Rida. Any good funny stories about people and their requests for music? The times I was doing 80s for the Ladies at the Tractor Room, there were always crazy requests. The crowd was in the age range of 19-55+, so I always had to be prepared! But the one time I wasn’t was when this Mexican family came in to party, and I ended up playing Cumbia and Merengue all night. It was awesome. What are you listening to lately? My ear has been more in tune to these Macon and Warner Robins artists. These people are crazy talented. I can’t list em all right now, but I’d love to work with them. My top picks for right now are Brudda Haiti and Hindsight.

What Tilford Winery and Farms Where Kathleen, Georgia By Ryan Smith
Robert drawls out in thick Mississippian, “I enjoy working in the garden because I love the soil. It’s the soil I grew up with.” For Robert Taylor, owner and operator of Tilford Farms and Vineyard, farming isn’t just a way of life, it’s what gave him back his own.
Robert Taylor Cultivating From an Enriched Soul I’ve just set foot in Kathleen, GA on site at Tilford Winery and Farms alongside my colleague, Professor Doctor Ryan Jennings of Mercer University’s Biology Program, to find the man we’ve come to meet quietly excavating a small handful of earth from his estate. As he carefully sifts the soil through the seams of his fingers he looks out over his labor of love and drawls out in thick Mississippian, “I enjoy working in the garden because I love the soil. It’s the soil I grew up with.” For Robert Taylor, owner and operator of the very ground we’re standing on, farming isn’t just a way of life, it’s what gave him back his own. Before Robert became the only African American to own and operate a winery in Georgia, he worked full time as an aircraft technician on Robins Air Force Base. After retiring in 1983, Robert first broke ground on his estate with the intention of finding a hobby that would keep him busy following his career. However, with Robert, farming isn’t just a flippant passing of time. On his 40 acres of farmland Mr. Taylor facilitates the growth of produce as he says, “from A to Z”. That’s Asparagus to Zucchini and everything in between. Although this started as a retirement plan for Mr. Taylor, it’s safe to say that horticulture is in his blood. In fact, the estate bears his father’s name, Tilford, as it was he who first planted in Robert an appreciation for the soil on a small farm in Utica, MS where he grew up. It was there where Robert first learned of the versatility of the Muscadine grape, as his mother was known to turn their crop into jams and pies while his grandmother vinted a portion of it to make wine. 14 JUNE 30 - JULY 13, 2016
Even though he was raised with his hands in the soil, Robert saw his start in the wider farming community as a young man studying and steering cattle within the local Future Farmers of America chapter near his home. He didn’t much care for the cattle though, as according to him the old adage holds true that it was a nuisance to try to get them to come home at all. It follows that he prefers and first got interested in getting back to his roots in horticulture as “it deals with plant life which is inherently stationary and much less likely to wander off.” While he finally did get back to reaping what he sowed after his retirement, the fermentation of his Muscadine crop into wine had not even been a twinkle in Robert’s eye until he was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1999. Unlike his crops, Mr. Taylor is not one for standing still. Thus, during the next 15 months of his life that he was unable to work, he sought out and began exploring the health giving properties of resveratrol, a compound found in his family friend and super fruit, the Muscadine. Muscadine grapes, their juice, and their ferment is widely used as a nutraceutical, which is a food or naturally occurring food supplement thought to prevent disease or have other beneficial effects on human health. Now cancer free, Robert raises three different varietals of Muscadine, two white and one red, to create 200 cases of wine a year. In deference to most of the Muscadine wine producing market, Robert models his winery after that of the great wines of the world in that he uses a single type of grape to form a single issue wine; much like Chardon-
nay or Cabernet Sauvignon. This type of approach is not just unique in process; it is also unique in yield. His end results are a great deal more palatable than the overtly sweet wine that the Muscadine varietals are commonly associated with. Therefore the wines currently offered from Tilford Winery are named for the species of grapes nestled upon his trellises: Carlos, Magnolia, Noble, and a Noble Rosé, which is also made the classic way by allowing the skins of the red grape to be in contact with the wine for only a few days during the fermentation before being removed. Following in his father’s footsteps, Robert has made Tilford Winery a family affair. Relatives volunteer their time to help harvest all crops, including the grapes, as well as assist in producing the wine. Additionally, his son LeQuintiss Taylor handles the sales and marketing of the winery. In addition to his efforts in his vineyard, Mr. Taylor is active in the WIC program which helps provide for Women, Infants, and Children who are at a nutritional risk. By virtue of his relentless dedication to his trade and his family values, Tilford Winery and Farms was awarded Fort Valley State University’s 2015 Farm Family of the Year. If you would like a tour, purchase Robert’s wine, or learn more about Tilford Winery and Farms; visit them at their website https://tilfordwinery.com/ or their Facebook page.

As I write this on the eve of my son’s second birthday, there have been plenty of places as a first-time parent where I second-guess just about everything. These days I pretty much live by the check boxes of not enough, too much or just right. Even music falls into those categories. Is he being exposed to enough music? Is the music too loud and too much? Then I see him bobbing his head to a random tune. I hear his little lungs belt out the lyrics of his favorite songs. I’ve had to drag him off a local stage because he was so enamored with the live band. I’ve watched him frantically point to a picture and shout “Otis!” And it’s then that I may say, well, maybe, we’ve got this just right. He and I do a darn cute duet to Otis Reddings’ “Fa-FaFa-Fa-Fa” song. He was there in my arms when Clarence Carter sang “Patches” (my all-time favorite song) live at Second Sunday. He knows Dolly Parton by song and sight. And I’ve lulled him to sleep a few times with my own lullaby renditions of Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and the Eagles’ “Desperado.” Not to mention, he has a few Rock Candy Tours under his stroller’s belt. Walden won’t be alone with music. He’s growing up with his own peer group of local offspring who come from families who value the good tunes of our past, present and future. I have to think if we keep raising them right by
exposing them to live local music and the songs that mean something to us, our kids will later understand why this town matters so very much to us. Music plays a huge role in that. Just the other week, Macon’s latest little rock star was born to local musicians Shawn and Lacey Williamson. Arya Lane Williamson arrived just in time for a steamy summer of Second Sundays, her first Bragg Jam baby-sitter and Otis Redding’s 75th birthday celebration in September. Our kids may be a couple of years apart, but I bet it won’t make much difference when the days come that we go to shows at our local venues AND our backyard garages. As many know, I was exposed to live music at an early age. So early that one of my first memories was of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang taking over the backstage of NYC’s Beacon Theatre when I was somewhere around my son’s age. As unconventional as my upbringing was, I can safely now say that it only made my soundtrack all the more interesting. I’ll be sharing a few of these memories and more, as well as seeking out others raised by families with significant music ties, on a new radio show called “Love Child of Rock” on Macon’s Creek 100.9 FM. The station is coowned by the same publisher of this paper and will arrive to airways in early July. Stay tuned for this and more as Macon makes airwaves again!
Rock Candy Tours is a music history tour company that showcases the legacy of Macon, Georgia’s rich music history. Jessica Walden and Jamie Weatherford founded the company in June 2011 in response to the closure of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. These are the stories that music was made of! RUTH SYKES Director of Media Relations, Laurie Rowe Communications 1. Must Eat The Bibimbap at Chico and Chang’s, on Riverside where Shoki used to be. It’s a rice bowl topped with a mix of seasoned vegetables, flavorful sauce and a fried egg; my favorite new discovery, in an independent Korean and Mexican fusion restaurant, owned by a very cool local couple. 2. Must Do Invest in local art. With galleries and museums scattered throughout the city, there’s something for every taste and budget, from painting to sculpture to photography. You can even create your own masterpiece at gallery events like The 567’s Corks & Canvas. 3. Must See Live music in a local venue. 4. Must Go On a Friday night or Saturday morning urban hike to explore Macon’s music heritage and so much more with Rock Candy Tours. Even if you think you know it all, you’ll learn something new about the amazing role Macon has played in the world’s musical landscape over the years.

1. Must Eat Pietro’s. Being from Savannah, I need seafood in my life and Pietro’s has it straight from Brunswick. 2. Must Do Bragg Jam’s Second Sunday Concert Series. You can’t do much better than a free outdoor show and an amazing view of Macon. 3. Must See SparkMacon, of course. The makerspace has art and tech tools for the entire community, including 3D printers! 4. Must Go Historic Riverside Cemetery. The place is beautiful and was designed to be a community gathering space by Calvert Vaux, who was also the landscape architect for Central Park. 5. Living in Macon is... an amazing opportunity to make an impact on your life and the community. This city has opportunities for talent to make a name doing what they love.

The Crazy Bull
What is your favorite cocktail?
I’m simple, I like whiskey, straight-up.
Least Favorite Drink to Make?
It’s called a “Reason to Live” and it’s definitely not simple; Vodka, Malibu, SoCo, melon, blue curaçao, peach schnapps, orange juice, pineapple juice, and a splash of sour!
Do’s & Don’ts at The Bar?
Do: have your order and money ready, Don’t: yell or snap at me. I’ve been bartending for nine years now, and I love it because it provides me with a certain lifestyle I enjoy.
Favorite meal at a local restaurant?
The Osso Bucco at Tic Toc Room is my absolute favorite.
What would you like to see more of in Macon?
I like how I can walk to everything downtown. I don’t like the traffic... I’m a terrible driver (sorry Macon).

Praised by Rolling Stone as “at once quirky, trippy, soulful and downright magnetic,” it’s the band’s third long-playing album for Silver Arrow Records. Tickets for this show will sell out! Robinson (formerly of The Black Crowes) declares: “We’ve created a piece of rock ‘n’ roll here. People can look to us and rest assured the genre is alive and well.” In an age when so many put their beliefs in trends, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood is committed to something deeper. In Robinson’s words: “We don’t make music that can sell iPads. Our music will not sell you a Prius. I like that. Writing songs has always led me to good things in my life. The songwriting saved me through the dark times, and the songwriting makes it that much sweeter when it’s good. Real success can only come in pursuit of an authentic sound. We’re all very committed to this music, beyond money and egos. That’s a unique place to be.”
