FOR THE LOVE OF CAKE
Amanda Rocafort, owner of Amanda’s Cakery, announced last week that her Cotton Avenue storefront would no longer be open to the public, but that her cakes would still be available for custom order. Baking since 2005, Rocafort said, “Unfortunately, as of April 3, one will no longer be able to stop in for baked goods we sold in our storefront; cookies, cake slices, cupcakes, and cake trimmings. This is only temporary until my husband and I are stateside together.” Rocafort and her husband Will met at her cakery in 2013. “He lived a block up, the cakery was on his running route. He bought cupcakes for a year before leaving his number,” she said. The Monday after the couple were married, her husband left for his station in Germany, serving the United States Air Force. After maintaining an agonizing two-years over 4,400 miles apart, Rocafort decided to make the aforementioned announcement. Amanda’s Cakes will continue on, Amanda herself will be crossing the Atlantic several times a year and employing very talented, capable bakers in her absence. Their commitment in Germany will end in February 2018, and the couple hope to return to Robins Air Force Band, and reopen the storefront that brought them together. “We are still baking our hearts out and taking all your custom cake order needs.” Cake tastings and bridal consults are also still available by appointment at the Cotton Avenue location. So for the love of cake, Amanda’s Cakery can be reached by calling (478) 738-9504.
JC PENNEY CLOSING AT OLD MALL
JC Penney announced they will be closing three stores in Central Georgia; in Macon, Milledgeville and Dublin. “About 5,000 positions nationwide will be impacted by the store closures, most of which will occur in June,” said a release by the company. “Most affected stores will begin the liquidation process on April 17.” The Warner Robins location at the Galleria Mall will remain open.

You’re So Macon if...
you want to punch someone, and set them on f1re every time they use Macon as a pun for Makin’. -Courtney Wilkins
pub notes I started The 11th Hour fifteen years ago this month with my beautiful wife Meagan. We didn’t have any money - we sold every ad it took to print the first edition ourselves, and we haven’t looked back. It certainly hasn’t been easy. There have been years of struggle, and there have been times when it was all going pretty good. But this year, things are better than they ever have been. We’ve teamed up with some great people and created a real community-driven radio station 100.9, The Creek. I guess you can call The 11th Hour and The Creek sisters. They share pretty much everything. Our team is a close one – we’re a family. We have fun, we work harder than anyone I know, and we create some pretty cool shit, if I do say so myself. But all that was put in danger this past weekend, when Lowell Register (>) broke into our radio tower and tried to take us off the air during one of the busiest times of the year. This could have cost us a lot of money. Taking us off the air during Cherry Blossom would have really slowed our momentum. But instead, it brought us all closer together, didn’t it? Our team and you - our listeners. When the sound turned to static, I think we all realized how important we really are to our community. The effort that went into getting us back on the air and getting the culprit arrested was nothing less than miraculous. I got hundreds of texts, and hundreds more phone calls and emails of support. Thank you for every one of them. A few important facts: the sale of the station was approved by a judge months ago. We live by what the judge says. That’s it. We don’t owe anyone rent. That would require some kind of written lease. I can’t just go up to some dude on the street and say they are standing on my land and that they owe me rent. That’s not how things work. The equipment stolen by Mr. Register was never owned by Mr. Register. When we bought the station, we replaced around 90% of the equipment that we got in the sale because it was outdated and just didn’t work right. I don’t know what Mr. Register’s motives are. I don’t think he’s crazy. He was smart enough to know just how to take us off the air, I know that much. And we were clever enough to outsmart him and land him in jail. I know that too. So what’s next? We’re going to keep sounding like our city. That’s what we’re going to do. Thank you for sticking with us, even through the static. - Brad Evans
“What started out as a crazy idea concocted on a front porch has grown into an event that brings together a gloriously eclectic group of people from the community at large to celebrate feats of speed, science, creativity, and community. In short, it’s pretty rad and if you’ve never made it. You should fix that. Pronto,” said Chris Nylund, Race Co- Chair. “The word “pronto” isn’t used enough. We should fix that too.”

15th ANNIVERSARY
An Interview with
GARY BUSEY Leon Russell was coming to town. We found out that Gary Busey used to be his drummer, and thought it would be a good excuse to request an interview. They said yes. We knew it was going to be good. It was hilarious and quite magical, at times. I consider it the best interview we’ve ever done, but that was not our fault. Just read this, you’ll see what I’m talking about. –Brad Evans, publisher
He’s been the star of movies and reality TV. He is as intense an individual as I’ve ever encountered, and the interview was every bit as fulfilling as it was unexpected and unpredictable. At the close of our conversation, Mr. Busey specifically asked that we protect the integrity of this interview, not trimming it too much. In the transcription process, we agreed. We had to keep this as intact as possible, even though space restrictions require releasing the interview in two parts. We don’t think you’ll mind too much. As you’ll find, he is blunt, honest and occasionally, really deep. As he himself said, “This is the Truth of Gary Busey speaking.” And you all deserve a chance to experience it. At the start of your career, you were a musician, a drummer. How’d you get into that and do you still play? My career started at birth. Entertaining others was easy for me because that is who I am and who I’ve been and what I continue to be. The first set of drums I had was three round containers of Quaker Oats, three different-sized coffee cans, three sizes of glasses, and one bell. This was when I was in the fifth and sixth grade. I would get up early in the morning
and set up my drum set, get six carpenter pencils—the thick ones—and play my drum set so hard and loud that my Mother would run out of the bedroom and kick my drum set apart and tell me to “stop playing those damn drums!” And the beautiful thing about my mother’s reaction (is it) motivated and inspired me to get the biggest drum set you could find, set it up in the living room, and show her the difference in volume between Quaker Oats boxes and Ludwig drums. You’ve had a long career in film and TV, garnering an Oscar nomination for your role as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story. Did you relate better to Buddy Holly having been a musician for so long? In the seventh grade, I came home from school and I heard on the radio that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, went down in a plane and were killed. I remember that like it was yesterday. I remember what the radio looked like, the coffee table, the big picture window in the front of the house, and what the weather was like outside. I had no idea at that time, that I would be asked by the spirit of Charles Hardin Holley A.K.A. Buddy Holly to play him in a movie. It
was the first musical done live. I sang all of the songs in the same key he did, and I didn’t know it then, but the spirit of Charles Hardin Holley was in me. When you watch the movie again, you’ll see it. You’ll see it in all the music. I can see myself in a trance. I’m in a self-hypnotic trance; I’m not in the human zone. When I finish the last song, “True Love Ways”, I turn around and I say, “that made my heartbeat skip, ya’ll.” That wasn’t in the script but that was what Buddy Holly would say. Everything was done in one take. It was pure, relaxed, comfortable. No pressure, nothing. When they fixed me up as Buddy Holly, with the permanent black hair, 1950’s clothes, and the funny glasses, I could not find Gary Busey in the mirror. I was not there to get in my way. It was the toughest role, but the simplest and most fun and the best one. How important isreedom when you’re acting? Enlightenment is the mind that is open to anything, but attached to nothing. That is freedom. No values, no resentment, no grudges. Not carrying the past along with you. Just let all that go and you are living in enlightenment, and you are free for everything....

Suzanne Doonan is nothing short of exuberant when discussing the work she used to do as director of the historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy, most especially the careful, loving research and writing she did in order to bring to life selected stories for the annual Spring Spirit Stroll and Spirits in October tours; during these tours, groups take a guided walk through the lovely grounds as actors in era-appropriate costumes stand graveside, recounting tales from the lives of the people they’re portraying. It’s a creative and wonderful way to honor real people and local history, and the event is much-beloved by visitors and participants alike. “People used to always come to the cemetery and ask, ‘Who here is famous?’” Doonan says, “And we do have a few of those, like the boxer Young Stribling, but for the spirit tours, most of the people we presented weren’t necessarily famous. That didn’t mean they weren’t fascinating – that’s been a fun, enlightening discovery, for me and hopefully for our tour guests – every life is interesting, complicated, and contradictory in its own way.” Because of her fine work with the spirit tours, Doonan was approached several years ago by Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music faculty composer Christopher Schmitz, who wanted to compose an opera based on Macon history and found Doonan an ideal choice to write the libretto. Doonan, who was born in Boston and grew up in Birmingham, had studied science and social science at the Mississippi University for Women, going on to earn a Master’s in Counseling; in 1971, she moved to Macon with her then-husband, who’d accepted a teaching job at Mercer. She worked for years as a stay-at-home mother to her four children and, as her kids grew up and became involved in community theater, Doonan caught that bug as well, returning to college in the 90s to earn her Bachelor’s in Theatre from Mercer. Doonan held several positions that utilized multiple facets of her education, from teaching drama in schools and afterschool programs to working with the Standardized Patient Program, in which people are trained to play the roles of patients with complex medical histories so that med students can gain practice with taking case histories and 14 MARCH 31 - APRIL 14, 2017
learning communications skills, at what was then called the Medical Center (now Navicent Health). She was a perfect fit for the job at Riverside Cemetery, for which she was able to write and produce environmental theater pieces like the spirit tours; she was also responsible for fundraising, networking, and increasing public awareness about the cemetery and its attributes and amenities. (An interesting Riverside Cemetery fact gleaned from my conversation with Doonan: in 1887, when the charter for the cemetery was granted, representatives traveled to New York to commission a design from noted landscape architect Calvert Vaux, best known for his work with New York’s Central Park; around that time, the entire concept of burial grounds had been shifting from dour, grim, unadorned graveyards to a more beautiful, public park-esque space with ample flowers and statuary – “The idea of death was evolving from something foreboding and scary into the idea of a peaceful eternal rest,” says Doonan – and both Riverside Cemetery and Rose Hill were developed with that new movement in mind; for a small city like Macon to have not just one but two such spaces is rare and unusual.) But back to Schmitz asking Doonan to work with him on an opera – despite her wealth of experience and knowledge, she felt intimidated since she’d never written anything meant to be set to music; turns out that Schmitz had never written any music meant to accompany words, so the experience was new and thrilling, with a steep learning curve, for both of them. “I struggled,” Doonan laughs, “but what seemed impossible at the time turned out to be merely dif-
ficult.” After Doonan agreed to take on the project, the task of determining the opera’s subject took center stage; Doonan knew of several dark, Southern Gothic-style local stories, but Schmitz wanted to do something more uplifting, something with a heroic protagonist. While poring through archives of the 50-plus people she’d researched for the Riverside Cemetery spirit tours and bouncing ideas off a friend, the perfect subject – Hugh Smalling – appeared. Hugh Smalling was an adored young man; the youngest of nine children, he was the first to leave home and join the Navy, seeking adventure and exposure to other cultures, during World War II. While deployed, Smalling met an Australian woman, June Thomas, and fell in love – he wrote copious letters home detailing his adventures and newfound romance, but in September of 1943, the USS Nauset, the ship Smalling was traveling aboard, was sunk, and Smalling has been listed as ‘lost’ ever since. “This story is really very operatic,” Doonan says. “It has everything – romance, a shipwreck, mystery, a spiritual connection – immediately we knew it was the one.” The opera features a subplot surrounding an African-American serviceman, Benny, and his experience facing racism after returning home from war; this was inspired by esteemed Macon native Benny Scott, one of the South’s first African-American engineers, who has since passed away, but who Doonan had the pleasure of meeting during her time at Mercer in the 90s. “Scenes from Hugh Smalling,” which takes place in the Fickling Hall at Mercer University at 7:30 pm on March 28, is a glimpse into this work-in-progress. The show will be performed by 17 Mercer faculty and students, backed by a 14-person orchestra, and conducted semi-staged with minimal props and suggested costumes; the full opera has yet to be completed, and Doonan and Schmitz are looking forward to audience reaction and feedback. “Through writing this, we discovered that we have almost too much material,” Doonan says. “Benny could be the star of his own opera, and the other characters’ stories are all so fascinating – it’ll be great to hear from the audience and see what they’d like to know more about.” In the meantime, Doonan’s enjoying riding this creative wave; she’s currently focused on “creating more space in my life to do even more writing,” as she says. Her pet project of the moment is another undertaking of historical fiction, based on local lore – she’s keeping the topic close to her chest for now, but is excited to get to work on it and see if it’ll manifest itself as a play or a novel or something else entirely. And she’s full of gratitude for Mercer’s music department for allowing her the pleasure of diving into this project – “Chris was wonderful, of course, and Martha Malone is a fabulous opera director, and Richard Kosowski is an amazing choral director. Collaborating with this team has been a real joy, and I hope I get to work with them more in the future.”

What Apparel Authority Where 2081 Bethlea Avenue Hours
In February of 2010, David Barwick and David Murdock opened Apparel Authority, a custom screenprinting/embroidery business, out of the basement of Murdock’s dad’s house; the two of them had spent years working in similar industries but on a larger corporate level, and they decided to combine their talents to offer a local option for on-site printing, quick turnaround, and excellent customer service. Seven years later, they’ve come a long way from that basement. Apparel Authority has recently grown into their second storefront, and they’re proud of the skill and expertise they’re able to offer customers with every job they complete. Apparel Authority’s most popular product? Their screen-printed t-shirts. These shirts can be created to most any specification – if you have a logo already completed

and ready to go, wonderful! If you only have an idea of what you might like your shirts to look like, they can work with that, too – with a talented roster of graphic designers on staff and on call, they can match you with the artist whose work best suits your design needs. If you’re having trouble deciding on shirt colors, a visit to the store to browse through all the options in person can be helpful. And with a turnaround time of seven days after the artwork has been approved, you’ll have high-quality, high-impact shirts ready for your special occasion in no time. Uniform distribution for businesses, schools, and other employers is another of Apparel Authority’s main focuses. Their embroidery is top-notch, and the uniform options run the gamut from button-ups to polo shirts to jackets. You can also get all your marketing needs satisfied there – a massive variety of promotional items are available for personalization; from custom pens and pencils to oven mitts to water bottles, you can guarantee that your business’s name will end up in a potential consumer’s hands with one of these products. “We print everything from umbrellas to underwear,” laughs David Murdock. “You name it, we can print on it.” Although they do business with people all over the country, Apparel Authority maintains a true commitment to supporting all things local. They’re a corporate sponsor of Mercer University, where they can be found at almost every sporting event, cheering on the team and handing out swag to the fans. They pride themselves on doing tons of work for The Big House (aka The Allman Brothers Band

Museum), as well as for United in Pink, a local nonprofit created to enrich the quality of life for families affected by a breast cancer diagnosis. “We’re very proud of our community involvement,” says David Barwick. “We really love working with local folks.” And based on customer feedback, local folks love working with them as well – reviews of the business are filled with raves about the attentive customer service, professional and helpful environment, and great price points. It’s a good thing for our community that these two entrepreneurs chose to create and maintain a business close to home; hopefully, more and more middle Georgians will continue to reward that commitment by bringing all their screen-printing and embroidery needs to Apparel Authority. “Let’s talk about being prepared,” Spencer Hawkins, Director of the Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency tells me from across his desk in the underground bunker located off Poplar Street. “One of the best ways to be prepared is to always be informed. With as active and busy as all of us are these days, always being on our phone, we’re not always on Facebook or reading the Twitter feeds or watching TV, so MBCAlert was the way that the Emergency Management Agency decided to reach out and say, ‘Hey, there’s something going on that you need to know about.’ And that could be anything from a tornado warning, to an evacuation notice, to a shelter-in-place notification. Anything that you need from a life safety perspective, we can send to you via email, text messages, or calls to your home or cell.” The Emergency Management bunker was established in 1961 over the growing fear in the community over the Cold War, as a safe zone for local government figures. The purpose of the bunker and the Emergency Management Agency was to establish a center in which these government figures are able to coordinate and implement a response to potential threats and hazards to the community at large. One of the first warning measures ever set up by the EMA was the well-known sirens that blanket our community. However, sirens are not always the best way to inform the public of a potential disaster situation. “Sirens really only alert the public that something is happening, but not what is happening,” continues Hawkins, “with the app, I can actually alert you to exactly what’s going on, whether it be a tornado is coming and you need
to stay put in your home, or there’s been some sort of a hazardous chemical leak and you need to get as far away from that area as possible.” The MBCAlert app allows Macon-Bibb residents to select how they want to be notified in case of a potential disaster by selecting app alerts, text messages, and phone calls to cellular and land lines. When making a profile online, one can save multiple addresses, that way you can notify loved ones if there is anything serious going on at that location. One can sign up for this service by Google searching MBCAlert and clicking one of the first two links. You make your profile online and then download the app from your respective App Store searching for ContactBridge and entering your login information. For more information on MBCAlert or the Macon-Bibb Emergency Management Agency, one can go to their website at www.maconbibb. us/ema/ or email Spencer Hawkins directly at shawkins@maconbibb.us. Hawkins adds, “The biggest thing I want to get out about this, especially in the south with the amount of tornadoes that we get, people have always relied on the emergency sirens, the tornado sirens, for years, and that was purely because there was not a better technology. We’ve now moved passed that, because we have the better technology, it’s free for everyone to use, and I can keep you safer and more prepared with this app than I can with the tornado sirens, because when the sirens go off, everyone’s first inclination is to go look out the windows and see what’s going on; now, I can directly message you and tell you what’s going and keep you from getting harmed, which is what we care most about.”

Tell me about the Over Do Day Party. There is a legendary day party that happens in California in L.A. sponsored by Adidas called The Do-Over. I wanted to do my own Do-Over but call it the Over Do. Macon has a lot of good DJs that get overlooked. I’ll admit I may be a little more popular than a lot of people. But, skill-wise, I don’t feel elite. We’re all good at what we do. The first time we did it I had eight DJs, which probably had never happened at a party. Among the DJs we call it church, because you can do what you want. It’s going to be me, Bruce [Wonder], B-3 . . .I mean I like playing with Bruce. We have fun playing different genres of music. We’re doing a coffee tasting before the party.
How did you start DJing? I went to Fort Valley State because my mom wanted me to go to college. I was a smart kid in high school. I always liked music. Never wanted to DJ. I went to Fort Valley and I really wanted to get into parties for free. I started working for the radio station. I taught myself how to blend one weekend. I just became a DJ. It was ramen noodle money. I’ve always had a real high musical aptitude and I’m real quick on learning. I just self-taught. It was a miracle [laughs]. How did you get started with B.o.B.? I went to college for four years and dropped out. I listened to Kanye West’s first album one time and I dropped out that same day. I was like this guy makes a lot of sense. My mom was mad as hell at me. By that time I knew how to DJ and I got an internship at 97.9. I worked my way up from just doing a mix show for free, to doing the production and being a production manager, to getting the night show, to having the number one show. I didn’t ask for all of this, it just kind of kept happening. One day one of the DJs said this guy from Atlanta has some music he wants you to hear. So it was B.o.B.’s song called “Cloud 9.” It’s about smoking weed. I said this is cool, but I can’t play this on the radio. He had another song called “Haterz Everywhere.” I start playing that and I played it so much that it got traction in the city and we ended up getting him a show at Club Levels, which used to be on Cherry Street. By that time I got suspended. My boss did a report [and asked me] what’s this B.o.B. song that keeps popping up? I’m like that’s the hottest shit in the streets. He said that isn’t how radio works; you can’t just play what you want. I got suspended for a week and B.o.B.’s show did really well and they never forgot me. Two years later,”Nothin’ On You” came out, he became a superstar, and he was like I need a DJ for the Rihanna tour. What’s one of the most surprising places that you’ve been? Jakarta, Indonesia. It’s such a poor country. As we left the venue we’re on the bus and I look out the window and there are two guys in the actual dirt playing chess under a streetlight. That just kind of got to me. We take a lot of stuff for granted here. What has surprised you most about music in other cultures? What surprises me now is the Internet has made the world a lot smaller. Before B.o.B. went on in Kenya, I DJed. I played a couple of hot songs from America. I know America sets the standard for a lot of genres of music. But I was playing some really hood shit and they knew all the words. Music is powerful. Music reaches far, and these young kids are all online. Anything someone puts out they know from one corner of the earth to the other. That’s beautiful, man.

LISTEN UP TO
DJ SHAWTY SLIM
Many people may know DJ Shawty Slim as B.o.B.’s DJ, but in Macon he has become synonymous with epic afternoon dance parties and is also the production designer behind former Macon hip hop artist Floco Torres’s more recent albums, such as Porsche and Dreamboard. One of Slim’s day parties, called The Over Do Day Party, will be held April 1 at Roasted Cafe and Lounge. With many other local DJs in tow, the party promises a variety of music genres and a high-energy kickstart to The Cherry Blossom Festival Street Party. I spoke with Slim about his beginnings as a DJ, B.o.B., his new project with Torres, and the importance of emotionally connecting to music. INTERVIEW BY ANDREA MARLOWE
The other day you posted on Facebook about how the artistry of a song moved you to tears. What was that song? On Netflix there’s a documentary about Nina Simone. Early in her career, she did a song called “Little Lizza Jane” and she did at the Newport Jazz Festival. She had gotten a little notoriety. [Her guitar player] remembered her telling him, I don’t know why I’m here. He was like you’re here because you’re supposed to be here. She was a real devout artist. She was all about the work and she really let herself go. There was a clip on that video when she did that song and I had never heard that song before. She was sitting on the stool. He was behind her on the guitar. There’s a guy on bass. So as they’re playing, there’s like a weird tempo to the song. She’s singing, she’s snapping. She’s hitting the tambourine. And the dude in the documentary said if you look at her every now and then she’ll start grinning because she’s letting herself go. I went on GRANT’S YouTube and found the song and listened to it with my eyes closed. This is the kind of music I want to make. Let’s talk about you and Floco Torres and your new project. The EP’s done and we’re trying to drop it in June. Every project we put out, we want the quality and the presentation to get bigger. The first time he did Bragg Jam after Dreamboard I almost cried. I didn’t tell anybody that. I made those beats in ‘04 when I dropped out. I had dropped out of college and didn’t have a job yet and I was just making beats. I gave them to Floco and he just ran with them. I never thought sitting in my room, being broke, that I would hear a band play this and people cheering for this.

Artist Spotlight On The Creek by Jamie Saunders
VALERIE JUNE
Valerie June mixes lots of sounds to form her unique brand of Americana music. On any track of her recent release The Order of Time, released by Concord Music Group, you can hear songs that can be identified as Appalachian, bluegrass, blues, folk, gospel and a whole lot of soul. Growing up in Humboldt, Tennessee, June used to help her father, a promoter for the likes of Bobby Womack, K-Ci & Jojo and Prince, hang concert posters around town. In 2000, at the age of 19, June moved to Memphis to begin her recording career. She relocated with her husband, who she had been playing with at the time. After they split, June began recording as a solo artist, bringing many of the influences she grew up with into her music, calling her distinct sound, “organic moonshine roots music.” In 2010, June released the EP Valerie June and the Tennessee Express, collaborating with Old Crow Medicine Show. This led to record producer Kevin Augunas introducing June to Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who went on to co-write and produce her next album, 2013’s Pushin’ Against a Stone. Stone was critically acclaimed, with The New York Times praising June as America’s “most intriguing, fully formed new talents.” The New Yorker noted her “unique, stunning voice,” Rolling Stone calling her “unstoppable,” and NPR hailing June as “an elemental talent born with the
ability to rearrange the clouds themselves.” That album went on to reach #46 on the US Billboard Charts. On March 10, 2017, June release her follow up to Stone with The Order of Time. Of this album, June explains that time was a major influence for this record. “Time is the ruler of Earth’s rhythm. Our daily lives revolve around it. Our hearts beat along to its song. If we let it, it can be a powerful guide to turning our greatest hopes and dreams into realities.” To record Time, June left her new home of Brooklyn, New York and went to scenic Guildford, Vermont. “They made us feel so welcome in Vermont. I was cooking amazing food and hanging out with the band all the time. There were long talks and long walks in the snow, and friends would come up for holidays. I felt like I put myself in a place where I could really soar. With the last album, I was absorbing and learning and developing so much in the studio, but this is me taking the things I learned and the things I felt in my heart and fighting for them.” At the moment, June is currently on tour in Europe, playing the cities of Paris, London, Manchester, Hamburg and Brussels, among others. She returns to North America in early May, before embarking on a mini west coast tour with stops in Vancouver, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. If you are planning to be out west in June, make sure to look up Valerie June’s tour schedule so you can check out this dynamic talent live.
