The story is just getting started.

A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. The money will help The 11th Hour continue to offer great content, and calendars and reviews to our readers for years to come. So purchase your membership today and continue to read Teddy Bear. Thur, June 2 Sabrina Fair Presented by Theatre Macon - Thru June 4. One of the great romantic comedies of the American stage and screen, this is the play that inspired two wonderful films; one with Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart and one with Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford. But, as the saying goes, it’s always better on stage in a beautiful live performance. Vying for the love of the young Larrabee heirs, Sabrina upsets the “social apple cart “, and her chauffer father has a surprise or two of his own. This is a not to be missed evening of theatre at it’s best. Admission Info: $25 for adults, $15 for students. 478-746-9485

Fri, June 3 Blues For An Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage Presented by Douglass Theatre - June 3 - June 5, Angel Allen is a down-and-out back-up singer and the recent ex-girlfriend of an Italian-American gangster. She has lost her job at the Cotton Club and is drowning her bad luck in booze. Once again, she must depend upon her roommate, Guy Jacobs, for support. Guy is a brilliant, flamboyant, homosexual costume designer (also fired from the Cotton Club) who dreams of sailing off to Paris to design clothes for the internationally renown black, singer/actress, Josephine Baker. Across the hall lives Delia Patterson, a dedicated young social worker. Into the mix comes Leland Cunningham, a naïve young man who has just moved to notorious Harlem from a small town in Alabama following the death of his wife and unborn child. He is a hard-working, Godfearing Christian who is appalled at the libertarian lifestyles he finds in Harlem, that is, until he meets and is smitten with Angel. Filled with humor, love, hope, fear and survival, the play deals with personal and social issues. Though the play takes place in 1930s Harlem, there is a sense of the present conflicts taking place. Cleage’s five characters include winners, losers and users who all have their dreams in the difficult time called The Great Depression. Admission Info: $15 Advance, $20 At the Door. Family Fun Georgia Peach Festival June 3-4 Fort Valley and Byron, Georgia The Georgia Peach Festival honors peach growers for their contribution to our state’s economy and to the food industry nationwide. The annual week-long Festival attracts as many as 10,000 visitors including church groups, senior groups and charter bus tours. The Georgia Peach Festival splits events between Peach County’s two cities, Byron and Fort Valley, each June. Georgia peaches have a long and storied tradition and Peach County is the epicenter of this fabled industry. The first peaches were planted in the state in the 18th century, and the first commercial production occurred in the mid-19th century. Georgia ranks third in the nation in the annual production of peaches, with more than 15,000 acres of peach trees yielding more than 1.7 million bushels of peaches annually. More than half of that harvest is cultivated in Peach County alone. Georgia peaches are arguably the sweetest and tastiest grown anywhere in the world. June 3 opens in Fort Valley’s Festival Park at noon Featuring rides, inflatables, food and fun. June 4 will kick off with a parade thru downtown Fort Valley featuring Miss America Betty Cantrell. A “Beach Party” themed celebration at 7 p.m., fireworks at 9:45.

THE HUMMINGBIRD 11 Facts About The Bird’s 11th Anniversary by Traci Burns

1

Hummingbird owner Tim Obelgoner hails from Texas and worked as an Instrumentation & Control Engineer before finally landing in Georgia and reaching his true calling as owner of this beloved downtown establishment, which is celebrating its 11th anniversary this month.

2. The Hummingbird Stage & Taproom gets its name from an iconic, beautiful Gibson guitar that was made famous by such musicians as Keith Richards and Gram Parsons. 3. Out of the hundreds of acts that have played the Hummingbird in the past eleven years, some of Obelgoner’s favorites include Billy Joe Shaver, Justin Townes Earle, and James McMurtry. 4. When asked about his ‘dream show’ – who he’d most like to see play at the Bird in the future - Obelgoner’s answer comes quickly: “I’d love to see Unknown Hinson with his full stage show again, but he got busy with Squidbillies and hasn’t been touring like that as much.” After a pause, he continues, “Oh, and Blackberry Smoke! They played here a few years ago before they blew up and got real big. We’d love to have them back, too.” 5. Some of the most popular cocktails at the Hummingbird include the Vegas Bomb, a Crown Royal/peach schnapps/cranberry juice/Red Bull concoction, and the Jenny Hendrix, a refreshing gin lemonade perfect for summertime. 6. The Bird maintains its status as a middle Georgia favorite by continually innovating and being creative – they aren’t just about

drinks, music, and darts (although they are great at those things), they also keep it fresh by hosting events like last month’s enthusiastically attended Adult Prom, a Great Gatsby-themed party that allowed grownups to recapture the magic of being a drunk teenager in a fancy outfit, complete with lead-out, Prom King & Queen, and a midnight balloon drop. Next month brings the return of Swipe Right Night, a speed dating event, on July 26. 7. Speaking of creative and fun, for the past several years the Hummingbird has hosted their own take on a competitive athletic event – the Hummingbird 5x. This event requires that you be able to chug an Irish Car Bomb and run around the block. If you can do this five times without puking, you win! Way, way better than a mud run or inflatable obstacle course. 8. One of the best things about being a bar owner, according to Obelgoner, is the opportunity to be involved locally in a multifaceted way. “We’re blessed to be involved in community affairs,” he says, “from sponsoring rollerderby, softball, and rugby teams to running a successful blanket drive for the homeless several years in a row. . . hosting the Cherry Blossom Music Festival showcase. . . the Big Bird Bash. . . the 5x. . . sponsoring a car for the Soapbox Derby. . .” his voice trails off as he continues listing various aspects

of the bar’s community involvement, obviously proud to be able to give back in whatever way he can. 9. The bar has recently had a new air conditioner and ventilation system installed – just in time for summer! – so Obelgoner is hoping that will mitigate any complaints about the bar interior’s sometimes-smoky nature. If the smoke is still too much for you, the back patio is always open and hoppin’, though. 10. When asked what he’s looking forward to in the Hummingbird’s future, Obelgoner answered, “We serve a broad segment of the market, and we want to continue to do that, to be the place where everybody wants to come hang out and check out the cool drink specials, good live music, fun events. We book around 125 shows every year, and we definitely intend to keep bringing good live music to the community.” 11. The Bird’s 11th Anniversary Celebration: On Saturday, June 4, for only $10 you can hang out at the Bird from 5 pm til 2 am, enjoying adult snow cones, a dunking booth, door prizes, delicious food from Outlaw BBQ, and awesome music from six bands – The Matt Brantley Band, African Americana, Tyler Porch Band, Analog Existence, Mopeland, and Driven Towards Chaos.

Native Macon, GA Occupation Stylist and Esthetician at Amanda Jane Salon

11 Random Facts about Amber: 1. I used to be a Drum and Bass DJ in Valdosta. 2. Pat Benatar looks like me; not the other way around 3. Palazzo pants are popular because I wore my pjs to Burt Reynolds and Amber

Kroger one day. 4. I love sitting outside during intense lightning storms 5. I wear black 24/7, and pleather is never out. 6. If you’re talking to me, I’m usually thinking about doing your hair. 7. Nag Champa is pretty much my religion. (Not really) but I probably burn enough for a temple in Dubai. 8. I have an intense collection of Buddhas. 9. I love the HAWKS 10. I can take anyone on in a Soul Calibur tournament. (yes I will win...every time) 11. I don’t wear eyeshadow on Sunday’s.

You’re a master stylist, skin care specialist and makeup artist at Amanda Jane. What sort of special training have you had for your chosen profession? I have training from Central Georgia Technical College where I completed the Medical Skin Care Specialist Program and their Esthetics Program. I completed my Training for Master Cosmetology at Amanda Jane Salon. I also have training through AVEDA, ORIBE and R+Co. I hear you have worked with several celebrities over the years. Tell us who? Ok, my favorite story to tell is about the legend himself- Burt Reynolds; who might I add is one of the most genuine southern gentlemen I have ever met in my life. We had worked our tails off and I had the pleasure of having dinner with him and a few of his close friends. I rode with him and his assistant to dinner and when we got back to my car Burt said he would walk me to my car and I told him he didn’t have to do that at all, he said to me “I know I don’t have to, but I’m going to.” So I let him walk me to my car. He held my hand and escorted me to my car, gave me a kiss on the cheek and told me he would see me tomorrow for work. I thought I was going to die right there! Walking through the parking lot all I could think was “Burt Reynolds is holding my hand and walking me to my car. BURT REYNOLDS!!” What is the culture like at Amanda Jane?

The dynamics of Amanda Jane are like no other salon I have ever seen. Our “Culture” I would describe as freedom. We are all different and we all have the freedom to be just as we are as artist. We are like a big family, which is extremely hard to come by in a salon environment, but I also think that is what sets us apart from other salons around. We help each other grow and listen to each other’s ideas and we take it into our own accountability. I wouldn’t be half as strong of an artist if it weren’t for my AJ family. What do you think you are most know for? I like to believe people come to me for my talent and my personality. I am probably mostly known for my honesty with my clients. Everyone is different and just because you want a certain look doesn’t mean that particular look is right for you. I like to give my clients what they want but in a way it is solely theirs and not generic. If we were all meant to have Jennifer Aniston hair, we would all have it. I wish I had her hair, but fortunately I have short purple hair. Clearly you are a creative person. What were you like as a kid? Me as kid, for the most part I was a very shy and quiet, but growing up with two younger brothers we were always into something. I always said I wanted to be an artist or a teacher, I like to think I became both. Being an artist in my craft and teaching people about how to

take care of their skin and hair and what things to use in doing so. When you are not working, what do you do for fun? I love to travel, especially for hair shows, there isn’t anything like being around thousands of other people who share a specific world of art and passion same as you. Beyond that, you will find me anywhere that has good music, good food, and friends. I love supporting all of our amazing businesses downtown. What do you like most about Macon? I love the passion that Macon has as a whole. There can be as much crime as you want to believe is here, but the hearts of the people that live here and that are from here will always conquer any negativity. I believe we have music to thank for all the heart and soul we have here in Macon, it’s what keeps us going and thriving. What are your plans for the future? My ultimate goals are to continue to grow my celeb clientele and travel, but also continue growing as an artist. Amanda Jane will always be a part of my career and I’m extremely blessed to be there. I love making people feel good about themselves. By Nicole Thurston

The Scene

Some say there is a curse on Macon. It is told that when the Creek Nation was relocated to “Indian Territory” in 1830, they put a curse on the land. It is said that those who settle along the banks of the Ocmulgee River would never leave the area. Or maybe… it was that they would never want to leave. If you have not spent at least one afternoon floating, biking, kayaking, or picnicking along the river, you don’t know what you have been missing. Described as the best kept secret in outdoor adventure in Georgia, the Ocmulgee River is experiencing a renaissance. Once a major thoroughfare for cotton and other agricultural exports, it is now a favorite spot for outdoor enthusiasts. This beautiful, winding river rises at a point in north central Georgia southeast of Atlanta and winds its way through three sub basins: the Upper Ocmulgee, the Lower Ocmulgee River, and the Little Ocmulgee River. The name of the river may have come from the Hitchiti words oki (“water”) plus molki (“bubbling” or “boiling”,) possibly meaning “where the water boils up.” Recently, Maconites have flocked to Amerson Park to check out the renovations the city pulled together. According to Steve Lawson, Director of Macon-Bibb Parks & Beautification, the park offers tons of afternoon activities for the adventure seeking family. “For people that can buy their own floats and want to come to Amerson, they can put in at our north boat ramp and have a two-hour float to the south ramp, or a four-hour float to the boat ramp at Spring Street. Along the river there are several sandbars that kids can play on or that people can take a break from floating and go swimming. We have a RFP out now for a Concessionaire Program that will be offering floats and bikes for rent at the park and bus rides back to any of the ramps. We hope to have a company picked for that by the end of June.” Middle Georgia has a couple of options available if you need to rent a canoe or kayak. Mid GA Ocmulgee Outfitters, LLC offers kayak and tube rentals, sales of kayaks & tubes, and shuttle rides for people with their own equipment on 42 miles of the Ocmulgee River from Loyd Shoals (at Jackson Lake) to Spring street (in Macon) with 16 different drop offs and pickups along the way. They are open 7 days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Their shuttle prices start at $15.00 and go up to $35.00, tubes-$15.00, Single Kayaks start at $45.00 and go up to $95.00. Double kayaks start at $60.00 and go up to $115.00. S.U.P.s start

at $60.00 and go up to $115.00. Mid Georgia Ocmulgee Outfitters are located at 5500 Juliette Road in Juliette, GA. With so much to see and do in our own backyard, experiencing an adventure on the Ocmulgee seems to be a simple, cost-saving, mega-memory making experience. “I recommend that you give yourself the gift of getting out there and enjoying the river,” explains Kathleen O’Neal, owner of Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions, LLC. “Go early in the season when the water levels are higher and do the Half Day Float, which has some Class 1 rapids. They’re more fun when the river is up. Organize a party with your friends and do the Quick Float as a group, which only takes about 3 hours total. Life is more fun when you have more memories.” Her company offers another alternative when choosing your next backyard adventure. OOE rents kayaks and canoes for two trips along the Ocmulgee. Each kayak or canoe comes with a life jacket, the appropriate paddle, a shuttle to the put in point, instructions on steering the boat, a safety talk, and a rousing cheer as you take off on your journey. When the paddler arrives at the take out point, OOE is there to collect the boat and the gear and offer a snack of lemonade and cookies. The shorter trip is called the Quick Float and it is four miles long and takes two to two and a half hours and is suitable for all skill levels because there are no rapids. The longer trip is called the Half Day Float and is nine miles and includes some Class 1 (the easiest; think big ripples and small waves) rapids. It lasts four to six hours depending upon the water level. They will also shuttle private boats to either Popes Ferry or Amerson River Park and the price is per person accompanying the boat, as well as renting inner tubes for those who want

Your itinerary: 11:00 am The adventure begins at Macon Beer Company. Park your car and board the Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions shuttle bus for a short ride to Amerson River Park. You’ll be set up with your canoe or kayak, life jacket, paddle, and some paddling instruction. 11:45 am Your float begins as you paddle down the calm waters of the river, winding through the woods, and past Rose Hill Cemetery. 2:00 pm You’ll take your boat out at the ramp along the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail (aka the River

to tube the river. Each tube comes with a life jacket and shuttle is possible by arrangement. They are open 7 days a week. On the weekends, there are set times for the trips, but on the weekdays there is more flexibility. The Half Day Tour begins early in the morning on Saturdays and Sundays and is offered once each day, while the Quick Float starts later in the day and there will be either two or three opportunities to jump on a Quick Float on the weekends. All trips are by reservation, so call early. You have a much better chance of getting the trip length, the trip time, and the style of boat you want if you call at least four days in advance. Also, weekday trips are by arrangement so they need at least two, but better to have three days, notice. The Quick Float is $35 per person on the weekend and $30 on a weekday. The Half Day Float is $50 per person on the weekend and $45 on a weekday. Groups of 10 or more get a 15% discount and there is a 10% discount for college students, military, or those 60 and over. The shuttling of private boats is actually per person, so the cost is $10 from the Riverwalk to Amerson and $15 from Amerson to Popes Ferry. Inner tube rentals are $10 per tube with a $10 deposit. Each tube comes with a life jacket. “The Ocmulgee is Macon’s backyard and over and over I hear first time paddlers say “Wow, I never realized it’s so beautiful!” explained O’Neal, “It’s so close, parts of it are in downtown Macon, but the urban feeling disappears. You’re outside in nature and it’s pretty. Doesn’t matter if the sun is shining or it’s a cloudy day. The experience of being “out there,” away from the crowds, especially on a weekday or the Half Day Float, can’t be found in downtown Macon. Downtown has its own joys and beauty, but it’s urban beauty. Being on the river changes your rhythm. Your blood pressure drops, you relax as you drift down the river and you take a big breath and release stress and feel the water on your hands as you trail them in the river and you realize that you’ve been given a gift of peace and joy and all it took was getting in a boat and getting on the Ocmulgee.” All the more reason to choose the Ocmulgee as your next destination. So what if you want to stay a little longer or come back for another visit? You can blame in on the curse. ;-)

Walk) in downtown Macon. Everyone will board the bus and shuttle back to the Macon Beer Company. 2:30 pm Enjoy a sack lunch out on our patio and let the beer tasting begin. Six tasting tickets are included, and each ticket is redeemable for a 6-oz. pour of your beer of choice. 3:00 pm We’ll give you a tour of the brewery and tell you all about how our brews are created. After that, you’re welcome to stay and taste our beers until the tasting room closes at 6:00!

You may choose a kayak or a canoe. Kayaks only hold one person, and the cost is $60 per kayak for everything listed above (kayak rental, shuttle service, tour, lunch, beer tasting & souvenir pint glass). Canoes hold two people and are $120 per canoe, which includes everything mentioned above for two people. Space is limited for this experience and the first Boat & Beer Float sold out, so make your reservations only. Call 478733-3386 or visit the Facebook event page for more details.

OP-ED

...Insert yanked vinyl record screech. Somebody call Kanye and have him interrupt this Muscle Shoal moment. I mean, let him finish, let him finish and all, but dang y’all . . . let’s remind him he’s in Macon, Georgia?

Parden Me While I Pull a Kanye By Jessica Walden Earlier this month at the Macon City Auditorium, Merle Haggard was supposed to be there. But fate had different plans. The Okie From Muskogee went home to the great big all-star band in the sky. So, just as the way love goes, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit moved from opening act to concert headliner. Yet, the seats of the Macon City Auditorium stayed full. After all, who doesn’t love some Jason Isbell? The last time he was here in Macon, he played a soldout Cox Capitol Theatre. He goes as far back as 550 Blues and more recent enough to know his way around the back of the Hummingbird. He’s played one of the coldest nights I could ever remember at the Fly South Festival, and he’s played the sweatiest time of year at Bragg Jam more times than you can count. He’s been a Trucker, a fighter, one hell of a songwriter, a lover, a sober driver and now a new father, GRAMMY winner and well-deserving headliner. It only made sense that the Big House Foundation handed him Duane Allman’s sacred Gibson Les Paul Goldtop guitar to play on stage, as they do when truly special musicians come into town. The audience collectively awwed and whooped, three-cheering and anxious to sing along. After all, we had been for the entire show – the entire career – and Isbell and his band are no doubt at their personal best. And we can’t help but think Macon is somewhere in that story. Isbell lovingly looked down at the guitar and paid his respects. He started the story in the parking lot outside Muscle Shoals’ famed Fame Studio. There was this eager, anxious, gangly guitar player who just wanted to play on everything . . . and then Rick Hall and Jerry Wexler said 16 JUNE 1 - 15, 2016

“put a band together” and . . . Insert yanked vinyl record screech. Somebody call Kanye and have him interrupt this Muscle Shoal moment. I mean, let him finish, let him finish and all, but dang y’all . . . let’s remind him he’s in Macon, Georgia? Jason finished his story, humbly accepted that guitar and played it in a way that would make Duane proud. And we still sang along. And we still cheered and clapped and felt like proud cohorts. But my heart sank a little that Macon was never even mentioned. Sure, there’s that Muscle Shoals sound, but there’s another city to its story. Maybe I am just a little sensitive since it was the Macon City Auditorium, but can I get an Amen that it’s OUR city’s cast of characters that make the Allman Brothers, the Big House and that guitar so much more special? After all, you’re on the very stage where Sister Rosetta Tharpe was playing the devil out of her guitar in the name of the Lord and a little boy Little Richard looked at her so eagerly and so longingly that she yanked him up there with her – and rock n’ roll was born. It was at the Macon City Auditorium that James Brown scuffed his knees from falling down and pleading “Please, Please, Please” before getting on up again. It was there that Otis had all his homecomings, including his final one, far too young. It’s that very spot and with those same notes wept from that guitar that the Allman Brothers have played for decades now. I don’t fault Jason Isbell in this slight slip of history. I fault the past, present and future. If we’re not telling our story, then no one is really listening. In fact, with successful documentaries of other cities, high tourism demand as a result, and many of our legendary players deceased, I can’t help but notice Macon is being written out a lot

of the good chapters. And even though the gospels of Muscle Shoals and Memphis are pretty dang good, they wouldn’t be near as exciting without the disciples who lived among us in our fair city. So, may the big shows keep coming. But may we remind them why they’re here. May the artists keep growing. But may we remind them where they came from. May the guitar be passed. But may we remind them why it still matters. And may we start reminding one another, always, that Macon – me, you, us – is the other side of that story.

AFRICAN AMERICANA African Americana has been making noise in Macon for the last couple of years, bringing home the award for Best Experimental Band at the 2016 11th Hour Readers’ Choice Awards. We sent the guys a few questions about their music, their upbringing and their thoughts on the Local Music Scene.

Tell me about the first time you remember playing music. Slim Tommy Superior: Piano with my mother, at a early age. Music filled the halls on a daily basis. Alex & Her Wrath: I don’t What was the first song you ever really got into? Tommy: I will die 4 U - Prince. A sounds very cliche, Prince has always been a major influence from a young age. Public Enemy, fight the power Alex: Super Saiyan Trunks by Lil Uzi Vert, definitely. Were your parents supportive of you playing music? Tommy: Mom worked at Sony. Dad worked at MTV before opening an art gallery in Brooklyn. I was always around music Alex: Same, artist parents. Who are some of your favorite local bands? Tommy: Taped Fist, Bob Lennon, Good Night Alive Alex: Robert Lee Coleman, Jowin, Cody Avant. What’s important when it comes to growing our local music scene? Tommy: Artist need to put their ego’s & pride to the side and support the best of the local artists. So in turn they can make enough noise on a global scale that they can

make a name for the town and that will bring attention to all the artist regionally as a whole. U-N-I-T-Y Alex: There are a lot of good artist here, innovative sounds. It gets lost in the sauce. A venue might not play a specific genre, rap, or Argentinian House, or like some UK grime on the regular. So a local act in the respective genre has a harder time looking for stage locally. A lot of local bands won’t get booked based on talent alone, they will have to play a lot shows, everywhere, good shows, bad shows...a band with an unfamiliar sound will have work twice as hard than the mediocre band with the usual flair. Market yourselves. Social media is your scene now. What’s being done right? Wrong? Tommy: The people that come and show support, buy merch, you’re doing it right. Alex: Ironically bad flyers and playing free shows in 2016 is pretty absurd. Local or not. If you know your music is good, have some self respect. Someone might actually buy into your bullshit What’s next for African Americana? Tommy: Releasing or debut LP, Mother and Safehaus, The Ballad of4 Slim Tommy. Smoking hella joints. Alex: Coliseum with Cody Avant is on the way. Experiment with different sounds and see where it takes us. Not succumbing to complacency.

Owner, The Bourbon Bar

Do talk to other people. I’m not saying jump into private conversations and share your life story but I see a lot of people who keep to themselves or their small groups. Odds are you already know these people so how about making some new friends. DON’T drink and drive. There has never been any excuse for doing so but even less of a reason now that we have Uber. . What do you like to do when you aren’t at the Bourbon Bar? I wish I could say something cool like rock climbing or skydiving but to be truthful I watch a lot of television. I seriously keep up with about 40 or 50 shows. What would you like to see more of at the Bourbon Bar? The same thing I want to see all over downtown. More people from Macon. We get people from all over that live downtown or are just visiting, and while that’s great, we need more people from other parts of town supporting downtown as well.

Robert Lee Coleman & The Night Owls THE HUMMINGBIRD Robert Lee Coleman & The Night Owls are a blues trio made up of guitarist/vocalist/ songwriter Benjamin Cummings, bassist Joseph Palmer, and drummer/vocalist Jarvis Arline.
